About the SAT

The Scholastic Assessment Test, or SAT, is a standardized test widely used for college admissions in the United States. Designed to assess a student’s readiness for higher education, the SAT serves as a crucial component in the admissions process for many colleges and universities.

The SAT is a timed test, and candidates must navigate through its sections within a stipulated timeframe. The entire test duration is 2 hours and 14 minutes, comprising two main sections: Reading and Writing, and Math. This strategic division ensures a comprehensive evaluation of a student’s academic abilities.

What subjects are covered by the SAT?

• Reading and Writing The first part of the SAT is the Reading and Writing section. It is designed to evaluate a student’s language skills and comprehension abilities. This section includes short reading passages or pairs of passages, followed by multiple-choice questions. These questions are categorized into four content domains:
• Craft and Structure: Measures comprehension, vocabulary, analysis, synthesis, and reasoning skills needed to understand and use high-utility words and phrases in context.
• Information and Ideas: Evaluates comprehension, analysis, and reasoning skills along with the ability to locate, interpret, evaluate, and integrate information and ideas from texts and informational graphics.
• Expression of Ideas: Tests the ability to revise texts for improved written expression and meet specific rhetorical goals.
• Standard English Conventions: Measures the ability to edit text to conform to core conventions of Standard English sentence structure, usage, and punctuation.This section is divided into two modules, and questions are arranged from easiest to hardest, allowing students to progressively showcase their skills.
• Math Section

The Math section of the SAT focuses on assessing a student’s proficiency in key areas crucial for college and career success. Divided into two modules, this section covers four categories of math concepts:

• Algebra: Involves fundamental algebraic concepts and problem-solving.
• Advanced Math: Incorporates more complex mathematical concepts, challenging students to showcase their understanding.
• Problem-Solving and Data Analysis: Requires students to apply math skills in real-world scenarios, demonstrating their ability to analyze and interpret data.
• Geometry and Trigonometry: Tests knowledge and application of geometric and trigonometric principles.

Approximately 30% of Math questions are set in context, presenting students with word problems that require an understanding of mathematical concepts within the framework of science, social studies, or real-world scenarios.

Overview of the SAT

The SAT is an entrance exam used by colleges and universities to help make decisions about admissions.

The SAT is administered by the CollegeBoard and is given 7 times per year. The exam is a timed, mainly multiple-choice exam, taken by students in high school.

Beginning in the spring of 2024, the SAT will be going fully digital. The digital SAT (DSAT) will have some formatting and content changes to it, along with some other changes. You can review those changes below.

New SAT (Digital SAT)

This exam will be given to students starting in spring of 2024.

Old SAT (Written Exam)

This exam will be given to students up until spring of 2024.

The biggest difference between the old SAT and the digital SAT is that the digital SAT is taken completely online and has combined some sections to streamline the exam.

Scoring of the SAT

You will receive a score for math and a score for reading/writing. Each of those scores will be between 200 and 800 .

Your total score will be the sum of those two scores. You can receive a total score between 400 and 1600 on the SAT.

The average SAT score is 1060. Learn more about good SAT scores .

Registering for the SAT and Test Dates

You can register for the SAT online via the CollegeBoard site .

You will need to do the following when registering for the SAT:

• Have a Valid Photo ID
• Upload a Photo of Yourself When Registering Online
• Pay Registration Fees
• Print Your Admission Ticket

It will cost your $60 to take the SAT. There may be some additional fees like canceling, changing test center, etc..

The SAT is typically given 7 times per year. The exam is given on Saturdays. You can expect the exam to be given in these months:

• Early March
• Late August
• Early October
• Early November
• Early December

Steps for Using SAT Practice

When using our free SAT practice tests, we recommend the following steps to get the most out of your time:

• Take 1 practice exam from each subject.
• Determine which subject you struggled the most with.
• Focus on that 1 subject moving forward. Take additional practice exams in that subject, study important concepts, and invest in a SAT prep course if need be.
• Take a practice exam on that subject again and see where you stand. Continue to focus on that subject if you need more help or move on to another subject if you did well on this practice exam.
• Repeat steps 3 and 4 for other subjects.

Benefits of Using SAT Practice Questions

There are many benefits to using SAT questions during your prep process. Some of those benefits include:

Help With Timing

The SAT exam is a timed test. Keeping a steady pace is critical to achieving a high score.

You can improve your decision making and your time by taking practice exams.

Test Familiarity

All standardized tests, including the SAT, have their own unique way of presenting questions and answer choices.

You will gain more familiarity and comfort with the SAT question style as you take more practice quizzes. On the real exam day, there will be no surprises.

Efficient Studying

When you take many practice exams, you will get a sense of your test strengths and weaknesses.

