Essay On Animals

The quote by Anatole France, “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened”, sums it all about animals. Planet Earth is home to humans as well as animals. According to the survey, it is estimated that over 8 million species of animals exist on Earth, living on land and water. Each species has a unique place in the environment and balances the ecosystem. These species play a significant role in the stability of the ecosystem, environment, and our lives.

Essay On Animals

Since the beginning of human civilisation, humans have interacted with wildlife. Before the era of industrialisation and urbanisation, human life was dependent on animals. The big animals were a threat to our ancestors who once lived in caves and were nomads. Eventually, they learned to survive, fight and use the animal's skin for clothing, the meat for food or bait, and ivory elements as utensils or ornaments. Even as humans evolved, animals have contributed to various aspects like transportation, the economy, social life etc. The increased dependence of humans on animals has caused threats to their existence. Hence, their preservation and protection against any abuse is our responsibility.

Animals are the most adorable and loving creatures existing on Earth. They might not be able to speak, but they can understand. They have a unique mode of interaction which is beyond human understanding. There are two types of animals: domestic and wild animals.

Domestic Animals | Domestic animals such as dogs, cows, cats, donkeys, mules and elephants are the ones which are used for the purpose of domestication. Wild animals refer to animals that are not normally domesticated and generally live in forests. They are important for their economic, survival, beauty, and scientific value.

Wild Animals | Wild animals provide various useful substances and animal products such as honey, leather, ivory, tusk, etc. They are of cultural asset and aesthetic value to humankind. Human life largely depends on wild animals for elementary requirements like the medicines we consume and the clothes we wear daily.

Nature and wildlife are largely associated with humans for several reasons, such as emotional and social issues. The balanced functioning of the biosphere depends on endless interactions among microorganisms, plants and animals. This has led to countless efforts by humans for the conservation of animals and to protect them from extinction. Animals have occupied a special place of preservation and veneration in various cultures worldwide.

Animals are made up of numerous cells that can move, sense and reproduce. They play a vital role in maintaining nature’s balance. Numerous animal species exist in the land as well as water, and each has a purpose for their existence.

Different Types Of Animals

Biologists have divided into particular groups for better understanding at the species level, for instance – amphibians - animals which live on land as well as water, reptiles – which are scaled bodies and cold-blooded animals, mammals – animals which give birth to the offspring in the womb and have mammary glands, birds – animals with forelimbs evolved to wings and feather-covered body, and also lays eggs for giving birth, fishes – aquatic animals having fins in place of limbs, and gills for the respiration, insects – they are mostly six-legged or more, and mostly having a head, abdomen, and thorax.

How Animals Help Humans

Since the time of existence and evolution of human beings, we have established ourselves as the greater and more superior species because of sophisticated and advanced ways of thinking and applying. With time, humans have learned to use animals to their benefit and have also realised how to incorporate animals into our social lives:-

Animal husbandry has been in existence for a very long period of time.

Animals have been used for numerous purposes like clothing, food, entertainment, and transportation.

Animals have also been used to discover new things from tests and research. Several vaccines and medicines obtained from animals have turned out to be benison.

Animals have also been used for outer-space explorations, leading to milestone achievements in scientific discoveries.

Humans have used animals for good (sustain livelihood) and evil purposes (acts of torture to poor animals). Even as the world modernised, people have started thinking about animals and working for their rights, creating awareness among humans.

The bond between humans and animals has evolved as a strong bond, and now both coexist with a mutual understanding of nature. Humans have strived to preserve those endangered and rare species via modern conservation modes, including national parks, sanctuaries, etc.

My Experience With Animals

As a child raised in a city, I never had first-hand experience with animals. Though people domesticate animals, I was always afraid of them. Due to the fear of getting infected and being bitten, I never went near them. One fine day, I saw finches in the pet shop near my house. At first glance, I loved them for a long time, but then one of my friends asked me to reach out to them and observe them. To my astonishment, the finches drew near me and were looking at me. I thought to take them with me, and when I took them – I was amazed by their understanding, love and interactions. This led me to love the animals and look at them from a different perspective, not with a fearful heart. They are the most loving creatures existing on Earth.

Animals are integral to the health of our planet and contribute to the overall well-being of human societies. It is our responsibility to appreciate, respect, and conserve the rich tapestry of animal life for the benefit of present and future generations.

Scientific studies say there are 4 types of animals; mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. All these types of animals are important in maintaining the balance of our ecosystem. From the smallest insects to the largest mammals, each species has a unique role to play in the web of life.

One of the fundamental roles of animals is in ecosystem services. Bees and butterflies, for example, are crucial pollinators for many plants, including crops that humans rely on for food. Domesticated animals, such as dogs and cats, have been companions to humans for thousands of years, providing emotional support and companionship.

However, the impact of human activities on animals is a growing concern. Habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, and poaching pose significant threats to many species. Conservation efforts are crucial to safeguarding biodiversity and ensuring the survival of endangered animals.

Ethical considerations surrounding animal welfare are increasingly important, leading to discussions on responsible and humane treatment.

Animals are essential components of our planet’s ecosystems and contribute significantly to human culture and well-being. Balancing our interactions with animals through conservation, ethical treatment, and sustainable practices is imperative to ensure a harmonious coexistence and preserve the diversity of life on Earth.

Last Updated: September 15, 2021

This article was co-authored by Bess Ruff, MA . Bess Ruff is a Geography PhD student at Florida State University. Expository essays describe a particular topic and provide the reader with relevant information. An expository essay about an animal can take a variety of different directions. Choose a topic that interests you, outline and write your essay, and then proofread your work before turning it in.

Outlining and Researching

Step 1 Think of a topic.

  • An expository essay is an essay that provides the reader information about a particular topic. To write an expository essay on an animal, you'll have to choose an animal and provide a variety of information on that animal. It would likely include things like what that animal looks like, what it eats, where it lives, and so on.
  • Choose an animal that personally interests you. You'll have more fun writing your essay if you are writing about something you enjoy. Pick an animal you like. Your favorite animal could be a good topic for an expository essay on an animal.

Step 2 Understand what format your essay should follow.

  • You can review the assignment sheet given to you or ask your teacher in person. If you speak with your teacher, be sure to take notes so you can refer back to them when researching, outlining, writing, and polishing your essay.

Step 3 Research.

  • Look for sources that are valid. Major newspapers like the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle are a good place to start. You also might want to find some history behind your topic. Go your school's library and ask a librarian to help you use the card catalogue to locate books and magazines on your topic. An encyclopedia could be a good reference for an expository essay. [1] X Research source
  • The Internet is a major source of information and can be extremely helpful when researching. However, you should know how to evaluate sources before relying on the internet for information. Look for current resources so you know the information is up-to-date. Go for websites associated with universities or government organizations, with domains like .edu and .gov, over business or commercial websites.
  • Select pages where the author's name is clearly visible and the page is easy to navigate. Personal blogs are not a good resource. Websites for organizations advocating strongly for a particular political cause may have a strong bias. Avoid sites like Wikipedia, as they are user generated and may not have accurate information.
  • Take notes while researching. Keep a notebook with you and jot down relevant information. Write down which source you got this information from so you can refer to the source later on. If possible, print out your own copies of library texts so you can underline and write notes in the margins.

Step 4 Outline...

  • Outlines are usually formed using a series of numbers and letter. You write down main points as headings and then expand upon these points in subheadings.
  • For example, you can use Roman numerals as headings and then use letters as subheadings. Say you're writing about potbelly pigs. You can start with “I. Introduction.” Then something like “a. Introduce my topic, including a brief description of potbelly pigs” and “b. briefly state the personality traits and appearance of a potbelly pig.”
  • You don't need to use full sentences in an outline. It's just a tool to help you organize your ideas. Don't worry about forming full sentences or thoughts yet. You can get to that during the writing process.

Writing the Essay

Step 1 Begin with an introduction.

  • Begin your introduction with a fun opening sentence that gets the reader's attention. You can open with a question, a quote, a joke, or anything that introduces your topic in a creative manner. For example, let's return to the potbelly pig example. Open with something like, "Did you know that not all pigs are farmyard animals? Some pigs are kept domestically as pets." This invites the reader to think about your topic.
  • From there, briefly state what you'll be discussing in your paper. You can provide a brief description of a potbelly pig, including things like a brief overview of their appearance and personality traits.

Step 2 Write paragraphs focusing on specific topics.

  • For example, one paragraph can describe the appearance of a potbelly pig. Another paragraph can then describe the eating habits of a potbelly pig, and another can talk about how to care for potbelly pigs, health problems they're prone to, and so on.
  • Make sure you stick to one main topic per paragraph.

Step 3 Back up your information with research.

  • Go to your sources for support of the information you're listing. If you're talking about how potbelly pigs are prone to bacterial infections in the ear, you'll need a source that shows that this is true.

Step 4 Write a conclusion.

  • Certain questions can help guide a good conclusion. Did you think of any new ideas about the animal you're researching? Are there any questions or concerns that need further research? What larger significance does your topic have in the bigger world?
  • However, you should not suddenly introduce new information in the conclusion. Instead, you should speculate and reflect on the information provided. Think of a good closing line that will stay in readers' minds. You want to make sure your essay has an impact. [2] X Research source

Reviewing Your Work

Step 1 Revise your first draft.

