We don’t need to be told that holding on to anger is bad for us — that is why Global Forgiveness Day, celebrated on July 7 each year, is so special to us. Established to increase the goodwill among people, Global Forgiveness Day asks everyone to try and set their differences aside and create a world full of healing and letting go of negativity.

History of Global Forgiveness Day

Forgiveness — aka the concept of pardoning someone after an offense, letting go of negative emotions, and releasing the hurt — has always been a key principle of every religion around the globe. The teachings from these religions highlight the nature of forgiveness and have provided a basis for the modern traditions and practices used to forgive. While philosophers also studied the concept of forgiveness, the emotion was primarily related to matters of faith.

It was only later, in the 20th century, that forgiveness caught science’s attention. Scientists, educators, and psychologists began studying forgiveness and its impact on human well-being. What they found was that forgiveness was a process. Multiple researchers developed models of forgiveness, like step-by-step approaches that would allow people to improve their ability to forgive. Later studies even attempted to understand the relationship between forgiveness and justice, particularly after particular incidents involving famous acts of forgiveness.

Japanese fighter pilot, Nobuo Fujita, had bombed the west coast of the U.S. over Oregon during WW2, which sparked great fires. The town of Brookings, Oregon, was greatly affected by this. When Fujita visited the town in 1962, he asked for forgiveness and was granted it by the townspeople. Then, in the late 20th century, Pope John Paul II publicly forgave the man who tried to assassinate him and even visited him in prison during his sentence.

The Christian Embassy of Christ’s Ambassadors (CECA) founded National Forgiveness Day in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. They hung a single banner proclaiming this day in downtown Victoria. As this day gained prominence throughout the world, it was renamed Global Forgiveness Day.

The town of Brookings, Oregon, forgives a Japanese fighter pilot who bombed them in WW2 — he offers them a 400-year sword as a symbol of his goodwill, which is still displayed in this town as a sign of their friendship.

Pope John Paul II, one of the most beloved figures of the time, survives an assassination attempt by a young radicalized man — he publicly forgives him on this day.

Research by the Gallup Organization finds that 94% of people feel like forgiveness is important, but 85% require outside help to achieve this.

CECA, the Christian Embassy of Christ’s Ambassadors, establishes National Forgiveness Day, which is later renamed Global Forgiveness Day.

The Global Day of Forgiveness, celebrated every July 7th (the National Day of Forgiveness is the last Saturday of October), was started in 1994 by the Christian Embassy of Christ’s Ambassadors as a call for  people to “stand in opposition to tyranny and injustice.” The idea is that conflict exists in the world and, rather than escalating it through confrontation and aggression, forgiveness can help alleviate the suffering. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Hate can not drive out hate; only love can do that.” No matter your religious tradition or worldview, practicing forgiveness is a powerful way to bring more peace to your life, your relationships, and the world. 

What is forgiveness ?

To forgive, as defined by Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, is to:

cease to feel resentment against (an offender) : PARDON

give up resentment of or claim to requital : forgive an insult 

grant relief from payment of : forgive a debt

Sometimes people think that to forgive means to forget. Or, that by forgiving, you’re condoning what happened to you. Rather, the purpose of forgiveness is to release yourself from the resentment that can arise from having been hurt by someone. We can never control what another person does or says; we can only be responsible for our own reactions or behaviors. Forgiveness means freedom from expecting the wrong to be righted.

How do you forgive?

First, call to mind someone who has hurt or frustrated you. The offense could be seemingly innocuous, like a careless comment, or deeply traumatic, such as abuse or neglect you’ve experienced. 

Write out all of your feelings, perhaps even imagining you’re writing to the offender. Silently acknowledge to yourself that you have been hurt. 

Imagine yourself handing back the emotional wound to the person who hurt you. This could be in the form of the letter in which you wrote down all of your painful emotions. You could also imagine saying to the person, “I forgive you.”

Release yourself from needing anything from them.

Identify the ways in which you have learned or grown through this painful process.

Lastly, be patient with yourself!

