IELTS Writing Test

The IELTS writing   test is the module that many students find the most difficult.

This is because in a short space of time (one hour) you have to write an essay and a graph (academic module) or a letter (general training module).

At IELTS buddy we'll provide you with top tips and strategies to get the score you need in the test.

Strategies for the IELTS Writing Test

These are some of our most important IELTS Writing Pages for the Academic module:

  • Task 1 Lessons
  • Task 2 Lessons
  • Model Essays with Feedback
  • Model Graphs with Feedback
  • Writing Practice Tests
  • Writing Tips
  • IELTS Grammar

If you are taking General Training , you can get tips and strategies and learn more about this particular module here:

  • IELTS General Training

Read on to learn more about what you have to do in the IELTS writing test.

About the Writing Test

The IELTS writing test module varies depending on whether you are doing the Academic Test (for university applications) or the General Test (usually for work / general migration).

  • In IELTS Academic  you have to describe a graph or diagram (Task 1) and write an essay (Task 2).
  • In IELTS General Training you have to write a letter (Task 1) and write an essay (Task 2).

The Task 2 (essay) is actually worth more marks than the Task 1 (graph or letter) so you should spend 40 minutes of the time on the essay and 20 minutes on the graph / letter.

This difference in marking is represented in the number of words you have to write, which is a minimum of 150 for the Task 1 and 250 for the Task 2.

Academic Task 1

In the first section you will need to describe, summarize or explain a graph, diagram or process. Here is an example question:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task .

The chart shows components of GDP in the UK from 1992 to 2000.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

how to practice ielts writing online

You will have to describe the chart in no less than 150 words. In this section of the test, you could also get a line graph, a pie chart, a process, a table, or a map to describe.

Check out this video giving you an overview and tips on the language you'll need to know:

Academic Task 2

Task 2 is an essay question. You will have to write a response to the question giving reasons and examples to support your answer. The topics are general interest.

Here is an example of a question:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

The dangers and complexities of the modern world have made the mobile phone an absolute necessity for children.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Check out this video giving you an overview of the kind of questions you could get for the IELTS Essay:

General Training Task 1

The task of the general training module is to write a letter. You will be presented with a situation and you will need to write your letter explaining the situation or asking for information. The letter may be one of three styles:

  • Semi-Formal

Your response will have to reflect the appropriate style.

Here is an example question:

You want to sell your television. You think a friend of yours might like to buy it from you.  Write a letter to your friend.

In your letter:

  • Explain why you are selling the television
  • Describe the television
  • Suggest a date when your friend can come and see it

Write at least 150 words

You do  NOT  need to write any addresses

Begin your letter as follows:

General Training Task 2

This is the same as the IELTS writing Academic module. You will need to write an essay responding to a point of view, argument or problem.

However, on the test day, the essay will be different to the one given to those taking the Academic module.

The essays is sometimes in a slightly more personal style than for the academic essay, but you need to follow the same methods for writing the essay.

A quick look at the ielts academic writing test.

Duration: 60 minutes

The IELTS Academic Writing test is made up of two tasks. The topics in these tasks are related to areas of general interest and are suitable for test takers entering undergraduate and postgraduate studies or seeking professional registration. Responses to both tasks must be written in a formal style.

Task 1

You will be presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram and asked to describe, summarise or explain the information in your own words. You may be asked to describe and present data, describe the stages of a process, how something works or describe an object, plan or design.

Task 2

You will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. You will support your point of view with relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.

Summarising facts or figures from graphic information

In IELTS Academic Writing Task 1, you will be shown some visual information, a visual way to represent information. You may be shown one or more than one visual. This visual information can be shown as a:

Table

Chart

Process

Graph

You will also be given instructions so summarise the information you see by selecting and reporting the main features you see, making comparisons where relevant.  You will need to do an information transfer task – the visual information you are given needs to be presented in the form of text.

To complete the task successfully, you will need to:

Write an introduction

Write an overview (a summary of what you see)

Present and highlight the key features with figures (data)

You will need to write a minimum of 150 words and answers must be written in full, no bullet points or notes.

Writing an essay

In Task 2 of the Academic Writing test, you are asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, an argument, or a problem. Essays should be written in an academic, or semi-formal style. Topics are about relevant issues and focus on a particular aspect of the topic. For example, if the topic is about computers, the focus will be on a particular aspect rather than writing about computers in general.

