जे के रोलिंग का असली नाम Joanne Rowling है। उनकी किताब छपने वाले पब्लिशर्स को लगा कि टीनऐज लड़के शायद किसी फ़ीमेल राइटर की बुक पढ़ना पसंद न करें, इसलिए किताब में उनका पूरा नाम न लिखकर कुछ शॉर्ट नाम लिखा जाए। 

जोएन को अपनी दादी कैथलीन से बहुत लगाव था इसलिए उन्होंने दादी का नाम अपने नाम के साथ जोड़कर Joanne Kathleen Rowling कर लिया, जिसका शॉर्ट J.K. Rowling होता है। 

– जब वो 17 वर्ष की थीं तो उनका सपना था कि वे Oxford University से पढाई करें लेकिन उन्हें Admission नहीं मिल पाया.

– जब वो 25 वर्ष की हुईं तो उनकी माँ की मृत्यु हो गयी.

– जब जे के रोलिंग 26 वर्ष की थीं तो उनका Miscarriage (गर्भपात) हो गया था.

Harry Potter अपने Uncle Vernon और Aunt Petunia के साथ अपनी गर्मी की छुट्टियां बिता रहा था। वे उसके साथ अच्छा व्यवहार नहीं करते थे। वह चाहता था कि जल्दी से जल्दी छुट्टियां खत्म हों और वह वापस Hogwarts जा सके।

एक दिन Uncle Vernon अपने Boss और उनकी wife को अपने घर dinner पर बुलाते हैं।

वे Harry से कहते हैं कि कोई भी हरकत मत करना और चुपचाप अपने कमरे में पड़े रहना।

लेकिन जब Harry अपने कमरे में जाता है तो देखता है कि Dobby नाम का एक house – elf वहाँ आया होता है। वह Lucius Malfoy (Draco के पिता ) का गुलाम था। लेकिन Harry को बहुत पसंद करता था।

वह Harry से गुजारिश करता है कि इस साल पढ़ाई करने Hogwarts ना जाए। उसे वहाँ बहुत खतरा है।

लेकिन Harry कहता है कि वह ऐसा नहीं कर सकता। उसका Hogwarts जाकर पढ़ाई करना बहुत जरुरी है।

उसे रोके के इरादे से Dobby किचन में जाता है और Petunia के बनाये cake को हवा में उड़ाने लगता है। वह cake को बॉस की wife के सिर के ऊपर ले जाता है।

Harry उसे रोकने की कोशिश करता है लेकिन तभी Dobby, Cake को उस महिला के सिर पर पटक देता है। और गायब हो जाता है।

Uncle Vernon गुस्से से आगबबूला हो जाते हैं। वे Harry से कहते हैं कि अब तुम दुबारा जादू सीखने Hogwarts नहीं जाओगे। फिर वे उसके कमरे की खिड़की को सील कर देते हैं। और Harry को उसके कमरे में बंद कर देते हैं।

लेकिन किस्मत से Harry का दोस्त Ron अपने भाइयों के साथ एक उड़ने वाली कार में वहाँ आते हैं। और वे Harry को कार में उड़ाकर अपने घर ले जाते हैं।

इसके बाद Harry खुशी-खुशी Weasley परिवार के साथ छुट्टियाँ बिताने लगता है।

** धीरे-धीरे छुट्टियाँ खत्म होने लगती हैं। और स्कूल जाने का वक्त आ जाता है।

Harry, Weasley परिवार के साथ स्कूल की चीजों की shopping करने Diagon Alley जाता है।

लेकिन वहाँ उसे Lockhart नाम का एक narcissist टीचर मिलता है। जो बहुत सज -धज कर रहता था। और बड़ी -बड़ी फेंक कर शेखी बघारता रहता था।

Publicity पाने के लिए वह कुछ भी कर सकता था। जब उसने Harry को देखा तो उसे लगा कि उसके साथ फोटो खिंचवाकर वह और भी ज्यादा famous हो जायेगा। लेकिन Harry के साथ जबरदस्ती फोटो खिंचवाकर उसने ऐसे show किया जैसे वह उस पर कोई एहसान कर रहा हो।

