essay on health

Similarly, maintaining good health is dependent on a lot of factors. It ranges from the air you breathe to the type of people you choose to spend your time with. Health has a lot of components that carry equal importance. If even one of them is missing, a person cannot be completely healthy.

Constituents of Good Health

First, we have our physical health. This means being fit physically and in the absence of any kind of disease or illness . When you have good physical health, you will have a longer life span. One may maintain their physical health by having a balanced diet . Do not miss out on the essential nutrients; take each of them in appropriate quantities.

Secondly, you must exercise daily. It may be for ten minutes only but never miss it. It will help your body maintain physical fitness. Moreover, do not consume junk food all the time. Do not smoke or drink as it has serious harmful consequences. Lastly, try to take adequate sleep regularly instead of using your phone.

Next, we talk about our mental health . Mental health refers to the psychological and emotional well-being of a person. The mental health of a person impacts their feelings and way of handling situations. We must maintain our mental health by being positive and meditating.

Subsequently, social health and cognitive health are equally important for the overall well-being of a person. A person can maintain their social health when they effectively communicate well with others. Moreover, when a person us friendly and attends social gatherings, he will definitely have good social health. Similarly, our cognitive health refers to performing mental processes effectively. To do that well, one must always eat healthily and play brain games like Chess, puzzles and more to sharpen the brain.

Physical Health Alone is Not Everything

There is this stigma that surrounds mental health. People do not take mental illnesses seriously. To be completely fit, one must also be mentally fit. When people completely discredit mental illnesses, it creates a negative impact.

For instance, you never tell a person with cancer to get over it and that it’s all in their head in comparison to someone dealing with depression . Similarly, we should treat mental health the same as physical health.

Parents always take care of their children’s physical needs. They feed them with nutritious foods and always dress up their wounds immediately. However, they fail to notice the deteriorating mental health of their child. Mostly so, because they do not give it that much importance. It is due to a lack of awareness amongst people. Even amongst adults, you never know what a person is going through mentally.

Thus, we need to be able to recognize the signs of mental illnesses . A laughing person does not equal a happy person. We must not consider mental illnesses as a taboo and give it the attention it deserves to save people’s lives.

Health and Fitness Essay

The term "health" refers to a condition of complete well-being, not just physically but also mentally and socially. Fitness and good health are interrelated. In order to keep our health in check, we must focus on staying fit. Here are a few sample essays on ‘health and fitness’.

100 Words Essay on Health and Fitness

Fitness and health are intertwined, and neither can be attained without consideration for the other. In order to work properly and live productively, one must maintain good health.

Fitness is essential because it improves our ability to work without difficulty and increases our resistance to germs that cause illness. Maintaining our fitness not only improves our ability to work but also contributes to our happiness and contentment. Diet has a significant impact on our health . We need to consume a balanced diet and adequate amounts of water. By maintaining good health, we can better withstand illnesses like the common cold, viral fever, and other similar conditions. Running, dancing, and jogging are all effective forms of exercise.

Health and Fitness Essay

It's crucial to have a supportive environment that fosters our development into fully realised adults. So, we should never neglect our health and make every effort to stay fit.

200 Words Essay on Health and Fitness

The majority of regular people never comprehend the significance of maintaining fitness and good health. They frequently underestimate the value of good health because they are unaware of its benefits. We all understand that good health is wealth, but few people actually live this out. We can perform our daily tasks more easily when we are healthy and fit. A disease-free body is only one aspect of health; mental calmness is another.

A person cannot have an unhealthy body if they have an unhealthy mind. Being in good physical and mental health enables us to succeed in life and fully enjoy it. We feel more physically and mentally strong and confident when our bodies and minds are both in good health. A strong physical condition aids us in difficult times, whereas a weak physical condition makes us more frail and susceptible to illness.

We must be knowledgeable about every aspect of maintaining our physical and mental health. Even though they are very conscious of how to keep their bodies neat, clean, and healthy, some people harbour mental tensions that prevent them from ever becoming physically fit. The healthy state of the body gradually deteriorates and becomes weak due to mental stress. People who take care of their health and fitness regularly exercise and eat wholesome foods at the appropriate times. They are very concerned about their health and refrain from being lazy, consuming unhealthy foods, and living sedentary lifestyles.

500 Words Essay on Health and Fitness

If we want to live happy lives, we must take care of our health and fitness. There are many benefits to keeping fit. We must first comprehend the causes of the need for fitness before focusing on how to be fit. In general, we now eat out more frequently because of how our way of life has changed. Although home-cooked meals are healthier, because of the places we must travel to for work, we cannot always rely on them.