It’s okay if you still feel angry. Forgiveness does not usually happen overnight. It can be a complicated process. Here are some resources to help you on your journey of forgiveness:

Global Forgiveness Day happens every year on July 7th. It might seem like a frivolous holiday made up by greeting card companies who want the money of people who've held grudges. However, in reality, forgiveness is an extremely important action step in people's lives. Asking for and giving forgiveness allows you to not only mend relationships and ease difficult situations but also benefit your health, mental wellness , overall wellbeing, and more.

Not sure you want to celebrate Global Forgiveness Day this year? Here's why you should—since, clearly, forgiveness is so important.

Forgiveness Is Important Because It Keeps You Healthier

Global Forgiveness Day is a great chance to accept the apology of anyone who apologizes to you because people who forgive others have better physical health outcomes than those who don't forgive. One study showed that people who forgave more readily had a lower risk of heart disease than those who wouldn't forgive. Also, medical experts have shown that accepting an apology decreases stress and toxic energy that courses through one's body. If you don't reduce this toxicity, you can experience a weakened immune system and are more likely to get physical illnesses like viruses.

Ultimately, holding onto negative feelings and bitterness about someone or something they did can create stress and stress hormones in your body. Stress hormones can do significant damage and cause a slew of stress-related illnesses. It can even cause things like hair loss and insomnia, which can have a major physical impact.

Forgiveness Is Important Because It Keeps Mental Illness at Bay

When you're asked to forgive somebody but withhold forgiveness, it has a significant negative impact on your mental health. Studies show if you hold onto grudges for too long, you're at risk for many mental health symptoms , like anxiety, depression, low mood , and panic. Over five weeks, giving more forgiveness reduced people's perceived stress and, in turn, stress-related mental illness, including mood disorders, acute stress disorder , and more. Giving less resulted in increased stress and more mental health issues.

Forgiveness Is Important, so Here's How to Do It on Global Forgiveness Day

If you're convinced that forgiveness will keep your physical and mental wellness right where you want them to be, it's time to conquer forgiveness on Global Forgiveness Day. If you're not sure how to ask for forgiveness, here are some important steps to get you started.

• Apologize for the thing you did. Don't apologize by avoiding an apology. Own up to what you did, speak it clearly, and say sorry. Instead of focusing on someone's reaction, simply apologizing ensures the wronged person knows you understand what you did and have remorse.

• Explain your understanding of how they were affected. To show you truly understand why you need to apologize, explain the effect you had on the person you're apologizing to. When you establish an understanding of their experience, they'll realize the apology isn't empty—that they've really "got" your ask.

• Don't ask for anything in return. You should apologize merely to apologize, no matter the response you get. You may love to hear you're forgiven, but that's not the right perspective to have when beginning your apology process. Instead, look at only what you can offer and how you can heal. Don't seek anything from anyone else. Just follow through and hold to your apology. It may take time for the person to come around, or maybe they won't. But at least you'll have expressed your sincere regret and how sorry you feel, and that in itself is healing.

• Accept people's apologies. Even if it feels difficult, try to accept apologies on this Global Forgiveness Day. Not only will you be doing your own body and stress hormones a favor and letting your body relax a little, but you'll also be helping to improve the health of the person apologizing to you.

Global Forgiveness day for Seniors

Examples of excluding behaviors are easy to find. Many families speak of ‘a black sheep,’ of one who seems misplaced in the family unit.  Whole groups of people are victims of stereotyping and denied the full benefits of societal living. The list is endless, stretching from the extremely personal to impersonal.  It occurs on every level of life. This hurtful behavior makes relating to the ‘other’ difficult, if not impossible.  

For any meaningful relationship or dialogue to occur, forgiveness is needed.Inevitably the first step in mending a relationship happens when one or both parties share and seek forgiveness for the hurt their behavior has caused. Older adults need to seek and to offer forgiveness. Often lumped into a category called “old,” along with suppositions learned from cultural conditioning, they feel unnecessary. Older adults may be seen as less capable than younger people, despite evidence to the contrary and feel devalued. They are often dismissed as irrelevant because of their age. The feeling of being undervalued can cause strain on interpersonal relationships. An open dialog between older adults and their family members and friends can go a long way toward mending relationships. Older adults heal and grow best when they acknowledge how they have been hurt and how they may have hurt others.   