Harry किसी तरह उस से पीछा छुड़ाकर वहाँ से निकलता है।

इसके बाद उन सबको Draco Malfoy का धूर्त किस्म का पिता Lucius Malfoy मिलता है। वह Weasley परिवार की गरीबी का मजाक उड़ाने लगता है। लेकिन Harry उसकी बात का माकूल जवाब देकर उसे चुप करवा देता है।

इसी के साथ बच्चों का Hogwarts जाने का समय हो जाता है।

लेकिन जब Harry और Ron प्लेटफार्म 9 by 3/4 में pillar के जरिये प्रवेश करने लगते हैं, तो देखते हैं कि किसी ने प्लेटफार्म को जादू से block कर दिया था।

यह काम भी Dobby ने ही किया था। क्यूँकि वह Harry को इस बार Hogwarts नहीं जाने देना चाहता था। क्यूँकि उसे लगता था कि वहाँ कोई Harry को मारने वाला है।

इससे Harry और Ron की train छूट जाती है। लेकिन वे दोनों Ron के पिता की उड़ने वाली कार से Hogwarts के लिए रवाना हो जाते हैं। लेकिन Ron कार को ठीक से Hogwarts में उतार नहीं पाता है। और वे Forbidden Forest में एक बहुत ही खूंखार पेड़ के ऊपर लैंड करते हैं।

वे किसी तरह से बचकर स्कूल पहुँचते हैं। लेकिन उन्हें इस गलती के लिए detention दिया जाता है। Ron की माँ भी उसे डाँटने वाला जादू का खत भेजती है।

** एक दिन Quidditch की प्रैक्टिस शुरू हो जाती है। इस बार Draco अपने house Slytherin का seeker बन चुका था। क्युँकि उसके पिता ने पूरी टीम को branded झाड़ू donate किए थे।

इसी बीच Draco Hermione की बेइज्जती करता है और उसे Mudblood कह देता है। जो एक गाली के समान था। Ron गुस्से में Draco से उलझ जाता है और उस पर एक spell करता है।

लेकिन उसकी टूटी हुई छड़ी के कारण spell उसी पर पलटवार कर देता है। और उसके मुंह से snails निकलने लगते हैं।

** एक दिन detention के दौरान Harry को विचित्र आवाज सुनायी देती है। लेकिन और किसी को भी वह आवाज सुनायी नहीं देती।

Halloween की रात एक बहुत ही भयानक घटना घटती है। किसी ने स्कूल के caretaker की बिल्ली को निर्जीव (petrified ) सा कर दिया था।

और दीवार पर एक चेतावनी भरा संदेश लिखा हुआ था – Secrets वाला chamber खुल चुका है। वारिस के दुश्मनो – सावधान।

Harry, Ron और Hermione जाकर प्रोफेसर McGonagall से Chamber of secrets के बारे में पूछते हैं। वे बताती हैं कि एक अफवाह के अनुसार सालों पहले Slytherin हाउस के founder ने castle में कहीं पर एक तहखाना बनाया था। और वहाँ एक दैत्य को रखा था। उस दैत्य को Slytherin का वारिस ही control कर सकता था।

फिर वे कहती हैं कि शायद यह एक काल्पनिक कहानी ही है क्युँकि आज तक Hogwarts में ऐसा कोई Chamber नहीं मिला है।

** Gryffindor के लिए खेलते हुए Harry अपने हाउस को Quidditch में एक और जीत दिला देता है। लेकिन game के दौरान एक जादुई गेंद उसके हाथ पर लगती है और उसके हाथ की सारी हड्डियां ही गायब हो जाती हैं। इसके बाद उसे हॉस्पिटल ले जाया जाता है जहाँ वह ठीक हो जाता है । यह काम फिर से Dobby ने किया था।उसे लगा था कि ऐसा करने से Harry को फिर से उसके घर भेज दिया जाएगा। जहाँ वह सुरक्षित रहेगा।

