Have You Ever Worried About Making a Good First Impression?

In a winning essay for our 2019 Personal Narrative Contest, a teenager writes about wanting to make the right impression on her first day in a new school. Do first impressions matter, or are they overrated?

What can you learn about yourself from these first encounters?

In “ First Impressions ,” a winning essay from our 2019 Personal Narrative Contest for students, Isabel Hui writes about a time when she hoped to make a good impression — and what she learned about herself from it. Her narrative reads:

When I woke up on August 4, 2016, there was only one thing on my mind: what to wear. A billion thoughts raced through my brain as wooden hangers shuffled back and forth in the cramped hotel closet. I didn’t want to come off as a try-hard, but I also didn’t want to be seen as a slob. Not only was it my first day of high school, but it was my first day of school in a new state; first impressions are everything, and it was imperative for me to impress the people who I would spend the next four years with. For the first time in my life, I thought about how convenient it would be to wear the horrendous matching plaid skirts that private schools enforce. It wasn’t insecurity driving me to madness; I was actually quite confident for a teenage girl. It was the fact that this was my third time being the new kid. Moving so many times does something to a child’s development … I struggled finding friends that I could trust would be there for me if I picked up and left again. But this time was different because my dad’s company ensured that I would start and finish high school in the same place. This meant no instant do-overs when I pick up and leave again. This time mattered, and that made me nervous. After meticulously raiding my closet, I emerged proudly in a patterned dress from Target. The soft cotton was comfortable, and the ruffle shoulders added a hint of fun. Yes, this outfit was the one. An hour later, I felt just as powerful as I stepped off the bus and headed toward room 1136. But as I turned the corner into my first class, my jaw dropped to the floor. Sitting at her desk was Mrs. Hutfilz, my English teacher, sporting the exact same dress as I. I kept my head down and tiptoed to my seat, but the first day meant introductions in front of the whole class, and soon enough it was my turn. I made it through my minute speech unscathed, until Mrs. Hutfilz stood up, jokingly adding that she liked my style. Although this was the moment I had been dreading from the moment I walked in, all the anxiety that had accumulated throughout the morning surprisingly melted away; the students who had previously been staring at their phones raised their heads to pay attention as I shared my story. My smile grew as I giggled with my peers, ending my speech with “and I am very stylish, much like my first period teacher.” After class, I stayed behind and talked to Mrs. Hutfilz, sharing my previous apprehension about coming into a new school and state. I was relieved to make a humorous and genuine connection with my first teacher, one that would continue for the remainder of the year. This incident reminded me that it’s only high school; these are the times to have fun, work hard, and make memories, not stress about the trivial details. Looking back four years later, the ten minutes I spent dreading my speech were really not worth it. While my first period of high school may not have gone exactly the way I thought it would, it certainly made the day unforgettable in the best way, and taught me that Mrs. Hutfilz has an awesome sense of style!

Many middle school kids compare high school to the various movies that have been made to represent what it is like. Most of the movies that I have watched have not done a good job showing what high school really is.

My first impression when I first entered high school was that I will probably be in classes with most of my friends and know a lot of the kids in my grade, unfortunately I was wrong. When I got to school in the morning on the first day I realized how large the school was, and how many students went there. The size of the school alone was intimidating, and very easy to get lost in.

When I got to my first class I had not a single friend in the class, and I only vaguely recognized two or three people (now when I get to classes every day I realize how many new friends I have made). I also did not realize how many middle school students matriculated from.

Stress is one word that I would use describe high school with. Stress, I used to think that I knew what stress was but now I realize that I didn’t. Within the first two weeks of school I was already swamped with homework, tests/quizzes, and essays. Before high school I had a pop quiz maybe once, but now I am having them every week!

I did not know my backpack could carry so much, because I have had to stuff it with all my textbooks, binders, spirals, dictionaries, and a bunch of random papers. My backpack feels like it has 50 bricks inside it!

In middle school I used to always have so much free time, and now if I ever get time to myself it is cherished. I have never been so tired in my life because in middle school my homework used to just an hour. Now, I am doing homework from when I get home until five or six at night.

I always underestimated how hard it would be to get into my dream college, Yale, but now I idolize the people whom have gotten in and the work they must have done to get in. But, no amount of work/effort will stop me from trying to get in. Whenever I was absent from school I used to enjoy sleeping in and not having to do any work, but now I would come to school with a broken neck just so I don’t have to miss anything.

Although there are some downsides to high school, there are also some positive things that come with it. In middle school one was basically in a cage with only a limited amount of freedom and now in high school one is able to be free to do what ever floats their boat.

I am loving the way that teachers treat students as adults and don’t speak to me like I am a 6-year-old. One of the best part of high school is the millions of clubs offered ranging from a Great Films Club to a community service club.

One of the main things keeping me going in high school is the thought of college and learning new things. All I can think to myself is, “Ace this test for Yale,” or “Go above and beyond on this essay for college.”

I look forward to each day of school because I know that there is more information for me to acquire and sometimes mistakes to learn from. I always keep any comment or suggestion, from a teacher or student, in the back of my mind to help me in the future.

One of the most important parts of high school is the knowledge you gain and the friends you make.

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it,” this is the most high-school relatable quote that Ferris Bueller says in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” This was the one bit of advice people gave me that stood out; enjoy high school and don’t just stress too much about it.

What are the first impressions in your school(s)?

What do you see when you first walk into a school? Every week I visit several schools in this or other states. The differences are dramatic. First impressions and important, whether for individual or an institution, I think what a school chooses to display in its “front hall” or entry area tells you a lot about what the school values most.

Some schools, whether elementary, middle or high school, focus on pictures of young people who are excellent athletes. I’ve walked into a number of schools that feature pictures of young people have been named “all conference” or “all state,” or have helped the school win an athletic championship.

Some schools have pictures that display a broader range of accomplishment. In these schools, a visitor encounters young people who have won art, agriculture, dance, drama, math, music, history, science, spelling or special education competitions, as well as those who are outstanding athletes. The teachers/coaches who worked with these teams often are included.

