Long and Short Computer Essay

The term computer was once used to refer to a person who did computation, unlike today. The development of early prototypes that led to the modern computer is credited to many individuals throughout history. A series of breakthroughs, beginning with transistor computers and then integrated circuit computers, resulted in the development of transistor technology and the integrated circuit chip, causing digital computers to largely replace analogue computers.

In this essay, we will discuss the various components and types of computers and talk about their uses in various fields.

Long Computer Essay in English

A computer is an electronic tool that manipulates data or information. It can store, retrieve, and process information. We can type documents, send emails, play games, and browse the Web using a computer. It can also be used to edit spreadsheets, presentations, and even videos, or create them.

Early computers were conceived only as devices for calculating. Simple manual devices such as the abacus have helped individuals do calculations since ancient times. Some mechanical devices were built early in the Industrial Revolution to automate long, tedious tasks, such as guiding patterns for looms. In the early 20th century, more sophisticated electrical machines performed specialized analogue calculations.

Common Components of Computers

All those parts of a computer that are tangible physical objects are covered under the term hardware. The hardware includes circuits, computer chips, graphics cards, sound cards, memory (RAM), motherboards, displays, power supplies, cables, keyboards, printers and "mice" input devices.

There are five main hardware components:

Input Devices:

These are devices that are used to enter data/information in the central processing unit. Example- keyboard, mouse, scanner, document reader, barcode reader, optical character reader, magnetic reader etc.

Output Devices:

These are devices that provide the processed data/information into human-readable form. Example- monitor, printer, speaker, projector etc.

Control Unit:

The control unit handles the various components of the computer; it reads and interprets (decodes) the instructions for the program, transforming them into control signals that activate other computer parts.

Arithmetic Logic Unit:

It is capable of performing arithmetical and logical functions. The set of arithmetic operations supported by a specific ALU may be restricted to addition and subtraction or may include functions of multiplication, division, trigonometries such as sine, cosine, etc., and square roots.

Central Processing Unit:

The ALU, control unit and registers and together called the CPU. It is sometimes called the computer's brain, and its job is to perform commands. We send instructions to the CPU whenever we press a key, click the mouse, or start an application.

Software refers to computer parts, such as programs, data, protocols, etc., that do not have a material form. In contrast to the physical hardware from which the system is built, the software is that portion of a computer system consisting of encoded information or computer instructions.

It is sometimes called "firmware" when the software is stored in hardware that can not be easily modified, such as with a BIOS ROM on an IBM PC compatible computer.

Computer hardware and software require each other, and neither of them can be realistically used on their own. There are four main components of a general-purpose computer: the arithmetic logic unit (ALU), the control unit, the memory, and the I/O (collectively called input and output) devices.

Uses of Computer

Computers are used in various fields, such as homes, businesses, government offices, research organizations, educational institutions, medicine, entertainment, etc. because of their features and powerful functions. They have taken sectors and companies to a whole new level.

Science-

Computers are best suited for the collection, analysis, categorization, and storage of data in science, research and engineering. They also help scientists to exchange data both internally and internationally with each other.

Government-

Computers in the government sector are used to perform various functions and improve their services. In most cases, data processing tasks, the maintenance of citizens' databases, and the promotion of a paperless environment are the primary purposes of using computers. In addition to this, computers play a key role in the country's defence system.

Health and Medicine-

They are used to preserve information, records, live patient monitoring, X-rays, and more from patients. Computers assist in setting up laboratory tools, monitoring heart rate and blood pressure, etc. Besides, computers allow physicians to easily exchange patient data with other medical specialists.

Education-

They help people get different educational materials (such as images, videos, e-books, etc.) in one place. Also, computers are best suited for online classes, online tutoring, online exams, and task and project creation. Also, they can be used to maintain and track student performance and other data.

Banking-

Most countries use online banking systems so that customers can access their data directly. People can verify the balance of their account, transfer cash, and pay online bills, including credit cards. Besides, banks use computers to execute transactions and store client information, transaction records, etc.

Short Computer Essay in English

A computer's a programmable device that accepts raw data(input) and processes it as output with a group of instructions (a program) to supply the result. It renders output after performing mathematical and logical operations and can save the output for future use. The word "computer" derives from the word "computare" in Latin, which means calculating.