  • A good way to structure transitions is to make them a bridge between the old paragraph and the new. For example, to connect a paragraph on keeping a potbelly pig as a pet to a previous paragraph about eating habits, you could use something like this: "Although potbelly pigs can eat a variety of things in the wild, if you're keeping a potbelly pig as a pet, you need to be more careful about providing a balanced diet." The word Although sets up a connection between the ideas.
  • Focus on clarity. You want to make sure the information is presented in as straightforward means as possible. If you notice any sentences that seem unclear in your first draft, work on rewording them in revision.

Step 2 Proofread

Community Q&A

  • Pick an animal you would like to know about. This can help you have fun researching and writing. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0

They live with us, and therefore we see them face to face daily as part of our companions. They sometimes portray quietness when they are alone; happiness, when playing, can also become one’s best friend.

The most interesting part of the companionship is where a dog welcomes or greets the owner at the door. Some animals are used in rehabilitation: This is especially for pet animals such as dogs. A person intending to use them for this purpose must first seek authorization or certification from the relevant authority. They are mostly used when carrying out rehabilitation at the social level.

Thus, the dog is permitted to visit people living in nursing homes or equivalents. In such a setting, they help restore what might have been lost. Animals can be used to teach child caretaking skills. When one has a pet, it must be fed and watered at different times of the day. The pet may also require bathing and training at some other times. These duties can be delegated to a child occasionally, thus helping create in the child a sense of compassion to the pet.

As a result, the child develops a habit of being responsible. The child, therefore, learns to be responsible through the learning aid, which is the pet. They are useful in supporting human beings at work. Some are used to plow by pulling plows. Others are used in transportation where they pool wagons. The best examples under this category are the horses and the oxen.

Today, horses are also used in winning awards by riding on them. Animals also serve the purpose of enabling individuals to earn a living especially farmers. Farmers do keep such animals as cows, goats, sheep, cattle and other animals to enable them to earn a living. When such animals are sold, the farmer obtains revenue, which he uses to acquire other essential goods and services required to earn a living.

This is helpful in increasing the standards of living of the farmers. The other significance of animals to human beings is that they are a source of food. Most animals that human beings keep are meant for food. For example milk, eggs, meat, and other food items. Everyone consumes either animals or animal related products. The food products are consumed directly or sold for money.

As a result, they contribute to a country’s gross domestic product. This means improved living standards. In some other cases, these products are also exported to other countries thus earning foreign exchange. Also, animals are also important in leisure and sports activities. For example, dogs can be used to hunt other animals required as human food while some other animals are used as trackers.

In sporting, horses are used for horseback riding and polo, which are forms of sports. Research and inventions: animals are known to be used by scientists to test their experiments. When scientists discover a new thing that is to be used by human beings, the first experiment with its effects on animals. If it adversely affects the animals, then it implies that it will also affect human beings in the same way.

Where no effect is manifested, then they would proceed to experiment it on human beings. Hence animals contribute to research and development of human beings (Ross 127). Animals serve to attract tourists into the country. Many people come from their countries to other countries to come and see certain animals. When such tourists visit the country, they increase the country’s income.

It is a major source of revenue to the country thus enabling the country to provide goods and services to its citizens. They are a good source of security to human beings. Some animals protect man from invasion by other animals and even by human beings (Weil 4). For example, dogs are used to protect their homes at night. Also, police officers also use dogs during wars as well as in the maintenance of law and order.

When going for their duties, police officers go with police dogs for protection. Clothing: Animal products are used to make clothes. Most of the clothes human beings wear are mostly made from products of animals. For example, skins for making shoes while wool is used to make clothes (Weil 122). These clothes and shoes protect human beings from adverse weather conditions.

Finally, some animal products such as hooves and horns can be used as containers for making traditional drinking vessels. On the other hand, animal bones can be used to make such things as ornaments, weapons, and needles. The horses were also used to produce insulin before the discovery of artificial insulin. In conclusion, animals play important roles in the lives of people.

It is upon people and society to ensure that animals, as well as their products, are handled properly. This is because they provide people with food, companionship, security, income, foreign exchange, and other benefits that have been discussed above. Thus, it is evident that animals matter to human beings. As a result, human beings need animals for their survival.

We are not the only animals on our planet, but many other species live there as well. A variety of animals have inhabited this plant since the beginning of time. These animals served as both friends and foes to humans. Transport, protection, and hunting were all carried out with the help of animals.

Different species inhabit the area, including amphibians, reptiles, mammals, insects, and birds. Animals play an essential role in maintaining our ecosystem. The actions of humans, however, threaten to exterminate many of these animals. Conservation of many species has been raised by environmentalists and international organizations like PETA and WWF.

An essay of 200 words about animals

Many animals live on Earth. A man’s companion, they are there for him at all times. There are many types of animals. In order to absorb and breathe, amphibians have thin skin. An example would be a frog or a toad. Warm-blooded mammals, such as lions, tigers, and bears, have fur and a coat of fur. Eggs are laid by reptiles, and they have cold blood. Snakes and crocodiles, for instance, are reptiles. The animal kingdom includes insects and birds.

Our environment benefits from animals. Besides providing nourishment for the soil, they also provide food. Animal populations are controlled by predators such as lions and tigers. As well as being useful in agriculture, they are also useful in other fields. There is, however, a threat of extinction facing animals.

As humans build homes and factories, many forests are destroyed, causing animals to lose their homes. Leather, fur, and ivory are stolen from animals by hunters. The well-being of animals is negatively affected when they are caged and kept away from their habitats. It is harmful to animals that live in water bodies that are polluted by harmful substances.

Animals are part of the Earth, and they should be protected because it belongs to them as well. Humans depend on them for companionship. In order to spread the message of preserving our wildlife, we celebrate World Wildlife Day every year on the 3rd of March.

They breathe through their thin skin and require a moist environment. Frogs, salamanders, toads, and caecilians are examples of amphibians.

Warm-blooded vertebrates are mammals. In addition to mammary glands, females have a coat of fur that they use to feed their young. A mammal can be a carnivore, a bear, a rodent, etc.

Crocodiles and snakes are reptiles, which are vertebrates but have a cold blood system and lay eggs. Different species of animals include insects and birds.

Ecological balance is maintained by animals. Feeding on plants helps control growth and keep populations under control. In addition to poultry and dairy products, meat is also produced by animals.

Several animals have lost their habitat due to the cutting down of forests. Leather is extracted from alligators, fur from lions and bears, ivory from elephants, and ivory tusks from elephants are harvested.

It is detrimental to the well-being of animals to confine them and keep them away from their habitat. Marine life is negatively affected by polluted water bodies.

Organizations like PETA and WWF promote animal conservation and spread awareness. Project Tiger and Project Elephant are two wildlife protection projects undertaken by the Indian government.

On the third Saturday of March every year, World Wildlife Day is observed. To achieve sustainable development goals, the United Nations has chosen to promote sustainable development through the 2020 theme, “Sustaining all life on Earth”.

Philosophy professor’s book asks humans to rethink their relationships with animals

In her new book, “Fellow Creatures: Our Obligations to the Other Animals,” Arthur Kingsley Porter Professor of Philosophy Christine Korsgaard makes the case that humans are not inherently more important than animals and therefore should treat them much better than we do.

Korsgaard, Ph.D. ’81, has taught at Harvard for almost 30 years and is an expert on moral philosophy. The book is a departure from her previous theoretical work on moral philosophy, as it deals with more practical ethical questions.

Drawing on the work of Immanuel Kant and Aristotle, she argues that humans have a duty to value our fellow creatures not as tools, but as sentient beings capable of consciousness and able to have lives that are good or bad for them.

The Gazette spoke to Korsgaard about her book, the future of animal rights, and writing accessible philosophy.

Christine Korsgaard

GAZETTE:   What made you decide to pursue this topic?

KORSGAARD:   Western moral philosophy is now more than 2,000 years old, and in all of that time very few moral philosophers have said anything about the treatment of animals. Animals are sentient beings and some are capable of interacting with us, but on the other hand there they are, on our dinner plates, pulling our wagons, hunted by us, and made to fight with one another for our amusement. It just seems like an obvious moral issue, and yet moral philosophers haven’t often asked questions like: Is this all right? Why is it OK to do these things?

"Fellow Creatures" book cover.

I’ve had a personal belief for a long time that we should be treating other animals better and in particular that we shouldn’t eat them. I’ve been a vegetarian for more than 40 years and a vegan more recently. At the same time, I’m an advocate of the moral philosophy of Immanuel Kant, who celebrates the value of humanity and rational nature and is one of the few philosophers to have said right out, “We have no duties to the other animals and we can use them however we please.” So I was trying to understand how to put these different positions together.

GAZETTE:   This is a personal subject for you, so was your approach to writing this different from your previous work?

KORSGAARD:   Writing about practical questions is really difficult. People talk as if the way you solve a practical problem is that you take a theory and then just apply it to a case, but it’s not like that. It takes a lot of work to put the whole battery of ideas involved in a theory to work on a practical question. In that sense, the book represents a kind of work I haven’t done before, at least not to this extent.

GAZETTE:   Were there issues that were particularly challenging for you to write about?

