Beach and my soul, essay on beach cleaning.

Beach is one of my favourite places to visit. I feel so refreshed after visiting a beach. It makes my body and mind active, and I think it is the best place on this planet where we can enjoy ourselves with our friends and family members. I love playing with the sand and building sandcastles with my friends. We made a huge sandcastle on our last visit to the beach and named it ‘The Castle of Wonders’. My friend and I announced ourselves as the two kings of that castle and placed two flags above it. The red flag I put represented me as the king of the castle, and the blue one represented my friend. We also clicked a picture standing before our majestic sandcastle, and I consider it one of the greatest moments of my life.

The unpredictability of waves always amazes me. The way they hit the shores is magical. I love playing with waves; my friends and I run away from the waves to avoid getting our legs washed by them. We also write random names and words on the sand and watch them getting cleared away by the waves. It is an exciting game that fills my heart with bliss. Guide to Beach Photography (Best Gear, Tips & Ideas)

Want to capture amazing photos at the beach? This guide has you covered! Find out our 25 must-know tips for incredible beach photography.

Learn | Photography Guides | By Greg Cromie

In this guide to beach photography, we’re going to provide you with all the knowledge you need to master this skill.

Heading to your local beach provides a fantastic opportunity to practice your photography and capture some stunning shots.

What’s more, there’s a lot you can do with a simple beach scene to create a compelling story.

It’s not as easy as you may think, however – so let’s take a closer look and run through some key beach photography tips.

Table of Contents

25 Tips for Amazing Pictures at the Beach

Heading to your local beach with a camera doesn’t guarantee that you’ll capture great shots. What you need to do is take a few simple steps that will elevate your beach photography and ensure better results.

That’s where these beach photography tips come in. By following our 25 tips for amazing beach photos, you’ll nail it every time.

1. Keep It Clean

Sample beach photography of a person standing in water.

If you’re heading down to your local beach with your expensive camera , you’ll need to take a few precautions to make sure it stays clean and functional.

Cameras have a standard operating temperature – if they get too cold or too hot, they’ll simply stop working. Be aware of leaving your gear in the hot sun for too long.

Once you get sand inside your equipment, you might as well send it off to the repair centre the next day. If your camera and lenses are weather-sealed, this will protect them against dust to a degree.

Make sure to keep the camera and the sand as far away from each other as possible. A well-sealed and durable camera bag can help with this when you’re not actively shooting.

Use a lens blower to remove sand from the front glass element of your lens, then clean it with a lens cloth – if you do it the other way around, you’ll scratch your lens.

2. The Best Lens Choice

Use a wide angle for capturing a landscape scene or to get in more of the surroundings.

Gear used by landscape photographer Roman Koenigshofer on Shotkit.

The best lens for beach photography is going to depend on what you’re planning to shoot.

If you want to capture the vast sweeping beaches and ocean, then a wide-angle lens is best . This way, you’ll capture the expansive landscape.

If you’re shooting portraits but want a little of the landscape for context, using a longer lens makes sense.

To avoid changing lenses and risk getting sand inside the camera, use a zoom lens that covers a 24-70mm focal range.

For better beach photos during the day, add a lens hood . Beaches are sunny and have a lot of glare caused by the whiteness of the sand and the light reflected off the water. This light can wash out an image and make it hazy.

With a lens hood, you cut down the amount of light entering the lens at extreme angles.

3. Use Flash To Beat Shadows

Using a flash even in bright conditions can help you get a properly exposed photo.

While a sunny beach can be incredibly bright, there are still situations where a flash can make all the difference.

It’s especially critical when you’re shooting beach portraits, and you want an even amount of light across your subject’s face .

With the sun beating down, the eyebrows, nose, lips and chin cast deep shadows. This distorts your subject’s features.

With an on-camera flash, you can cast light to push back the shadows without over-exposing the face.

If your flash has a diffuser, then apply it to soften the harshness a flash causes. Alternatively, use a silver or gold reflector to cast the sunlight at your subject from a lower angle.

4. Bring A Tripod For Stability

Use a tripod for beach photography to avoid motion blur.

While a tripod may seem like a hindrance on sandy terrain, they come in handy for various styles of beach photography.

A tripod supports and keeps your camera still and stable . You require this level of stability if you’re doing long exposure work with slow shutter speeds . With a tripod, you won’t have camera shake that spoils your composition.

This is especially handy when shooting sunrise or sunset images.

5. Use Filters To Control Your Exposure

Photograph of beautiful tropical scene.

There’s a broad range of filters ideal for beach photography that optimise your control of exposure .

By using a filter , you can make sure to get well-exposed photos even in the harshest of sun.

Plus, a filter that screws to the front of your lens has the added value of protecting it from the sand. It’s easier to replace a $50 scratched filter than a $500 lens!

A UV filter is the cheapest of the filter options and provides that level of protection. They also filter out the UV light that hits the lens and the sensor – this can otherwise cause unwanted atmospheric effects such as haze or light leaks .

6. Shoot From Above With A Drone

Drone photography of beach in aerial view.

Drone shots of a beach make for fascinating photos – especially with your drone at a considerable elevation.

Drones capture the contrast between the yellows of the sand and the deep aqua blue of the water. The crashing white waves on the beach separate these two elements.

You might also go to the beach with your drone at sunrise or sunset to capture how the changing light varies the landscape from above.

Using a drone adds a whole new perspective to beach photography and can compliment your eye-level shots while out and about.

7. Better Smartphone Photography

Smartphone for photographing beach.