Types of Computer

Computers are of different types based on different criteria. Based on their size, computers are of five types:

Micro Computers-

It is a single-user computer that has less capacity for speed and storage than the other types. For a CPU, it uses a microprocessor. Laptops, desktop computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), tablets, and smartphones are common examples of microcomputers. Microcomputers are generally designed and built for general use, such as browsing, information search, the internet, MS Office, social media, etc.

How to Use a Computer?

Assuming you would like a detailed section on how to use a computer for someone who has never used one before:

Computers are becoming increasingly commonplace in homes and workplaces around the world. They can be used for a wide variety of purposes, from checking email and browsing the internet to more complex tasks such as video editing and 3D modelling. If you’ve never used a computer before, or if you’re not sure how to do something specific, this guide will show you the basics of using a computer.

Using a computer is relatively simple once you know what you’re doing. The first thing you need to do is sit down in front of the monitor (the screen). In front of the monitor, there will be a keyboard and mouse. The keyboard is used for typing and the mouse is used for pointing and clicking. To turn on the computer, find the power button on the monitor or CPU (the large box that houses all of the computer’s components) and press it. Once the computer has booted up, you will see the desktop. This is where you can access all of your programs and files.

To open a program, simply double-click on its icon. For example, to open Microsoft Word, find its icon on the desktop (it may be in a folder called “Programs”) and double-click it. Once the program has opened, you can start using it. To close a program, click on the ‘X’ in the top -right corner of the window.

To open a file, find its icon on the desktop (or in any folder) and double-click it. Depending on the type of file, a program may open automatically to view or edit it. To close the file, click on the ‘X’ in the top-right corner of the window.

To navigate around your computer, use the mouse to point and click. For example, to go to a different folder or program, simply double-click on its icon. To select multiple items at once, hold down the ‘Ctrl’ key while clicking them with your mouse.

To save a file, click on ‘File’ in the top menu bar and then select ‘Save’. You will be asked where you want to save it – choose either your desktop or a specific folder that you have created. Once you have chosen where to save it, enter a name for your file and click ‘Save’. The next time you need to open that file, just go back to the same location and double-click on its icon.

These are just some basic tips for using a computer; there is much more that you can learn about computers as you become more comfortable with them. For more detailed information about specific tasks, use the help section of your computer or search online for tutorials.

There was a time when we had to do calculations and solve problems manually. Nowadays, a computer can do the same in a fraction of a second. Computers have now become a necessity in our lives. From learning about new things to making new friends, from students doing their school projects to multinational companies storing their employee data, these days everything is done on computers. Using computers has made work easier and faster.

However, computers do have some disadvantages. As computers are doing all the work, the need for human employees has reduced which has added to the problem of unemployment. Online hacking, fraud and cyber crimes have also increased. But if we take a few measures to keep ourselves safe, computers are indeed great!

Today, as the world is modernising, computers have become a necessity in our lives. Computers can process instructions and solve problems in just a fraction of a second. They can store a huge amount of data and thus, help banks, hospitals, government organisations as well as other companies to store all their data digitally which makes work a lot easier.

Computers also allow us to access the internet and connect with the world. Because of computers, we can now watch movies at home, order groceries, book cabs, buses, trains and flights, and send and receive money online. We can learn new things, make new friends and talk to different people using the internet.

However, computers do have some disadvantages. Because computers are so fast and versatile, the need for human employees has reduced which has led to the loss of jobs and added to the problem of unemployment. Online hacking, fraud and stealing of personal information have also become common as so much of our information is stored online.

A lot of people have also gotten addicted to playing games or binge-watching movies and shows on their computers. This is harmful to their health and can lead to physical issues in the long run. That’s why we must use computers in a way that is good for us and doesn’t cause us any harm.

Today, computers have become an important part of our lives. This machine has made many complicated tasks a lot easier and faster for people and organisations like banks, hospitals, post offices, government organisations as well as small and large companies.

Computers allow us to access the internet and connect with the world. Because of computers, we can now watch movies and dramas from all over the world while sitting at home. We can order groceries, and book cabs, buses, trains and flights online. We can also send and receive money via online banking without ever having to set foot in a bank.