We must take good care of ourselves by engaging in regular exercise to make up for our lack of a healthy diet. However, exercising does not require us to forgo our favourite foods or spend the entirety of the day in the gym. Most people choose the incorrect diet when trying to lose weight and stay in shape. Diets, such as those that involve eating cabbage soup or onions, are harmful and do more harm than good. People frequently skip meals because they believe that eating less will aid in weight loss.

But experts have emphasised the significance of eating properly time and time again. Skipping meals causes a slow metabolism, which causes additional weight gain. Insufficient calorie intake causes our bodies to start storing any extra calories as fat. Food is not converted into energy as a result, and we become lethargic and frail. Our ability to function properly depends on when we eat.

Dietitians advise us to spread out our food consumption into smaller meals. This aids in the efficient digestion and absorption of food. In addition to plenty of water, we should consume enough green, leafy vegetables. Water controls internal bodily functions and promotes smooth operation. To maintain your fitness, start by eating a balanced diet. All of the essential nutrients—carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, roughage, and water—should be included in our diet.

A balanced diet keeps us healthy and fortifies our immunity, which wards off disease. Our physical and mental well-being must both be maintained. Because of our hectic schedules, many people do not find the time to exercise. We must therefore devise alternative application techniques. Some ways to stay in shape include walking a certain distance, taking the stairs rather than the elevator, and following a regular sleep schedule. For a healthy and successful life, sleep is essential. Every day, an average of eight hours of sleep is required for every person.

Contrary to popular belief, staying fit also means making the most of our potential. Maintaining emotional fitness is just as important as maintaining physical fitness. Indicators of mental health include lower stress levels and appropriate emotional venting. People who are unable to communicate their feelings experience mental instability and suppressed depression. A breakdown or a panic attack, both of which are harmful to our health, may result from these circumstances.

Therefore, maintaining a healthy lifestyle requires fitness. A healthy individual will be less prone to illness and perform tasks more effectively. This is why it's important to give our health top priority.

Incorporating Fitness and Health

I practise the following to incorporate the idea of health and fitness into my life:

I work out for an hour each day.

I try to maintain a healthy diet.

I try to stay away from foods that are high in sugar and fat.

I go for 20 to 30 minutes of daily walking.

Essay on Health and Fitness 500+ Words

Health and fitness are like the keys to a happy and fulfilling life. They help us grow stronger, stay energetic, and enjoy every moment to the fullest. In this essay, we will explore the significance of health and fitness and how they can positively impact our lives.

Physical Health

One of the most crucial aspects of health and fitness is physical well-being. Our bodies are like machines that require regular maintenance. Exercise is the key to keeping our bodies in good shape. According to the World Health Organization, physical inactivity is a leading cause of many health problems, including heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. Regular physical activity, such as playing sports or going for a walk, can significantly reduce the risk of these issues.

Mental Health

Health and fitness aren’t just about the body; they also play a vital role in our mental well-being. Physical activity releases chemicals in the brain called endorphins, which are often referred to as “feel-good” hormones. These endorphins can help reduce stress, anxiety, and feelings of depression. Studies have shown that people who exercise regularly tend to have better mental health and higher self-esteem.

Healthy Eating Habits

Eating well is another essential aspect of health and fitness. Our bodies need a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to function properly. According to nutrition experts, a healthy diet can lower the risk of chronic diseases and boost our immune system. It’s like giving our bodies the right fuel to perform at their best.

Want to live a long and healthy life? Health and fitness are your best allies. Studies have shown that people who prioritize their health and fitness tend to live longer and have a better quality of life in their later years. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can help prevent age-related diseases and keep us active and independent as we grow older.

Increased Energy Levels

Feeling tired all the time can be a real downer. Health and fitness can help boost your energy levels. When you exercise regularly, your body becomes more efficient at using oxygen and nutrients, which can make you feel more energetic throughout the day. So, if you want to be more alert and active, incorporating physical activity into your routine is the way to go.

Improved Sleep

A good night’s sleep is essential for overall health and well-being. Health and fitness can positively impact your sleep quality. Studies have shown that people who exercise regularly tend to fall asleep faster and enjoy deeper, more restorative sleep. Improved sleep can enhance your mood, concentration, and overall quality of life.

Social Benefits

Being healthy and fit can also enhance your social life. Participating in sports and fitness activities can provide opportunities to meet new people and build strong friendships. Team sports, for example, teach important values like teamwork, communication, and cooperation. These skills are not only essential for sports but also for life in general.

Conclusion of Essay on Health and Fitness

In conclusion, health and fitness are essential components of a happy and fulfilling life. They contribute to physical well-being, mental health, longevity, increased energy levels, and improved sleep. By adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise and a balanced diet, you can unlock the full potential of your body and mind.

