How to Write an IELTS Essay

In this introductory lesson you will find some guidance on how you should write an  IELTS essay .

There are then more lessons on the following pages for different types of essay and different questions, with lots of tips and strategies for achieving a high score.

You can also watch a video of this lesson:

Essay Types

It is important to learn about IELTS essays because there are different essay types, and these will require different ways to answer them.

However, as you will see from the guidance on this page, they can all follow the same basic structure.

These are some of the types of IELTS essays you can get in the test:

  • Agree / disagree
  • Discuss two opinions
  • Advantages & disadvantages
  • Causes (reasons) & solutions
  • Causes (reasons) & effects
  • Problems & solutions

Not every essay will fit one of these patterns, but many do.

You may get some of these tasks mixed up. For example, you could be asked to give your opinion on an issue, and then discuss the advantages or disadvantages of it.

The golden rule is to  ALWAYS read the question very carefully  to see exactly what you are being asked to do.

The second lesson explains more about analysing essay questions.

How do I Write an IELTS Essay?

In order to answer this, lets first look at a sample question:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

In the last 20 years there have been significant developments in the field of information technology (IT), for example the World Wide Web and communication by email. However, these developments in IT are likely to have more negative effects than positive in the future.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

An IELTS essay is structured like any other essay; you just need to make it shorter. There are three key elements:

  • Introduction
  • Body Paragraphs

We will look at each of these in turn, using the essay question above as an example.

1) Introduction

You should keep your introduction for the IELTS essay short. Remember you only have 40 minutes to write the essay, and some of this time needs to be spent planning. Therefore, you need to be able to write your introduction fairly quickly so you can start writing your body paragraphs.

You should do just two things:

  • State the topic of the essay, using some basic facts (that you may be able to take from the question)
  • Say what you are going to write about

Here is an example introduction for the above essay question about IT:

The last two decades have seen enormous changes in the way people's lives are affected by IT, with many advances in this field. However, while these technological advances have brought many benefits to the world, I strongly believe that these developments in IT will result in more negative impacts than positive.

As you can see, the first sentence makes sure it refers to the topic (IT) and uses facts about IT taken from the question. Note that these are paraphrased - you must not copy from the rubric!

The second part then clearly sets out the what the essay will be about and confirms the writers opinion (some questions may not ask for your opinion, but this one does). The writer clearly agrees as he/she thinks there will be more negative impacts.

View this lesson for more advice on writing IELTS essay introductions.

2) Body Paragraphs

For an IELTS essay, you should have 2 or 3 body paragraphs - no more, and no less.

For your body paragraph, each paragraph should contain one controlling idea, and have sentences to support this.

Lets look at the first paragraph for the essay about IT. The essay is about the benefits and drawbacks of IT, so these will need to be discussed in separate paragraphs.

Here is the first body paragraph:

On the positive side, email has made communication, especially abroad, much simpler and faster. This has resulted in numerous benefits for commerce and business as there is no need to wait weeks for letters or take time sending faxes, which was the case in the past. Furthermore, the World Wide Web means that information on every conceivable subject is now available to us. For example, people can access news, medical advice, online education courses and much more via the internet.  These developments have made life far easier and more convenient for many.

The controlling idea in this first paragraph is the 'benefits of IT', and there are two supporting ideas, which are underlined. No drawbacks are discussed as the paragraph would then lose coherence.

Most of the essay will focus on the negative aspects of IT, as the writer says there are more negative effects in the introduction. So the next two paragraphs are about these.

The topic sentence in the next paragraph therefore tells us we are changing the focus to the negative points:

Nevertheless, the effects of this new technology have not all been beneficial. For example, many people feel that the widespread use of email is destroying traditional forms of communication such as letter writing, telephone and face-to-face conversation. This could result in a decline in people's basic ability to socialize and interact with each other on a day-to-day basis.

The final body paragraph gives the last negative effect:

In addition, the large size of the Web has meant that it is nearly impossible to regulate and control. This has led to many concerns regarding children accessing unsuitable websites and the spread of computer viruses. Unfortunately, this kind of problem might even get worse in the future at least until more regulated systems are set up.

3) Conclusion

The conclusion only needs to be one or two sentences, and you can do the following:

  • Re-state what the essay is about (re-write the last sentence of your introduction in different words)
  • Give some thoughts about the future

Here is an example:

In conclusion, developments in IT have brought many benefits, yet I believe that these are outweighed by the drawbacks. In the future these will need to be addressed if we are to avoid damaging impacts on individuals and society.

The Full IELTS Essay

The last two decades have seen enormous changes in the way people's lives are affected by IT, with many advances in this field. However, while these technological advances have brought many benefits to the world, I strongly believe that these developments in IT will result in more negative impacts than positive.

(290 Words)

The IELTS essay introduction talks in general about the increasing use of IT, thus introducing the topic well. The thesis then clearly sets out the writers opinion.

The following paragraph mentions the present benefits of these developments, but the opening sentence in the third paragraph is a qualifying statement (Nevertheless, not all the effects... ), so the writer can now focus on the negative elements.

The fourth paragraph provides two other negative examples (lack of regulation, viruses). Both paragraphs suggest that these problems will continue in the future.

The essay concludes with a clear opinion that agrees with the statement.

Overall, it is a well-balanced text that mentions the present situation ( ...this has made life.. .) but importantly, also refers to the future of IT (. ..likely to increase..., might get worse. ..).

