How to Write a Great College Essay About Music (with examples)

Admissions officer reviewed by Ben Bousquet, M.Ed Former Vanderbilt University

Key Takeaway

Ask any admissions officer if they’ve read a college essay about music, and they’ll definitely say yes. Between music extracurriculars and academic interests in music, it’s is one of the most common college essay topics.

So does that mean that you shouldn’t write your college essay about music?

Not necessarily. But as with any common college essay topic, some approaches are better than others.

Let’s get into it.

Why you should (and shouldn’t) write your Common App essay about music

As we explained in our Stanford Items exercise , writing your college essay on a common topic isn’t off-limits. In fact, most college essays share common topics and themes. Trying to find a completely unique, never-been-done-before topic is almost impossible. And writing about a quirky topic in hopes of coming across as unique usually backfires.

In other words, it’s likely that you’ll write about the same topic as someone else.

The problem arises, however, when you write about a common topic in a cliche way . Cliches are always a danger in college essays, but in especially college essay topics that tend to surface again and again.

To avoid cliches, your college essay about music needs to be deeply personal, specific, and meaningful. You’ll want to let go of any over-generalizations or truisms and focus on the details of your own story.

Because you’ll need to write meaningfully and vulnerably, you should only write your college essay about music if you have something genuine and significant to say.

The Best Ways to Approach Your College Essay about Music

College essays about music aren’t off the table, but you should be thoughtful in how you write about them. The following two approaches will help you avoid cliches and find an authentic, meaningful story that fulfills all the requirements of a personal statement .

Writing about music as an academic interest

If you’re interested in studying music in college, then you can consider writing your college essay about music as an academic interest. A college essay about your academic interest in music can show fantastic intellectual fit with a school.

Let’s say you want to study music theory or composition. You might write about a topic you find compelling, a problem you’ve solved, or even a recounting of your journey becoming interested in the subject.

Or maybe you’re an aspiring performer planning on studying music performance. As an admissions officer, I read outstanding essays about students performing their favorite pieces, creating emotional music projects, and teaching lessons to young children.

No matter your topic, your goal with this approach is to show an intellectual spark, a curiosity and passion that will demonstrate to your admissions officers that you’ll be a great addition to the music community on their campuses.

Writing poignantly about a deeply meaningful extracurricular

The previous approach is great if you want to study music, but what if music is just an extracurricular passion of yours? Don’t worry—you can still write about it.

In that case, the best way is to focus on meaning. Remember: personal statements should be deeply-meaningful reflections on your personal strengths.

To start, reflect on your music extracurricular. Is it playing guitar in a band? Playing trombone in your school’s symphony? Learning piano from your grandma? How your love of poetry turned into a love of songwriting?

Next, think about what strengths you have to showcase. If you play guitar in a band, maybe you want to highlight your collaborative spirit. If you love poetry and songwriting, perhaps you focus on your creativity.

Writing about your love of music in a way that draws upon your strengths will make sure that your Common App essay avoids the following two approaches and gives admissions officers a reason to admit you.

Approaches to Avoid

While the following two approaches aren’t necessarily bad, they are the most cliche ways of approaching a college essay about music. You might want to consider avoiding them.

An inauthentic tale of triumph

Let me tell you a cliche story.

When I was in fourth grade, I decided to join the school orchestra. I found it exceedingly difficult at first. No matter how hard I tried, I never could seem to place my fingers correctly on the fingerboard. Every sound I made mimicked a screeching cat. But I decided not to give up. I practiced every day after school and on the weekends. By the time I was in ninth grade, I had made it into my high school’s top orchestra.

Is that a lovely story? Yes, absolutely. Is it hearty enough for a college essay? No. While it tells a good narrative of growth and progress, it remains on the surface of the writer’s life. It comes across as a convenient way to brag about your strengths instead of exploring them in a genuine way. In this example, the story also focuses on events that happened way too far in the past.

A song that changed your life

This approach is by far the most common cliche in college essays about music. We’ve all been there: a favorite song that transports you to a moment in your life whenever you hear it. It makes sense that you’d want to write about yours.

But there’s a problem with this approach. Too often, it reads as trite or unoriginal, and the end result usually doesn’t say much about the writer. And when it does, the message an admissions officer gets doesn’t typically give them any more reason to admit you. Since you want your college essay to be meaningful, even vulnerable, and strengths-based, you’re better off choosing another topic that better speaks to who you are.

Key Takeaways + Examples

College essays about music aren’t for everyone. But when you get it right, you can strike the perfect chord with admissions officers (you’re welcome for the pun).

As you go, dig deep, find something genuinely personal, and try to avoid the most common and cliche ways of approaching the topic.

✍️ Music Essay: How to Write

So, you have chosen your essay title. Now it’s time to start writing! But before you begin, read the sections below and learn how to organize your work.

How to Describe Music in Writing

You might think that writing about music is like dancing about architecture. Well, it is not an easy task, but we know how to cope with it.

Follow these tips while writing:

  • Make a comparison.  Explain which characteristics of a piece remind you or are identical to those of another one. It’s better to avoid comparing music from different composers in this case. Instead, evaluate and analyze two musical pieces from the same composer.
  • Describe the melody and dynamics.  You may want to use musical terms to show your knowledge and proficiency. Define the genre and what kind of instruments and tones are used.
  • Explain how it makes you feel.  You can use basic human emotions to describe the feelings of a listener. For example, it can be anger, tenderness, irritation, excitement, or nostalgia.
  • Use metaphorical language.  You may try using your imagination to create analogies. Be careful not to make your metaphors overcomplicated, as it may confuse the readers.