As we look at the brokenness of our world wondering how we got where we are and how we might make things better, a simple suggestion is made; begin by looking at ourselves; give up judging others before taking a look in the mirror. Things change when we change; when we see our own limitations and need to seek and to offer forgiveness. Forgiveness is important to our sense of wellbeing, no matter what our age. Take an opportunity today to reflect and begin to mend relationships with those you care about.

On Forgiveness Day

On September 2, 2020, the Forgiveness Day was celebrated. It falls on the last day of Paryushana , a ten-day festival observed by the Jains worldwide to introspect their own conduct with others. On the Kshama – vani Diwas (Forgiveness Day, usually falling in the month of August or September on the fifth day of Bhadrapada according to the Hindu calendar) they utter the words Micchhami Dukkkadam to each other which implies: Please forgive my bad deeds done knowingly or unknowingly. This is unique to Jainism. Even the Muslims have Ramazan, a whole month for fasting and self-purification but there is no provision for seeking forgiveness or granting forgiveness for its own sake. It is different from the Christian tradition of saying that ‘to err is human, to forgive divine’. It is based on the principle of self-purification and spiritual evolution. It makes the person let go of any ill-feeling, grudges and bitterness against anyone by moving forward.

Seeking forgiveness or forgiving others is to be seen as an act of great courage. It is usual to feel offended, hurt or traumatized by our near and dear ones or unknown persons in our day-to-day lives. Similarly, we too might hurt, offend or illtreat others consciously or unconsciously. The annual ritual of seeking forgiveness provides a wonderful opportunity of cleansing our souls. Since everybody else is also doing the same, we do not feel hesitant, ashamed or reluctant of seeking it. Rather we feel proud. It inculcates the feelings of understanding, empathy and compassion. It provides an opportunity for dialogue even with those with whom we might have had strained relations in the past for one reason or another. They could be our friends, colleagues, neighbours, family or casual acquaintances on social media. It helps in lessening anxiety, stress and hostility, on the one hand, and promotion of physical, mental and spiritual health, on the other.  

Under Jainism, the seeker of forgiveness looks at it as being ‘doubly blessed’. The person who forgives feels lighter in heart and higher in terms of self-esteem and the one who is forgiven also feels a sense of relief and gratitude. S/he can see the things from a wider perspective. S/he knows that every soul is noble inherently. If someone commits a mistake, it is because of ignorance, circumstances or one’s own karmas (deeds in this world or earlier births). If we make it a way of life to forgive people not occasionally but on consistent basis by treating each life as the inherent part of the cosmos, we can live a peaceful life together and the world would become a happier place for co-existence based upon genuine freedom. Forgiveness under Jainism is not seen as an act of cowardice but as an act of great valour. It is said:

Kshama virasay bhushanam   

When translated into English, it implies:                                     

Forbearance is the ornament of the brave.

Contribution to mental health

Forgiveness is seen as one of the virtues, such as humility, purity of thought, self-restraint, austerity, contentment, etc.  Seeking forgiveness helps in getting rid of all the negative or toxic emotions, such as, anger, pride, greed, deceit, too much ego, etc. Forgiving others also helps in leading harmonious lives at the individual, familial and social levels. On the Forgiveness Day, the Jains traditionally approach their friends, colleagues, neighbours, relatives, enemies or adversaries and even casually known persons with utter humility  and seek forgiveness formally in the following words:

KhamemiSavveJiva, SavveJivaKhamantuMi Mitti Me Savvabhuesu, Verammajjhamna Kenai

When translated into English, it implies:

I forgive all the living beings of the universe, and may all the living beings forgive me.

I have friendship with everyone and animosity with none.

Such a gesture is the need of the hour. We are living in a world that is bereft with so much violence, self-centeredness, lack of concern for fellow human-beings, hate, anger, apathy, loneliness, alienation, etc. Nobody can deny that in today’s world, our psychological and physiological well-being is constantly under threat. This threat can come not only from militarism and terrorism, but also from environmental pollution, growing violence, religious fundamentalism, rising consumerism and pandemics like Covid-19. There are problems faced by the society as a whole.

 Not only the poor and marginalized sections of society, but the rich and affluent are also afflicted by growing human distress owing to weakening of social fabric, growing violence, maddening competition and lack of true knowledge and guidance. It requires serious efforts towards imbibing those traditional and moral values which go beyond the state and the market and provide a path for the humane and holistic development of all human beings across the world.

