Why Honesty Isn't Always the Best Policy

The honest truth about honesty..

Posted October 6, 2013 | Reviewed by Kaja Perina

Whether you’re getting it off your chest, venting, expressing yourself, airing your feelings or “just being honest," the truth about honesty is that honesty is not always the best policy.

What’s more, continuing on the path of full disclosure can actually bring permanent closure to your relationships!

The reality is we don’t need knives or guns to mortally wound those closest to us. Words cut like knives and it’s easy to bury your relationship with the verbal cuts of a “truthful” tongue.

The truth is honesty is often a veiled form of self-indulgence.

What do I mean by self-indulgence?

In a nutshell, when feelings build up, it’s frustrating to “sit” on them. And, of course, it feels damn good to release them. That feel good sensation is a form of gratification. It’s like taking an emotional poop, which provides an instant release of pressure. But when we dump emotional turds on others, we are flushing our relationships down the toilet.

It’s a sad fact that our education at home and in school doesn’t include teaching us how to manage our angry feelings. Since intimate relationships trigger negative feelings, this means most of us are mistreating the people we love most by lashing out and even verbally killing those we supposedly love in various overt and symbolic ways.

In my book Kiss Your Fights Goodbye: Dr. Love’s 10 Simple Steps to Cooling Conflict and Rekindling Your Connection , I discuss so-called Fight Traps, which are the dysfunctional ways that humans act out anger. There’s a continuum of dumping that ranges from outright physical violence on the one end of the spectrum to far subtler forms of aggression —honesty being the subtlest of all forms of assault.

While we may feel temporarily relieved when we shoot off rounds of honesty, we pay a terrible price for this temporary satisfaction, as we harm our relationships and our own self-esteem (you can’t feel proud of yourself when you misbehave).

The good news is that you can make the decision to change the way you handle your angry feelings; to consider what you say before you speak, to ask yourself how the other person will feel before you say or do x, y or z. To consider whether what you intend to say or do will be helpful and constructive to the other person and your relationship.

It's also important to remember that anger is never the primary emotion . When we become angry, it’s because we usually feel other more basic and vulnerable feelings such as hurt, sadness and fear .

Making the decision to get beneath the veneer of anger and speak from the most vulnerable part of your emotional core is the ticket. When you honestly speak from this place, you arouse a feeling of empathy rather than antipathy. This one simple shift is your secret to turning conflict into connection by fostering a truly intimate and loving relationship that is based on the right kind of honesty.

Honesty Isn’t Always the Best Policy in Relationships. Here’s When Experts Say It Might Be Better to Lie

Fingers crossed behind back

Y ou were probably taught to never lie: Your parents likely preached the power of the truth . Your partner told you honesty matters most.

But researchers say there is a lot we get wrong about deception, truth-telling and trust—and that, if mastered, lying the right way can actually help build connections, trust and businesses. “I believe that we should be teaching our kids, students and employees when and how to lie,” says Maurice Schweitzer, a professor at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, who studies deception and trust.

You’re more likely to be lied to (and told to lie) than you even realize, too—think of scenarios like your mom reminding you to tell your grandmother you enjoyed her meal, or you giving feedback to a co-worker that doesn’t capture the whole truth.

Still, the art of deception is more nuanced than you might think. Here, five scenarios where fibbing might be the best course of action, according to experts.

If you have someone’s best interests at heart

There are classic examples of lying being detrimental , and the most damaging kinds of lies tend to be those that promote your own self-interests at the expense of others.

But “prosocial” lies—fibs intended to benefit others—can actually build trust between people, according to research .

“People’s primary interest, at least when they receive information and build trust is in benevolence,” says Emma E. Levine, an assistant professor of behavioral science at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business, who studies honesty and trust. “People care about whether you have good intentions a lot more than whether the person is being honest per se.”

