Essays About Your Mom: Top 5 Examples and 5 Prompts

Some of the most important memories in our lives involve our mothers. If you need to write essays about your mom, our guide will help.

A mother is a female parent of a child. Mothers nurture their children throughout childhood and, for many, throughout adulthood as well. The desire to support and protect our children is never ending for many mothers.

Motherhood, however, is not always a genetic role. Many people foster or adopt children or find themselves acting in a parental role for someone else’s children. What matters is the effort you put into a motherly role; for most, the instincts are all there.

It can safely be said that a mom is one of the most significant role models one can have in life and one whose influence continues to inspire. I once read a statement that said, ‘one day, you will realize your Mom is the best friend you will ever have.’ That is certainly true for me, and I hope for many of you.

If you are writing essays about your mom, our essay examples should prove inspiring.

5 Writing Prompts On Essays About Your Mom

1. the best memory of your mom, 2. a lesson your mom taught you, 3. what is your mom’s best quality, 4. your mom as a role model, 5. who is your mom.

“My mother believes in me, in everything I do, and is always positive about it. Every decision, task, and every level that I concur, my mom is always there, believing in me that I will succeed. Graduating 5th grade and moving up to 6th grade was a big step, just like graduating 8th grade and moving up to 9th grade was. But my mother believed that I would still do well in school and would enjoy it a lot.”

Mckenzie writes about his mother as his greatest influence and inspiration. He reflects on how his mom always makes sure he is well and how she loves the family unconditionally. He also describes her selflessness, as she volunteers for those in need and raises money for charity. Her mother’s love, selflessness, and encouragement inspire Mckenzie to try his best in everything he does, and he is genuinely grateful for her.

“All I can say is thank you for being an amazing mother and all I want for you is to keep doing what makes you happy and brightens your day. Keep creating and going to the beach just to look at the ocean. Keep running, even if it’s not in marathons and don’t forget how awesome of a mother you are. Keep collecting seashells and spreading your positive energy everywhere you go. I love you, Mom.”

Wolf’s essay is addressed to her own mother and is composed of different notes and letters. According to Wolf, her mother is hardworking, optimistic, and devoted, and she recalls several moments they shared. The moments she describes are heartfelt and profound experiences that many can relate to.

“To this day, she wakes up every morning, marches into our living room, and talks with cancer patients on the phone, lending them her empathy and expertise. It’s amazing, and I wanted her to know I saw all that. I wanted her to know I knew she’s always been a badass. I wanted her to know she’s an inspiration to me, a dynamic, courageous, capable, remarkable person I admire and study every day.”

Moore discusses his mother’s life beyond her role in his life. He briefly tells her life story, then writes about her work for a colon cancer foundation. She spends most of her time consoling and caring for cancer patients; only now is Moore able to appreciate what she is doing. He is in awe at all that his mom has been able to accomplish besides being a great mother to him.

“She utilizes her wisdom by teaching me the ways of life. She rejoices as I apply her teachings in my life and she understands me. The abundance of knowledge my mother has supplied me with continuously fills my life with rare and beautiful treasures.”

In her essay, Gonzales reflects on the spiritual lessons her mom has instilled in her. Her mother is a role model of a strong, Christian woman devoted to her family and God. She is always there for her daughter, giving her advice on how to handle difficult situations. Gonzales aspires to be just like her mother in everything she does, especially when raising her own children.

 5. Your Mom Doesn’t Hate You, She’s Just Trying to Help You by Carly Newberg

“I’m not a parent (yet). However, I hope that when I am, I can take what I’ve learned from the obstacles I’ve faced with my mom, to keep the generational progress moving forward. After all, that is one of the beautiful gifts we’re given on Earth; To learn from the mistakes of our loved ones, map out our route accordingly, do our best to get where we are going, and accept the detours along the way knowing those after us will use them to love harder and live wiser.”

In this essay, Newberg discusses a phenomenon we are all too familiar with: mothers arguing with us. She explains that despite their seemingly curtailing actions, mothers always want what is best for us and are even struggling with whether their decisions are correct. Newberg suggests that we should be understanding of our mothers and use these experiences as lessons for how to parent in the future.

Essays About Your Mom: The best memory of your mom

For your essay, reflect on an experience with your mom that you treasure. Perhaps it is a birthday celebration, a trip out of town, or simply a conversation you had. Describe the events that transpired, how they made you feel, and why you treasure them as you do. Also, consider if your perception of this event has changed. Perhaps it has taught you more than you first thought.

One of a mother’s primary roles is to teach her children essential skills and lessons to prepare them for the future. Think about one or more things your mom taught you, whether life skills, values, or otherwise. You can be as general or in-depth as you want regarding what you’ve learned from your mom, but be sure to explain it adequately.

For an interesting essay topic, write about a quality of your mom’s that you seek to emulate- her patience, kindness, or fortitude. Discuss why you have chosen it, how it is essential to who your mom is, and how you hope to use it in the future.

Essays About Your Mom: Your mom as a role model

Mothers are role models to everyone, not only their kids but also to others they interact with daily. In your essay, you can reflect on a time your mom did something truly admirable that cemented her position as your role model. As with the other essays, describe the events, what you learned, and why you chose this. You may also comment on how it has shaped you as a prospective or active parent. Discuss any aspects of parenthood you would like to emulate and those you would not!

This essay topic may seem simple, but one can learn much about a person from a simple biography and reflection. Give readers a general idea of what your mom does, her role in your life, and how she has made you who you are today; paint a picture of this fantastic woman and why she is so important. You can include something about her background and note how it has influenced her, making her the mom she is. Also, you may consider whether any of her inherited traits have been passed to you.

An Introduction to the Essay

The word Mother is a very pious word and whosoever is called by the name ‘Mother’ is a person who sacrifices and prioritizes her children over anything. Her whole Life revolves around the well-being of her child, their growth, their development, and their welfare. A Mother not just only gives birth to a child but she takes a Lifelong commitment to take care of her child.

The only unconditional love in the world is the mother's love. My mother is my inspiration, my superhero, my best friend, and my guiding light. My life would not have been beautiful without my mother. Through ups and downs and in every step of life, she holds my hand and supports and encourages me. No matter what happens, my mother is always there beside me- cheering me up and motivating me. All mothers in the world are great and so, we should not celebrate their contribution in our life on Mother's Day only, which is 10th May, but every day of the year and throughout their life. It is because no gesture of appreciation is ever enough when it comes to acknowledging our mother. Her selfless love and sacrifice are the precious of all gifts under the sun.

An Essay on Mothers

My Mother- The Multi-Tasker

Mothers play an important role in everyone’s Life since she acts as a Protector, a Friend, and Guide for Life. A Mother does everything selflessly for her child and without any condition. There the love of a Mother is known to be Unconditional.

The way she manages my family with utter dedication and devotion is inspiring. The relationship with my mother is something very hard to explain. I do not merely love her because she is my mother and we should respect our elders. I love her because she is my world and when I was not able to speak and communicate she took care of me, time and time again. The best part about my mother is that even though I have grown older she knows and understands my needs without me speaking a word. I learned kindness and love from her. She taught me no matter how bad a situation might get, only love can improve it in the most effective way. She has been the rock-solid pillar of my life and in every big moment of my life.

