Ultimate Guide to the MiM Application: 9 Key Elements to Stand Out and Get In

get my score mim essay

Do note that while all of these are important, the application is looked at holistically . This means that if you lack or are weak in one or more of these aspects, you can make up for them in other aspects.

As an example, when I was admitted to HEC Paris for the Master in Management Grande École, my academic background wasn’t the strongest (just above average GPA and tier-2 school in India), but I made up for it through my GMAT score (760, 99th percentile), international experiences, and entrepreneurial experiences. I also know other peers of mine at HEC that had the opposite. They had an exceptional academic background that made up for a less-than-exceptional GMAT/GRE score.

So don’t worry if you aren’t exceptional at each and every one of the below areas, or are even quite weak in one or more of them, as long as there are one or more areas that you are highly exceptional in.

Academic Background and Test Scores

Your academic background and test scores play a pivotal role in your HEC Paris MiM application, as they provide a snapshot of your intellectual abilities and dedication to your studies.

A strong academic record

A competitive GPA and a history of rigorous coursework, reflecting your commitment to academic excellence, can make a strong impression on your MiM application.

No matter what we say about grades being important or not, one thing that they do show is commitment and discipline.

You can show this through:

The higher, the better, of course. If your GPA looks or seems a bit unusually low and you have an explanation for it, you can mention that in the “additional information” section of your application.

The courses that you’ve taken

You can find opportunities to mention some of the specific, most impactful courses you’ve taken, and how they are relevant to your current and future goals (with the MiM) in your essays.

For example, it helps a lot to show that you’ve taken business courses, or if you’ve derived business motivation from other courses that you’ve taken. What matters the most is how the courses you took are relevant to what you want to do in the future.

The academic program(s) you studied

The program you studied does make a difference to your application. But what makes an even bigger difference is the story you can tell about the transition between your previous degree(s) and the MiM.

For instance, if you studied engineering and are transitioning to marketing (like me!) — what about your engineering degree is going to help you in marketing? In my case, for example, I wanted to work in marketing for a tech company – so it made sense. What story can you spin?

You can mention this in your essays as well. How will your engineering/arts/business/mathematics/medicine/whatever degree help you in your future career goals? How will you use your experiences to contribute to the MiM program?

The school(s) you studied in

Of course, the more competitive your previous schools were, the more it adds to your application profile. That being said, you can make up for a lack of a “prestigious” school with other aspects of your application like your academic record, work experience, GMAT/GRE score, and others as listed below.

Standardised Test Scores (GMAT/GRE)

Submitting your GMAT or GRE score is essential, and you must aim for as high of a score as you can possibly get.

Though there are no GMAT average or median scores published as of 2023, in 2018 the median GMAT score was 710. It is OK if you don’t meet this score as long as you are exceptional at multiple other areas of your application.

However, in order to be safe, I would recommend a score of 720 or above for top schools like HEC and ESSEC. The higher, the better.

My perception is that the GMAT takes quite a high weightage in your application, so it’s definitely an area to work hard in.

If you want advice on how to prepare for the GMAT, I made a video about how I prepared to get a 760 in the GMAT on my YouTube channel. You can watch it below.

However, my number one recommendation on how to prepare for the GMAT is by using and following Magoosh’s GMAT prep software. That’s what I used to get a 760 in my GMAT, and I definitely credit a lot of my result to it. Check it out here (affiliate link).

Showcasing academic achievements and overcoming weaknesses

When presenting your academic achievements in your application essays, be sure to address any potential gaps or weaknesses, while also highlighting academic awards and honours to showcase your strengths and resilience in the face of challenges.

Make sure that you mention all the relevant awards and honours that you’ve received, and most importantly, showcase how resilient you’ve been — mention any challenges you’ve faced, and how you’ve overcome them.

Top business schools want people that don’t give up — people that build strength through hardships. Sharing real stories of how you’ve been able to do so helps strengthen your case to join top MiM programs like HEC Paris, ESSEC, ESCP and others.

  • Professional Experience and Internships

In addition to a strong academic record, professional experience and internships are vital components of your HEC Paris MiM application. They demonstrate your practical skills and industry knowledge, making you a more attractive candidate for a MiM in Europe.

In the past, HEC Paris had a (kind of) strict restriction of only having 2 years’ professional experience or fewer. However, today I don’t see this restriction on their website anymore.

  • HEC Paris just states “open to high-level applicants with little to no professional experience”.
  • ESSEC states “little or no graduate work experience and are you under 32 years of age”.
  • ESCP states “Previous work experience, mastering additional languages, and international experience are each considered a plus that will support your application.”
  • EDHEC doesn’t mention any professional experience limitation or restriction.
  • INSEAD states “You do not need to have full-time professional experience prior to applying to the programme. However, some experience in a business context will be valued such as an internship or work in a charity/community environment.”

Every school has its own requirement, but in general having 1-3 years of professional experience puts you in the sweet spot for being able to take full advantage of the MiM program.

Importance of relevant work experience for an MiM in Europe

Even though work experience is optional, your work experience shows your understanding of the industry and your ability to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting.

By gaining hands-on experience, you develop practical skills that make you a more valuable asset to potential employers, and this is what the school wants to see as well, because at the end of the day, the school does care a lot about where its students will end up going after.

For this reason, whatever work experience you have, it’s important to be able to draw up a convincing story about why it’s relevant to your goals — or at the minimum, what your experiences made you learn about yourself, which made you pursue the career goals you’re pursuing (even if they’re different from your past experiences).

Leveraging internships and part-time jobs

My first ever professional video shoot as a part-time freelance video creator.

Internships and part-time jobs play a significant role in showcasing your experience and commitment to your career goals, particularly when they are directly or indirectly related to your goals.

When discussing these experiences, emphasise the growth and learning opportunities you've had, highlighting the skills you've acquired and how they relate to the MiM program. Share real stories of your experiences, and how you grew as a result of them.

As an example, when applying for HEC Paris, I mentioned about my part-time freelance work experience as a video editor for a local marketing and advertising agency, and how that links with my future goals of working in marketing.