Essays about Music: Descriptive Words

Do you want your essay on music to be interesting and expressive? Then you may want to use descriptive vocabulary. Here are some of the terms that you can use in your essay to make it sound more professional:

  • Tempo is the “speed” of music. There are fixed expressions to define tempo—for example, largo, moderate, or presto. You can also describe how fast the music feels.
  • Timbre is the term that evaluates the “color” of music. Even if two instruments play the same note of the same volume, the sound is still different. This is how you can notice the color of the tone. For example, gentle, clear, heavy, or warm can be the adjectives to describe timbre.
  • Dynamics define the volume levels of music. The volume can be the same all the time, for example loud or soft. If the volume of music changes, you can use such expressions as “gradually gets louder” “or suddenly becomes soft.”
  • Harmony characterizes how all the notes and chords sound together. The sequence of chords—chord progression—defines how satisfying the melody is for the listener. For example, if the transitions are smooth, you can use such words as “relaxed” or “warm.”

Music Essay Outline

Like any other assignment, writing about music requires a proper essay outline that will guide you through the writing. The following sections will help you with that.

Before you start, here are some tips that will help you prepare for writing:

  • Do some prior research. Try to learn as much as possible about the piece you will be writing about. It’s also helpful to listen to the music several times with headphones to notice more details.
  • Don’t be afraid of asking questions. Consult your instructor if you’re unsure about your topic or the piece you have chosen.
  • Choose the topic that you like. If you’re passionate about a subject, it is always easier to write about it. Who said that homework could not be interesting?
  • Follow the recommendations that your instructor gives. It includes word limit, formatting style, deadline, and essay type.

Music Essay Introduction

The introduction is the section where you come up with a brief explanation of the topic. You may start it with a quotation, definition, or short statement that catches your reader’s attention and leads them to the essay subject.

A thesis statement is usually the last sentence of the introduction that defines the content of body paragraphs. It needs to be specific and not longer than two sentences. If you decide to shift the focus of your essay while writing, it’s crucial to change your thesis too.

Different types of essays require different thesis statements. Let’s take a closer look:

Music Essay Body

Your essay’s body is the most significant part of your writing. Here, you provide evidence and explanations of your claims.

The typical body paragraph structure includes:

  • A topic sentence explaining the argument for a particular paragraph.
  • An introduction to the evidence you gathered to support an argument.
  • Quotes and facts (don’t forget about proper citation!) and their explanation.
  • A connection between the evidence and the essay topic.
  • Paragraph transitions  leading your reader to the next section.

Topic Sentence about Music

Topic sentences can be used as a roadmap to writing your essay. Each body paragraph begins with a topic sentence that defines what the paragraph is about. It introduces the argument or main thought that will be explained. It’s also connected with the thesis statement.

It’s essential to make your thesis easy to understand, so it’s better not to overcomplicate it. For example, here’s an unsuccessful topic sentence with unnecessary words:

As stated above, the guitar is an essential musical instrument in rock music that defines how it sounds.

Instead, you can formulate it like this:

The guitar is the most iconic musical instrument in rock music that defines how it sounds.

Music Essay Conclusion

When writing a conclusion for your essay on music, you can use the following structure:

  • Summarize the text in a few sentences.
  • Review the key points of your paper.
  • Paraphrase the thesis.

To make your essay conclusion more effective, avoid the following:

As we discussed, your music essay can be just about anything; it can be a concert report or an analytical paper about the evolution of music.
  • Continue by researching the topic. Gather all the relevant materials and information for your essay on music and start taking notes. You can use these notes as building blocks for the paper. Be prepared; even for short essays, you may need to read books and long articles.

A thesis statement is a must as it informs readers what the entire music essay is about. Don't be afraid to be bold in your statement; new outlooks are always appreciated.
  • Next, you'll need a music essay introduction. Here you introduce the readers to the context and background information about the research topic. It should be clear, brief, and engaging. You should set the tone of your essay from the very beginning. Don't forget the introduction is where the thesis statement goes.
  • One of the most important parts of essay writing is crafting a central body paragraph about music. This is where you elaborate on your thesis, make main points, and support them with the evidence you gathered beforehand. Remember, your music essay should be well structured and depict a clear picture of your ideas.
  • Next, you will need to come up with an ideal closing paragraph. Here you will need to once again revisit the main points in your music essay, restate them in a logical manner and give the readers your final thoughts.
  • Don't forget to proofread your college essay. Whether you write a long or short essay on music, there will be grammatical and factual errors. Revise and look through your writing with a critical mind. You may find that some parts need rewriting.

Inside Out – essays by an art journalist. Essay 4: sound.

Sound in visual arts is like colour in music. It is something that we cannot visualize directly. Or can we? This essay on the new .ART blog series, written by our “secret agent” in the art world, covers yet another fundamental element of the art world – sound, and all the implications that come with it.

essay about art and music

The role of sound in visual arts

At the turn of this century artists bumped into each art’s borders that we cannot cross at least because of the limitations of our senses. Vision and hearing are separated by an insurmountable barrier in classical art. Still, visual and sound information is read and processed by our brain – and much in the same way. For example, binocular vision enables us to comparatively assess distances and determine volumes as information from our left and right eyes is added up and summarised. Similarly, summarised is the information coming from our right and left ears, which permits sound direction finding (though very weak as compared to some animals’).