Just remember: Lies are most beneficial when they’re not selfish. If you tell your partner he or she looks great before a date to boost his or her self-esteem, that’s one thing, Schweitzer says. But saying it just to get your loved one out the door because you’re already late, he says, is where your motive can veer into selfish territory.

If there’s no time to change

Say your partner asks you how he or she looks right before walking on stage for a speaking event, or enquires about what you think of the speech just prior to reaching the podium. Even if you notice a stain on his or her outfit, or think the speech could use work, think about whether the person has the time to react to the information and control the situation, says Levine.

If there’s nothing your partner can do to improve or make a change in that moment, you might welcome deception, she says. Lying in this sense is likely seen as benefitting the other person because there’s truly nothing he or she can do in the moment.

Conversely, if your significant other does have the capacity to react to the information, honesty is the better choice, Levine says.

If you’re giving constructive criticism

When sharing feedback, honesty is important. And while it’s easy to use “I’m just being honest” as an excuse for “just being mean,” says Schweitzer, brutal honesty isn’t always the most effective way to get your message across.

Instead of telling a low-performing employee that he’s performing terribly, consider saying something like, “You’ve had a rocky start, but everyone struggles at the beginning,” then segueing into constructive criticism, says Schweitzer. Your feedback will likely be received better which in turn will benefit your business in the long run.

Right before a special occasion

The debate over lying is not only about whether honest information can help the situation, but also whether that information is delivered at the right time. “One thing people care about is whether honest information will distract them from something important,” says Levine.

An example: You hear your friend’s company is expecting layoffs right before she leaves for her wedding. Should you tell her?

“In these situations, people tend to appreciate withholding the truth until later,” says Levine.

It comes back to the idea of control—if your friend is about to leave for her wedding or honeymoon, she won’t be in a position to preemptively explore other job opportunities. And while every situation is different, consider asking yourself whether honesty in a situation like this would truly benefit the other person—or simply be a distraction, according to Levine.

If you’re not close with the person

Mild and well-intentioned deception can be even more beneficial in distant relationships, says Levine. “In more competitive relationships or first interactions, honesty is a lot more precarious, can damage relationships and reduce trust,” she says. That’s because both parties are less familiar with the other person’s true intentions and they each might wonder, is this person trying to undermine me?

Still, if you’re inclined to give honest feedback to a more distant acquaintance or a friend of a friend, Levine suggests providing the truth coupled with benevolence—something along the lines of, I really want you to do well, so I’m giving you this criticism.

Close relationships, on the other hand, can give way to more of an appreciation for honesty, she says, and confessing to friends is likely not as bad as you think. “We systematically overestimate how uncomfortable truth-telling will be,” Levine says.

Essay on Honesty is the Best Policy

Every human being must learn to be honest. Honesty means truth. If a person wants to be honest, he must learn to speak the truth in life. Moreover, by being honest, a person will develop a strong moral character, learn good behavior, maintain discipline, follow the rules and regulations intelligently, and will always be punctual.

Every child must have learned the phrase ‘honesty is the best policy.’ Children learn honesty from their parents, elders, and teachers. Still, people prefer to tell lies for their benefit Since the incidence of deceitful behavior is on a high, the revival of the teachings of honesty is necessary.

Benefits of Honesty

There are several benefits of honesty. Honesty helps in the development of morally strong characters. If you are honest, you will not be afraid of anything. You do not have to think about making false stories and then the fear of repeating the same in exact words. If you are honest, you do not have to remember any false stories. People will trust you more. An honest person will also develop discipline. An honest person will be extremely content, know what to do from time to time, and will not take any pressure or tension about anything. The health will improve, and the mind will be at peace. The person will be very punctual and will complete all tasks on time. Since more people will trust an honest person, he or she will find more friends and will be supported all around. An honest person will not be involved in cheating, lying, lack of trust, greed, stealing, and any other immoral acts.