Transferable skills and leadership potential

An essential aspect of your professional experience is the transferable, soft skills you've developed, such as problem-solving, communication, and teamwork.

Be sure to identify these key skills and provide examples of how you've applied them in the workplace. This is important because it shows the school that you’re someone that is aware of your strengths, and knows how to leverage them to get ahead.

Additionally, highlight any leadership roles you've held, as they demonstrate your ability to take charge and make an impact in your chosen field. For top schools like HEC, leadership potential is highly important. Make sure you highlight yours as well as you can do.

Again, make sure to mention real stories, with real emotions and characters, in your essays about your leadership potential. Talk more about the leadership experiences you’ve had instead of leadership experiences of others that you’ve learnt from.

Your CV or resume

All of your experiences need to go into your CV.

  • Extracurricular Activities and Leadership

Show the value of your extracurricular activities

Participating in extracurricular activities reflects your ability to balance various commitments and develop crucial soft skills. Engaging in such pursuits enhances teamwork, communication, and adaptability, making you a more versatile and attractive candidate for the MiM program.

You want to make sure that you communicate about the different extracurriculars that you’ve participated in. Make sure to include:

  • What activities you did
  • What impact did they have on others
  • What impact did they have on you
  • What skills you built (hard and soft skills) as a result of participating in those activities

Include examples of impactful extracurriculars

get my score mim essay

Some examples of impactful extracurricular activities include volunteering for a cause you're passionate about and participating in clubs related to your professional interests.

These experiences not only demonstrate your dedication to personal growth but also allow you to develop valuable connections and a broader perspective on the world, which is incredibly useful in the business world.

Moreover, impactful extracurriculars also show how much of a community-minded person you are — how you can contribute back to your community, whether that is a professional or a personal community.

Demonstrate leadership skills and potential

To further strengthen your application, highlight leadership roles you've held within extracurricular activities, such as club president or event coordinator.

These experiences showcase your ability to take initiative, motivate others, and make a positive impact on your community. Don't forget to mention any new projects or events you've initiated, as they further emphasize your leadership potential and commitment to making a difference.

I believe that this is one of the most important things that HEC Paris in particular looks for. You don’t have to show leadership skills just through formal leadership experiences; you can also show them through initiatives that you’ve taken by yourself.

For example, in my essays, I spoke about how I recorded my own music, how I started the video department in the media club on my campus, how I worked as a freelance video editor. I never held any formal leadership positions in college, but these initiatives helped me stand out.

  • International Experiences

Importance of International Experiences in MiM Applications

If there’s one thing that top MiM programs (especially HEC, ESSEC, INSEAD) all want to see, it’s international experiences in your profile.

These programs are international in nature, with students from all over the world, and they prepare you for an international career in which you’ll work with people people from all over the world, and they want to see that you’re ready for such an environment.

International experiences such as the ones listed below enhance your profile by giving you a global mindset, making you more adaptable, and give you unique perspectives — all of which top MiM schools want to see.

Types of International Experiences to Highlight

Standing in front of the river in Lauf, Germany, during a school exchange program.

Study abroad programs

These can include semesters abroad or summer school programs. They can also include attending short language study programs. Having had such experiences can highly impact your admission chances.

When I applied to HEC Paris for the MiM, I had already done the HEC Paris Summer School in luxury management. Since my career goals after the MiM were also in the marketing field, the summer school experience made a lot of sense to my application story. I was also a part of a school exchange program with a German school at age 14. I’m sure both of these experiences added to my application profile greatly.

If you have study abroad programs, you should think about how they impacted you, what they made you realize about yourself or the world, and how they add to your application story in a cohesive way, by aligning with your goals and other experiences.

Internships or work experience in a foreign country

These are equally, if not more impactful than study abroad experiences for admission into top MiM programs.

Just as before, the main objective of doing an MiM program from a top school is to develop an international career. Having had international work experiences beforehand is a great way to show signs of your readiness for a more impactful international career in the future.

Volunteering or community service projects overseas

This is a classic way of showcasing not only your international experiences, mindset and motivation, but also your ability and mindset to contribute back to society.

If you are still in college, there are plenty of associations and opportunities that allow you to do this over the summer. One of them I’ve heard of is AIESEC .

International conferences or competitions

Being invited to, presenting at, or simply attending international conferences or competitions is a high-impact way to showcase not only your international experiences, but also your academic rigour.

Travel experiences

get my score mim essay

Leisure international travel experiences with your family or friends are also a way to show your international experiences — but the important thing here to talk about what you learnt through those experiences rather than simply what you did.

Emphasizing Cultural Awareness and Adaptability

Navigating different cultural environments can be challenging, but it's also a fantastic opportunity to grow as an individual and broaden your horizons. Showcasing your adaptability and cultural awareness is key to strengthening your MiM at HEC Paris application.

Overcoming cultural challenges

Think about the cultural challenges you faced during your international experiences, and how you successfully overcame them. Perhaps you had to navigate a language barrier, adapt to local customs, or collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds. Reflect on these challenges and share the strategies you used to handle them effectively.

For instance, during my summer school program in France, I initially struggled a lot with connecting with people and with the nuances of European culture. However, by actively engaging in conversations with my classmates, participating in events, and immersing myself in the experience by letting go of some of my inhibitions, I eventually became more comfortable and confident in this new environment.

This helped me a lot when I first came to HEC Paris for my master’s degree.

Gaining cultural insights

International experiences often come with valuable lessons and insights that can shape your personal and professional development. Think about the insights you gained from your time abroad, and how they have influenced your perspective on the world and your career aspirations.

For example, a volunteering experience in Southeast Asia can expose you to the challenges faced by underprivileged communities, and make you realize the importance of social responsibility in business. This insight might broaden your worldview and also influence your career goals by inspiring you to seek opportunities to make a positive impact in the global community.

Remember, when emphasizing your cultural awareness and adaptability, it's crucial to be authentic and showcase how your international experiences have genuinely contributed to your personal growth and prepared you for the MiM program.

Showcasing Language Skills

Language skills are invaluable assets in today's interconnected world, and they can be particularly beneficial for those pursuing an MiM in Europe, due to the diversity of languages in the region. By highlighting your proficiency in foreign languages and the experiences that contributed to your linguistic abilities, you can make your application stand out, and showcase yourself as an ideal candidate for an international MiM program.