If you don’t want to splash out on a new camera, consider using your smartphone for beach photography.

Most current-generation smartphones feature a camera – or multiple – that produce stunning shots. What’s more, the camera app allows for more than just automatic photography.

With many, you can alter ISO and your shutter speed for creative effects – experiment to get the best results.

Be sure to select your focus area with a tap of the screen, especially if you’re capturing subjects in the foreground.

See more iPhone photography tips here .

8. Shoot In RAW

Couple walking on sand with sun flare.

RAW image files hold all data captured by the camera’s image sensor.

While the files are larger than JPEGs , you have more control when editing the images later on in post-processing.

With files in the RAW format, you can scale back any blown-out highlights and pull the details out of darker shadows.

As beach scenes are often over-bright, you have a better chance of resurrecting an overexposed photo with RAW.

9. Select The Right Shutter Speed

Long exposure photo at the beach.

With your shutter speed, you can control the overall visual pace of an image.

Using a faster shutter speed will freeze your subjects. This is handy for photographing kids playing on the beach, in the water, or for capturing bird-life on the wing.

Slowing your shutter speed allows more light in as the sensor is exposed for longer. You can also use slower shutter speeds to capture motion in your subjects – imagine the same children playing but with a slight blur to indicate movement.

Be mindful of slow shutter speeds causing highlight blow-outs and potential camera shakes – that’s why we recommend bringing a tripod.

10. Try Black & White For Drama

Black and white photo of sand and sea.

Beaches provide a gorgeous pallet of colours including blues, greens, yellows and whites – these colours tend to provide a natural level of contrast.

Another alternative is to edit your beach photographs with a black and white or monochrome filter or preset in your post-processing software.

You’ll notice your pictures display contrast and look interesting thanks to the different tones of the sky, clouds, water and beach.

11. White Balance Effects

White balance makes a photo warmer or cooler.

Many photographers I know entirely ignore the fact that their camera and editing software can make changes to white balance.

White balance allows you to change the colour hue of an image as a whole. This way you can cast a warmer glow over an image by shifting the white balance towards the reds and yellows.

Alternatively, you could cast a colder feel to an image by shifting it towards the greens and blues.

Try playing with the white balance while editing your beach pictures to see what different effects you can achieve.

My biggest piece of advice with white balance control is to keep it subtle and not overdo it. Refer to our white balance chart for a closer look.

12. Control Exposure Compensation

Use exposure compensation or spot metering mode to avoid exposure problems with portraits.

With the challenging lighting found in beach photography, it will help to master the exposure compensation of your camera.

Depending on the style of camera you’re using, there’ll be an exposure compensation setting in the menu or on a dedicated dial .

Cameras are intelligent devices, and when shooting in Auto, they make all the decisions for you. In some situations, they don’t always make the best decisions.

With so much light hitting the image sensor, the camera will reduce exposure to compensate. If you want greater control and improved exposure, switch your camera to manual mode and manage the exposure compensation yourself.

If you’re shooting a portrait , you can also try switching your metering mode to spot metering  as this will help with correctly exposing the person’s face.

13. Create Unique Compositions

Using the rule of thirds in ocean photo.

Creating an exciting composition with your beach photography makes your pictures stand out.

The composition is a collection of elements in your image. At the beach, these include the sky, clouds, horizon, waves, sand, pebbles, shells, tall grass, pathways and rock formations – not to mention the additional elements such as people and pets enjoying the beach.

Take a moment to scan the scene and look for interesting elements as well as unique shooting angles to build upon your composition.

Look for features that create excitement, drama and mood, and experiment with different ways to incorporate these into your beach pictures.

14. Select Focus Points

Heart in the sand summer photography.

Imagine a wide-angle beach shot where the sand, sea and sky stretch out forever. While there’s a lot of beauty and value in a photo like this, it’s still missing something.

A focus point is an element or subject within your composition that draws the viewer into the image. The right focus points can completely change the effect of your beach photography.

Imagine that same vast beach scene with the addition of a single figure walking along with a long scarf blowing in the wind.

You now have a composition that draws in your viewer and creates a context to your story.

15. Avoid The Masses

Landscapes with blue skies, rocks, trees and sand can result in beautiful beach images.

When capturing beach photographs that highlight the natural beauty of the environment, the last thing you need is a bunch of people in the way.

To avoid the crowds, arrive when there aren’t other people at the beach.

Early morning is usually the best as people love to visit the beach after work and watch the sunset. But even some beaches are popular in the morning with dog-walkers and swimmers – especially in the heat of summer .

If you want to focus your beach photography on the tranquillity of nature, do some research and spend a couple of early mornings and evenings driving around to check out the activity. Look for quieter beaches that are considered hidden gems.

16. Include People In Your Shots

Add someone into your shot to give a focal point.

Ok, we just talked about avoiding crowds in beach photography.

But while it’s annoying to have people show up to your hidden gem of a beach during your shoot, you can work them into your composition.

A lone walker with their dog racing ahead of them makes for a perfect photo.

Alternatively, a group of fashion-conscious teens hanging out, or even a couple arm in arm add a lot of narrative to your landscape images.

Be mindful of who you’re photographing and be sure to avoid revealing someone’s identity.

17. Bring The Kids For Fun

Express your creativity in children and family beach photos.

Kids love being at the beach, and they’re at the height of happiness and energy at such times. So why not bring them with you?

Kids at play are distracted from the world around them, so it’ll be easy to capture some gorgeous candid beach pics.

Whether they’re splashing in the water, building a castle, or hunting in rock pools, get in nice and close and capture their play.