The task instructions give you information about the question telling you how to discuss the topic in your essay. You may be asked to provide factual information, outline and present solutions, justify an opinion or evaluate evidence and ideas. It is important that you complete the task carefully using relevant ideas and examples to support your position. Your ideas should be organised clearly, using paragraphs for each idea. You must write a minimum of 250 words.

You are assessed on your ability to follow English essay-writing conventions to organise and link information in a coherent way using language accurately and appropriately to express your ideas and opinions.

IELTS Writing Practice Tests 2024: How to Improve Your Score?

IELTS Writing Prediction Questions for 2024

The IELTS Writing test is a challenging but important part of the exam. It assesses your ability to write in English at a specific level, and your score will have a significant impact on your overall result. There comes the part where the “IELTS Writing Practice Test” becomes an important resource for your structured preparation.

If you want to improve your IELTS Writing score, it’s important to practice regularly. One of the best ways to do this is to take IELTS Writing practice tests.

There are many different IELTS Writing practice tests available online and in books. When choosing a practice test, it’s important to make sure that it is authentic. This means that the questions and tasks should be similar to those that you will encounter on the actual exam.

IELTS Writing Task 1 is broadly divided into two types:

  • Writing Task 1 Academic
  • Writing Task 1 General

Both tasks cover different areas of writing components where an individual is evaluated for their skill in that particular area.

IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic

In Task 1 Academic, you will be given a visual stimulus, such as a graph, table, chart, or diagram. You will be asked to describe the information in the stimulus in detail. Your response should be objective and factual.

Here are the steps on how to write  IELTS Writing Task 1 :

  • Read the question carefully.  Make sure that you understand what you are being asked to do.
  • Examine the visual stimulus.  Take your time to understand the information that is presented.
  • Identify the main features of the stimulus.  What are the key points that you need to describe?
  • Write an introduction.  In your introduction, state the topic of your essay and briefly describe the main features of the stimulus.
  • Write body paragraphs.  In your body paragraphs, develop each of the main features in detail. Use specific examples and statistics to support your points.

IELTS Writing Task 1 General

In this task 1 General, you will be asked to write a letter for various purposes, such as making requests, providing information, or expressing opinions. To excel in this task, it’s essential to follow a structured approach.

Below, we’ll outline five crucial steps to help you craft a well-organized, coherent, and appropriately styled letter to meet the demands of the IELTS examiners.

1. Understand the Task

  • Read the prompt carefully to understand the purpose and context of the letter. Determine who you are writing to, why you are writing, and what information or request is involved.
  • Identify the tone and style required for the letter. Is it formal, semi-formal, or informal? This will dictate your language and formatting choices.

2. Plan Your Letter

  • Take a few minutes to brainstorm and plan your response. Jot down key points, such as the main message, any supporting details or examples, and the structure of your letter.
  • Decide on the appropriate greeting (e.g., “Dear Sir/Madam,” “Dear Mr. Smith,” “Hi Sarah,” etc.) based on the formality of the task.

3. Structure Your Letter

  • Follow a standard letter format, including a salutation, introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing.
  • In the introduction, briefly state the purpose of your letter and establish a friendly or formal tone.
  • In the body paragraphs, provide relevant details, explanations, or examples to support your message. Use clear and concise language.
  • Organize your ideas logically, using paragraphs to separate different points or topics.
  • Maintain a balanced tone throughout the letter, avoiding overly emotional or informal language.

4. Use Appropriate Language and Vocabulary

  • Choose your words carefully to convey your message accurately and politely. Avoid overly complex vocabulary or jargon.
  • Pay attention to grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Errors can negatively impact your score, so proofread your letter before submitting it.
  • Use transitional phrases to connect ideas and make your letter flow smoothly.

IELTS Task 2

In Task 2, you will be given an essay question. You will be asked to write an essay that expresses your opinion on the topic. Your response should be well-organized and supported by evidence.

Here are the steps on how to write  IELTS Writing Task 2 :

  • Brainstorm ideas.  What are your thoughts on the topic? What evidence can you use to support your opinion?
  • Plan your essay.  Decide how you are going to organize your ideas.
  • Write an introduction.  In your introduction, state the topic of your essay and give your opinion on the topic.
  • Write body paragraphs.  In your body paragraphs, develop your opinion in detail. Use evidence to support your points.
  • Write a conclusion.  In your conclusion, summarize your main points and restate your opinion on the topic.

