How to Write a Great College Essay About Music (with examples)

Admissions officer reviewed by Ben Bousquet, M.Ed Former Vanderbilt University

Written by Alex McNeil, MA Admissions Consultant

Key Takeaway

Ask any admissions officer if they’ve read a college essay about music, and they’ll definitely say yes. Between music extracurriculars and academic interests in music, it’s is one of the most common college essay topics.

So does that mean that you shouldn’t write your college essay about music?

Not necessarily. But as with any common college essay topic, some approaches are better than others.

Let’s get into it.

Why you should (and shouldn’t) write your Common App essay about music

As we explained in our Stanford Items exercise , writing your college essay on a common topic isn’t off-limits. In fact, most college essays share common topics and themes. Trying to find a completely unique, never-been-done-before topic is almost impossible. And writing about a quirky topic in hopes of coming across as unique usually backfires.

In other words, it’s likely that you’ll write about the same topic as someone else.

The problem arises, however, when you write about a common topic in a cliche way . Cliches are always a danger in college essays, but in especially college essay topics that tend to surface again and again.

To avoid cliches, your college essay about music needs to be deeply personal, specific, and meaningful. You’ll want to let go of any over-generalizations or truisms and focus on the details of your own story.

Because you’ll need to write meaningfully and vulnerably, you should only write your college essay about music if you have something genuine and significant to say.

The Best Ways to Approach Your College Essay about Music

College essays about music aren’t off the table, but you should be thoughtful in how you write about them. The following two approaches will help you avoid cliches and find an authentic, meaningful story that fulfills all the requirements of a personal statement .

Writing about music as an academic interest

If you’re interested in studying music in college, then you can consider writing your college essay about music as an academic interest. A college essay about your academic interest in music can show fantastic intellectual fit with a school.

Let’s say you want to study music theory or composition. You might write about a topic you find compelling, a problem you’ve solved, or even a recounting of your journey becoming interested in the subject.

Or maybe you’re an aspiring performer planning on studying music performance. As an admissions officer, I read outstanding essays about students performing their favorite pieces, creating emotional music projects, and teaching lessons to young children.

No matter your topic, your goal with this approach is to show an intellectual spark, a curiosity and passion that will demonstrate to your admissions officers that you’ll be a great addition to the music community on their campuses.

Writing poignantly about a deeply meaningful extracurricular

The previous approach is great if you want to study music, but what if music is just an extracurricular passion of yours? Don’t worry—you can still write about it.

In that case, the best way is to focus on meaning. Remember: personal statements should be deeply-meaningful reflections on your personal strengths.

To start, reflect on your music extracurricular. Is it playing guitar in a band? Playing trombone in your school’s symphony? Learning piano from your grandma? How your love of poetry turned into a love of songwriting?

Next, think about what strengths you have to showcase. If you play guitar in a band, maybe you want to highlight your collaborative spirit. If you love poetry and songwriting, perhaps you focus on your creativity.

Writing about your love of music in a way that draws upon your strengths will make sure that your Common App essay avoids the following two approaches and gives admissions officers a reason to admit you.

Approaches to Avoid

While the following two approaches aren’t necessarily bad, they are the most cliche ways of approaching a college essay about music. You might want to consider avoiding them.

An inauthentic tale of triumph

Let me tell you a cliche story.

When I was in fourth grade, I decided to join the school orchestra. I found it exceedingly difficult at first. No matter how hard I tried, I never could seem to place my fingers correctly on the fingerboard. Every sound I made mimicked a screeching cat. But I decided not to give up. I practiced every day after school and on the weekends. By the time I was in ninth grade, I had made it into my high school’s top orchestra.

Is that a lovely story? Yes, absolutely. Is it hearty enough for a college essay? No. While it tells a good narrative of growth and progress, it remains on the surface of the writer’s life. It comes across as a convenient way to brag about your strengths instead of exploring them in a genuine way. In this example, the story also focuses on events that happened way too far in the past.

A song that changed your life

This approach is by far the most common cliche in college essays about music. We’ve all been there: a favorite song that transports you to a moment in your life whenever you hear it. It makes sense that you’d want to write about yours.

But there’s a problem with this approach. Too often, it reads as trite or unoriginal, and the end result usually doesn’t say much about the writer. And when it does, the message an admissions officer gets doesn’t typically give them any more reason to admit you. Since you want your college essay to be meaningful, even vulnerable, and strengths-based, you’re better off choosing another topic that better speaks to who you are.

Key Takeaways + Examples

College essays about music aren’t for everyone. But when you get it right, you can strike the perfect chord with admissions officers (you’re welcome for the pun).

As you go, dig deep, find something genuinely personal, and try to avoid the most common and cliche ways of approaching the topic.

6 Ways to Write a Great Music School Essay

music school essay

For students applying to music school the application essay is critical. To write a great essay you need to brainstorm, use an outline, talk about yourself, write some compelling content, use the proper format, and use online writing and editing tools. Here are six ways to write a great music school essay.