Computers have also helped people learn new things which wouldn’t have been possible in an era when computers didn’t exist. One no longer needs to go to the library and search for books. Now, one can simply borrow a book from any online library as well as buy online copies of those books at a much cheaper price.

This has reduced the need for physical books and copies which in turn has reduced the need for paper production. Computers have also helped us connect with people from different parts of the world and make friends with them. It has helped us learn about different countries, cultures, and people and has helped us become more understanding and welcoming.

Computers have a lot of advantages but they do come with a few disadvantages as well. Because computers are so fast and versatile, the need for human employees has reduced which has led to the loss of jobs and added to the problem of unemployment. This problem is only going to escalate in the future as more and more advancements are made in the field of computer technology.

Online hacking, fraud and stealing of personal information have also become common as so much of our information is stored online. One wrong click and we can lose a lot of our hard-earned money. What’s worse is that such hackers and scammers target old and illiterate people who are not very familiar with the technology. Many youngsters today spend a lot of their time playing computer games or binge-watching shows full of negativity online. This affects their physical and mental health in the long run.

Nowadays, computers have become a necessity in our lives and we cannot deny that. And as is the case with everything else, computers do have their own advantages and disadvantages. We must be mindful and use computers in a way that is good for us and doesn’t cause us any harm.

I have adopted a simplistic approach to writing essays on the topic for a better understanding of all kinds of students. If you still have any doubts regarding this context, kindly let me know through the comment section below. Keep browsing our website for more such sessions.

250 Words Essay on History of Computer

Introduction.

The history of computers is a fascinating journey, tracing back several centuries. It illustrates human ingenuity and evolution from primitive calculators to complex computing systems.

Early Computers

The concept of computing dates back to antiquity. The abacus, developed in 2400 BC, is often considered the earliest computer. In the 19th century, Charles Babbage conceptualized and designed the first mechanical computer, the Analytical Engine, which used punch cards for instructions.

Birth of Modern Computers

The 20th century heralded the era of modern computing. The first programmable computer, the Z3, was built by Konrad Zuse in 1941. However, it was the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC), developed in 1946, that truly revolutionized computing with its electronic technology.

Personal Computers and the Internet

The 1970s and 1980s saw the advent of personal computers (PCs). The Apple II, introduced in 1977, and IBM’s PC, launched in 1981, brought computers to the masses. The 1990s marked the birth of the internet, transforming computers into communication devices and information gateways.

Present and Future

Today, computers have become an integral part of our lives, from smartphones to supercomputers. They are now moving towards quantum computing, promising unprecedented computational power.

In summary, the history of computers is a testament to human innovation, evolving from simple counting devices to powerful tools that shape our lives. As we look forward to the future, the potential for further advancements in computing technology is limitless.

500 Words Essay on History of Computer

The dawn of computing.

The history of computers dates back to antiquity with devices like the abacus, used for calculations. However, the concept of a programmable computer was first realized in the 19th century by Charles Babbage, an English mathematician. His design, known as the Analytical Engine, is considered the first general-purpose computer, although it was never built.

The first half of the 20th century saw the development of electro-mechanical computers. The most notable was the Mark I, developed by Howard Aiken at Harvard University in 1944. It was the first machine to automatically execute long computations.

During the same period, the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was developed by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert at the University of Pennsylvania. Completed in 1945, it was the first general-purpose electronic computer. However, it was not programmable in the modern sense.

The Era of Transistors

The late 1940s marked the invention of the transistor, which revolutionized the computer industry. Transistors were faster, smaller, and more reliable than their vacuum tube counterparts. The first transistorized computer was built at the University of Manchester in 1953.

The 1950s and 1960s saw the development of mainframe computers, like IBM’s 700 series, which dominated the computing world for the next two decades. These machines were large and expensive, but they allowed multiple users to access the computer simultaneously through terminals.

Microprocessors and Personal Computers

The invention of the microprocessor in the 1970s marked the beginning of the personal computer era. The Intel 4004, released in 1971, was the first commercially available microprocessor. This development led to the creation of small, relatively inexpensive machines like the Apple II and the IBM PC, which made computing accessible to individuals and small businesses.