Remember that your health is a valuable asset, and it’s never too early to start taking care of it. As a fifth-grader, you have a fantastic opportunity to develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime. So, make exercise and healthy eating a part of your daily routine, and you’ll be on the path to a healthier, happier future. Your body and mind will thank you, and you’ll be ready to face whatever challenges and adventures life brings your way.

Importance of Working Towards Good Health

Health is God’s gift to us. Health refers to the physical and mental state of a human being. To stay healthy is not an option but a necessity to live a happy life. The basic laws of good health are related to the food we eat, the amount of physical exercise we do, our cleanliness, rest, and relaxation. A healthy person is normally more confident, self-assured, sociable, and energetic. A healthy person views things calmly, and without prejudice.

Introduction

“The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered "Man! Because he sacrifices his health to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.” This signifies that individuals don’t prioritise their mental health to earn money. Some even work 24 hours a day or seven days a week.

However, you have the option to remain balanced. So, balance work and fitness daily. Always strive to keep a cheerful as well as a concentrated routine. It is necessary to plan ahead of time. In any case, one must maintain a good mental, bodily, and emotional state, and no professional or counsellor can assist you unless you desire to live. The will to live in the moment and make the most of it awakens the ideal strength within you, and you are the only one who can never let yourself fall apart.

Importance of Maintaining Health

We live in a super-fast age. The Internet has shrunk the world dramatically and people are connected 24x7. Multitasking is the order of the day, as we struggle to fulfill our responsibilities for everyone in life. In this fight, we often forget to spare time for ourselves. The stress levels continue to build up until one day a major collapse may make us realize that in all this hectic activity, we have forgotten to take care of one important thing – our health.

As we spend days shuttling between hospital and home, putting our body through one test after another, trying to find out what has gone wrong, we are forced to remember that ‘Health is indeed Wealth’.

In earlier days, life was very simple. People worked for a stipulated time, often walked everywhere, ate more homemade food, did household chores, and enjoyed a healthy balance in life.

Now people have cars and bikes to commute, so they walk less. With the demand for more working hours, people are awake till late at night and indulge in more junk food than home-cooked food. Modern equipment at home has reduced the labour work and increased dependency on this equipment.  People don’t have enough time to exercise or even get enough sunlight. Nowadays people are living very unhealthy lifestyles.

Unhealthy living conditions have increased the contraction of people to various diseases like obesity, diabetes, heart attacks, hypertension, etc. This has alarming implications in the near future. So it is very important to focus on our health as much as we focus on our work. Moderation in food habits, daily exercise, and balanced work-life can surely make a big difference to our health and body. When a person stays mentally and physically fit, his actions and decisions are more practical and logical and hence he is more successful in life. Furthermore, good health has a direct impact on our personality.

It's crucial to consider how much self-control you have to keep a healthy lifestyle. Research reveals that changing one's behaviour and daily patterns are quite tough. According to the data, whether a person has a habit of smoking, drinking alcohol, doing drugs, or any other substance, it is extremely difficult to quit. A study found that 80% of smokers who tried to quit failed, with only 46% succeeding.

Importance of Good Health

A healthy body has all the major components that help in the proper functioning of the body. The essential component is the state of physical health. Your life term extends when you maintain good physical fitness. If you are committed to exercising with a sensible diet, then you can develop a sense of well-being and can even prevent yourself from chronic illness, disability, and premature death.

Some of the benefits of increased physical activity are as follows.

It Improves Our Health

1. It increases the efficiency of the heart and lungs.

2. A good walk can reduce cholesterol levels.

3. Good exercise increases muscle strength.

4. It reduces blood pressure.

5. It reduces the risk of major illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease.

Improved Sense of Well-being

1. It helps in developing more energy.

2. It reduces stress levels.

3. Quality of sleep improves.

4. It helps in developing the ability to cope with stress.

5. It increases mental sharpness.

Improved Appearances

1. Weight loss contributes to a good physique.

2. Toned muscles generate more energy.

3. Improved posture enhances our appearance.

Enhanced Social Life

1. It improves self-image

2. It increases opportunities to make new friends.

3. It increases opportunities to share an activity with friends or family members.

Increased Stamina

1. Increased productivity.

2. Increased physical capabilities.

3. Less frequent injuries.

4. Improved immunity to minor illnesses.

Along with physical fitness, a good mental state is also essential for good health. Mental health means the emotional and psychological state of an individual. The best way to maintain good mental health is by staying positive and meditating.

However, unlike a machine, the body needs rest at regular intervals. A minimum of six to seven hours of sleep is necessary for the body to function optimally. Drinking plenty of water and a balanced diet is also very important for your body.  If you violate the basic laws of good health, like working late hours, ignoring physical exercise, eating junk food, it will lead to various ailments like hypertension, heart attacks, and other deadly diseases.

What is National Health Day?