The Jain principle of forgiveness aims not only the individual’s physical, mental and spiritual well-being but also the sustainable socio-economic development at the societal level and peaceful co-existence at the global level. Forgiveness under Jainism is unconditional, spontaneous and emphatic and not ‘self-oriented’.  Though it is difficult in practice but those who believe in virtuous life and follow the cardinal principles of Jainism – (1)  ahimsa  (non-violence), (2)  anekantvaad  (relative pluralism) and (3)  aparigreh  (non-possessiveness), can very well understand the significance and practical utility of forgiveness. They can easily practice it once they know that everybody has an equal right to live in this inter-connected world governed by our own karmas and not by God or some supernatural power.

Each individual can seek enlightenment and liberation by overcoming one’s karmas by following the path of ratnatraya (Three Jewels). It is based on samayak darshan (sound insight), samayak jhan (sound knowledge) and samayak charitra (sound character). These help in understanding the multifaced aspects of reality, cultivate objectivity and equanimity. This process of self-purification provides an individual the capacity to forgive. It leads to higher spiritual growth and improved inter-personal, inter-group and inter-national relations. It enhances one’s self-control and promotes a non-violent world order.

It reminds us the classical example of forgiveness by Mahatma Gandhi who was assassinated   by Nathu Ram Godse on January 30, 1948.  He was not given death sentence as Gandhi was opposed to capital punishment. No wonder, Gandhi is seen as an apostle of non-violence. He followed Jainism in thought and deed. His birthday is celebrated as Non-violence Day. Even Jesus Christ is said to have forgiven his crucifiers for not knowing what they were doing.

In view of eternal relevance of the principle of forgiveness, we should fix a day to seek forgiveness at the international level every year. It would help in highlighting the need for psychological, physiological and spiritual well-being of one and all.  Taking responsibility for our deeds, even bad ones, makes us powerful. It helps in stopping our grudges, self-justifications and counter-attacks.

Your children are going to have arguments. They are going to fight, and someone's feelings are going to be hurt. Their favorite toy may break in the hands of another child or they may not feel included. When these experiences occur, it is important your children learn to forgive others. But teaching forgiveness can be difficult. July 7 is Global Forgiveness Day. On this day, teach your children the importance of forgiveness and how to forgive. Below are 4 suggestions for teaching your children forgiveness.

1. Communicate and teach

Forgiveness can be a hard concept for children to learn. Our emotions often get the best of us and cause us to do things that we aren't proud of. We need to teach our children to calm down when they are upset and learn to forgive. But first, you must teach them what forgiveness is and how to forgive.

Often, the best time to teach children about forgiveness is when they need to forgive. If someone has done something to them, pull them aside, sit them down and talk about it. Use the current situation to explain how forgiveness works and why it is so important. Look for these types of teaching situations each day. You will be surprised how frequently you will find them, especially if your children have other siblings and fight often.

2. Make them say it

Teach your children to always say "I am sorry."� Teach them the true meaning of these words and the importance of being genuine when you say it. Even if the situation is small, make them say these three words. If they learn to apologize over the small things, they will ask for forgiveness over the big things, as well.

3. Be an example

The only way your children will truly learn how to forgive is by following your example. Your example is the best teacher, and your children are watching you. Show your children how to forgive. Let them know when someone has wronged you and what you did to forgive them. If you are not genuine and sincere when you forgive others, your children will pick up on those feelings. Teaching your child true forgiveness is a large responsibility and it falls upon you and your spouse.

4. Be patient

You can't teach your children true forgiveness overnight. It will take a significant amount of time and several instances where forgiveness is required. Don't become too overwhelmed and frustrated when your child doesn't grasp the concept of true forgiveness. If you are diligent and teach them at every opportunity, you will eventually see progress.

Remember, forgiving others can be hard. It will be hard for your children to grasp the true meaning of this concept. But if you teach them, show them and help them understand what it means to truly forgive another individual, you will see results. Global Forgiveness Day is the perfect starting point to help your children understand how to truly forgive. Perhaps, help you remember the importance of forgiveness, as well.