Some places have “student of the month” awards for various accomplishments. Some will honor “most improved” students.

To be fair, sometimes students are excel in academics also are outstanding in academics or some form of artistic expression.

Sometimes school have pictures of students who are carrying out some form of community service. I’ve seen young people helping help to clean up a forest, working with senior citizens, tutoring younger students or creating booklets and oral histories of their community.

Some schools display trophies or other forms of recognition that students have won. Once again, the range of recognition varies. Sometimes the trophies are only from athletics, and sometimes there is a broader array presented.

Some schools also have pictures of family and community members who have provided outstanding service to the school. And you sometimes find pictures of outstanding graduates. I’ve seen pictures of former legislators, pro football or hockey players, governors and a Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court.

A growing number of schools highlight the two and four year colleges that their graduates are attending. These schools also note which students have graduated from these programs to help promote and encourage the value of ongoing learning.

The wisest schools honor a wide range of accomplishment. They recognize and convey the value of arts, academics, athletics and service. They honor families and other community members who have made important contributions to the school and its students. And they include the teaches/coaches who have helped young people achieve, often more than the young people thought possible.

First impressions often are lasting impressions. Since schools aim to help young people develop an array of talents and knowledge, shouldn’t they make this clear as people first walk into their building?

A New Experience

My first day at school was a completely new experience for me. It is because the atmosphere completely changes for any child. You always stay in the comfort and safety of your own home.

However, your first day at school opens door to unknown experiences and opportunities. Much like any other child, I was also scared on my first day. I remember clearly not letting go of my mother’s hand, hesitant to go in the classroom.

On my first day, I got up excited and put on my uniform for the first time. The feeling it gave me was so memorable, I can never forget it. As it was my first day, both my parents went to drop me off.

I remember seeing the classroom full of little children. Some crying while the others playing with others. I looked at my mother and gave her the look that I didn’t want them to leave. They had to go so I kept crying but eventually, my teacher consoled me.

Once I settled in the class, I talked with the other kids and started playing with them. The colourful walls of the classroom fascinated me a lot. We got many toys to play with so it all the other kids also got distracted and stopped crying.

My Sister My Saviour

My advantage was that my sister was also studying in the same school. She is 3 years older than me so she was my senior. During recess, I was starting to miss my parents so I got teary-eyed.

But, then my sister came to meet me and I feel she was no less than a saviour for me that day. She took permission from the teacher to take me out and I went with her to the playground.

We were swinging throughout recess. All my worries went away because I had a known face with me. After eating and swinging together, the bell rang to mark the end of the recess . So, she dropped me back to my class.

Before leaving, she gave me a kiss and patted my head. It was enough for me to go through the rest of the day without crying. Thus, it made me feel extremely blessed that I had my sister there for me.

Thus, my first day at school was really pleasant. It fills me with pride when I look back at it and share my experience with others. I feel my first day helped me become confident in school which ultimately shaped the rest of my years there. Thus, it was indeed a memorable experience for me.

The High School Experience: A Personal Reflection


Filled with growth and life lessons, the high school experience has been a journey worth the climb.

High school is arguably the most transformative time of a person’s life. My own experience has been filled with more memories, laughter, stress, and — most importantly, growth — than I ever could have anticipated when I began. 

The lessons I have learned about myself, about others, and about the world in the last four years have shaped who I am today, and that person is far from the naive 14-year-old girl who walked through those glass doors of La Salle nearly four years ago. I was oblivious to the overwhelming emotional distress that I would feel when I started high school. 

In some ways, it feels like an everyday battle. 

As a freshman, the struggle began with adjusting to what felt like a whole new world. I was desperately trying to make friends, considering I had only one. I never knew what it was like to feel alone in a school with so many people. I felt like I had to act a certain way or be a certain person in order to maintain a basic conversation with people in my classes or on my soccer team. 

Every day, my head was filled with an overwhelming concern about how I could manage to make myself look like someone with more friends than I actually had at the time. 

I remember constantly thinking, “I’ll start enjoying this at some point, right?” 

The truth is, I did. 

To anyone who is feeling the way I once felt, please know that those feelings do go away. By the end of my freshman year and into the next, I enjoyed myself. School wasn’t particularly challenging, and I was spending my weekends having fun with my friends and going to basketball games and sleepovers. I had finally created a routine and felt mostly content with my life, aside from daunting thoughts in my head telling me it was all a lie.

I think that’s something that all teenagers deal with. It comes with the age, the questions, “do my friends actually like me?” or “am I enough?” — “do people worry about me or have I tricked myself into thinking they do?” 

I continued to move throughout my sophomore year feeling a new level of comfort with my life. Then, the pandemic hit. 

The original two weeks of quarantine turned into two months, and then two years. The predictable high school experience I had become accustomed to was no longer my reality, and instead, high school turned into an atypical rollercoaster of isolation from all the essential parts of the experience. 

To say it was hard would be an understatement, but after the initial forced adjustment to a remote life, I was forced to be content without relying on others.

Without having to fear other people’s judgments of me or having to conceal myself in social situations to appear more “acceptable,” I gained independence and confidence within myself that I didn’t know existed.

Then finally — after over a year — the long-awaited return to school arrived. 

I rejoiced in my ability to thrive academically again and I was so relieved to feel like I was really learning. I reconnected with my friends, ate lunch outside, took finals, and then — after a blur of two months — the year ended. My junior year flew by like no other. 

When senior year rolled around, I felt out of place. I couldn’t imagine a world where I belonged to the oldest class at the school. In the beginning, it was odd getting used to, but after a few weeks, it was nothing but a thrill as I planned what the next weekend alongside my friends would hold. 

My friendships were flourishing and I was becoming closer and closer with people I had never really gotten to know. 

Unlike the three years prior, my senior year has felt like a stereotypical high school experience, and I could not be more grateful for it. 

I always thought of myself as someone who was above enjoying things like attending soccer games, getting ready for homecoming with my friends, singing karaoke in someone’s basement, or going to a trampoline park for an 18-year-old’s birthday party. 