Honesty promotes authenticity. It is a reflection of the thoughts and feelings of a person. It is a form of self-expression, and if a person is honest, people will know what he or she truly is. It also makes the person confident. To speak the truth, it needs a lot of courage and confidence. Only a coward will tell lies because he or she is afraid of the truth. Speaking the truth is an act of bravery. Telling lies also shows that the person is low on self-confidence.

Honesty brings maturity. An honest person speaks the truth in a mature, non-hurtful manner. Therefore, the person does not hurt others, and therefore, his or her relationship with others remains good. Such a good relationship develops a connection between people. Such good relationships also give you peace of mind. Therefore honesty brings high-quality and trustworthy friendships to a person.

Honesty makes a person feel free. They do not have to keep any secrets. They know what is right, and will speak it naturally. They do not have to take the tension of making a false story and say it, in the same manner, every time. Honesty keeps troubles away from a person.

How to Prevent Oneself from Lying?

People generally lie to avoid getting into trouble and to prevent hurting others. Honest people always have faith in the people whom they are talking to. It is wrong to assume that the listener will reject the truth. To be honest, people must have the courage to say the truth. No one likes to be lied to, and therefore, it is wrong to lie to others. People also have to be diplomatic in their presentation of the truth. They must not be blunt or rude, as it might hurt others. In this way, the true message reaches the listeners, and they take it in without getting emotionally hurt.

Is it okay to be Dishonest at Times

You were undoubtedly trained never to lie by your parents, who preached the importance of telling the truth. Your partner states that the most important thing is, to be honest.

But, according to studies, people do a lot of things wrong when it comes to deceit, truth-telling, and trust, and that, if mastered, lying the right way may actually help develop relationships, trust, and businesses.

You are also more likely to be lied to (and told to lie) than you realize imagine your mother telling you to tell your grandmother how much you enjoyed her food, or you providing incomplete feedback to a coworker.

LYING CAN BE JUSTIFIED IN THE FOLLOWING SCENARIOS

If you are Looking out for Someone's Best Interests:

There are many examples of lying being harmful, and the most harmful lies are those that promote your self-interest at the expense of others.

According to a study, "prosocial" lies—falsehoods intended to benefit others—can help people create trust.

Just keep in mind that lies are most effective when they are not self-serving. It is one thing to tell your friend he or she looks beautiful before a date to boost their self-esteem. However, be warned, saying it solely to push your friend out of the door because you are already late - that might drive you into a selfish zone.

If There is Not Enough Time to Make a Modification:

Let's say your mate inquires about how you think he or she looks shortly before coming on stage for a speaking engagement, or just before reaching the podium, about what you think of the speech. Consider whether the person has the time to react to the information and control the issue, even if you see a stain on his or her dress or think the speech may be improved.

You might accept deception if there is nothing your partner can do to improve or change things right now. As there is nothing he or she can do at the time, lying in this sense is typically comprehended as something which is benefiting the person at the receiving end.

If your significant other can react to the knowledge, however, honesty is the superior option.

If the Person is Not Close to you:

Deception that is mild and well-intentioned can be even more effective in long-distance relationships. Honesty is a lot more perilous in more competitive equations or first interactions, and it can damage relationships and reduce the amount of trust. That is because neither party knows the other's genuine motives, and they may ask aloud, "Is this individual trying to undermine me?"

Still, if you're inclined to provide candid comments to a distant acquaintance or a buddy of a friend, go ahead. Providing the truth while being benevolent—something along the lines of, "I truly want you to succeed, so I am giving you this feedback."

Close friendships, on the other hand, can foster a greater appreciation for candor, and confessing to friends is probably not as horrible as you think. We consistently underestimate how difficult it will be, to tell the truth.

The English language is full of idioms, or phrases and expressions that have a meaning unrelated to the actual words in the phrase. When it comes to “honesty is the best policy,” though, what you see might just be what you get. In this article, we’ll dive into the meaning of “honesty is the best policy,” plus show you how to use it and where it comes from. We’ll also explore the psychological and philosophical reasons why telling the truth is good for you and others. Honestly!