I come to you today with an idea. Ideas can lift up or tear down. They can be conduits for good or for great evil. Having studied the idea of forgiveness for the past 33 years, I am convinced that to date, the world has missed one of its greatest opportunities: to understand, nurture, and bring forth the idea of forgiveness within the human heart, within families, schools, workplaces, houses of worship, communities, nations, and between nations.

It is not an opportunity missed in that it now has passed us by. Instead, it is an eternal idea, one that will transcend your and my lifetime and live on long after we are gone. Yet, its time is now and this is why I come to you with this idea that can change the world.

This is not an idea based on idealism or wishful thinking. The idea has been forged over three decades of putting forgiveness to the test through randomized experimental and control group trials with: a) elderly struggling with injustices (Hebl & Enright, 1993), b) parentally-love deprived university students (Al-Mabuk, Enright & Cardis, 1995), c) incest survivors (Freedman & Enright, 1996), d) men hurt by the abortion decision of a partner (Coyle & Enright, 1997), e) people in residential drug rehabilitation who had been self-medicating to dull the pains of injustice against them (Lin, Mack, Enright, Krahn, & Baskin, 2004), f) emotionally-abused women (Reed & Enright, 2007), g) 6 and 8 year old students in Belfast, Northern Ireland (Enright, Knutson, Holter, Baskin, & Knutson, 2007), h) academically and emotionally at-risk middle school students (Gambaro, Enright, Baskin, & Klatt (2008), i) first, third, and fifth grade students from a segregated urban area of the United States (Holter, Magnuson, Knutson, Knutson, & Enright, 2008), j) cardiac patients suffering from past resentments which were affecting the amount of blood flow through their arteries to the heart (Waltman, Russell, Coyle, Enright, Holter, & Swoboda, 2009), k) elderly women in hospice who were dying of cancer and needed closure on family rifts (Hansen, Enright, Baskin, & Klatt, 2009), l) parents in Northern Ireland who served as forgiveness teachers for their own children (Magnuson, Enright, Fulmer, & Magnuson, 2009), m) adult children of alcoholics who needed to forgive a parent for excessive alcohol consumption (Osterndorf, Enright, Holter, & Klatt, 2011), n) Taiwanese youth whose insecure attachment to the mother was interfering with their well-being (Wei, Enright, & Klatt, 2013), o) emotionally-challenged youth in Korea, some of whom were incarcerated (Park, Enright, Essex, Zahn-Waxler, & Klatt, 2013), p) women with fibromyalgia who had been abused as children (Lee & Enright, 2014), q) employees in the workplace who suffered injustices from co-workers (Zhao, Enright, & Klatt, 2017), r) an individual who lost a family member to suicide and forgave as a way to overcome the mourning (Lee, Enright, & Kim, 2015; Lee, Kim, & Enright, 2017), s) and abused early adolescents in Pakistan (Raman, Iftikhar, Kim, & Enright, in press). In so many cases, people who chose to forgive improved statistically-significantly in their psychological health. Those who seemed to be devastated by the injustices against them were able to reclaim their lives. This list represents only the peer-reviewed and published studies within our own research lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. There are many researchers now across the world engaged in empirically-based interventions on the psychology of forgiveness.

Given the scientifically-supported findings across a wide array of hurting people across the globe, it is now obvious to me that forgiveness is an answer to the darkness, the injustice, the evil that can suddenly cascade down upon a person, overwhelming, devastating the inner world of that person who is caught off guard by the unfair treatment. When this happens, resentment can burst forth in the human heart, grow there, and become the unwanted guest that sours outlooks and relationships. Resentments destroy; forgiveness builds up.

I have seen too often where resentments take hold, take advantage, and dictate future patterns between people and among groups. It becomes the self-righteous blueprint to stand against one’s former compatriots, to fight them, to ignore them, to belittle them because the effects of the injustice—resentments—call for this. A life’s pattern of defending one’s turf, speaking against the other, fighting against the windmill of bad feelings and distorted perceptions of “the other” grow from injustices long gone. The injustices may have packed their bags, but the effects march ever forward in time to haunt, to disrupt, to destroy.