The truth is, I’m not. 

I regret that I spent so long depriving myself of the things I love in order to fit a narrative that I created for myself. 

I love that I will graduate high school happier and more fulfilled than I ever felt during my other three years here. It feels like everything has finally come full circle, after all these years of feeling so alone. 

So yes, it was transformative. I am finally content with the person I have become and the life I have chosen to lead. I wouldn’t be the same without La Salle and I wouldn’t be the same without the people I’ve gotten to know here. 

I know that I will look back on my high school experience here, not feeling critical of the insecurities I have felt, but feeling grateful for the memories and lessons that came regardless of them.

My First Impression of High School

Two years ago symbolizes for me the first time I heard and knew something about my school, the way it was described by my friends who attended summer camps was a big school with different activities sports and military activities, with a good environment full of students, teachers, coaches and everybody else involved in school life. Months later when I got finally accepted my family and I were very happy. Although the good feelings I had of going, my first impression symbolizes my expectations of what I was waiting about my school. There is one of those moments that everybody feels at the time they arrive to a new place, a special place where someone will live for several years, a sensation of discovery new aspects, characteristics, secret places and crowded places. Those feelings and sensations described me at the time my family and I arrived back in fall of 2008, at that moment my first words described my thoughts, nerves and impatient of being at a new place for me. Even though at the time I arrived to my school bad and good impressions and sensations were passing through my feelings and thoughts. The impressions that my mind was having represented the emotion of having new friends, eagerness to learn new things such as the military activities and the athletic activities. Soon I realized my enthusiasm for beginning to play soccer was enormous, I couldn’t wait to start practicing the next day. My parents were feeling happy and proud of me as my comments and my expression on my face were seeing by my parents. The expectations that I had for school after I came for the first time symbolizes all the good aspects that I thought a place as school can have, his wonderful environment within the students, faculty and staff represents the expectations that before I came to school my friends introduced me as a quick tour of what my school can offer to the children to go either to summer camps or winter school. My school represents such the place of good expectations.

Students form lasting impressions during the first days of the school year. Here’s how teachers can make Day 1 impactful.

When Ivan Barclay recalls his first day of fourth grade, there are certain things that stick out in his memory.

There was an ant farm. And a snake aquarium. And of course, his teachers. 

“I remember teachers smiling and saying, ‘How are you?’ Or kneeling down and looking me in the eye and asking me my name,” he says. “I felt excited to be at school.”

Those first impressions of school stayed with Ivan, a 2002 Metro Atlanta alum who has spent the last decade as a child therapist at an Atlanta-based practice he co-founded with his wife, called Barclay Light & Wellness. 

In addition to working with children and families at his practice, Ivan also partners with a number of low-income Atlanta schools to offer part-time counseling services. He coaches children on behavioral issues and supports teachers with classroom management and literacy. He knows the start of the school year is a time when students are forming a ton of impressions about what it means to be at school. 

“Children are excited to matriculate to the next grade,” Ivan says. “It's a sign of maturity. But they want to know what that new grade is like and how they fit in. Are the assignments difficult? Can I relate to this teacher? Do I measure up to my peers?” 

Psychologists have found that we form our first impressions of other people  in a matter of seconds . Our appearance, the way we dress, and our body language all play a role in forming these first impressions. In fact, children as young as 3 are already forming judgments about a person’s trustworthiness and competence, simply by looking at a person’s face. By the time children start kindergarten, they are well versed in sizing up the adults in the room.

From the moment students first walk into the school building to their first interactions with teachers, principals, and fellow students — it all has an impact on how they perform in school throughout the year and shapes the mindsets they will carry through life.

Starting the Year With Strong Relationships

By the time children enter kindergarten, some may be spending more time during the day with their teachers than with their family. Teachers, therefore, have a big influence on a child’s perception of school. Students are looking for cues from teachers. What does their body language convey? Do they make eye contact? Is this someone who I can relate to and trust?

Building strong relationships with students is a two-way street. That means making time to connect with each student and also opening up and sharing about yourself. 

Chiquita Puckett (Metro Atlanta ‘02) has taught at Dobbs Elementary School in Atlanta since 2002 and currently serves as an early intervention teacher. She works with students in grades 3-5 who are behind in reading and math. Carving out time to cultivate relationships with students helps build a strong foundation for when their work gets more rigorous throughout the year. 

At the start of the school year, Chiquita meets one-on-one with each of her students to get to know them and understand their needs and interests. This includes everything from learning about their academic interests and areas of growth, what kinds of rewards they find most motivating, their favorite color, and whether they prefer to end the day with a handshake, high-five, or hug.

She also shares personal details about herself that are relatable for her students. She shows students a slideshow with photos of herself when she was their age, along with shots of her family, her dog, and her sorority. 

“I think it's important for kids to see you were once their age, too, and you have a mother and father, sisters, and brothers, just like them,” Chiquita says. “Kids sometimes forget that you are a whole person.”

Dealing With First-Day Jitters

These initial interactions with teachers are especially important for younger students, who may be experiencing a school setting for the first time. This is something Sandra Clarke Lynaugh (Las Vegas ‘04) is quite familiar with.

Sandra teaches at Dennis Ortwein Elementary in Las Vegas and is entering her 15th year as a kindergarten teacher. Every year, she helps her young students navigate a huge adjustment in their daily routine.

“Mostly, their first impression is just fear, because everything is so new,” Sandra says.

During the first few weeks of school, Sandra focuses on helping kids understand what it’s like to be in a school environment. One of the things she does right away to help alleviate that fear is to establish her role as the adult in the room who will keep things safe and under control. She does this by acknowledging her students’ emotions, while also balancing compassion with firmness. When students act out, she calmly pulls them aside for a little pep talk.

“I explain to them —I  understand your emotion and I respect it,” Sandra says. “But here at school, it causes this impact on everyone else. The kids can see that I care about the student who's distressed but I also care about them.”

