Thousands of ride-hailing and delivery workers in the U.S. and the U.K. went on strike on Valentine’s Day, calling for higher pay and other changes to their working conditions.

In the U.S., Uber and Lyft drivers planned daylong strikes in Chicago; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Miami; Orlando and Tampa, Florida; Hartford, Connecticut; Newark, New Jersey; Austin, Texas; and Providence, Rhode Island. Drivers were also holding midday demonstrations at airports in those cities, according to Justice for App Workers, the group organizing the effort.

Meanwhile, U.K. delivery drivers for Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Just Eat and Stuart said they would turn off their apps and refuse deliveries between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. The group Delivery Job U.K., which called for the walkout, said on Instagram that the strike was “a crucial opportunity to be seen and heard by society.”

Of eight delivery drivers who spoke with The Associated Press on the streets of London Wednesday, all but one said they planned to halt work at 5 p.m. Several, however, questioned whether the strike was long enough to make enough of a financial dent in the businesses.

(AP Photo/Nam Y. Huh, File)

“One day is not effective,” said Evadur Rahman. “If we strike more than one day — two, three, four days — they’re gonna be affected.”

Rahman, a Deliveroo driver who planned to participate in the strike, said his daily pay dropped in recent months from about 140 pounds ($175) for eight hours of work to around 100 pounds ($126). He said he wanted the company to raise the minimum rate it pays per order from 2.90 pounds ($3.64) to closer to 5 pounds ($6.28).

“They must improve the minimum pay,” Rahman said. “It’s not enough for survival in this country.”

Justice for App Workers estimated that thousands of drivers stopped working Wednesday, and said that workers in 12 or more cities beyond the original 10 had held impromptu demonstrations. Delivery Job U.K. had expected 3,000 people to strike.

Jocilyn Floyd, who has been driving for Uber for nearly a decade, joined the picket line Wednesday at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago.

“Uber has proven time and time again that they’re putting profits over people. In shareholder meetings they discuss profits; there’s no question about safety, protection from deactivation or compensation,” Floyd said.

Uber said Wednesday that the strike wasn’t hurting driver availability or customer demand.

“Despite the headlines, we’ve seen no impact to our operations or reliability for riders. In fact, in most markets there are more drivers on the road today than there were during the same period last week,” an Uber spokesperson said.

Uber and other companies that rely on self-employed gig workers say those workers appreciate the flexibility of the job. But many gig workers are pushing to unionize, saying that would give them the ability to bargain over compensation, safety measures and other benefits.

In November, that unionization effort saw a setback in the U.K. , when Britain’s top court ruled that Deliveroo couriers don’t have collective bargaining rights because they aren’t considered employees.

Deliveroo said Wednesday that it has a voluntary partnership with a union that includes annual discussions on pay and it also provides couriers with free insurance and sick pay.

“Rider retention rates are high and the overwhelming majority of riders tell us that they are satisfied working with us,” the company said in a statement.

Rachel Gumpert, the spokesperson for Justice for App Workers, described ride-hailing as a “mobile sweatshop,” with some workers routinely putting in 60 to 80 hours per week. Justice for App Workers, which says it represents 130,000 ride-hailing and delivery workers, is seeking higher wages, access to health care and an appeals process so companies can’t deactivate drivers without warning.

But ride-hailing companies say they already pay a fair wage and have an appeals process in place for deactivations.

Earlier this month, Lyft said it began guaranteeing that drivers will make at least 70% of their fares each week, and it lays out its fees more clearly for drivers in a new earnings statement. Lyft also unveiled a new in-app button that lets drivers appeal deactivation decisions.

“We are constantly working to improve the driver experience,” Lyft said in a statement. Its U.S. drivers make an average of $30.68 per hour, or $23.46 per hour after expenses, Lyft said.

Uber said its U.S. drivers make an average of $33 per hour. The company also said it allows drivers to dispute deactivations.

Cannabis plants at Glass Pharms’ £20m production facility

A greener weed: the UK firm growing carbon-neutral cannabis

Glass Pharms hope its approach could show the way for all kinds of energy-intensive horticulture in the UK

F or 26 years, Olivier Dehon worked in the corporate sector, ending up as chief financial officer for Xerox in the UK and Ireland before retiring four years ago. Last month he delivered his first consignment of high-strength cannabis.