My Mother has constantly supported me throughout my entire Life, whenever I am in a danger or in a situation where I am stuck, she has always been there for me, protected me, and guided me. She has been my favorite teacher who has taught me about Life and the beauty of it. She is the essence of truthfulness, sincerity, and lots of love. The only person who holds our family together is my Mother. She cares for everyone in the house and for the ones in need outside the house as well. One of the most beautiful things that I learned from my mother is empathy. Be it strangers or animals, she treats everyone equally which makes her more amazing. Moreover, she taught me to not hurt anyone on purpose and help people whenever possible. Not only this but also she taught me to not differentiate among rich or poor, beautiful or ugly. She says that it is the heart of a person that makes them beautiful and rich and not temporary possessions.

My Mother is my constant source of encouragement, be it in Life or in school for studies. She has always inspired me to do other activities along with my studies. She has taught me to enjoy every aspect of Life and live Life to the fullest. She wants me to do those things in Life as well which she could not do or pursue. She is my backbone for everything. My mother has inspired me through her hard work and sacrifices. She taught me once never to get disheartened by failure and to keep challenging the failure with our honest effort. And one day, failure will pave the path to our success. The strength of facing hurdles and overcoming it is what I have learned from her.

Mothers have never-ending qualities even though they do not get much credit for their goodness and hard work. She binds everyone in the family and plays a very important part in everyone’s Life. Even when I do something wrong in Life, she scolds me but at the same time, she makes me understand and helps me to get out of the situation. She forgives me after every mistake but ensures that I’ve realized my mistake first. She is the most selfless human being I have ever encountered in my life till now.

My mother knows me in and out. Even if I am lying she catches me immediately and I start feeling guilty. We should never lie to our parents and especially, to our mother. They simply do not deserve it. Mothers spend a significant part of their lives making us capable of standing on our own feet. Sometimes, they have to sacrifice their own career and happiness for that. So a mother's trust should never be destroyed. And when it comes to my mother, I would not change a bit about her. She is the best chef, reading partner, and an independent working woman who can balance almost everything with utmost perfection. Even her imperfection makes me proud of her. Without my mother, I would never become a better human being. My Mother is my biggest strength and makes me, even more, stronger when I go through all my ups and downs in life. The best thing she possesses is her patience. The patience she has is difficult for anyone to have. She deals with every situation in the family, in my life, or even in her Life with so much patience because of the reason the family is bonded so strongly. It is the responsibility of every child to appreciate their Mothers and give them the love and respect that Mothers deserve.

essay on my mother story

Got a bit lost by trying to find out how to write an essay “the person I admire is my mother”?

Let’s start off with an obvious setting. Your mom is the most important person in your life but writing a good descriptive paper, where you explain what kind of person she is and why she is special, may be more than challenging.

Although you have to talk about your personal experience and feelings, you should also appeal to your audience’s senses and evoke emotions.

That is not easy.

We are about to provide you with all the necessary information, that would help you create an interesting, thought-provoking essay on mother, impress your teacher and classmates, and get a high grade.

What is a descriptive essay?

Let’s start with a simple definition.

Descriptive essay is a piece of writing where you describe something in a highly detailed manner, using sensory information and colourful words.

It can be an object, place, thing, experience, situation, or a person. It’s an artistic writing form, often poetic in nature. The purpose of this type of writing is to reveal the meaning of a subject, using sensory observation.

Actually, you have to create a detailed picture for readers with specific vivid words and evoke a strong sense of familiarity and appreciation. Your task is to describe something in a way the audience could see, hear or feel whatever you are talking about.

You can do it, utilizing illustrative language and including a lot of sensory details. It’s not enough to provide readers with several random facts; you should express your own feelings and appeal to your audience’s senses and emotions.

There are certain useful techniques you should follow if you plan to achieve these goals. But before we start discussing how to write a descriptive essay about a person, let’s talk about specific features of descriptive writing when it comes to creating an impressive paper on mother.

Specifics of essay on mother

In a strong paper on mother, you actually need to describe a person you love and it’s important to ensure that this description is sensory-based.

You should utilize the most specific concepts to help readers see your mother and understand what feelings she invokes in you.

You should show rather than tell readers what your mom is like and what kind of person she is.

Remember: when you just tell something, your words can be interpreted in a variety of ways, as words are vague. But when showing the picture via describing specific details, you create a vivid, real picture.

What are the qualities of a good mother essay? Let’s see.

  • The text is clear and concise;
  • It presents colourful images and appeals to the readers’ imagination;
  • The key to a perfect descriptive essay about my mother is painting a picture in your readers’ mind by engaging all five senses – sight, smell, sound, taste, and touch.

How to write a descriptive essay about a person?

How To Write A Descriptive Essay

Descriptive writing has a unique power and appeal. Its main goal is to create a dominant impression.

If we analyze any good descriptive essay sample about a person, we will see that it’s a sensory description, that helps create a certain mood or atmosphere in a paper. Utilizing sensory details, you will be able to recreate the picture that you have in your mind for all readers.

Here are some effective techniques you should apply to make your descriptions more impressive. You can apply them to the other essay types and get an interesting and memorable result.

  • Use sensory-packed language instead of vague general words.
  • Figurative language such as similes, metaphors, comparison, contrasts, and analogies can help you make descriptions more lively and paint a picture in your reader’s mind.
  • Use  precise language like strong action verbs, specific nouns, and adjectives to give life to this great picture. Appropriate nouns and verbs help deliver a strong emotional impact on any audience.
  • Keep thoughts organized . Use any order you think is appropriate, like due to importance, spatial order (location) or chronological order (time). Each would be good for a descriptive paper.

How to start a descriptive essay about a person?

You may begin with the description of the physical appearance. Proceed with the explanation of how the person feels, thinks, and acts. Don’t forget about the interests, hobbies, and talents.

Remember that clear, logical, and well-balanced structure is the key to success of high-school writing or a college paper.

Although a descriptive paper relies on emotional appeal and allows students to be more creative than other types of high-school projects, you should brainstorm a lot of different ideas and create a basic outline to put ideas in the logical order.

The outline should include an intro with a thesis statement, the main body, and a conclusion.

In the main body, you should focus on the specific qualities of the person you describe.

Think of several ideas to support the main topic idea and use at least 3 other ideas to support topic in each paragraph.

You should do your best to make the content as appealing as possible, and leave your audience (not acquainted with your mom) with a strong feeling that they have actually met her and have built an emotional connection.

General recommendations for an essay about mom

  • When writing an essay about mom, you need to describe a real person so you should think about your mother’s life and background.
  • Before you start writing, think about the purpose of the whole paper. Decide what overall impression you want to convey. Create your general point, your unique thesis statement. Organize the entire paper around it.
  • You can start with an interesting relevant quote or provide a short funny story about your mother in the introduction to grab readers’ attention. You can also present a variety of reasons, explaining why you want to describe your mother .
  • Another great way to make a descriptive paper more engaging is to include a short dialogue .
  • In conclusion, you should present the main ideas of your description and emphasize their significance.
  • When you describe your mom’s appearance, don’t use a list-like approach. The task is not to describe everything from the top of her head down to her toes. Speak of particular aspects of your mother’s appearance, instead. That can help reveal her unique personality.
  • Don’t describe the full picture. Create an engaging description that will encourage your readers’ imagination .
  • Don’t use the same subject-verb pattern in all sentences because it will make your tone rather monotonous. Embed descriptive details and combine different sentences, instead. Utilize subjective clauses and compound sentences to express thoughts .
  • Don’t use too many adjectives when describing your mother’s appearance or character. Include only the most powerful words .
  • Avoid using clichés because they signal a lack of imagination. Be creative and use a dictionary to find vivid descriptive words.
  • Don’t use too many adverbs, they make any writing weak. It’s better to use specific verbs to describe actions . They make writing more powerful.
  • Use different transition words to connect all ideas and make the description of your mother logical .
  • When you finish your first draft, focus on improving your descriptions . Add some sensory details to make your paper appeal to readers’ emotions.
  • When you are satisfied with the content, proofread the final draft . Fix minor grammar mistakes, punctuation, spelling errors, and typos.