IELTS essay, topic: People are spending more and more time away from their families (reasons and effects)

  • IELTS Essays - Band 8

IELTS Model Essay Sample Band 8 February 2024

This essay topic was seen in a recent IELTS test in the UAE .

People in many countries are spending more and more time away from their families. Why is this happening? How does this affect people and their families?

Sample Band 8 Essay

The trend of individuals spending significantly less time with their families has become increasingly widespread and pronounced. I believe that this is mainly driven by career and academic endeavours and it has significant negative repercussions for both families and individuals.

examples of essay writing in ielts

One of the primary reasons for this phenomenon is the demanding and competitive nature of our modern professional lives. Due to this people find themselves working longer hours, to satisfy the requirements of their superiors and get ahead in their careers. In addition, the technology of today has made it possible to stay connected 24/7, and this often blurs the lines between work and personal life, leading to extended work hours. The ease of international travel for work and study has also significantly contributed to more people spending less time with their families. With the rise of global job and study opportunities, many relocate to different countries. For instance, the pursuit of higher education often requires studying in distant locations, causing young adults to spend years away from their families.

This increasing separation from family has profound negative effects on both individuals and families. On a personal level, a long absence from family can lead to feelings of isolation and stress, especially for young students who have never been away from home before. In terms of how this trend affects families, especially those with young children, lack of contact with a family member can impact emotional bonding and family dynamics. In the long run this could potentially cause a sense of detachment between certain family members that could be difficult to repair.

In conclusion, the growing trend of spending time away from family is driven by mainly professional and educational commitments. While this trend offers opportunities for professional growth and development, it challenges the traditional family structure and the emotional well-being of those separated from their loved ones.

Teacher’s feedback:

Overall, the essay is a good example of a Band 8 work.

Task Response: Band 8 The writer fully addresses the question, presenting a clear position throughout the response. He/she develops the argument with relevant, extended examples, such as the impact of global job and study opportunities on family time. The inclusion of specific examples, like the pursuit of higher education requiring relocation, enhances the argument by showing real-world implications of the trend.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8 The essay is well-organized, with clear progression of ideas. The use of cohesive devices is sophisticated, effectively managing the relationship between sentences and paragraphs. For example, transitions like “In addition” and “For instance” smoothly guide the reader through the argument, enhancing the logical flow of ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 8 The vocabulary is varied and appropriately used, with some less common words and phrases that are employed accurately. Terms such as “profound negative effects,” “emotional bonding,” and “sense of detachment” are used effectively to convey precise meanings. The essay demonstrates flexibility in language use without compromising clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8 The essay showcases a wide range of sentence structures, from simple to complex, with accurate use of grammar. The correct use of complex grammatical constructions, such as conditional sentences and relative clauses, contributes to the overall clarity and sophistication of the writing.

Criminal Justice

Some people believe that there should be fixed punishments for each type of crime. Others, however, argue that the circumstances of an individual crime, and the motivation for committing it, should always be taken into account when deciding on the punishment.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Some people believe that capital punishment should never be used. Others, however, argue that it should be allowed for the most serious crimes.

Some people believe the purpose of prison is to punish, while others would argue that rehabilitation is its primary role.

Some people feel unsafe when they are in public and at home.

What are the possible causes of this and what are some possible solutions?

Some people say that excessive noise should be a criminal offence, while others say they should be free to make noise without limitation.

Some people say that the best way to improve public health is by increasing the number of sports facilities. Others, however, say that this would have little effect on public health and that other measures are required.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

In some countries levels of health and fitness are decreasing and average weights are increasing.

What do you think are the causes of these problems and what are some possible solutions?

Research indicates that the characteristics we are born with have much more influence on our personality and development than any other experiences we may have in our life.

Which do you consider to be the major influence?

Schools should do more to teach students about their health and wellbeing.

Do you agree or disagree?

More and more schools allow fast-food restaurants to sell their products to their students.

Is it a positive or negative development?

University students must pay all tuition fees, because it benefits mostly them individually, rather than the society as a whole.

Do you agree or disagree?

Some say that music, art and drama are as important as other school subjects, especially at the primary level.

Some people believe that studying history is very important and we must study the past to understand the present. Others say that it is useless and should not be studied at all.

Some teachers tend to reward students who achieve high academic results. Others, however, support and reward students that show the most improvement.

Giving lectures in halls to large numbers of people is an outdated method of teaching. With the technology available today, there is no justification for it and everything should be done online.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In most universities students focus on specialised subjects, however, some people believe that universities should encourage students to study a wider variety of subjects.

It is generally believed that some people are born with certain talents, for instance for sport or music, and others are not. However, it is sometimes claimed that any child can be taught to become a good sports person or musician.

Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer.

What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a university?

Some parents think that childcare centres provide the best services for children of pre-school age. Other working parents think that family members such as grandparents will be better carers for their kids.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Governments should spend more money on education than on recreation and sports.

Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children).

Some people think that it is better to educate girls and boys in separate schools. Others, however, believe that boys and girls benefit more from attending mixed schools.

Some people think that parents should teach children how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe that school is the place to learn this.

Universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject.

In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?

Some people think that a sense of competition in children should be encouraged. Others believe that children who are taught to co-operate rather than compete become more useful adults.

Some people believe that children are given too much free time. They feel that this time should be used to do more academic work.

How do you think children should spend their free time?

In many countries schools have severe problems with student behaviour.

What do you think are the causes of this?

What solutions can you suggest?

University students should pay in full for their own education instead of the society funding their studies. The reason is that individuals tend to benefit after graduation more than society.