Things You Should Know

  • “Honesty is the best policy” is a proverb that means it’s best to tell the truth instead of lie, even when it seems difficult to do so.
  • Say “honesty is the best policy” to remind yourself that you’ll feel better after telling the truth, or to offer advice to someone facing a dilemma.
  • Telling the truth is linked to better mental and physical health. It also improves your sense of authenticity, leadership abilities, and makes others trust you.

“Honesty Is the Best Policy” Meaning

“Honesty is the best policy” is a proverb meaning it’s best to tell the truth.

  • By being honest, you’ll gain the trust and respect of others and you won’t have to maintain any lies or deceive people you care about.
  • Here's an example of how someone might use this phrase: “You should tell your friends the truth about what happened last night so you don’t have to keep lying, son. Honesty is the best policy, after all.”

How to Use “Honesty Is the Best Policy”

Step 1 Remind yourself that you’ll feel better later on if you’re honest now.

  • “I can’t believe I scratched my mom’s car! Well, I better rip the band-aid off since she’ll find out about it anyway. Honesty is the best policy, I guess!”
  • “I opened up about my mental health struggles, and it turns out a lot of people can relate! I wished I stopped hiding it sooner. Honesty really is the best policy!”

Step 2 Use the phrase...

  • Them: “I’m really upset with Brad for forgetting my birthday, but I’m not sure if it’s worth it to say something.” You: “Well, I say honesty is the policy. He’ll never know he hurt you if you don’t say something.”
  • Them: “I don’t know what to do! I accidentally printed the wrong version of those reports for the Board meeting today.” You: “Well, I’d let the Board know there was a mix-up and that you’re working on getting the right reports. Honesty is the best policy, and it’s better that they know you’re working on a solution than to have them think you didn’t catch it at all.”

Origins of “Honesty Is the Best Policy”

The idea of “Honesty is the best policy” has roots in multiple cultures.

  • One of the earliest recordings of the actual phrase in English comes from 1605. In his Europae Speculum , English politician Sir Edwin Sandys wrote, “Our grosse conceipts, who think honestie the best policie.”
  • Many famous American politicians and Founding Fathers have also popularized, written, or used the phrase in speeches, including Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and more.
  • The 1st President of the United States, George Washington, used the phrase in his farewell speech to the nation: “I hold the maxim no less applicable to public than to private affairs, that honesty is always the best policy."

Reasons Why Honesty Is Important

Step 1 Lying less is linked to better physical and mental health.

  • The link isn’t totally clear scientifically, but the results show that lying less can put you at ease and make you feel better overall.

Step 2 Telling the truth builds stronger relationships.

  • Being honest and transparent is key to a good relationship. People that love and care about you are likely very attuned to you and can sense when your words lack harmony with your feelings or actions.

Step 3 You’ll feel and appear more authentic.

  • A solid sense of authenticity is linked to increased happiness and life satisfaction, too.

Step 4 You’ll feel more secure in your abilities.

  • When you're honest and accept failures, though, you fully understand what your abilities are and can put in the time and effort to improve them, which increases your confidence and security.

Step 5 Honesty makes you a more effective and trusted leader.

  • Honesty also helps you be more comfortable being yourself at work, which improves your relationships with colleagues and the people you manage.

Step 6 People trust you more.

  • There’s always a respectful and polite way to tell the truth when it might hurt someone . However, there are not many instances where it’s respectful to lie.

Step 8 Your opinion has more value to others.

  • Most people crave honesty, even when they may not like what they hear. Be empathetic when you tell the truth and try to understand how it may make someone feel. That way, you can choose the kindest words and deliver your message constructively.

Step 9 Lying takes a lot of work and energy.

  • This doesn’t mean that all lies are dangerous to others. For example, if someone chooses not to buy concert tickets because you said they were more expensive than they really were, they may choose not to go to the concert. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve violated their autonomy, but they probably missed out on a great time!