Many students mistakenly spend time working on their strengths while ignoring their weaknesses.

Knowing which subjects you struggle with will help you focus your study time.

Work On Problem Solving

Tests like the SAT measure your ability to solve problems, not just memorize information. It is critical to have strong problem-solving abilities.

The answer explanations provided in our score reports can help you understand how to solve problems that you may be struggling with.

College Board Switches to Fully Digital SAT

In spring 2023, the College Board began making its transition to a fully digital version of the SAT—they began this launch with students taking the test internationally. Students taking the test in the U.S. will see this same transition in spring 2024, when the SAT officially completes its launch of the Digital SAT Suite of Assessments .

Therefore, the official digital SAT practice tests are the most relevant—you want to practice in the same format you’ll take the official test to best prepare for realistic testing conditions. This will give you the most authentic test experience and prepare you for what you’ll see and do on test day.

Free Digital SAT Practice Tests (Current 1600 Format, 2023-Present)

There are currently 4 full-length digital adaptive tests available that use the same interface, format, and scoring that you’ll see on the real digital SAT. To access these digital tests you’ll first need to download Bluebook , the app where you will register and take the digital SAT. There, you will find not just practice tests, but additional resources that will help you prepare for this new format.

Now that the SAT is fully digital, only students with approved accommodations will be able to take the test in paper form. Currently, there are 8 available practice tests for the redesigned SAT , all of which have been provided by the maker of the SAT itself, the College Board .

Note that some official practice SATs still include an essay. The essay was previously an optional part of the SAT.  Skip over any practice SAT Essays you come across and focus your studying on the remaining sections of the exam (Math, Reading, and Writing and Language). You probably noticed that Practice Test 2 and Practice Test 4 are missing from the section above. That's because the College Board has removed them from their list of officially available practice tests.

If you've already worked through the first eight official practice tests and want to keep working on test-taking skills like time management and strategy, then these exams are a great option!

Free Printable SAT Tests (Old 2400 Format, 2005-2016)

These next tests follow the old 2400 format of the SAT, with separate Critical Reading, Math, and Writing sections. (By contrast, on the current SAT, your Reading and Writing scores are combined for a total Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score.)

Despite their somewhat out-of-date structure, these tests can be useful for your studying. Just keep in mind all the major differences between the old and current SAT . I recommend using these tests more as training sessions than as full-on practice for the SAT.

It might look as though I've skipped a few years here, but I actually haven't: all the tests for the years not listed are repeats of those above, including the 2011-12, 2010-11, 2009-10, 2008-09, 2006-07, and 2005-06 practice tests. So if you find these tests on other forums or websites, don't waste your time taking them since they're the exact same as the ones already listed.

Free Printable SAT Tests (Very Old 1600 Format, Pre-2005)

Before the SAT underwent a redesign in 2016, the last time it had changed was in 2005, back when it jumped from a 1600-point scale to a 2400-point scale.

Despite this massive shift in scoring, only a few major differences could be found between the very old 1600 SAT and the old 2400 SAT. Other than those, most of the test remained the same.

As a result, these very old SAT practice tests are a hidden gold mine that few students know of. By taking these tests, then, you'll have that much more of an edge over other test takers.

Before I give you the links, though, note a few important caveats:

• You can skip the analogies questions on Reading. These are the questions that look like "CAR : ENGINE ::." Since they're no longer on the SAT, there's no point in studying them.
• You can skip the comparison questions on Math. This question type presents two boxes and asks you to decide whether A or B is greater. Again, these aren't on the current SAT, so you don't need to worry about these.
• There is no Writing section on these tests. Therefore, make sure you use supplementary prep materials to study the grammar and question types you'll need to know for the current SAT's Writing and Language section.

Be grateful you don't need to answer some of these old-format questions—analogies were the primary reason that the SAT had a bad reputation for forcing students to memorize vocab!

6 Tips for Getting the Most Out of SAT Practice Tests

Each SAT practice test requires over three hours of intense focus, so it's important to utilize them effectively. Below are six critical strategies to follow each time you take a practice test.

#1: Take Practice Tests in the Same Format That You’ll Take the Real SAT

With the SAT switching to digital delivery between 2023-2024, you’ll need to check your test date to know whether you’ll be taking the SAT digitally or on paper. Once you know that, you can choose the best option for your prep— you want to choose the same format and delivery for your practice tests as for the real thing. 

So, if you’ll be taking the SAT in the U.S. before spring 2024, start with the 8 official, printable tests at the beginning of this article. If you’ll be taking the SAT digitally, either internationally or in the U.S. after spring 2024, you should download the College Board’s Bluebook app and use the 4 official, digital practice tests. And if you’ll have accommodations for taking the SAT after spring 2024 and will be using a paper copy for the real test, start by taking the 4 official, printable practice tests with the new digital SAT format. 