Demonstrating language proficiency

If you've learned a foreign language or improved your skills through your international experiences, be sure to emphasize this in your application. Discuss how your language abilities can contribute to your success in the MiM in Europe program and your future career goals.

Language immersion experiences

If you've participated in language immersion programs or taken language courses abroad, be sure to mention these experiences. Discuss the benefits of these programs and how they have improved your language skills.

By showcasing your language skills and the experiences that have contributed to your linguistic abilities, you can demonstrate your readiness to excel in an MiM in Europe program and your potential to thrive in an increasingly globalized world. Remember to be authentic and specific about your language proficiency and the experiences that have shaped your linguistic journey.

Integrating International Experiences in Your Application

Effectively showcasing your international experiences in your MiM in Europe application is essential for making a strong impression on the admissions committee. Highlighting your global mindset and adaptability can help demonstrate your readiness to excel in a diverse, international environment.

Incorporating examples in your personal statement, essays, and CV

When discussing your international experiences, make sure to weave them into your personal statement, essays, and CV in a cohesive and meaningful way. Explain how these experiences have shaped your personal growth and align with your career goals.

For instance, in my application, I mentioned my school exchange program with a German school when I was 13. During this program, I lived with a German family for three weeks, and my German exchange partner stayed with my family in India for the same duration. Through this experience, I gained valuable insights into European culture and developed a deeper appreciation for the diversity of perspectives that exist within the global community.

Aligning your experiences with the MiM in Europe program's values and expectations

When showcasing your international experiences, make sure to align them with the values and expectations of the MiM in Europe program you're applying to. Demonstrate how these experiences have prepared you for the program's academic rigors and cultural diversity.

In my case, I emphasized how my exchange program experience helped me develop a strong foundation for cultural understanding and adaptability, qualities that are essential for success in an MiM in Europe program.

Using recommendation letters to reinforce your international background

Recommendation letters can provide additional credibility to your international experiences. Request letters from supervisors, professors, or mentors who have witnessed your growth and development during your time abroad.

In conclusion, by effectively integrating your international experiences into your MiM in Europe application, you can showcase your global mindset and demonstrate your readiness to succeed in a diverse and international environment.

  • Compelling Essays and Personal Statements

None of your incredible achievements really mean anything to the school if you’re unable to present them in a compelling way through your application essays.

And so, your application essays are arguably the most important part of your application to the MiM.

Firstly, you want to make sure that you’re addressing all of the essay prompts effectively. This means answering exactly the question that is asked (I know it sounds basic, but it’s easy to get distracted and go on a tangent). It also means answering the questions in a way that’s as impactful as possible.

To do that, you want to craft a compelling narrative in the form of a story that flows effectively. You want to make your essays as easy to read as possible, while including all of the relevant information in them.

You can do this by doing the following —

  • First, make sure to understand exactly what you want to include in your essay.
  • Outline the essay with bullet points, making sure it makes sense.
  • Start writing.

I’ve made a video in which I share my 5 top tips for writing application essays. You can watch it below.

I’ve also made a video in which I share and read out my own application essays when I applied to the MiM program at HEC Paris. You can watch that below as well.

  • Strong Letters of Recommendation

Choosing the right recommenders

When applying for an MiM in Europe, selecting the right recommenders can significantly impact your application. The ideal recommenders are those who know you well and can provide a comprehensive and personal account of your abilities and potential.

Professional or academic connections

Your recommenders should ideally be individuals with whom you have established a strong professional or academic relationship. They could be supervisors, managers, professors, or mentors who have witnessed your growth, accomplishments, and work ethic.

For example, when I applied for my MiM program, I asked my former manager from an internship and one of my favorite professors who had taught me in several courses to write recommendation letters. Both of them had a deep understanding of my skills, strengths, and aspirations, which allowed them to provide a detailed and personalized account of my potential as an MiM candidate.

Individuals who know you well

Choose recommenders who have had meaningful interactions with you and can speak to your character, work ethic, and ability to succeed in an MiM in Europe program. A strong recommendation from someone who knows you well is much more valuable than a generic letter from a high-ranking individual with whom you have limited interaction.

Tips for Obtaining Compelling Recommendation Letters

Providing context and guidance.

When requesting a recommendation letter, it's essential to provide your recommenders with context and guidance. Share your resume, transcripts, and a brief overview of your goals for the MiM in Europe program. This information will help them tailor their letters to best support your application.

Giving ample time for writing

Request recommendation letters well in advance of the application deadline. This will give your recommenders enough time to carefully consider their thoughts and craft a well-written, impactful letter.

What to Avoid When Requesting Recommendations

Generic letters.

Avoid requesting letters from individuals who cannot provide a personalized and detailed account of your abilities and potential. Generic letters can be easily spotted by the admissions committee and may not contribute positively to your application.

Last-minute requests

Do not wait until the last minute to request recommendation letters. Not only does this put unnecessary pressure on your recommenders, but it also reduces the likelihood of receiving a thoughtful and well-crafted letter that effectively supports your MiM in Europe application.

  • Language Proficiency

In an increasingly interconnected world, language proficiency is essential for professionals who aspire to succeed in a global business environment. As a candidate for an MiM in Europe, showcasing your language skills in your application can enhance your chances of admission and demonstrate your readiness to thrive in a diverse and international context.

Importance of Language Skills in a Global Business Environment

The greater your language skills, the better you’ll be able to take advantage of your MiM in Europe experience. In Europe especially, the more languages you speak, the greater will be your chances of getting a job, since this is something that companies

English proficiency for non-native speakers

As English is the primary language of instruction for many MiM programs in Europe, non-native speakers are often required to submit TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, or PTE scores to demonstrate their English proficiency. Meeting or exceeding the minimum score requirements is crucial for ensuring that you can effectively participate in the program and excel in your coursework.

However, you can be exempted from this requirement if you did your undergraduate studies in English. That is at least the case for HEC Paris, and might be the case for other MiM in Europe programs as well.