Artists have repeatedly probed into this barrier, trying to awaken our mind’s eye and inner ear to art. This was first done by symbolists, who tried to convince visitors of art shows and musical concerts that colours did resound (the Yellow Sound play by Wassily Kandinsky) and that symphony poems could be transposed onto the canvas just in the same way as Lithuanian artist Čiurlionis did.

Those ideas of the artistic and subjective portrayal of sound have become commonplace now. They have even penetrated into kindergartens where boys and girls are asked to draw the music they hear. It seems to be tacitly understood that no adult will do this. The resulting works are too subjective and hard to distinguish from ordinary expressive abstractions.

The Yellow Sound play by Wassily Kandinsky

Futurists and scientists – music 2.0

Then the Futurists took to music in art. They invented ‘noise music’ or ‘action music’ and linked it to visual art; it’s no coincidence that Luigi Russolo, inventor of L’arte dei Rumori , had practised as a painter before his experiments with sound. And, incidentally, returned to painting after his experimentation period was over. City sounds and car noises came not only into object music but, more broadly, into art in general as one of the colours in its palette, to portray the world around us more objectively. Instead of looking at colour combinations in a landscape in search of musical phrases, noise music wanted us to see a cityscape using its sound reference points.

Artistic-minded scientists and engineers began inventing special electro-acoustic instruments to convert motion into sound. A person would move in electromagnetic field and his motions would produce sounds. One could learn to move so as to play harmonic music, or one could produce inspired dissonances. Machines like the Thereminvox from Léon Theremin were thus the precursors of modern installation machines. As was the Optophone piano invented by Vladimir Baranoff-Rossine – one that produced colour projections as well as sounds as its keys were pressed..

The role of sound in cinema

But the heaviest sound invasion into art occurred in the cinema, of course. That was commercial and on a massive scale; the stage of artistic experiments was passed instantly if at all. After the first timid and funny experiments, motion pictures began starring sound. Walt Disney’s Fantasia was a farewell to silent films, but a very good-humoured one, with a symbolist portrayal of music by Schubert, Debussy, Mussorgsky, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky,. In our times, soundless cinema looks an exception and an artistic experiment but can still take multiple Oscars, like the French film The Artist did earlier this year.

Impact of sound as a creative tool

Two years ago, one of the main prizes addressed to modern visual artists, the Turner Prize, went to Susan Philipsz whose sound installation was actually a replay of 17 th -century Scottish folk songs. The place of sound in modern art was thus officially marked. Modern artists cannot use sound; as we have already discussed, the effect of modern art is measured by its impression intensity over the smallest time span possible. In this sense sound has a huge potential. Sound has an incomparably greater physical power over humans than painting. Sound splashes paint and breaks glasses.  All artists are busy acting on our senses, but nobody has ever fallen dead in front of a picture; colour combinations cannot kill, but sound combinations certainly can.

Besides, sound has become a product of modern civilization, which overfeeds us with it. Our environment is much thicker with sound than ever before. Both in the city and in nature man produces lots of various noises that we no longer fear or notice. The noise background has become habitual and mandatory. Should it vanish, we’ll take it rather as a threat. As deadly silence in the literal sense of the word.

Silence has become unbearable for us, hence the popularity of audio players that enable us to keep carrying sound and feeding it into our ears through thin wires, although this is as strange as walking around the city with feeding tubes inside. This sound sells and has become a commercial product. There has appeared a lot of music apparently intended for people without an ear for music.

Turner Prize – winning artist Susan Philipsz with Seven Tears (2016)

Physical expression of sound – from silence to sound on canvas

This was promoted by another important technical revolution. Historically, sound had no physical expression – provided we dismiss a musical instrument in a situation where just one glance at e.g. a brass kettle-drum makes you anticipate the sound that can be extracted from it. But sound reproduction using musical instruments is a unique and transient process. Ephemerality has been an important part of musical art: a concert would be born and die on the same day. Notation would trace a route for the orchestra to follow but did not determine it once and for all. A concert retains its unique event’s function until now, but it is supplemented by the possibility to preserve music in the form of tinned sound, now available to us.

In Gargantua and Pantagruel by Rabelais, the travellers come across a field covered with frozen sounds. One of the snowballs bursts in their hands like a chestnut in the fire – it was a shot. In Rabelais’ times it was a metaphor that became a reality once Edison sang the only stanza of an English nursery rhyme into the horn of his Phonograph: ‘Mary had a little lamb, / Its fleece was white as snow; / And everywhere that Mary went, / The lamb was sure to go’ – the leaf of tin foil could hold no more. Technology would then advance from the cylinder and vinyl disk through magnetic tape to digital records – finally to let us record sound, without any freezing, and to replay it any number of times, alter and combine it. That was important for musicians and film directors, but it turned out even more important for visual artists. They had already found that the impression from a face or landscape could be taken home on a canvas or photo plate, and now they learned to record sound impressions. They proceeded from the fact that any important event in the world is marked by a sound – from a fanfare to a bomb explosion. They had had a hold on lightning before – now they also mastered thunder.

