Karachi is known as “The Bride of the Cities” and the “City of Lights”, due to its lively nightlife and thriving cultural scene. Expatriates living Karachi will be able to enjoy the city’s historical riches and its modern restaurants, bars, and clubs.

The most important historical sites in Karachi are the hundred-year old tombs located in the Chowkandi graveyard, as well as many buildings from the Raj era, including the Karachi Port Trust and Sindh High Court. Karachi has many beautiful beaches and parks, and is home to a Pakistani National Park; Kirthar National Park, which also has its own lake.

The city is also home to some of Pakistan’s most important cultural and artistic institutions and events, such as The National Academy of Performing Arts, the National Museum of Pakistan, and Kara Film Festival.

Education in Karachi

As Karachi has historically been home to many foreigners and expatriates, there are a large number of international schools located in the city. These schools will teach classes in English, and will usually follow an English, American, or international curriculum, and will therefore be suitable for the children of expatriates living in Karachi.

The most notable international schools in Karachi include the British Overseas School, Karachi American School, St Paul’s English High School, and the Beaconhouse School System, amongst many others. Karachi is home to Pakistan’s largest university, the University of Karachi, which has one of the largest student bodies and faculties in the world.

There are also a number of private universities in the city, which are mainly focused on computer technology, software development, and economics, including the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences and the Karachi Institute of Economics & Technology.

Transportation in Karachi

Foreigners and expatriates living in Karachi will be able to drive legally using a foreign driving license or an international driving permit for up to six months; after this time they must take the examination to obtain a Pakistani driving license.

As the largest and most densely populated urban area in Pakistan, traffic and congestion is common on Karachi’s roads, especially during rush hour and in the city center. As such, pollution levels are higher than many other places in Pakistan. However, steps are being taken to address the congestion, and a new series of flyovers and bypasses are being constructed on the busiest roads.

The public transportation network in Karachi is extensive, and is comprised of a both a circular railway network and a rapid transit bus system that runs all day every day. Many people also make use of the numerous taxis and rickshaws that fill the streets, as these are an inexpensive way to travel.

Karachi is also most notoriously known as the “City of Lights,” Karachi is a bustling metropolis with a population of over 21 million people. The city households people of every ethnicity, religion, and race. This includes Balochies, Urdu speakers, Punjabis, etc.

Important in Pakistan’s Economy

Karachi plays a vital role in the economy of Pakistan, with a thriving port and a large industrial base. Karachi holds almost 200% of Pakistan’s GDP. Karachi partakes in 35% of the total earned revenue of Pakistan in the fiscal year of July 2021 to jun2022. The city is home to Pakistan’s stock exchange. Karachi also generates about 25% of the industrial output.

Rich culture

Karachi has a rich history and culture. Karachi has been habited for millennia now but with a different name. Karachi was previously known as ‘Kalachi’. Karachi has many historical landmarks and monuments. The most famous of these is the Mohatta Palace, a beautiful building that was built in the 1920s in the Art Deco style. The palace is now a museum and is open to the public. Another famous landmark is the Quaid-e-Azam’s mausoleum, which is dedicated to the founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Karachi is also home to many beautiful beaches, such as Clifton Beach, which is one of the most popular spots for locals and tourists alike. Karachi was also called Paris of the east because of the beautiful outposts it holds. Because of the vast diverse population of Karachi consisting of almost every ethnicity including Bengalis, Karachi is home to some of the most famous Pakistani dishes and cuisines. Karachi is also notorious for its street vendors.

The Problems

But of course, all that glitters is not gold. Karachi faces a lot of problems practically the highest in the whole country. This includes a lack of infrastructure and inadequate public transportation. Karachi is also the biggest hub of crime rates in Pakistan. This includes robbery, mobile snatching, kidnapping, etc.

The city is also suffering from some major issues such as pollution, water scarcity, and poor waste management. This makes life in Karachi extremely hard and unhealthy and even dangerous.

Karachi also serves as the graveyard for some of the worst times in Pakistan’s history. This includes bomb blasts, hijacking of airplanes, and other major terrorist attacks.

Countermeasures

The government of Pakistan has taken steps to address these issues and to improve the city’s infrastructure. New projects have been launched, such as the construction of a new airport and the expansion of the city’s metro system. The government of Pakistan has been trying constantly to install countermeasures to combat these issues but the unstable government and the changing of policies of the government of Pakistan have badly hurt the city of Karachi.