A Complete Checklist for IELTS Writing Tasks

Statistics show that the world’s population is increasing rapidly. It is expected that most of us will be living in cities within the next few decades. The question of whether urbanisation is a positive or negative development remains controversial.

A rapid influx of people moving from rural to urban areas is bound to cause problems. Firstly, pressure on resources such as housing and transportation intensifies. It is becoming difficult for many people to afford adequate housing in cities. A by-product of this is the creation of slums causing low-income families to group together in neglected parts of the city. These people often become trapped in a cycle of poverty that is difficult to escape. As mentioned above, the growth of urban areas can also lead to severe traffic congestion because more and more vehicles travel into the city from the suburbs. This has many knock-on effects, such as problems with air quality. It also leads many city dwellers to experience mental health issues because travelling across large cities is tiring and stressful. All of this being said, I don’t believe that urbanisation is a wholly negative development. There are advantages to living in large cities that are well managed. For example, there are more schools which means more education opportunities. Access to higher-quality health care is often better in cities. Some cities have also introduced ride-sharing, e-bikes and part and ride services that reduce environmental problems.

My opinion is that many of the problems associated with urbanisation are avoidable but dealing with increasing populations in cities is a formidable challenge. How governments, businesses and society respond to this challenge will dramatically affect the future of our world.

The given map illustrate the center of a small city which have been change because there are lot of development . Birshire will have undergone a drastic transformation from a rural town into an urbanized area in the future with new infrastructures like roads, a car park, and a supermarket. First and foremost, all the farms from Birshire will have been removed in the days to come. Griffiths Farm, which is in the top right corner of the map, will have been replaced by a supermarket, whereas Hoolahan Farm, which is currently on the right side of McGoldrick Road, will make way for a parking lot. Moreover, the Farmer’s Market, which is beside Corbie Road, will no longer be there in the future.

Furthermore, apart from the addition of a roundabout at the junction of McGoldrick Road and That Street, Corbie Road will be extended beyond That Street. The open field at the bottom right of the map will be the venue for the construction of a Sports Center. Together with the removal of the shops from the the bottom left, more houses will have been erected.

Overall Band: 4.5

Cohesive devices used are very mechanical, there should be a varied range of grammatical expressions and vocabulary. Answer lacks referencing too.

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these view and give your opinion.

There is a belief of some persons that professionals such as doctors and engineers shall work in the same country where they got their trainings. While, the other half of the people are comfortable with the thought that such professions shall be set free to choose their work place/nation. Those who are against this idea might think that every country have their own way of completing task and doctors and engineers might mess up if their training varies with the real work setting of another country. Whereas, those who support the concept of letting the professionals choose their country may think that doctors are meant to save lives and engineers to do construction work anywhere in the globe.

People who accede in doctors and engineers to do their jobs in the nation where they achieved their licenses have a feeling that the process of completing a task in each nation differs. Thus, such vibe make them think that the difference in working creates a huge complexities in performing even though the end results are same; also, the people have a habit of resisting the change in everything. The client of such skilled personnel may not trust them if they find the procedure of assignment even slightly different. I have witnessed similar incident by myself. There was this Chinese doctor in on of the hospitals of Kathmandu. No any patient was willing to get treated by him because they did not trust the way of treatment of the outsiders.

Despite some people who are against the experts working in another country, there are some of the people who has a feeling that any professional person can do their jobs efficiently anywhere they go. These people believes that all doctors saves the lives of their patients and all the engineers help in construction work besides where they get their licenses from. There might be the change in the way of getting work done yet, their goals are same at the end. For instance, a lot of Nepalese nurses and doctors are being granted working visa for the UK, the USA, and Australia. This shows that although they got training from Nepal, their work is valued in foreign land as well.

My point of view regarding these clause is that the experts should be given the freedom to choose their working environment. It is their decision either to go to foreign strand for employment or to work in the land where they achieve their coaching. No matter how different the learning steps are, if the end result is same. No professionals should be given the criterion of working in the country they took their training from. Doctors are to treat their patients and they will treat them and engineers are to construct houses, buildings, or road and they will continue to build them no matter where they are.