Every year on April 7th, World Health Day is celebrated. The World Health Organization (WHO) hosted the inaugural World Health Day on April 7, 1950, to draw the entire world’s attention to global health.

Every year, the World Health Organization (WHO) comes up with a new theme for public awareness, such as "Support Nurses and Midwives" in 2020. This supports the situation of COVID-19, where healthcare workers are saving lives day and night without worrying about their health.

The WHO also operates a global health promotion initiative to align equality so that individuals can take control of their lives, "every life matters," and consider their fitness. The government promotes numerous health policies, including food security, workplace quality, and health literacy, in schools, colleges, workplaces, and various community activities.

Good Health for Children

Children need to maintain good physical and mental health. With an increase in the pressure of studies and over-indulgence in modern gadgets, children are losing the most precious thing, which is health. These days, they barely play in the playgrounds, they are more inclined towards junk food and spend more time on the screen. These unhealthy activities are slowly sabotaging their health. Parents should concentrate on the physical and mental health of their children, and inculcate good habits for maintaining a healthy lifestyle from a tender age.

Cleanliness also has a major role to play in maintaining good health. Taking a bath every day, washing hands before eating meals, brushing twice a day, changing clothes regularly, etc. are important habits to maintain good health.

Society is witnessing gloomy faces as a result of children and their parents' excessive usage of a computer, mobile phone, and the Internet. They are constantly using these technological items, oblivious to the fact that they may harm their health. Teenagers are frequently discovered engrossed in their electronic devices, resulting in mishaps.

The usage of electronic devices frequently results in anxiety and hostility. Excessive usage of these products has been linked to cancer, vision loss, weight gain, and insomnia.

Emotional development is another crucial component that should not be disregarded because it determines whether or not a person is healthy. An emotionally healthy person should have a solid sense of logic, realisation, and a realistic outlook.

Conclusion

Health is Wealth because if we are not healthy then all our wealth, fame and power can bring no enjoyment. Keeping fit and healthy is indeed not an option but a necessity.

13.1 Formatting a Research Paper

Learning objectives.

  • Identify the major components of a research paper written using American Psychological Association (APA) style.
  • Apply general APA style and formatting conventions in a research paper.

In this chapter, you will learn how to use APA style , the documentation and formatting style followed by the American Psychological Association, as well as MLA style , from the Modern Language Association. There are a few major formatting styles used in academic texts, including AMA, Chicago, and Turabian:

  • AMA (American Medical Association) for medicine, health, and biological sciences
  • APA (American Psychological Association) for education, psychology, and the social sciences
  • Chicago—a common style used in everyday publications like magazines, newspapers, and books
  • MLA (Modern Language Association) for English, literature, arts, and humanities
  • Turabian—another common style designed for its universal application across all subjects and disciplines

While all the formatting and citation styles have their own use and applications, in this chapter we focus our attention on the two styles you are most likely to use in your academic studies: APA and MLA.

If you find that the rules of proper source documentation are difficult to keep straight, you are not alone. Writing a good research paper is, in and of itself, a major intellectual challenge. Having to follow detailed citation and formatting guidelines as well may seem like just one more task to add to an already-too-long list of requirements.

Following these guidelines, however, serves several important purposes. First, it signals to your readers that your paper should be taken seriously as a student’s contribution to a given academic or professional field; it is the literary equivalent of wearing a tailored suit to a job interview. Second, it shows that you respect other people’s work enough to give them proper credit for it. Finally, it helps your reader find additional materials if he or she wishes to learn more about your topic.

Furthermore, producing a letter-perfect APA-style paper need not be burdensome. Yes, it requires careful attention to detail. However, you can simplify the process if you keep these broad guidelines in mind:

  • Work ahead whenever you can. Chapter 11 “Writing from Research: What Will I Learn?” includes tips for keeping track of your sources early in the research process, which will save time later on.
  • Get it right the first time. Apply APA guidelines as you write, so you will not have much to correct during the editing stage. Again, putting in a little extra time early on can save time later.
  • Use the resources available to you. In addition to the guidelines provided in this chapter, you may wish to consult the APA website at http://www.apa.org or the Purdue University Online Writing lab at http://owl.english.purdue.edu , which regularly updates its online style guidelines.

General Formatting Guidelines

This chapter provides detailed guidelines for using the citation and formatting conventions developed by the American Psychological Association, or APA. Writers in disciplines as diverse as astrophysics, biology, psychology, and education follow APA style. The major components of a paper written in APA style are listed in the following box.

These are the major components of an APA-style paper:

Body, which includes the following:

  • Headings and, if necessary, subheadings to organize the content
  • In-text citations of research sources
  • References page

All these components must be saved in one document, not as separate documents.