KORSGAARD:   One difficult thing was to articulate a position in the face of knowing that there’s a passionate but often inadequately argued objection out there to what I’m saying. If I say, “We shouldn’t experiment on animals, because we have no right to use them as mere means to our ends,” that will be met with a heated defense of the practice. People say, “We should never give that up, because it does so much good to humans.” To me that doesn’t seem to meet the point, so I am at cross-purposes with my opponents.

Another difficult thing about this book was to get the audience properly in focus. I wanted to make a book that nonphilosophers could understand and think about, at least if they are willing to bear down a little on the arguments, but I also wanted to convince my colleagues in philosophy that there’s a serious philosophical topic here.

“Some people think that humans are just plain more important than other animals. I ask: More important to whom?”

GAZETTE:   “Tethered importance” or “tethered goodness” is an integral element of your book. Can you explain more about that?

KORSGAARD:   The idea of good or importance being “tethered” is based on the idea that anything that is good is good for someone; anything that is important is important to  someone. Kant’s idea is that when we pursue things that are good for us, we in effect make a claim that those things are good in an absolute sense — we have reason to pursue them and other people have a reason to treat them as good as well, to respect our choices or pursue our ends. But if we think that way, we have to say that things that are good or bad for any creature for whom things are good or bad, including animals, are good or bad in an absolute sense.

Some people think that humans are just plain more important than other animals. I ask: More important to whom? We may be more important to ourselves, but that doesn’t justify our treating animals as if they’re less important to us, any more than the fact that your family is more important to you justifies you treating other people’s families as if they are less important than yours.

GAZETTE :  With the growing popularity of “impossible” plant-based meat and meat grown from animal cells, do you think more people are coming to a moral realization about how to treat animals?

More like this

Houses and city skyscrapers on back of whale.

Raising the profile of animal law to match the stakes

Scientist Irene Pepperberg with African grey parrot, Griffin.

Brainy birds

KORSGAARD :   I’m not very optimistic about people coming to care more about animals and what’s good or bad for them. But the issue of how we treat animals overlaps with two issues that people care a lot about, even if it’s only for the sake of human beings: climate change and biodiversity. Factory farming is one of the major causes of global warming, and biodiversity is something people are concerned about too, even if [just] for the sake of having a healthy environment for human beings.

If we got rid of factory farming, that would help animals. Biodiversity is related to that too because one of the main reasons why so many species are dying out is because of lack of habitat caused by factory farming in general and the production of meat. Many people care about the preservation of species, but that’s not the same as treating individual animals in an ethically correct way. But thinking about these issues has brought attention to the ways that we treat animals, and so there’s some room for hope that people will think more about these things.

This interview has been condensed and edited for length and clarity.

Essay on Animals: How to Write a Persuasive Paper

  • Fighting Puppy Mills
  • Puppy Mills

This girl (with help from her two black cats) is writing an essay on animals for school.

When writing a persuasive paper, your purpose is to convince your audience to agree with your idea or accept your recommendation for a course of action.

If you’ve decided to write an essay on animals (either for a school assignment or for another purpose), here are the steps to follow:

  • Everyone should spay or neuter their pets.
  • Adoption is the best option.
  • Dogs should be treated as individuals, not discriminated against because of breed.
  • Microchipping is important in keeping pets with their families.
  • Find and review information. You can do research in the library and on the Internet to get more information. While reviewing the materials, look for interesting facts or tidbits that will hook your readers.
  • Write a sentence that states the reason for your paper. For example: Everyone should spay or neuter their pets. This statement will go in the first box in your flow chart. The flow chart is a visual way to help you create an outline. An outline will help you organize the information in a logical order. Your finished product will have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.
  • The body will contain the three reasons and the supporting data listed on your flow chart. The body not only contains evidence to support your opinion, but also addresses one or two opposing views. Be sure to include your counter-argument when stating the opposing view. For example, one opposing view to the above statement might be this: Many people think that an animal who has been spayed or neutered will become lazy and fat. Your counter-argument could be this: This is a misconception. The main reason pets become fat is lack of exercise and overfeeding.
  • Keep the flow chart handy as you read through all the information you have gathered. On a sheet of paper, write “Hooks and facts to grab the reader’s attention” and as you review your material, jot down cool facts that you come across. For example: Just one female cat and her offspring can produce an estimated 420,000 cats in only seven years.
  • Be sure to address a wide variety of reasons to support your topic statement. For example: Think about pet overpopulation, overcrowded shelters, the costs to your city or town, the effects on pet health and pet behavior. What would your audience find most important?
  • Before writing your actual paper, keep your facts straight by writing each reason and the supporting evidence on separate sheets of paper.
  • Write your first draft.
  • Revise your outline and draft.
  • Write or type your final paper.
  • Keep in mind that your teacher may require a bibliography.

Writing an IELTS essay on animals should not be taken lightly. Ensure that you state your objectives clearly in the essay and follow a proper structure that the examiner can understand. Write your essay within the stipulated timeline of 40 minutes while sticking to the minimum word count of 250 words. There is no maximum limit to the word count.

Many advocate the need to protect all wild animals, while others think that it is important to protect some, not all of them. Discuss both views and give your opinion .

Essay 1-

Some people have recommended selective and analytical protection or safeguarding of wild animals. In my personal opinion, the world and humanity hold responsibility for all kinds of wild animals. However, it may periodically have justifications for allocating more resources towards conserving species of a more valuable nature.

Those advocating the protection of specific wild animal species talk about various specific aspects, including the threats faced by these particular species and their overall value from an environmental perspective. For example, tigers are endangered animals and require resource-intensive efforts for conservation compared to commoner animals without the threat of extinction, such as pigeons or even rats, for instance, that have already adapted the skills of thriving in urban semi-urban environments.

Many people will agree that there is a lack of proper logic in offering equal protection and support for species in varying habitats and circumstances. Extreme critics of such policies may also add that some animals deserve better preservation than many others. The tiger, for example, is valued for its biodiversity contributions, its overall nature, and aesthetic factors. Other species like honey bees, for instance, have medicinally and commercially valuable offerings for mankind and the world at large while they are not as valued for aesthetics.

However, I still opine that protection should be similar for all wild animals since humankind has played the biggest role in endangering them. Before the growing population and industrialization over the last few hundred years, animals and humans resided on Earth as equals while sharing its bounties and natural resources more judiciously and equally. For a long time, human beings have kept developing, outstripping natural development. They have now started becoming threats to the natural growth and habitats of innumerable species of wild animals. Humans must implement proper safeguards for all species of wild animals. The absence of protective measures will lead to the entire biodiversity chain collapsing globally, with more ecosystems shrinking and animals dying out and going extinct. Even if a wild animal is not about to go extinct, it will always be crucial for maintaining the population levels of the species to combat any future cycle of irreversible damage.

To conclude, human beings should take protective measures for all wild animals and as many wild animals as possible. However, there are some exceptional scenarios where priority could be given to a few species based on circumstantial factors and reasons. Society and global governments should participate and collaborate in measures and regulations to ensure that wild animals are not casualties of human growth and development. (447 words)

Question- Several people believe that animals should have equal rights as humans and shouldn't be exploited by people. In contrast, others think that humans must use animals to satisfy their needs, including uses for food and research.

Talk about both sides and give your opinion .

Essay 2-

Human beings have always used animals in various forms to fulfill diverse requirements. Yet, while some individuals think that animals should have similar treatment in human beings with equal rights, others feel that it is vital to use animals for medical research, food, and other uses.

Talking about animals being exploited, many feel it is rather acceptable for different reasons. They feel that human beings are the most vital on the Earth and the entire food chain, with every possible measure being taken for ensuring their continued survival, growth, and progress. If this equates to animal experimentation for curing and combating diseases, then that would be a bigger priority than the suffering of animals. At the same time, these people also believe that animals do not have feelings of loss or pain in the manner of human beings, and hence if they are killed for use as food, then it could be morally and ethically all right.

Yet, I do not feel that these arguments have much meat. Several secret films in laboratories have already shown that courtesy of groups for animal rights and other evidence, animals feel pain akin to human beings and suffer when caged for longer durations. Alongside, a major amount of research on animals is already done for medicinal and cosmetic uses. It is not all for finding remedies to ailments, and hence the cosmetics and beauty industry exploits animals greatly for its profits. This is not fully necessary, in my opinion. It has also been seen that human beings can receive all necessary vitamins and nutrients from plants. Hence, killing animals for food purposes is not a suitable argument.

In conclusion, though some people state that animals can be killed or exploited for food and research purposes, I will ethically argue that there is evidence to show that this is not the right path. Steps should be taken to enhance the safety and rights of animals instead. (347 words)

Essay on My Favorite Animal in English

The animal around us is a fundamental component of our existence, and each creature possesses exceptional traits and attributes that distinguish it from the rest. When considering the subject matter of our preferred animals, the possibilities are endless.

While some individuals may cherish ferocious felines, others may find themselves drawn to scaly reptiles. In the following piece, we will delve into one of the most cherished topics of the animal realm, crafting an essay surrounding my favored creature in the English language.

The process of writing about one’s favorite animal is not only exciting but also provides an excellent opportunity to improve one’s writing skills. During this process, one can convey their passion for their chosen animal while learning essential writing techniques such as descriptive writing, essay structure and coherence. With its vast variety of expressions and vocabulary, the English language allows us a wealth of opportunity to share our admiration for our favorite animal.