Now you know the basics on how to compose a descriptive essay about a person you love.

But before you start writing your own paper, there is the last advice we got for you.

Try reading a well-written descriptive essay about a person you admire example. It would provide you with a better understanding of the effective techniques you can use.

Creative writing should be taught to a child from the very beginning. It enables the assessment of creativity, thinking capacity, and writing ability of a student. For early and young learners such as Class 1, creative writing is an opportunity to demonstrate and express themselves on paper. This process also helps them develop their knowledge and writing skills.

A mother is an integral member of the family, and though dads are equally important in a child’s life, a mother somehow is more connected to her child. • The main sections (or parts) of an essay are the introduction, body, and conclusion.
  • Start writing the essay with the introduction. Introduce the topic that you plan to write about. This sets the stage for further development.
  • Once you have finished with the introduction, you can write a paragraph about the topic in the body. The body adds more detail to the main topic. The body can comprise the qualities you love about your mother and what she does for you.
  • The conclusion should comprise the final closing thoughts. You can write about what makes your mother the most important person in your life. Start by describing her. You can either start from her personal qualities or talk about how she is with you.

My mother is someone I love the most. I cannot imagine spending a day without her. She is beautiful and kind and is my idol. She is someone who helps me through the day with all my chores, from waking up in the morning to helping me bathe, packing my lunch box along with my father, to reading me bedtime stories. She does it all. I am so thankful to have my mother in my life. I want to be like my mother once I grow up – kind, and helpful. My mother is my support system, and I can share all that I feel with her.

My mom motivates me for growing and achieve better things in my life. She takes care of the whole family . She is so hard-working, dedicated, and very kind to everyone. My mother has done a lot of sacrifices for my happiness. Love and affection she gives me in infinite. I love her. I love my father too. I am luckiest to have such parents in my life. I have written a whole Essay on My Mother.

Essay on My Mother 500 words

My mother has had the greatest influence on me throughout my life. Through her, I have learned a lot of things about how to traverse the various facets of life. By seeing the kind of person she was while I grew up, I have modeled the kind of woman I want to become as well. My mother is my guide, idol, and source of inspiration in life, and I can say it with great pride.

My mother is the one person whom I can completely trust. She is the main reason for my progress and development since she works relentlessly. She never makes any distinctions within the family and provides our entire family with equal and undivided devotion and love.

Her devotion to her family is unwavering and complete. She puts her own needs and desires aside for the sake of her family. My mother has been my greatest source of inspiration and has played an important role in my spiritual, emotional, and intellectual development.

Mothers are an Inspiration

A mother contains several characteristics that make her the embodiment of love and dedication. She is forgiving and understands us when we make mistakes. She takes severe measures to fix our mistakes and ensures that we are aware of our responsibilities. From sunrise to night, day in and day out, a mother works tirelessly to fulfill all of our dreams.

A mother is someone who consoles you in your time of need, makes sacrifices, and makes every attempt to provide a comfortable life for her child. A mother is a selfless individual who, like the sun, chases away all darkness and shines the light of happiness and love onto her family.

Motivation is a state of mind that enables us to successfully complete any project or task. It is a form of a natural environment that aids our physical and social growth. We know that we can attain any goal, even in the most difficult circumstances, because of inspiration coming from a person or an event.

For the growth of our abilities, we seek encouragement from other sources, such as a popular figure or a special person near us who encourages us whether we can achieve the objective even in difficult situations.

As a result, we are capable of completing this task. Numerous people are inspired by legendary or historical figures, and then many people are inspired by famous people or their parents. It makes no difference who your source of inspiration is or how much you are inspired by its ideas and practices in order to achieve your goal.

Mothers are a constant source of inspiration and motivation for children to become good individuals as they grow older. They instill in them a sense of responsibility, care and affection for others, and a sense of resilience that can hardly be found anywhere else.

Every person must have some sense of creativity in his life from which he can draw inspiration in order to attain his life objectives and progress. A teacher might be an inspiration in someone’s life, a successful person can be an inspiration in someone else’s, but in my life, my mother is my biggest motivation. She is the individual who has motivated me to attain my life’s objectives and to keep moving forward.

My mother is also an admiration to me because, while most individuals work to gain popularity and a name in society, a mother never feels that. All she wants for her children is for them to achieve in life. She is not motivated by self-interest in her work. This is why I regard my mother to be a human manifestation of God.

My Mother is My Best Friend

My mother is my teacher, advisor, and greatest friend, and she plays many vital roles in my life. It works to instill confidence in me when I’m having an issue. Whatever I am today is solely due to my mother’s presence in my life, as she was present for both my successes and failures. I couldn’t picture my life without her, which is why I consider her my closest buddy.

Despite the many roles a woman plays in her life, the bond she shares with her mother is one of the purest relationships in the world. The bond between a mother and her child is indescribable. The mother is also the one who gives birth to her child and raises her. However, a mother’s love for her children never fades, and she is more concerned about their well-being than her own.

To safeguard her child, a mother is willing to face the worst disasters. A mother may shoulder all of the burdens alone, but she will not allow her offspring to be exposed to any form of heat. For these reasons, the mother is regarded as a manifestation of God on Earth, leading to the common proverb, “God cannot exist everywhere, therefore he made mothers.”

A Mother’s Strength

Although my mother may not physically be the strongest person, she nevertheless meets every challenge in her life and that of her family. She is a continual source of inspiration who reminds me to never give up in the face of adversity.

Above all, my mother is a major source of motivation for me, since she encourages me to enhance my abilities, academics, and talents. She inspires me to try again, to never give up, and work hard until I succeed. The way she traverses through the innumerable obstacles she faces in life is a constant reminder of the strength of a woman and how we can face any adversity that comes our way.

During difficult times, my mom is a lifesaver. Despite the fact that she chastises and corrects me, she is the only person capable of solving the problem, whether it is school or life-related. She is my instructor and guide, who shows me the way and steers me through the toughest moments.

Above all, even at the darkest of moments, she never leaves my side. She is an excellent teacher, a rigorous parent, a loyal friend, and a delightful companionship. Not only my mother, but every mother is an expression of God who devotes her entire life to her family and is deserving of much respect and admiration.

A mother possesses both inherent and learned attributes that identify her job as a mother. The key trait of a mother is responsibilities, which comes with motherhood. Regardless of age or repercussions, my mother displays unselfish love and affection.

She is my greatest source of strength and support, and she never fails to inspire and drive us through all of life’s ups and downs. Mothers can understand and empathize with their children. My mother’s most striking characteristic is her tremendous level of acceptance and tolerance. Despite the fact that she is dealing with several issues, she remains calm and patient.

How I Helped My Mother When She Was Sick Essay Example 1

When a loved one falls ill, it can be a challenging and emotional time for everyone involved. In my case, when my mother fell sick, I knew that I had to step up and assist her in any way that I could. Seeing my mother in pain and discomfort was difficult, but it also gave me an opportunity to show her how much I loved and cared for her. In this essay, I will describe the ways in which I helped my mother when she was sick.

One of the first things that I did when my mother fell sick was to take on additional household chores. I knew that my mother was already feeling overwhelmed and stressed, so I wanted to ease her workload as much as possible. I took over the cooking and cleaning duties, ensuring that the house remained clean and tidy. I also made sure that my mother had a healthy and nutritious diet, preparing meals that would help her regain her strength and energy.