Once men learned to store sound and to replay it at will, it could be used in installations. Some sounds in our human experience are directly related to pain or fear, like a baby’s cry or air raid warning. It is clear which sound presses which key in our mind. The emotional colouring of sound is easy to use.

Sounds in modern art may be secondary: familiar, standard background sounds like those in the communicating TV sets by Nam June Pike, or primary, like in performance artists’ works. One of the best-known actions by Marina Abramović and Ulay consisted in yelling at each other until they lost their voices: ‘We made sounds as loud as physically possible… We screamed at each other, mouth to mouth… When you are screaming, unexpected sounds are born, now like baby cries, now like birds’ voices; the sound changes until all of it gets out of you…’

The black-and-white photograph AAA-AAA shows the half-length portraits of Abramovic and Ulay yelling at each other.

Many artists started using computer software that transforms sound into visual images. The computer creates a sense of an objective process, of course, but still it resembles the early experiments by symbolists (e.g. one may sing into the ear of an artist who will paint what he feels in this connection) or just the colour music of the 1970s.

But there are inverse systems, too (and just as subjective ones, we should say), where a computer analyses a pixel picture to convert pixels into sounds. The Japanese are famed for this, like Kenji Kojima who wants to turn pictures from news screens into peace music. Or Ryoichi Kurokawa who is showing the conversion of real landscapes into sound discharges and instant prints of noise wave images at the current Turbulences exhibition in Paris.

Not only have the artists learned to use sound in their installations;  they went on to depict sound. Sound consists of vibrations of air or another medium that may have nothing to do with harmony. Loud low-pitched sounds make the world vibrate, which enabled  Philippe Parreno to create his Sonic Water Lilies installation on the Fondation Beyeler pond in Basle, Switzerland. Sound generators on its bed produce ripple on the surface, resembling water lily leaves. The idea of the Water Lilies by Claude Monet followed to its logical end – now painted with sound on water instead, not with a brush on canvas. This installation indicates a new approach to sound: after trying to portray colour in sounds and to convey sound through colour, artists began to use sound merely as one of their working instruments, investigating its physical rather than emotional and pictorial properties.

Music was essential to the pattern and texture of Greek life, as it was an important feature of religious festivals , marriage and funeral rites, and banquet gatherings . Our knowledge of ancient Greek music comes from actual fragments of musical scores, literary references, and the remains of musical instruments. Although extant musical scores are rare, incomplete, and of relatively late date, abundant literary references shed light on the practice of music, its social functions, and its perceived aesthetic qualities. Likewise, inscriptions provide information about the economics and institutional organization of professional musicians, recording such things as prizes awarded and fees paid for services. The archaeological record attests to monuments erected in honor of accomplished musicians and to splendid roofed concert halls. In Athens during the second half of the fifth century B.C. , the Odeion (roofed concert hall) of Perikles was erected on the south slope of the Athenian akropolis—physical testimony to the importance of music in Athenian culture.

In addition to the physical remains of musical instruments in a number of archaeological contexts, depictions of musicians and musical events in vase painting and sculpture provide valuable information about the kinds of instruments that were preferred and how they were actually played. Although the ancient Greeks were familiar with many kinds of instruments, three in particular were favored for composition and performance: the kithara, a plucked string instrument; the lyre, also a string instrument; and the aulos, a double-reed instrument. Most Greek men trained to play an instrument competently, and to sing and perform choral dances. Instrumental music or the singing of a hymn regularly accompanied everyday activities and formal acts of worship. Shepherds piped to their flocks, oarsmen and infantry kept time to music, and women made music at home. The art of singing to one’s own stringed accompaniment was highly developed. Greek philosophers saw a relationship between music and mathematics, envisioning music as a paradigm of harmonious order reflecting the cosmos and the human soul.

Band 8 IELTS essay sample

Every society considers art and music as the core components of their culture. In my opinion, the importance of art and music has only increased in this age of technology and hence students should be urged to learn them.

We are living in increasingly stressful times. Of course, technology has made our lives easier. It has created new industries and jobs that did not exist previously. However, technology has also introduced stress into our lives. Most people now have demanding jobs that drain out their energy. Art and music enable them to relax their mind and stay tuned to the rhythm of life after a hectic day at work.

Another reason art still maintains its relevance is that it unites people. Technology is a double edged sword. It can both connect and divide people. Miscreants use technology to promote their divisive agenda. In this troubled times people need something to unite them and art does that job perfectly. It is a common interest that we all share. For example, Indian music and art have a history of thousands of years and they have played an amazing role in uniting the country and its people over the course of history. Indians everywhere are proud of their musical traditions and brilliant sculptures and carving adorning their temples, palaces and monuments. Without these elements of culture, it is not possible to unite a heterogeneous mix of over a billion people.

As for the reasons to encourage students to learn art and music, despite the fact that we are living in a technology driven world, art is still a coveted career option. Music is known to soothe human minds and is widely integrated with every modern infotainment devices. In addition, now music therapy is used to relieve people of their stress and anxiety without any side-effects. I firmly believe that art and music are crucial disciplines even today and hence parents must encourage their children to learn them in depth. Even a general learning of these subjects is known to increase students’ proficiency in other academic subjects.