The majestic elephant stands as my preferred animal. These remarkable creatures are among the largest and most intriguing beings on the planet, characterized by their high intelligence and sociability, as well as their exceptional memory and communication abilities.

Elephants exist in an array of habitats, ranging from tropical and subtropical forests to savannas and grasslands. As herbivores, they require vast amounts of vegetation – up to 300 pounds per day – to sustain their massive bodies.

As a child, I had the privilege of observing these magnificent creatures up close at a wildlife sanctuary. The sheer size and graceful yet powerful movements of the elephants left me in awe. Since then, my fascination for these beings has continued to grow stronger.

The extraordinary nature of elephants is exemplified through their profound familial connections. These magnificent creatures form herds under the guidance of a female leader, or matriarch, and demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the well-being and defense of one another. Their capacity for empathy is remarkable, as evidenced by their mourning of fallen members within the herd.

My admiration for elephants is rooted in their remarkable intellect, grandeur, and exceptional familial bonds. These creatures are truly awe-inspiring, and I am constantly struck by their majestic presence.

The dolphin is my preferred animal. Renowned for their intelligence and amiable nature, dolphins are captivating creatures that leave a lasting impression on anyone who has the pleasure of seeing them in person, or even on screen. As a marine mammal, they are recognized for their streamlined physique, elongated beaks, and dorsal fin, which can reach a height of two meters. However, their appeal goes beyond their physical attributes, as their intelligence is unparalleled. Dolphins are known to communicate among themselves using a complex system of clicks and whistles and have been trained to execute specific tasks, such as assisting the military with underwater missions. These characteristics position dolphins as one of the most respected and admired animals worldwide.

As an individual with a deep appreciation for the animal kingdom, selecting a favorite animal can be a challenging endeavor. However, after due contemplation, my foremost admiration is for the elephant. This magnificent creature is renowned for its remarkable traits such as intelligence, poise and vigor. In this discourse, I aim to elucidate the reasons why the elephant is my favorite animal and why it is cherished across the globe.

Primarily, the elephant is a highly intelligent being. Its cognitive abilities are evident in various behaviors, including self-awareness, tool usage, and grieving for their departed. These social creatures reside in family units and have strong emotional connections with their kin. Observing elephants interacting with each other.

Moreover, elephants have a unique grace and beauty in the way they move. Despite their large size, elephants move with an effortless grace that seems almost balletic. Watching elephants walk through the savannah, trunk swinging and ears flapping, is truly a sight to behold.

Introduction:

Throughout history, humans have relied on animals for various purposes, and their diversity is remarkable. Among the vast array of creatures inhabiting our planet, elephants stand out to me as particularly captivating and fascinating.

Behold the awe-inspiring elephants – the gentle giants of the wild. These magnificent creatures are truly one-of-a-kind with their striking features – those big, flapping ears, the lengthy trunks, and the impressive tusks that serve as their tools for communication, nourishment, and self-defense.

But there’s more to these pachyderms than just their physical attributes. They’re also remarkably intelligent and social creatures, forming close-knit bonds and unbreakable ties with their kin and other herd members. Truly, elephants are a marvel to behold in every way possible.

Oh, elephants! They are such fascinating creatures! What blows my mind is their remarkable ability to remember things for a really long time. Yes, you read that right.

Elephants have an unbeatable long-term memory that can recall specific individuals, places, and things they have encountered for years, making them great navigators and water finders in conservation efforts. Their memory is so legendary that it’s not surprising that they are considered the geniuses of the animal kingdom.

Apart from their intelligence, elephants are also one of the few animals that show empathy and emotional intelligence. They have been observed mourning the death of other elephants and showing affection towards their young ones. This shows that elephants are capable of experiencing

Oh, the pain of selecting a favorite animal! But, if I absolutely had to choose, my heart would flutter for the magnificent elephant. These gentle giants are renowned for their intelligence, strength, and gracefulness. Their family structure is nothing short of remarkable, with close-knit bonds between members and complex social interactions.

Beyond their physical prowess – from their long trunks to their massive size – elephants perform an indispensable role in their native habitats and ecosystems. As herbivores, they regulate the delicate balance of flora and fauna. It’s hard not to be in awe of these awe-inspiring creatures, and I am grateful for the privilege of sharing this planet with them.

Animals are an integral part of our environment and bring immense joy and companionship to our lives. From domestic animals like dogs and cats to exotic mammals like lions and tigers, every animal has its unique charm. However, my favorite animal is the dolphin.

The dolphin is a highly intelligent and social animal that is known for its playful nature and incredible abilities. These amazing creatures can communicate with each other using a complex system of sounds and body language, and are capable of problem-solving and learning new skills. Dolphins are also incredibly acrobatic and can jump up to six meters in the air.

In addition, dolphins hold a special significance in many cultures and are revered for their healing and spiritual properties. They are often seen as symbols of peace, joy, and wisdom.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the dolphin is an amazing animal that has fascinated humans for centuries. Their intelligence, playfulness, and beauty make them a joy to watch and learn about. If I could, I would love to spend a day swimming with these incredible creatures, watching them perform their acrobatic tricks and enjoying their company.

Oh, how I adore my favorite animal! Writing an essay about it is a chance for me to gush about its amazing features and quirks. Whether it’s the animal’s physical appearance or its unique behavior, I can’t help but be drawn to it. I dive deep into research to uncover all the fascinating details about my favorite creature and present them in an organized and well-crafted essay. It’s a joy to express my personal thoughts and opinions about this animal and share my enthusiasm for it with others. I ensure that my essay is free of any errors and showcases my passion for this incredible creature. Overall, writing about my favorite animal allows me to showcase my writing skills while celebrating the wonder and beauty of nature.

The beauty and wonder of animals are often a source of fascination for many people. As an animal lover, I have had the great privilege of learning about and getting to know many different creatures over the years. However, there is one animal that stands out above the rest as my personal favorite – the dolphin.

These intelligent, playful creatures have captured my heart with their acrobatics and effortless grace in the water. As a result, I have chosen to write an essay on my favorite animal example 8 in English to share my admiration and excitement for the dolphin with others. In this essay, I will delve into the fascinating world of dolphins and explore what makes them so special and unique.

Prepare to be amazed by the wonder and magnificence of the animal kingdom, where creatures of all shapes and sizes thrive in their natural habitats. Among these awe-inspiring beings, my ultimate favorite is none other than the regal and magnificent elephant. This gentle giant reigns supreme as the largest land animal, exuding an unparalleled elegance and charm that captivates all who witness its majesty.

My adoration for these magnificent beasts began at a young age, when I first encountered them up close and personal at a local zoo. Since then, I have been utterly captivated by their grace and intelligence. Elephants are not only massive in size, but they possess a profound level of intellect and a wide range of emotions.

Oh, how I love nature’s creations, especially the furry four-legged kind, dogs, to be precise. They are the epitome of loyalty and devotion, and that’s why they have earned the title of “man’s best friend”. In this captivating essay, I will delve into the reasons why dogs are my all-time favorite animal and how they have left an indelible mark on my heart. Get ready to be enchanted by the magical world of dogs!

Dogs are undoubtedly one of the most affectionate and endearing creatures to grace our lives. With their boundless love and loyal companionship, they have a way of melting our hearts like butter on a hot summer’s day. Unlike other animals, dogs have a special knack for showing their love in a way that’s uniquely their own.

Not only are they playful and exuberant, but they also possess an uncanny ability to sense our moods and offer solace and reassurance when needed. As pets, dogs are truly a blessing, offering endless fun and laughter as well as emotional support and unconditional love.

Apart from their loving nature, dogs are also very intelligent and can be trained to perform various tasks, such as guiding blind people, detecting bombs and drugs, and even providing emotional support to those with mental health issues. They also come in various breeds, each with their unique personality, behavior, and physical traits.

Having a dog as a pet has impacted my life in various ways. They have taught me the importance of responsibility, patience, and unconditional love. Taking care of them and

In conclusion, my love for my favorite animal goes beyond aesthetics; it’s because of the animal’s unique behaviors, intelligence, and adaptability. At times, it’s hard to comprehend how different creatures like these can coexist with humans. Writing this essay made me appreciate the importance of being environmentally conscious to preserve these fascinating animals’ habitats. As much as humans have always considered themselves superior to the animals, I believe we can learn a lot from the animals’ behavior and way of life. 20 Copywriter Bio Examples | Creative Bio Examples

250 Words Essay on Love for Animals

The profound connection: humans and animals.

The relationship between humans and animals is a rich tapestry of interdependence and mutual respect. Love for animals is not merely an emotional response; it is a deep-seated part of our evolutionary history and psychological makeup.

The Evolutionary Perspective

From an evolutionary standpoint, humans have always been closely tied to animals. Early humans relied on animals for food, clothing, and tools, fostering a sense of respect and appreciation. Domestication further deepened this bond, with animals becoming integral to human survival and society.

Psychological Benefits of Animal Love

Love for animals also has significant psychological implications. Interactions with animals have been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and even enhance social interactions. Pets, in particular, can provide a sense of companionship and unconditional love that is deeply comforting.