Additional language skills as a plus

In addition to English proficiency, knowledge of other languages can be a valuable asset in your MiM application. Additional language skills can demonstrate your adaptability and global mindset, which are essential qualities for success in the international business world.

For example, if you’re applying to an MiM program in France, having French language skills is definitely going to be an asset to your application. This is because you’ll be able to leverage more opportunities available to you in France, and schools know this.

Demonstrating Language Proficiency in the Application

Submitting test scores.

Include your English proficiency test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, or PTE) in your application, as well as any other relevant language certifications you may have. Make sure to double-check the specific requirements for the MiM in Europe program you are applying to, as some schools may have different score requirements or preferred tests.

Describing relevant experiences

In your application, highlight any experiences that have contributed to your language proficiency. This could include study abroad programs, language courses, or any other experiences that have allowed you to practice and improve your language skills.

For instance, when I applied for my MiM program, I mentioned my summer school experience in France. Even though the program was in English, having been in the French environment for a few weeks provided me with a deeper understanding of French culture and customs.

By showcasing your language and culture proficiency and relevant experiences in your MiM in Europe application, you can demonstrate your readiness to excel in an international environment and your potential to succeed in the global business world — and this is exactly what schools want to see in top applicants.

  • Preparing for the Interview

I’ve described my interview experience in the YouTube video below.

In general, be prepared to talk about your motivations, and answer any question about anything in your essays.

For this reason, I don’t recommend that you lie or fabricate things in your essays, because if you’re asked about them in your interview and they realise that you lied, it’ll be an instant rejection.

A Strong, Cohesive and Clear Application

In the video above, I talk about how you can build a cohesive and strong profile for an MiM in Europe application.

What are your goals for the MiM?

It cannot be understated how important it is to be very clear about your goals post-MiM. Your goals need to be:

  • Clear — this is what you want to do, and this is why.
  • Specific — these are the companies/positions you want to work in.
  • Realistic — this is how you’re well prepared for your goals.

You’ll be expected to detail your professional goals in your application essays. For more guidance on your application essays, you should look at my essay guide .

Ensuring consistency across all application components

This is one of the most important things in your application — making sure that it is consistent across all of your essays, your CV, personal statement, and recommendation letters.

Your story must come out strong and clear — this is why you want to do this specific MiM program , and these are your goals after your graduate.

The best applications are the ones where the admissions jury has a clear understanding of your motivation right from reading and studying the application, and the interview is used to simply verify and get a “vibe-check”.

Proofreading and reviewing your application

This one is a no-brainer. Finish your application before time, so that you can proofread and review it a final time before you submit, so that you can catch obvious errors or mistakes that you’ve made.

In conclusion, here’s what you need to make a strong and compelling case for one of the top MiM programs in Europe, like the one at HEC Paris, ESSEC, ESCP, INSEAD, EDHEC, or others.

  • Academic Background & Test Scores
  • Standardised test scores (GMAT/GRE)
  • A Strong and Cohesive Application

If you found this guide helpful, it would be great if you could pass it on to someone you think might benefit from it as well.

INSEAD Master’s in Management (MIM) Essay Questions, Tips & Deadlines [2019 – 2020]

INSEAD 2019-2020 MIM application essay tips and deadlines

One of the top European business schools has this year joined the MIM market. Enter stage right INSEAD with its new Master in Management . Currently accepting applications for its 2020 intake, INSEAD’s entry into the pre-experience market is a signal that there’s not only a demand for this early career degree, but there’s much traditionally MBA and EMBA focused schools can gain from having the recent graduate student segment on their campuses.

Although the INSEAD MIM offers a different course offering and structure than its more established MBA , as one would expect, they are looking to recruit students who value their values and who have ambitious goals. INSEAD is known as ‘ The Business School for the World ’, and in their MIMs they’re hoping to find business students who have an interest in the world around them, and a desire to contribute to it. As one might expect, they’ve put an emphasis on the internationalism of the programme, which offers “…a truly global experience…with international classmates…[and the chance to] travel across continents…”. They are looking to build a “dynamic and diverse student body” and want to see students who thrive in such an environment. Unsurprisingly, international motivation is one of the key admissions criteria, along with academic performance and ability to contribute.

The application requires three ‘getting to know you’ essays, all of which have a word limit. Do take careful note of the guidance provided about this:

“Respecting this word limit is an important exercise to see how you express your ideas in a concise way…”

Don’t let the limited word count give you a false sense of ease – it’s much trickier to give an overview of your career ambitions in 100 words than it is in 500, so clarity and brevity are key.

INSEAD Master’s in Management application essays

Insead mim essay #1.

How would you introduce yourself? (Maximum 200 words)

This has the potential to be a fun question as it’s your chance to tell the admissions committee what’s unique and interesting about you and to display your personality. This question gives you the opportunity to introduce who you are outside of what’s on your CV, so make sure not to repeat what they already know about you from the application form. Think about approaching this as you might do a speed dating event where you have only a few minutes to convince the person sitting across from you that you’re interesting, well-rounded, and with a lot to contribute to the conversation (no pressure!).

INSEAD MIM essay #2

Tell us what you have been doing since graduating from secondary education and what motivated your choices? (Maximum 200 words)

This is a tricky question as it requires you to reflect on what you’ve been doing since starting your university studies. The admissions committee will want to understand the thought process behind the decisions you’ve made during this time, and the drivers that have propelled you to pursue your path. Make sure not to use this question as a space to rehash your entire CV, but rather an opportunity to explain the reasoning behind pivotal choices. Have your decisions been strategic and part of a bigger plan? Have you been good at taking up opportunities as they come? Your answer will help the admission committee be able to connect the dots and understand you better.

INSEAD MIM essay #3

Share your short and long-term career aspirations with a MIM from INSEAD. (Maximum 100 words)

INSEAD is clear about the type of leader they’re looking for. They want “…leaders who transform business and society” and consider MIMs “the next generation of well-rounded, agile-thinking and innovative individuals who are ready to make a positive impact in today’s society.” When presenting your career goals , think about whether you are or want to be this person, and if so, how you will go about doing that. With only 100 words to use this answer needs to be succinct. Use the space to indicate your target companies/industries and roles, the motivation behind these ambitions, and the impact you hope to have. Make sure to provide thoughts on how specifically the INSEAD MIM will support your goals – this could include specific courses, extracurricular activities, or something around the community/network. But remember, be specific.

