It can develop the ability to analyze a case or event and write their opinion. Writing will help the students to improve their logical and critical thinking abilities.

What is the Definition of an Essay?

The origin of word "essay" is from the French " essayer ", which means "to try" or "to attempt". A French writer, Michel de Montaigne, was the first to define the word "essay" as an attempt to put his opinion and idea into words. Students should learn how to arrange essays when they are young. It will help them in high school and college, as they will write many of them. An essay is a piece article about the writer's opinion on a particular topic. Many people use it as a medium to tell a criticism, opinion, review, result of observation, and more. Most of the current essays are written in the form of prose. In many countries, it has an essential role in the education field. Students from elementary to university should write various articles based on the lesson or subject. Many teachers use this method because it can be implemented in any project and topic. According to Purdue University, an  essay could be a challenge to improve students' writing skills . To master essay writing skills, students should ace other capabilities, such as reading, analysis, comparison, persuasion, contrast, clarity and more.

What are the Text Structures of an Essay?

In practising writing essays, the students should understand the text structure of it. This knowledge will support the students in making organized writing. Based on the Jackson State Community College,  the essay text has three parts . Those are an introduction, body and conclusion. An introduction is the first paragraph of an essay with several particular aims. The introduction paragraph grabs the reader's attention, develops the basic idea of what is covered, and provides the essay's thesis statement. This statement usually has one sentence and consists of the essay's topic, focus and three main points. The body is the most essential part of essay writing, as it contains the "meat" of the text. The writer should be able to explain their topic in clear statements. The teachers should remind the students not to write the body too broad or too narrow. Lastly, the conclusion is the summary of what the writing is about. The author should remind the readers about the topic and ideas from the previous parts.

How Many Types of Essay are There?

Students should be able to write an essay because it will be the projects they meet during their study time. In English,  there are five types of essays , expository, argumentative, persuasive, descriptive, and narrative. An expository essay is writing with no opinion from the author. It is full of information from reliable and trusted sources. We can find this type of essay as a school task or in an exam. An argumentative essay requires a thorough study of the topic leading to the collection and evaluation of evidence. Such deepening should lead to well-founded and succinctly written positions on the subject. This type of writing usually requires extensive literature research. Controversial tasks may require empirical research through surveys, interviews, or observations. In-depth analysis can give a clear understanding of the topic and various perspectives. Unlike the expository, the writer's opinion is the essence of the persuasive essay. The aim of this writing is to persuade the readers to agree and acknowledge the authors' ideas. A descriptive essay is a medium for a writer to describe something (person, place, object), hence the name. A narrative essay is writing that tells the readers about an event from beginning to ending. It has characters, a plot and a setting of place and time.

Why is Writing Essay Beneficial for the Students?

As one of the crucial elements in formal education, the essay has many beneficial impacts on students. However, writing an essay is not an easy activity. It is complex and complicated as it requires various skills and elements. Hence, many students groaned and complained when they got this assignment. When writing an essay, the author should write a particular topic with few borders, such as points of view, analysis, stating facts, and developing opinions and ideas. Writing an essay has many positive impacts on students' education. It can develop the ability to analyze a case or event and write their opinion. Writing will help the students to improve their logical and critical thinking abilities. As the students need to make drafts and structure and organize their ideas, it can correlate their education with real-life applications.

How to Teach Writing Essays to 4th Grade Students?

As making an essay is an essential part of the academic journey, preparing young students to write them is a crucial step. In the fourth grade, the students will be ready to learn to arrange a simple essay text. The teacher should provide guidance for the students to start their academic writing journey.