Animal Love and Environmental Stewardship

Furthermore, love for animals often translates into broader environmental stewardship. Those who feel a deep connection to animals are more likely to engage in conservation efforts, promoting biodiversity and the health of our planet.

In conclusion, love for animals is a multifaceted phenomenon that transcends simple emotional attachment. It is rooted in our evolutionary history, contributes to our psychological well-being, and promotes environmental stewardship. As we move forward in an increasingly interconnected world, fostering this love for animals is more important than ever.

500 Words Essay on Love for Animals

Introduction: defining love for animals.

Love for animals, or anthrozoology, is a profound emotional connection that humans form with non-human species. This bond, which transcends the confines of survival instincts, is an intricate blend of empathy, compassion, and mutual respect. It is a testament to the human capacity for understanding and coexisting with different forms of life.

From an evolutionary standpoint, this affection for animals has been instrumental in human survival. Early humans domesticated animals for various necessities like food, protection, and transportation. However, as societies evolved, animals began to serve more than just utilitarian purposes. They became companions, symbols of societal status, and even spiritual entities.

Animals as Emotional Companions

In the modern world, animals, particularly pets, play a significant role in the emotional well-being of humans. They provide unconditional love, companionship, and emotional support. Studies have shown that interactions with pets can lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and even increase longevity. This therapeutic effect is the cornerstone of practices like animal-assisted therapy, which leverages the human-animal bond to aid in mental health treatments.

Conservation and Ethical Implications

Love for animals also has profound implications for conservation. It motivates people to protect endangered species and their habitats. This emotional connection can be a powerful tool in raising awareness about biodiversity loss and driving conservation efforts. However, it also raises ethical questions. How do we balance our love for animals with our need for resources? Is it ethical to keep animals in zoos or as pets, given their inherent wild nature? These questions challenge us to critically evaluate our relationship with animals and strive for a more balanced coexistence.

Animals in Literature and Culture

Animals have a significant presence in literature, art, and culture, often symbolizing human traits or societal issues. They serve as powerful metaphors and allegories, helping us explore complex human emotions and experiences. This cultural representation of animals reflects our deep emotional connection with them and underscores their importance in our collective consciousness.

Conclusion: The Future of Human-Animal Relations

In conclusion, love for animals is a complex, multifaceted emotion that has shaped human evolution, society, and culture. As we move towards a future marked by environmental challenges, this bond will play a crucial role in fostering empathy for all life forms and driving conservation efforts. However, it also necessitates a critical reassessment of our ethical responsibilities towards animals. Ultimately, our love for animals challenges us to redefine our place in the natural world, not as dominators, but as respectful co-inhabitants.

Animal Testing Essay

Posted by David S. Wills | Oct 21, 2022 | Model Essays | 0

Animal Testing Essay

There is a wide range of topics used in the IELTS writing test and many of them overlap. Today, we are going to look at a question that falls between the topics of animals and ethics and science. It will require you to write an animal testing essay .

In this article, I will analyse the question for you, give you some pointers on useful language, and then show you my own sample band 9 answer.

The Task: Animal Testing

Here is a question that appeared in the IELTS exam several years ago:

Some people claim that it is acceptable to use animals in medical research for the benefit of human beings, while other people argue that it is wrong. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

(Note that questions can be re-used or re-written, so it is possible that you might see this recycled in the future.)

This is a “discuss both views” question , so your task is ultimately to do three things:

  • Explain why some people think animal testing is acceptable
  • Explain why some people think animal testing is unacceptable
  • Give your opinion

Even if you feel really strongly that it is wrong, for example, you still need to explain the opposing view. You don’t need to give a balanced answer , but you do need to acknowledge both sides of the debate. This is important for Task Response.

Planning your Answer

I almost always write a four-paragraph essay for my sample band 9 answers but today I’m going to write five. It could easily have been four paragraphs but I wanted to separate my anti-animal testing arguments into two separate paragraphs for better organisation. (You can read about 4- vs 5-paragraph essay structures here .)

My essay is going to look like this:

When it comes to a task 2 introduction , please make sure that you have a clear outline sentence and also that your opinion (if one is required) is stated clearly.

Body paragraph 1 will act as a sort of concession paragraph , so it will be imperative that I make it clear that this is not my opinion but rather what some other people think. If I fail to do this, then the reader might be confused.

The ideas in body paragraphs 2 and 3 will be separated but could also have been condensed into two paragraphs. However, I felt that for this topic it was a little more effective to split them. It also made my argument slightly more persuasive.

For the conclusion , I will be careful not to repeat myself too much and instead just summarise and reaffirm my stance.

Language for an Animal Testing Essay

The topic of animal testing is obviously controversial and so people will have different ideas. What you say will be largely based upon your own opinions. However, keep in mind that it covers those three topics I mentioned:

You don’t really need to know a lot about each, but it definitely would have some benefit if you knew a little about these areas and had some good vocabulary to use. I wrote about the IELTS topic of animals here , and there is plenty of good vocabulary that you can borrow. You can also search “animals” in the search bar at the top of the page.

I also recommend that you read and listen on issues that are related to IELTS topics like this. I particularly recommend the SYSK podcast episode on animal testing, which I think it is informative and accessible. You may learn some good language and get some inspiration for what you could write in your own animal testing essay. Other sources include this argument against animal testing by PETA and this one in favour of it by Stanford.

Language for Contentious Issues

In my essay, I will use the following phrases, which could be modified and applied to other contentious issues. I will put the specific language in brackets, so that you could swap it out when discussing other topics:

  • [animal testing] has been fiercely debated due to the ethical problems inherent in this area of [science]
  • The people who believe that [animal testing] is necessary tend to say…
  • this is wrong for several reasons
  • [animal testing] is not as helpful in [developing medicines] as people think
  • There are many other reasons why [experimenting with animals] is wrong
  • it is grossly unethical to [subject these creatures to painful and demeaning experiences]
  • people may argue that there are benefits that come from [experimenting on animals], but in fact there is no good reason to continue doing this

You can try using and modifying these phrases in your own practice essays. If you want an expert to correct them for you, try my IELTS writing correction service .

Language about Animal Testing

The following phrases will also appear in my essay and can be used for talking about animal testing:

  • this area of science
  • animal testing should be banned
  • testing medicines before using them on human beings
  • figure out the cures to many serious illnesses
  • Medicines that work on animals do not always work on humans
  • if scientists give a mouse diabetes and then try various drugs to cure the problem
  • subject these creatures to painful and demeaning experiences
  • They are sentient beings
  • subjected to cruel and often unnecessary experiments
  • harmful both to humans and animals

It is also important to avoid repetition and that means finding ways to say “animal testing” without repeating the say words over and over. You could say:

  • testing on animals
  • experimenting on animals
  • subjecting animals to medical experiments
  • using animals in experiments

Again, it would be helpful to read articles and listen to podcasts on this topic in order to improve your vocabulary.

Sample Band 9 Answer

Over the past few decades, animal testing has been fiercely debated due to the ethical problems inherent in this area of science. This essay will look at both sides of the debate, before concluding that animal testing should be banned.

The people who believe that animal testing is necessary tend to say that there are serious benefits to humanity, such as testing medicines before using them on human beings. They believe that this will help to figure out the cures to many serious illnesses, which will make the world a better place for humans. However, this is wrong for several reasons.

Firstly, animal testing is not as helpful in developing medicines as people think. Medicines that work on animals do not always work on humans, and vice versa. As such, these trials are not just unnecessary but also profoundly unhelpful. For example, if scientists give a mouse diabetes and then try various drugs to cure the problem, they may find that there are twelve drugs that do not work on the mouse. However, maybe one of those drugs would have worked on a human. As such, animal testing would have caused more problems than it solved.

There are many other reasons why experimenting with animals is wrong. Perhaps most importantly, it is grossly unethical to subject these creatures to painful and demeaning experiences for the benefit of humanity. Animals do not exist for the benefit of people. They are sentient beings that deserve better than to be caged and subjected to cruel and often unnecessary experiments.

In conclusion, people may argue that there are benefits that come from experimenting on animals, but in fact there is no good reason to continue doing this. At best, these experiments are useless and at worst they are unethical and harmful both to humans and animals.

Final Notes

You can see that I have carefully crafted an argument that is strong. You may not agree with it, but it is hard to deny my points, which makes it effective in terms of Task Response. The structure is also solid and the ideas were well connected, making it very good in terms of Coherence and Cohesion . Note the inclusion of realistic and interesting ideas as well as concrete examples. My explanation of testing on mice was particularly effective here. It is better than giving some vague or unexplained idea.

Modern Zoos Are Not Worth the Moral Cost

After being captives of the pandemic for more than a year, we have begun experiencing the pleasures of simple outings: dining al fresco, shopping with a friend, taking a stroll through the zoo. As we snap a selfie by the sea lions for the first time in so long, it seems worth asking, after our collective ordeal, whether our pleasure in seeing wild animals up close is worth the price of their captivity.

Throughout history, men have accumulated large and fierce animals to advertise their might and prestige. Power-mad men from Henry III to Saddam Hussein’s son Uday to the drug kingpin Pablo Escobar to Charlemagne all tried to underscore their strength by keeping terrifying beasts captive. William Randolph Hearst created his own private zoo with lions, tigers, leopards and more at Hearst Castle. It is these boastful collections of animals, these autocratic menageries, from which the modern zoo, with its didactic plaques and $15 hot dogs, springs.