The Internet and Beyond

The 1980s and 1990s brought about the rise of the internet and the World Wide Web, expanding the use of computers into every aspect of modern life. The advent of graphical user interfaces, such as Microsoft’s Windows and Apple’s Mac OS, made computers even more user-friendly.

Today, computers have become ubiquitous in our society. They are embedded in everything from our phones to our cars, and they play a critical role in fields ranging from science to entertainment. The history of computers is a story of continuous innovation and progress, and it is clear that this trend will continue into the foreseeable future.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

I have grown up on a farm, but even in our rural area, I can see ways that technology is being integrated into all areas of life. Computers play a vital role in society, affecting us as much as TV, cars, and electricity. Computers are an important tool because they help us communicate more easily, increase our efficiency, and add convenience to our hectic lives.

To begin, computers have vastly improved daily communication. E-mail has revolutionized the way many people stay in touch. For example, by using e-mail I was able to send a photograph of me, playing football, to my grandmother living away from me. She was thrilled, and that evening she sent me an electronic greeting card with an interactive football game! Also, I can communicate instantly with other friends who are online. Also, my parents don’t get mad at me for tying up the phone to talk with my friends. On the computer, if you can type, you can chat.

Working on a computer helps me create professional-looking reports and letters. I am not a very neat person, so I depend on word processing to help make my work look neat. I can tell that my teachers like it when they don’t have to read my sloppy handwriting. Besides, writing a long essay or a report by hand is extremely tiring. Computers have been a real lifesaver in that department.

Another wonderful thing about computers is that they can help you get and stay organized. Many kids, adults, and organizations store a lot of information on the computer. I know that my parents keep their tax records on it. When tax time comes along, instead of having to sort through boxes of junk, they have everything they need at their fingertips because they stored it on the computer.

Finally, shopping on the Internet is another great benefit of having a computer. I’ve bought books, music CDs, and gifts on the Internet. It’s so much better than dragging myself around from store to store, lugging shopping bags, and waiting in long lines. Of course, my parents keep an eye on what I buy and how much it costs. They don’t let me shop on the Internet that much, but I love to do it when I can.

I think that computers are marvellous machines and that what they can do is only going to increase. I’ve described here only a few of the ways that computers make a huge difference to me, my family, and my friends right now. Just think about all the other ways computers help people and organizations around the world and about the other benefits they’ll bring in the future!

Putting a computer inside someone’s brain used to feel like the edge of science fiction. Today, it’s a reality . Academic and commercial groups are testing “brain-computer interface” devices to enable people with disabilities to function more independently. Yet Elon Musk’s company, Neuralink, has put this technology front and center in debates about safety, ethics and neuroscience.

In January 2024, Musk announced that Neuralink implanted its first chip in a human subject’s brain. The Conversation reached out to two scholars at the University of Washington School of Medicine – Nancy Jecker, a bioethicst , and Andrew Ko, a neurosurgeon who implants brain chip devices – for their thoughts on the ethics of this new horizon in neuroscience.

How does a brain chip work?

Neuralink’s coin-size device, called N1, is designed to enable patients to carry out actions just by concentrating on them, without moving their bodies.

Subjects in the company’s PRIME study – short for Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface – undergo surgery to place the device in a part of the brain that controls movement. The chip records and processes the brain’s electrical activity, then transmits this data to an external device, such as a phone or computer.

The external device “decodes” the patient’s brain activity, learning to associate certain patterns with the patient’s goal: moving a computer cursor up a screen, for example. Over time, the software can recognize a pattern of neural firing that consistently occurs while the participant is imagining that task, and then execute the task for the person.

Neuralink’s current trial is focused on helping people with paralyzed limbs control computers or smartphones . Brain-computer interfaces, commonly called BCIs, can also be used to control devices such as wheelchairs .

A few companies are testing BCIs. What’s different about Neuralink?

Noninvasive devices positioned on the outside of a person’s head have been used in clinical trials for a long time , but they have not received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for commercial development.

A young woman in a green shirt sits with a wired contraption on her head as four other people look on.