You could be assigned a topic, or be writing about a topic of your own choosing, in both cases, brainstorming will help get those creative juices flowing. If you are assigned a topic, think about what sort of paper you want to write. Will it be a general overview, or an analysis with a more specific focus? Since this is an admissions essay, you will probably be writing about yourself. Jot down notes about your ambitions, strengths, and personality. Determine what the purpose of your essay will be and apply that purpose to your chosen topic. It’s best to avoid sensitive topics such as politics and religion.

Use an Outline

An outline is a great way to organize your thoughts before you begin writing your essay. An outline will allow you to better make connections between the ideas, and serve as the basic structure for your essay. List your main ideas, with smaller ideas listed underneath each main point. Some people prefer to use a diagram, which involves writing the main topic in the center of a page and then drawing lines out to connecting ideas.

Talk About Yourself

Tell the reader about yourself. Give them an honest peak into your life and what it’s like to be you. Let them know what makes you special and unique. Talk about some hardships and challenges you have faced in your life. You’re applying for a very rigorous and demanding program, so showing that you have proven resiliency and inner strength is a good indicator that you will be able to handle the challenges of music school.

“The first thing you will write is your first draft. It’s important to let your ideas flow here, don’t worry about spelling, editing, or grammar yet. You just want to get your thoughts out on paper,” advises Robert Wolfe, educator at Essayroo . Don’t write based on what you think the approval board wants to hear. Write honestly about your experiences, the last thing you want is to come off as disingenuous. Craft an intriguing opening line, something that sets the tone for your paper and also gets the reader interested and invested in your story. The really important thing is to display your quality of thinking, to show you are an intelligent and thoughtful person who belongs in their institution.

Follow the basic structure of introduction, three or four explanatory paragraphs, and conclusion. Introduce your content with topic sentences, and back up any claims you make with facts and details. Don’t forget to include transitions to connect sections. Be sure to follow the instructions you are given and cover the points requested.

Use Online Tools

Writing doesn’t come naturally to everyone, so do not hesitate to get some help from the professionals. Here are some useful resources to get you started:

  • ViaWriting and SimpleGrad : These are grammar resources you can access to check your essay for grammatical errors. Don’t take any chances with your admission essay, get some help from the experts.

  • Let’s Go and Learn and StateOfWriting : Check out these useful writing guides for advice and ideas on how to improve your essay. Even experienced writers can use some writing help from time to time.

  • AcademAdvisor and My Writing Way : Check out these educational communities for help and suggestions on how to improve your essay. You’ll find people who have written successful music school essays.

Writing a great music school application essay doesn’t have to be difficult. Just remember to brainstorm, use an outline, talk about yourself, write some compelling content, use the proper format, use online writing and editing tools, and you’ll be a shoo-in for the music school of your choice.

Student Essay: "Preparing for My School Musical"

As told to an ETM Partner School Teacher

“Have you ever imagined standing on a stage with your friends, music playing, the band playing, your favorite music teacher and a huge audience?

Well, I experienced it!

Last year [in 2018] in my school we had a concert. The stage was decorated, students were wearing sunglasses, and it felt good to be up there in front of my family and with my friends. There were all types of instruments being played during the concert. I learned a lot about music and instruments.

While I was on the stage, I felt nervous, but it was great standing next to my friends. We all had to wear the same color. We looked good! We wore yellow and red shirts. I sat in the front of the stage because I had a solo. My music teacher taught me a special song. I held the microphone, took a deep breath, and knew that she and my family were proud of me .

As I sang the song, I remember all of the hard work it took for us to perform at the show. I remember staying after school and rehearsing. It made me feel proud of myself, my friends, and my school.

During the concert the students were singing, the band was playing, parents were cheering, and some of the kids were playing the piano and drums. I was smiling and felt happy to be on stage because I enjoy music and acting.

My music teacher selected me to be a part of the 4th grade chorus and I have a speaking role as a king named “Gilgamesh.” This is a role for my school’s musical called, “Dig it!”

I am learning so much from the music program at my school and concerts . I learned lyrics, dance moves, songs, breathing techniques and notes. All of our songs for the concert were about spring time. I also learned that being on the stage is fun. I would like to learn more about music and I also want to join my school’s 5th grade band next year.”

As we discussed, your music essay can be just about anything; it can be a concert report or an analytical paper about the evolution of music.
  • Continue by researching the topic. Gather all the relevant materials and information for your essay on music and start taking notes. You can use these notes as building blocks for the paper. Be prepared; even for short essays, you may need to read books and long articles.

A thesis statement is a must as it informs readers what the entire music essay is about. Don't be afraid to be bold in your statement; new outlooks are always appreciated.
  • Next, you'll need a music essay introduction. Here you introduce the readers to the context and background information about the research topic. It should be clear, brief, and engaging. You should set the tone of your essay from the very beginning. Don't forget the introduction is where the thesis statement goes.
  • One of the most important parts of essay writing is crafting a central body paragraph about music. This is where you elaborate on your thesis, make main points, and support them with the evidence you gathered beforehand. Remember, your music essay should be well structured and depict a clear picture of your ideas.
  • Next, you will need to come up with an ideal closing paragraph. Here you will need to once again revisit the main points in your music essay, restate them in a logical manner and give the readers your final thoughts.
  • Don't forget to proofread your college essay. Whether you write a long or short essay on music, there will be grammatical and factual errors. Revise and look through your writing with a critical mind. You may find that some parts need rewriting.