In conclusion, art and music have always been appreciated throughout the world and their popularity remains intact even today. Hence, it is recommended that children learn these subjects as they make them smarter and may also lead to a prosperous career.

Band 8 essay sample 2

Art and music are considered some of the fundamental elements of all societies. Do you think art and music still have a place in today’s modern world of technology? Should children spend more time learning art and music at school?

Sample essay

Art and music occupy a special place in almost all societies. Some people argue that in this age of technology, these skills have no place and hence children should not waste their time learning them. I do not agree with this view. In my opinion, art and music still have a place in people’s lives and children should be encouraged to polish their artistic talents if they have any. Those who are not artistically talented can also pursue them for enjoyment and relaxation.

We are now living a stressful life. There is cut throat competition in almost all spheres of life and in this scenario, for most people art is the only solace they can find. That also explains the huge popularity of artists and singers. Of course, not everyone is artistically talented and as such learning art must not be compulsory for all children. However, those who have such talents must definitely polish them as those skills are rare and invaluable.

Some people might argue that learning art is worthless especially since the art sector does not generate many jobs. I do agree with this argument to a certain extent. It is true that only the super talented can pursue art as a career. The rest will definitely have to find another job to secure a source of income. This, however, does not mean that children should not learn art at all. Art provides the much needed relaxation and welcome distraction for them after they spend hours learning science or maths. Thus, it enables children to focus better on their core topics. Also, art teaches children to appreciate beauty and see life from a different perspective. These are invaluable life lessons that will enrich their lives in so many ways.

In conclusion, artistic skills are still valuable and children must be encouraged to pursue them. Of course, these are specialist skills and not everyone can become a successful artist by simply learning art at school. Hence, children who have no special talent for art must not waste too much time on it. However, they should still find a few hours for it as it rejuvenates them. As for those who are talented, well, they must consider themselves lucky and devote as much as they can perfect their skills.

Despite exciting topics and ambiguous reasoning, you will still need to write within specific rules and tell all about selecting a topic, conducting research, and organizing the work.

Choosing a Music Essay Topic

Very often, writing about music is accompanied by the need to delve as deeply as possible into the topic and learn about all the peculiarities of this kind of work. Thanks to this, you can use the maximum number of arguments and facts you are guaranteed to need. The discipline itself is pervasive in various thoughts and possible ways to write, which means you will be able to cope.

Initially, looking for an essay about music on the internet is almost useless because the rules remain standard. Even the footnotes will have to be done as in a regular research paper , but what is different is the ability to choose a suitable topic. Try to choose topics close to you, for example, more technical tools. Or, for example, more emotional and debatable abstractions and feelings.

Here are some classic options that are guaranteed to work for most students:

  • concert discussion. This type is easiest for people who enjoy such events. Try to describe as much detail as possible and use scholarly terms to describe the speakers, their instruments, and the atmosphere;
  • historical analysis of the music. The key goal of the student, in this case, is to relate a musical genre or a particular song to the historical context at the time. In-depth research must be done, and all the details must be elucidated;
  • analysis of a particular song. Such an essay allows you to determine the compatibility of the song’s lyrics with the music used. Try to be objective and resort to facts and comparisons rather than subjective opinion;
  • comparison of different works. Make comparisons of several works or even one work in different performances. A classic scholarly paper structure will help you so you don’t get confused anywhere.

When answering the question of what is a music essay, the structure within the research paper should also remain standard. That is, you will have an introduction , the central part, and the conclusion of your essay. Despite the creative topics , students have to write just like the mathematicians in their department. After all, you are doing scientific research, so you should not deviate much from the given requirements and standards.

In the following table, we will suggest topics about music that may interest you with a compelling message. This is an opportunity to choose the line of narration closest to you and allow you to solve the problem without unnecessary problems.

Each such research topic about music will allow you to go much deeper into the topic and tell the audience about one of the existing problems or solutions. At the same time, you should prepare well for your presentation and write a great essay that the readers will positively perceive. To do this, you must do in-depth research, which we will discuss further.

Conducting In-Depth Music Research

A quality music college essay will require much effort and adherence to research paper norms. You will need to choose a suitable topic and, after that, get to work to create a research paper as quickly as possible.

Here are a few steps that you will need to follow for the essay writing about music to go well:

  • Analyze the topic. To write about music essay, you will need to dig deep into the topic and all aspects of it. This will help you gather the necessary information and gain access to arguments you can later fill your research paper with. Thanks to this, your chances of interest in the reader will significantly increase, which means you can navigate more freely in your thesis statement and present it correctly. You should also not take too heavy material for the first time because it can lead to you not performing it at a decent level.
  • Formulate a competent thesis statement. Ask yourself why the audience and the world need your essay. Doing this lets you form a thesis statement that includes the main issue. Later, during the central part of the work, you will need to disclose them competently and present them to the audience. Sometimes students can write abstracts at the end when they fully understand the topic and formulate the main idea.
  • Know your audience. Be sure to work on your audience because it is to them that you will present your essay. In this regard, it’s essential, after analyzing the information in the article, to choose the main arguments and learn how to present them. Part of the audience may not be interested in the issue, so you need to get them interested and show the benefit of your acquired knowledge. Try to find common ground, and do not forget that you are the expert and, therefore, must be confident.
  • Organize the information you get. Many different data, arguments, and facts are good for scientific work. But you will always have specific limits on the number of words or sections. You must learn to cut off all the secondary and leave only the most important fragments. Divide the accumulated information into mandatory, in-depth, and generalized for immersion. Some of it can be thrown out to become more concise and believable.
  • Proceed to create your first draft. It can be hard the first time how to write a music review, but eventually, you’ll get the hang of it and get a positive result. This means you must proceed directly to the writing as quickly as possible. Even if it’s not too good work in the future, you can correct everything. Experts say working with a finished text is much easier than a blank page.