INSEAD MIM essay #4 (optional)

Is there anything else that was not covered in your application that you would like to share with the Admissions Committee?

Use this question only if you have vital information about your candidacy that you haven’t been able to include elsewhere in your application. Examples of acceptable material include providing context for low grades/test score or a gap in your education history. Steer clear of using this space to reiterate how passionate you are about the INSEAD MIM or how you’re the perfect fit. If you’ve done your job well through the rest of the application, they’ll already know this.

Programme Director Thibault Seguret and Global Director of Admissions & Financial Aid Virginie Fougea make it clear they want you, the applicant, to “ be yourself ”. So they’re looking for genuine, personal, unmanufactured insights into who you are as a person and what you’ll bring to your MIM class and the INSEAD community. Don’t write what you think the admissions committee wants to hear, write what is truthful – your truth – and give them a taster to who you are, and who you want to be with the help of the INSEAD MIM degree.

Unsure of how to illustrate your narrative or make sure it has the impact you want it to have? Get in touch with one of our admissions consultants to discuss how they can help you tell your story.

How to write MiM essays?

Karan Sharma

Why should you opt for MiM?

Importance of mim essay.

Most of us are aware of MBA or Masters of Business Administration but perhaps many people are still not comprehending the specifics of the relatively new managerial course – MiM.

So, strap up and read on to know what exactly MiM is, why students should opt for it and how to write MiM essays – the most crucial aspect of the entire application process to the top MiM programs!

What is MiM?

Master’s in Management or MiM is a specialized program that started in Europe around 20 years ago. The MiM program , which typically lasts between ten months to two years, is a specially designed program that offers theoretical groundwork to the students to kickstart their careers in business.

So, MiM is now being opted by the graduates who want to make their future in marketing, economics, finance, consulting, entrepreneurship, or other business fields.

What further appeals to the students is the fact that prior work experience is not mandatory and the selection is based on GMAT or GRE scores, plus the quality of the application material submitted. The students can study this program at top-notch business schools in Europe, Asia, Australia and Canada.

Even though MiM is a relatively new course, it is garnering popularity among graduates who want to jumpstart their careers without prior work experience.

The theoretical course is more affordable for getting a job in an entry-level position like an Analyst or Graduate Trainee. Also, managerial roles can be achieved in Finance, Marketing, Consulting, Corporate Strategy, Business Development, Accounting, Business Intelligence, Sustainability, Sales, and many other entrepreneurial fields after gaining relevant work experience.

Moreover, in MiM, one can easily switch the streams. Additionally, passionate and interested students can later pursue Ph.D. programs for further research.

Multiple Fortune 500 companies like Siemens, Deutsche, and McKinsey & Company actively hire Masters in Management degree graduates. So, rest assured of your career prospects!

Most of the applicants are anticipated to have outstanding GMAT or GRE scores, and excellent academic results. Apart from these scores, the international applicants are required to demonstrate their grasp of English language through TOEFL or IELTS.

But, what sets an individual apart?

It’s the MiM essay! This aspect is given utmost importance as it is based on the personalization of each applicant thereby making it unique. An authentic essay is a factor that differentiates between the other applications and marks a glaring distinction between an outstanding candidate and the ordinary.  What makes an essay stand out are each applicant’s personal, academic and non-academic accomplishments.

Key tips on writing a MiM essay

The following are a few key tips on nailing your MiM essay:

  • It should be kept in mind that an individual should remain true to themselves and not try to replicate others’ work. For instance, if it is a goals essay, clearly convey your short-term, middle-term and long-term goals
  • It is always better to have someone double-check your essay for spelling and grammar. For this purpose, it is best to resort to a professional editor
  • The language of the essay should be precise and clear. It should make the reader curious about the applicant
  • Each business school has its essay questions but mostly the topics are based on individuals’ strengths, what they have learned so far, their career goals, and their desire to join the particular college
  • The word limit should be kept in mind and other rules pertaining to the structure of the essay should be followed

Lastly, remember that there is no perfect essay nor it is an essay writing competition, but it is pivotal for the selection process. In order to craft stellar essays which impress the AdComs, it is best to resort to professional study abroad consultants like LilacBuds because they know what the AdComs are evaluating you on.

Be it an essay, recommendation letters, or transcripts, their assistance can make you secure the cutting edge to get through the selection process.

How to prepare for your IESE MiM application

If you are a recent graduate looking to kickstart your career through a Master in Management, you know how important it is to connect with a school that will open the door for your future. Deciding which school is for you might be one of the most relevant decisions at this point in your professional development. Understanding the application process is the first step in the journey.

How can you best prepare for your IESE MiM application? Here are some tips and guidelines to have in mind when approaching the application –

Finding a good fit

When applying to a school it is essential that you get to know its culture and the people that make up the school. This is to ensure that you can thrive and excel in such an environment. It is a process of discovery that you need to go through with the school to ensure a “good fit”.

A great way to start is to do a little introspection and think about your motivations, desires, and expectations. What do you want to get out of your MiM experience? Why are you attracted to IESE? Make sure your application speaks about this.

Understand your values

IESE’s mission is to  educate business leaders with a general management approach guided by a global mindset and people-centered vision . It is the bedrock on which the school is built, strongly informs its culture and is something that we want to see reflected in our student body. What are your values and how is this aligned with the school’s?

There are many ways where you can demonstrate the values of the school.  You can share an example of where you went above and beyond, how you made a difference in your community or some other aspect of your life inside or outside of a professional setting

Highlight your essence

We understand that to ask you to bottle-up your essence in an application process is a difficult task. Make sure you take advantage of every opportunity to show us who you are (yes, that may include your peculiar hobbies as well!). How you can stand out is not only through your test scores or grades but through your personality, interests, and values – make sure you share all of what makes you, you with us.

Ultimately, we want to get to know you beyond the numbers or data that makes up the rest of your application. We hope you’re encouraged to show your personality!