How do you think I should approach writing about this topic in a way that stands out to college admissions officers while still being genuine? Thanks in advance!

First, it's great that you want to write about your passion for music, and approaching the essay with sincerity is definitely the right mindset! To make your essay stand out, focus on personal stories, unique experiences, and the specific aspects of music that have impacted your life.

1. Personal stories and deep connections: Think about significant moments related to music that genuinely changed you or shaped your character. This can be a powerful emotional experience at a concert, overcoming challenges in learning a new instrument, or collaborating with a diverse group of musicians.

2. Unique experiences: Reflect on any unique experiences you've had with music that distinguishes you from other applicants. This could include creating an original composition, organizing a charity concert, or volunteering to teach music to underprivileged children.

3. Specific aspects of music: Instead of focusing on music in general, highlight a specific aspect that resonates with you. It can be a particular genre, artist, or instrument that inspired you. Explain how this aspect influenced your perspective and how it has contributed to your personal growth.

4. Demonstrate growth and development: Show the progression of your relationship with music and how it has shaped you as a person. Overall, strive for authenticity and depth in your essay. By focusing on personal anecdotes, unique experiences, and specific aspects of music, you can create a compelling narrative that showcases your passion and how it has shaped you as an individual. Good luck with your essay!

✍️ Music Essay: How to Write

So, you have chosen your essay title. Now it’s time to start writing! But before you begin, read the sections below and learn how to organize your work.

How to Describe Music in Writing

You might think that writing about music is like dancing about architecture. Well, it is not an easy task, but we know how to cope with it.

Follow these tips while writing:

  • Make a comparison.  Explain which characteristics of a piece remind you or are identical to those of another one. It’s better to avoid comparing music from different composers in this case. Instead, evaluate and analyze two musical pieces from the same composer.
  • Describe the melody and dynamics.  You may want to use musical terms to show your knowledge and proficiency. Define the genre and what kind of instruments and tones are used.
  • Explain how it makes you feel.  You can use basic human emotions to describe the feelings of a listener. For example, it can be anger, tenderness, irritation, excitement, or nostalgia.
  • Use metaphorical language.  You may try using your imagination to create analogies. Be careful not to make your metaphors overcomplicated, as it may confuse the readers.

Essays about Music: Descriptive Words

Do you want your essay on music to be interesting and expressive? Then you may want to use descriptive vocabulary. Here are some of the terms that you can use in your essay to make it sound more professional:

  • Tempo is the “speed” of music. There are fixed expressions to define tempo—for example, largo, moderate, or presto. You can also describe how fast the music feels.
  • Timbre is the term that evaluates the “color” of music. Even if two instruments play the same note of the same volume, the sound is still different. This is how you can notice the color of the tone. For example, gentle, clear, heavy, or warm can be the adjectives to describe timbre.
  • Dynamics define the volume levels of music. The volume can be the same all the time, for example loud or soft. If the volume of music changes, you can use such expressions as “gradually gets louder” “or suddenly becomes soft.”
  • Harmony characterizes how all the notes and chords sound together. The sequence of chords—chord progression—defines how satisfying the melody is for the listener. For example, if the transitions are smooth, you can use such words as “relaxed” or “warm.”

Music Essay Outline

Like any other assignment, writing about music requires a proper essay outline that will guide you through the writing. The following sections will help you with that.

Before you start, here are some tips that will help you prepare for writing:

  • Do some prior research. Try to learn as much as possible about the piece you will be writing about. It’s also helpful to listen to the music several times with headphones to notice more details.
  • Don’t be afraid of asking questions. Consult your instructor if you’re unsure about your topic or the piece you have chosen.
  • Choose the topic that you like. If you’re passionate about a subject, it is always easier to write about it. Who said that homework could not be interesting?
  • Follow the recommendations that your instructor gives. It includes word limit, formatting style, deadline, and essay type.

Music Essay Introduction

The introduction is the section where you come up with a brief explanation of the topic. You may start it with a quotation, definition, or short statement that catches your reader’s attention and leads them to the essay subject.

A thesis statement is usually the last sentence of the introduction that defines the content of body paragraphs. It needs to be specific and not longer than two sentences. If you decide to shift the focus of your essay while writing, it’s crucial to change your thesis too.

Different types of essays require different thesis statements. Let’s take a closer look:

Music Essay Body

Your essay’s body is the most significant part of your writing. Here, you provide evidence and explanations of your claims.

The typical body paragraph structure includes:

  • A topic sentence explaining the argument for a particular paragraph.
  • An introduction to the evidence you gathered to support an argument.
  • Quotes and facts (don’t forget about proper citation!) and their explanation.
  • A connection between the evidence and the essay topic.
  • Paragraph transitions  leading your reader to the next section.