Six major issues of Karachi

The 20 million people of Karachi, the biggest and the most diverse city of Pakistan, have been facing various problems for a long time. Crime, water scarcity, and power shortages are some of the major issues and the whole city seems to be trapped under the detrimental impacts of such life-threatening problems. Not only have these issues engulfed Pakistan’s economic hub, but they have also pulled the helpless people of Karachi into a quandary.

Through this newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of the central government and PTI’s strong opposition in Sindh, towards the six major issues of Karachi that need to be dealt with on a priority basis.

First, the city has suffered a lot with regards to a severe water crisis. However, if it is not managed, it could lead to violence in Karachi’s worst-hit areas. Thus, the issue demands immediate attention from the ruling government.

Second, the deteriorating public transport in the most populous city of Pakistan has also added fuel to the fire. The metro and green bus projects are still yet to be completed. As a result, traffic jams have gotten even worse. People would not have faced this issue had there been a good and decent public transport system.

Third, illegal settlements and land grabbing must be eradicated from Karachi. Land mafias with political support continue to be a threat. The authorities concerned should root such mafias out from the soil of the city of light.

Fourth, at the university level, the education standard of Karachi has suffered due to lack of resources and inefficiency of the Higher Education Commission (HEC). Providing adequate funds and proper attention to the HEC can be a viable solution to promote the standard of education in this megacity.

Fifth, Karachi, despite generating 60 percent of the federal revenue, hardly gets 10 percent of the federal resources. The joint efforts of federal and provincial government can take Karachi out of crime, power shortages, and unemployment. In this regard, Pakistan’s biggest and largest city needs federal resources that are more than 10 percent.

Finally, pollution, poor urban planning and the absence of an adequate garbage and waste disposal system have turned Karachi into the world’s filthiest city. The authorities concerned must strengthen the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) to address these issues. The government must also launch a public awareness campaign about pollution.

To sum it up, the issues are very serious. The people have suffered a lot from such deadly problems. However, with proper will and determination, the PTI led government can address these issues. Karachi, the city of light, can become an international trade and finance center once more.

City life has many problems- traffic problems, water problems; housing problems, electric problems, etc. Karachi is the heart of Pakistan. It is the biggest city in our country. There are so many problems, but traffic is the most important problem for the Karachites. The government is doing its best to solve this problem, but it is becoming complicated every day. Karachi is an industrial city. Its population is about 70 lacs and it is increasing day by day. Mostly the people of Karachi are businessmen or factory workers. They go to their places of work in the morning and return in the evening. Some people also work in government offices and private firms. Most of the offices are centered at M.A.Jinnah Road and Saddar area. The flow of traffic in one direction often jams the traffic. Slow-moving carriages like victoria, donkey carts, and camel carts also aggravate the problem. The poor class travels by buses and local trains. The buses of Karachi are always overloaded. Although there are hundreds of buses in Karachi, they are not sufficient. The result is that many people travel daily hanging on the foot-board and so there are daily accidents. The middle class travels by rickshaws and taxis, but they are also not enough for the people. In the morning and evening times, it is very difficult to get a rickshaw or taxi. They often charge double fares, and even then we cannot get a rickshaw or taxi easily.

My Story Was Told in ‘Hotel Rwanda.’ Here’s What I Want the World to Know Now.

This week, the world will again turn its eyes toward Rwanda. April 6 marks 30 years since the start of one of the most horrific events in modern history, the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Nearer in time but not unrelated, it has been just over one year since I left Rwanda and returned to the United States, released from prison after 939 days in captivity .

I have not yet spoken at length about what those years in a Rwandan prison were like, or about the daily reality for Rwandan political prisoners who, like me, found themselves behind bars for exercising their freedom of expression. It has been a long year of physical and emotional recovery that has allowed me finally to put pen to paper again, and I expect the healing process will last the rest of my life.

The experience of being kidnapped, tortured, imprisoned and silenced by those whom I had used my voice to criticize is difficult to describe. At many times during my captivity I believed I would be silenced for good, and that I would never again see my wife, my children and my grandchildren. But today I am a free man. And as we face this important and difficult milestone, I feel grateful to be able to join with my fellow Rwandans and reflect on what, if anything, we can take from this terrible chapter of our shared history.

For me and for so many Rwandans, the 1994 genocide remains the focal point of my life. The months of April to July 1994 were a time of incomprehensible horror, in which our beautiful country was dragged into hell by brutal violence and killings on a scale previously unimaginable. At some points in the crisis, as many as 10,000 people were butchered in a day, primarily by machetes and other crude weapons. Even now, three decades later, and even for those of us who saw the killings firsthand, it is impossible to process the depravity and the gravity of the loss.