To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give your own opinion.

Some people believe that students should be allowed to evaluate and criticise their teachers to improve the quality of education. Others think this is disrespectful to teachers.

Discuss both views, give your opinion and include relevant examples.

Youth Crime

Nowadays many young people deliberately damage public places.

What are the causes and solutions?

Some people believe that a person’s criminal record should be removed when they reach the age of 18.

More and more young people are using drugs and alcohol and as a result, breaking the law.

What are the causes of this problem?

What are some possible solutions?

Children should never be put in prison with adults no matter how serious their crime.

Being a celebrity – such as a movie star or professional athlete – brings problems as well as benefits.

Do you think that being a celebrity has more benefits or drawbacks?

Some people feel that entertainers (e.g. film stars, pop musicians or sports stars) are paid too much money.

Which other types of job should be highly paid?

Successful sports professionals can earn much more money than people in other important jobs. Some people think this is fully justified while others think it is unfair.

Environment

There is a growing demand for fresh water nowadays and this is becoming a global problem.

Many people think that too much attention and resources are given to the protection of wild animals and birds.

Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems.

What other measures do you think might be effective?

Nowadays we are producing more and more waste.

What are the causes of this?

What can be done to help reduce the amount of waste we produce?

Many people believe that companies and individuals should pay to clean up the environment in proportion to the amount of pollution they have produced.

Global warming is the biggest threat we face today.

Children today are too dependent on computers and electronic entertainment. It would be better to encourage them to spend more time outside playing sports and games.

Some people say that public libraries are an important public resource and should be free. Others say that they are just a waste of public money.

Some people think that excessive use of smartphones badly affects teenagers’ literacy skills.

The internet contains a lot of information that can help people, however, sometimes the information is inaccurate or wrong.

Nowadays the way many people interact with each other has changed because of technology.

In what ways has technology affected the types of relationships people make?

Has this become a positive or negative development?

Computers have made the world a better place to live in.

Some people believe that the use of mobile phones in public is as annoying as smoking and should be banned.

Most high-level positions in companies are filled by men even though the workforce in many developed countries is more than 50 percent female. Companies should be required to allocate a certain percentage of these positions to women.

Nowadays more and more people have to compete with young people for the same jobs.

What problems does this cause?

Women and men are commonly seen as having different strengths and weaknesses.

Is it right to exclude males or females from certain professions because of their gender?

As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important element of individual wellbeing.

What factors contribute to job satisfaction?

How realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction for all workers?

Some people think that people in senior positions alone should make decisions in a business, while others think that employees should be involved in the decision-making process too.

Nowadays many people work part- or full-time from home. Some people say that working from home has many benefits while others disagree.

For some people a high salary is the most important criterion when choosing a new job while others are satisfied if the job contributes to society.

Globalisation

In many places, traditional food has been replaced by international fast food. This has adverse effects on individuals and society.

More and more people are visiting historic sites and sometimes tourists damage these ancient sites. The number of people visiting these places should be strictly limited.

Shopping has developed from a necessary activity to a kind of entertainment.

Many small businesses are being forced to close because they are unable to compete with multinational corporations.

What problems does this cause and how can those problems be solved?

Multinational companies are becoming increasingly common in developing countries.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?

Government Spending

People prefer to watch foreign films rather than locally produced ones.

Why do you think this happens? Should the government support local filmmakers financially?

Some people think that governments should invest more in public services instead of wasting money on arts such as music and paintings.

Some people believe that the government should pay for and offer to house people who lost their homes or cannot afford them.

Some people think that the government should fund music, dance and art lessons for children. Others think that they should be funded by private businesses or by children’s families.

Many people think that the government should spend money to explore outer space, while others think that it’s a waste of public money.

Some people think that mothers should spend most of their time raising their family, and therefore the government should support them financially.

Development

In some countries, the numbers of children aged 15 and younger are increasing dramatically.

What are the current and future effects of an ever-increasing population?

A recent study showed that people in developed countries are not as happy as they were before development.

What are the causes of this and what are some possible solutions?

Sometimes celebrities get invited to international aid events.

Do you think that such events deviate from their main purpose by inviting famous people?

Some people believe that richer countries should give poorer countries more financial assistance.

Some people believe that no aid should be given to developing countries that have poor human rights records.

Public Transport

Some people think that a car is the best way to travel in cities while others believe a bicycle is a better way to commute.

Many cities have serious problems with traffic congestion.

What are the causes of these problems and what are some possible solutions?

Growing numbers of cities are making their centres pedestrian-only zones.

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Some people believe that the best way to reduce traffic congestion is to increase the price of petrol.

Every year several languages die out. Some people think that it is not important because life will be easier if there are fewer languages in the world.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

It is becoming increasingly popular for people to travel to tourist destinations during public holidays.

What solutions are there to these problems?

Today, the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society in which they are sold.

Some people believe that visitors to other countries should follow local customs and behaviour. Others disagree and think that the host country should welcome cultural differences.

At present, the media affects people’s lives significantly.

What impact does this have on society? Is it a negative or positive development?

Young people say that travelling to different countries benefits them and society.

Do you agree or disagree? Give your opinion.

These days, more fathers stay at home and take care of their children while mothers go out to work.

What are the main reasons for this? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

However, it’s important that you use them wisely. Simply reading through them won’t improve your skills or your score. When using IELTS Writing sample essays, I always recommend following my ___ step strategy:

  • Start off by reading the question – NOT the answer.
  • Attempt to answer the question under exam conditions.
  • Compare your letter with the sample answer.
  • Improve your original answer by using some of the elements you noticed in the sample letter. Eg. how did the writer use structure, vocabulary and grammar?

