Short Essay on A Funfair (550 Words)

“You want your life to be a set of funfairs when you do not remember that it is a combination of fun and tragedy.”

Never again shall I forget a funfair I visited this year in the spring vacation. When I was telling my friends about it, some of them asked me loudly, “What is the meaning of “funfair”? I told them that a funfair is a kind of mela or fair where all kinds of people come to watch entertainment shows, eat delicious foods, buy small beautiful things and play different interesting games.

The funfair was arranged by our college students’ welfare society to help poor students with the ticket money. My friends and I reached the college ground gate at about 10 a.m., and after buying five-rupee tickets, went inside the funfair. The very first activity to attract us was a group of singers singing famous folk-songs, connected with our cultural history. Hundreds of students, their parents and friends were standing around the singers clapping their hands. We heard songs about “Heer and Ranjha,” “Sassi and Pannu,” “Laila and Majnu,” “Rustam and Sohrab” and several others to our indescribable pleasure. After each song, the singers received a lot of money from the spectators or onlookers.

The next show to please everyone was the jokers’ programme. We saw five jokers, two with masks, two tall men in bright red clothes and one with a high cap and long stick-in-his hand. The two masked jokers told very fresh and lively jokes, and then asked questions from the red-clothed tall men and the spectators. Anyone who could not answer the questions about the jokes got a good beating by the stick of the capped joker. All this was extremely (very much) entertaining (enjoyable).[the_ad id=”17141″]

As we went forward, we felt hungry and thirsty. So we went to the kabab, sandwich and chat stalls (open shops). We ate some of all these dishes and then had ice-cream and cold drinks. Though the prices were a little high, we enjoyed it all, as almost every eatable was delicious (very tasty). We had a round of all the stalls once again. Students and members of their families were selling different articles like children’s clothes and toys, fancy shoes and electronic goods like irons, heaters, radios, and DVD players. I bought some DVDs that I could not find in the market earlier.

The eastern music show was a great entertainment. Different eastern musical instruments like the “sitar,” the “bansari,” the “shahnai,” the “been” and the “tabla” were being played with great skill (special ability). I felt like dancing at a point, and soon joined a band (group) of dancers. When I felt dizzy and my foot slipped, everyone laughed at me. The hand-wrestling game was a new experience. A handle had to be moved up and down with force, and the needle on the digits or numbers showed indicated) the strength of the arm or body. In the competition with friends, my muscular power was luckily at the top.

We bought some crockery and toys and returned from the funfair, full of joy and satisfaction. It was wondrously true fun to be at the funfair. Now I long (desire much) to visit several funfairs one after another in different cities, to enjoy fun, fun and nothing but (except) fun.

Walking a distance I saw a big merry-go-round where children rode the ride merrily. I stood there and watch them enjoy wondering why I grew up for now I could never sit on that merry-go-round. Instead, now I can ride the camel my uncle assured me. I enjoyed the ride on the hunch of the camel.

All was a lovely time spent well in that fair. I will carry this memory to my heart. As I proceeded towards home, I decided to share, my experience in my diary so that I can always relive the moment.

Fair, be it a city fair or a village fair, provides a fun activity to the children, as well as serves as a refreshment for the young and elderly. No doubt the fair is a fun event, but this is also a source of livelihood for the vendors who depend on this event. Many small vendors, also the hawkers depend on these fairs for their businesses. Funfair - Narrative Writing

I stood on a rickety, wooden platform above the entrance to the funfair. The wood was very old, as was evident by the many missing planks. Over the years, people gad engraved things into the cold wood. I could see everything. Every icy breath I took I inhaled the aroma of hotdogs and popcorn. Everywhere I looked, I saw little children devouring pink balls of fuzz on sticks. The floor was coated in crisp orange leaves, and surrounding the funfair were dark, naked trees. Hiding in between the leaves, was a mixture of litter; ripped chocolate bar wrapper and empty drinks cans blended into the foliage.  Below me were queues of people, eagerly awaiting entrance to the funfair. The chain of people became increasingly excited as they took a few infrequent steps forwards.

From my sanctuary, I could see a group of distrustful teenagers eyeing a handbag. They all wore old, dark, tattered clothing with many tears in them. The sign of rebellious teenagers. A few of the thieves were trying to brainwash a member of their group into trying to steal it. The reassured youth snuck like a wolf, close to the potential victim, only to be thwarted at the last second. The pack of thieves moved away out of sight, but I knew that they would still be on the prowl for their next victims.