White lies are usually OK when they spare people from unnecessary hurt.

  • On the other hand, telling them “This cake is awful!” would make them upset and wouldn’t benefit them, you, or your relationship (especially because there’s nothing they can do about the cake once it’s baked).
  • Consider if there’s a way to tell the truth without being harsh. In the birthday cake example, you could say “Wow! I’ve never had a flavor quite like this before,” or “I love trying new cakes!” so that you’re not being dishonest.
  • However, white lies can take a small toll on you. For example, if you always say “I’m fine!” when people ask about your recent breakup, you may not feel like you have the support you need while you go through a difficult time because everyone thinks you’re alright.

It is noticed that often simple topics that we have been hearing and writing about for many years are the ones that become the most difficult to write. One such topic is   'Honesty is the Best Policy'  IELTS essay. Here is how you can write an engaging and advanced essay on it.

Table of Contents

Honesty is the best policy essay: sample 1, essay on honesty is the best policy: sample 2, more essays samples to explore:.

The origin of this proverb  honesty is the best policy can be attributed to Sir Edwin Sandys. He was an official of Virginia Company who had used the phrase in one of his writings in the 1500s. It is an irrefutable fact that modernization and evolution are all by-products of universal progression. Moreover, honesty, which was very common in ancient times, is now as rare as hens’ teeth. In consonance with this, it can be easily apprehended that the breakthrough has not only encouraged external evolutions but has also blazingly impacted the consciences of beings.

The rareness of honesty cannot modify its ultimate consequence- actualizing an ethical character. Nature functions on the mechanism of giving and taking. Every development does have a cost, as the progression of technology leads to more cyber crimes. Universal progression has not only evolved individuals in terms of lifestyles but has also affected their mindsets and the basic values being rendered to them. The traits which were seen as unlikely earlier, like greed, dishonesty, etc., are now predominant.

Selfishness is the trait that has turned ways around even for honest personalities. It has become complex to understand the fact that honesty is ideally engraved, even if you are selfish. It is time to perceive how being honest will make your life full of grace, gratitude, and gratefulness. Keep the 3G's handy by being honest.

Salient benefits of preaching honesty:

  • Builds an established and didactic character,
  • Augments the persona of a “credible” person,
  • Attracts quality acquaintances rather than quantity,
  • Backs in being more prudent and disciplined,
  • Guides to be accountable for own, etc.

The ways for showcasing honesty can be tweaked, but in the long run, honesty must be practiced as a sole medium of paving the way through.

The essay topic is a resurgence of the old proverb reminding me what honesty means and what ceaseless good it brings. To me, honesty lies in everything that does not pinch my conscience. I feel it is cosmic and empowers individuals to build a bright future.

From the teachings of the past to the subsequent action, honesty was prevalent. It is for this reason that, as a child, I never experienced or witnessed the consequence of delinquency. Being true was colossal, and another way round was nefarious. Moral science was a perpetual life skill and, surprisingly, never seemed boring. I felt pride in speaking the truth, even when I got no rewards.

As opposed to that, kind, fragile, loving, gentle, honest, and likes of these emotions are weak words in the epoch that relies on quantification. Today, fastidiousness and other capricious ways, such as an over-exposure to the internet and the quantity of 'followers', have become the marshal fact to kindle happiness. Just like 'life' today is replaced with 'trend', the word 'Honesty' is often interchangeably used with expedience, making 'honesty is the best policy' no more than an obsolete idiom.

Honesty can be of many types and is used subjectively. Any modification that is untrue can be categorized as dishonesty. For example, using filters for online dating is also a form of cheating as you are not showing your real self; although, people don't find using the tiara or flowers as filters dishonest. Hence the word 'expedience' is more apt than using 'Honesty'. At the same time, a dog showering love on its caretaker is an honest embodiment.