There are 5 main categories of essays that you may come across in IELTS writing task 2. We are discussing the various types of IELTS essay writing samples which will help in both General Training as well as Academic Writing task 2. Mentioned below are some of the IELTS essay samples and types.

  • Discussion essay (Discuss both views essay)
  • Agree/disagree essay (Opinion essay)
  • Advantage/disadvantage essay
  • Problem/solution essay
  • Two-part question essay (Direct question essay)

Table of Contents

Download e-books for ielts preparation, internet affecting social interaction, working from home, overpopulation, two-part question essay, ielts essay writing topics, 1) opinion essay structure (agree or disagree), 2) advantages and disadvantages type- ielts essay structure, 3) discussion essay, 4) problem and solution essay, 5) two part questions essay, study for ielts with upgrad abroad, frequently asked questions, study master programs in usa, discussion essay.

In this essay type, there are two opinions and each has to be discussed. Apart from these, the writer’s opinion also has to be mentioned. The topic of the sample essay is Childcare.

The first opinion supports that preschool children should stay with grandparents and be taken care of. The second supports children of this age should stay at childcare centres. In the third paragraph, you can mention your opinion.

Discuss both the opinions and provide your view.

Since the majority of the parents these days go to work, it becomes quite confusing to take care of children who are too young to go to school. Some say children of this age should stay with their grandparents. One of the main reasons for this is that they are staying with family members and will be safer than staying with people who barely know them. Grandparents will get time to connect with the children and instil good habits. It is believed by some that children who stay with their grandparents are kinder towards others. One of the important points is also cost-saving. Most good childcare facilities charge a lot of money. This may put an extra financial burden on the parents.

Others believe that children of this age should be sent to childcare facilities. This will make them independent from a very young age. The staff at the centres are properly trained and capable of taking care of the children. Children can also socialize with other children at the facility. Children who stay at childcare facilities are more disciplined. They are taught several activities such as painting, storytelling, singing, dancing, and various other activities that boost their creativity.

I think young children should be sent to childcare facilities that provide safety.  They can spend time with their grandparents when they are at home. Disciplining children from a tender age is important, which becomes easier by sending them to childcare facilities. Childcare facilities can also prepare students for school and get them habituated with a certain routine from an early age.

Agree/Disagree Essay

In this essay type, you either have to agree with the mentioned opinion or disagree. You have to mention points that do justice to your view. The sample topic for this essay type is the Internet affecting social interaction.

Some reports say, people now use the internet more and spend less time in the real world. Some say that more than doing good, the internet is affecting the social interaction of human beings.

Do you agree with this opinion?

How far do you agree with this opinion?

The Internet is a wonderful tool that can be used for various purposes these days. From booking your tickets to ordering your favorite pizza, you can do almost everything from the comfort of your home. All that you need is an internet connection. However, one of the major disadvantages of the internet is that it is affecting our social interaction. These days, not only the young generation but even the elderly people have an account on almost every social media platform. It majorly helps people stay connected with others, even the ones who live in faraway places. Nevertheless, people are so much into virtual interaction that they hardly meet their friends.

These days, we can find people who live in the same city but prefer meeting their friends on video calls. We do not realize it but it affects us emotionally. We try to look perfect in our social media accounts but deep down we feel lonely and separated. The friends that we used to meet in person and chat with for hours can now only be seen in video calls for only a limited amount of time. This has also started keeping us away from people who we would have to contact in times of need.

To conclude, I would like to mention that the internet indeed is a powerful tool. We all need the internet regularly. However, we also need to balance our life and spare some time to socialize with people we love. This will not only help us connect better with others but also make our mood much better.

Advantage/disadvantage Essay

You will have a topic and you have to mention both its advantages as well as disadvantages. Let us take the sample essay topic “Working from Home”.

Working from home these days is the new way of working.

Does it come with more advantages or disadvantages?

‘Work from Home’ seems to be the new mantra of professional life. The ongoing pandemic has taught us many things and one of those is working from home. Although it is a new concept for many, it has been accepted well. Let us discuss the advantages as well as disadvantages of working from home.

One of the biggest advantages of working from home is for the mothers who have toddlers at home. Earlier, many career-oriented mothers had to take a break from their job to raise their children. This would sometimes lead to missing out on several job opportunities. However, the concept of working from home has been a boon to those mothers. The other advantages are that you can be around your family, have your meals on time, and won't have to drive in the busy hours to make it to your office. This has not only helped us save our time but money as well. You can work while relaxing at home.

While there are so many advantages of working from home, one of the biggest disadvantages is that you are not connecting with your colleagues anymore. You do not know who they are. It has also made our life sedentary as all we do is sit in our chairs and stare at our laptops.

While there are both pros and cons of working from home, even if you are into it, you need to make sure you are exercising enough. If you are an outgoing individual, you must think twice before choosing a work-from-home profile.

Problem/Solution Essay

It is one of the most common types of questions and is great for IELTS essay writing samples. You will get a question that would provide you with a topic. The question will point to a problem. You have to discuss the problem and then come up with solutions. Let us take the sample topic “Overpopulation”.

Overpopulation is giving rise to many problems in urban areas.

Discuss some problems and suggest solutions on how the government and individuals can deal with the issues.