Accompanying my mother to doctor’s appointments and helping her follow her treatment plan was another way in which I provided support. I made sure that my mother took her medication on time and followed her doctor’s instructions to the letter. I also helped her keep track of her appointments and made sure that she didn’t miss any follow-up visits. Being there for my mother during her medical appointments was not only helpful for her, but it also gave me a chance to learn more about her condition and how I could best support her.

Perhaps the most important way in which I helped my mother during her illness was by providing emotional support and encouragement. I knew that my mother was feeling scared and uncertain about her health, and I wanted to be there for her as much as possible. I listened to her concerns and fears, offering words of comfort and reassurance whenever she needed them. I also encouraged her to stay positive and hopeful, reminding her that she was strong and capable of overcoming any obstacles that came her way.

Helping my mother during her illness was a challenging but rewarding experience. It allowed me to show my mother how much she meant to me and how much I was willing to do for her. Through taking on additional household chores, accompanying her to doctor’s appointments, and providing emotional support and encouragement, I was able to help my mother through a difficult time and strengthen our bond.

How I Helped My Mother When She Was Sick Essay Example 2

When my mother fell ill, I knew that I had to step up and help her in any way I could. As her child, it was my responsibility to be there for her during this difficult time. Over the course of her illness, I provided her with physical, emotional, and mental support. In this essay, I will describe how I helped my mother when she was sick. I will outline the various tasks I undertook, the medical assistance I provided, and the emotional care I gave her.

During my mother’s illness, I took on many household tasks that she could not manage. I cooked meals for her, cleaned the house, and did the laundry. I ensured that the house was kept clean and tidy to provide a comfortable environment for her to rest and recover. I made sure that all the household chores were completed efficiently and effectively, allowing my mother to focus on her recovery. I also made sure to stock up on groceries and other essential supplies to ensure that she had everything she needed.

Accompanying my mother to doctor’s appointments was another way I helped her during her illness. I made sure that she never missed an appointment and that she always followed her medication regimen. I took care of her medication schedule, ensuring that she took her medicines on time and in the right doses. I also made sure that she had all the necessary medical supplies, such as oxygen tanks, so that she could manage her symptoms at home.

Emotional support was crucial during my mother’s illness. I spent time with her, listening to her concerns, and offering encouragement. I made sure that she did not feel alone during this time and that she knew she had someone to rely on. I tried to keep her spirits up by watching her favorite TV shows with her, playing board games, and reading books aloud to her. I also made sure to stay positive and optimistic, encouraging her to focus on her recovery.

In conclusion, helping my mother during her illness was a challenging yet rewarding experience. I assisted her with household chores, accompanied her to doctor’s appointments, and provided emotional support. The experience taught me the importance of being there for loved ones during difficult times. I am grateful for the opportunity to have helped my mother when she needed me the most.

How I Helped My Mother When She Was Sick Essay Example 3

My mother has always been my rock, providing unwavering support and love throughout my life. However, when she fell ill, it was my turn to step up and take care of her. I wanted to make sure she felt loved and supported, and that her recovery was as smooth as possible. In this essay, I will describe how I helped my mother when she was sick.

The first thing I did when my mother fell ill was to take care of the household chores. I knew that she would not be able to manage them on her own, so I took charge of cooking, cleaning, and laundry. I ensured that the house was neat and tidy, and that my mother had access to healthy and nutritious meals. I also made sure that she was comfortable by adjusting the temperature, providing extra blankets, and fluffing her pillows. By taking care of these chores, I was able to ease her burden and allow her to focus on her recovery.

In addition to taking care of household chores, I accompanied my mother to doctor’s appointments and made sure she took her medication on time. I knew that it was essential for her to receive proper medical care, so I made sure she did not miss any appointments. I also kept track of her medication schedule and reminded her when it was time to take her pills. By doing so, I made sure that she was receiving the best possible care and that her recovery was on track.

Finally, I provided emotional support to my mother throughout her illness. I spent time with her, listening to her concerns, and offering words of encouragement. I knew that she was going through a tough time, and I wanted to make sure that she felt loved and supported. I would often sit with her, talk to her about her worries, and offer her a shoulder to lean on. I also tried to keep her spirits up by sharing funny stories and making her laugh. By providing emotional support, I was able to help my mother feel less alone and more hopeful about her recovery.

In conclusion, helping my mother when she was sick was one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life. By taking care of household chores, accompanying her to doctor’s appointments, and providing emotional support, I was able to help her feel loved and supported during her illness. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been there for her when she needed me the most, and I will always cherish the memories of our time together during her recovery.

Famous poet George Eliot quotes

Life began with waking up

And loving my mother’s face

YES, we all start our day with our mother’s smiling face. My day started when my mother gets me up early in the morning. For me, my mom is the best example of love and kindness in this universe. She knows how to take care of us.

From the very tender age, I became a fan of her as I like my mom’s hardworking and dedicated nature. My mom sacrificed a lot in order to shape my life. She has brought me up with utmost love and care.

She could understand me even when I couldn’t utter a word. Mother is another name of true love. A mother loves his child selflessly and doesn’t expect or demand anything in return. My mother whom I call mom turns our house into a home.

My mother is the busiest person at our home. She gets up much before the sun rises and start to perform her duty. She cooks food for us, takes care of us, goes shopping and even plans our future too.

In our family, my mother plans how to spend and how to save for the future. My mom was my first teacher. She also plays a vital role in shaping my moral character. She doesn’t even forget to take care of our health.

Whenever any one of our family members falls sick, my mother spends a sleepless night and sits beside him/her and take care of him/her for the whole night. My mom never tires of her responsibility. My father also depends on her whenever he finds any difficulty in taking any serious decision.

The word mother is full of emotion and love. The value of this sweet word is truly felt by those children who don’t have anyone to call ‘mother’. So the one who has his/her mother beside them should feel proud.

But in today’s world, some wicked children consider their mother a burden when she gets old. The person who spends all her life for their children become a burden for their child at the last moment of her life.

Some selfish child even doesn’t bother to send his/her mom to old age home. This is really a shame and unfortunate incident as well. The government should keep an eye to those incidents and should take those shameless children in judicial custody.

I want to stand with my mother like a shadow all the time. I know today I am here only because of her. So I want to serve my mother for the rest of my life. I also want to build my carrier so that my mom feels proud of me.

Reading Bonnie Smith-Yackel’s Essay “My Mother Never Worked”

The essay “My Mother Never Worked” by Bonnie Smith-Yackel explores the challenges her mother encountered while managing the farm and caring for her family, along with the knowledge she gained from interacting with the Social Security office. The story commences with Smith-Yackel engaging in a conversation with a social worker as she endeavours to acquire information about her mother’s death-benefit payment.

The social worker holds Smith-Yackel while she reflects on her mother’s life. Her mother and father were wed in February 1921, and their first child arrived in January 1922. Being farmers, Smith-Yackel’s parents shared household duties such as cooking, cleaning, and tending to the farm. Additionally, her mother skillfully sewed rugs and clothes, dedicating herself fully to her home responsibilities. Despite not holding a conventional job in a business or corporation, her work at home was akin to a full-time job. In 1936, Smith-Yackel’s mother unfortunately suffered a miscarriage during the sixth month of her pregnancy.

Without paying upfront

At the age of 44 in 1941, Smith-Yackel’s mother gave birth to her seventh child, making a total of seven siblings. However, it wasn’t until 1959 that the youngest sibling finished High School. Despite having eight children, Smith-Yackel’s mother successfully managed their farm and household chores.