18. Use Natural Props

A campfire on the sand is a great example of an effective beach photo.

When taking pictures of the beach, find natural props around you to give them interest.

Consider having a local plant species as your focal point. Shooting through tall grass in the foreground with a stunning background looks impressive.

Don’t bring flowers from home as introducing a foreign plant species can have a dramatic impact on the local environment.

If there’s no vegetation nearby, hunt for feathers dropped by sea-birds or even pieces of driftwood. Plant these into the sand at interesting angles to make a frame for your composition or a foreground subject.

Speaking of driftwood, if allowed, build a small beach campfire and shoot through that or capture the sparks at play.

19. Shoot Sun Stars

Sun stars are a good technique to use in sea images.

Sun stars occur when a cliff, tree or outcropping of rock partially blocks the sun. When you point your lens directly at the sun, the light will split into beams.

The aperture blades within your lens catch the light and cause this effect.

To achieve sun stars, use a narrow aperture on your lens to reduce the light hitting the image sensor.

Sun stars add narrative to beach photography on a hot day – the sun appears to beat down on the scene.

20. Create Silhouettes

Sunrises and sunsets are great opportunities for silhouette images.

Silhouettes are another great trick to have up your beach photography sleeve.

Creating a silhouette or backlight photo is simple.

Thanks to the abundance of glaring sunlight, you can position your subject directly in front of the sun.

They’ll appear with a halo of light around their body, and their hair will glow with the filtered light. But their body and facial features will appear as a black silhouette.

Get your subject to dance , run or just play on the beach and the contrast between the black and bright areas will tell the story.

21. Watch The Horizon

Align your photos to the horizons.

One of the golden rules of photography is to have your pictures correctly orientated against an imaginary horizon.

Fortunately, in beach photography, the horizon is not imagined – it’s right there! Use it as a guide to ensure that your images are correctly aligned.

Apply the rule of thirds so that the horizon line doesn’t sit in the middle of the frame. Position the horizon line higher in the frame to get more of the foreground or lower in the frame for more of the background.

22. Use Reflections

Reflections in the sand make for striking exposures.

In beach photography, you’ll get a lot of light bouncing off the water and the sand – hence the need to carefully control your exposure.

Imagine being able to capture the reflection of your child playing in a still rockpool. Or using the reflection from a puddle of water left by the retreating tide.

(Remember too that if you can always ‘fake’ reflections in the water, using a powerful image editor called Luminar .)

Use the water to form a core part of your composition. Taking a moment to thoroughly explore all the elements you could use in a composition is essential – before you even grab your camera.

See our guide for more tips on water reflection photography here .

23. Shoot At Golden Hour

Take advantage of the lighting conditions during the golden hours.

Golden hour is a photography term to describe the time of day just after sunrise and just before sunset.

During the golden hour, the light is far softer and warmer in colour. Subjects have a warm glow that makes skin-tones pop.

Using this time window to your advantage gives your images a lot more punch and character than those shot at midday.

Plus, during the morning golden hour there are far fewer people on the beach. For more tips to shooting photos at golden hour, see our guide .

24. Check The Weather

Capture the colors and drama of a beach environment by timing your visit with the weather.

I recommend that any outdoor photography excursion includes a thorough check of the weather forecast.

There’s no point showing up to the beach with your expensive camera if it’s raining cats and dogs… Or is there?

While the temptation is to only undertake beach shots when it’s hot and sunny, there’s a lot to be said for the moods foul weather could create.

Provided your camera can withstand the elements, capturing beach photography in the middle of a storm or on a cold foggy morning makes for compelling images.

Head to the beach in any type of weather – you’ll be amazed at how the same location takes on drastically different moods.

25. Always Be Safe

Avoid problems and challenges as a photographer by being prepared.

Personal safety as a photographer should always be on your mind regardless of shooting in a dark alley or climbing a peak to capture an eagle.

On the beach, watch for the impacts of too much sun – dress appropriately, stay hydrated and take precautions to protect yourself from the UV rays.

Be aware of safety issues such as sea life that washes up on the beach, rocky outcroppings and the odd stray ball from nearby beach cricket.

And finally, be respectful of the environment and try not to disturb any wildlife you find during your photographic adventures.

Beach Photography FAQs

What settings should I use for beach photography?

The settings you use will depend on what you’re shooting (landscape, beach portraits, etc) and the time of day. In the mid-day sun, you’ll want a fast shutter speed, low ISO and narrow aperture. During golden hour or sunset, you may need to slow your shutter speed and/or widen your aperture.

How do I take a good beach picture of the family?

First, position the family to ensure there’s some light falling on them from the front (backlight will turn everyone into silhouettes). Use a narrow aperture so you get everyone in focus – f/8 or higher should do it – then adjust your ISO and shutter speed accordingly (alternatively, you can use Aperture Priority mode and your camera will decide those for you).

How do I take sunset photos at the beach?

If you’re shooting a beach landscape, keep your aperture narrow (a high f-number) to get more of the scene in focus. As the light will be diminishing, you may need to bump up your ISO or use a longer shutter speed with a tripod. If you want to shoot silhouettes against the sunset, you can open the aperture wider, just remember to expose for the sky and keep your subjects dark.

Getting Better Beach Photos | Final Words

Heading to the beach with your camera and a few ideas is a great way to spend a day. Not only are you spoiled for choice in creating unique compositions, but you’ll also learn a thing or two about your photography skills and abilities.

Hopefully, these beach photography tips have given you some extra ideas and guidance.