Overpopulation is a common yet concerning problem in many countries. The urban areas in many countries are mostly overpopulated. One of the main problems that come with a lot of people in one city is the shortage of job opportunities, lesser options for good accommodation, littering, and crime. It is true that regions with a high population have a stronger and deep-rooted presence of crime.

As we talk about the solutions to all the problems that arise because of overpopulation, we should address these to the government. It is the government of the country that is responsible for such situations. They should provide the necessary accommodation and healthcare for citizens who migrate to cities for work. To control crime, there need to be more job opportunities. Government can set up evening classes for the teenagers so that they can be involved in studies rather than spending their time roaming around in the city. The government also should add manpower to the police force so that they can patrol more in the inner as well as outer urban areas.

Apart from the government, as citizens, it is our responsibility also to keep the city clean and crime in check. If we see or know about any crime happening in our neighborhood, we must inform the police about it. We can also put pressure on the government to take better actions against criminals.

Overpopulation is a serious problem that should not be neglected. If the government and the citizens work together towards it, we will be able to find a proper solution to the problem.

A two-part question essay is also called a Direct Question essay. You will be asked two direct questions and you have to answer them in one essay. The questions can be:

So many people move to countries with native language English to pursue their education at school, college, or university.

Why is the English language so important?

Why are people so inclined to study the English language?

Countries such as the USA, UK, and Australia are English-speaking countries and also some of the top educational destinations in the world. In this essay, I will discuss why so many people are interested in this language and even want to study it.

English is one of the most common languages spoken in the world. The majority of the developed nations have English as their native language. This language has also made it easier for people to get high-paying jobs in some of the best companies located in various corners of the world. Many multinational companies offer jobs to people who can speak English. Most people study in English so that they can get a well-paid job or improve their career graph. Another reason is traveling. People who do not understand or speak English can find it difficult to travel across the world. they can especially find it difficult to communicate in the airports.

Apart from getting a decent job and traveling across the globe, English is also used as an international language. If we consider scientific research, most of them are conducted in English. This specific language is chosen for this purpose so that the research can be published for a global audience. If there is no global audience, it can be very difficult for scientists to finance themselves.

English is spoken in those countries as well where the native language is something else. If we are well-versed with this language, it becomes easier for us to communicate with others. These are some of the reasons why so many people are interested in learning this language.

Therefore, we can conclude by mentioning that studying in English-speaking countries also makes it easier for people to learn the language and get better job opportunities.

Preparation for the IELTS Exam

Writing examples in IELTS essays.

How to write examples in ielts essay body paragraphs..

Updated: January 2023

In IELTS writing task 2 it is very important to be able to extend your ideas and support your main idea in the body paragraphs. This can be done with supporting points and specific examples. This is necessary to get a good band score in task response and helps with the overall cohesion of the essay.

By using examples the examiner can see how you are developing your main idea in the main body paragraphs. However, the examples given must be specific to the task question and your main idea, and they should also be clear, easy to follow, concise, and realistic looking, but never include statistics.

They do not have to be real but they must look plausible. This is different from an essay you would write at University where you need true factual information and citations. IELTS essays are not the same as University essays.

1. What does the marking criteria say?

In the IELTS marking criteria, there is no mention of giving examples but in task response it says:

Band 8 task response: ‘presents a well-developed response to the question with relevant, extended, and supported ideas.’ Band 7 task response: ‘ presents, extends and supports main ideas , but there may be a tendency to overgeneralise and/or supporting ideas may lack focus.’ Band 6 Task response: ‘presents relevant main ideas but some may be inadequately developed/unclear.’

So, if your main idea is not explained and supported then you will end up with a lower band score in task response.

2. Where is the best place to put the example?

When giving examples it is best to put them after your main idea or topic sentence. They can be used in the middle of supporting sentences or they can be used to start a new sentence. There is no rule for where exactly to give examples in essays. Logically they should come just after a supporting sentence. In many of my model answers, they are near the end of the main body paragraph.

For instance here is a paragraph from an essay based on this task question:

Students today can easily access information online, so libraries are no longer necessary. Do you agree or disagree? Even though it is true that students find it much easier to get specific academic information connected to their studies on the internet, I believe that libraries are still essential in schools and universities as well as public library facilities. One reason for this is that some types of specialised information cannot be found on the internet. For instance , most well-known academic authors do not immediately publish their recent work online, instead, they publish books explaining their analyses and results . Therefore these books are usually found in university or school libraries before they appear on the world wide web.

The example is introduced with ‘For instance’. The example supports my main opinion here, although it is not entirely true it looks realistic.

3. What kind of example should it be?

Personal examples should be avoided if possible as they look informal. You can quote a newspaper report, a government report, a survey, a poll, a magazine article, a research project but be careful as this can sometimes make the example look like a cliche. You can make examples up but they must look realistic and should not have percentages or data as the examiner has no way to check this.

The prevention of health problems and illness is more important than treatment and medicine. Government funding should reflect this. To what extent do you agree or disagree? In many nations, there is a desperate need for government investment in healthcare, especially for research into new types of medicine to combat serious conditions such as Parkinson’s disease. If governments around the world had funding for cures and drugs at the top of their agenda, then I believe that many more terrible illnesses could be cured with cutting-edge medicine within the next decade. For example, research has shown that in the USA there have been huge advances in the treatment of Parkinson’s with new types of medicine, which was the result of many years of investment by successive administrations.

In the example above I have not quoted any years or statistics. It looks plausible and most importantly it connects directly to my main idea.