The forerunners of the modern zoo, open to the public and grounded in science, took shape in the 19th century. Public zoos sprang up across Europe, many modeled on the London Zoo in Regent’s Park. Ostensibly places for genteel amusement and edification, zoos expanded beyond big and fearsome animals to include reptile houses, aviaries and insectariums. Living collections were often presented in taxonomic order, with various species of the same family grouped together, for comparative study.

The first zoos housed animals behind metal bars in spartan cages. But relatively early in their evolution, a German exotic animal importer named Carl Hagenbeck changed the way wild animals were exhibited. In his Animal Park, which opened in 1907 in Hamburg, he designed cages that didn’t look like cages, using moats and artfully arranged rock walls to invisibly pen animals. By designing these enclosures so that many animals could be seen at once, without any bars or walls in the visitors’ lines of sight, he created an immersive panorama, in which the fact of captivity was supplanted by the illusion of being in nature.

Mr. Hagenbeck’s model was widely influential. Increasingly, animals were presented with the distasteful fact of their imprisonment visually elided. Zoos shifted just slightly from overt demonstrations of mastery over beasts to a narrative of benevolent protection of individual animals. From there, it was an easy leap to protecting animal species.

The “educational day out” model of zoos endured until the late 20th century, when zoos began actively rebranding themselves as serious contributors to conservation. Zoo animals, this new narrative went, function as backup populations for wild animals under threat, as well as “ambassadors” for their species, teaching humans and motivating them to care about wildlife. This conservation focus “ must be a key component ” for institutions that want to be accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, a nonprofit organization that sets standards and policies for facilities in the United States and 12 other countries.

This is the image of the zoo I grew up with: the unambiguously good civic institution that lovingly cared for animals both on its grounds and, somehow, vaguely, in their wild habitats. A few zoos are famous for their conservation work. Four of the zoos and the aquarium in New York City, for instance, are managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society, which is involved in conservation efforts around the world. But this is not the norm.

While researching my book on the ethics of human interactions with wild species, “Wild Souls,” I examined how, exactly, zoos contribute to the conservation of wild animals.

A.Z.A. facilities report spending approximately $231 million annually on conservation projects. For comparison, in 2018, they spent $4.9 billion on operations and construction. I find one statistic particularly telling about their priorities: A 2018 analysis of the scientific papers produced by association members between 1993 and 2013 showed that just about 7 percent of them annually were classified as being about “biodiversity conservation.”

Zoos accredited by the A.Z.A. or the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria have studbooks and genetic pedigrees and carefully breed their animals as if they might be called upon at any moment to release them, like Noah throwing open the doors to the ark, into a waiting wild habitat. But that day of release never quite seems to come.

There are a few exceptions. The Arabian oryx, an antelope native to the Arabian Peninsula, went extinct in the wild in the 1970s and then was reintroduced into the wild from zoo populations. The California condor breeding program, which almost certainly saved the species from extinction, includes five zoos as active partners. Black-footed ferrets and red wolves in the United States and golden lion tamarins in Brazil — all endangered, as well — have been bred at zoos for reintroduction into the wild. An estimated 20 red wolves are all that remain in the wild.

The A.Z.A. says that its members host “more than 50 reintroduction programs for species listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act.” Nevertheless, a vast majority of zoo animals (there are 800,000 animals of 6,000 species in the A.Z.A.’s zoos alone ) will spend their whole lives in captivity, either dying of old age after a lifetime of display or by being culled as “surplus.”

The practice of killing “surplus” animals is kept quiet by zoos, but it happens, especially in Europe. In 2014, the director of the E.A.Z.A. at the time estimated that between 3,000 and 5,000 animals are euthanized in European zoos each year. (The culling of mammals specifically in E.A.Z.A. zoos is “usually not more than 200 animals per year,” the organization said.) Early in the pandemic, the Neumünster Zoo in northern Germany coolly announced an emergency plan to cope with lost revenue by feeding some animals to other animals, compressing the food chain at the zoo like an accordion, until in the worst-case scenario, only Vitus, a polar bear, would be left standing. The A.Z.A.’s policies allow for the euthanasia of animals, but the president of the association, Dan Ashe, told me, “it’s very rarely employed” by his member institutions.

Mr. Ashe, a former director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, suggested that learning how to breed animals contributes to conservation in the long term, even if very few animals are being released now. A day may come, he said, when we need to breed elephants or tigers or polar bears in captivity to save them from extinction. “If you don’t have people that know how to care for them, know how to breed them successfully, know how to keep them in environments where their social and psychological needs can be met, then you won’t be able to do that,” he said.

The other argument zoos commonly make is that they educate the public about animals and develop in people a conservation ethic. Having seen a majestic leopard in the zoo, the visitor becomes more willing to pay for its conservation or vote for policies that will preserve it in the wild. What Mr. Ashe wants visitors to experience when they look at the animals is a “sense of empathy for the individual animal, as well as the wild populations of that animal.”

I do not doubt that some people had their passion for a particular species, or wildlife in general, sparked by zoo experiences. I’ve heard and read some of their stories. I once overheard two schoolchildren at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington confess to each other that they had assumed that elephants were mythical animals like unicorns before seeing them in the flesh. I remember well the awe and joy on their faces, 15 years later. I’d like to think these kids, now in their early 20s, are working for a conservation organization somewhere. But there’s no unambiguous evidence that zoos are making visitors care more about conservation or take any action to support it. After all, more than 700 million people visit zoos and aquariums worldwide every year, and biodiversity is still in decline.

animal is essay

In a 2011 study , researchers quizzed visitors at the Cleveland, Bronx, Prospect Park and Central Park zoos about their level of environmental concern and what they thought about the animals. Those who reported “a sense of connection to the animals at the zoo” also correlated positively with general environmental concern. On the other hand, the researchers reported, “there were no significant differences in survey responses before entering an exhibit compared with those obtained as visitors were exiting.”

A 2008 study of 206 zoo visitors by some members of the same team showed that while 42 percent said that the “main purpose” of the zoo was “to teach visitors about animals and conservation,” 66 percent said that their primary reason for going was “to have an outing with friends or family,” and just 12 percent said their intention was “to learn about animals.”

The researchers also spied on hundreds of visitors’ conversations at the Bronx Zoo, the Brookfield Zoo outside Chicago and the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. They found that only 27 percent of people bothered to read the signs at exhibits. More than 6,000 comments made by the visitors were recorded, nearly half of which were “purely descriptive statements that asserted a fact about the exhibit or the animal.” The researchers wrote , “In all the statements collected, no one volunteered information that would lead us to believe that they had an intention to advocate for protection of the animal or an intention to change their own behavior.”

People don’t go to zoos to learn about the biodiversity crisis or how they can help. They go to get out of the house, to get their children some fresh air, to see interesting animals. They go for the same reason people went to zoos in the 19th century: to be entertained.

A fine day out with the family might itself be justification enough for the existence of zoos if the zoo animals are all happy to be there. Alas, there’s plenty of heartbreaking evidence that many are not.

In many modern zoos, animals are well cared for, healthy and probably, for many species, content. Zookeepers are not mustache-twirling villains. They are kind people, bonded to their charges and immersed in the culture of the zoo, in which they are the good guys.

But many animals clearly show us that they do not enjoy captivity. When confined they rock, pull their hair and engage in other tics. Captive tigers pace back and forth, and in a 2014 study, researchers found that “the time devoted to pacing by a species in captivity is best predicted by the daily distances traveled in nature by the wild specimens.” It is almost as if they feel driven to patrol their territory, to hunt, to move, to walk a certain number of steps, as if they have a Fitbit in their brains.

The researchers divided the odd behaviors of captive animals into two categories: “impulsive/compulsive behaviors,” including coprophagy (eating feces), regurgitation, self-biting and mutilation, exaggerated aggressiveness and infanticide, and “stereotypies,” which are endlessly repeated movements. Elephants bob their heads over and over. Chimps pull out their own hair. Giraffes endlessly flick their tongues. Bears and cats pace. Some studies have shown that as many as 80 percent of zoo carnivores, 64 percent of zoo chimps and 85 percent of zoo elephants have displayed compulsive behaviors or stereotypies.

Elephants are particularly unhappy in zoos, given their great size, social nature and cognitive complexity. Many suffer from arthritis and other joint problems from standing on hard surfaces; elephants kept alone become desperately lonely; and all zoo elephants suffer mentally from being cooped up in tiny yards while their free-ranging cousins walk up to 50 miles a day. Zoo elephants tend to die young. At least 20 zoos in the United States have already ended their elephant exhibits in part because of ethical concerns about keeping the species captive.

Many zoos use Prozac and other psychoactive drugs on at least some of their animals to deal with the mental effects of captivity. The Los Angeles Zoo has used Celexa, an antidepressant, to control aggression in one of its chimps. Gus, a polar bear at the Central Park Zoo, was given Prozac as part of an attempt to stop him from swimming endless figure-eight laps in his tiny pool. The Toledo Zoo has dosed zebras and wildebeest with the antipsychotic haloperidol to keep them calm and has put an orangutan on Prozac. When a female gorilla named Johari kept fighting off the male she was placed with, the zoo dosed her with Prozac until she allowed him to mate with her. A 2000 survey of U.S. and Canadian zoos found that nearly half of respondents were giving their gorillas Haldol, Valium or another psychopharmaceutical drug.