Dehon’s dope is legal and above board, produced to supply the UK’s burgeoning market for medical cannabis on prescription. What’s more, Dehon and his colleagues believe it is the first carbon-neutral indoor weed grown anywhere in the world.

They hope that their plan to produce carbon-neutral cannabis could show the way to securing the supply chain for all kinds of energy-intensive horticulture in the UK, as climate-related weather fluctuations increasingly imperil the supply from overseas, and soaring energy prices make production in the UK increasingly uneconomical.

Despite its reputation as a mind-altering drug beloved of hippies and other eco-conscious types, cannabis – and particularly illicit cannabis – is not very green. Indoor cultivation of 1kg of cannabis requires about 6,000kWh of energy, with a mammoth carbon footprint of 1,400kg, according to recent research by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, the EU’s drugs watchdog.

That means just one joint, rolled with a third of a gram of weed, has the same carbon impact as driving a plug-in hybrid electric car almost three miles.

Scaled up, the impact is humongous. In the Netherlands alone, the amount of electricity stolen for cannabis production in 2021 was about 1bn kWh, equivalent to the annual household electricity demand of Rotterdam, a city of 650,000 people.

Under the blindingly bright lights of Glass Pharms’ state-of-the-art £20m production facility nestled in a discreet location in the Wiltshire countryside, it is easy to see why. Hundreds of LEDs shine on to pallets loaded with cannabis plants, which make their way on rails through growing chambers. The air temperature is several degrees warmer than the cold winter air outside. All variables are controlled to produce the most perfectly balanced cannabis crop possible.

And yet the entire site functions without drawing a single electron from the National Grid. Glass Pharms’ production facility is situated next door to an anaerobic digestion plant, from which it sources all of its power and heat. One day, says Dehon, they hope to harvest the carbon-dioxide emissions from the methane biogas burned by the plant to feed their plants.

Pink lighting inside Glass Pharms’ production facility

Mark Heley, Glass Pharms’ head of external relations, says: “The essential problem we’re solving is a problem which goes way beyond cannabis in the UK, which is how do we actually do energy intensive horticulture.”

To this end, the entire operation is designed according to the principles of circular economics. “What we’ve done here is we look at the fundamental problem, which is that if you’re growing plants indoors in the UK, in this climate, the factors that you’ve got to have are basically heat, power and, particularly in the case of cannabis, carbon dioxide,” Heley says.

“Since the outputs from an anaerobic digestion plant is power and then, effectively, the waste heat – we are talking about a very considerable amount of heat, more than a megawatt – and also it produces carbon dioxide, we’ve got inputs to our system that are not only the outputs of the adjoining plant, they are waste products of the adjoining plant.”

A host of other technologies are employed in giving Glass Pharms’ cannabis the lowest possible climate impact. All of the water used in the plant is captured rainwater, treated, stored and recycled in its own closed-loop systems. Even the air that flows across the plants inside the glass house is continually recirculated to preserve heat and optimum levels of humidity.

But why grow cannabis? Since a change in the law in 2018, after decades of prohibition, cannabis has been available on prescription to patients showing a genuine medical need.

Demand has grown rapidly: in the first nine months of 2023, nearly 24 tons of cannabis was imported to the UK, almost three times as much as in the whole of the previous year, according to government figures . But supply remains an issue: with all of the UK’s supplies of medical cannabis sourced from overseas, UK patients have to contend with shortages of supply or products going stale on the shelf.

That has left a lucrative market uncatered for, with a crop that is several orders of magnitude higher in value than red peppers – a margin that allows for innovation.

“You get more space to play,” says Dehon, Glass Pharms’ chief financial officer. “You could [grow peppers] but then the risk for an investor and for us goes higher and you have to be sailing a lot closer to the wind. The margin for error is a lot smaller.

“If you were to try to do cucumbers here, you would not be able to do it. Because the margin and the price at which you could sell a cucumber versus imported ones, you’ll struggle to be competitive. Even if everybody takes the minimum margin, and even if there’s no greedy corporate in the process, it doesn’t matter. You can’t make it work at this point.”

At some point, however, with climate-related weather chaos, it will have to work. This time last year the then environment secretary Thérèse Coffey suggested to MPs that UK consumers could switch to turnips after storms and cold weather in southern Europe and north Africa decimated yields of salad crops, and UK producers hit by rising energy costs warned that their operations risked going out of business.