Reflect on your essay

The application requirements such as standardized test results make sure we understand your academic background but that does not make up the complete picture of who you are. The essay section allows you the chance to complement your application and complete the picture of who you truly are. Essay questions can vary every year, but generally here are a few questions you can ask yourself to help prepare for just about any essay topic that comes your way.

Ask yourself the following:

  • What makes me  unique ? Is this clearly demonstrated in my CV or in other parts of the application?
  • How do my personal and/or professional experiences make me the right fit for  this particular business school, rather than any business school?
  • What are some concrete examples of leadership I have demonstrated? And how do I communicate them with passion and personality?
  • How can I tell my story while  avoiding clichés and not merely listing accomplishments? How can I make it personal, and perhaps even funny?

Take note of key deadlines

The Master in Management program at IESE follows a rolling admission policy, which means that we do not have a specific deadline for applying to IESE. As class sizes are limited and scholarships are allocated on a merit basis, we recommend you apply as soon as you are ready. We review applications on a continuous basis and aim to provide a decision on applications approximately 4-5 weeks after an application is submitted, if all the requirements are met. Do note the payment deadlines on our website as well; you may want to take those into consideration when deciding when to apply. You can read a detailed description of the application process here .

Final advice

A good application is one through which you can present yourself in a clear and authentic manner. The admissions committee wants to get to know you, so make sure that the stories that you share are meaningful. Make sure that you portray the real you in a consistent way and that you communicate your accomplishments and goals for the future.

We hope you enjoy getting to know yourself a bit better as much as we enjoy getting to know you!

MiM Essay Reviews : What to look for In Consultancy

If you’re considering studying abroad and are in search of a reliable study abroad consultancy, asking the right questions is crucial. Trust me, I’ve been through the process, and I want to share the essential inquiries you should make when choosing a consultancy. So, let’s dive in!

  • “Can you tell me about your experience and track record?” It’s important to start by understanding the consultancy’s experience and track record. Ask them about the number of years they have been operating and the success rate of their previous students. This will give you an idea of their expertise and credibility in the study abroad field.
  • “What services do you offer?” Each consultancy may provide different services, so it’s essential to know what they offer. Ask about the range of assistance they provide, such as help with university selection, application guidance, essay editing, visa support, financial planning, and pre-departure orientation. Make sure their services align with your specific needs.
  • “How do you guide students in choosing the right university and program?” Understanding the consultancy’s approach to helping you choose the right university and program is crucial. Ask them how they get to know your interests, goals, and academic background. Inquire about the resources they provide for exploring institutions, including information on rankings, curriculum, faculty, and student support services.
  • “Can you provide references or testimonials from previous clients?” Asking for references or testimonials from previous clients is a great way to get insights into the consultancy’s track record and student experiences. Request this information to gauge the satisfaction levels and success stories of those who have used their services.
  • “How do you assist with the application process?” The application process can be overwhelming, so it’s important to understand how the consultancy will guide you through it. Ask about their involvement in reviewing and editing application materials, including essays, recommendation letters, and resumes. Get clarity on their approach to meeting deadlines and handling documentation.
  • “How do you support students with standardized tests?” Standardized tests like the GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, or IELTS are often required for admission. Find out how the consultancy will support you in preparing for these tests. Ask about their resources, study materials, and strategies for improving your scores. Also, inquire about how they help you manage any test-related challenges.
  • “How do you assist with visa applications and other logistics?” Visa applications and other logistics can be overwhelming, so it’s crucial to have support in these areas. Inquire about the consultancy’s guidance on visa application requirements, documentation, interview preparation, and post-acceptance formalities. Also, ask about their assistance in securing accommodation, health insurance, and other essential arrangements.
  • “What is your pricing structure?” Understanding the consultancy’s pricing structure is important to ensure it fits your budget. Ask about their fees, payment plans, and any additional charges. Make sure to clarify what services are included in the package and if there are any hidden costs.
  • “How do you ensure ongoing support during the study abroad experience?” Studying abroad can come with its own set of challenges, so ongoing support is crucial. Ask the consultancy about the level of support they offer during your time abroad. Inquire about their assistance with academic challenges, cultural adaptation, and any emergencies that may arise.
  • “Can I speak with a current or former student who used your services?” Requesting the opportunity to connect with a current or former student who has used the consultancy’s services can provide valuable insights. It allows you to hear firsthand about their experiences and the support they received.

Remember, asking these questions will help you make an informed choice and ensure you have a reliable study abroad consultant with you in your journey.

Conclusion:

Today, as I reflect on my journey from being aimless to earning admission into my dream MIM college, I cannot help but feel overwhelming gratitude for MIM Essay.

Their unwavering support, personalized guidance, and genuine care played a pivotal role in making my dream a reality. I am indebted to them for their tireless efforts, their willingness to go above and beyond, and their invaluable expertise.

This letter should be enclosed in a signed, sealed envelope and included with your transcript.

Test Scores and Waivers

Upload an  unofficial , scanned copy of your test score (no more than five years old) directly into the online application.  Official scores only need to be submitted if you are admitted to the program.

GMAT Program Code:  JT7-G0-45 GRE Program Code:  4430

Students must submit a test score for the GMAT, a test score for the GRE, or proof of completion of the GMAC Business Fundamentals Statistics Module . Students may submit more than one of the above. The requirement for GMAT or GRE test scores or completion of the GMAC Business Fundamentals Statistics Module is waived for all MiM applicants with an undergraduate GPA of 3.2 or above. Please note that the waiver applies only to MiM applicants — not to applicants of the Full-time, Flex, Flex Online, or MBA Advanced Access programs. For students who have an undergraduate GPA of 3.2 or above but limited quantitative undergraduate or post-graduate coursework, we recommend that you take the GMAT or GRE test or complete the GMAC Business Fundamentals Statistics Module.

* For transcripts not recorded on the 4.0 GPA scale, Admissions will need applicants to submit an official translation of their transcript verifying their overall academic performance as equivalent to or greater than a 3.2 GPA in order to be eligible for the GMAT or GRE score waiver. For translation services, we recommend WES .