Honesty reflects prudence, the integrity of character, and morality. And if what you are doing shows any of these, you have thought back for good!

Honesty is a virtue that has been valued and preached by moralists and religious institutions across the globe. The timeless adage, “Honesty is the best policy,” encapsulates the profound truth that sincerity and truthfulness are key to a successful and fulfilling life.

The Power of Honesty

Honesty is more than just avoiding lies; it represents integrity, straightforwardness, and trustworthiness. It underpins all human interactions, be it personal or professional. Honesty fosters trust and respect among individuals, thus strengthening relationships and promoting cooperation. In the absence of honesty, societies would crumble under the weight of suspicion and deceit.

Honesty in Personal Life

In personal life, honesty helps in maintaining authentic relationships. It allows individuals to be true to themselves and others, thereby promoting self-esteem and mental well-being. Dishonesty, on the other hand, often leads to stress, guilt, and broken relationships.

Honesty in Professional Life

In the professional sphere, honesty is equally crucial. It enhances one’s reputation, fosters trust among colleagues, and is key to long-term success. Businesses thrive on honesty, as it builds customer trust and loyalty, and promotes a positive work culture.

In conclusion, honesty is not just a moral obligation, but a necessity for a harmonious society. It is the cornerstone of all virtues and the foundation upon which trust and respect are built. Hence, it is indeed the best policy. As we navigate through life, let us remember that the path of honesty may not always be easy, but it is always rewarding.

500 Words Essay on Honesty Is the Best Policy

Honesty is a virtue that has been valued across cultures and time, embodying the principles of truthfulness and integrity. The maxim, “Honesty is the best policy,” encapsulates the profound significance that honesty holds in our lives. This essay explores the depth and breadth of this timeless adage, delving into its implications for personal growth, social relationships, and societal progress.

The Personal Sphere: Honesty as Self-Realization

At an individual level, honesty is a cornerstone of character development and self-realization. It promotes authenticity, allowing one to stay true to their own beliefs, values, and aspirations. When we are honest, we confront our weaknesses and acknowledge our strengths, fostering self-awareness and personal growth. It also instills a sense of responsibility, as honesty often requires courage to face the truth and accept its consequences.

The Social Sphere: Honesty as a Pillar of Trust

In the realm of social relationships, honesty is the bedrock of trust and mutual respect. It fosters open communication, reduces misunderstanding, and strengthens bonds. Honesty, by promoting transparency, ensures accountability and fairness, thereby creating a climate of trust. This trust is critical in all relationships, be it familial, friendly, or professional, as it forms the basis for cooperation and mutual support.

The Societal Sphere: Honesty as a Catalyst for Progress

At a societal level, honesty plays a pivotal role in fostering social harmony and progress. An honest society is one where the rule of law is respected, justice is upheld, and the rights of individuals are protected. Honesty in public life, particularly among leaders, promotes integrity and accountability, deterring corruption and promoting the efficient use of resources. This, in turn, fosters public trust in institutions, encouraging citizen participation and contributing to societal progress.

Challenges and the Way Forward

Despite the evident benefits of honesty, practicing it consistently can be challenging. The lure of short-term gains, fear of negative consequences, or societal pressures can often lead individuals to stray from the path of honesty. However, it is crucial to remember that the benefits of honesty are long-term and far-reaching, outweighing any temporary advantages gained from dishonesty.

Education plays a significant role in promoting honesty. By inculcating values of truthfulness and integrity from an early age, we can foster a culture of honesty. Furthermore, creating environments that reward honesty and discourage dishonesty, both at an institutional and societal level, can encourage individuals to follow the path of truth.

In conclusion, “Honesty is the best policy” is not just an adage, but a guiding principle that can lead to personal growth, enrich social relationships, and foster societal progress. While the path of honesty may be challenging, the rewards it yields are invaluable. As we navigate our way through the complexities of life, let us remember that the beacon of honesty can guide us towards a more fulfilling and meaningful existence.