Topic Sentence about Music

Topic sentences can be used as a roadmap to writing your essay. Each body paragraph begins with a topic sentence that defines what the paragraph is about. It introduces the argument or main thought that will be explained. It’s also connected with the thesis statement.

It’s essential to make your thesis easy to understand, so it’s better not to overcomplicate it. For example, here’s an unsuccessful topic sentence with unnecessary words:

As stated above, the guitar is an essential musical instrument in rock music that defines how it sounds.

Instead, you can formulate it like this:

The guitar is the most iconic musical instrument in rock music that defines how it sounds.

Music Essay Conclusion

When writing a conclusion for your essay on music, you can use the following structure:

  • Summarize the text in a few sentences.
  • Review the key points of your paper.
  • Paraphrase the thesis.

To make your essay conclusion more effective, avoid the following:

✏️ Music Essay FAQ

Music is a vast topic. An essay might deal with anything ranging from trends in the 1950s to the best guitarists of all time. Writing an introduction to certain music styles or bands is also possible. In any case, the paper should be well-structured, logical, and cohesive.

Writing about music doesn’t necessarily require any specific skills. If you’re not familiar with the theory of music and can’t play musical instruments, you can just write about the music you like. Here are some topic ideas: favorite music band, style, or how you perceive music.

You can interpret music as a topic in various ways. If you are getting a degree in this field, you might want to write something more specific and technical. If your essay aims to merely inform and entertain, write about your favorite music style or band.

If you are writing an essay for school, a good choice would be an expository essay. It doesn’t require any specific knowledge of the music industry. Title suggestions might be: “My perception of music,” “My favorite band,” “How music can change the world.”

Music In Our Schools: Student Stories on the Impact of Music

By becky riffee | march 18, 2018.

Music In Our Schools: Student Stories on the Impact of Music

In anticipation for Music in Our Schools Month this March, I assigned my choirs an essay with the topic “The Impact of Music in My Life.” Though this is my twentieth year of teaching, I was unprepared to read some of the stories my students submitted. I had anticipated that, though some students would take the assignment seriously, I would have the usual number of perhaps somewhat superficial high school musings about music and life from students who just wanted to complete the assignment; however, the reality was far different. There were no thoughtless assignments submitted. As students poured out their hopes, their longings, their joys, and their pain, I was overwhelmed by how deeply music had not only infiltrated their heads, but it had also penetrated their hearts at a level of which I had been unaware.

The Impact of Music in My Life

“School choir is like a family. It’s a fun and warm place where you won’t be judged.”

“Choir is a place I can go to relax and not be stressed about anything. I can go in there and forget about what’s going on outside of music and just sing and have a good time.”

“I have always enjoyed choir because once you walk into the classroom, you know you are in a judge-free zone.”

“I started getting bullied in elementary school. In high school, it got way worse. I started cutting myself. I gave up. Then I met my choir class. They have become my family. And now I’m in three choirs and singing takes the stress out of my day.”

“When me and my brother were little, my parents got divorced. We would spend every other week with one parent, switching back and forth. I was always sad, but singing in music class at my elementary school made me happy. Now, I don’t associate with my father anymore. He’s not a good parent, but I go into choir and take my mind off of things and focus.”

“At the beginning of the school year, I was assaulted by someone I was close to. This sent me into a depressed and suicidal part in my life. In choir, we were singing about hope, and this helped me see that as long as I had a supporting “family” environment, I would be fine. I just had to remember that my hope is a thing with feathers that is perching in my soul.”

“It all started when my best friend was stabbed to death. That was when I started to do bad things and got in trouble more. So in 8th grade, my friend told me to try choir, so I gave it a shot. And it turned my whole life around. I finally found a ‘why’ to get out of trouble and away from the bad things I had done. I’ve been in choir ever since.”

“Choir has always been my safe place.”

As I continued reading essay after essay, I saw common threads of a sense of belonging, a place of safety, the feeling of family, and the promise of hope. Even the topic of sight-reading made the essays! Now, I am well aware that sight-reading is usually not on students’ top ten list of “Why I Love Choir,” but even as students confessed a love-hate relationship with sight-reading, they admitted that the skill has boosted their self-confidence and helped them become more competent musicians.

How Music Connects Us

There are so many more excerpts I could include, but I would like to share the story of three students in particular who exemplify this bond of family—students whose friendship has been born of shared musical experiences and strengthened through song. I will call them Bryan, Grace, and Diego.

When Bryan joined Men’s Choir as a freshman, he had no choral experience. He had come from a middle school that did not offer choir as an elective, and he had never been exposed to solfege. He had never sight-read before, but he was determined to learn. That year, the choir traveled to St. Louis, and Bryan went with us. We sang in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, and Bryan later said it was an experience that changed his life. He began auditioning for every singing opportunity that presented itself: madrigals, district honor choir, state honor choir, solo festival, and a summer choral institute at one of the state universities. He began taking theory every semester where he also honed his piano skills. By the end of his sophomore year, thanks to a supportive family and incredible ambition, he had participated in both district and state honor choirs, earned a one at both regional and state solo festivals, and had been awarded a full scholarship to participate in the aforementioned summer choral institute. I encouraged him to audition on the piano for jazz band to further his accompanying skills and experience being a part of an instrumental ensemble. His junior year, he auditioned for and was accepted to the NAfME National Honor Choir where his clinician was Anton Armstrong. It was another experience that changed his life. Bryan is now a senior. He is president of Choir Council, president of our Tri-M Chapter, and he will be attending St. Olaf in the fall to pursue a degree in music education, and sing under the direction of Anton Armstrong.