4. Useful language when referring to research

If possible try giving an example that does not use fake research or a government survey as this can look memorised and cliched. However, if you cannot think of a good example you could reference a research project or a study that seems plausible. In that case, it is a good idea to use this kind of language below.

A study carried out showed that…

Research conducted recently indicated that…, there is evidence to suggest that…, according to a recent poll…, according to a recent research project, it emerged that…, an extensive survey conducted by the government proved that….

Example sentences: For instance, there is evidence to suggest that eating fast foods and a high sugar intake causes obesity. For example, according to a recent poll by the government, an increasing number of people are working from home now. To illustrate this, research conducted recently stated that more and more companies are looking at reducing the workforce in favour of Ai and robots.

5. What should be in the example?

In the example, you can use a business name, a university name, a newspaper name, a place (country, city) and a phrase that shows a trend. Do not use statistics and numbers in examples . See two examples below I took from an essay.

1.  For instance, a recent report in Business weekly magazine indicated that the number of shoppers making purchases online has risen considerably due to low costs and free delivery. 2.  For instance, a recent report in Business weekly magazine indicated that the number of shoppers making purchases online has risen by 61% due to low costs and free delivery.

The first one is much better as it uses language rather than a statistic . In the example I used a magazine name (business weekly)  This example is not true but it looks believable.

Here are other examples, which one is better?

1.  To illustrate this, a UK government report in April 2017 showed that over 59% of criminals reoffended within 2 years of being released from prison. 2. To illustrate this, a UK government report in April 2017 showed that a large proportion of criminals reoffended within 2 years of being released from prison. 3. To illustrate this, a recent UK government report showed that a large proportion of criminals reoffended soon after being released from prison.

In the third example above I have not used any numbers, years or statistics. I have used language instead. The first two examples should be avoided as the examiner cannot check this data and it looks fake to the examiner.

Using statistics and data in examples is only for when you are writing a university essay/thesis not an IELTS essay.

6. Can you give an example of a “bad example” and a good one?

Take a look at two example body paragraphs below…which one is better?

An increasing number of people are buying what they need online.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of this? 1. One main advantage of purchasing online is that it is much cheaper than buying from a high street shop. This means that buying items such as books, clothes and household goods is much more cost-effective if consumers get them on the internet because of the wide range of shopping sites. For instance, transport is expensive as gasoline prices are increasing. Most people do not have cars in my town so we have to take a train 10 kilometres to the nearest department store, so it is better to buy online. 2 . One main advantage of purchasing online is that it is much cheaper than buying from a high street shop. This means that buying items such as books, clothes and household goods is much more cost-effective if consumers get them on the internet because of the wide range of shopping sites. To illustrate this, there is evidence to suggest  that the number of shoppers making purchases on Amazon has risen considerably due to low costs and free delivery.

The 2nd paragraph above is better. The first paragraph example is too general and even seems informal. The 2nd paragraph example is much clearer, more specific, and concise while supporting my main idea.

7. What should I do if I have no idea of an example?

In this case, you can make up an example. Invent a government poll, a newspaper report, a university study, or just explain your main idea clearly. There is no rule in the IELTS marking criteria about how to give examples, only that you can explain and support your ideas. Remember the marking criteria state:

presents a well-developed response to the question with relevant, extended, and supported ideas’

Take a look at this paragraph below:

Some people think that violent sports such as martial arts or boxing should be banned from international competitions. To what extent do you agree or disagree? I agree that worldwide martial arts or combat events should be banned is that many competitors in these kinds of sports retire with long-lasting health issues. Boxing, in particular, has many instances of great boxers who became brain damaged and had to stop boxing at a relatively young age. For example, Mohamed Ali, who was an Olympic and world champion, developed brain damage from years of high-profile international fights and developed serious health problems such as Parkinson’s disease. There are many other cases similar to this in world combat sports events.

The example does not include any newspaper report or university study or government poll etc… there are no statistics, no business name, no dates but it still clearly supports my main opinion that combat sports should be banned.

To Summarise.

Stick to one main idea in each paragraph and explain it without going off-topic, the main idea must be relevant and specific to the task question. Keep it simple and concise too and avoid statistics or data that the examiner cannot verify.

How to Put Examples in an IELTS Essay

Today, you are going to learn how to put examples in an IELTS essay . Specifically, this will be a task 2 essay because you won’t need examples in a task 1 report or letter.

We will cover a few things here. Firstly, I will explain why you ought to include examples. Then, I’ll talk about picking appropriate examples. Finally, we will look at the language used for giving examples in an essay.

Table of Contents

Why do we need examples, what makes a good example for an ielts essay, can you make up examples, can i use personal examples, what language is used for giving examples, common mistakes.

In an IELTS essay, you might want to include examples as a way of better explaining something. Whether you are giving your opinion or discussing an idea, examples are often a handy way of showing development, which is critical for a good Task Response score.

Let’s say you have to write an essay about animal experimentation . You might want to explain that animal testing cannot be justified, so one of your paragraphs might be structured this way:

Look at sentence #7.

Why did I add this?

Well, I had previously explained my perspective in a clear way, but to make it even easier for the reader to understand (as well as making a more convincing argument), I can add an example.

Examples often illuminate a concept in a clear way. They help people to understand abstract or challenging ideas better. In the above case, I had explained my opinion logically but by giving a concrete idea – something that the reader could imagine – I have made it more likely that they will understand and agree with me.

(You can read the full essay and an explanation here .)