Some zoo animals try to escape. Jason Hribal’s 2010 book, “Fear of the Animal Planet,” chronicles dozens of attempts. Elephants figure prominently in his book, in part because they are so big that when they escape it generally makes the news.

Mr. Hribal documented many stories of elephants making a run for it — in one case repairing to a nearby woods with a pond for a mud bath. He also found many examples of zoo elephants hurting or killing their keepers and evidence that zoos routinely downplayed or even lied about those incidents.

Elephants aren’t the only species that try to flee a zoo life. Tatiana the tiger, kept in the San Francisco Zoo, snapped one day in 2007 after three teenage boys had been taunting her. She somehow got over the 12-foot wall surrounding her 1,000-square-foot enclosure and attacked one of the teenagers, killing him. The others ran, and she pursued them, ignoring all other humans in her path. When she caught up with the boys at the cafe, she mauled them before she was shot to death by the police. Investigators found sticks and pine cones inside the exhibit, most likely thrown by the boys.

Apes are excellent at escaping. Little Joe, a gorilla, escaped from the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston twice in 2003. At the Los Angeles Zoo, a gorilla named Evelyn escaped seven times in 20 years. Apes are known for picking locks and keeping a beady eye on their captors, waiting for the day someone forgets to lock the door. An orangutan at the Omaha Zoo kept wire for lock-picking hidden in his mouth. A gorilla named Togo at the Toledo Zoo used his incredible strength to bend the bars of his cage. When the zoo replaced the bars with thick glass, he started methodically removing the putty holding it in. In the 1980s, a group of orangutans escaped several times at the San Diego Zoo. In one escape, they worked together: One held a mop handle steady while her sister climbed it to freedom. Another time, one of the orangutans, Kumang, learned how to use sticks to ground the current in the electrical wire around her enclosure. She could then climb the wire without being shocked. It is impossible to read these stories without concluding that these animals wanted out .

“I don’t see any problem with holding animals for display,” Mr. Ashe told me. “People assume that because an animal can move great distances that they would choose to do that.” If they have everything they need nearby, he argued, they would be happy with smaller territories. And it is true that the territory size of an animal like a wolf depends greatly on the density of resources and other wolves. But then there’s the pacing, the rocking. I pointed out that we can’t ask animals whether they are happy with their enclosure size. “That’s true,” he said. “There is always that element of choice that gets removed from them in a captive environment. That’s undeniable.” His justification was philosophical. In the end, he said, “we live with our own constraints.” He added, “We are all captive in some regards to social and ethical and religious and other constraints on our life and our activities.”

What if zoos stopped breeding all their animals, with the possible exception of any endangered species with a real chance of being released back into the wild? What if they sent all the animals that need really large areas or lots of freedom and socialization to refuges? With their apes, elephants, big cats, and other large and smart species gone, they could expand enclosures for the rest of the animals, concentrating on keeping them lavishly happy until their natural deaths. Eventually, the only animals on display would be a few ancient holdovers from the old menageries, animals in active conservation breeding programs and perhaps a few rescues.

Such zoos might even be merged with sanctuaries, places that take wild animals that because of injury or a lifetime of captivity cannot live in the wild. Existing refuges often do allow visitors, but their facilities are really arranged for the animals, not for the people. These refuge-zoos could become places where animals live. Display would be incidental.

Such a transformation might free up some space. What could these zoos do with it, besides enlarging enclosures? As an avid fan of botanical gardens, I humbly suggest that as the captive animals retire and die off without being replaced, these biodiversity-worshiping institutions devote more and more space to the wonderful world of plants. Properly curated and interpreted, a well-run garden can be a site for a rewarding “outing with friends or family,” a source of education for the 27 percent of people who read signs and a point of civic pride.

I’ve spent many memorable days in botanical gardens, completely swept away by the beauty of the design as well as the unending wonder of evolution — and there’s no uneasiness or guilt. When there’s a surplus, you can just have a plant sale.

Animal testing, referred to as animal experimentation, animal research, or in vivo testing, involves the utilization of animals other than humans in scientific experiments aimed at manipulating the factors influencing the behavior or biological processes being investigated.

Throughout history, the practice of animal testing has deep roots dating back centuries. The earliest recorded instances can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where animals were used for various scientific and medical purposes. The Greek physician Galen, during the second century AD, conducted experiments on animals to understand human anatomy and physiology. However, the formal establishment of animal testing as a systematic approach began to take shape during the 19th century with the emergence of modern medical research. In the late 1800s, advances in scientific knowledge and technology led to an increased demand for animal testing in various fields, including medicine, toxicology, and physiology. The development of anesthesia further facilitated the experimentation on animals by reducing pain and discomfort. Throughout the 20th century, animal testing became more widespread and institutionalized, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry.

Public opinion on animal testing is a complex and diverse topic, with viewpoints spanning a wide spectrum. While there are those who support the use of animals in scientific research for the advancement of human knowledge and medical breakthroughs, others express strong opposition due to ethical concerns and the perceived mistreatment of animals. Some people argue that animal testing is necessary for the development of life-saving treatments and the improvement of human health. They believe that animals provide valuable insights into human biology and the effectiveness of potential therapies. On the other hand, opponents of animal testing argue that it is cruel and unnecessary, advocating for alternative methods such as in vitro testing, computer modeling, and human cell-based assays. Public opinion on animal testing often hinges on the balance between scientific progress and animal welfare. The growing awareness of animal rights and ethical considerations has fueled debates and discussions surrounding the topic. As society becomes more conscious of animal welfare, there is an increasing demand for alternative testing methods and greater transparency in the treatment of animals involved in research. Ultimately, public opinion plays a crucial role in shaping policies and regulations surrounding animal testing.

1. Ethical concerns. 2. Inadequate human relevance. 3. Availability of alternatives. 4. Animal welfare. 5. Speciesism and moral status.

One example of media representation is the documentary "Earthlings" directed by Shaun Monson. This influential film explores different aspects of animal exploitation, including animal testing, and highlights the ethical concerns surrounding the practice. It has garnered widespread attention and prompted discussions about the treatment of animals in scientific research. Social media platforms have also become powerful tools for activists and organizations to share information and advocate for alternatives to animal testing. Hashtags like #StopAnimalTesting and #CrueltyFree have gained traction, raising awareness and encouraging conversations on the topic.

The topic of animal testing is important due to its ethical, scientific, and societal implications. From an ethical standpoint, it raises profound questions about the treatment of sentient beings and the moral responsibility we have towards animals. It prompts us to consider the balance between scientific progress and animal welfare, urging us to explore alternative methods that minimize harm. Scientifically, animal testing has been instrumental in advancing medical knowledge and developing treatments for various diseases. However, it is essential to continually evaluate its effectiveness, limitations, and potential alternatives to ensure both human and animal well-being. Furthermore, the issue of animal testing has societal implications as it reflects our values and priorities as a society. It prompts discussions about our relationship with animals, the extent of their rights, and the importance of promoting more humane practices.

The topic of animal testing is worth writing an essay about due to its complex nature and the multitude of perspectives it encompasses. It is a subject that elicits strong emotions and raises critical ethical, scientific, and social questions. Writing an essay on animal testing allows for an in-depth exploration of these issues and encourages critical thinking and analysis. By delving into the topic, one can examine the ethical considerations surrounding the use of animals in experiments, weighing the potential benefits against the moral implications. Additionally, it provides an opportunity to evaluate the scientific validity and reliability of animal testing as a method for understanding human biology and developing medical treatments. Furthermore, an essay on animal testing opens avenues for discussing alternative approaches and advancements in technology that can reduce or replace animal experimentation. It allows for an exploration of the societal impact of animal testing, including public opinion, legislation, and the influence of media.

1. Each year, millions of animals are used in scientific experiments worldwide. According to estimates, over 100 million animals, including rabbits, mice, rats, dogs, and primates, are subjected to testing for various purposes, such as biomedical research, drug development, and toxicity testing. 2. Animal testing is not always reliable in predicting human outcomes. Studies have shown that there can be significant differences between animals and humans in terms of anatomy, physiology, and drug metabolism. This raises concerns about the validity and relevance of using animal models for understanding human diseases and developing treatments. 3. Alternatives to animal testing are emerging and gaining traction. Scientists and researchers are actively exploring innovative methods, such as in vitro cell cultures, computer modeling, and organ-on-a-chip technology, to simulate human biology and predict human responses more accurately. These alternative approaches aim to reduce or eliminate the need for animal testing while still ensuring the safety and efficacy of new products and treatments.

Introduction

Our planet Earth is a very beautiful place. Here, all the living organisms are dependent on each other and live together. We, humans, are considered as the most intelligent species on Earth. But, we sometimes become very insensitive to the creatures who cannot express themselves, especially the animals. We harm them just to fulfill our needs. We have an essay here on cruelty towards animals which will cover the questions like - write an article on cruelty towards animals, cruelty towards animals paragraph, paragraph on stop cruelty towards animals, article on cruelty towards animals class 9 and so on.