The title page of your paper includes the following information:

  • Title of the paper
  • Author’s name
  • Name of the institution with which the author is affiliated
  • Header at the top of the page with the paper title (in capital letters) and the page number (If the title is lengthy, you may use a shortened form of it in the header.)

List the first three elements in the order given in the previous list, centered about one third of the way down from the top of the page. Use the headers and footers tool of your word-processing program to add the header, with the title text at the left and the page number in the upper-right corner. Your title page should look like the following example.

Beyond the Hype: Evaluating Low-Carb Diets cover page

The next page of your paper provides an abstract , or brief summary of your findings. An abstract does not need to be provided in every paper, but an abstract should be used in papers that include a hypothesis. A good abstract is concise—about one hundred fifty to two hundred fifty words—and is written in an objective, impersonal style. Your writing voice will not be as apparent here as in the body of your paper. When writing the abstract, take a just-the-facts approach, and summarize your research question and your findings in a few sentences.

In Chapter 12 “Writing a Research Paper” , you read a paper written by a student named Jorge, who researched the effectiveness of low-carbohydrate diets. Read Jorge’s abstract. Note how it sums up the major ideas in his paper without going into excessive detail.

Beyond the Hype: Abstract

Write an abstract summarizing your paper. Briefly introduce the topic, state your findings, and sum up what conclusions you can draw from your research. Use the word count feature of your word-processing program to make sure your abstract does not exceed one hundred fifty words.

Depending on your field of study, you may sometimes write research papers that present extensive primary research, such as your own experiment or survey. In your abstract, summarize your research question and your findings, and briefly indicate how your study relates to prior research in the field.

Margins, Pagination, and Headings

APA style requirements also address specific formatting concerns, such as margins, pagination, and heading styles, within the body of the paper. Review the following APA guidelines.

Use these general guidelines to format the paper:

  • Set the top, bottom, and side margins of your paper at 1 inch.
  • Use double-spaced text throughout your paper.
  • Use a standard font, such as Times New Roman or Arial, in a legible size (10- to 12-point).
  • Use continuous pagination throughout the paper, including the title page and the references section. Page numbers appear flush right within your header.
  • Section headings and subsection headings within the body of your paper use different types of formatting depending on the level of information you are presenting. Additional details from Jorge’s paper are provided.

Cover Page

Begin formatting the final draft of your paper according to APA guidelines. You may work with an existing document or set up a new document if you choose. Include the following:

  • Your title page
  • The abstract you created in Note 13.8 “Exercise 1”
  • Correct headers and page numbers for your title page and abstract

APA style uses section headings to organize information, making it easy for the reader to follow the writer’s train of thought and to know immediately what major topics are covered. Depending on the length and complexity of the paper, its major sections may also be divided into subsections, sub-subsections, and so on. These smaller sections, in turn, use different heading styles to indicate different levels of information. In essence, you are using headings to create a hierarchy of information.

The following heading styles used in APA formatting are listed in order of greatest to least importance:

  • Section headings use centered, boldface type. Headings use title case, with important words in the heading capitalized.
  • Subsection headings use left-aligned, boldface type. Headings use title case.
  • The third level uses left-aligned, indented, boldface type. Headings use a capital letter only for the first word, and they end in a period.
  • The fourth level follows the same style used for the previous level, but the headings are boldfaced and italicized.
  • The fifth level follows the same style used for the previous level, but the headings are italicized and not boldfaced.

Visually, the hierarchy of information is organized as indicated in Table 13.1 “Section Headings” .

Table 13.1 Section Headings

A college research paper may not use all the heading levels shown in Table 13.1 “Section Headings” , but you are likely to encounter them in academic journal articles that use APA style. For a brief paper, you may find that level 1 headings suffice. Longer or more complex papers may need level 2 headings or other lower-level headings to organize information clearly. Use your outline to craft your major section headings and determine whether any subtopics are substantial enough to require additional levels of headings.

Working with the document you developed in Note 13.11 “Exercise 2” , begin setting up the heading structure of the final draft of your research paper according to APA guidelines. Include your title and at least two to three major section headings, and follow the formatting guidelines provided above. If your major sections should be broken into subsections, add those headings as well. Use your outline to help you.

Because Jorge used only level 1 headings, his Exercise 3 would look like the following:

Citation Guidelines

In-text citations.

Throughout the body of your paper, include a citation whenever you quote or paraphrase material from your research sources. As you learned in Chapter 11 “Writing from Research: What Will I Learn?” , the purpose of citations is twofold: to give credit to others for their ideas and to allow your reader to follow up and learn more about the topic if desired. Your in-text citations provide basic information about your source; each source you cite will have a longer entry in the references section that provides more detailed information.