Also, let’s consider what the examiners actually want. Note the highlighted part of this sample question from IDP :

This quite clearly shows that you are meant to provide examples. The band descriptors provided by the British Council also show that it is necessary for a candidate to “support” their ideas in order to get a good score. To get band 8, a candidate’s ideas must be:

relevant, well extended and supported.

A good example in an IELTS essay should be:

  • Intelligent
  • Carefully placed

Those are the most important facts. Let’s look at each.

  • Relevant . Above, I gave an example that illuminated my main point. I wanted to show why animal testing can be flawed, so I created a hypothetical mouse being subjected to testing for diabetes drugs. This perfectly illustrated the point, so it is relevant.
  • Realistic . A lot of people make up examples because of course you cannot do research in the middle of the IELTS exam. This is fine but please keep it realistic . For example, you may be asked about climate change. If you said “a recent study shows that 90% of the world will be underwater in 10 years,” then it is not very credible.
  • Intelligent . Although your answers for IELTS writing do not need to display any sort of technical expertise, you do need to display some sort of critical thinking ability. Thus, whilst you don’t need to have an in-depth knowledge of history or technology , you should be able to draw upon some reasonable examples or invent one that sounds believable. These should be logically tied to your main idea and fit nicely into your essay.
  • Carefully placed . Your example should come at just the right point in your essay. Where is that? Well, it depends on your essay. Each one is different. Typically, you would state a main point, explain it, and then add an example but there are other ways to do this. Just be logical and use an example for a sensible purpose. This will help you get a better score for Coherence and Cohesion .

Here, we can see the two body paragraphs of an essay about reliance on technology .

examples of essay writing in ielts

You can see that both paragraphs include an example but they are included differently. The first does not use the words “For example” or “To illustrate.” It just gives the example subtly. The second uses more formulaic language but it introduces the example in a more interesting place. This is because I wanted to incorporate the example in my explanation rather than illustrate the explanation entirely by following it with an example.

As you can see, there are various ways to do this effectively!

Yes, you can use invented examples but keep in mind that they must be realistic. There are two ways to do this:

  • Make up an example that is easily within the realm of possibility. For example, you might cite a study that does not exist but as long as your claims are realistic, it doesn’t matter. No one is going to check.
  • State clearly that it is a hypothetical example. Again, you can use my mouse/diabetes example from the above table. I used the word “if” to show that it was an imagined example situation.

Try to avoid saying anything that is obviously fake or unbelievable. This would reduce the credibility of your argument.

You can use personal examples in an IELTS essay, but these tend to be more common in lower-scoring essays. Of course, for these you could easily make up an imaginary brother or friend to illustrate a situation.

It all depends on the situation, of course. If you are asked about a broad societal question, an example such as “my brother thinks…” does not really demonstrate any sort of capacity for serious thinking. Thus, you can do it but it’s not a great idea.

On the other hand, if you are asked about families or other daily or personal topics, you could definitely give your relatives as examples.

There are different ways to introduce an example. The most common one is to say “For example…” and then state the example. Many people think this is “too basic,” but there’s no such thing. As long as you don’t use it repeatedly, you’re fine.

Other phrases to introduce examples include:

  • To give an example
  • For instance
  • To give but one example (=this implies that you are giving one but that there are many other possible examples)
  • As an illustration
  • To illustrate

It’s also quite possible to just subtly weave an example into the passage without this sort of formulaic language. Let’s take a sample passage:

  • There are many everyday items that are used once and then thrown away, adding to the pollution in our seas. For example, plastic bags and soda bottles routinely end up flowing from rivers into the oceans.

This passage used “for example.” We could also have just said:

  • There are many everyday items that are used once and then thrown away, adding to the pollution in our seas. Plastic bags and soda bottles routinely end up flowing from rivers into the oceans.

Now I have included an example but without saying “For example…”

Note that I could also use “such as…” This requires slightly different grammar, though:

  • There are many everyday items, such as plastic bottles and bags, that are used once and then thrown away, adding to the pollution in our seas.

A final note is that the phrase “For example” can be placed at different points in a sentence:

  • For example, plastic bags and soda bottles routinely end up flowing from rivers into the oceans.
  • Plastic bags and soda bottles, for example, routinely end up flowing from rivers into the oceans.
  • Plastic bags and soda bottles routinely end up flowing from rivers into the oceans, for example.

Let’s now look at a few common mistakes people make when putting examples into their IELTS essays:

  • Too many examples . Having one or two examples in an essay is fine but you definitely don’t want to include many more than that. Remember that an example is used to illuminate a point but it should not be used as a shortcut. Learn how to explain an idea and then back it up with an example rather than using examples in lieu of a thorough explanation.
  • Irrelevant examples . I quite often see irrelevant examples in IELTS essays when doing my writing correction service . Basically, there is a logical disconnect between the previous statement and the given example.
  • Unclear examples . Sometimes people just don’t explain things clearly, so the example given may seem irrelevant or confusing. This is often not because it’s a bad example but rather the example or the previous point had been poorly explained.
  • Poor grammar . People sometimes make grammatical mistakes when adding an example. This happens because they do not understand the part of speech used to introduce the example or they forget that the example may have to be a full clause.

Benefits and drawbacks of studying abroad – part a.

Education is indeed the foundation for a student to build their future. Some students prefer to pursue their studies outside the country, while others want to complete their studies in their homeland. Without question, studying overseas has its advantages and disadvantages. There are many reasons which will be discussed further in this essay. Personally, I firmly believe that the advantages are far more than the disadvantages.