Even the most straightforward music topics for essay will require you to dive deep and acquire maximum expertise. Only in this way can you be sure that your essay will be properly perceived by the readers and highly appreciated. It is necessary not to deviate from the classic construction of a research paper and try to be as objective as possible. This will help you withstand criticism and provide counterarguments.

Do not forget also to think about your audience in the first place. You need to analyze and understand it correctly:

  • people’s interest in the problem;
  • their knowledge of the situation;
  • what kind of opinions they can hold on the issue at hand.

Thanks to this, you will be much more productive in making your theses and arguments and choosing the right wording. Do not forget that, in the first place. You need to prove your point of view is the audience. And so they must correctly understand your thoughts, not be confused by difficult terms, and fully share with you the correct position. And to do this, you need to stick to a certain style, not forget about the logical arguments, and gradually build up your thesis statement about music. Ultimately, you’ll get a positive result and be proud of your work.

Organizing Your Thoughts and Ideas for Writing Music Essay

After choosing the right research paper topics music, you need to start structuring your thoughts and organizing your research paper as efficiently as possible. By doing this, you’ll be able to properly allocate your work to all the significant steps and create a great structure to help you write. This is, in fact, the same assignment as many other research papers, and therefore the only difference will be the direct connection to music.

To make writing an essay about music, not a big problem, you need to follow a few practical steps:

  • Introduction. Remember the classic structure of any research paper when asking yourself how to write a conclusion for a music essay. This allows you to keep within the standard rules and requirements of the professor to please the audience. You can begin with an inspirational quote or reference in the first paragraph. Describe the topic of your paper, and don’t forget to put a question or add a doubt at the end. This will set the tone for the entire essay and keep it clear on the chosen topic.
  • Thesis statement . As with any research paper, you need a solid thesis statement that you will rely on throughout your writing. Don’t forget to assemble a whole argumentative paragraph that will prove your thesis statement. The statement itself should be connected to and flow from the arguments. To properly compose your thesis statement, you can first write your paper and leave this field blank. This makes it much easier to choose the right words and succinctly formulate the statement.
  • The main text. This is where your chosen topic’s main aspects will be disclosed. It is necessary to specify facts, arguments, various statements, and other fragments of the essay that will strengthen your thesis statement. It is worth a minimum of three full paragraphs that will guide your main thought on the topic. If the size of the piece allows, consider other points of view as well. This will help you finish the paper correctly later on and give some of the necessary counterarguments in advance.
  • Argumentation . Next, you must create your main paragraph with a squeeze of arguments, facts, and exact figures. This will help you include additional quotes from different composers or notes that will help readers make sense of the topic of your essay. Be sure to use the authority of various sources to solidify your position and bring your audience closer to your opinion. Using such a paragraph dramatically increases a student’s chances of getting a positive reaction from readers.
  • Conclusion . In the end, you will need to summarize all of the above and summarize. Allow your thesis statement to unfold and affirm your chosen position fully. You can also end your essay with a rhetorical question or paraphrase your thesis statement. By doing this, you’ll close the work and make it more complete for the audience. You can’t use the exact words, but you can explain the thesis statement differently.

A hand writing an essay

Remember that even a simple song analysis essay, which seems very easy to write, will be subjected to this structure. At the same time, you should also not forget the need to proofread your work. Thanks to this, you will be unable to make mistakes and get more marks during the presentation.

Among other things, argumentative essay topics on music are perfect for helping you understand different genres and styles of music. You should not treat your work as a chore because it hurts the final result. Only your in-depth understanding of the chosen issue will help you deliver the right point of view and convince the other participants in your report. It is necessary to work with the audience, and then analyzing a song essay will be a fun adventure, not complicated and tedious work.

We can also advise you to follow a few simple guidelines:

  • music essay writing will require you to have factual language. Thanks to this, the question of how to write an essay about music will disappear. That’s because it’s a research paper, just like any other. And that’s why you need to use persuasive reasoning and try to refer to verifiable facts as often as possible. Don’t forget to add authoritative sources, so the audience is fully exposed to your position. Otherwise, it will be too hard to prove a particular point of view on an issue. Don’t forget to be concise as well so that readers don’t get bored as you move through the scientific material;
  • it is better to prepare for the presentation in advance. If you also have to speak with your essay, it is worth preparing all the points and your speech in advance. Black History Month 2024: African Americans and the Arts

A woman reads a book

The national theme for Black History Month 2024 is “ African Americans and the Arts .”

Black History Month 2024 is a time to recognize and highlight the achievements of Black artists and creators, and the role they played in U.S. history and in shaping our country today.

To commemorate this year’s theme, we’ve gathered powerful quotes about learning, culture and equality from five historic Black American authors, teachers and artists who made a significant impact in the Arts, education ― and the nation.