Application Fee

Application fee waivers will be automatically granted to candidates who are active duty, reservists, or veterans of the United States military, and Georgetown University undergraduates and alumni. We are also pleased to offer application fee waivers for applicants who apply after attending select admissions events.

All other applicants must submit a $175 non-refundable application fee, payable online via credit card or e-check. Please do not send a personal check or money order.

Non-U.S. College or University Academic records

Required for International Applicants

Students who have attended or graduated from a non-U.S. college or university should follow these instructions:

  • We require that all transcripts be submitted in English. Most major foreign universities will issue official transcripts in English themselves. However, if your institution is unable to do this, you are responsible for providing Georgetown McDonough with an English translation of your transcript. Your translator must certify that the original documentation was received in a sealed envelope from your university or issuing institution. After translating, your translator should enclose both the original (non-translated) and the certified translation in an envelope and seal and sign the envelope. The transcript should be enclosed in a signed, sealed envelope and submitted by mail to Georgetown McDonough. As an alternative to an individual translator providing certified translations, international applicants who attend institutions outside of the United States may submit their transcripts in the form of a credential evaluation. While this service is not required, we recommend the World Education Services (WES) ICAP evaluations . Credential evaluations may take the place of official transcripts, as long as they come to Georgetown McDonough directly from the evaluation service provider and include a copy of the official transcripts you had evaluated.
  • We require proof a degree was conferred and the date of graduation. Some international transcripts do not explicitly state that a degree was conferred or the date of graduation. If your transcript does not explicitly state that a degree was conferred or the date of graduation, you should obtain an official letter from your university indicating the date of your graduation and the degree conferral date. This letter should be enclosed in a signed, sealed envelope and included with your transcript.

Required for qualifying applicants noted below or required if requested

Applicants who fit the criteria below are required to upload an unofficial English Language Proficiency Exam score report to the online application.

  • Non-U.S. citizens
  • Non-U.S. permanent residents
  • Applicants who have not obtained a four-year or advanced degree from a university where the only primary medium of instruction was English

Please note: If you meet any of the following criteria, you are not required to submit a TOEFL/IELTS score:

  • You have worked full-time for the last 3+ years in an English-speaking country.

Introduction to MiM at SDA Bocconi

Coming soon…

What is a good GMAT score for MiM at SDA Bocconi?

Short Answer – The average GMAT score at ESCP is 700 for the last entering class. If you score above 700, you have a fair shot and you will receive an encouraging response to your profile evaluation from the admission committee.

Long Answer – There is no such thing as a safe score, higher is always better. In our years of consulting experience, we have seen our clients with 640 getting selected into top schools like INSEAD and on the other hand, someone with a 770 getting rejected too. A good benchmark that we advise all our clients to beat is the average GMAT score of the last entering class as mentioned in the Class profile published every year. Scoring above the average gets you a fair shot;

“The higher your score, the better is it for your interview or admission chance.”

If you plan to apply with a score that is below the average, then you are starting a fight with one hand tied behind your back or, let’s say, you are starting a few yards behind your competitors. You can definitely catch up in other sections of the application by writing outstanding essays or performing really well in an interview later. But it is always nice to start ahead of the competitor. A higher GMAT score helps one gain a competitive advantage.

“What if you are from the over represented Indian or Asian Pool?”

The over-represented candidate pool of Indian or Chinese applicants usually goes through a rigorous preparation process for GMAT, with a lot of Indian applicants scoring quite high. Hence, the overall competition and the Average score for this diaspora goes up by a few notches. That is why we recommend candidates within the most over-represented profiles to shoot at least 20 points higher than the school’s class profile average.

For the long term, there is a double degree program, a joint program that allows students to study at the top two business & economic schools and receive two diplomas one from each university, and for a short duration, there are exchange programs.

Specializations & Electives Offered

Faqs about mim at sda bocconi, i’m interested in the msc in im and in being part of a double degree program, but i don’t know which one to choose. what are the main differences.

The MSc in IM offer three different Double Degree programs: the regular program, the CEMS MIM program and the China MIM program. All programs will grant you the Bocconi MSc in IM degree plus another degree. The three programs offer different kinds of experiences:

  • The regular program is particularly suitable for those students who have strong preferences for a particular location/university.
  • The CEMS MIM program is suggested for those students who are more interested in the program and in being part of a multinational “club” of students, rather than the location/institution to which they will be assigned to. At the end of the program, all CEMS students will have the same degree, regardless of the institution where they spend their second year.
  • The China MIM program is suggested for those students who have a strong interest in China. As a matter of fact, all students should have such an interest in this country: China is a formidable economic force in the international arena and current or future managers could not ignore the impact of China on the global business landscape. By allowing students to live in this country for one year, this program provides a full immersion in a different social and cultural context.

There are also some other basic differences in terms of:

  • Timing of application : The applications for the special programs (CEMS/China) should be made during the admissions process. The applications for the regular program will be possible only after enrollment, during the first year.
  • Period abroad : In the regular program and in the CEMS MIM program, students spend their second year abroad. In the China MIM program, students spend their first year abroad.
  • Individual/Class experience : In the regular program, Bocconi students are not part of a special class of students: they select and attend courses together with all the other students in the host university. In the CEMS MIM program, Bocconi students are part of the CEMS students: they attend courses together with other CEMS students from other institutions and with local students of the host university. In the China MIM program, students are part of a special class made up of other Bocconi students, LUISS students and local Fudan students. Courses are taught by Bocconi, LUISS, and Fudan instructors.

I am currently working, can I attend IM as a part-time student?

During their first year, students are expected to attend classes and to participate in class activities, which – in many courses – are important components of the final grades. In the first-year courses there will be no distinction between attending and not-attending students in terms of exams. Students that, for any reason, decide not to attend classes or participate in the required activities will likely be penalized in their grades. For the same reason, curricular internships must take place only upon completion of students’ course work in their first year of study

There are different options related to the MSc in IM. How do I express my choices in the online application?

In the online application, you can express five choices (ranked in terms of your preferences) from among the different MSc programs offered at Bocconi. In the case of the MSc in IM, you have three options: IM, CEMS MIM and China MIM. Each of these options is independent and you can select more than one. For example, if you are interested in both the MSc in IM and the MSc in Finance, you could express the following choices: 1) CEMS MIM; 2) IM; 3) Finance; etc. .