Also Read:- CELPIP vs IELTS: Contrast to Know between CELPIP and IELTS Tests

One main advantage of studying abroad is coming together with students from different cultures and customs of other countries. When a student travels to another country for study, they will be completely exposed to unknown traditions and cultures of foreign people. As a result, they will imbibe the valuable aspects of such customs when returning to their homeland.

Another significant advantage of studying abroad is the enormous benefits a student gets in their majors. They will meet the top professors and academics from whom they will acquire good knowledge and experience. Moreover, their immense knowledge and experience will subsequently contribute to the growth and development of their own country.

On the other side, we can see that travelling abroad has some negative effects on the students. Some of which can be noted as getting involved in illegal activities like taking drugs, which we have been seeing in students moving abroad lately. Such bad habits might deviate students from their original goals, morals, and traditions. However, these issues mainly depend on the students themselves.

Further, there are a few small issues: adapting to new life, weather, environment, and staying independent. If a student can overcome these issues, they will mostly have a smooth run.

To conclude, studying abroad has both pros and cons. However, as clearly stated above, the advantages are more prominent. However, if you intend to study overseas, you should pick out the beneficial merits and habits from that country and abstain from the ugly habits and customs.

IELTS Essay Samples 2 for Band 9

Causes and solutions for decreasing quality life in larger cities – part a.

The concept of urbanisation from the beginning of industrialisation to the present day has brought in many opportunities and prosperity, although at a cost of quality life. With an increase in the city population, the complexity of life and its challenges also increase. The causes and solutions for this are outlined below.

The leading causes for the decline in the quality of life are the difference in expenditure and income in such metropolitan centres. Their growth is mainly due to the increase in the opportunities that metros offer, which, in turn, increases the attractiveness of city life, and people are essentially trapped in a positive, self-reinforcing cycle.

However, this further leads to a decrease in the quality of life as the city will then experience overcrowding, higher property prices, and increased risk of and vulnerability to terrorist attacks. For example, the population or the density of London makes it easier to be attacked when compared to a relatively smaller city, such as Bradford.

Therefore, metro citizens, especially the less financially stable people, often experience a decline in the standard of living due to continuous growth and prosperity.

Considering the solutions to this, there must be a greater investment in public transport. This would ease higher traffic, so would bike lanes. In theory, this will have many benefits like reducing air pollution and possibly improving the population’s quality of life if they adopt a more active lifestyle and probably cycle to work.

To counter violent terrorist attacks, cities could invest mainly in CCTV installations, which will help closely monitor the threats. For example, it is said that the CCTVs in London have foiled many potential attacks and, in turn, significantly increased the safety and security of its citizens.

In conclusion, a wealthy city attracts the inflow of a large population, which then causes pressure on existing infrastructure, opportunities, and security. There are various solutions to mitigate such drawbacks. Nevertheless, an ultimate solution to all the drawbacks is yet to be found.

IELTS General Essay Sample 3

Is wealth a guarantee to happiness – part a.

Several people believe that money is the key to happiness, and in fact, they think that the more money you have, the happier you become. In contrast, others believe that having a lot of money is the root cause for more problems than the number of problems it solves. I believe that as long as people have enough money for basic amenities like food, health, and a safe place to live, all of the surplus money left tends to make life less more complicated than content.

There are many reasons to justify this. First of all, having a great deal of money means there is no real reason to go out to work or to strive for anything. Next, wealthy people often tend to attract the wrong lot of people. After a while, the rich people start to believe that the people around them are certainly after only one thing, to have a share in their money. This makes rich people more distrustful even to those good, trustworthy, and loyal people who happen to be their genuine friends.

One more result of having plenty of money comes with the fear of losing it. Rich people tend to build high walls around themselves and invest in top-notch tech security systems to keep their wealth away from the rest of the world. They also behave snobbishly with anyone they meet; they are always suspicious that the poor people around them are potential thieves or con artists.

For all the above and many other reasons, I feel that having a great deal of money does not bring happiness, but the opposite of happiness. It makes people lose sight of the real sources of happiness, which are more often simple things like family and friendship. Wealth prevents people from seeing the actual value and potential of things, only recognising what they cost.

Sample Essay 4

Technology has become increasingly responsible for unemployment – part a.

Technological advancements always had an impact on people at work. In some cases, people are no longer necessary in their job as technological tools replace them, but sometimes they make our work easier. We can define technology as scientific knowledge tools used for practical purposes in most industries and commerce. I would also like to make a clear distinction between low and high technology, which is electronic or information technology.

In my personal view, technology really began to affect industries in the early part of the 20th century. The result of this was that certain industries, like the automobile industry, did not really need as many people as earlier, as automated machines and robots could do jobs, such as painting a car or assembling the car more easily in less time.

However, if we turn around to look at the effect of high technology in the workplace, there has been a different effect. It is undoubtedly true that computers can do some things that people used to do, and advances in high technology have made people’s lives better than before with the improvement in communication.

For example, we now have e-mail, the internet, and some electronic applications to chat with friends and business partners away from us. In addition to this, people working in service-based industries like banking use computers much more than pen and paper nowadays. With technology, some work can now be done from home, which means that people do not need to spend so much time travelling and can work wherever and whenever they intend to.

In conclusion, technology has precisely resulted in unemployment in some traditional industries like that of the car industry. On the other hand, other industries such as service industries have seen an improvement in the way they work only because of advancements in technology.