I’m a Melbourne-based street photographer and blogger. I love to travel to Japan to photograph and document its dynamic people and culture.

Do you have tips for me as I will be photographing a group of 16-22 on the beach (including several small children) and planning to do this just before sunset. I plan to shoot on Manual which I’m still trying to master. Might I be better off to shoot on aperture? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

At sunset is a tricky one as the light will change quickly, Nettie – I’d stick to aperture priority and keep adjusting your ISO as the light gets lower. Also choosing a single WB mode (as opposed to auto WB) will help, especially when it comes time to edit the photos. Let us know how you get on!

Despite living within mile of the sea in Cornwall, I am paranoid about taking my camera when the wind is blowing onshore. How bad for kit are salt laden winds (assuming I manage to keep sand out of the camera)? During the winter months , we we have strong onshore winds for the majority of the time. I have a fuji x100t and plan to upgrade it to an x100v but am still nervous abut this.

I get what you mean. We spend a lot of money on camera gear and the thought of exposing it to the elements is nerve-wracking. Salt laden winds are not ideal that’s for sure. Although I have a friend here in Victoria that mostly shoots on the beach and often captures long exposures of waves crashing into rocks. His older Fuji’s lasted for years under these conditions. If you are going to shoot with a weather-sealed body, like the X100V, be sure to go the extra step and purchase the adapter ring and a filter to make it 100% weather-sealed. And, be super diligent about your cleaning routine. Best of luck.

P3 English Composition At The Beach

Writing compositions (along with Paper 2 components) is a weekly practice in both P3 and P4 classes at the centre. However, the end goal for each term is different for both levels. The first term for the P3s was focused on Planning. Writing down their ideas to form their stories is the start of all good writers. When they are able to plan out their stories, they are able to paragraph their stories correctly.

In the first term, I guided them on their planning until I felt that they were able to differentiate on how to plan for each paragraph . Now they have begun to plan certain sections on their own.

Last week we worked on a composition entitled  At The Beach.  I took the pictures from the P4 English Mages assessment book . To be honest, the pictures are a little strange, especially the one showing the crab dangling from a character’s back. However, my students found it amusing. One even asked me if her  Solution  could be catching the crab and having a barbecue with it! I have taken the model composition, (after some corrections,) from her. As you can see, we decided against the barbecue  Solution  :p

P3 English Composition At The Beach

Introduction.

(introduction of setting & characters ) It was the start of the June holidays. My family and I were on our vacation at a beach resort in Thailand. One morning, we decided to go to the beach near the resort.  (description of the setting – the beach)  The sun was shining brightly and the sound of the waves was soothing as it lapped gently. I liked the relaxing feel of the soft, white sand under my feet. It was such a relaxing holiday except for my mischievous cousin, Jason. He was always getting into trouble.

(use of dialogue)  Father said, “Let’s have a family sandcastle contest!”

                I shouted, “Yeah!”

(description of problem)  However, Jason, was not interested in the contest. Instead, he found a stick and started digging up the sand. While digging, he found a baby crab that started to crawl up his stick. I warned him to leave the baby crab alone but he continued to provoke it. He started to poke the crab and threw it in the air. I sighed and went back to building my sandcastle.

(descriptive climax)  Suddenly, I heard a loud yelp. “Ouch!”Jason cried. I whipped my head back in shock. I ran as fast as lightning to ask Jason what had happened. He pointed frantically to his back. At first I could not see anything wrong but when I looked more closely,  I gasped when I saw what it was.

“Father! Father! There is a crab on Jason’s back. Help father!” I screamed at the top of my lungs.

Father ran over and took a look at Jason’s back. He gently pried the crab from his back and threw it into the sea. There was a big, red wound on his back and blood seeped from it.

Jason was crying and in a lot of pain so father whipped out his mobile phone and called the nearest hospital to the beach. In fifteen minutes, the ambulance arrived and sent Jason to the hospital. The doctor gave cleaned Jason’s wound and bandaged it.

(ending – theme)  Even though Jason had a bad experience, we still continued to enjoy our holidays at the beach.  Once bitten twice shy. Jason learnt his lesson well and was not mischievous anymore.

Beach Photography Tips

A quick guide to beach photos.

It’s summer here in Australia and I’ve found myself at the beach every single day. Whether it’s to walk the dog, take a morning swim or photograph a beautiful sunset I find it so relaxing and a great place to test out new photography techniques.

Capturing beach landscapes sounds pretty easy but pointing your camera out to sea and hoping the settings are correct won’t create an amazing photograph. It’s all about reading the scene, knowing how to find the best light and composing a creative image to make your beach photo stand out from the millions of others taken this summer.

Below are some tips and techniques I use when photographing at the beach which I hope can help you create your own beautiful shots when summer comes around in your part of the world or when you escape to that exotic island you’ve been dreaming of.

Beach Photography Settings – Sun and the sand

During the middle of the day you’ll see the white sand and blue skies are shining but an incorrect setting on your camera could make that sand really glow and take away the vibrant colours of the sky and water. To avoid this take a quick test shot once you arrive to see how the scene is looking through your lens and then adjust as needed. Generally you’ll need a low ISO like 100 or if your camera allows it even lower, an aperture of f/4 along with an exposure of +0.3 just to ensure the image isn’t too dull.

a day at the beach picture composition

Beach Photography Settings: Slow shutter – Make the waves dance

Beaches mean waves and water so what better place is there to practice your slow shutter shots!? Making waves blur, dance and glide through your photo will add an element of drama and intrigue turning a standard beach photo into a beautiful scene people will love staring at.