As a result, both the views have their own conception and perception. Some people find it better for doctors and engineers to work where they got their knowledge from, whereas, others think as the professionals should be allowed to choose their desired nation to perform their jobs. Either way the person to provide the facilities should be given right to select their area of working in my opinion.

The line graph illustrates information about non employment rate and number of people migrate from Ireland during 1998 and 2008. The data has been calibrated in percentage and numbers. When all the figures are taken into considerations, it can be vividly seen that the unemployment rate declined significantly. Meanwhile, there were changes in the percentage of people leaving Ireland during this time. As far as 1998 is concerned, the unemployed was approximately 18 percent along with the citizen fly over was about 30, 000. In contrast, in next two years the leave the country was increased whereas joblessness rates was decreased. Moving towards the rest of the information, in 2000 the both level was gone down. On the other hand, after 8 years the work less society and population move was nearly about 10 percent and 40, 000. To sum up, it can be said that in end of time both inactivity and take off persons was decline. please check it for me

Band 5 Key features which are selected are not adequately covered. The recounting of detail is mainly mechanically. Organization is evident but is not wholly logical and there may be a lack of overall progression. Nevertheless, there is a sense of underlying coherence to the response. Simple vocabulary is used accurately, but the range does not permit much variation in expression. Although complex sentences are attempted, they tend to be faulty, and the greatest accuracy is achieved on simple sentences.

IELTS Writing Practice: Improving Your Writing Score

how to practice ielts writing online

IELTS Writing is essential for anyone who wants to improve their score, but you must know where to find real IELTS questions, and you must practice in a way that will help you improve your score.

There are many effective ways to practice IELTS Writing, but many are a waste of time.

This article will show you where you can find real IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2 questions and also share the most effective way to improve your scores through practice.

But first, let me ask a few questions:

If you had a problem with your health, who would you go and see? A doctor.

Who would you go and see if you had a problem with your car? A mechanic

If you needed a haircut, would you cut it yourself? Probably not.

People tend to use experts because they know exactly what they are doing and will save you a lot of time and money. They have trained for years to become experts in their chosen field.

Why, then, do you think IELTS Writing is any different? Why do you think that all you have to do is, do lots of practice tests, and you will suddenly get better? If the plumbing in your house wasn’t working, would you pick up some tools and hope for the best? No, so if you are serious about improving your scores, don’t do the same thing with your IELTS Writing practice.

IELTS Writing Practice: Expert Training

First of all, I am not writing this to sell you my writing correction service . I really don’t care if you buy my services or not. 99.99% of the people who come to this site will never give me a penny, and I am fine with that. However, I would not be telling the truth if I said that practising without the services of an expert is as effective as practising without them.

An expert can tell you exactly what is wrong with your writing and what you need to focus on. Whoever you choose is up to you, but I would encourage you to work with an expert.

This will save you a huge amount of time and ensure that you only work on the things you need to work on. If you had a toothache, you wouldn’t rip out every tooth; you would ask your dentist to identify the specific problem and treat it as gently as possible.

Yes, experts do cost money, but they are much cheaper than having to do your test again.

IELTS Writing Practice: A Step-by-Step Guide

Find some real IELTS Writing questions. Do NOT use fake questions. This is essential. If you use fake questions, you will likely get a false impression of what the actual test will be like. Imagine practising for your driving test in a tractor instead of a car!

How can you spot a fake question? Basically, if it doesn’t come from one of the official sources below, it is fake:

  • Cambridge English (books and online)
  • IELTS Official
  • The British Council

Hundreds of sites claim to have real questions, but 90% are unreliable. There are more questions than you’ll ever need at the places on the list above.

Do a diagnostic test under exam conditions.

This will establish your current level and allow your expert to tell you exactly what your issues are and how to improve.

Find an expert. Be very careful here. Just because someone says they are an ‘expert’ or an ‘ex-examiner’ doesn’t mean that they actually are.

Your expert should:

  • Be well established. If they are online, they should have lots of social proof, such as a large Facebook following and lots of engagement on their page.
  • Be an expert. They should have worked for a reputable school and know everything there is to know about the test. They should have lots of free material available online that you can look at. If they have neither of these things, that’s a warning sign.
  • Come highly recommended. A recommendation from someone you know is always best, but if not, they should have lots of positive reviews from past pupils.
  • Provide you with enough information. I provide at least 4 pages of feedback to my students. If they charge you for just a few words, it’s a waste of your time and money.
  • Be responsive to questions. If you have any questions about their service and/or your feedback, they should get back to you professionally and promptly.
  • Give free resources to help you improve your writing.