In 1960, they decided to sell their cows but kept the chickens and ducks for plucking feathers. These feathers were then used for pillow-making purposes. Unfortunately, tragedy struck in 1969 when Bonnie’s parents got into a car accident while on their way to buy sugar. This incident left her mother paralyzed from the waist down.

Sadly, a year later, Bonnie’s father passed away, leaving her mother to face challenges alone. Eventually, her mother entered rehabilitation to learn how to navigate life in a wheelchair.

During her mother’s rehab, the therapist remarked on her mother’s strength, proudly stating “she did fifteen pushups today- fifteen! I’ve never known a woman so strong!” (par 23). Meanwhile, the social worker interrupts her phone call and delivers the disappointing news that her mother is not eligible for a $255 death benefit check due to her lack of employment history. I appreciated how Bonnie Smith-Yackel skillfully included various specific details, such as dates and events, to highlight the tireless efforts her mother put in over the years. By employing a flashback technique, Smith-Yackel effectively narrates her story while on the phone.

In the midst of a phone call with Social Security, Smith-Yackel begins to reflect on her mother’s life, sending us back in time as she waits on hold. Smith-Yackel places great importance on specific dates and her mother’s age. For instance, she shares, “Their first baby, a daughter, was born in January 1922, when my mother was twenty-six years old” (par 13). She skillfully narrates the events, making the reader feel present and enabling them to follow the timeline.

Although I found this essay enjoyable, I have conflicting emotions about it. Some elements captured my interest, like the author reaching out to Social Security for her mother’s death benefits even though her mother never held a legitimate job. Nevertheless, besides that aspect, I derived pleasure from reading the essay. Being someone passionate about history, I especially valued the incorporation of dates as they enhanced my ability to imagine the time period more vividly.

It is intriguing to consider the challenges she faced in taking care of her family, given that she had eight children. It was common at that time for families to be of such a large size. I find it amusing how she talks about her mother’s responsibilities of managing both the household and farm, almost like a full-time job. However, because she never had an official job, she cannot receive death benefit payments. All in all, I really enjoyed this essay and would recommend it to other readers.

Opinion: How are you honoring non-romantic love for Valentine’s Day? For me, it starts with my mom.

Tyler Renner poses for a picture with his mom.

Over the years, I’ve been lucky and unlucky in love, but no matter what, my mom will always be my Valentine

• Show more sharing options

Renner is a communications professional and LGBTQ+ advocate. He lives in University Heights.

Every February, stores fill with heart-shaped trinkets and Valentine’s Day-themed candies. Many people dread the 14th day of the second month of the year. Those in partner relationships may feel the pressure to do something epically romantic. If you’re not in a partner relationship, it might feel more like “Singles Awareness Day.” While the holiday originated as a Christian feast day and evolved to celebrate romantic love — and to sell you things — for me, Valentine’s Day always reminds me of my mom. Not only does my mom love hearts, but she also loves going out of her way to make people feel special. Over the years, I’ve been lucky and unlucky in love, but no matter what, my mom will always be my Valentine.

For many of us, Valentine’s Day evokes memories of passing out cards and candy in elementary school. In my classes, we would decorate shoeboxes with construction paper, glitter and stickers. We were required to bring enough valentines and candy for everyone in the class and I looked forward to getting little cards themed with popular cartoons like Pokemon and SpongeBob. The egalitarian nature of these requirements made sense to me, no one wants to feel left out or unloved. So as a kid, it just felt like a day to celebrate platonic love.

That changed one year when I had a crush on my best friend, Chara, so I had to make her a special card. I cut out a big heart, glued my class photo to the center of it, and adorned it with a glitter border. My parents thought it was adorable, but I told them I didn’t want to take it to school and give it to her in front of everyone else. Their solution was to drive me to her house so I could drop it off. Still being too shy, I wouldn’t get out of the car, so my mom went to the front door, knocked and gave it to her mom. That was the first and last “crush” I had on a girl, but Chara and I look back on it now and laugh. I was better as a gay best friend anyways.

For the next few years, I didn’t have many crushes and I didn’t date anyone, so any romantic connotations with the day were lost. Since my mom’s love of hearts earned her the nickname, “the Queen of Hearts,” the holiday felt more like hers anyways. My mom has pillows, picture frames, towels, key chains, cups and more that are decorated with hearts. I know this is a common admiration, but for my brothers and me, it makes shopping for gifts for her quite easy. Every year when her holiday rolls around, I make sure to find something new to add to her collection and I hand-make her a card.

In 2021, I wanted to do something even more special; I decided to get a tattoo dedicated to my mom on Valentine’s Day. My mom isn’t particularly fond of tattoos, but since I have a collection of them, I figured adding one with a deeper meaning that she could appreciate while she’s still around would be a nice gesture.

A tattoo in Tyler Renner's mom's handwriting reads "I love you mucho" with a heart.

One of my mom’s catchphrases is “I love you mucho.” She would always write that in lunchbox notes, cards and in text messages. I searched my box of letters and cards and found my 25th birthday card with the perfect script, adorned with a heart even. I found a local tattoo artist who specializes in delicate handwriting and booked my appointment. Once it was complete, I sent her a photo of my fresh ink, still red and puffy. She called right away and after answering a few questions, “Yes, it is real. Yes, it is your handwriting. Yes, I am for real,” she replied, “That is one of the most thoughtful gifts anyone has ever given me.” Mission accomplished.

While I don’t have any more tattoos planned, my hope is that this essay will memorialize how much love I have for my mom and how Valentine’s Day will always make me think of her. So, whatever you have planned, be it a fancy dinner with your partner, buying yourself a bouquet of roses or sending your mom a card, remember that Valentine’s Day should be about giving and receiving love in all its forms.

My Mother Got on a Bike. It Changed Her Life.

An illustration of a woman with gray hair wearing a yellow shirt and colorful bike shorts, riding a bicycle. Behind her several figures stand in a cloud of dust.

By Caroline Paul

The author of “Tough Broad: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking — How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Life as We Age.”

When my mother was 62 years old, she dusted off a clunky Cannondale with Mary Poppins handles and joined a bicycling group. She was recovering from heartbreak and had just moved to a new town. She had no background as an outdoor activity enthusiast: She did not camp or hike, had never, say, paddled a kayak. But the bike group was made up of 60-, 70- and 80-year-olds. How hard could it be to tag along?

As I approach the age my mother was then, I notice my peers are increasingly galled by their advancing years. And why not? My friends are simply responding to the very real negative messaging around older women: fading looks, frail bones, cognitive decline, no cultural significance. I overheard one woman discussing plastic surgery and remarking, “Who doesn’t want to turn back time?” It’s hard not to get sucked into that mind-set.

Yet the way we look at our own aging predicts what our future holds, as Becca Levy, a professor of public health at Yale, writes in her recent book, “Breaking the Age Code .” We increase our risk of cardiac events and speed up cognitive decline, studies show, if we believe getting older is a time of suffering and diminution. More important, the opposite is also true: Those of us who view later life as a time of growth and vitality are more likely to stay healthy and to keep senility at bay . We may also end up living a whopping seven and a half years longer . In one instance, Dr. Levy looked at data from a longitudinal study and came to this astonishing conclusion: Mind-set was the most significant factor determining individuals’ longevity.

But all around us, the media, dating apps, our youth-obsessed culture and our own preconceived notions lead to one verdict: Aging stinks. It will be a white-knuckle ride, women are told, through increasing frailty and irrelevance. Affirmations and positive self-talk — skimming the surface of our psyches, outnumbered in the scrum — don’t stand a chance. Dr. Levy’s studies show us that we need to believe fervently in the vitality of our future. But how?

