‘Reach for The Top’ is a story about two heroic young girls. The first part of the story is about a young Mountaineer Santosh Yadav and the second part is about Maria Sharapova who is a tennis sensation in the world. Santosh Yadav was born in a small village in Haryana state. The opinion of her family was of traditional values and they were adamant to keep their prevailing customs but she rose to the highest glory by her solemn determination and hard efforts. In the same way, Maria Sharapova rose to the top of the tennis world through her hard efforts. She became the number one tennis sensation in the modern world.

Santosh was born in the small village of Joniyawas of Rewari District in Haryana. In our society where the birth of a male child is always preferred over that of a female child, Santosh came as the youngest sister to five brothers. From the starting days of her life, she lived life on her own terms. She said that she was always determined that if she chose a correct and sensible path, it were the others around her who had to change and definitely not herself.

Although Santosh’s family could afford to send her to the best schools, owing to the family customs, she was given education at the local village school. When she turned sixteen she was pressurized by her family to get married. That is when she threatened her parents that she would never marry if she did not get a proper education. She even left home and enrolled in a school in Delhi. After passing out from high school, Santosh joined Maharani College in Jaipur. There, she got a room in Kasturba Hostel. Santosh recalls that the Kasturba Hostel faced the Aravalli Hills. From her room, she could watch the villagers going up the hill and suddenly vanishing. On checking it out, she found only a few mountaineers and expressed her wish to join them. To her pleasant surprise, they motivated her to learn climbing.

To view the mountains closely, she decided to join the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi. As her father refused permission, she decided to skip going home after the exam and joined the institute directly. Thereafter, Santosh went on an expedition every year due to which her climbing skills developed rapidly. Also, she developed a remarkable resistance to the cold and high of the mountain. Equipped with an iron will, physical endurance and an amazing mental toughness, she proved herself repeatedly. It was the year 1992 that is four years after she had requested the Aravalli mountaineers to let her join them, when her hard work and sincerity paid off. At a young age of twenty years, Santosh Yadav scaled Mt Everest. And thus, she became the youngest woman in the world to do so.

With her concern for others and desire to work together with her fellow climbers she found a special place in their hearts too. When it was Everest mission in 1992, Santosh Yadav specially cared for a climber who lay dying at the South Col. Unfortunately she couldn’t save him. However, she saved another climber, named Mohan Singh. She shared her oxygen with him.

A year after that Santosh became a member of an Indo-Nepalese Women’s Expedition. She scaled the Everest for the second time and set a record by becoming the only woman to have scaled the Everest twice. Having secured a unique place for herself and India in the history of mountaineering, she was awarded with the Padma Shri in recognition of her achievements.

When she was at the top of the world, it took her some time to accept the importance of the moment. But when she unfurled the Indian tricolor and held it on the roof of the world her feelings were indescribable. Apart from being a mountaineer, Santosh is also an environmentalist. She collected 500 kilograms of garbage from the Himalayas and brought it down.

The story “Reach for the Top” is about those people who dare to do something for their goal and such people get success. The theme of the story tells us about Santosh Yadav’s education, her training, and her success as a woman mountaineer in such a country where discrimination against women is rampant. Her childhood:

Santosh was born in Joniyawas, a village in Haryana. Her parents were wealthy landowners but they

lived in a traditional society. They could send Santosh to a good school. But sent Santosh to the local

school. But Santosh was different. While all other girls wore traditional clothes, she wore shorts. She

wished to live rationally.

Desire for education

Most girls in her village were married at the age of sixteen. Her parents also wanted Santosh to marry when she was sixteen. But she refused. She went to Delhi and joined a good school. Her parents refused to pay for her education. She told them that she would work part time to earn for her education. Her parents agreed to pay for her schooling,

Having passed her school examination, she went to Jaipur and joined a college there.

Love for mountaineering:

At Jaipur Santosh lived in Kasturba Hostel. From her room she could see villagers climbing up the

Aravalli Hills. She had a desire to try climbing herself one day she went to a hill. There she met a few

climbers. They gladly let her join them. They encouraged her to take to climbing.

Joins mountaineering institute:

Santosh wanted to be a climber now. She saved some money and enrolled herself in a course at

Uttarkashi’s Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. She was expected to reach there on 21st May. Her college semester ended on the 19th. So, she could not go home. She went straight to Uttarkashi. She wrote a letter of apology to her father. She had got enrolled at Uttarkashi without his permission.

