What is Nutrition? What do you know about Nutrition? You are going to be divided up into groups. In your groups you will have 5 minutes to write down as much as you can about nutrition.
Nutrition Terms • Nutrition- The sum of the processes by which humans, animals, and plants consume and use food. • Nutrients- A substance in food that helps with body processes. • Calorie- A unit of energy produced by food.
Nutrition Terms • MyPyramid is a guide that recommends the kinds and amounts of foods to eat each day and emphasizes physical activity. • The Dietary Guidelines are recommendations for diet choices among healthy Americans who are two years of age or older.

The Food Groups • Grains • Vegetables • Fruits • Milk • Meats and Beans • Oils
Food Groups: Grains • Consume At least 3 oz. of whole-grain products. • Good sources of vitamins, minerals, and complex carbohydrates. • They provide fiber, iron, and vitamin B. • A 1 oz serving equals 1 slice of bread, or 1 cup of ready-to-eat cereal, or ½ cup of cooked cereal, rice, or pasta.
Food Groups: Vegetables • Consume 2 ½ cups each day • Low in fat and calories • A good source of vitamins A and C and minerals. • Eat a variety of vegetables. • Making sure that you eat many different colors ensures variety.
Food Groups: Fruits • Consume 2 cups of fruit each day. • Low in fat and calories. • They are a good source of vitamins A and C, Potassium, and carbohydrates. • Choose a variety if fruits weather they are fresh, frozen, canned, or dried. • Limit consumption of fruit juice.
Food Groups: Milk • Consume 3 cups of milk, yogurt, and other dairy products. • Good sources of calcium and protein. • Select low-fat or fat-free versions of milk products.
Food Groups: Meat and Beans • Consume at least 5 ½ ounces a day • The food group involves meat, poultry, eggs, fish, beans, peas, nuts, and seeds. • Good sources of protein, B vitamins, iron, and zinc • Choose low-fat or lean meats and bake, broil, or grill the food instead of frying it.
Food Groups: Oils • Teens need to consume at least 5 teaspoons a day. • This includes nuts, fish, cooking oil, and salad dressing. • Provide essential fatty acids and vitamin E.
Macronutrients • Macronutrients are chemical elements that humans must consume in large quantities. • A Carbohydrate is a nutrient that is the main source of energy for the body. • A Protein is a nutrient that is needed for growth and to build and repair body tissues. • A Fat is a nutrient that provides energy and helps the body store and use vitamins.
Micronutrients • Micronutrients are nutrients required by humans and other living things throughout life in small quantities which the body cannot produce. • A Vitamin is a nutrient that helps the body use carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. • A Mineral is a nutrient that regulates many chemical reactions in the body.