Meghan McDoniel (St. Louis ‘10) says this initial fear is “very normal” for kids who are forming their first impressions of school. Meghan is working on her Ph.D. in psychology at Penn State and studies early anxious behaviors in young children, especially as they make the transition from preschool to kindergarten. Meghan says that by modeling socially appropriate ways of dealing with “big feelings,” teachers can help students see school as a safe place to learn and grow, which will set them up for success as they move up a grade level, and into adulthood.

“Kids pick up on a ton of social-emotional learning cues from their teachers,” Meghan says. “A teacher who models vulnerability shows students how to talk about feelings, rather than acting out.”

“When parents come to you and say, 'My kid really loves the school. They feel comfortable here. They’ve already made friends.' That makes me feel we did our job.”

Setting Expectations… And Sticking to Them

Positive first interactions with teachers are the first step in helping kids adjust to their new environment and manage their feelings so that they can learn in class. Setting clear expectations on Day 1 also helps students form an impression that school is a safe, organized place that is setting them up for success.

Chiquita gives a lot of thought to communicating clear rules and procedures for her elementary students. This includes how to turn in work, what to do when you need to go to the restroom, or if your pencil breaks, and everything in between.

“I script them out so I know how I will explain and practice them with the students,” she says.

Chiquita has recently shifted away from using the phrase “class rules” and now refers to them as “class agreements.” Her students are directly involved in coming up with these expectations for what would make a safe and fun learning environment. Chiquita says this shift has helped students feel ownership over their day-to-day life in the classroom.

“We come up with agreements that we all feel would help us achieve the ideal class,” she says.

In addition to setting clear expectations for her kindergarteners, Sandra says continually enforcing them — often over and over again — is also critical during the first days of school. This consistency is the key to helping students see their teacher as someone they can trust.

“A lot of the repetition can be tiresome and tedious, like you’re not explaining yourself well enough,” Sandra says. “But I just project a calm demeanor and remain consistent.” 

Clear expectations are as important for high schoolers as they are for younger students. 

Jonathan Synold (Las Vegas ‘04) has served as assistant principal and is now principal of Advanced Technologies Academy in Las Vegas. The magnet high school draws students from over 40 middle schools across the Las Vegas valley each year. So everything is new for its students — new neighborhood, new building, new teachers, and new friends.

“It's like college,” Jonathan says. “You might know one or two kids from middle school, but the reality is, you're on your own.”

Making a good first impression on students who are navigating so much change means having the entire school go all-in on setting clear expectations. On the first day of school, students attend an orientation where they learn about the school and meet their teachers. The counseling department ensures that all students receive printed copies of their schedules so they know what their day will look like. Upperclassmen pair up with freshmen to walk them around to each class. Teachers set expectations for their classroom procedures. There’s also an orientation night for parents during the first week.

One month into the school year, Jonathan can tell whether the school’s efforts to make a positive first impression on students is working, when he meets parents at open house night.

“When parents come to you and say, ‘My kid really loves the school. They feel comfortable here. They’ve already made friends.’ That makes me feel we did our job,” Jonathan says.

Helping Students Feel a Sense of Belonging

The first days of school are also an opportunity for students to start forming mindsets about school as a welcoming place. 

Because students commute from across the city to attend Advanced Technologies Academy, it’s important for them to see school as a place where they belong, even if they are traveling a long way to get there, Jonathan says. At the beginning of every school year, the school prints out a giant Google map showing points for all of the students’ home addresses. It’s a way to show students that they are all in a similar situation — coming from different places, but part of one community at school. 

At Dennis Ortwein Elementary, Sandra starts every school year by printing out photos of each of her kindergarten students. All of the students receive binders with their photos on them, to keep track of their work. She also tapes their photos to the classroom walls and work tables. During the morning song circle, the class will sing songs while she holds up each student’s photo, so students can begin associating names with new faces.

“When they can physically see themselves in this crazy new environment that they're in, it tells them, ‘This is my place. This is where I belong. I see myself here,’" Sandra says.

Students’ first impression of the classroom environment will stick with them in the long run, and ultimately set them up for success later in life, Sandra says. Classroom rituals, the rules, and the decor all go toward building a community where students respect each other and work together, and aren’t afraid to try new things.

“As the year goes on, when things get more difficult socially and academically, they know that we can handle that together, Sandra says. “And I can be the rock for that.”

How to Make a Good Impression on the First Day of School

Whether you're a teacher about to meet your new class, or you're a student starting a new school year, there are lots of simple ways you can make a great impression. As a teacher, it's important to set the rules and expectations for your class on the first day while also letting your students get to know you and each other. If you're a student, try to be friendly and open to making new friends, and show your teachers you're prepared for the school year.

Creating a Welcoming Environment

Step 1 Dress professionally yet comfortably.

  • Wear comfortable shoes that breathe, especially if the weather is still warm.
  • Follow the school dress code for teachers, if applicable.

Step 2 Design your classroom to be bright and cheerful.

  • You might choose a color scheme, such as turquoise and yellow, for your room and decorate the room with those colors.
  • Add things like lights, colorful bins, educational posters, and window decorations.
  • While your classroom should have color in it, don't overdo it—too much stimulation on the walls can affect a student's focus.

Step 3 Introduce yourself to the class.

  • Tell your students what they should call you, and write your name on the board so they learn how to spell it.
  • Include exciting things you have planned for the class over the school year in your introduction to get the students excited about what’s to come.

Step 4 Make a personal connection with the students.

  • Include things like where you’re from, what you did over the summer, and if you have any pets or favorite foods.
  • Create a visual that shows your likes and dislikes, which could be an example of a get-to-know-your-class activity that each student makes as well.

Step 5 Ask the students to share information about themselves.

  • Consider playing a game that helps the students (and yourself!) learn each other's names.

Step 6 Smile often to encourage your students to have fun while learning.

  • Portray positive body language by standing up straight, looking your students in the eyes, and smiling genuine smiles whenever possible.
  • Smiling also projects a confidence and warmth that shows your students you're approachable.