I found my attention drawn towards a particularly colourful ride; the teacups. It had multicoloured lights placed strategically on it, so as to attract the attention of little children; a flash of azure, a streak of gold. From the ride came the shrill screams of delighted children, mixed with a toe-tapping tune.  After the ride came to a stop, I could hear the children begging their parents for just one more go, and their angry cries when they were denied their request.

Next to the teacups, stood the most gigantic ride I had ever seen. The braver children ran towards it, whereas the rest looked at it in despair, and walked away. From it came screams of not happiness, but of pure horror. The ride flung its victims from side to side, up and down, in every direction possible. Underneath the monster stood dozens of worried parents, the hairy caterpillars above their eyes furrowed in worry, horrified that they had let their children onto such a horrible machine. They paced the ground, counting down the seconds until they could take their little angels away from this monstrous ride.

A chilling melody reached my ears. I turned by head to locate the source of the sound, and found myself looking at a haunted house. The jet black walls were covered in skulls, and I’m sure their hollow eyes were staring at me. A group of little children bravely walked up to the House, sure that they were old enough to go on this ride on their own. They boarded the dull grey train that would take them through the haunted house. As the cold, metal safety bars clamped down upon the children and a piercing scream erupted from the speakers, I could tell from the look of worry on their faces, they were having second thoughts. The train eventually started, and slithered away into the darkness. Into horror.

I heard a scream emanating from my left. A little child was having a tantrum. He wanted to go on a ride one more time, but his mother was refusing to let him. The little boy was wearing a small, puffy orange jacket that was too big for him and made him look like an orang-utan. He was jumping up and down like a kangaroo, trying to make a stand. He screamed and I’m sure some glasses may have broken. He then stormed off, his tubby feet making very little progress compared to the long, thin feet of his mother.

Next to me stood a young couple. The girl had had dark auburn hair, leaf green eyes, and the look on her face was one of pure glee. She was wearing a coarse, crimson scarf and a thin leather jacket. The boy had light blonde hair, and sea-green eyes. He towered above me, the height of a tree. Both of them held hands, and looked out across the funfair, shoving that they were shy. Eventually the boy gathered up his courage, and leaned down towards and they both made eye contact. They stood like this for about 5 excruciatingly long seconds before they looked away, and the boy made an excuse about why he leant down. The couple soon walked away.

A young boy, about the age of 4 or 5 was wondering the funfair, looking for someone. He was wearing a thin sea-blue coat, and there were tears glistening on his cheeks. He was lost. He wandered around aimlessly, looking for someone he knew, but he couldn’t see anyone. The boy caused some concern to the adults, but many just ignored him. Eventually, a plump lady where bright red clothing found him, held his tiny hand, and guided him away from the crowds. She hugged him and gave him some gloves, and I could see the family resemblance. They both had the same round nose. She was his mother.  The mother then picked up her child, determined not to lose him again, and left through one of the exits.

A festive fair, on the other hand, is held during a festival season.

For example, a Durga puja fair in a city is held during the Durga puja festival and Pongal fair in southern India is held during the Pongal festival. During Holi also many fairs occur in different parts of the country.

Another fair which occurs in the city is Book Fair. A group of publishers and dealers organize Book Fair in order to promote books and improving sales. My Visit to a Fun-Fair

Last Sunday I visited a fun-fair with my friend Nandu. It was held on Nehru Maidan in my city. There were long queues at the ticket-window. We bought tickets and went in.

The fair ground was crowded with people. There were stalls with many kinds of goods. There were stalls exhibiting the handicrafts of various Indian states. We saw beautiful metal, wood and ivory carving. There were stalls of ready made clothes, plastic goods, leather goods, household appliances and other novelties.

All the stalls and shops were beautifully decorated and illuminated with colorful lamps. The whole area looked like a fairyland.

There were a film show, a magic show, many joy rides like giant wheel, merry-go-round, mini-railway, rope-way, etc. It was a great fun riding all the rides.

There were some refreshment stalls too. After going around all the stalls and making some purchases, we were tired and hungry. So we had some tasty snacks and ice-creams.

We returned home late at night.