Forgiveness is the strongest response against the ravages of resentment that I have ever seen. Forgiveness as an insight that all people have worth can stop the march of the madness, the cruelty, the acrimony dead in their tracks. Forgiveness as a free choice to offer goodness when others refuse to offer it back can shine a light in the darkness and destroy evil. Yes, forgiveness can destroy evil because the light of forgiveness is stronger than any darkness and while some scoff and laugh at that, those who have the courage to try tell me that forgiveness is the over-comer, the defeater of a life being lived with bitterness and revenge -seeking.

It is time that this idea, an idea that can destroy evil, becomes more visible. It is time for us to take seriously the warning that resentment can kill, not only us but also our children and our children’s children as the resentment refuses to die. Look at the history of some of our war-torn lands in which people groups refuse to yield. The prejudices, the hatred are willingly and obediently absorbed by the children who obediently act on these and then pass them on to the next generation.

It is time to shed light on an idea. It is time to focus our minds, hearts, and wills on the idea that forgiveness must be better understood by all who will listen, be better practiced and continually practiced, and then passed on to others as a gift to them. It is time to bring forgiveness into the light of humanity for a more mature humanity, one that understands the destruction of evil and even more so understands the cure for this darkness in the human heart.

This is 33 years of thinking about an idea now talking to you. Some refuse the idea. Some ridicule it. Some try to disparage the messengers. Yet, as with resentment, which refuses to die, I find that forgiveness, too, refuses to yield. Will you follow the norms of your community that have ignored forgiveness, or will you start a new trend? Forgiveness is an answer to injustice. Forgiveness is a cure for the potentially devastating effects of injustice. Forgiveness holds out the hope of living with joy. It is time. How will you now contribute to this new idea that can change the world?

Forgiveness is a topic of interest and study in both science and faith traditions

Global study shows that when forgiveness is taught, practiced and achieved, it promotes better mental health and well-being and offers a groundbreaking forgiveness workbook in 6 different languages..

Many faith traditions place a strong emphasis on forgiveness as a central component of their teachings and practices. For example, forgiveness is a central tenet in many religious texts, such as the Bible, the Quran, and the Buddhist sutras. In these traditions, forgiveness is seen as a way to promote healing, reconciliation, and spiritual growth.

There is also evidence to suggest that faith can play a role in promoting forgiveness . For example, studies have found that individuals who have strong religious beliefs and practices are more likely to forgive others, even in difficult and challenging situations.

From a scientific perspective, research has shown that forgiveness is associated with a range of psychological, social, and physical benefits, including improved mental health, reduced stress, improved relationships, and better physical health outcomes.

Studies have even shown that forgiveness has a positive impact on academics, lower blood pressure, better sleep and less anxiety. According to Andrew Serazin, president of the Templeton World Charity Foundation , says research they have funded validates the science behind forgiveness, “It helps the people who are doing the forgiving. It helps inside your own skin.”

In some cases, science and faith perspectives on forgiveness may overlap and reinforce each other. For example, both science and faith traditions emphasize the importance of empathy, compassion, and understanding in the forgiveness process.

A recent global study into forgiveness, funded by Templeton, focused on the emotional benefit of the process of forgiving, focusing on what they call the REACH method of forgiveness in 6 different languages. Dr. Everett Worthingon, lead researcher, developed this model to understand the links between mental, physical, and spiritual benefits of forgiveness.

Reflections: Forgiving In Difficult Situations

October 2015.

In July 1963, near the end of his life, C.S. Lewis wrote a letter to a lady in Washington, DC who was in a situation where, as Lewis put, she faced “as difficult a job in the forgiving line as can well be imagined.” As part of his letter, Lewis recounted a very personal story about his own efforts at forgiving someone who had done him great wrong:

Do you know, only a few weeks ago I realised suddenly that I at last had forgiven the cruel schoolmaster who so darkened my childhood. I’d been trying to do it for years: and like you, each time I thought I’d done it, I found, after a week or so it all had to be attempted over again. But this time I feel sure it is the real thing. And (like learning to swim or to ride a bicycle) the moment it does happen it seems so easy and you wonder why on earth you didn’t do it years ago. So the parable of the unjust judge comes true, and what has been vainly asked for years can suddenly be granted. I also get a quite new feeling about ‘If you forgive you will be forgiven.’ I don’t believe it is, as it sounds, a bargain. The forgiving and the being forgiven are really the [very] same thing. But one is safe as long as one keeps on trying. 1