My mother joined that bike group. What was initially a distraction spun into a passion. She became a serious cyclist, the kind of serious who wore brightly colored bike shirts, used Lance Armstrong breathing techniques and planned group rides. I rode my bike with my mother once; believe me, there is nothing more disheartening than being trash-talked by one’s mom as she huffs by you on a hill. Pedaling through her 70s, she explored steep mountain roads and new towns. She entered 100-mile races, changed flats and downed electrolytes on the go.

I was envious of her new life. Except for the Metamucil regimens and early bedtimes, she and her fellow seniors resembled any weekend warrior. But unlike so many people I knew, she and her friends didn’t seem to want to be younger. My mother became more fit, more social and more emotionally expressive than I’d ever seen her.

Turns out, my mother’s cycling habit meant that she was checking many of the boxes — health, novelty, community and purpose — needed to age well. (For others, this might come in the form of a language class, a book club, a commitment to mastering a plank.) Yet when my mother went biking, there was something more: She was embracing attributes like exhilaration, exploration, awe, a little bit of recklessness. This provided the final pillar for healthy and fulfilling aging: Dr. Levy’s positive mind-set.

But how? My mom didn’t live in a bubble; she had not escaped subliminal toxic messaging. It was the bicycling, with its demands for physical vitality, the uncertainty of every ride, the grit on the uphill, the inherent “wheeeeee” aspect of fun on the downhill — all powerful proof of that messaging’s mendacity. As her beliefs were being subverted, her biking adventures also drew surprised and admiring reactions from peers and from those much younger (like her own children). “Wow!” and “Badass!” were the elated responses, which boosted her passion for the sport and her life. (Another thing not expected of older women: passion.)

Consider another study , in which Dr. Levy and her co-authors used computers to display positive subliminal phrases about aging (like “spry,” “capable”) to older participants in several sessions over several weeks. The researchers found these participants performed better on physical tests and ended up with a more favorable perception of aging.

Likewise, my mother’s biking adventures served as their own flashing screen. Every pedal uphill was a subliminal shout that she was strong. Every heart skip on a downhill told her she was brave and fun. Every new route she planned showed she was capable. She was being immersed in implicit feedback that upended what she (and others) had been told one could and could not do or be at this age.

Most older women don’t join bike groups. Instead, we begin to pull back on physical activities, risk taking or novel pursuits. Too dangerous for our failing body and mind, we are told in ways both subliminal and overt, and we believe it. But what if danger is found in failing to pursue exhilaration, exploration and physical vitality?

Unwittingly my mother knew: These attributes don’t imperil us. They protect us.

Activating exhilaration, exploration and physical vitality will be different for each of us. In my quest to understand healthy aging. I met a 93-year-old hiker, a 74-year-old BMX biker, an 80-year-old scuba diver and a slew of boogie boarders in their 60s, 70s and 80s. I walked on the wing of a plane at 3,000 feet in the air. But I also went bird-watching. Adventure, it turns out, is in the eye of the beholder and can be had by almost all of us, despite physical restrictions, financial constraints or limited backcountry know-how.

Over and over, these women told me in different ways: Pick an outdoor activity, one that will electrify and engage, because it will change your life. To those who warn you against such foolishness, remind them of what Joan Captain, a player on one of San Diego’s senior women’s soccer leagues, told a journalist when she was 72: “People say, oh, that’s so dangerous, you know, you should take it easy. And I say, well, you see that couch over there? The couch will kill you.”

My mother stopped cycling only as she approached 80. She had begun to feel unsteady on her bike; she was soon diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. At some point, then, the messaging has some truth. But this isn’t disheartening. This is just one more reason to embrace everything now. I’m sure my mother would still be pedaling if not for this stroke of bad luck. Instead, she gets outside any way she can, often on a walk around her neighborhood. On a recent amble, she waxed nostalgic but not about her youth. “I wish I was 60 again,” she mused, and we slowly continued down the sidewalk.

Caroline Paul’s books include “Tough Broad: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking — How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Lives as We Age” and “The Gutsy Girl: Escapades for Your Life of Epic Adventure.”

"The Sopranos" helped save my sweet mom's life

I will never forget the first time i heard my 80-year-old mother say, "someone’s gonna get whacked tonight", by barbara neal varma.

" The Sopranos " turned 25 this year, stirring memories of the groundbreaking HBO series that made fictional mob boss Tony Soprano, played by the late James Gandolfini, a TV icon. I know I’ll never forget the very first time I heard “Someone’s gonna get whacked tonight!” Especially since it came from my sweet 80-year-old mom.

I pressed the phone closer to my ear. “What’d you say, Mom?”

“Someone’s gonna get whacked tonight. On 'The Sopranos.' It’s a little gruesome,” she confessed, "but they really pull you in.”

I’m not sure what surprised me more: My own mother going gangster, or the sudden excitement in her voice.

“Wait, where are you seeing 'The Sopranos'?”

“On TV. It comes on after ' The View .'”

It was a bit disconcerting to think my normally soft-spoken mommy was watching a show I thought too violent to watch myself.

“And you’re OK watching it?” I asked.

“I have to close my eyes sometimes. Have you seen it? It’s getting real good. I think Christopher’s going to make his bones tonight.”

Looking back, I credit the show with contributing to the extended length and quality of my mom’s life after what would’ve presumably been a debilitating diagnosis.

A laugh escaped me then. I couldn’t help it. Good for Christopher , I thought, good for him "making his bones ," whatever the heck that meant. Anything that made my mom sound so happy back then was gold to me.

Just two weeks prior, during a routine chest X-ray, they’d noticed a suspicious bulge where a suspicious bulge shouldn’t be, sitting on her aorta. The thing about aneurysms, Dr. Google said, was they tend to grow over time, leading to stroke or instant . . . good God.

Mom used to dance in the kitchen when I was growing up, making up her own moves to songs she’d record off the radio using the little cassette player she carried around the house. I’d watch, entranced and entertained, peering over my PB&J as she’d pop in a cassette and then spin around or rock back and forth. Her favorite was “My Guy” by Mary Wells. She’d really rev up the engine then, shaking her hips and tapping a wooden spoon in the air, still damp from stirring her homemade spaghetti sauce.

Mom also spent much of my childhood lying on her bed, obsessing for hours about the latest life event to test her fragile nerves. Big stuff, little stuff, it didn’t matter. Her anxiety had a way of leveling the playing field: Making the “wrong” move at her bridge game became as triggering as finding out her firstborn, my oldest brother, had Type 1 diabetes.

Soon after being told about the aneurysm, she’d taken to her bed again, depressed and afraid to leave the house, lest something happened.

Then she met Tony.

She’d fallen asleep on the couch watching "The Andy Griffith Show" reruns. When she woke up hours later, Andy and Barney had been replaced with a balding guy holding a gun to the temple of a guy with a full head of hair, to hear her tell it. It startled her when the gun went off. The blood spattered. But for that shocking, magical moment, she forgot all about her sorrow. She kept watching.

"And if we do nothing?” Mom asked. “Will I just go out in a blaze of glory?"

Of course, being a sudden fan of the show made her a bit of a wild card in public. Mom never took up swearing or dropped any F-bombs, but she’d often repeat some adults-only phrases that Tony would say while failing to use her indoor voice. Noisy malls were fine. Movie theaters, less so. The center, red-leather booth at the Ruby’s Diner that we liked to frequent? Fuhgeddaboudit.