All of the above would indicate that they are trustworthy and will help you out. Unfortunately, there are a few dodgy ‘experts’ out there, so be careful.

Review your feedback.

The expert should have corrected all of your language errors and given you detailed feedback on all areas of your response.

They should have told you exactly why you are getting the score they gave you. They should also be able to tell you exactly what you need to work on.

Take this information and work on turning those weaknesses into strengths.

After you work on your weak areas, do another writing test under exam conditions. Your expert will be able to tell you how much you are progressing. The aim here is to narrow your focus on just the problem areas.

After repeating this IELTS Writing practice technique a few times, you can turn all of your weaknesses into strengths. The key is to put in the work that will help you become a better writer.

Check out our writing correction service if you are interested in taking your writing to the next level.

What is an ielts writing checker.

Sunny was, like a lot of IELTS students, worrying about improving her score – and she learned that the smartest students use the right tools.

An IELTS writing checker is a tool or service that assesses and evaluates the quality of an IELTS writing task.

The checker evaluates the writing skills of the test taker, including the clarity, coherence, organization, and accuracy of the written text.

An IELTS writing checker may provide feedback on various aspects of the essay, including grammar, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. Additionally, they may give suggestions on how to improve the essay and achieve a higher score.

Why should you use an IELTS writing checker?

Sunny had previously tried to use a well-known online grammar checker which had helped her writing sound better – but she needed an IELTS-specific tool.

An IELTS writing checker can be a helpful tool for anyone who is preparing to take the IELTS exam. Here are a few reasons why you might want to use an IELTS writing checker:

  • To get feedback on your writing: This is especially helpful if you are studying for the exam on your own and don’t have a teacher or tutor to give you feedback.
  • To improve your score: By identifying the specific areas that you need to work on in order to improve your score on the writing section of the exam.
  • To practice writing under timed conditions: The IELTS writing checker can simulate the conditions of the actual exam by giving you a prompt and a time limit to complete your essay. You should complete section 1 in 20 minutes, and write at least 150 words. Section 2 should take 40 minutes, with at least 250 words. This can help you get used to writing under pressure and develop your time management skills.
  • To learn from your mistakes: The IELTS writing checker can highlight the mistakes you make in your writing, such as grammar errors, spelling mistakes, or problems with sentence structure. By learning from your mistakes, you can avoid making the same errors in the future.

How to use the IELTS writing checker effectively?

  • Familiarize yourself with the marking criteria: Before you start using the IELTS writing checker, it’s important to understand the criteria that the examiners use to mark your writing. This will help you understand what you need to focus on to improve your score.
  • Practice writing regularly: To get the most out of the IELTS writing checker, it’s important to practice writing regularly. This will help you improve your writing skills and give you more opportunities to use the checker.
  • Analyze your mistakes: When the writing checker highlights your mistakes, take the time to analyze them and understand why you made them. This will help you avoid making the same mistakes in the future.
  • Use the feedback to improve your writing: The IELTS writing checker provides feedback on your writing, so use it to your advantage. Take note of the areas where you need to improve and make the necessary changes to your writing.
  • Work on your time management: During the IELTS exam, time management is crucial. To prepare for this, try to complete your writing tasks within the allotted time and use the writing checker to check your work quickly.
  • Don’t rely on the IELTS writing checker entirely: While the writing checker is a useful tool, it’s important to remember that it’s not perfect. Use it as a guide, but don’t rely on it entirely. Always use your own judgement and common sense when it comes to your writing.

What are some common mistakes made in IELTS writing?