Lewis well understood the importance, indeed the necessity of forgiving others. In his essay “On Forgiveness,” written in 1947, 2  Lewis had stated:

We believe that God forgives us our sins; but also that He will not do so unless we forgive other people their sins against us. There is no doubt about the second part of this statement. It is in the Lord’s Prayer; was emphatically stated by our Lord. If you don’t forgive you will not be forgiven. No part of His teaching is clearer, and there are no exceptions to it. 3

Even when we understand the importance of forgiving others, it can sometimes be very hard, and especially in difficult situations, may require repeated efforts and much prayer. As Lewis recounted in his letter, it literally took him years before he succeeded in forgiving his cruel schoolmaster. Is there anyone you need to forgive, perhaps in a situation where forgiveness is very hard? In such a situation, it may be helpful to remember Lewis’s example and his advice to keep on trying. It may also be helpful to seek prayer and counsel from a godly pastor or elder.

Topic: Why is forgiveness important

Throughout your life, you will have to forgive people. Often times, forgiveness can be difficult. A wise man once declared, “Holding a grudge does not make you strong; it makes you bitter. Forgiving does not make you weak; it sets you free.” Forgiving others allow you to overcome your anger, to heal spiritual wounds, and to be set free.

First, forgiving others allows you to overcome your anger. If you hold a situation against someone, you begin to also hold a grudge. This is also known as bitterness. Bitterness builds up over time and eventually, you become a negative form of yourself. Anger is not something you should hold in. It’s proven that anger is more than just an emotion, it has physiological effects on you.

Secondly, forgiving allows you to heal spiritual wounds. Matthew 6:14-15 “ For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” Once you forgive others, our Father in Heaven will forgive you. Healing spiritual wounds will allow you to grow closer to Jesus and your family in Christ. With spiritual wounds, you will never be fully whole.

Last, forgiving simply sets you free. Forgiving others will allow weight to come off your shoulders. When you do not forgive, a bad feeling exists inside of you. It makes you feel hatred. One element of life is loving everyone, you cannot do this until you forgive. You have to be a blessing. With bitterness in your thoughts and mind, you cannot do this.

Overall, you will have to forgive people every day. Everyone makes mistakes. You should forgive people as fast as you would want them to forgive you. Forgiving gives you the chance to overcome your anger, to heal your spiritual wounds, and to set you free. Forgiveness is the key to life.

Explain why it is important to forgive

It is very important to forgive others. Forgiveness means to forget someone’s bad deed or mistake. Life becomes easier when you learn to accept an apology you never received. You react to someone else’s mistake can be vital to your life and the lives of the others around you. Avoiding forgiveness can leave frustration in your heart and destroy your personality. You must learn to forgive others and yourself. It is very important to forgive.

First of all, it is important to react in the right way to someone else’s mistake. When you act in a response to an act or mistake, it could cause damage to good and bad sides. Fighting or taking revenge will only make a situation worse and it also means that you would commit a bad deed as well. If you do not fight or take revenge, but choose to forgive, you are at a higher place than the other person. By acting mature and not fighting or taking revenge, you will not damage your self-respect. Also, there will be peace between you and the other person because you both acted in a mature way. It is important to react in the right way to someone else’s mistake.

Secondly, it is important to forgive because avoiding forgiveness causes frustration in your heart and destroys your personality. If you forgive someone, you will feel better about yourself. Your heart and your mind will become more relaxed because you have peace in knowing that you do not have to be angry with anyone. In history, war broke out because countries could not forgive each other. If you simply learn to forgive, your mind and heart will be at peace instead of at war. Forgiveness is very important.

Lastly, forgiveness is important to you and the people around you. If you do not find forgiveness in yourself, others can become victims of your ego and revenge. If you are too prideful to forgive someone, you need to change your mindset. If someone does you wrong, you must treat everyone in a kind way because it is not their fault. If you don’t forgive yourself, you can’t forgive others. Forgiveness is very important to you and the people around you.

In conclusion, it is very important to forgive others. It is important to react in the right way to someone else’s mistake. It is important to never avoid forgiveness. Also, the way you react to forgiveness will affect you and the people around you. It is very important to forgive others.