उसी रात Harry ने देखा कि एक और student निर्जीव कर दी गई थी। और उसे हॉस्पिटल में भर्ती किया गया था।

** एक दिन और Lockhart students के बीच जादू की लड़ाई का आयोजन करवाता है। इसी दौरान Draco जादू से Harry पर सॉंप गिराता है। लेकिन Harry सॉंप से बात करता है और सॉंप उसे कुछ नहीं करता।

इससे सब को पता चलता है कि Harry सांपों से बात कर सकता था। कुछ लोग शक करने लगते हैं कि कहीं Harry ही तो वारिस नहीं है।

इसके बाद एक दो और students निर्जीव हुए मिलते हैं। किसी को भी पता नहीं चल पा रहा था कि आखिर students ऐसे बेहोश क्यों हो रहे हैं।

Harry, Ron और Hermione जल्द से जल्द असली गुनहगार को पकड़ना चाहते थे। उन्हें Draco पर शक था। क्योंकि वह Slytherin हाउस का ही था।

वे भेष बदलने के लिए polyjuice नाम का एक काढ़ा बनाते हैं। और इससे वे Draco के दोस्तों का रूप धारण कर लेते हैं। लेकिन जब वे उससे बातचीत करते हैं तो पाते हैं कि वह Slytherin का वारिस नहीं हो सकता।

और वह students को बेहोश नहीं कर रहा था।

** Valentine Day से पहले Harry को लड़कियों के पुराने washroom में एक डायरी मिलती है। यह डायरी Moaning Myrtle नाम की एक मृत लड़की की थी। जो अब भूत बनकर इस washroom में भटकती थी।

Harry यह डायरी ले लेता है। जब वह इस डायरी में कुछ लिखता है तो डायरी भी उसका answer लिखती है।

Diary के जरिए हुई Harry को काफी कुछ पता चलता है। वह Tom Riddle नाम के एक लड़के से भी बात करता है। जो सालों पहले Hogwarts में ही पड़ता था।

वह Harry को बताता है कि सालों पहले Hagrid ने chamber of secrets को खोला था। जिससे एक दैत्याकार जीव बाहर आ गया था और Moaning Myrtle को मार डाला था ।

Hagrid ने ही उस जीव को वहाँ पाला हुआ था। लेकिन Harry को इस पर विश्वास नहीं हो रहा था।

** इसी बीच एक दिन Hermione भी बेहोश पाई जाती है। और उसे हॉस्पिटल में भर्ती कर दिया जाता है।

Harry और Ron अब Hagrid से पूछने जाते हैं कि क्या उसने कभी Chamber of secrets खोला था। लेकिन इससे पहले Magic Minister Fudge और Lucius Malfoy मिलकर Dumbledore को हेडमास्टर के पद से हटा देते हैं।

यह कहकर कि वे Hogwarts को सुरक्षित नहीं रख सके। और parents शिकायत कर रहे थे।

इसके बाद उन्होंने Hagrid को भी पकड़ लिया था और जादूगरों की जेल Azkaban ले जाने लगे।लेकिन जाते हुए Hagrid कहता है कि Spiders का पीछा करो।

एक दिन बाद Harry और Ron spiders का पीछा करते-करते Forbidden Forest चले जाते हैं। वहाँ उन्हें Aragog नामका एक बहुत ही विशालकाय spider मिलता है।

दरअसल उसे Hagrid ने castle में छुपाकर पाला था। कुछ लोगों को लगा था कि शायद वही Chamber वाला दैत्य है। लेकिन Aragog इससे इंकार करता है और कहता है कि उसने Moaning Myrtle को नहीं मारा है।

वापस लौटते हुए बहुत से भूखे spiders उन पर हमला करते हैं। और वे मुश्किल से जान बचाकर अपनी कार से भाग जाते हैं। जो अचानक से ही वहाँ प्रकट हो गयी थी।