#2: Use Strict Timing on Each Section

Although time pressure can be intimidating, it's important to follow official SAT time limits as closely as possible on practice tests.

Why? If, for example, you spend just two extra minutes on a section, this could raise your score by hundreds of points, since the extra time allowed you to answer more questions than you would've been able to within the actual time limit. As a result, your practice SAT score becomes inflated and doesn't give you an accurate indicator of your actual scoring ability.

On the digital SAT, there are two sections with two modules each:

Reading and Writing

• Time per module:
• Questions per module:
• Time per question:

Make sure to give yourself breaks , too!

#3: Take the Test in One Sitting

The digital SAT is shorter than older versions of the exam but it still lasts over two hours on an early Saturday morning. Many of my students have told me how difficult it was to stay focused the entire time and keep themselves from making careless mistakes at the end.

Preparing for the SAT is like training for a marathon: you need to ensure you have enough stamina to make it through the test. And the best way to do this is to take each practice test in one sitting, as if you were taking the actual SAT.

If it's too difficult for you to find the time to take a practice test in one sitting, go ahead and split it up over several days—just make sure you adhere to the time limits for each section. Ultimately, it's better to do some SAT practice than none at all!

#4: Review Your Mistakes (and Your Correct Answers, Too)

Practice tests aren't just good for getting to know the SAT format and sections—they're also great for learning from your mistakes .

For every practice SAT test you take, spend time reviewing both questions you got wrong and questions you got right. If you don't know why you missed a question, don't just skip it and move on; doing this means you won't learn what kind of mistake you made, which increases your risk of making it over and over again. This habit can affect your score pretty drastically.

So make sure to approach your SAT prep with this in mind: quality over quantity. I'd rather have you take three practice tests with detailed review than six practice tests with no review.

#5: Take At Least 4 Practice Tests Before the Actual SAT

From my experience with thousands of students, this magic number works best at getting students really comfortable with the SAT in all major respects, including timing and endurance.

If you want to take more than four tests, go ahead and try it out—just make sure that you balance your prep with some focused studying on your weaknesses so that you can make faster progress.

#6: Use Supplemental Resources If Necessary

Some students are great at learning the ins and outs of the SAT through practice tests alone—they recognize their mistakes, understand why they made them, and avoid making them in the future.

Where to Find Full-Length SAT Practice Tests (Even Official Ones)

There are a few great places to look for full-length SAT practice tests! Here are our top recommendations:

• Khan Academy : Khan Academy has paired up with the College Board (they’re the test creators) to offer free online practice SAT tests. There are four full exams on the Khan Academy site, which can also be found on the College Board site. After you’ve taken an exam or two, you can then sharpen your skills with practice in different areas with resources on Khan Academy’s site and elsewhere.
• Magoosh Prep : you can choose between a live cohorted class with an instructor (which includes all our lessons and practice questions) or access to the self-study option by itself.

Why do I need to take a full-length practice test?

To maximize your score on the SAT , you’ll need three things:

• Practice questions
• Practice tests

And despite what a lot of students believe, those last two aren’t interchangeable! Lessons are super valuable for reviewing content that you might not have seen for a while—or ever. Practice questions are great for making sure you’ve mastered (and continue to remember) the lesson content.

Learn it, practice it…why the third step? Well, first of all, the official SAT won’t have an “algebra” problem set or a “geometry” problem set. It’ll have all kinds of question types mixed together within the three sections. That means that studying different content areas is a very different experience from test day, when you’ll be in front of the exam for at least three hours (more if you’re taking the essay). So you need to get ready with multiple practice tests !

How to Take an SAT Practice Test

Ready to mimic the official experience? Fantastic! All students can benefit from taking an SAT practice test– unless your test is the next morning, in which case, get your rest! For the rest of you, here’s what to do:

• Set aside approximately four hours of uninterrupted time to take the practice test.
• Take the test in a quiet place where you won’t be distracted.
• Mimic test day conditions by turning off your phone and leaving it in another room.
• Try to take the entire practice test in one sitting.
• Eat a healthy, energizing snack before taking the practice test.
• Give yourself a brief, 10-minute break after the Reading test.
• Give yourself a brief, five-minute break after the Math (No Calculator) test.
• Use a countdown timer and remember to reset it for each test.

All you’d need to do is print your test, find a quiet place, set aside a few hours, and press play to simulate a test-day experience in the comfort of your own home!