When Grace joined choir her freshman year, she already possessed strong music skills. She was a competent pianist, played the violin in the school orchestra, could sight sing, and showed great skill in the area of part independence through her experience of being a member of the local chapter of Sweet Adelines. Grace is a very intelligent and very driven young lady, and she applied for and was accepted into the International Baccalaureate program at our school. However, due to the nature of block scheduling and the IB schedule, students are usually unable to take band, choir or orchestra. At the end of her first semester in the IB program, Grace found herself very stressed and missing choir and orchestra. I encouraged her to talk to her parents, and together they decided that IB wasn’t a good fit for her. But because of IB, Grace’s academic schedule had been accelerated, so she found herself with many elective opportunities. She joined every choir, including the non-auditioned choirs, and took the theory and vocal music instruction courses offered at school. She began leading sectional rehearsals and taking solos to festival. Grace, too, is now a senior, is Vice President of Choir Council, historian of Tri-M, and wants to pursue a degree in music therapy.

Diego came to choir with an orchestral background. He had played cello in middle school and was now a part of the high school orchestra. He enjoyed singing and sang bass in choir. Like Bryan, Diego did not come to his high school choral experience with a strong sight singing or solfege background. However, he, too, pushed himself to excel. He continued to sing in choir, play in orchestra, and take theory classes. He took a broadcasting class and began showing an interest in audio production. He then started working with the orchestra teacher who has experience in that field, and now, as a senior, he leads sectionals and plans to pursue a degree in audio production.

Friends for Life

The three of them—Bryan, Grace, and Diego—had taken choir together for some time when they began coming to the choir room after school to hang out before one or the other one had to leave for work. Last fall, the fall of their senior year, I was working in my office when Bryan sheepishly poked his head into my office and asked if I’d like to come sight read with them since they were missing a soprano. I admit I did a double-take, but how could I possibly say no to an invitation such as that? Fast forward to February. The trio comes to the choir room almost every day after school, to chat about their respective days, to discuss their college plans, and yes, to sight sing. All three hold positions of leadership within the choir and are fast friends.

Yesterday, madrigals participated in an all-day choral festival at a local university in which several other high school choirs also performed. After our portion of the concert, we went back to our green room, and I looked over to see Bryan working on roman numeral analysis at the chalkboard, Diego in a friendly arm-wrestling match with a fellow bass, and Grace watching everything with tears standing in her eyes. When I asked her what was wrong, she said she was just sad that this is one of the last events of this kind in which she will perform with madrigals. I gave her a hug, then lightened the moment by reminding her that we still had a March concert, multiple festivals in April, a May pops concert, and baccalaureate and graduation to go, not to mention one final choir trip to Washington, D.C., in June! They will be leaving and going their separate ways soon, but I have a feeling they will keep in touch and remain friends for life.

Theirs is not an isolated story. I believe it happens in music classrooms all over the country and all over the world. Each music educator has stories of students whose lives have been changed through this powerful medium of music and through the discipline, teamwork, creativity, and friendships that are fostered in their classrooms. Music education matters. I can think of no greater privilege than to be a part of it.

Writing College Essays for Music School

by Steven Lipman

Before You Write…

Since the dawn of time, humans have expressed thoughts in writing. Whether documented on cave walls, ancient papyrus scrolls, hand-scribed Medieval codices, printed books beginning with Gutenberg, or computer devices in our day, the importance of communicating through written means has been a constant.

Those of you engaged in writing college essays about music , grad-school term papers, or applications for careers in the music industry are gaining awareness of the importance of developing solid writing skills. When communicating in writing with a party you have not yet met, your words will shape their first impression of you. Create your prose with care and precision.

Who Am I Talking to?

As a music journalist and editor, I offer some general observations that may prove helpful for those seeking to make a career in music. First, understand your audience. Are you writing a music personal statement  or musical resume for a college admissions officer or someone who you hope will become your future boss? Make sure to adopt the proper tone. As you begin to network in the music industry, determine whether your missive should  be business-like, warm and personable, or a combination of both. Know when to be formal and when it’s ok to be informal and conversational.

Writing a novel where you rely colorful imagery to portray a scene and have hundreds of pages to do it, is different from something of more limited scope. Be aware of when to express your thoughts as concisely as possible. Weed out extraneous words that don’t add meaning and clutter your ideas. I’m not advocating for dry, facts-only writing unless that is what’s needed (as in a résumé). In a personal essay, strike a balance by using colorful language and injecting some personality, but refrain from going down a bunny trail off topic. If your project or music college essay has a prescribed word count, make every word count!