To create movement in the water you’ll need to drop your ISO down really low, increase your aperture to f/22 or the highest your camera will allow and then usually have your exposure set at +0.3 to ensure the waves are lit up a little bit but not too much that you’ll lose detail. The point of this is to keep your shutter open longer and give enough time for the waves to move through the image.

If you find the entire photo is blurry then it’s simply a matter of bring down the aperture to something more manageable like f/10 or increasing your ISO to around 200 or 400 depending on the time of day. There is no perfect setting it’s just a matter of finding what works best for you with the light you’re given on the day.

The best time to attempt the slow shutter shots is in low light so sunrise or sunset. I find the best colours are just after the sun has set in the afternoon when you still have enough light in the sky for the pinks and purples but it’s dark enough to make the waves blur beautifully.

With slow shutter shots it’s essential to stay really still so either take a tripod, learn to hold your breath (this is my technique) or balance your camera on the sand for a unique viewpoint.

Beach Photography Tips – Reflections on wet sand

I love a good reflection shot and am on the endless hunt for the perfect mirror image of an incredible landscape. In the meantime though beaches are a great places to test out your reflection photography because when the water has just trickled over the sand it leaves a little shine which you can use as your mirror. If the water is super still then you can try this with any body of water such as a lake or pool but just after a wave has washed over the shoreline you’ll find about 2mm of water is left and this is what works great as a reflective surface. Create some fun by having a friend jumping a short distance away and you’ll find it reflects beautifully in the sand.

Beach Photography Settings – White Balance

If you’re looking to add some warmth to your beach photo switch your White Balance to ‘cloudy’ mode which will create a beautiful warm tone to your image. This is particularly useful if you’re photographing the beach at sunrise or dusk when the colours in the sky and water are enhanced by changing your White Balance.

In the middle of the day it’s best to keep your White Balance on ‘sunny’ or even auto to keep the sand nice and white and the sea a beautiful rich blue.

Beach Photos and Exposure

It can be fun to play around with exposure levels on the beach because the white sands can work as a reflective screen to the sun. As the sand lights up so will objects around or above meaning you can highlight trees or people just by adding a little extra exposure to your image. Typically I keep mine at around +0.7 when I have a subject in the frame and am always sure to point the subject toward the sun enabling maximum light.

Beach Photography Composition

Making a scene known around the world look different can be quite a challenge. Most photographs of the beach are taken looking straight out to the horizon with a little sand, a little water and a lot of sky so try and think outside the box to change it up. Lying on the sand can alter the perspective or focusing on the grainy patterns of sand can also make your shot a little more creative than the norm.

If you have some land, rocks or an island to focus on this will also work well to compose the scene by keeping the ocean horizon to the left or right of the image.

Keeping your composition quite minimal can produce some stunning results when capturing beach photos. Using the rule of thirds and placing your subject, the water or sand, in the lower portion of your frame can draw the view in and have them imagining they’re standing right there with you.

Beach Photography Tips – Get wet

If you’ve been reading my blog it’s pretty obvious I love jumping in the ocean with my camera and I stand by it being one of the best ways to capture the beach! Being amongst the environment will allow you to photograph the beach in a new way adding the element of water into your shot. Grab yourself an underwater housing for your camera or even a waterproof case for your iPhone!

Underwater photography adds a refreshing take on beach photos so take a read of my guide to ‘ Underwater photography for Beginners ‘ or a more recent ‘ Setting the Scene – Underwater Photography ‘ to see if it could work for your photos.

Depending on the result you wish to achieve, it’s crucial to select the best time of day to visit the beach for photography. Sunset is by far the most popular choice because you’ll get the glow of the sun dipping near the horizon along with the warm colours in the sky. For portrait photography mid-afternoon is a great time when you’ve still got the blue colours in the sky and ocean but the light isn’t as harsh as earlier in the day meaning your subjects won’t blink or squint as much.

This is almost the same as composition but framing can be even more creative. Look for paths that lead down to the beach which will make a great line of sight within a photograph. Trees can also be a great contrast to the sand and sea so incorporate them by placing the beach in the centre of the image and framing the rest with your chosen element.

Work with clouds

If there are clouds in the sky don’t cancel your beach photo trip! Some of the best times to photograph at the beach are when there are big fluffy white clouds or giant storms approaching. Dramatic shots with dark grumpy clouds look incredible against the water which is usually glowing in contrast to the sky.

Hi! These are very wonderful tips and very beautiful pictures! I enjoyed reading the tips you gave because they are concise and clear. It seems very easy to follow the tips you gave out and I can see that you have many experiences with beach photography. As a traveler who enjoys photography myself, I also relate to using the techniques you gave out in this post. I highly agree on some tips you gave such as timing and composition. I think it will defeat the point of a beach when we visit it during a bad weather, so timing and composition is very important to consider. Other than those tips, I think there is also one more thing that photography in any form relies on heavily, which is a moment. If a moment is captured precisely, I think it would make the photograph even more beautiful than just mere composition and right lighting. What do you think about this? Do you agree or do you think it is not as vital?

Cheers, Sismita

Hi Sismita, thanks for your comment! I absolutely agree, being able to capture a moment is crucial in photography, whether that moment is dolphins jumping at sunset or someone running along the beach. If you’re hoping to capture a scene with a unique image then being prepared for the unexpected is the best way to go about it. Reacting quickly with the correct settings, light and composition usually results in a beautiful photo.

Would you recommend prime lens or zoom lens to capture great beach images? I heard fisheye lens could be an option as well.