Moscow-City: 7 surprising facts about the Russian capital’s business center

1. Guinness World Record in highlining

The record was set in 2019 by a team of seven athletes from Russia, Germany, France and Canada. They did it on September 8, on which the ‘Moscow-City Day’ is celebrated. The cord was stretched at the height of 350 m between the ‘OKO’ (“Eye”) and ‘Neva Towers’ skyscrapers. The distance between them is 245 m. The first of the athletes to cross was Friede Kuhne from Germany. The athletes didn't just walk, but also performed some daredevil tricks. Their record is 103 meters higher than the previous one set in Mexico City in December 2016.

2. Domination of Europe's top-10 highest skyscrapers

7 out of 10 Europe’s highest skyscrapers are located in Moscow-City. Earlier, the  ‘Federation Tower’ complex’s ‘Vostok’ (“East”) skyscraper was the considered the tallest in Europe.

However, in 2018, the construction of the 462 meter tall ‘Lakhta Center’ in Saint-Petersburg was completed, pushing ‘Vostok’ (374 m) into 2nd place. The 3rd place is taken by OKO’s southern tower (354 m).

3. The unrealized ‘Rossiya’ tower

If all the building plans of Moscow-City were realized, the ‘Lakhta Center’ in St. Petersburg wouldn't have a chance to be Europe's highest skyscraper. Boris Tkhor, the architect who designed the concept of Moscow-City, had planned for the ‘Rossiya’ tower to be the tallest. In his project, it was a 600 meter tall golden cylindrical skyscraper ending with a spire that was inspired by traditional Russian bell towers. Then, the project was reinvented by famous British architect Sir Norman Foster. He had designed ‘Rossiya’ as a pyramid ending with a spire. The skyscraper itself would have been 612 meters tall, and the height including the spire would have reached 744,5 meters (for comparison, the ‘Burj Khalifa’ in Dubai, UAE, would have been just 83,5 meters taller). Unfortunately, the investors faced a lot of economic problems, due to the 2008 financial crisis, so the ‘Rossiya’ skyscraper was never built. A shopping mall and the ‘Neva Towers’ complex was constructed at its place in 2019.

4. Changed appearance of ‘Federation Tower’

In its first project, the ‘Federation Tower’ was designed to resemble a ship with a mast and two sails. The mast was to be represented by a tall glass spire with passages between the towers. It was planned to make a high-speed lift in it. The top of the spire was going to be turned into an observation deck. But the ship lost its mast in the middle of its construction. Experts at the Moscow-city Museum based in the ‘Imperia’ (“Empire”) tower say, that the construction of the spire was stopped, firstly, due to fire safety reasons and secondly, because it posed a threat to helicopter flights – the flickering glass of the spire could potentially blind the pilots. So, the half-built construction was disassembled. However, an observation deck was opened in the ‘Vostok’ tower.

5. Open windows of ‘Federation Tower’

We all know that the windows of the upper floors in different buildings don’t usually open. Experts say that it’s not actually for people’s safety. Falling from a big height is likely to be fatal in any building. The actual reason is the ventilation system. In a skyscraper, it’s managed with a mechanical system, and the building has its own climate. But in the ‘Zapad’ (“West”) tower of the ‘Federation Tower’ complex, the windows can open. The 62nd and last floor of the tower are taken up by a restaurant called ‘Sixty’. There, the windows are equipped with a special hydraulic system. They open for a short period of time accompanied by classical music, so the guests can take breathtaking photos of Moscow.

6. Broken glass units of ‘Federation Tower’

The guests of the ‘Sixty’ restaurant at the top of the ‘Zapad’ tower can be surprised to see cracked glass window panes. It is particularly strange, if we take into consideration the special type of this glass. It is extremely solid and can’t be broken once installed. For example, during experiments people threw all sorts of heavy items at the windows, but the glass wouldn’t break. The broken glass units of ‘Zapad’ were already damaged during shipment . As each of them is curved in its own way to make the tower’s curvature smooth, making a new set of window panes and bringing them to Russia was deemed too expensive . Moreover, the investors had financial problems (again, due to the 2008 financial crisis), so the ‘Vostok’ tower even stood unfinished for several years. Eventually, the cracked window panes were installed in their place.

7. The highest restaurant in Europe

‘Birds’, another restaurant in Moscow-City, is remarkable for its location. It was opened at the end of 2019 on the 84th floor of the ‘OKO’ complex’s southern tower. Guests at the restaurant can enjoy an amazing panoramic view at a height of 336 meters. On January 28, the experts of ‘Kniga Recordov Rossii’ (“Russian Records Book”) declared ‘Birds’ the highest restaurant in Europe, a step toward an application for a Guinness World Record.