Step 7 Be yourself!

Setting the Course for the Year

Step 1 Establish the rules of the classroom for students to follow.

  • Other rules might include follow directions, listen carefully, or come to class prepared to learn.
  • Write the list of rules on a poster board or other large piece of paper so students can read it from their seat throughout the year.

Step 2 Set a routine so students know what to expect.

  • Go over the daily routine in detail, such as whether the class will start with a warm up activity, what time they’ll have lunch or recess, and what they should do if they have free time.
  • Consider teaching your class hand signals for things like going to the bathroom and getting water so that they don’t need to vocally ask you.

Step 3 Make a thorough plan for the day that involves creativity.

  • For example, write down the times of each activity, such as 8:00-8:30 introductions, 8:30-9:00 summer reading book activity, 9:00-10:00 music class, and so on.
  • Write the schedule of your day on the chalkboard or whiteboard so the class can see and refer to it all day if desired.
  • Include things in your day such as class introductions, a writing prompt about the summer, or a read-aloud story.

Step 4 Ask other teachers for help or advice, if needed.

  • You might ask another teacher, "What's your favorite get-to-know-you game?" or "How often do you let students go to the bathroom or get water?"

Starting School as a Student

Step 1 Bring all the supplies you’ll need for the school day.

  • Don’t forget to pack your lunch along with your school supplies if you won’t be buying it at school.

Step 2 Choose an outfit that makes you feel confident.

  • Make sure you stick to your school’s dress code, if necessary.
  • If you have a school uniform, try personalizing your look by adding a watch, necklace, or stylish shoes.

Step 3 Get a full night's rest before the first day of school.

  • For example, if you know you need to wake up at 7:00 am, try to be in bed by 8:30 or 9:00 pm.

Step 4 Have good hygiene to make yourself look presentable.

  • Consider styling your hair with gel, or braiding it to keep it out of your face.
  • Wash your face before school, and apply makeup such as concealer or mascara if desired.
  • Paint your nails to give yourself some added flair, if allowed.

Step 5 Get to school early to arrive at your classes on time.

  • If you don’t know your way around the school well yet, plan to get there early to find out where to go.
  • If you're new to the school, see if there's a day before the first day of school when you can go and familiarize yourself with the school.
  • Wear a watch to help you keep track of the time throughout the day, if desired.

Step 6 Smile often and portray positive body language.

  • Avoid crossing your arms when talking to people so you appear more inviting.

Step 7 Be social by talking to old friends and possible new ones.

  • If you're new to the school, make an effort to strike up a conversation or smile with as many people as you feel comfortable, as this might lead to the person asking you to sit with them at lunch or hang out during a free period.
  • Say hello to people you don’t know in the hallway or in class when the teacher isn’t teaching, especially if you see a new person who may not know anyone yet.

Step 8 Start good work habits to prepare you for the year.

  • Listen closely when your teacher speaks, writing down important things like the homework policy and classroom rules.
  • Try to raise your hand if you know the answer so your teacher sees you’re willing to participate in class.
  • Beginning good work habits in the beginning of the school year will help ensure they stay with you throughout the year.

The teacher came after a few minutes. She was very friendly. After an hour, we all grouped together, and played several fun games and did many activities together. It was a very amazing day.

In my first lesson I was taught the alphabet. But since I already knew them, the teacher called me out to recite it in front of the class. I nervously went ahead and did it. Everyone clapped for me. It was a very nice moment and made my first day of the school an unforgettable memory for me.

My first day at school is an unforgettable memory for me and gave me a gift I cherish till this date. It was a cosy and comfortable evening in April when I was informed with the news that I have been admitted to Mount Libra Zee School.

I didn’t know how to react. I have seen my sister going to school daily, sometimes she was happy about it, but sometimes she was very reluctant to go and made silly excuses to avoid the school. My parents had also brought a very cute school uniform. I liked it and was excited to wear it. But I still had no idea about how the first day of my school was going to be.

How My First Day At School Started

The next morning, I dressed up very early in excitement. I ate my breakfast and Mummy packed a small tiffin box for me. At 8 o'clock, I went to the school in my father’s red car.

When I Reached My School

The school building was huge. It was painted with cartoons. I got happy when I saw my favourite cartoon characters, Tom & Jerry painted on the walls too. My father left me at the school gate to a peon after instructing him about my class. The peon picked me up very gently and started walking through the endless corridors. I could see the huge playground in the middle of the school building. It had all kinds of swings in it. For a moment, I wanted to run away to my favourite Merry-Go-Round, but I dropped that temptation and was dropped in front of my class by the peon.

My Classroom

The class had 15 chairs, all painted with cartoon characters. The wall had ABCs and numbers painted on it. It was a very cheerful and colourful environment. My eyes immediately glanced through the students already sitting there. They all were lost in their own world. Some were sobering, while some were making drawings with crayons.

After a few minutes, our teacher came. She asked each of us our names and hobbies, and then she introduced herself to us. Then, she then asked everyone to name the animals and birds painted on a picture board. We all begin singing the names. It was very fun. She was impressed with us and gave us candies at the end of the lesson.

After 2 hours, a bell rang for lunch. I took out my tiffin and started feasting on my sandwiches. A boy came to me, and said that sandwiches are his favourite. I knew his name by now, Ansh. I quickly offered him one and he was very happy. We soon became friends and chatted endlessly about Spider-Man, Iron Man and Tom and Jerry.

After learning that his favourite cartoon was also Tom and Jerry , I instantly knew I got my first school friend. 14 years forward, Ansh is still my best friend, and I am always thankful to him for making my first day at school a very fond memory.