Writing concisely takes discipline and effort. French philosopher and mathematician Blaise Pascal is quoted as writing: “If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter.” It takes time and effort to make sure your document is tightly written and says what you need it to.

Noteworthy Basics

As with a great piece of music, make sure you have a catchy opening. Readers will form an opinion instantly about whether they are in for an interesting read or not. Make sure the areas you want to cover are balanced. Be mindful of how much space you want give to each topic you plan to address and give each its due. Alluding to music again, you need a strong finish, a thought-provoking ending.

There are countless common grammatical and punctuation mistakes, here are a few that crop up often. Be on the look out for disagreements between the subject and verb in a sentence. Make sure singular nouns are matched with singular verbs and vice versa. Avoid overly long sentences spliced together with numerous commas. If your sentence has too many ideas, break it into shorter ones so that your reader hasn’t forgotten your main point by the time he or she gets to the final period.

Be sure that you fully understand the definitions of any unusual words you choose. If there is any doubt, look it up. A misused word speaks volumes to your reader. As an editor, I encountered writers who had fallen in love with a pet word and were reluctant to give it up it even after learning it didn’t mean what they thought. Be as willing to change a misused word as you would to correct a wrong note.

Thinking of pet word choices, watch out for echoes. By that I mean the overuse of distinctive words—especially in a single or consecutive sentences. Use the find option in your word processing program to check the number of times a word appears.

Never Forget

Always take the time to proofread carefully. Often while writing, we get to the point where we no longer see typos or other issues. Have a parent, teacher, or a friend proof your document. If that’s not possible, take a break. Leave your draft over night if time permits and come back to it with fresh eyes another day. It never feels good to discover typos in your document after you’ve sent it out.

Most likely we are not writing things for the ages like Beowolf or the Dead Sea Scrolls, but your story is important here and now. The goal is to hold someone’s interest and convey information. Care as much about expressing yourself in writing as you do in music. Make it your best effort.

6 Tips On Writing Your Music School Application Essay

essay on music room of my school

While the music school application process may seem tedious, the essay is by far the most challenging part. Not only does the essay portion share insight about who you are as a person, but it’s also what many college admissions counselors are most interested in (besides your audition).

The reality is that the bulk of students applying to music schools – particularly the more prestigious ones – are apples-to-apples on paper. The audition and the essay are the only arenas where your individuality and essence get to shine through.

It’s Time to Brush Up Those Essay Writing Skills

Here are six tips on how to write a music school essay to impress! We also recommend reading Music School Audition: How to Prepare .

1. Read the instructions carefully

While there are some boilerplate consistencies between essay themes or topics requested by schools, there can be subtle differences, too. Don’t assume that one essay will fit the bill for all schools. Read each set of instructions carefully to ensure you don’t miss anything, and follow them to the letter.

Even a simple mistake of submitting the essay in one font when the school requested another can get your application into the “no” pile because it gives inundated essay screeners a streamlined reason to weed applicants out. And it demonstrates that you follow directions!

2. don’t include another school’s name accidentally

Many admissions counselors note that they get essays that have another school’s name in the essay, because of the similarities mentioned above in essay themes/instructions. As a result, students who aren’t careful wind up forgetting to “find/replace” one school name for another.

For example – an admissions counselor at The Eastman School of Music may be happily reading your essay until they come to the line, “I have dreamed of graduating from the Boston Conservatory for my entire musical life…,” at which point s/he may stop reading.

Of course, counselors understand and expect that you’re applying to more than one school, but this grave oversight in proofreading, and check-marking which essay is for which school, casts a shadow on your application status.

3. Use Grammarly or a similar editing tool

Many of the best online editing tools, like Grammarly , allow free trial periods, after which you can cancel your account without any charge or penalty. It’s a good idea to use these editing tools upon completing your essays to fine tune them.

4. Print the essay on paper and read it out loud

The advent of online applications make the overall process easier for many, but the final proofreading and editing of your essay(s) should always be done on paper.

In a Phys.org article explaining how we read differently on paper than on screen, professor Maria Gilje Torheim explains, “ Reading long, linear, continuous texts over multiple pages that require a certain amount of concentration, referred to as "Deep Reading," the reader often experiences better concentration and a greater overview when reading from a printed medium compared to a screen.”

We tend to “scan” when we’re reading on screens, making it easier to miss mistakes in grammar and sentence structure. Reading out loud – and preferably to someone we trust – is a better way to catch and repair mistakes or awkward phrasing.

5. Review common graduate school essay “kisses of death”

There are two great articles worth reviewing before you write your music school application essay. The first is an actual study, Kisses of Death in the Graduate School Application Process , that systematically reviewed answers from psychology graduate admissions committee members about mistakes or common occurrences that diminish an applicant’s probability of acceptance.

The second is, 5 Fatal Flaws to Avoid in Your Grad School Statement of Purpose , written by professionals consultants who work with grad school applicants to improve their chances of acceptance.

Both offer insightful, evidence-based tips about what to do – and what not to do – to help your essay(s) shine brighter than your fellow applicants’ essay(s).