In-text citations must provide the name of the author or authors and the year the source was published. (When a given source does not list an individual author, you may provide the source title or the name of the organization that published the material instead.) When directly quoting a source, it is also required that you include the page number where the quote appears in your citation.

This information may be included within the sentence or in a parenthetical reference at the end of the sentence, as in these examples.

Epstein (2010) points out that “junk food cannot be considered addictive in the same way that we think of psychoactive drugs as addictive” (p. 137).

Here, the writer names the source author when introducing the quote and provides the publication date in parentheses after the author’s name. The page number appears in parentheses after the closing quotation marks and before the period that ends the sentence.

Addiction researchers caution that “junk food cannot be considered addictive in the same way that we think of psychoactive drugs as addictive” (Epstein, 2010, p. 137).

Here, the writer provides a parenthetical citation at the end of the sentence that includes the author’s name, the year of publication, and the page number separated by commas. Again, the parenthetical citation is placed after the closing quotation marks and before the period at the end of the sentence.

As noted in the book Junk Food, Junk Science (Epstein, 2010, p. 137), “junk food cannot be considered addictive in the same way that we think of psychoactive drugs as addictive.”

Here, the writer chose to mention the source title in the sentence (an optional piece of information to include) and followed the title with a parenthetical citation. Note that the parenthetical citation is placed before the comma that signals the end of the introductory phrase.

David Epstein’s book Junk Food, Junk Science (2010) pointed out that “junk food cannot be considered addictive in the same way that we think of psychoactive drugs as addictive” (p. 137).

Another variation is to introduce the author and the source title in your sentence and include the publication date and page number in parentheses within the sentence or at the end of the sentence. As long as you have included the essential information, you can choose the option that works best for that particular sentence and source.

Citing a book with a single author is usually a straightforward task. Of course, your research may require that you cite many other types of sources, such as books or articles with more than one author or sources with no individual author listed. You may also need to cite sources available in both print and online and nonprint sources, such as websites and personal interviews. Chapter 13 “APA and MLA Documentation and Formatting” , Section 13.2 “Citing and Referencing Techniques” and Section 13.3 “Creating a References Section” provide extensive guidelines for citing a variety of source types.

Writing at Work

APA is just one of several different styles with its own guidelines for documentation, formatting, and language usage. Depending on your field of interest, you may be exposed to additional styles, such as the following:

  • MLA style. Determined by the Modern Languages Association and used for papers in literature, languages, and other disciplines in the humanities.
  • Chicago style. Outlined in the Chicago Manual of Style and sometimes used for papers in the humanities and the sciences; many professional organizations use this style for publications as well.
  • Associated Press (AP) style. Used by professional journalists.

References List

The brief citations included in the body of your paper correspond to the more detailed citations provided at the end of the paper in the references section. In-text citations provide basic information—the author’s name, the publication date, and the page number if necessary—while the references section provides more extensive bibliographical information. Again, this information allows your reader to follow up on the sources you cited and do additional reading about the topic if desired.

The specific format of entries in the list of references varies slightly for different source types, but the entries generally include the following information:

  • The name(s) of the author(s) or institution that wrote the source
  • The year of publication and, where applicable, the exact date of publication
  • The full title of the source
  • For books, the city of publication
  • For articles or essays, the name of the periodical or book in which the article or essay appears
  • For magazine and journal articles, the volume number, issue number, and pages where the article appears
  • For sources on the web, the URL where the source is located

The references page is double spaced and lists entries in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. If an entry continues for more than one line, the second line and each subsequent line are indented five spaces. Review the following example. ( Chapter 13 “APA and MLA Documentation and Formatting” , Section 13.3 “Creating a References Section” provides extensive guidelines for formatting reference entries for different types of sources.)

References Section

In APA style, book and article titles are formatted in sentence case, not title case. Sentence case means that only the first word is capitalized, along with any proper nouns.

Key Takeaways

  • Following proper citation and formatting guidelines helps writers ensure that their work will be taken seriously, give proper credit to other authors for their work, and provide valuable information to readers.
  • Working ahead and taking care to cite sources correctly the first time are ways writers can save time during the editing stage of writing a research paper.
  • APA papers usually include an abstract that concisely summarizes the paper.
  • APA papers use a specific headings structure to provide a clear hierarchy of information.
  • In APA papers, in-text citations usually include the name(s) of the author(s) and the year of publication.
  • In-text citations correspond to entries in the references section, which provide detailed bibliographical information about a source.

How to write effective subheadings for your health content

Subheadings are essential for structure and readability. Here's how to write effective subheadings that engage your readers and promote literacy.

LAST UPDATED February 10, 2023 | FIRST PUBLISHED April 5, 2021 | BY Michelle Guillemard

write effective subheadings

Subheadings support readability, literacy and comprehension because they:

  • Create a smooth flow
  • Keep readers engaged and reading
  • Break up long paragraphs
  • Highlight important sections
  • Make your content look beautiful at a glance
  • Provide a scannable overview of the content’s key topics.