The youngest woman to conquer Everest:

Thereafter Santosh went to an expedition every year. Her skills developed rapidly. She had remarkable resistance to cold and height. Her seniors were impressed by her physical fitness and mental toughness. Her teammates loved her because she always liked to work together. She was just twenty when she conquered Everest.

She set a record as being the youngest woman to have conquered the highest peak in the world.

Her concern for others:

During the 1992 Everest expedition, Santosh saw a climber dying on South Col. She tried to save

him but she could not. But she was able to save another climber named Mohan Singh. She shared her precious oxygen with him.

Santosh became a member of an Indo-Nepalese Women’s Expedition. They invited her to join them

for another expedition to Everest. She joined them and conquered Everest the second time. Now she set another record. She was the only woman in the world to have conquered Everest twice. It was a unique achievement. It brought honour to her and to India.

In fact, she believed that if she chose a correct and a rational path, others would have to change and align themselves to her choices. Averse to gender discrimination, she resisted the pressure to get married at the young age of sixteen. She declared that she would not marry at all if denied proper education. Defying tradition, she enrolled in a school in Delhi. When her parents refused to pay for her schooling, she informed them that she would work part-time to manage her school fees. Realising their daughter’s determination, they had to submit.

Taking up mountaineering as her career was also an independent decision. However, she tried her best not to hurt her parents and wrote a letter of apology to her father for not having sought his permission before joining the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering at Uttarkashi. Thus, in spite of all the odds, Santosh chose for herself a path which was absolutely unthinkable and unheard of for girls in orthodox society. She, thus, managed to carve her own destiny.

Santosh Yadav is the only woman in the world to scale the Mount Everest twice in less than a year.
She was born in 10 October, 1967 in a very small village in India named Joniyawas of Rewari District in Haryana.
From a very young age Santosh began to live life on her own terms. She did not follow the traditional way of life like other girls in her village.
She wanted to get proper education. Therefore, she enrolled herself in a school in Delhi despite protests from her parents.
After finishing high school, she went to Jaipur to study at Maharani College and got a room in Kasturba Hostel.
While staying in Kasturba Hostel, she became fascinated with mountaineering.
She was so determined that she saved money and joined Uttarkashi’s Nehru Institute of Mountaineering.
In 1992, she scaled the Mount Everest to become the youngest woman in the world to do so.
She scaled the Mount Everest again the next year as a member of Indo-Nepalese Women’s Expedition.
She was honoured with the Padma Shri award by the Indian government in recognition of her achievements.

Almost all people must have written and expressed their opinion in various ways. You can find a few paragraphs that contain someone’s opinion of an issue easily on newspapers or social media.

Expressing opinions could be done anywhere. Even in your class, somtimes you’ll be asked to express your opinion on something.

Opinion paragraph is a paragraph that contains a person’s opinion/thoughts about something that is used to persuade readers to support their opinions.

How to Write an Opinion Paragraph

In order to write a paragraph with a good opinion, there are several things you should do, namely:

Write your opinion in the topic of sentence clearly
Explain each reason in logical order
Use facts to support each reason
Finish your paragraph with a concluding sentence at the end.

The Difference Between Facts and Opinions

Opinions are statements that come from a person’s beliefs/thoughts about something. Expressions such as, “ I believe … “, “ I think that … “, or “ According to me, … ” are being used to express your opinion.

Opinions is different from facts. Opinion could or couldn’t be approved people, while they couldn’t deny facts, because facts are true statements that don’t come from someone’s thoughts.

Read a few sentences below so you can understand the difference between opinions and facts better:

Those are some sentences of facts and opinions. Even the last sentence – Mr. Vance said, “I am a bad father.” – is a fact. The sentence is in the form of the fact that he (Mr. Vance) said something about himself, even what he said was – “I am a bad father” – was an opinion.

While the right column contains several opinion sentences that can be or cannot be approved by everyone.

When you write an opinion paragraph, you can write about something in your mind, but it will give a stronger reason for people to believe it if you add some facts that will support your opinion.

An Example of Opinion Paragraph

Video games and violence.

According to my research, violent video games are harmful to young people. First, playing these games can cause changes in the behavior of young people. Frequent players have poorer grades in school, according to studies by psychologists.

The next reason is that violent video games make young people less sensitive to violence in the real world. The games are toxic to children that make it looks fun to shoot and kill, and the line between play violence and real violence becomes very thin or disappears entirely.

The last reason is that violent video games teach players to use violence to solve problems. Classmates usually tease each other, but don’t make this anger you and do something that you will regret.

In short, I feel that violent video games are harmful to young people and should be controlled – or, even better, banned.