Hearing my heart beating faster and faster, my palms get sweaty, and the feeling of restless butterflies in my stomach all let me know that my nerves are strung tight. Looking around me, everyone seems like they are a sea of calmness. Soft murmurs can be heard from an occasional speaker while questions fly around in my mind. I look down at my drink and back up at the room, still thinking about the moment that has not come. Waiting for someone to step forward with a greeting while hoping I can succeed this time. Occasionally, someone looks my way. We both give a tiny smile and a small nod. However, they always seem to be elsewhere in their minds as they turn back to their discussion. Walking slowly around the room, I am still waiting for that moment that have not come but I know it will be soon. I nervously clutch my glass. There are times when I am holding my drink as if it is a shield between everyone and me. I know that it is impossible to avoid speaking. It is what I signed up for, and now I feel the need to go through this process. However, if there were times when I had a single regret for doing something out of my comfort zone, it is now. In all honesty, first impression was never my strong point. Usually, I am confident in settings where someone introduces those who are present. Now, stepping out on my own, doing my introductions seems like an impossible mission. For many people, first impression is important. It sets the tone of how people not only view another person, but how they communicate and work with each other as well. I strongly believe that first impressions seem to be similar to job interviews. From how firmly you shake hands to how well you answer questions, even if they may seem a little invasive at times, can mean the difference between making a good first impression and making the worse mistake of your life. Most bad first impression tends to last for life and spread like wildfire. If I come off the wrong way, chances are the person will end up telling their friends, families, and colleagues about one of the worse first meetings they ever had. Thus, it could ruin my chances at success. As Eliot Abrams once said, "First impressions matter. Experts say we size up new people in somewhere between 30 seconds and two minutes." I have no doubt that this is true. During those precious moments, it is possible to make a complete idiot of oneself or to make a good impression. As the moment approaches, I can feel the butterflies in my stomach turn into a raging tornado. Their wings are beating against my insides while the wind screams "idiot" in my head. I walk across the room holding my glass-shield. It is now that I realize how small and insignificant glass is in my hand. Before, when the moment seemed so far away, the glass felt heavy, as if it was some vase or glass door. Now, as the moment for making my first impression draws closer, the glass seems to get smaller. Looking in the glass, I can see the liquid in it. I have a short conversation in my mind about whether the glass is half empty or half full. As I make my way across the room, the argument in my mind gets louder and louder. Finally, a rational voice speaks up from the depths of my soul and says, "Does it matter?" As if my mind was a room of academics trying to discover the meaning of life and was presented with a theory, everything went quiet. For a brief moment, I have utter quiet in my mind. Time to think about the first impression I am about to make. As I turn my mind to how I am going to make a first impression, my body starts to relax. The butterflies in my stomach went from a raging tornado to a calm river. The soft fluttering of their wings calms my nerves, and I become confident. As I look across the sea of humans standing before me, I spot my target. She is a tall, blonde woman with the blue eyes and charming smile sitting at the table at the front of the room. She is speaking to someone. They seem to be in a very deep conversation. This is good because it gives me time to size her up. As I look at her, I start to form a first impression of her. There is thunder in her voice as she speaks and the way she tilts her head to the side a little tells me she is someone who speaks her mind. She waves her hand as she speaks in order to drive her point home to the person in front of her. Slowly she stands as if she is a mountain rising from the sea. It becomes clear that due to her height, she towers over the majority of the people in the room. She wears eyeglasses, but her eyes appear sharp as an arrow as it moves across the room looking for its target. I have a feeling that it may be difficult to talk to her about my issue, so I try not to meet her piercing blue eyes. Unfortunately, our eyes met. The butterflies that were alive in my stomach met a quick death in an instance as I move towards her. To my shock and utter surprise she shakes her head no and points to the person behind me. The coolness of relief washes over me as if I was a burning bush needing water thrown over me to be saved from destruction. I gulp down the last of my drink as if I never had a drink in years. As I search around for a full glass to become my next shield, I try to figure out why I was passed over. Should I think myself lucky that I have more time to make a great first impression or should I just give up and go home? For some reason, I stay because maybe something good will come from this experience. I turn my back to her and walk to the nearest table and pick up a full glass. I have my new shield. I am ready for whatever comes next. I look around the room and noticed that many people have left the room. Those that remain are quiet. Some look around scared while others are seemingly calm. Suddenly, a name is called. A thin guy slowly walks across the room as if it was doomsday and he is about to meet his opponent. I can hear him stutter his name to the person who called it out earlier as he reaches the front of the room. All eyes are on him. He is shaking like a leaf on a windy day. She smiles to him and tell him everything will be alright. She offers him a seat. Everyone turns their head away, not wanting to see the result of this battle firsthand. Whispers can be heard as the two continue their conversation. More people walk into the room. Each was handed a glass, and each is using that glass as a shield. I can hear someone walking towards me. I lift my eyes to see who dares to interpret my thoughts. I am met with a quiet, yet shy smile of a newcomer. She approaches me with confidence on her face. In her hand, she clutches her drink. I look closely at her face and can see her lips are quivering. I smile at her despite feeling nervous myself. She puts out her hand and says "Hi, my name is Kathy." Knowing this could be my chance to practice my first impression on her, stuck out my hand. Remembering to keep eye contact and give a firm but not too firm handshake, I returned the greeting with my name. I can see she is interested in keeping the conversation going. While we wait for our moment to come, we talk about where we are from, how we arrive at our current destination today, and what we think our chances were like compared to others in the room. As we our conversation progress, I can see Kathy is becoming relaxed about the situation. Her death grip on her glass is loosening, and her lips are curved into the sunniest smile. We seem to be attracting the attention of those around us. A few people have formed a line similar to a flock of bird and were coming our way. To them, Kathy and I must seem like an island in the middle of a restless sea. The crowd around us gets bigger as our conversation starts to take on a life of its own. I look to the front of the room, hoping that my moment has not come yet. The thundering voice is calling out names, but none is mine, and I am happy about it. I know that with each person joining our conversation, I can practice getting better at my first impression. With each practice my chances at getting this part would increase. My nervousness is gone and in its place an overwhelming bout of confidence has bloomed. I put my glass down because I know I no longer need a glass shield. I looked around, past the small crowd around me and noticed the room is becoming empty again. Like the sun knows it will rise the next day, I know my moment for my first impression is coming up. I prepare myself mentally for my moment. The thundering voice calls out once more and this time it calls out my name. Everyone in the crowd around me goes silent as I take a deep breath. As people part like the Red Sea and I walk down the middle, a few brave souls whispers "good luck" to me. I smile and thank them knowing that this was my chance to get the part. As I stare straight into her eyes, the tall, mountain of a woman gives me a tiny smile. Her motions to a chair in front of the desk and tells me to take a seat. She adjusts her eyeglasses and picks up her pen. She stabs the paper with a pen as she writes down some notes. I reach over the table and extend my hand. In my clearest voice, I introduced myself and she does the same. We both give firm handshakes. Her smile widens, and I know I succeeded in starting my first impression off right. She starts to question why I am here today and how I heard about the film production going on at this location. I am excited because the answers are clear as day. I tell her about a friend I know working on the film at the moment. I can see her piercing eyes are less sharp now. Instead, they seem to be smiling. She knows the persons I am speaking about now. First impression is important to the majority of society. Making a bad first impression is everyone's worse nightmare. While I did not get a part in the film, I know that I did not make a complete idiot out of myself. The conversation had gone as smooth as a calm lake on a hot sunny day. She found our conversation to be stimulating. After exchanging contact, we parted ways. As I walked through the room, I can see that many of the other would-be actresses and actors were nervous. I smile at them knowing that many of them had the same nervous butterfly feeling in their stomach. Most were probably hoping to get a part in the film. However, I know they were all hoping that their first impression would go alright. For them, making a good first impression could mean the difference between getting future jobs and being forgotten like yesterday's trash. Again, people part like the Red Sea as I passed by them. I whisper "good luck" to many of the people who were in the crowd with me. In return, I was met with a sea of silent smiles and nervous head nods.