There are other brain-computer devices, like Neuralink’s, that are fully implanted and wireless . However, the N1 implant combines more technologies in a single device: It can target individual neurons, record from thousands of sites in the brain and recharge its small battery wirelessly. These are important advances that could produce better outcomes.

Why is Neuralink drawing criticism?

Neuralink received FDA approval for human trials in May 2023. Musk announced the company’s first human trial on his social media platform, X – formerly Twitter – in January 2024.

Information about the implant, however, is scarce , aside from a brochure aimed at recruiting trial subjects. Neuralink did not register at ClinicalTrials.gov , as is customary, and required by some academic journals .

Some scientists are troubled by this lack of transparency . Sharing information about clinical trials is important because it helps other investigators learn about areas related to their research and can improve patient care. Academic journals can also be biased toward positive results , preventing researchers from learning from unsuccessful experiments.

Fellows at the Hastings Center, a bioethics think tank, have warned that Musk’s brand of “ science by press release, while increasingly common, is not science .” They advise against relying on someone with a huge financial stake in a research outcome to function as the sole source of information.

When scientific research is funded by government agencies or philanthropic groups , its aim is to promote the public good. Neuralink, on the other hand, embodies a private equity model , which is becoming more common in science . Firms pooling funds from private investors to back science breakthroughs may strive to do good, but they also strive to maximize profits, which can conflict with patients’ best interests .

A phone screen shows a white page that says 'Elon Musk,' positioned below an abstract black design and the word 'NEURALINK.'

In 2022, the U.S. Department of Agriculture investigated animal cruelty at Neuralink, according to a Reuters report, after employees accused the company of rushing tests and botching procedures on test animals in a race for results. The agency’s inspection found no breaches, according to a letter from the USDA secretary to lawmakers, which Reuters reviewed. However, the secretary did note an “adverse surgical event” in 2019 that Neuralink had self-reported.

In a separate incident also reported by Reuters, the Department of Transportation fined Neuralink for violating rules about transporting hazardous materials, including a flammable liquid.

What other ethical issues does Neuralink’s trial raise?

When brain-computer interfaces are used to help patients who suffer from disabling conditions function more independently, such as by helping them communicate or move about, this can profoundly improve their quality of life. In particular, it helps people recover a sense of their own agency or autonomy – one of the key tenets of medical ethics.

However well-intentioned, medical interventions can produce unintended consequences. With BCIs, scientists and ethicists are particularly concerned about the potential for identity theft, password hacking and blackmail . Given how the devices access users’ thoughts, there is also the possibility that their autonomy could be manipulated by third parties.

The ethics of medicine requires physicians to help patients, while minimizing potential harm. In addition to errors and privacy risks, scientists worry about potential adverse effects of a completely implanted device like Neuralink, since device components are not easily replaced after implantation.

When considering any invasive medical intervention, patients, providers and developers seek a balance between risk and benefit. At current levels of safety and reliability, the benefit of a permanent implant would have to be large to justify the uncertain risks.

What’s next?

For now, Neuralink’s trials are focused on patients with paralysis. Musk has said his ultimate goal for BCIs, however, is to help humanity – including healthy people – “ keep pace” with artificial intelligence .

This raises questions about another core tenet of medical ethics: justice . Some types of supercharged brain-computer synthesis could exacerbate social inequalities if only wealthy citizens have access to enhancements.

What is more immediately concerning, however, is the possibility that the device could be increasingly shown to be helpful for people with disabilities, but become unavailable due to loss of research funding. For patients whose access to a device is tied to a research study, the prospect of losing access after the study ends can be devastating. This raises thorny questions about whether it is ever ethical to provide early access to breakthrough medical interventions prior to their receiving full FDA approval.

Clear ethical and legal guidelines are needed to ensure the benefits that stem from scientific innovations like Neuralink’s brain chip are balanced against patient safety and societal good.

How are computers scoring STAAR essays? Texas superintendents, lawmaker want answers

Texas superintendents — and at least one lawmaker — want answers from the state education commissioner about how computers are scoring STAAR essays.

The Texas Education Agency quietly debuted a new system for examining student answers on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, in December . Roughly three-quarters of written responses are scored by a computer rather than a person.