There are several common mistakes that candidates make in IELTS writing. Here are a few:

  • Not addressing the task properly: One of the most common mistakes that candidates make is not addressing the task properly. They may write a well-organized and grammatically correct essay, but if it does not answer the question asked in the prompt, they will not get a good score. For example, ‘What are the advantages and disadvantages of owning a car?’ If you only write about the advantages of having a car, you can not score high on task achievement.
  • Poor grammar and spelling: Another common mistake is poor grammar and spelling errors. Candidates should aim to write in grammatically correct sentences and avoid spelling mistakes. These errors can significantly impact the overall score.
  • Lack of coherence and cohesion: Candidates should ensure that their writing is coherent and cohesive. The essay should have a logical flow, and ideas should be linked together using appropriate transition words and phrases.
  • Inappropriate word choice: Using inappropriate words or vocabulary can also result in a lower score. Candidates should aim to use a range of vocabulary, but it should be used appropriately in context.
  • Not meeting the word count: Candidates must meet the word count requirements for each task. Writing too few or too many words can result in a lower score.
  • Not organizing the essay properly: Candidates should aim to organize their essay into clear paragraphs with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion.
  • Plagiarism: Plagiarism is a serious offence and can lead to disqualification from courses and exams. If you plagiarise practice IELTS essays, it’s hard to know what you are capable of writing by yourself anyway.

How can the IELTS writing checker help you improve your score?

The IELTS writing check can be a valuable tool in helping you improve your writing skills and ultimately, your IELTS score. Here are a few ways in which the IELTS writing check can assist you:

  • Feedback on your strengths and weaknesses: The IELTS writing check provides you with personalized feedback on your writing, including an assessment of your strengths and weaknesses. This feedback can help you identify the areas you need to work on to improve your score.

For example, Sunny hadn’t realised that she had a habit of writing ‘however’ in the middle of paragraphs and mis-

spelling ‘because’, ‘in conclusion’ and ‘instead’. Now, she is much more aware of these mistakes.

  • Identification of common mistakes: The IELTS writing check can also help you identify common mistakes that you may be making in your writing, such as grammar, vocabulary, or sentence structure errors.
  • Practice opportunities: The IELTS writing check provides you with practice opportunities to work on your writing skills. By submitting practice essays for review, you can receive feedback on your writing and work on improving your weaknesses.
  • Familiarization with the IELTS exam format: The IELTS writing check can help you become more familiar with the IELTS exam format and requirements. This can help you feel more confident and prepared for the actual exam.
  • Customized study plan: Based on the feedback provided by the IELTS writing check, you can develop a customized study plan to focus on the areas that need improvement. This can help you maximize your study time and improve your score more efficiently.

IELTS Writing Sample Task 2 Essay

Here is a sample band 9 essay for the common IELTS writing task 2 topic - "Has technology improved or hampered communication in society? Discuss".

Communication has been transformed exponentially due to continuous technological innovations. While some argue that this has deteriorated meaningful interaction, modern technology has primarily boosted social communication.

Technological advancements have allowed excessive use, causing individuals to lose touch with face-to-face communication. Today, generations are so connected to social networking sites such as Facebook and Instagram that they are on their phones and screens all day and do not even talk to their family and friends. It has become more comfortable to chat online, even at social events, and it is more comfortable to chat online rather than have physical conversations. The reliance on emojis and short forms of words has also reduced the mechanism of speaking and writing.

However, communication has taken different forms owing to modern technological means that have created a means of communicating across borders. Employing applications such as Skype or Zoom, it is possible to hold video calls effectively with workmates and relatives located overseas at a reasonable cost. Writing-based communication through e-mail and messaging applications such as WhatsApp gives you an instant worldwide Connection. Social networks have connected people from cultures and countries, making their voices reach the globe. Overall, technology has made communication faster, cheaper and more convenient.

In conclusion, while technology has disrupted traditional communication modes, it has also simplified the process exponentially. With sensible use, modern means can enhance rather than hinder effective communication across societies worldwide. The advantages technology has brought indeed outweigh the disadvantages.

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 Topics

By anna hasper, 08 february 2024 - 12:52.

Test takers during the IELTS Writing section at a test centre

Lots of people who take IELTS Academic think that, of the two writing tasks in the test, Task 1 is the most challenging. Perhaps this is because it involves a visual image and often numbers, too.

While it’s impossible to predict which topic you’ll be assigned, you can prepare for this task with some concrete steps that will help you develop a good strategy and get the score you need. So, let’s look at what you can expect in IELTS Writing Task 1, and provide you with a structure for completing this task successfully.

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 topics and answers

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 is an information transfer task. The test paper shows you an image (a graph, table, chart or diagram) with certain information, and you will need to present this information in at least 150 words.