The saying “You only have one chance to make a first impression” holds true in many situations, from job interviews to sales calls. How can you make sure that you start off on the right foot in any of these scenarios? What should you actually say? And what’s the best way to follow up?

First Impression Significance Essay

The first meeting of two people makes up the most importance in their relationship. On the first encounter between two or more people, each undoubtedly asks unconsciously whether the other person will be fit for them in terms of the objective of their meeting. First impressions are an evolutionary trait of humans to adapt adequately and participate in society interactions.

Additionally, first impressions depend on the observer and the person observed. Most empirical research on first impression shows that persons are most attracted to other persons who show a tendency to accept them, as they would like to. This paper describes how first impressions are made and why they are important to the functioning of any society.

We make first impressions as a preliminary mode of adaptation to the other person and therefore the impressions made are in no way definitive. As we get to interact more with the other person, our preliminary impressions undergo a modification. However, this does not imply that we completely overhaul our initial impression of the other person; instead, our initial impressions make the basis of our further scrutiny and refinement of subsequent impressions.

An experiment by the American psychologist, Solomon Asch demonstrates the above point in practice. In the experiment, the psychologist drafted six qualities of an individual and then gave the qualities to two groups of students and asked them to describe the individual in their own words. Each group received a different order of the same six qualities of the individual.

The first group received the six qualities in the order of the most positive to the least positive while the second group received an opposite arrangement, from the least positive quality to the most positive quality.

The experiment’s result showed that the first group interpreted the negative qualities of the individual in the view of the individual’s positive qualities thus indicating that the group had formed a positive preliminary perception of the individual. Contrariwise the second group viewed the individual positive qualities as minor qualities of the individual’s overall negative personality.

This result indicates that the second group relied on the sequence of delivery of qualities to form their initial perception. From the results of the experiment, it is clear that an individual form the preliminary perception of another person based on what attribute of the other person shows up first.

The degree of accuracy of first impressions depends significantly on the observer and the observed person. First impressions determine how we handle the next step of getting to know the other person as the example of psychologist Solomon Asch has demonstrated. The experiment only highlights first impressions in a controlled environment, however, the reality governing first impressions is much complex.

Humans use first impressions as an evolutionary instinct of survival. According to psychology, it only takes three seconds for a person to form a first impression of another person. The brief exposure to the other person’s behavior and characteristics is enough for individuals to form an opinion whether further interaction with the other person will be of any benefit. As an evolutionary trait, the interpretation of the brief exposure to the other person’s behavior serves as a shield in interpersonal relationships in an unknown societal setting.

In medieval times, people used first impressions to gauge the other person or group’s chances of inflicting harm or being beneficial. In the modern world, survival is different. Survival is in terms of meeting our goals, fulfilling our desires, finishing tasks, accurately predicting the future and avoiding danger whether physical or psychological.

Although the perceiver may honestly create a first impression, the perceived individual may only be pretending. A person’s way of interpreting the brief exposure of behavior during first encounters with other persons determines how they proceed in their relation to the stranger.

On the other hand, individuals expect others to form a first impression of their behaviors and therefore go to great lengths in ensuring that only what they desire to demonstrate is actually captured by their perceiver. Therefore, individuals do not rely on first impressions only in their formation of an opinion of a stranger’s character.

Similarity of the encounter with previous encounters significantly affects how an individual will perceive another. Secondly, the similarities of the stranger’s observable characteristics with those characteristics that the perceiver is examining also contribute to the final perception. Due to this fact, individuals tend to look for what is common between them and use their value of the common factor to perceive the other person.

So if the stranger’s only similarity is a depiction of a characteristic that is very mild in the perceiver’s awareness, then the overall judgment formed is skeptical and subject to further scrutiny. However when the opposite is the case, an individual forms a favorable perception of the stranger and further scrutiny happens to support the already formed perception. This attribute of first impressions is in tandem with the findings of psychologist Solomon Asch as explained earlier in this paper.

Despite the high probability of individuals in getting their first impressions wrong, society goes to great lengths to develop mechanisms intended for creating first impressions. In work relations and careers, resumes and interviews exist to help employers to perceive their potential employees. However, the same avenues also allow potential employees to falsify their actual behavior and competency to create a similarity with that of the potential employer.