Barely a week after the initial diagnosis, we were back for the consult with her heart doctor. More bad news. Any surgery to reduce or remove the aneurysm would be risky considering its proximity to her spinal cord. The chance of paralysis was high.

“And if we do nothing?” Mom asked. “Will I just go out in a blaze of glory?”

Doc’s eyebrows went up.

“She’s been watching 'The Sopranos,'” I explained.

The eyebrows went down. “Actually, these things, when they resolve, tend to be quick and painless,” he said before quickly moving on. “The good news is the aneurysm is small enough to forestall surgery.”

They would check it again in a few months with another X-ray. Meantime, she was told to keep her blood pressure down — that was key.

As was keeping up with “The Sopranos.” Looking back, I credit the show with contributing to the extended length and quality of my mom’s life after what would’ve presumably been a debilitating diagnosis. Instead, inspired by Tony’s survival-at-all-cost attitude, she dutifully took her blood pressure meds, walked laps around her small condo for exercise, and even vicariously benefited from Tony’s therapy sessions — “He has panic attacks, too,” she told me — with Dr. Jennifer Melfi, played by Lorraine Bracco.

Three months in, we went in for the follow-up chest X-ray.

Two days later: “It appears to have grown.”

They did a CT scan just to make sure. Later that night, the phone rang. It was her doctor’s office asking me to please bring my mom in the next morning to hear the results.

We arrived early. I guided Mom into the waiting room and grabbed the last two empty seats in a row of cushioned chairs, sitting her on the end to ensure her shy tush would only have to touch her daughter’s. She’d been quiet on the drive over. Me, too.

“So, what’s going on with Tony and the guys?” I asked, playing my ace.

She brightened. “Well, let’s see. Last night one of the guys got mad because another guy said his wife was fat.” She gave me a telling glance over her glasses. “You don’t say something like that to a mobster.”

“I imagine not.”

“So then the guy — the one who said the other guy’s wife was fat, wanted to—” She glanced around then whispered, “You know.”

“Whack him?”

She laughed and patted my knee, eyes sparkling. Then just as quickly, they turned sad. “I’m sorry you have to go through all this again.”

I knew what she was talking about. Years back, we’d lost my dad too soon, too fast to pancreatic cancer. We’d gone from shock to grief in zero to 60 days, give or take. There had been many waiting room vigils then, too.

I covered her hand with mine. “All what? You mean hearing your 'Sopranos' stories and catching stink-eye from everyone in the room?” I flashed her a devilish grin. “Wouldn’t miss it for the world.” Then I went back to reading my magazine, blinking back tears.

The inner door opened and the doctor himself called us in, guiding us through his office and into a smaller, darker room save for the lightboards across one wall.

He pulled three X-ray sheets free from their manila envelope and posted them against the glowing panels. An assortment of strange white shapes stood out against the black backgrounds. Mom and I stared at the array, two stargazers searching for answers.

Doc pulled a pen from his shirt pocket and outlined the outer edge of a fuzzy, misshapen splotch about the size of my thumb. There it was. The silver bullet.

He held the radiologist’s report in his hand. I held my breath.

“CT scans can show us so much more than a chest X-ray,” he began. “Which is a good thing, because in this case, it looks like it hasn’t grown after all.”

I heard the words but didn’t move, afraid even the slightest motion would scare the good news away. Mom stood just as still next to me. Seeing no response, he said it again. This time joy broke through.

“Hear that?” I said, laying an arm across my mother’s shoulders and hugging her close. “It hasn’t grown.” I kissed the top of her head, her silky white hair felt feather soft against my lips.

A few days later I rang Mom’s doorbell to announce my arrival for our weekly grocery run. Her door flew open, and who appeared but Dancing Mom, beckoning me with swaying arms into the living room.

“It’s 'The Sopranos,'” she said as she twirled around once, twice for good measure. Sure enough, there on the TV screen was her buddy Tony smoking his cigar and steering his way through Jersey during the show’s opening credits. Mom rocked her hips to the theme song and stirred the air with an imaginary spoon. She even threw in a knee twirl — balancing herself on an end table first, thank God — for good measure. I tossed down my coat and keys and happily joined in. Vons could wait.

The aneurysm did finally catch up with Mom, but not until five well-lived years later. Until then, we savored every moment, every laugh, every hug, lest it be our last. Truth is, we’re all living on borrowed time and would be advised to treat each waking day as a gift. Danger lurks, but so does grace.

As for that much-talked-about "Sopranos" finale, she never saw it.

At the time, Mom said she didn’t want to know how it ended. Me neither, actually; there was something jinxy about it. Besides, Mom was doing so well. Even the aneurysm seemed to be behaving. Better to go out for ice cream instead.

But thanks to the anniversary of the show's first season, I kept seeing Tony’s face front and center on the Max menu, double-dog daring me to come on, watch the end, already! What—was I a wuss?

Yes. Yes, I was; afraid it’d be too emotional without Mom sitting next to me, telling me when to close my eyes. (Which turned out to be the scene when Phil’s head encountered his wife’s car, by the way. You’re welcome.)

Eventually, though, Tony’s stare wore me down. So I watched it, killing a box of Kleenex in the process, missing her so much.

During the final season of her life, my Mom had lived vicariously through a fictional TV character, notorious mob boss Tony Soprano, and in some ways, she’d died that way, too. The day before, my husband and I took her to Ruby’s Diner again where she enjoyed a tall glass of vanilla shake, mercifully oblivious of what the next day would bring.

Thankfully, when the gun in her chest finally went off, it was as quick and painless (I want to believe) as her doctor had predicted. No blaze of glory or violent, final scene. For Tony, either. Only the reward of a silent, peaceful end. One second, there is life; the next, it’s gone, cut to black.

Except I’m sure for my brave, dancing mom, instead of darkness, there was light.

Dear Abby: My boyfriend's mom is restricting how often I can visit him at college

DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend just started his first year of college. We have been together for about a year and a half. He isn’t super far away, but his mom is restricting us from seeing each other “too often.”

Every time I go to visit him, I pay for my own train ticket. I don’t really think my visiting him is affecting her in any way. We both want to be respectful of her and her wishes, but when it’s possible to see him, I’d like to be able to.

A relationship is hard to maintain seeing each other only once a month. He does come home for breaks and some weekends, which I am grateful for. I just don’t feel she should be making those choices for us. I want to communicate to her about this, but I don’t want to seem disrespectful or rude. What should I do? -- THREE IS A CROWD

DEAR THREE: Your boyfriend’s mother wants to be sure her son concentrates on his education with as few distractions as possible. She may also be fearful that the two of you are becoming intimate before you are mature enough to manage the consequences.

If you are smart, you will refrain from having the discussion you are contemplating. If the visitation schedule is too restrictive, your boyfriend is the person who should talk to his mother about it.

Massacre survivors plead with Republican candidates to talk about guns

essay on my mother story

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The pastor meant to devote Bible study to the gravity of marriage, but here they were, once again, talking about guns.

“A man shot his girlfriend and then killed himself,” one congregant said from the second row of their historic Black church, referencing a clip he’d just seen on the news.

“How do we intercede,” a woman to his left chimed in, “when we notice the warning signs?”

The Rev. Eric S.C. Manning, senior pastor at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church — known worldwide as Mother Emanuel — had prayed for the words to counsel his members through America’s ceaseless violence. They were all aware, intimately so, that the worst can happen and nothing much changes.