  Making history

“Real education means to inspire people to live more abundantly, to learn to begin with life as they find it and make it better.” – Carter G. Woodson, Author, Journalist, Historian and Educator, 1875-1950

Known as the “Father of Black History,” Carter G. Woodson was primarily self-taught in most subjects. In 1912, he became the second Black person to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard.

He is the author of more than 30 books, including “T he Mis-Education of the Negro. ”

Carter G. Woodson dedicated his life to teaching Black History and incorporating the subject of Black History in schools. He co-founded what is now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, Inc. (ASALH) . In February 1926, Woodson launched the first Negro History Week , which has since been expanded into Black History Month.

Providing a platform

“I have created nothing really beautiful, really lasting, but if I can inspire one of these youngsters to develop the talent.” – Augusta Savage, Sculptor, 1892-1962

An acclaimed and influential sculptor of the Harlem Renaissance, Augusta Savage was a teacher and an activist who fought for African American rights in the Arts. She was one out of only four women, and the only Black woman, commissioned for the 1939 New York World’s Fair. She exhibited one of her most famous works, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which she named after the hymn by James Weldon Johnson, sometimes referred to as the Black National Anthem. Her sculpture is also known as “ The Harp, ” renamed by the fair’s organizers.

Raising a voice

“My mother said to me ‘My child listen, whatever you do in this world no matter how good it is you will never be able to please everybody. But what one should strive for is to do the very best humanly possible.’” – Marian Anderson, American Contralto, 1897-1993

Marian Anderson broke barriers in the opera world. In 1939, she performed at the Lincoln Memorial in front of a crowd of 75,000 after the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) denied her access to the DAR Constitution Hall because of her race. And in 1955, Marian Anderson became the first African American to perform at the Metropolitan Opera. She sang the leading role as Ulrica in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera.

Influencing the world

“The artist’s role is to challenge convention, to push boundaries, and to open new doors of perception.” – Henry Ossawa Tanner, Painter, 1859-1937

Henry Ossawa Tanner is known to be the first Black artist to gain world-wide fame and acclaim. In 1877, he enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts , where he was the only Black student. In 1891, Tanner moved to Paris to escape the racism he was confronted with in America. Here, he painted two of his most recognized works, “ The Banjo Lesson” and “ The Thankful Poor of 1894. ”

In 1923, Henry O. Tanner was awarded the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government, France’s highest honor.

Rising up

“Wisdom is higher than a fool can reach.” – Phillis Wheatley, Poet, 1753-1784

At about seven years old, Phillis Wheatley was kidnapped from her home in West Africa and sold into slavery in Boston. She started writing poetry around the age of 12 and published her first poem, “ Messrs. Hussey and Coffin ,” in Rhode Island’s Newport Mercury newspaper in 1767.

While her poetry spread in popularity ― so did the skepticism. Some did not believe an enslaved woman could have authored the poems. She defended her work to a panel of town leaders and became the first African American woman to publish a book of poetry. The panel’s attestation was included in the preface of her book.

Phillis Wheatley corresponded with many artists, writers and activists, including a well-known 1 774 letter to Reverand Samson Occom about freedom and equality.

Honoring Black History Month 2024

Art plays a powerful role in helping us learn and evolve. Not only does it introduce us to a world of diverse experiences, but it helps us form stronger connections. These are just a few of the many Black creators who shaped U.S. history ― whose expressions opened many doors and minds.

Black History Month is observed each year in February. To continue your learning, go on a journey with Dr. Jewrell Rivers, as he guides you through Black History in higher education. Read his article, “A Brief History: Black Americans in Higher Education.”

EU AI Act: first regulation on artificial intelligence

The use of artificial intelligence in the EU will be regulated by the AI Act, the world’s first comprehensive AI law. Find out how it will protect you.

A man faces a computer generated figure with programming language in the background

As part of its digital strategy , the EU wants to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure better conditions for the development and use of this innovative technology. AI can create many benefits , such as better healthcare; safer and cleaner transport; more efficient manufacturing; and cheaper and more sustainable energy.

In April 2021, the European Commission proposed the first EU regulatory framework for AI. It says that AI systems that can be used in different applications are analysed and classified according to the risk they pose to users. The different risk levels will mean more or less regulation. Once approved, these will be the world’s first rules on AI.

Learn more about what artificial intelligence is and how it is used

What Parliament wants in AI legislation

Parliament’s priority is to make sure that AI systems used in the EU are safe, transparent, traceable, non-discriminatory and environmentally friendly. AI systems should be overseen by people, rather than by automation, to prevent harmful outcomes.

Parliament also wants to establish a technology-neutral, uniform definition for AI that could be applied to future AI systems.

Learn more about Parliament’s work on AI and its vision for AI’s future

AI Act: different rules for different risk levels

The new rules establish obligations for providers and users depending on the level of risk from artificial intelligence. While many AI systems pose minimal risk, they need to be assessed.

Unacceptable risk

Unacceptable risk AI systems are systems considered a threat to people and will be banned. They include:

  • Cognitive behavioural manipulation of people or specific vulnerable groups: for example voice-activated toys that encourage dangerous behaviour in children
  • Social scoring: classifying people based on behaviour, socio-economic status or personal characteristics
  • Biometric identification and categorisation of people
  • Real-time and remote biometric identification systems, such as facial recognition

Some exceptions may be allowed for law enforcement purposes. “Real-time” remote biometric identification systems will be allowed in a limited number of serious cases, while “post” remote biometric identification systems, where identification occurs after a significant delay, will be allowed to prosecute serious crimes and only after court approval.