Lisa Michele Burns

July 1, 2021 at 10:47 am

The fisheye lens can offer a little distortion so if you’re after the details of a beach scene I’d opt for a zoom lens. If however you’re after a striking wide-angle image of the entire beach scene, then a wide-angle lens will suit best.

Beach Description Essay

Looking for simple and beautiful descriptive writing about a beach in summer? The beach description essay below is just what you need! Get inspired for your own creative writing with us.

Introduction

Description of a beach.

Summer is the perfect time for individuals to visit and enjoy the marvelous scenes along the coast. In addition, the feelings and experiences felt on the beach during the summer are always fantastic. Several sceneries and experiences are seen and felt at the beach during summer. These include; the plantation along the beach and inside the sea, the animals, the waters, and the people found on the beach.

The beach appears to be alive and joyful with the presence of the natural vegetation. There are evergreen plantations both along and inside the beach. Images of buoyant seaweeds can be seen along the shore. Palms trees are seen to stand tall along the beach, dancing to the tune of the breeze emanating from the waters of the sea.

The sea grapes and the sea oats are also observed gathered in clusters in the sea next to the shore. Their colored flowers are splendid and brighten at the shining of the summer sun. The sweet scent of the flower grapes sends a signal to the world about the hope brought by nature.

The atmosphere is fully intensified by the aroma produced by the buoyant sea flowers. In addition, from afar, images of leafless trees are also observed. The perfect combination of the vegetation along the beach and inside the sea displays the beauty of nature to the highest peak.

It mesmerizes the eyes to gaze at the beautiful creatures that hover all over the beach and on the deep-sea waters. There are sights of beautiful birds that fly all over the dry shoreland and over the seawaters. Their colored feathers brightened the sea with a marvelous appearance at their illumination by the sun’s rays.

There are varieties of birds that are in the vicinity. For instance, there are pelicans and seagulls. Pelicans are seen hovering over the sand, singing sweet melodies that make the atmosphere at the beach vibrant. The seagulls are also observed to be flying over the seawater in small groups. Some of the birds are gathered in groups spreading the wings that cloaked a soft shadow on the gentle water ripples.

Next to the shore, there are sea turtles that seem to enjoy the summer heat from the sun. Their eggs are also seen to be exposed on the sand by the children that play on the shoreline. Bees are seen flying from one flower to another over the sea grapes. The humming of the bees as they gather nectar from the sea flowers attracts insect-eating birds.

Large crowds are observed all over the seashore. These people come to enjoy themselves on the beach at this period of the year. In the sea, people of all ages and sexes are seen swimming and playing with the cool seawater. The scorching heat from the summer sun is felt on the forehead of all individuals.

This makes the people chill themselves in the cool waters of the sea. The children are seen playing beach ball on the shoreline. Some children are also seen pelt each other with sand on the shoreline. Besides, young boys are observed climbing tall palm trees to gather fruits.

What is more, several activities take place along and inside the shoreline. Vendors are seen carrying ice creams and soft drinks all over the shoreline. Views of homes, hotels, and other buildings that run along the peak of the beach are also seen. On the sand where children play, pieces of shells are scattered.

In most cases, children collect the shells for fun. In the shades built along the shoreline, people are seen reading books, journals, and magazines. Some are seen idling on the sand, while few adults are observed playing football.

However, there is a disgusting scene of plastic bags, cigarette butts, food wrappers, and beer bottles along the beach. These items seem to pollute the entire shoreline and the seawater.

Anglers are also observed far into the sea casting large nets into the waters to have a bulk catch of their prey. Some of the anglers are also observed perching on the edge of the shore carrying sticks in their hands. Their faces displayed the anticipation that they had for their prey.

The deep waters of the sea produce a marvelous view for anyone who gazes at the sea. The water is seen to be slowly running low on the shore. Small waves are also observed crashing on the shoreline. The surface of the sea is seen to appear blue in color.

However, some portions are also seen to have the spectrum that results from the sun’s refracted rays. Deep inside the sea, there are high waves that lift boats up and down mightily. The shimmering waves of the sea that are clear and blue mirror the rays of the hot sun. The refreshing breeze that emanates from the seawater is enjoyable.

In conclusion, the beach has a perfect view and activities that are delightful to experience during the summer. It is a place that everyone would love to be at all times.

English Summary

A Day at the Beach Essay

A beach is an area of sand or small stones around the sea. I spent a day at Marina Beach in Chennai when I went there with my family on vacations. It was one of the best days of my life. I always wanted to visit the beach because it is a lot of fun.

Before we reached the beach, we bought caps and swimming dresses at the shops. When we reached the beach, I was so excited because everyone was enjoying the sea. Other children were playing with sand.

The beach was surrounded by dense trees and it was very clean. My mother sat on the sand under a tree and took out a book to read. My sister and I went to play with the water in the sea. We splashed water on each other and enjoyed the sea waves when they made us go up and down. After some time, we came back. Then I and my sister made a sandcastle. I also collected shells on the beach and we decorated the castle with them.

We bought fruits on the beach and also drank coconut water after that. When it was evening, we saw the setting sun. It looked like the sun was going inside the sea. We took a lot of pictures of this scene.

The beach became more splendid when the sky turned red. After six o’clock, we went to the changing room and took bath and changed our clothes because the guards did not allow us to be on the beach after sunset. We came back to our hotel and we all talked about our day. We all were so happy because the day was well spent.

Practice listening and speaking English for daily communication – A Day at the Beach

English for daily communication level 2

A Day at the Beach

When the hot summer weather arrives, many people like to cool off by visiting the beach.