So, how can you get a good score in this task? Let’s take a step-by-step approach to Writing Task 1 preparation:

1. Learn the requirements of Writing Task 1

Before taking the test, it is important to fully understand what the task expects you to do:

“Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.”

Let’s break it down:

  • Summarise. So, avoid writing about every detail. You are writing a summary report.
  • Select the main features of the image. Choose three to five aspects of the image and write about these with some detail.
  • Report, i.e. write about what is visible in the image. Do not give your opinion - stick to the facts!
  • Make comparisons where relevant: look for similarities and differences in the image if appropriate.

2. Read about common topics

In this task, you might see images that present information about current topics such as education, the environment, technology use, health, tourism, infrastructure, economic developments - there are lots of potential topics.

So, it’s a good idea to keep up to date with current affairs and read quality newspapers in English to help expand your vocabulary around these topics. That way, you’ll be prepared for IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic topics.

3. Research the language you’ll need in your answer

Common images you might see in the IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 are:

  • Line graphs
  • Bar charts/ graphs
  • Or a combination of the above

It's important to research the language you’ll need to talk about these types of images. Check if the images show information about the past, present or future.

For pie charts, line graphs, bar charts or graphs, and tables, you’ll probably use language of comparisons and superlatives. For example: The amount of renewable energy accounted for quite similar proportions for both countries. However, in New Zealand most renewables consisted of wind energy.

For processes, it might be appropriate to use the passive, and the language of sequencing. For example: Once the coffee beans have been dried, they are roasted in industrial roasters. Finally, after they’ve been roasted, they are ground into a fine powder.

For maps and plans, you’ll need to use language of location and directionality, for example:  A new school building, which will be double the size of the current one, will be built to the north of the student parking area.

Learning the language you need will help to prepare you to write detailed answers about the IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic topics.

How to answer IELTS Academic Writing Task 1

Your examiner will be looking for three key elements in your report:

  • An introduction
  • An overview
  • One or two body paragraphs with details about the image

Let’s look more closely at what you should include in each section of your answer to IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic topics.

1. The Introduction

The introduction answers one or more of the following three questions:

Keeping these questions in mind, write a brief introduction on the subject of the images. Now, there might not always be a where or a when, but there always is a what!

2. The overview

Here it is useful to group the common images mentioned above into two main categories:

  • Images that are data-related , such as pie charts, line graphs, bar charts/ graphs and tables. In other words: images with numbers.
  • Images that show processes of change : such as processes, maps and plans.

You’ll need to adopt a different approach, depending which category your image belongs to. Let’s take a look:

Data-related:   The overview presents the big picture; what are the most significant trends or developments? You do not need to present data, such as exact numbers or percentages here. It’s fine to keep it general.

Processes of change:

  • Processes: highlight how many steps you can see in the image and try to categorise related steps into three or four main stages. Doing this shows that you can see the relationships between the different steps.
  • Maps and plans: highlight the main changes or developments. Around three to five aspects should be enough.

If you are presented with more than one visual, for example two line graphs, your overview needs to highlight the main trends or changes for both, and make general comparisons.

You can write the overview at the end, as a separate paragraph or connect it to the introduction. Ideally, write the overview directly after the introduction to make sure it is included.

3. Paragraph(s) with details about the image

Write one or two paragraphs in which you present the noticeable features in more detail. Here you need to use the data, e.g. the numbers,  to support your description and use comparisons where relevant.

For data-related tasks write details such as the highest, the lowest, the biggest difference, similarities and significant exceptions.

For processes of change provide details about the three to five stages (process) or main changes or developments (maps and plans) you mentioned in your overview.

How is Writing Task 1 marked?

Writing task 1 in IELTS Academic is worth around 33% of your total writing score. To give you an appropriate score, the examiner will look at the following four areas according to the descriptors:

1. Task achievement

The examiner looks at your ability to answer the question properly. You need to write in prose, include an introduction and a general overview, as well as talk about the main features using the data from the task.

2. Coherence

The examiner assesses your ability to logically group and organise the information. You need to use a range of cohesive devices to make the connection between your sentences and paragraphs clear.

3. Lexical resource

The examiner assesses your ability to use a variety of vocabulary items with precision. You need to show you can use collocations and synonyms appropriately. Correct spelling is also important.

4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy

The examiner looks at your ability to use a variety of sentence structures and different grammar items accurately and appropriately. You need to use appropriate punctuation.