Long Paragraph on Cruelty to Animals

Animals, just like human beings, deserve a peaceful life. Animals are an important part of our ecosystem and are very useful to us. But, we sometimes forget that they are also living creatures. We keep on harassing them and these poor creatures can't even express their feelings and grief. Cruelty towards animals have become an international matter of concern. This needs to be addressed as soon as possible and should be eliminated for ever.

We become cruel towards animals for two reasons - one to fulfill our needs and other for fun. We use animals for their fur, their skin, their meat, their teeth and horns too. Sometimes, we apply colours on them which harm their skin, we also burn crackers without thinking about them. Sometimes , the tea-shop keeper pours the hot water on the street dogs, which is a great example of cruel behaviour towards the animals.

The animal skins are used in textile industries. Their skin and body hairs are used to make exotic fabrics for us to use. Animal’s teeth, horns, skin and fur are used to make home decor items which we beautifully use to decorate our homes without thinking how much pain animals go through for giving us these luxuries.

Another industry that contributes in cruelty to animals is the cosmetic industry. Whenever we buy any cosmetic products, we always make sure that the product is safe on our skin. But, we hardly realise that these products are tested on animals before it reaches us. The chemicals are often injected in animal’s bodies or applied on their skin. Sometimes, these are tested on their eyes too. And if the test fails, it sometimes leads to the animal's death also. These tests cause itching and burning too. But,we the human beings, keep on torturing the animals for our own purposes.

Our progressing medical science also has a big role in harassing the animals and showing our cruelty towards them. For the trials of medicines, animals are selected. They are then injected with the trial medicines without thinking about their pain. They are often kept in freezing temperatures for the experiments. We also ill treat the animals at zoos and circuses. The place where they are kept is not cleaned often. Also, the feeding methods are not too hygienic. These result in various diseases and often to their death.

Many animals and birds, in the name of pets, are being sold everyday. These animals are kept in cages or are kept tied with a chain. Most often, they are beaten up. The street dogs are often beaten up by the shopkeepers if they are found roaming around. Many cows are found roaming around the garbage heaps finding food. Many times many animals are hit by the fast moving traffic. These all are the examples of cruelty towards animals.

But now it's enough! We, the human beings, who are considered as the most intelligent creatures on Earth have to stop playing with these poor creatures' lives. We have to raise our voice and stop being cruel to the animals. We have to bring new strong laws to protect the animals. Every school should teach students how to respect and protect our fellow creatures - animals. Parents themselves should treat the animals with respect and love and should teach their wards the same.

We should always keep one thing in mind that we cannot survive without animals. Everything on Earth has its own purpose. The animals help in balancing our ecosystem. We have to take a call and save our environment, our mother Earth and our animals.

Short Paragraph on Stop Cruelty Towards Animals

Cruelty means a behaviour that harms others physically or mentally. But it's a matter of shame that we only consider human beings when it comes to cruelty. We forget that animals are also living creatures and we should not be cruel to them. Just because these creatures can not express themselves as we do, we forget that what we are doing to them if someone does to us, we will die.

Human industries that contribute to this cruelty are - Textile, Cosmetics, Home Decor and many more. Animal skins and furs are used in textile industries, animal skin, fur, horns and teeths are used to make home decor items. Many animals are killed for their meat also. Animals are ill-treated in laboratories where they are used for testing and experiments. They are often kept in freezing conditions or in boiling conditions.

It is high time now that we stop abusing these poor animals. They are also living beings and are very very important to us as without them the whole ecosystem will disbalance. We should raise awareness and stop these cruelties against animals.

Conclusion:

Cruelty to animals has become a nationwide problem nowadays. The government has already imposed a few laws and a few more are needed. Along with that, social awareness is also required. Students should learn how to treat animals in schools. Parents should also treat their pets well and teach their children. Our planet Earth is a very beautiful place. Here, all the living organisms are dependent on each other and live together. We, humans, are considered the most intelligent species on Earth. But, we sometimes become very insensitive to the creatures who cannot express themselves, especially the animals. We harm them just to fulfil our needs.

2. How do we Use Animal Teeth and Horns?

We use animal teeth and horns to make decorative pieces with which we decorate our home and offices. These decorative items are truly expensive for nature and its habitats. The most common example of animal cruelty is hunting. Animals are hunted for their meat, bones, leather or any other precious body parts. This can cause the species to be endangered or even go extinct. Another example of animal cruelty is enslaving them for entertainment or hard work. There are a lot of examples of animals being cruelty trained in circuses, kept as prisoners in zoos, or used as labourers to get the hardest jobs done.

3. What is meant by cruelty to animals?

Animal cruelty is defined as harming animals by either subjecting them to slavery, product-testing, or hunting. Killing endangered species for their meat, bones, or leather also comes under animal cruelty and is a punishable offence. The government of India has passed a lot of laws that prevent cruelty to animals from happening on a large scale. But still, in some neglected places like undeveloped villages, slums, or forests, these activities are followed illegally. And the government and some big governing bodies like PETA are working hard towards eradicating any kind of animal cruelty.

4. How does cruelty affect animals?

Cruelty towards animals can be dangerous for their overall species. There are a lot of examples like dodos, sabre tooth tigers, etc that have gone extinct because of excessive hunting. It is also morally incorrect to torture any living thing to die for the sake of an experiment. That's why animal testing is also banned. Animal testing is another example of animal cruelty and can hurt animals and even cruelly kill them. Animal cruelty should be banned completely.

5. How can we prevent animal cruelty?

There are very clear action steps to take to prevent animal cruelty. We can be responsible pet owners and start showing love and affection towards the animals at our home. We can adopt or at least hand over the abandoned baby animals we find on the streets to animal care centres. We can prohibit the use of animal-tested cosmetics or any products. We can even file a complaint against anyone who is abusing stray animals or harming them.

Chemical Found In Cheerios, Quaker Oats May Cause Fertility Issues, Study Suggests: What To Know About Chlormequat

A round 80% of Americans have been exposed to the plant pesticide chlormequat, which causes fertility and growth issues in animals, according to a new study published Thursday, though other studies found it caused no affect on fertility and the Environmental Protection Agency said there were no adverse risks in humans.

Around four out of five Americans are being exposed to chlormequat chloride, a “highly toxic agricultural chemical” linked to fertility problems and birth issues in animals, according to an Environmental Working Group study published in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology on Thursday, with the EWG saying the issues in animals suggests "the potential for similar harm to humans.”

Chlormequat exposure in rats also resulted in reduced sperm motility, decreased male testosterone levels, delayed onset of puberty and decreased weights of male reproductive organs, according to the study.

The study of Americans examined urine samples between 2017 and 2023, and found the number of participants with concentrations of chlormequat in their urine increased by more than 20% during that time frame from 69% in 2017 to 90% in 2023, suggesting consumer exposure is on the rise.

The chemical is found in many oat-based foods: the EWG tested 13 oat-based foods like Cheerios and Quaker Old Fashioned Oats and detected higher levels than deemed safe by the group in 11 foods, according to a 2023 report —Forbes has reached out to General Mills, which makes Cheerios, and PepsiCo, which makes Quaker Oats, for comment.

Chlormequat is only approved for use in the U.S. in ornamental plants like flowers, but the EPA began allowing a certain amount of chlormequat on imported oats and other foods in 2018 and increased the amount in 2020, which is how Americans end up consuming it, according to the EWG’s 2023 report.

It’s used as a pesticide in plants to control plant size by blocking the hormones that stimulate plant growth before they bloom, according to the EPA.

Chlormequat only stays in the body for 24 hours, so the high levels found in the test population suggest “regular exposure,” according to the EWG; the group recommends buying and consuming organic oat products, which aren’t grown with synthetic pesticides like chlormequat, to reduce exposure to the chemical.

Crucial Quote

“The federal government has a vital role in ensuring that pesticides are adequately monitored, studied and regulated,” Alexis Temkin, lead author of the study and a senior toxicologist with the EWG, said in a statement. “Yet the EPA continues to abdicate its responsibility to protect children from the potential health harms of toxic chemicals like chlormequat in food.”

Key Background

Though research needs to be done on chlormequat’s risk in humans, there have been several studies that looked into the effects on animals. Researchers studied the effects of chlormequat on rat embryos and found the chemical causes birth defects such as an increase in head and body size, according to a 2020 Toxicology study . Female pigs given chlormequat-treated grains had difficulty mating compared to those on a chlormequat-free diet, according to an International Journal of Andrology study . Male mice who were exposed to the chemical had a decreased fertilization rate of over 40% .

Several studies didn’t find any impacts on reproduction in female mice or male pigs , or reduced fertilization rates in male mice exposed to chlormequat. The EPA proposed allowing the use of chlormequat in oats and other grains in 2023. Before proposing its use in grains, the EPA assessed whether exposure to chlormequat had any adverse effects in humans, and it found no dietary, residential or aggregate risks. Grains are susceptible to lodging —the bending and breakage of grain stems—which can negatively affect grain yield and harvestability. Chlormequat decreases stem height, which reduces lodging and potentially increases yield, according to the EPA. Chlormequat decreased plant height up to 29% and increased grain yields by 4% when used on wheat, according to a 2019 study published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.