I am interested in one of the special programs (CEMS MIM and/or China MIM). If not admitted, will I be considered for the regular IM program?

Only if you also select the IM option. If you select only the CEMS MIM and/or China MIM option and you are not admitted, then you will not be considered for the regular IM program.

A common misconception among GMAT test givers is that personal, one-on-one coaching yields more focused training and hence more effective learning which translates to higher scores. On the contrary, the classroom ambience enables interaction with quality students and provides a platform to discuss challenging questions. I realised that it is these interactions that bridge the gap between a 640 and a 760. Spoon feeding just doesn't help in aptitude exams like GMAT; the way it has helped us so far in our school exams. Mitul's study material is so exhaustive and classes are so well designed that even students weak in math are able to cope despite the comparatively bigger batch size. In fact I would recommend to go for bigger batches only because of the associated energy level & fun during the sessions. Your understanding of the subject has nothing got to do with the batch size.

Being an engineer (plus a Tamilian), I always had a myth that my math is very strong and that I don't require any training in GRE; just self study from the material given by seniors would suffice. However, this myth was broken when I started preparing for the exam. Mitul's approach in quant is so logical & different from the conventional & mechanical ways in which we have been studying maths in school & college. Initially the math topics seem easy thinking it's the same stuff that we have been doing. But you realize the difference when you start solving questions. So I would definitely recommend going for MG Test Prep as they are very different from conventional coaching centres

I had an amazing experience with MGprep. It is very different from any other traditional GMAT classes where they provide pre-recorded classes. The best part about MGprep is that it is a founder led class and they provide you round the clock support. If you've already planned to go for a Masters program, then invest in the MGprep services asap. No point delaying it. Joining early really helps!

The overall experience with MGprep was absolutely fantastic. I owe it to Rohit who was assigned my application. What has made me a fan of MiM-essay is that I could get in touch with Rohit with almost any doubts and he would reply within hours. We had established a communication mechanism via both whatsapp and email and I was able to throw all my questions at him and he would patiently answer all of them.

My decision to choose MGprep was hugely influenced by the reviews of previous students. And truthfully the reviews weren't lying. For me, investing in the Complete package for GMAT was definitely worth it. I thought I could definitely prepare on my own but when I started with the prep I realised it's not that easy. I tried other tutors as well but I was not getting specific attention towards my queries. I joined MGprep as over here you get personalised sessions directly from the founders with an extensive doubt solving session.

MGprep is a GMAT course study site that offers 110+ hours of training which is the highest in India. They provide 1-on-1 teaching from a tutor and with tons of free resources. My overall experience with Mitul Sir was excellent due to his guidance and support. I was able to score 740 in my GMAT and get into my dream school.

When searching for a course to help me with the GMAT, I looked at a variety of low-cost alternatives to MGprep, but I am so happy I made the choice to invest in MGprep. I seriously don't know what I would do without the huge amount of practice tests, live classes, and practice questions. I'll admit, I'm a bad test taker, and I needed a lot of practice. I did their practice questions for hours a day, studying for almost 3 months, and I never ran out of material and finally I was able to score 720 in my GMAT and got an admit from Rutgers.

I really enjoyed this course and would highly recommend it despite the steeper price in comparison to other courses! Having a real person explain things and answer questions as he goes was incredibly helpful and made class way more interesting and interactive! This was definitely a game changer, as no one really wants to sit down for 3 hours straight. Mitul sir is the absolute best and was super patient in further explaining the explanations from the official guide I didn't quite understand. His tips for achieving as many points as possible past the 700 mark were also super helpful!

Card image

Improved from 620 to 710.Mitul sir is an expert at what he does. He trains you to tackle each and every pattern on the GMAT.Quant : Questions were great . Explanations made sense and were crisp. Verbal : completed the tutorial in 5 days. That's amazing. It's comprehensive. The way Mitul teaches sentence correction is perhaps the best I have seen .Customer support: within 12 hours all your queries are answered.I would recommend the product to anybody , who is trying to improve their score at a faster pace.

Overall, I thought that the MGprep was very helpful in my preparation process. Their live classes outlining the specific topics covered on the test were done at the exact right level of detail and the example problems were helpful in showing the different ways that a particular topic can be covered. MGprep maths question bank had a lot of very good questions. I thought the verbal question bank also contained a lot of helpful questions. That said, I think for the price charged, MGprep was the single best product (that I came across) for both learning the concepts tested and practicing the topics through the question bank. I also utilized one of the MGprep study schedules and thought that it was incredibly well-thought out and the key to my 750 score. I highly recommend the MGprep.

Frequently Asked Questions

We don’t have any concept of a fixed start date or an end date. Every class is a stand-alone class. A particular class has no relevance with the previous or the next class. So, whenever you start that becomes the first class of your cycle. You need to complete one full cycle of classes. Every quant & verbal class is repeated after every 2-3 months. Hence a missed class can be covered very soon. The cyclic nature of classes will give you the flexibility of starting the program anytime as per your schedule.

Live Classes are held twice a week (every Saturday and Sunday). The Verbal session is of 2 hours (11 am to 1 pm), whereas the Quant session is of 3 hours (3 pm to 6 pm).

Although we expect you to attend the Live Classes as per your schedule, we understand that you might miss some classes due to unavoidable circumstances. If that’s the case, you will get the recordings of the classes that you have missed after joining the program.

Apart from having a decent internet connection (1.5 Mbps download and upload speed at least) and a desktop/laptop, learners should have the Zoom desktop app installed on their device. We advise that you log in using a desktop or laptop for the best user experience. Students using smartphones or tablets might not be able to view the screen properly, especially the equations in quant classes.

The concept of Live Classes is to provide a real classroom experience to the students, therefore students can raise their doubts and have them answered instantaneously by the faculty.

Extremely close. Our instructors have a combined experience of 46+ years of teaching the GRE. They all have extensive knowledge of what the GRE tests and what it doesn't. So, you can rest assured that you are in very good hands.