“This is surprising news to me as a member of the House Public Education Committee, as I do not recall ever receiving notice of this novel and experimental method for grading high-stakes, STAAR tests,” Rep. Gina Hinojosa, D-Austin, wrote in a recent letter to Commissioner Mike Morath, which was also shared with The Dallas Morning News .

Superintendents across the state also were caught off guard until recently. Many school districts already are suing the state over changes to the academic accountability system that’s largely based on STAAR performance.

Related: Computers scoring Texas students’ STAAR essay answers, state officials say

The News reported on the rollout of computer scoring Wednesday.

The use of computers to score essays “was never communicated to school districts; yet this seems to be an unprecedented change that a ‘heads up’ would be reasonably warranted,” HD Chambers, director of the Texas School Alliance, wrote to Morath in a letter shared with The News .

TEA spokesman Jake Kobersky said in a statement that the agency is developing a comprehensive presentation for educators, explaining the changes in detail and addressing outstanding questions.

He added that the agency alerted the House Public Education Committee in August 2022 that it was pursuing automated scoring.

The final bulletpoint on an 18-page slideshow read: “TEA is pursuing automation for scoring where appropriate to reduce costs while ensuring reliability. Full human scoring is not possible under item-level computer-adaptive (B), and full human scoring with no automation under the current system would require at least $15-20M more per year.”

The new scoring method rolled out amid a broader STAAR redesign. The revamped test — which launched last year — has a cap on multiple choice questions and essays at every grade level. State officials say it would cost millions more to have only humans score the test.

The “automated scoring engines” are programmed to emulate how humans would assess an essay, and they don’t learn beyond a single question. The computer determines how to score written answers after analyzing thousands of students’ responses that were previously scored by people.

Among the district leaders’ biggest concerns is a huge spike in low scores among high schoolers under the new system.

Roughly eight in 10 written responses on the most recent English II End of Course exam received zero points this fall.

For the spring test — the first iteration of the redesigned test, but scored only by humans — roughly a quarter of responses scored zero points in the same subject.

Members of the Texas School Alliance , which represents 46 districts, “examined their individual district results and found shockingly consistent scoring differences.”

Chris Rozunick, the director of the state’s assessment development division, previously told The News that she understands why people connect the spike in zeroes to the rollout of automated scoring based on the timing. But she insists that the two are unrelated.

Many students who take STAAR in the fall are “re-testers” who did not meet grade level on a previous test attempt. Spring testers tend to perform better, according to agency officials who were asked to explain the spike in low scores in the fall.

“It really is the population of testers much more than anything else,” Rozunick said.

Kobersky added that, under the previous STAAR design, a score of zero was reserved for “unscorable responses,” meaning the question was left blank or written in a nonsensical way. The redesigned test rubric allows for a zero both if a response is unscorable or if it’s the value of the response as determined by the scorer, he said.

Some district leaders requested the state education agency provide them images of students’ responses so that they could “better understand what led to the significant increase in the number of zeroes, and most importantly how to help students write their responses” to receive better scores.

“Each request has been denied,” Chambers wrote in his letter to Morath.

Kobersky said fall questions are not released because they can be reused for other tests.

TEA officials say a technical report, with a detailed overview of the system, will be available later this year.

STAAR scores are of tremendous importance to district leaders, families and communities. Schools are graded on the state’s academic accountability system largely based on how students perform on these standardized tests.

Related: What are Texas’ A-F school grades, and why do they matter?

“As with all aspects of the STAAR test and the A-F accountability system, it is important that there is transparency, accuracy and fairness in these high-stakes results,” Hinojosa wrote.

How RAG makes generative AI tools even better

Retrieval augmented generation, or 'rag' for short, creates a more customized and accurate generative ai model that can greatly reduce anomalies such as hallucinations..

Senior Reporter, Computerworld |

shutterstock 2371510217

As more organizations turn to generative artificial intelligence (genAI) tools to transform massive amounts of unstructured data and other assets into usable information, being able to find the most relevant content during the AI generation process is critical.

Retrieval augmented generation or “RAG” for short, is a technology that can do just that by creating a more customized genAI model that enables more accurate and specific responses to queries.