Chamber of Secrets में रहने वाला monster एक Basilisk (दैत्याकार सॉंप ) था।

अगर कोई उसकी आंखों में देख ले तो उसकी मृत्यु हो जाती है। लेकिन सभी students ने उस जीव को या तो फर्श पर गिरे पानी में या शीशे में देखा था। जिससे उनकी मृत्यु तो नहीं हुई थी लेकिन बेहोश हो गए थे।

लेकिन सालों पहले शायद Moaning Myrtle ने उसकी आखों में देखा था। जिससे उसकी मृत्यु हो गयी थी।

साथ ही वह सॉंप sewage की बड़ी -बड़ी pipes में घूम रहा था। और कभी -कभी उसी की आवाज Harry को सुनायी देती थी। क्युँकि सिर्फ वही साँपों की आवाज सुन और बोल सकता था।

तभी अचानक McGonagall आकर Harry और Ron को बताती हैं कि कोई Ginny को Chamber of secrets में ले गया है। और किसी को भी वहाँ जाने का रास्ता नहीं पता।

Harry लड़कियों के washroom से होकर, Ron और Lockhart के साथ Chamber of secrets की तरफ जाता है। लेकिन Lockhart सिर्फ एक fraud था। उसकी गलतिओं के कारण एक गुफा गिर जाती है और Harry उनसे अलग हो जाता है।

वह अकेला ही Chamber of secrets की तरफ चला जाता है।

वहाँ पहुँचकर वह देखता है कि Ginny का बेहोश शरीर जमीन पर पड़ा हुआ था। और Tom Riddle उसके पास खड़ा था।

वह बताता है कि उसी ने Ginny को डायरी के जरिये अपने वश में कर लिया था। और उसी ने Harry को Hagrid के बारे में गलत जानकारी दी थी।

वह यह भी बताता है कि वही युवा Voldemort है। और Slytherin का असली वारिस भी वही है। इसके बाद Tom Riddle सॉंप को बुला लेता है जो हमला करने के लिए Harry के पीछे भागता है।

Harry उसकी आंखों में नहीं देख सकता था। इसलिए वह कुछ देर tunnels में इधर -उधर भागता है। तभी Harry को Dumbledore का नियम याद आता है – जो Help मांगेगा उसे help मिलेगी।

Harry मदद माँगता है। तभी Dumbledore का Phoenix पक्षी sorting hat लेकर वहाँ आता है। Phoenix अपनी चोंच से सॉंप की दोनों आखें फोड़ देता है। अब Harry आसानी से उसका मुकाबला कर सकता है।

वह sorting hat से तलवार निकालता है और कुछ देर की लड़ाई के बाद सॉंप को मार देता है। लेकिन सॉंप का एक दांत उसे लग जाता है। तभी Phoenix अपने आंसू उसके जख्मों पर गिराता है। जिससे वह ठीक हो जाता है।

इसके बाद Harry, Basilisk के दाँत को Diary में घोंप देता है जिससे Tom Riddle नष्ट हो जाता है। इसके साथ ही Ginny को होश आ जाता है।

अब तक जितने भी students बेहोश हुए थे उन सबको होश आ जाता है। इसके बाद Harry, Dumbledore के पास जाता है। जो फिर से headmaster बनकर लौट आये थे। और उन्हें हर घटना की जानकारी देता है।

Lucius Malfoy हेडमास्टर को हटाने का order लेकर वहाँ आता है। लेकिन जब उसे सारी बातें पता चलती है तो कुछ नहीं कर पाता।

तभी Harry चालाकी से Lucius के हाथों Dobby को एक जुराब पकड़वा देता है। जिससे वह Lucius की गुलामी से आजाद हो जाता है।

Lucius गुस्से से पैर पटकता हुआ वहाँ से चला जाता है। Hogwarts में अब सब कुछ पहले की तरह सुरक्षित हो चुका था।

इसके साथ ही students गर्मी की छुट्टियाँ बिताने अपने – अपने घरों के लिए रवाना हो जाते हैं।

‘ Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone ‘ is a very engaging read for children and adults alike. Since it is the first book in this series, we are introduced to an entirely new world in this book. The world of magic slowly builds itself as we read through the book. The genius of this book is using the protagonist Harry’s discovery of this world to parallel the readers’.