Often, there is a cool breeze that comes off the water.

And, of course, the water itself is cool and refreshing.

One of the favourite activities at the beach is building sandcastles.

Children use small shovels and pails to move the sand.

They can build small forts and castles by carefully forming and shaping the sand.

Building sandcastles is a lot of fun, but you shouldn’t build them too close to the water: a wave might come and wash your sandcastle away!

There are also many games that people like to play at the beach.

Some people play catch with a small plastic disc called a Frisbee.

The Frisbee glides smoothly through the air.

Other people like to play beach volleyball in the soft sand.

Some people prefer just to relax on the beach.

They like to lie down on a blanket and feel the warm sunshine.

I like to sit on the beach with an ice-cream cone.

But you have to eat it quickly, before it melts.

Of course, the main attraction of a beach is the water.

Many children learn to swim at the beach, and enjoy playing in the water.

Some people like to swim vigorously.

Other people like to relax in the water on an inflatable, floating mattress.

Other people just wade around in the water, as a way to keep cool.

When it is a windy day, some people try sports such as surfing.

Going to the beach is surely one of the best ways to spend a summer day!

Earthquake, aftershocks rattle NYC and beyond: "One of the largest" East Coast quakes in the last century

By Jesse Zanger

Updated on: April 6, 2024 / 11:47 AM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK - New York City and its surrounding area were hit by a significant earthquake and multiple aftershocks Friday.

A 3.8 magnitude aftershock hit 37 miles west of New York City near Gladstone, New Jersey, around 6 p.m. Friday. It struck 9.7 kilometers deep and was felt as far away as Long Island, where there were reports of houses shaking.

It was initially reported to be 4.0 magnitude, but was later confirmed to be 3.8. Seismologists said aftershocks could  continue for a week .

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said there were no immediate reports of significant damage after that aftershock, which came on the heels of Friday morning's 4.8 magnitude earthquake - one of the largest quakes to hit the region in a century.

The quake hit at approximately 10:23 a.m., startling everyone. It struck 4.7 kilometers below the surface and  was centered in Readington Township, N.J. , about 40 miles west of New York City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Walls rattled and shelves shook throughout the area. Videos captured  various views of the moment the earthquake hit .

The impact was felt throughout the Tri-State Area, as well as in  Philadelphia  and as far away as  Baltimore . The USGS said the impact was felt all the way from Maine to Washington, D.C.

There were multiple aftershocks after the earthquake hit. Before Friday evening's 3.8, there were several earlier in the day. An hour after the initial impact, a 2.0 aftershock struck west of Bedminster, N.J. At around 12:30 p.m., there was a 1.8 magnitude aftershock, another 2.0 aftershock at 1:14 p.m., and another 2.0 aftershock shortly before 3 p.m.

"Aftershocks of these sizes are normal and are not expected to cause further damage," Hochul wrote on X.

Map shows area affected by a 4.7 earthquake, centered in New Jersey

"One of the largest earthquakes on the East Coast in the last century"

"We're taking this extremely seriously and here's why. There's always the possibility of aftershocks. We have not felt a magnitude of this earthquake since about 2011 ," Hochul said. "This is one of the largest earthquakes on the East Coast to occur in the last century."

Hochul said she has started a damage assessment across the state , and spoke with New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, since the quake's epicenter was located in the Garden State.

"It's been an unsettling day, to say the least," Hochul said.

Murphy, who was at a conference out of state when the quake hit, touted the response locally .

"The reaction was swift and very impressive by the likes of the Port Authority, our State Police opening up its emergency operations center, local and county officials," Murphy said.

He said the top infrastructure concern is the Hudson River tunnels, though so far there were no reports of major damage.

"The rail tunnels were built in, finished in 1911, which is why we're building two new ones," Murphy said.

NYC Mayor Adams: "New Yorkers should go about their normal day"

New York City officials said there have been no reports of major impacts across the city.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said though there's always a concern about aftershocks , "New Yorkers should go about their normal day. First responders are working to make sure the city's safe."

In the event of an aftershock, Adams said people should "drop to the floor, cover your head and neck, and take cover under a solid piece of furniture next to an interior wall, or in a doorway."

Adams also said he's been in touch with the White House.

"Earthquakes don't happen every day in New York, so this can be extremely traumatic - the number of texts, calls and inquiries that people sent out not only to our administration, but to family members. Check in on them. We know how this can impact you," Adams said.

"We activated our protocols for this earthquake. We immediately started coordinating with all city, state, federal and our utility partners. Public notifications were sent out both by Notify NYC and our wireless emergency alert system," New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Zachary Iscol said.

"We are putting on additional construction and engineering professionals from this point on over the weekend, so if reports do come in, we will be ready to respond," Department of Buildings Commissioner James Oddo said.

City officials say if people sees cracks in their home or business as a result of the earthquake , they should call 311.

New York City public schools were told to continue operations and hold dismissal as normal.

"Parents do not need to pick up their child early as a result of today's earthquake. Additionally, all after-school programs will continue as planned," New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks said. " All of our students across the school system are safe . All of our staff are safe. We have no reports of any structural damage to any of our school facilities, while many schools in fact felt some tremors from the earthquake."

Adams said he was at a Youth Gun Summit at Gracie Mansion and did not feel the quake himself.

"I would encourage all New Yorkers to use this as a wakeup call to make sure that they are prepared for future seismic activity. Know what to do - know not to evacuate outside your building. Know if you are outside to stay away from power lines or things that can collapse. Make sure you have emergency supplies on hand. Make sure you have a plan for your family," Iscol said.