According to bestselling author and content marketer Neil Patel, subheadings are “just as important” as headlines. So are you giving your subheadings the attention they deserve?

Effective subheading writing involves more than inserting a new subheading every second or third paragraph, though. There are specific techniques involved in writing subheadings that shine.

Here are some readability best practices to help you assess your writing and write effective subheadings for your health content.

Use specific, explanatory subheadings

Subheadings are most useful when they are:

  • Explanatory
  • Descriptive

Think of your subheadings as a roadmap, outline or guide to your content.

Use questions for more effective subheadings

Questions make great subheadings in health content because readers are often searching for answers to their health concerns. If you’re writing patient education material , chances are your readers have a specific question in their minds.

Perhaps they are reading about coronary artery disease and only want to know the possible treatments. They’ll be scanning the content looking for the answer to that question. Their eyes will be drawn to a stand-out section on treatments.

A clear subheading that reads: “What are the treatments for coronary artery disease?” will catch your readers’ attention and be more effective than a subheading that reads: “Treatments.”

Here’s an example of generic vs specific subheadings.

Use the right font size

Your main subheadings should be smaller than your main heading but larger than the body copy.

Like your main heading, subheadings convey importance. The subheading’s font size needs to indicate the level of importance.

When you’re writing subheadings, check that the space underneath the subheading is consistent and clear, too.

If you have layers of subheadings (eg a group of H3 subheadings beneath an H2 subheading), drop the font size accordingly. Make sure every subheading of the same level is the same size.

Here’s an example of how you might format different headlines in a paragraph within a patient handout about skin cancer. The H2 headline is the main subheading, and the H3 headline is a section underneath the H2 heading.

H2: What are the most common types of skin cancer?

The most common types of skin cancer  …

H3: What is basal cell cancer?

Basal cell cancer is …

H3: What is melanoma?

Melanoma is …

Pay attention to formatting and details

In addition to making sure that the font size of your subheadings is consistent, these formatting tips will make your subheadings clearer and more engaging:

  • Avoid colons or brackets – extra punctuation can make the subheading more difficult to scan
  • Add a leading sentence before writing a bullet point list  – don’t include bullet lists directly after subheadings, as this can confuse readers
  • Don’t change the font of the subheadings – keep your fonts consistent, unless the brand guidelines specify otherwise
  • Use numbers consistently – some documents insert automatic spacing when using numbers, so always check for consistency
  • Maintain enough white space between subheadings and paragraphs – white space supports readability and literacy
  • Keep each paragraph length to subheading ratio consistent – avoid following an extremely long paragraph with a short one unless necessary.

Adapt your subheadings for the style of content you’re writing

Different styles of content require different strategies for subheadings. Your approach to subheadings will depend on what you’re writing and the intended audience. For example:

  • Blogs and articles  – use descriptive or actionable subheadings
  • Patient education materials  – use subheadings that support the patient journey, from diagnosis to treatment
  • Educational content and how-to guides  – use subheadings that summarise the key learning or take-home message
  • News  – check with your client or editor, as traditional news doesn’t always contain subheadings.

Conduct a specific subheading edit

Reviewing your subheadings should be a key part of your medical editing process. As you assess your subheadings’ effectiveness, consider these questions:

  • What is this subheading’s section about?
  • What is the most important part of this section?
  • What do I want the reader to take from this section?
  • Is the subheading related to the title?
  • Are all my subheadings a similar length?
  • Is there one key point in each subheading?

By focusing more time and effort on your subheadings during the writing process, you can write more effective health content. That means your work will be easy to scan, read, understand and remember, supporting health literacy and enhanced health outcomes. And that’s a win for both you and your readers!

News directly from Cornell's colleges and centers

'Playing Place — Board Games, Popular Culture, Space' released

By molly sheridan.

"I have to admit that the only board game I really played as a kid was Monopoly. I was always the banker, and I always cheated," confesses Architecture Professor Medina Lasansky with a conspiratorial laugh while sharing the inspiration behind Playing Place — Board Games, Popular Culture, Space , a new book out from MIT Press which she edited in partnership with Chad Randl (Ph.D. HAUD '14). The volume, printed in full color and rich with imagery, collects 38 essays by contributors spanning a wide range of experience and expertise that illuminate, as the editors' introduction explains, "what board games, past and present, tell us about larger place-based cultural attitudes, assumptions, and anxieties."

The impetus for the book came out of Lasansky's Archi.Pop class, which draws connections between architecture and design and popular culture. One unit asks students to play a board game and think about how that relates to their understanding of space.