Furthermore, despite several hardships and literally being an orphan who never knew love, Harry still recognizes love and affection when he sees it. While this book is memorable for a plethora of reasons, some elements of Rowling’s writing triumph as winners.

Discovering the Story World and Magic as a Metaphor

J. K. Rowling does a great job writing this story with an omniscient third-person narrative but still keeping the narrator wherever Harry is for a major part of this book. This makes the reader’s fascination and interest in the world of magic as new and real as Harry’s. We are introduced to several facts and significant peculiarities of the world of magic, all of which seem very consistently developed, adding authenticity to it. 

While there are a lot of similarities between the real world and the world of magic, the differences are usually peculiar and downright funny at times. Platform nine and three-quarters, running through a brick wall, ghosts roaming freely and talking to living people, and many other peculiarities add to the charm of creating an interesting story world. One could go on to theorize that calling non-magic people muggles and portraying the Dursleys as ordinary people who hate things like magic has a metaphorical purpose. 

It furthers the cause and appeals to the readers to be more imaginative and creative. Magic is a metaphor for imagination in this case. The Dursleys are scared of anything out of the ordinary. They spend their entire day doing mundane tasks they assign meaning to and criticize almost anything and anyone that doesn’t fit their design.

On the contrary, Harry, despite being ill-treated and not loved by the Dursleys, has a flair for imagination and creativity. It didn’t take very long for him to get used to the wizarding ways, and he very clearly had the potential to do great things after all. This book is, in its essence, an inspiration for readers to make dreams come true and bravely follow their dreams despite obstacles. It is an apt narrative for children who, at their age, tend to discover new things and ideas to develop. 

Good vs Evil and Heroism

The trope of a savior standing up to the tyrant is not new. However, ‘ Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone ‘ being a children’s book, delves into this slowly. When Harry is unaware of magic and thinks that his parents died in an accident, he is a normal child with very little to think about good, evil, and the need for heroism.

However, once he is informed of the actual circumstances of his parents’ death and after discovering magic, he gains new insights, and his worldview significantly changes. His sense of responsibility and the need to stop Voldemort at any cost from getting to the Philosopher’s Stone set the path for his heroism. This transition happens slowly, yet it feels very natural. He doesn’t know what he will do if he faces Voldemort. Despite this naive understanding of the consequences, he still chooses to face Voldemort. 

This portrayal of heroism is quite commendable as it appeals to the very cause of wanting to stop the wrongdoing. The fact that an eleven-year-old boy and his two friends thwart a feared dark wizard from stealing the Philosopher’s Stone in a school that has so many adults who are way more experienced and well-equipped to do it portrays heroism in its purest form. Heroism is more the choice to take action against evil than the ability to stop evil. This book does a good job illustrating this subtlety.

Sacrifice in Harry Potter

Sacrifice is an essential part of this novel. The story of ‘ Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone ‘ uses sacrifice to define both friendship and love. Harry’s parents die because they sacrifice themselves to protect Harry. Ron sacrifices himself while playing Wizard chess. Several people who fought in the war against Voldemort sacrificed themselves for the well-being of the collective community. 

The trope of sacrifice plays a major role in setting up differences in morality between the good and the evil. As Dumbledore points out to Harry, Voldemort does not understand love. The fact that Harry understands love and values it, sets a specific difference in the choices that Harry and Lord Voldemort make.

Harry is willing to sacrifice himself when he takes over the task of protecting the Philosopher’s Stone. On the contrary, Voldemort uses others for his selfish motives. This stark difference between willing to sacrifice oneself and using others as a shield to protect oneself makes all the difference and definitively separates good and evil in this book.