Traffic, transit and airport impacts of the quake

The quake caused temporary ground stops at John F. Kennedy and Newark Liberty airports. There were delays as well at LaGuardia as crews checked for damage to the airports and runways

The MTA said it is inspecting all New York City-area bridges and tunnels . Officials also said subway tunnels were checked.

"Initial inspections show there was not damage to any MTA infrastructure, but we will continue to monitor the situation closely," the MTA posted on X.

Amtrak and MTA service remained on their full schedule, Hochul said.

New Yorkers, area residents shaken up by unusual earthquake

The experience was more than enough to rattle some New Yorkers .

"I was laying in my bed, and my whole apartment building started shaking. I started freaking out," one New York City resident told CBS New York's Elijah Westbrook.

"My class was scared. So my friends, they went next to me and gave me a hug," 6-year-old Trinity Morales told CBS New York's Jennifer Bisram.

"I was sound asleep. I got home late last night, had a little bit of water in the basement, so I was up until like 4:30. I was sound asleep at 10:23. This thing rattled me up," CBS New York's Lonnie Quinn said. "I initially thought it was wind, because my windows were rattling and shaking. Looked outside, the trees were not blowing. I thought, what is that?"

Cracks in walls were visible in an apartment in Berkeley Heights, N.J.

The Empire State Building had bit of fun after the quake .

"I AM FINE," the building posted on X.

More history of earthquakes in New York

It's not the first time the East Coast and New York City have been hit with a quake. A 5.0 quake was measured in New York City in 1884.

By way of comparison, a 4.0 earthquake is the equivalent of 33,000 pounds of explosive going off at any one time. A 5.0 earthquake is the equivalent of a million pounds of explosives. The record for New Jersey is a 5.3.

There's a major fault line in New Jersey called the Ramapo Fault, which stems from the Appalachian mountains, and there are at least five smaller fault lines under Manhattan island.

The quake comes just a few months after the USGS warned nearly 75% of the United States could face damaging quakes in the next 100 years .

In 2011, a 5.8 quake struck in Virginia and rattled the entire East Coast .

Laguna Beach officials highlight community services at State of the City event

Laguna Beach city officials are looking forward to continued progress on some priority projects, including expanded programming and enhanced public safety capabilities in South Laguna.

An update on the status of the Laguna Beach Community and Recreation Center was a topic of discussion at the State of the City luncheon at the Montage Laguna Beach on Tuesday.

Acquired from the Diocese of Orange for $23 million in December 2022, the 6.5-acre property, now home to the center, was formerly the St. Catherine of Siena school site . It has since morphed into a community-serving facility, equipped to handle a variety of art classes and athletic activities. The transformation has included the addition of temporary skate ramps .

“The acquisition of this property has afforded us the opportunity to respond more quickly to safety-related issues in South Laguna,” Mayor Sue Kempf said in a video played at the event. “We have added both police and marine safety substations to the facility, and soon we’ll have a fully equipped emergency operations center.”

Acting City Manager Gavin Curran and Mayor Sue Kempf at the Laguna Beach State of the City address on Tuesday.

Kempf’s video presentation also made reference to several statistics regarding city departments. Marine safety personnel executed more than 2,300 rescues in South Laguna last year. The city also kick-started a mobile mental health program with Be Well OC, averaging over 400 community contacts per month.

After an in-house ambulance service was started in 2022, the fire department reported an average emergency response time of seven minutes by its ambulances in 2023.

Laguna Local, a free on-demand transit service, had 63,000 boardings in its first year.

During her brief remarks following the video, Kempf said Laguna Beach continues to work toward filling the positions of city manager and community development director permanently. She called Assistant City Manager Gavin Curran, who is currently serving as acting city manager, the “natural choice” to lead the city in the interim.

Police Chief Jeff Calvert, Fire Chief Niko King, and Marine Safety Captain Kai Bond, from left, sit on a panel on Tuesday.

Public Works Director Mark McAvoy was popular among a panel of city officials, as he was called upon to respond to questions about a number of projects in town. They included queries about the ever-present construction along Coast Highway and Laguna Canyon Road.

“The Caltrans project is wrapping up soon,” McAvoy said regarding the construction on Laguna Canyon Road. “That basically took care of the bottleneck as you head northbound, where you get to El Toro [Road], it goes to two [lanes], it necks down to one and back to two, which creates traffic issues. Caltrans is completing that gap closure there by widening it out.”

There is also a Southern California Edison utility undergrounding project in the area expected to begin in the next couple of months, McAvoy added.

As for the sidewalk improvement project along Coast Highway, McAvoy recognized the longevity of the work in town.

Members of the Laguna Beach Democratic Club, including Nia Evans and Barbara McMurray, from left, center, on Tuesday.

“I promise the answer is not never,” McAvoy prefaced his response to a question regarding the expected date of completion for the work. When finished, the city will have a continuous sidewalk from Ledroit Street to 5th Avenue.

The event on Tuesday, attended by a few hundred people, was put on by the Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce. Paula Hornbuckle-Arnold, the organization’s board chair, shared some key dates.

The chamber’s annual golf tournament will take place on May 14 at Strawberry Farms Golf Club in Irvine. The Taste of Laguna food and music festival will be back on Oct. 3 at the Festival of Arts.

In an election year, the chamber will co-host a City Council candidates forum with the Laguna Board of Realtors and Voice of Laguna at City Hall on Oct. 23.