In the medical field, physicians and nurses rely on the initial description of a condition by their patients as well as the observable traits of their patients to deduce the kind of medication and care appropriate for the patient. In interpersonal relationships, persons use the setting of their first encounter, their stereotypic view of the behavior demonstrated by the stranger and their intention for meeting to form a perception.

The formation of first impressions is fundamental to people’s social perception and social cognition. The individual’s evolution of understanding others in a setting that lacks a constant social hierarchy is heavily dependent on this attribute. As a result, the creation of first impressions is a dynamic process that constantly incorporates previously learnt and experienced aspects of perceiving other people’s suitability for association.

As the society becomes more aware of the importance of first impressions, some individuals strive to ensure that their behaviors, as depicted to others, are a reflection of who they want to be instead of their actual self. On the other hand, new forms appear together with the refinement of stereotypes to ensure that first impressions are accurate. The result is a constant formulation of new strategies and mechanisms of creating first impressions to reduce the tendency of making inaccurate perceptions.

First Impressions: Writing A Great College Essay

For most students it is a challenge trying to figure out what to highlight in a college application essay. Should you focus more on clubs, sports, and extracurriculars, or would an impressive list of academic achievements be better?

Believe it or not, your future school is probably dealing with the same questions. Grade inflation means that it can be difficult to differentiate students by their academic achievements alone, and most good students also have a wealth of extracurricular activities that make the job even harder. As a result, colleges are increasingly looking to your essay for a better idea of who you are.

This makes it all the more important to get your essay right—but it can be daunting when it feels like every word is important. We asked our admissions experts what they usually look for, and came up with the following dos and don’ts for a great college essay.

Write for your audience. Most students apply to around eight schools, but make the mistake of using the same essay for each. Every school has a different set of values and characteristics, and you need to show admissions officers that you have them too—so tailor your response!

Take note when prompted. Some essay questions are open-ended and allow you to choose your topic, but when a school asks a specific question, make sure you answer it. Do your research and think about how you can use the topic to showcase your own experiences.

Use examples. You might say you want to run your own business one day, but statements like this are much more powerful if you can give examples of how you are progressing towards your goals. Link statements to examples wherever you can, and then further link these to your choice of program and school.

Be passionate and heartfelt. Give the admissions committee a reason to be excited about having you on their campus. Your future college wants talented students, but it is just as important to them that they are engaged—so show them what motivates you and how it will transfer to your degree.

Take your time: Very few people produce their best work under time pressure, so make sure you take breaks to give yourself a chance to refocus and gain a new perspective on your writing. You should also have someone else take a look at your work—other people can often spot problem areas or typos that you would have otherwise missed.

Write one long paragraph. Structure your ideas into clearly defined sections and it will pay off—an introduction, middle, and a conclusion will help admissions officers to understand your points as they read through quickly.

Over-state the facts: Making a two-week internship sound like you were the CEO of a Fortune 500 company won’t improve your standing in the eyes of the admissions committee. Be honest—they’ll appreciate it.

Try and cram too much in: If your essay feels like a list of your various classes, clubs, jobs, and accomplishments, it won’t help the admissions committee understand what you’re like as a person. Try not to exceed the requested word count, be focused, and edit yourself well.

Use complex language: Focus on plain, correct English to make your statement clear and easy to read. Overcomplicating your language might demonstrate a wide vocabulary, but it won’t help your clarity. If you’re producing an essay, this is your chance to demonstrate your writing skills and the fact that you know what’s appropriate when—a critical asset for a university student.

Remember, admissions committees receive thousands of personal statements, and they have limited time to read them, so you need to stand out. Ask yourself if your essay truly reflects you, or just sounds like anyone else you know. Be clear, let your talents shine through, and make your reason for applying to their school obvious.

Impressions of A School

School is a centre of knowledge. It is a temple of Goddess Saraswati. I like my school. I like most of the subjects but I do not like the constant pressure and the competition, school –work and homework take my whole life. I do not have time for bobbies, for friends, for relaxing or for making fun. I agree that schooling is necessary but why does it have to be so boring. Why we are treated like machines, to be switched on and off, and fed with facts? Why can’t school be more interesting and more  challenging? School is not just a place things together. I learn lots of new things. I enjoy working hard. I have a lot of fun. I shall be really sorry when my school days are over.

What is the intention behind a school? School is a training  centre to make one a Man- a complete Man. The work one does, does not go waste but makes one fit and suitable, for the pulls and pressures of life. I feel that we are given much homework which consumes all the time. It makes  us mechanical. We have little time for hobbies, gossiping etc. I find the subjects boring and tedious. They are hardly related to the  realities of life. I feel that we are a part of machine called school. We have our own likes and dislikes. We must have time for playing, talking, enjoying leisure etc. we are hardly left with any time for recreation. On other side I think , we are made to struggle. There is a purpose in it. It is to live happily afterwards and discharge our duties o our family, society and the nation. I must spare some time for other things too.

 I feel that the subjects taught in a school have no utility. A formula of Mathematics   is not going to help one to earn bread. Home work leaves no time for recreation or playing. We are taught stale subjects. For example , history is a playing. We are taught stale subjects. For example, history is a record of past events who was murdered and who won. We want up –to- date knowledge of the subject. If we are made to struggle, there should be a purpose to achieve. The subject related to life- problem should  be taught. We are humans. We should not be treated like machines. We should take the examination as a challenge. Some subjects. Have no utility. They should not be taught. A mathematics formula is not going to help one to earn bread. The variety of  subjects taught in a school helps us know more and more things. Knowledge is vast. It should be learnt through various interesting teaching methods showing the utility of the subject in life.  

School is necessary for education. Education makes us progressive, large- hearted, tolerant and civilized. There should be all round development of a student. The education is not a burden but it is a ladder to progress. More stress should be given to education  – to be taught through practical social activities for proper experience of life. The life of school and the social life of outside school should have a link to understand the reality of life. There are the sweet and bitter experience based impression about school life. An impression of an ideal school becomes a sweet memory of school life.