AI systems that negatively affect safety or fundamental rights will be considered high risk and will be divided into two categories:

1) AI systems that are used in products falling under the EU’s product safety legislation . This includes toys, aviation, cars, medical devices and lifts.

2) AI systems falling into specific areas that will have to be registered in an EU database:

  • Management and operation of critical infrastructure
  • Education and vocational training
  • Employment, worker management and access to self-employment
  • Access to and enjoyment of essential private services and public services and benefits
  • Law enforcement
  • Migration, asylum and border control management
  • Assistance in legal interpretation and application of the law.

All high-risk AI systems will be assessed before being put on the market and also throughout their lifecycle.

General purpose and generative AI

Generative AI, like ChatGPT, would have to comply with transparency requirements:

  • Disclosing that the content was generated by AI

On December 9 2023, Parliament reached a provisional agreement with the Council on the AI act . The agreed text will now have to be formally adopted by both Parliament and Council to become EU law. Before all MEPs have their say on the agreement, Parliament’s internal market and civil liberties committees will vote on it.

Rap As a Music Genre Essay

Emergence and nature of rap music, components of music, qualities of music seen in rap music, rap compared to other types of music, works cited.

Music has had different ways in which it has been defined and understood depending on factors like culture. All the same, music has universally acceptable characteristics. The most important characteristic is the fact that music involves the arrangement of sounds. This is true regardless of whether the sounds are vocal or instrumental sound. The art of arranging these sounds to come up with a nice harmonic, continuous, and unified rhythm is basically what music is all about. The differences heard in music depend on the genre of the piece of art that has been adapted. This research seeks to identify rap as a type of music and to justify why it should be categorized as so.

Rap music was born out of anger and disappointments in the early 70s when African-Americans were struggling for civic and economic inclusion (Tropeano, p. 3).

. While the other entire music genres by then held on to the old moral teachings in lyrical contents, rap was vocal in opposition and addressing the political oppression of the black community. Rappers lacked the traditional band backup and only used turntables in making their music (Kubrin, p. 7). However, the art of arranging sounds remained upheld in this genre just as in other genres of the time. Rap music though has retained the characteristic angry attitude of singers from the 70s to date. That is the nature of rap music as we know it.

Music is a composition of pitch, rhythm, timbre, harmonics, and volumes, sustains, and speeds. All these are components that a change in one of them changes the entire flow of the song. Rap music has been criticized as a style in music because it lacks rhythmic flow. On the contrary, rap music responds in obedience to all of the musical rules above (Tropeano, p. 3). All rap songs are sung in pitch which means either high or low tone. Rap music is characterized by the catchy rhythmic flow that makes the music so attractive to listeners and that is why it has gained so much popularity over the years. The human ear can not listen and approve of unorganized sound as it is registered in the mind as noise. This, therefore, proves that rap music is an organized collection of sounds from vocal sounds to instrumentals and that’s the main definition of music.

There are universally acceptable qualities that make art to be classified as a piece of music. Every piece of music has expressive qualities that make it stand out among the rest and makes it attractive to listen to. Expressive qualities include factors that do not relate to rhythm and tone rather to the performer’s expression (Kubrin, p. 5)

. Music dynamics are the softness and loudness of a song. How a song is played whether soft or loud has particular effects on it. However, the dynamics of music vary according to genre and culture. Rap music for example is played loudly while country music is soft and slow. This simply means that a song can not be classified as to whether it is musical or not by the virtual of its softness or loudness (Tropeano, p. 3).

Rap like any other genre of music falls in line with the definition of music hence should be classified as part and parcel of the term. Similar to all other forms of singing, rap lyrics are arranged in a particular beat timing hence obeying the musical beat timing theory. In addition, rhyming in rap music lyrics is of a notable high level. In music, rhyme is a quality of writing good music (Kubrin, p. 10). In all other genres, coming up with a catchy and an easy to remember chorus is of paramount importance. Rap singers and composers have been shown to have this technique at their fingertips. When listening to rap music, even without paying keen attention to the song one gets the chorus in a matter of seconds.

Today rap music has evolved to a whole new face compared to what it was in the past years especially when it was started (Kubrin, p. 1). Rap music, then, was just a few lines of a chorus and poetic verses in between the song with just a beat. Today’s rap music is characterized by the sounds of various musical instruments and highly rehearsed vocals including a professionally written chorus. The genre has drifted from simply organized beats to full-range musical production (Kubrin, p. 1). In the past, while listening to rap music, one could hardly trace a sound coming from the common musical instruments like the guitar or the keyboard. Rap music was all about a noisy beat without a rhythm but only words to fill in as a poem. That however has changed and today rap has all the rights to be classified as music in regards to the transformation it has undergone.

In my opinion rap music is justified to be classified as music as it has left up to the expectations and requirements for a piece of art to be recognized as music. The argument that rap music is more of poetry rather than music is misguided. Poets do not consider pitch and the musical beat while reciting a poem. The only similarity between poems and rap music is probably the rhyming way of composing the contents of the two pieces of art. In other aspects of rap music, it greatly agrees with the definition of music.