6. Be honest and be yourself

Finally, don’t try to be something you’re not or write an essay consisting of platitudes you think admissions counselors want to hear. Rest assured they’re reading those trite and overused sentiments over and over again from fellow applicants.

The goal is not to blend into the crowd but to stand out as the unique individual you are, so admissions counselors feel like you’ve connected with them via your words – a connection that compels them to accept your application.

My School Essay 500 Words

The place where children as the leaders of tomorrow study and where the future of the nation is shaped are called schools. Education is an essential weapon for tomorrow, so the good schools of today are important for the best future of a nation. Schools are the center of learning where we attend classes on various subjects, interact with the teachers, get our queries

answered, and appeared in exams. In my school, learning is more like a fun activity, because of the extra-talented teaching staff.

My school is a government primary school located on the outskirts of the city. Usually, when people think about a government school, they perceive it to be at an isolated location and have poor basic amenities and teaching facilities. But, despite being a government school, my school defies all such speculations. Teachers of my school are not only knowledgeable about the subjects they teach but also are skilled enough to teach through fun activities. For example, our physics teacher explains every concept by stating real-life examples that we could relate to. This way we not only understand the subject better. Moreover, not a moment I remember, when any teacher had ever replied rudely to any of the students. They always patiently listen and provide answers to all the queries posed to them. Learning at my school is fun and it is made possible only because of the teachers.

My school is very important in my life, in a way even more than my family. My family gives me love, care, and affection, and provides for all my other essential needs. But, all of this isn’t enough to make me a good human being and succeed in life.  Favorably, I am lucky enough to be enrolled in a prestigious school, and gaining a wonderful education, looking forward to realizing my dreams one day. The most necessary for success in life is education, and only my school provides it to me. Without my school and the education that it gives, I would be like a confused and wandering soul, almost aimless in life.

My school helps with my educational and overall personality development. It imparts education through classes, tests, and exams to teach me how to conduct myself confidently. It just feels so great to be in my school and be a part of everyday activities, be it lectures, sports, or Something else. While in school, I always feel happy, confident, enthusiastic, and loved. I make friends at school, those whom I will never forget and will always love them. My family supports my materialistic needs, but school is the place where my actual physical, social, and mental development takes place.  I know that every question that crosses my mind will be answered by my teachers. I also know that my school friends will always be at my side whenever I need them to be. As much as the studies, my school also stresses much on These activities as the management thinks that extracurricular activities are very essential for our overall personality development. My school provides dedicated teachers and staff for each extracurricular activity. We have a big sports ground with kits for all the major sports; a covered auditorium for dance and music and a separate basketball court.

The role my school plays in my personality development is fantastic. It not only imparts education in me but also teaches me how to conduct myself and how to behave decently and properly. I get trained in all the other necessary skills of life, like how to keep calm in challenging situations and help others as well. My school teaches me to be a good and evolved human being, to stay composed and progressive always. It also teaches me to be kind and generous to others and not differentiate them based on their caste, religion, ethnicity, or other divisions. These are some of the most essential personality traits that my school imparts to me, something that I will always be thankful for. Every time I think of my school, I think of it as a temple of education. A temple, where my soul meets education, making my life more meaningful and useful to society and the nation as well. It is a place where my aspirations get a wing and I get the strength and confidence to realize them. No other place in the entire world could replace my school and the role that it plays in my life. I will always be thankful to my friends, teachers, and the staff of my school, for making it such a comfortable and Educational place of learning.

Essay on My School for Students and Children: 100, 200, 500 Words

It's stated that school helps to mould us into more mature adults. An excellent school produces excellent students. Teachers at my school support kids in their extracurricular activities, sports, and academic endeavours. They serve as the foundation of the school and instil in us critical life principles that we must implement daily. Our cooperation with friends and classmates is something we learn in school. Values such as sharing are modelled in children from an early age. Studies and extracurricular activities are given equal weight to help us grow as people. Our schools will always try to concentrate on our complete development and help us become healthy adults.

All great men have been taught to read and write at their schools. Thanks to our school, we acquire the proper values at a young age. We impart a set of strict moral principles that assist us in the future. Most of your early recollections are likely to be associated with the school. Living together with our peers teaches us to smile, weep, share, and give support to one another. In addition to providing a framework for developing our moral character, schools also operate as a road map for achieving our goals.

The first few school years go by quickly and are the best of our academic lives, but the higher classes show us that life is not always straightforward. We make mistakes on tests, stay up late to complete homework, and receive criticism from teachers, but most importantly, we learn how to handle the challenges that life throws our way.

Millions of impressionable children's minds, which are as malleable as wet mud, depend heavily on schools for mental development. The teachers are skilled potters who shape us into a final product prepared to withstand the stresses of life without breaking. Even though the later years of school seem like a hardship, we must remember that school is some of the happiest years of our lives.

Man is not born intellectual; instead, he acquires information by arriving in this world and does so through his education. Any person can advance in the proper direction and succeed in life with the help of school. Every parent encourages their children to attend school from the start because they recognise the value of education and realise that knowledge is the foundation for a better future. Children exhibit a sense of unity and connection at school in addition to their mental growth. All students are encouraged to advance because there is no discrimination at the school, and everyone is treated equally.

