Now all of you have witnessed a glimpse of the strong bond between my parents; I have to tell you people that I have learned a lot from my parents and have collected a lot of knowledge from them for their present and future life. They are clear examples of true love.

Mom and Dad want to thank you for giving me life and every comfort by working hard day and night. I am overwhelmed with your unconditional love and care. Without both of you, I could not understand the meaning and importance of love and family. You have taught me everything that I need to learn for my life, for what I can never say, thank you. Happy anniversary to my parents.

Today is the 36th anniversary of my parent's marriage. It's late when I write this and will be tomorrow by the time my parents are actually able to read this post but these words are better said a little late than never.

My parents gave me many things growing up; shelter, food and love. The stuff you need to grow and live. But one of the best gifts they gave me was their love for each other . Their relationship is and has been a wonderful example of steadfastness, romance, sacrifice, compromise, devotion, respect, submission, commitment and friendship.

Growing up I learned many truths from my parents including these three; my dad would provide for his family, my mom would cook and take care of the details and they would always love each other . The security that came in knowing that was an undeserved blessing in my life, for which I have mostly God to thank. But thank you also to you, Mom & Dad, for choosing to honor your vows through all these years. I love you both so dearly and treasure the gift of your marriage.

Yes, that model of what marriage can look like is such a gift and one that many individuals have never had in their lives. My parents too provided a wonderful example that tides me through in rough seasons or patches and makes me eternally grateful. They were best friends and a real team and raised a family of 12 kids who all knew we were loved. I loved watching them snuggle on the couch or go for walks holding hands and I knew I wanted that when I grew up :)

Happy anniversary to your parents:) Mine celebrated their 35th a few years ago, and I remember looking at them and thinking about how much life that is-- and how much work it takes, in the midst of raising a family-- to get there. This principle, of the love parents share for each other being the foundation of a loving home, is one that strikes to my heart. My parents were divorced when I was in my preteens, and I know it changed my life forever. Although each of my parents are remarried, I will never be able to look at them the same again. Not in an angry or hurt way (both feelings I had to work through in grief), and I still greatly respect and love each of my parents, but it is just not the same anymore. When I married Glen I knew I had a chance to back out before the wedding and that as much as that would hurt it would be far better than changing my mind years later, and I wish more couples would do that before their wedding. Now, as our fifth anniversary is coming 'round the corner in just a couple of weeks, I am so proud to be starting a fresh example for our children - that we can show them how wonderful marriage can be, a gift, not only to each other, but to our children for the rest of their lives. It is sad that only in today's world when marriage is not valued like it once was that we realize the blessing we have when we find a husband and wife who enjoy each other, even after many years of marriage. It is a precious gift that should be held close to our hearts, and perhaps that is the greatest thing I have learned from my parents divorce, a hard lesson learned, but one I will forever remember!

It’s a myth that until you become a parent, you can truly appreciate your own. Although I admit that until I had to do this for my own sons (parenting has significantly raised my threshold for “gross”), I probably never truly appreciated you cleaning up after me when I puked all over myself, my bed sheets, my stuffed animals, and the rug. However, there is much more to say. On this very special occasion of your 50th wedding anniversary, I’d like to share a few things that I’ve really appreciated about you both, especially your decision to stay together for so long.

I don’t know who I owe that to, whereas most kids thank their parents for giving them a psychological life. I was an “accidental” or “unplanned” outcome of a teenage girl’s decision, and while everything for which I am grateful ultimately depends on her choice, I am grateful that she thought there might be someone like you out there with whom I would be much better off. The truth is that you are the kind of couple that many people adore, the kind that motivates others with your warm welcome, generosity, and kindness to everyone. Your regular deeds of kindness affect those around you, transforming them from irrational, insensitive maniacs on the road into the kind of motorists who not only let you merge in front of them without ramming you in the rear but also pull over to lend you a hand and a smile when you need it. Because of incredibly loving parents like you, you are a couple that has a positive impact on the world. This impact can help a young woman in trouble realize that it is worthwhile to choose life for her child.

These words don’t just sit there. Let me start by using my father as an example. This one never occurred to me until I moved to New England, where people speak, to put it mildly, differently. I’ll never forget the first time I noticed my father’s accent when I called home from Boston and said, “Gee, Dad is really starting to get a southern accent in the last year; he didn’t have such a strong one when I lived in Atlanta.”. A warm southern accent, however, only partially captures the depth of what Dad communicates through his voice. In stark contrast to the majority of the world, he answers the phone. While the typical response to my calls is a hurried “Hello,” which usually leads me to politely ask, “Is now an OK time to talk?”, my dad’s musical “Hello, this is Bill Wright,” makes me feel as though I’ve reached a wonderfully warm and welcoming soul. It has the ability to make me feel as though you are genuinely happy that I called. In the age of caller ID, this might not seem like a big deal, but you sounded this way even years ago, possibly when I was a telemarketer calling at dinnertime to try to sell you new vinyl siding. Every person who calls is made to feel wonderful by you. And one instance of this is through phone calls. What a generous gift you give to the world.