What to Do After Practice Tests

After the test, it is critical that you check your answers and make note of any questions you missed. In fact, it’s a good idea to spend at least as much time examining your results as you did taking the test. Why? Well, did you get a question right because you knew the answer, or because you were guessing? Did you get a question wrong because you filled in the wrong bubble? (Practice tests help a lot with this latter problem, by the way!)

Make sure to check the explanations for every question you get wrong, so that you don’t repeat the same mistakes on test day. After you’ve examined your results, do some practice in your weak areas.

SAT Writing and Language Online Practice Test 20: SLP, OMG!

Questions 1-11 refer to the following information.

1 While a large number of people believe that social media are fads that will soon die out , a new trend shows that such a belief may be false. It’s true that most younger people write to one another (via Twitter, Facebook, or text) more than 2 speaking to one another (who uses a phone to talk anymore?), but the spoken word is as important as ever. This importance is nowhere clearer than in the rise of speech-language pathologists (SLPs). The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the SLP profession will grow by 19% between 2012 and 2022. Alongside this growth, the nature of the profession is changing as well: while 3 SLPs overwhelmingly work in hospitals , there has been a notable rise in recent years in private-practice SLPs.

The name “speech-language pathologist” is actually a bit of an understatement. 4 Some SLPs do work with communication disorders, stemming from speech impediments to disabilities relating to oral, written, or graphical language. An SLP who specializes in speech may work on articulation or phonation, though some of these specialists will also work with attention and 5 memory. In particular, they work with the components of those practices that deal with language. Some are more concerned with the mechanical side of speech, addressing 6 their respiratory aspects, particularly as related to volume, breathiness, or rasp.

Although communication disorders are SLPs’ most common targets, some specialists will work more with swallowing disorders. If an infant is struggling to feed, for instance, an SLP might work in tandem with a medical doctor to clear the esophageal function to get it back into 7 good working order . An SLP can 8 lead a regimen of swallowing therapies and advise dietary changes that might make swallowing more comfortable.

In most cases, a speech-language pathologist will work interdisciplinarily, often with other SLP specialists or medical doctors. Along with the increased involvement of SLPs, research continues 9 to show that the mechanisms, of the mouth and respiratory system, are central, to an understanding , of the body as a whole. The SAT is now digital for the first time. One test expert says the new format makes the test easier.

In March, the first US high school students took the SAT exam — digitally.

This switch to digital comes as many top-tier colleges, such as Dartmouth, Yale, and Brown, are reversing their decision to be exam-optional — a trend that started during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a recent study suggests that test scores actually do predict academic performance and college success — better than high school grades.

Shaan Patel — the founder and CEO of Prep Expert, with more than two decades of experience with the popular college entrance exam — told Business Insider the test will be significantly different than in the past. It may even be easier.

The digital SAT has some content changes

For starters, the digital test will be shorter and adaptive. That means the test will get harder as the student progresses through it, but the level of difficulty will depend on how they performed on earlier questions.

According to Patel, the digital SAT is also more "student-friendly" than previous years.

For example, in the past, there was a section where students couldn't use the calculator, but on the digital SAT, Patel said a calculator could be used on all the questions.

"There's even a digital calculator built into the testing application, in case you don't have a graphing calculator," Patel said.

In addition, the reading passages are a lot shorter in the new exam. The essay section has also been dissolved, and the grammar questions have now been integrated with the reading section.

"So it really tests your reading and writing together, which I think will be a welcome change for most people," Patel said.

Plus, there are new question types where students read notes and decipher what is most relevant.

"I think that's a super useful skill in the real world where you get a long email, and you have to sift through the important data," Patel said.

He added students no longer have to memorize difficult, obscure vocabulary words that were once required.

The digital SAT is easier

"The new question types are actually testing students in a much more real-world manner than the previous versions of the SAT," Patel said. "Overall, this test will be more relevant to real-world skills . So, I'm optimistic the changes will be good."

He said, in that regard, the SAT will be easier.

"But, I want to be careful about saying it's easy," Patel said. "I don't think it's easy because what's going to happen is with the adaptive testing structure…you are going to see harder questions as you go along, even though you're going to see fewer questions."

Prep for the SAT shouldn't change all that much

Patel recommended that all students download the College Board's Bluebook app , where they can take practice tests and familiarize themselves with the new adaptive feature.

"They must get used to not letting their brain become overused at the end of the test since that is when most students will encounter the hardest questions," Patel said.

But the most important piece of advice remained the same: prep early.

"I usually recommend getting started in 10th grade so that by the time the fall of 11th grade rolls around, you'll be ready to knock the PSAT out of the park," Patel said, "because the PSAT, especially this new digital PSAT , is more similar to the digital SAT than ever."