Large language models (LLMs), also called deep-learning models, are the basis of genAI technology; they’re pre-trained on vast amounts of unlabeled or unstructured data that, by the time a model is available for use, can be outdated and not specific to a task.

LLMs can consist of a neural network with billions or even a trillion or more parameters. RAG optimizes the output of an LLM by referencing (accessing) an external knowledge base outside of the information on which it was trained. In other words, RAG enables genAI to find and use relevant external information, often from an organization’s proprietary data sources or other content to which it’s directed.

It not only amplifies an LLM’s knowledge base “but also significantly improves the accuracy and contextuality of its outputs,” Microsoft explained in a blog .

RAG is essentially a design pattern that uses search functionality to retrieve pertinent  data and add it to the prompt of a genAI model to better ground the generative output with factual and new information.

“RAG can be used for both retrieving public internet data as well as for retrieving data from private knowledge bases,” according to Gartner Research.

Patrick Lewis, a natural language processing research scientist with start-up Cohere , originally coined the term RAG in a paper published in 2020. Lewis pointed out that LLMs cannot easily expand or revise their memory, and they can’t straightforwardly provide insight into their predictions, leading to “hallucinations.”

Just last week, Slack unveiled AI-based tools for businesses and cited RAG as one way the company hopes to reduce halluciations in genAI results.

In addition to Cohere, more than a half dozen vendors  provide native or stand-alone solutions for developers to build RAG-based applications for an LLM. They include Vectara , OpenAI , Microsoft Azure Search , Google Vertex AI , LangChain ,  LlamaIndex and Databricks .

“More and more the solutions around RAG — and enabling people to use that more effectively — are going to focus on tying into the right data that has business value as opposed to just the raw productivity improvements,” said Rick Villars, IDC group vice president of worldwide research.

With RAG, organizations can maximize the chances of producing accurate results based on factual inputs, said Avivah Litan, distinguished vice president analyst at Gartner. It also minimizes the chances of hallucinations, since outputs are grounded with retrieved data.

RAG also allows workers to find, summarize, and utilize the information they're looking for faster by using the power of third-party LLMs applied to an organization’s own data. It also helps protect the organization from liability incurred when copyrighted or other IP protected materials get incorporated into LLM responses.

“This possibility is greatly reduced, because the prompt responses can be grounded in enterprise data,” Litan said.

One way to get better access to business information using RAG is with a vector database and graph technologies that can tap into proprietary data and allow an organization to truly dig into the business value, Villars said.

A vector database stores, indexes, and manage massive quantities of high-dimensional vector data efficiently; as a result, companies are spending money to develop them or add vector search capabilities to their existing SQL or NoSQL databases and genAI use cases and applications.

By 2026, more than 30% of enterprises are expected to adopt vector databases to ground their foundation models with relevant business data, according to Gartner Research. Gartner lists vector databases as “critical enabler” enterprise technology for 2024.

Popular uses for vector databases include product recommendations, similarity search, fraud detection and generative-AI-powered, question-and-answer applications, according to Gartner.

Vector databases can and often do serve as the backbone of RAG systems . The databases store and manage data typically derived from text, images, or sounds, which are converted into mathematical vectors.

“ The other part of that is back to app modernization, ” Villars said. “One of the biggest legacy install bases companies have today are old client-server apps and even early mobile and cloud apps built on Java. We have to modernize those to make them part of this AI story.”

Title: neural network diffusion.

Abstract: Diffusion models have achieved remarkable success in image and video generation. In this work, we demonstrate that diffusion models can also \textit{generate high-performing neural network parameters}. Our approach is simple, utilizing an autoencoder and a standard latent diffusion model. The autoencoder extracts latent representations of a subset of the trained network parameters. A diffusion model is then trained to synthesize these latent parameter representations from random noise. It then generates new representations that are passed through the autoencoder's decoder, whose outputs are ready to use as new subsets of network parameters. Across various architectures and datasets, our diffusion process consistently generates models of comparable or improved performance over trained networks, with minimal additional cost. Notably, we empirically find that the generated models perform differently with the trained networks. Our results encourage more exploration on the versatile use of diffusion models.