This Wednesday meeting used to convene in the basement before a white supremacist showed up one June night in 2015 and opened fire, killing nine people. Now Republican presidential candidates and their backers crisscrossing South Carolina ahead of the state’s Feb. 24 primary seemed to be exhibiting what the 56-year-old pastor called a “lapse in memory.”

Since the start of January, the United States has counted six mass killings, its rate of firearm-wrought bloodshed outpacing every other wealthy nation by far. The candidates vying for the GOP nomination, if they address the carnage at all, make no mention of safeguarding access to the weapons used in attack after attack after attack.

Donald Trump and Nikki Haley’s comments on the campaign trail have troubled Manning and others close to Mother Emanuel, many of whom have lobbied for stronger background checks, a policy shift most Americans support, only to meet resistance from conservative leaders. The familiar disappointment crept back when, just as the Republican contenders were descending on Iowa for its caucuses, a teenager not far from Des Moines staged the first school rampage of 2024 . Meet-and-greets resumed before the dead were buried.

Haley, the former South Carolina governor, had offered the most detailed policy solution : funding more mental health care — though, she said, the states would have to pay for it. The pastor doubted that approach on its own would make a dent in the country’s daily death toll.

Trump, meanwhile, was calling himself “the best friend gun owners have ever had in the White House.” As president, he briefly considered tightening background checks in 2019 after gunmen in El Paso and Dayton, Ohio, killed 31 people over one August weekend. Then, under pressure from the National Rifle Association, he scrapped that idea, saying, “A lot of the people who put me where I am are strong supporters of the Second Amendment.” These days, he boasted about doing nothing — literally, the pastor lamented.

“During my four years, nothing happened,” Trump told a gathering of NRA members this month in Pennsylvania. “And there was great pressure on me having to do with guns. We did nothing.”

His remarks at a northeast Iowa rally one day after the school shooting in rural Perry killed an 11-year-old boy and the high school principal had landed like salt in the Mother Emanuel congregation’s psychic wound. It was “so surprising” and “just terrible,” Trump said before adding , “but we have to get over it.”

Looking out at the pews now, the pastor saw people who had not been surprised, not in the least, including church historian Lee Bennett, who’d grown up practically across the street and knew all nine of the Charleston church massacre victims.

Bennett recited their names while guiding tours of Mother Emanuel. There was Myra Thompson, who had been a few years behind him in grade school, perhaps also prone to staring out the window at the pool only White kids could use. And DePayne Middleton-Doctor, who’d left behind four young daughters.

A retired Army infantry officer, Bennett respected the Second Amendment but wished lawmakers would update regulations for the modern era. Back when it was written, he liked to point out, a single-shot musket took a minute to reload. Armed with a handgun, Dylann Roof had invaded their basement and sprayed 10 bullets in a matter of seconds. Now Bible study convenes upstairs behind locked doors.

Tonight the group was discussing what Jesus says about divorce when the conversation veered to abusive partners with guns. The woman who’d asked the question — “How do we intercede when we see the signs?” — shared that she would have died had she stayed in her marriage.

The pastor understood. As a kid, he’d watched his mother endure a violent relationship.

“I was in ninth grade,” Manning told the congregants. “I was scrawny. He had a gun, and I could not even protect my mom.”

The police lacked power, too: South Carolina has never had a red-flag law , so state courts can’t intervene to temporarily remove a firearm from someone deemed dangerous. Haley wanted to keep it that way, saying at a town hall last summer after announcing her candidacy: “I don’t trust the government to deal with red-flag laws. I don’t trust that they won’t take them away from people who rightfully deserve to have them.”

She and Trump had both opposed closing what activists dubbed the Charleston loophole, the technicality that permitted Roof to buy a .45-caliber Glock before the FBI completed a background check that would have rendered him ineligible . Under federal law, gun sales can proceed if such a probe takes longer than three days, but since the massacre, 22 states have moved to expand that window. South Carolina has not.

Manning hoped Haley would change her mind, considering she’d attended the funerals here. Instead, just that morning, she was talking about Mother Emanuel on “The Breakfast Club” radio show, detailing her push to remove the Confederate flag from the State House in wake of the killings. Roof had uploaded photos of himself holding the flag, along with a manifesto in which he declared: “We have no skinheads, no real KKK, no one doing anything but talking on the internet. Well someone has to have the bravery to take it to the real world.”

Yet in the same interview, Haley said the national media had rushed in to “define” the massacre. “They wanted to make it about guns,” she said. “They wanted to make it about racism …”

It was about guns, the pastor thought. It was about racism.

It was why he’d traded his sports coat and bow tie uniform for casual attire that helped him blend in. It was why his office had a flat-screen television playing 14 angles of surveillance footage.

It was why Hali Doctor had to grow up without her mother.

Trump’s team was organizing a fundraiser upstate, and Haley would soon be heading to her next meet-and-greet in the capital at Doc’s Barbeque. Six miles south, Hali Doctor was trying to ignore it all.

In the library on Columbia College’s leafy campus one late January afternoon, she scrolled through TikTok videos before her first volleyball practice of the season.

Swipe. Someone was giving a sparkly eye shadow tutorial.

Swipe. Someone was talking about an “anti-aging drug for dogs.”

Swipe. No one was talking about politics or anything the college senior found equally depressing. Hali, 21, had tweaked her algorithm to maintain what she called her “bubble of peace.”

In the rare event a candidate appeared on her screen, she’d flick them away, though her strategy wasn’t foolproof. She’d heard what Trump said after the Iowa school shooting: “But we have to get over it.”

Hali said she would never “get over” what happened to her mom.

DePayne Middleton-Doctor, an ordained minister who loved singing Gospel songs, was 49 when Roof ambushed Bible study. Hali had been 13, the second-to-youngest of her four daughters.

Her oldest sister turned to activism, but Hali dreaded revisiting her pain that way. She’d even declined an invitation to meet President Biden last month when he visited Mother Emanuel for a campaign event .

“I’ve got class,” she told her friends, who didn’t pry.

She appreciated that Biden was trying to restrict access to guns in the face of endless gridlock. Her sister had kept her apprised of everyone’s stances. But to Hali, no politician was saying with appropriate passion what she longed to hear — that gun violence was the most urgent issue in America, that it should be treated like a national emergency, that people like her, millions of people, must cope with loss every second of their lives. It’s always humming in the background, threatening to spill into conversations that should be mundane. It’s tattooed on her left hand: “Angel Energy,” because, her family says, she and her mother shared the same gentle aura.

The last politician who inspired her was President Barack Obama, when he sang “Amazing Grace” at the memorial for Mother Emanuel’s slain pastor. Hali stood in the crowd while the whole world watched and, in that moment, it felt like there was nothing more important than stopping the bloodshed.

Haley had been there, too. The root of the problem, the former governor said last month, was “the cancer that is mental health.”

“You can be mentally ill and hurt no one,” Hali imagined saying if they ever crossed paths again. “What makes you a threat is the gun.”

Her iPhone clock signaled it was nearly time for warm-ups, so she made her way over to the gym. Her volleyball team, the Koalas, had a new coach, and Hali didn’t know much about him yet — just that he’d come from Los Angeles.

She stepped onto the hardwood court, the first player here, and saw him emerge from his cinder block office.

“Hey, Hali!” he called out, and they started chatting about his move.

Drew Burdette, 35, was wondering if he could vote later this month in the primary. He’d lived in South Carolina a decade ago and might still be registered here as a Republican, he explained, but would back anyone against Trump.

“I like anybody who can find some way to make it harder to get guns,” Hali replied. “Make it so hard that people don’t even want a gun anymore.”

Her mother died, she told him, at Mother Emanuel.