My School Environment

My school is located in a peaceful area of the city, distant from the noise and pollution of the city, and green trees and plants surround it. This allows us to study in a calm and unpolluted environment. Our school contains roughly 50 rooms, and there are three to ten sections in each class. There are approximately 3,000 students in my school. Additionally, the school features a playground, garden, and canteen where we hang out with our friends during downtime.

In addition, swings have been made for the students of class 1 at my school so they can amuse themselves while they study. Children are also taught several experiments in computer laboratories, chemical labs, and physics labs. In addition, a sizable auditorium is present, where various festive and cultural programmes are occasionally held.

Discipline in My School

Discipline is a priority in my school. As soon as we enter the school, we have a morning assembly where we sing the national anthem. In addition, a dress code has been established in our school to maintain order for all of our students, and the cleanliness of our dress is given special attention in the classroom. My school has stringent rules about behaviour.

My Teachers at School

Every teacher at my school has a unique and approachable style of explaining every subject. Even the most challenging questions can be easily comprehended because of their unconventional teaching style.

My teachers are kind to the kids and assist them in resolving every issue, no matter how small or big they are. In addition, my school's principal is excellent; he sympathises with every child's problem and patiently listens to them. Every teacher at my school is fantastic. In my school, sporting events are occasionally organised in addition to academics. Additionally, the value of sportsmanship is emphasised, and all of the school's students are requested to participate in the athletic competition to demonstrate their abilities in this area.

Students who perform well are rewarded for boosting their morale and furthering their physical and mental growth. Sports are equally crucial to human life; in the same way, education is.

Things I have Learnt from My School

I have learnt many things from my school. It taught me how to respect elders and deal with my failures. All the skills and discipline I got is thanks to my schooling. I can proudly say that most of my success is because of my school. It moulded me into a productive member of society.

250 Words Essay on My Room

My room, my sanctuary, is more than just a physical space. It’s a canvas, reflecting my personality, my thoughts, and my aspirations. A room might seem an ordinary subject, yet it is a microcosm of one’s world, a mirror of one’s inner self.

My room’s layout is a blend of functionality and aesthetics. The room is dominated by a large window that lets in an abundance of natural light. A desk sits against one wall, cluttered with books, a laptop, and stationery, signifying my academic pursuits. The bed, on the other side, symbolizes rest and rejuvenation. The walls are adorned with posters of my favorite bands and inspirational quotes, revealing my tastes and values.

The Significance

Each element in my room carries a story, a memory, or a dream. The worn-out rug on the floor speaks of countless nights spent mulling over philosophical conundrums. The guitar in the corner whispers tales of my musical journey. The room, thus, is an archive of my life, preserving fragments of my existence.

My room is a sanctuary, a creative space, and a reflection of who I am. It’s a testament to my growth and evolution as a person. It’s not just a room, it’s an intimate part of my identity. As Virginia Woolf once advocated for a room of one’s own, I recognize the profound significance of this personal space in shaping my thoughts, my creativity, and ultimately, my life.

500 Words Essay on My Room

The sanctuary of solitude: my room.

My room, a sanctuary of solitude, is an embodiment of my personality and a mirror to my soul. It is a space that resonates with my thoughts, my dreams, my aspirations, and my fears. It provides a canvas where I can paint the colors of my imagination, and a stage where I can rehearse my life’s drama.

Architectural Aesthetics

The architectural aesthetics of my room are a blend of modern and traditional elements. The walls are adorned with a soothing shade of blue, symbolizing tranquility and calmness. The room is spacious, with a large window that ushers in the morning sun, creating a symphony of light and shadows. The wooden flooring adds a touch of earthiness, grounding the room’s overall aesthetic.

Personalized Decor

The decor of my room is a reflection of my personal taste and interests. A bookshelf teeming with a diverse collection of books, from philosophy to fantasy, stands in one corner. A desk cluttered with papers, pens, and a laptop signifies my academic pursuits. The walls are adorned with posters of my favorite bands and inspirational quotes, revealing my love for music and my philosophical inclinations.

Comfort and Functionality

Comfort and functionality are the cornerstones of my room’s design. The bed, with its plush comforter and a multitude of pillows, offers a haven for rest and relaxation. A comfortable chair and a desk provide a conducive environment for study and work. The room also boasts a small closet, meticulously organized, reflecting my penchant for orderliness.

Emotional Connection

My room is not just a physical space; it’s an emotional retreat. It has witnessed my moments of joy, my tears of sorrow, my frustration, and my triumphs. It’s where I retreat when the world becomes too overwhelming, a place where I can be myself without any pretense or judgment. The room, with its familiar scent and comforting silence, provides an anchor in the stormy sea of life.

In conclusion, my room is a microcosm of my world. It is a space that encapsulates my personality, my interests, and my emotions. It is a testament to my journey, my growth, and my evolution as an individual. It is more than just four walls and a ceiling; it is a sanctuary that offers solace, comfort, and inspiration. It is, in essence, an extension of myself.