"Students should know about pop culture when they go out in the world, and I encourage them to think about board games like everyday life," Lasansky says. "A lot of people play with games and toys, and it helps them think about ideas about space and place without them knowing it. I used to teach the Italian Renaissance, and it took me so long to get students up to speed and to be able to ask interesting questions, whereas in Archi.Pop, they know all this stuff, so they can begin right away being creative and thinking critically."

The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester also proved to be an invaluable resource in developing the project. Housing an archive of some 29,000 games and employing a very helpful archivist, trips there introduced Lasansky and Randl to the amazing range of options available — from the weird to the scandalous to the inspiring, and even the original blueprint to Scrabble, which as it turns out was designed by an unemployed architect.

In the midst of planning the book, COVID hit, which Lasansky suspects led them to a better, more accessible project in the end. Renewed interest in board games paired well with their decision to take a more relaxed approach to what was originally envisioned as a collection of long articles rather than the shorter essays covering a wider range of games that they eventually commissioned. They tapped contributors who they knew would have fun with the project while also bringing scholarly insights to the table. Some covered the usual suspects such as Life, Risk, and Monopoly, while others dove into more obscure childhood favorites such as Barbie Queen of the Prom and Uranium Rush.

Haason Reddick trade grades: Jets acquire Eagles pass rusher in exchange for conditional draft pick

Reddick is heading to the big apple.

reddick.jpg

The New York Jets are bolstering their pass-rushing unit. The club has agreed to terms with the Philadelphia Eagles on a trade to acquire All-Pro linebacker Haason Reddick , according to CBS Sports lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones . In exchange for Reddick, Philadelphia will receive a conditional draft pick in 2026. Per Jones, it is currently a third-round selection but can become a second-rounder if Reddick plays 67.5% of the defensive snaps in 2024 and has 10-plus sacks.

A trade out of Philly has been looming over Reddick throughout the offseason, particularly with the 29-year-old entering the final year of his contract. For 2024, Reddick is set to make a base salary of $14.25 million and has a $21.8 million cap charge. The Jets will take on $14.5 million of Reddick's total compensation for 2024 while the Eagles will foot the bill on his $1 million roster bonus that was due earlier this month, per NFL Media. The Eagles had given Reddick permission to seek a trade earlier this offseason, and the writing appeared to be on the wall for his departure after the team restructured Josh Sweat's contract and signed fellow pass rusher   Bryce Huff in free agency.

Speaking of Huff, his departure from the Jets this offseason is what created the hole that is now being filled by Reddick, so this is a roundabout swap between these two franchises.

Reddick entered the league as the No. 13 overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Temple. He played four seasons with the club before having a one-year stint with the Carolina Panthers before landing in Philadelphia. With the Eagles is where Reddick blossomed into a premier pass rusher, earning back-to-back Pro Bowl nods over the past two seasons as well as second-team All-Pro honors in 2022.

Here are our instant grades for the deal:

Overall, this is a pretty even swap between these two Super Bowl contenders. Philadelphia gains a slight edge in this trade if we look at the totality of what led us to the deal. The club signed Bryce Huff to a three-year deal earlier in free agency, which is what made Reddick expendable and created a need at pass rusher in New York. The Eagles got younger at the position with Huff set to enter his age-26 season and Reddick entering his age-30 season, while not sacrificing dramatically from a talent standpoint. While Reddick is more decorated throughout his career, Huff has developed into a strong pass rusher, who is coming off a career-year 10-sack season in 2023.

As for the trade itself, it's conceivable this turns into a second-rounder. Reddick has topped 10-plus sacks in each of his past four seasons and has proven to be an every-down player, notching at least 74% of the defensive snaps in each of the past four years as well. So, if you look at it as the Eagles getting Huff and (at worst) a third-rounder in 2026 for Reddick, that's quite a return.

While we have the Eagles technically "winning" this deal by a hair, the Jets have landed on their feet quite nicely by acquiring Reddick, who is one of the more underrated pass rushers in the league. He slots into Huff's role as an ideal replacement and -- for 2024 -- should prove to be the superior player. It's also a relatively low-risk move for the Jets in terms of the draft capital they gave up. Reddick is only signed through this season and if the team can't extend him, they would get a compensatory pick in return for him.

Reddick also jives with New York's "win now" mode that they find themselves in with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback. The club has made a series of short-term deals this offseason to bolster their chances of hoisting a Lombardi Trophy and Reddick is the latest chess piece to move. A pass-rushing rotation of Reddick, Jermaine Johnson II , Will McDonald IV , and John Franklin-Myers is downright scary. The uncertain future beyond 2024 and the possible cost of a second-rounder is what prevents this from drawing even with Philly in the grade department, but this fills a drastic need with a top-tier talent.