Why was Harry Potter banned?

Harry Potter was banned in a catholic school in Nashville, Tennessee, because of fear of evil spirits. Some other places have also banned Harry Potter books for similar religious fears. Some religious leaders were concerned that the spells and enchantments mentioned in the book were real and that they could summon evil spirits and dark magic.

Is  Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone  worth reading for an adult?

‘ Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone ‘ is definitely worth reading for an adult. While it was written as a children’s book, it has outlived this label, and there are people of all ages who not only read these books but also engage in community discussions and have fun playing games inspired by these books. Many people have found reading this book a very rewarding experience, as is evident from the sales and fame this book has garnered across all demographics.

Should I read  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone  or watch the movie? 

While the movie is undoubtedly well-made and a thrill to watch, the books are far more detailed and a very thrilling read. Most people who have both read the books and watched the movies always choose the former as a better experience. Furthermore, there are several interesting and amusing characters and scenes in the book that the movie couldn’t incorporate. So, one would be missing out on a lot if one doesn’t read ‘ Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. ‘

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J K Rowling is a thrilling read that hooks the reader from page one. Published in the year 1997, it is one of the highest grossing novels ever written. Some elements of the novel like its elaborate yet accessible world-building makes it a very entertaining read for children and adults alike. It follows the story of an orphan boy named Harry Potter who realizes he is a wizard and the rest of the book records his journey as a young wizard in Hogwarts, a school of magic. This book, and the series as a whole have been a definitive part of an entire generation’s childhood and have garnered very high praise as an entertaining read.

• The plot is entertaining and is a very immersive read.
• Has a lot of early lessons for children on morality.
• The characters are well developed and the story world is well structured and interesting.
• The writing style may be a bit rudimentary for adult avid readers.
• Several instances of Deux Ex Machina make the protagonist’s position very safe and lacking any real danger.

But the movies in Hindi dubbing were a completely different experience, and allowed us to relive our childhood favourite in a new light, and with great comic elements. Here are the words and phrases we still can’t get over.

1. Moaning Myrtle as Mayoos Meena

Moaning Myrtle is undeniably one of the most annoying characters in the series (barring Umbridge, there’s a special place for her in hell), but Mayoos Meena was peak dramatic and hilarious. Well played on the alliteration too.

2. Voldemort as Anisht Dev

To be fair, it’s a translation for the ‘Dark Lord’ but calling him Dev makes him sound like a cool demigod, when in reality Voldy was a noob who couldn’t kill a baby properly.

3. The names of the four houses

“Garuda Dwaar, Naagshakti, Cheelghaat, Mehnatkash” Everyone’s a gangster till the ‘ bolti topi’ (sorting hat) sends you to Naagshakti.

4. Cornish Pixies as Nanhe Pishaach

Remember when Gilderoy Lockhart released these pixies in his class of Gupt Kalao Se Raksha and all hell broke loose. Those were the times!

5. Praanbhakshi and Dumpishaach

Anisht Dev and his team of Praanbhakshis (death eaters) being curved by Snape was the plot twist none of us saw coming.

Dumpishaach was the name for Dementors.

6. Expelliarmus, or ‘ Nirastra Bhava’ as the cool kids say

Almost sounds like an old uncle is giving you blessings, ‘Nirastra Bhava!’ . Except, it’s really Neville Longbottom trying to cast a spell and failing (yet again).

7. Platform No. 9 ¾

This one is so obvious, yet so weird to hear. It could have simply been ‘ paune das ’ all this while. But no, we need to say “nine and three-quarters” the entire time.

8. Rahasyamayi Tehkhana or Chamber of Secrets

The one that got an entire movie to its name, and had a Kaal Drishti living inside the whole time.

9. Whomping Willow as Ladaku Ped

Where’s the lie, though?

10. When the Deathly Hallows were Maut Ke Tohfe

Not sure if Harry thought of it as a gift, though. But we’ll take it.