“There’s a huge assumption in the UK that we will be able to import cheap food from los plasticos [plastic greenhouses] along the Spanish coast. That and Morocco are where we are sourcing cheap agriculture,” says Heley.

“As extreme climate events increase, those crops are failing more and more. And therefore what we’re seeing is less availability of produce in the UK supermarkets. So if we don’t do this – this kind of horticulture where the design of the greenhouse from its very fundamental principles is designed to be as energy efficient as possible – a future without salad is a real possibility for the country.”

Digital banking giant Revolut is launching phone plans for travelers in the UK

thumbnail

  • Digital banking startup Revolut is launching travel eSIM plans in the U.K. that give users access to data abroad without suffering roaming charges.
  • The product launch is a rare step for a financial services company, and is part of Revolut's long-term ambition to become "super app" with multiple services spanning finance and travel.
  • Subscribers to Revolut’s Ultra subscription tier will get access to 3GB of data for use across different countries, which resets every month.

British financial technology company Revolut is launching phone plans in the U.K., the company has told CNBC exclusively, making it the first financial services firm in the country to offer telecom plans — and among the first globally.

The digital banking and payments unicorn said it will start offering eSIMs — SIM cards that can be stored virtually rather than in physical form in the device — this week. The plans will begin rolling out for users in the coming days.

Customers on Revolut's basic app experience without any subscription can get a standard eSIM plan that allows them to access their Revolut app so that they can top up their phone as and when needed. For instance, if a Revolut user arrives at an airport and runs out of data on their current SIM provider, they can still access features on their Revolut app free of charge and top up their data as usual.

Revolut customers on the company's £55 ($69.47) a month, premium Ultra package will get 3GB of data to use globally, with a rolling refresh every month. That means that they will not have to worry about unexpected roaming charges when entering another country.

The cost of using mobile data overseas has increased for Brits in recent years. Several mobile carriers, including BT, Vodafone and Three, have reintroduced roaming charges since the U.K. left the European Union. Brits were previously able to travel across the EU without incurring roaming fees. Meanwhile, most mobile carriers don't include free data in non-EU countries as part of their standard plans.

Revolut users without an Ultra subscription can get an introductory offer of 100MB of free data if they apply before May 1. The offer is valid for seven days.

Revolut has partnered with U.K. mobile network operator 1Global, formerly known as Truphone, to launch its eSIM.

Tara Massoudi, general manager of premium products at Revolut, said the decision for Revolut to launch eSIMs was to turn the company into more of an all-encompassing "super app" with services spanning bank accounts, currency exchange, insurance, travel bookings and airport lounge passes.

"Our ambition is very much to be the financial super app," Massoudi told CNBC. "This is really in that direction."

"Travel is a huge value prop that we've always had, and it's still remained super important for our users," Massoudi added. "So it's important that we continue to innovate in that space."

Launching phone plans is a rare step from a financial services firm. Plenty of challenger banks have bundled new services into their apps to give consumers more of a reason to use them over alternatives. The aim is to pull in a stickier customer base long term.

That's pretty key in Revolut's case. The company, which notched a $33 billion valuation in 2022, has been trying to get more of a loyal user base and grow its line of paid subscriptions to diversify revenue.

For that, it needs customers who use it as more of a permanent banking provider for all their financial needs, rather than just an optional low-fee travel account for when they go abroad.

What is a super app, and why haven't they gone global?

Hermann Frank, CEO of tech startup Gigs, which helps businesses set up and sell their own branded eSIM phone and data plans, said Revolut's move could prove lucrative for the firm in the long term.

"This move presents an easy avenue for Revolut to unlock a lucrative new revenue stream and could play a vital part in the company's long-term profitability," Frank told CNBC via email.

"By enriching their offering with branded phone plans, neobanks like Revolut can fuse two essential services in one single app, easing the user experience and further compounding stickiness."

Retail spending on travel connectivity services, including roaming packages and travel SIMs, is expected to rise to over $30 billion by 2028, according to roaming and connectivity market intelligence and consulting firm Kaleido Intelligence.

"We foresee many other banks launching phone plans and travel offers in the coming 18 months," Frank added.

Revolut isn't the first fintech ever to launch an eSIM offering. Indian credit card startup Zolve, which helps immigrants set up banking before arriving in the U.S., started offering phone plans attached to physical SIMs and eSIMs in August.