At the time, I was the manager of the Hôtel des Mille Collines in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, where I tried to protect not only my own young family but also the 1,268 people who sought shelter within the walls of the hotel. Their bravery, and our daily macabre dance with death, became the backdrop of the 2004 film “Hotel Rwanda.” This film brought to the screen our compromising, negotiating and begging with our would-be executioners to try to keep the waiting militia at bay.

This experience is still difficult for each one of us to relive. I am grateful to have survived it. I am also grateful for the two personal lessons I decided to take from living through this atrocity. The first: Never, ever, ever give up. This is what sustained me when I was kidnapped in August 2020 by an operative of the Rwandan intelligence services and wrongfully detained in Rwanda on charges of terrorism and other crimes, along with others who were critical of the current government. The second: Words are our most effective weapons when we are confronted by those who seek to oppress and victimize others.

Both of these lessons are on my mind today, as the world considers the state of Rwanda 30 years after the genocide brought us to our knees.

Now Rwanda is viewed by many nations as an important global partner — a partner that has bravely rebuilt itself into a thriving and inclusive modern society. But it is increasingly difficult to remain blind to the jailing — and even the disappearances and killings — of those who criticize or challenge the Rwandan government’s power. Independent journalists, human rights advocates and opposition political parties are nearly absent from the landscape of Rwandan civil society today. This is not a reconciled or inclusive society; it is an authoritarian state.

The rest of the world should stop looking the other way. As a global community, we are being confronted with the rise of authoritarianism and the co-opting of institutions meant to support basic liberties, such as the freedom of press, speech and association. Throughout the world, politics is being used as a tool to promote division, and in some cases violence, in order to gain or maintain power. We continue to see the fundamental human rights that we fought so hard for being upheld only for certain people in certain circumstances. And, as is so often the case, the vulnerable members of society are the ones who pay the greatest price. Rwanda, which today lacks strong democratic institutions and free and fair elections, is not immune to these problems.

I believe that it becomes the role of those of us who have been empowered by our circumstances to speak out, to act as a check on abuses of power and to resist the erosion of our fundamental rights. It is imperative to speak against those who seek to reduce civic space and basic freedoms for their own political gain, choose to fuel violence for profit and openly engage in brutal wars for material wealth. This becomes our work, even if speaking out puts us in the direct line of fire, as it has for me and my family.

Thirty years on from the Rwandan genocide, there is still cause for hope. We can see young Rwandans all over the world continuing to advocate genuine reconciliation and the building of a democratic Rwanda, despite the overt risks of doing so. We can see the bravery and unfailing resolve of the women of Iran and Afghanistan and those who support them. We can see the open resistance of people in Myanmar, Ukraine, Syria and Sudan standing up to tyranny and oppression. Their courage reminds us that it is our collective duty to counter autocratic regimes and policies and promote equality and, above all, peace.

This is my prayer, and hope, for the next 30 years, for Rwanda and beyond.

Man in karachi sentenced to 14 years in prison for acid attack on wife.

KARACHI: A sessions court sentenced a man who threw acid on his wife to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment.

Additional district and Sessions Judge (East) Muhammad Ilyas Memon of the gender-based court, convicted Kausar Abbas for throwing acid on his wife Saima, who had suffered 31 per cent burn injuries on her body.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs1 million and directed that the amount be given to the complainant in compensation, otherwise, the convict would undergo an additional six-month imprisonment on default.

“The accused being addicted led to his wife’s relocation to her parental house and his subsequent suspicion of her extramarital affair (as evident from the charge sheet), is the apparent root cause of his aggression, which steered him to commit this offence,” the court observed.

According to state prosecutor Kubra Syed, complainant Saima stated in her statement recorded at the hospital that her husband was addicted to narcotics and would often ask her for money to buy drugs.

Due to his behaviour, she left their home and stayed with her brother. On March 19, 2021, her husband came to the house and demanded more money to buy narcotics. However, when the complainant refused, he threatened her and threw a bottle of acid on her, causing her burn injuries.

A neighbour took her to hospital upon hearing her cries.

On the other hand, the defence argued that the complainant had falsely accused their client, with the support of her mother, brother, and the police.

However, the court noted that the FIR was registered as the police approached her in a hospital following the incident, and she accused her husband, adding that therefore, there was no time for her to consult with police and falsely implicate her husband.

The court observed that the victim presented her evidence naturally and remained consistent during cross-examination, adding that the court found her testimony to be trustworthy and reliable.

Regarding the victim’s clothing, which was not secured by the police as evidence, the court noted that this suggests fault on the part of the investigating officer, who failed to secure the clothing. This cannot be attributed to the victim or anyone else, as they are not legal experts.