Honesty is the best policy (or not) - U Chicago essay # 4

Anonymoussenior 17 / 133   Jan 3, 2011   #1 MODERATORS is there a way I can delete this and repost it under undergraduate admissions, I didn't realize it was on graduate admissions. Thanks. "Honesty is the best policy, but honesty won't get your friend free birthday cake at the diner." - Overheard in the city of Chicago Does society require constant honesty? Why is it (or why is it not) problematic to shift the truth in one's favor, even if the lie is seemingly harmless to others? If we can be "conveniently honest," what other virtues might we take more lightly? Inspired by Eleanor Easton, a second-year in the College Growing up, I never disputed the importance of being honest, after all I liked my nose and didn't want to end up like poor Pinocchio, but in recent years, I realized that lying is just as important as telling the truth. Over Thanksgiving break, I became a little too exuberant while playing Wii boxing and punched myself in the face. I can be a bit wild with my swings, but don't worry, I won. For days after I returned to school, I got questions like "Dude what happened to your jaw," "Are you okay," "Should we talk about your life at home," and "Did you get into some kind of outsiders brawl over the break." While all of these questions were valid proposals and a swollen jaw typically means something more than a Wii match gone wrong, who would ever admit to such an unfortunate outcome from a game and not a real sport? Naturally, I saved myself from extreme embarrassment by making up stories of ninjas abducting me in the middle of the night and an overzealous Black Friday shopper who fought me over a pair of $19.99 boots. My convenient lie proved to have no adverse affects and helped save me from having to repeatedly explain what really happened to me. Imagine my having to grudgingly retell my boxing match, complete with hand motions and the anticipated final blow not to the other player but into my own jaw- no thanks. If I had to do it over again would I still lie about how I got my injury? If I'm being honest, yes I would lie in a heartbeat, but maybe this time I would come up with a more colorful story. Does society require constant honesty? Absolutely not. If people only told the truth there would never be another person elected for any position in government, lawyers would be out of a job, and teachers wouldn't know what to say about some children's' behavior. Like Dave Van Ronk once said, "honesty is the cruelest game of all, because not only can you hurt someone - and hurt them to the bone - you can feel self-righteous about it at the same time." If people only told the truth more men would really tell their girlfriend about that new dress and moms would hear the truth about how that new recipe really taste. My boxing match, while a travesty itself, taught me it is truly okay to shift the truth in ones favor if its impact is harmless for others or me. While a society completely devoid of honesty could make all morals disappear and become something from a dream, sometimes lying can make life a bit more interesting. After all who needs honesty when I can get free cake from lying? Tear it apart I only have a few hours to make this perfect. Thanks.

alexis brandon 17 / 44   Jan 3, 2011   #2 Growing up, I never disputed the importance of being honest, after all I liked my nose and didn't did not. Don't use contractions want to end up like poor Pinocchio, but in recent years, I have realized that lying is just as important as telling the truth. ... "Did you get into some kind of outsiders make it more clear that you are alluding to a book brawl over the break." ... in the middle of the night and an overzealous Black Friday shopper who fought fighting me over a pair of $19.99 boots. ... and the anticipated final blow not to the other player but into my own jaw- no thanks. I like it however you did not answer the entire prompt, you didn't discuss other virtues people might take lightly. I think you should add a paragraph about that at the end.

bbish520 8 / 30   Jan 3, 2011   #3 I thought of doing this essay topic but then I didn't. I likes how you started off with your essay of liking your nose and not wanting to be like Pinocchio. If you want to keep adding to this essay maybe you can write from another form. An idea could be how lying can catch up to you in the future or how just one lie can produce many more in the future because as you tell one lie, you'll have to tell another lie to cover the lie that you have said before. But overall i liked it, maybe expand on the value part of the prompt would be good. Hope i helped!

ShadoPoig 11 / 36   Jan 3, 2011   #4 I read this a few days ago actually, but didn't comment on it because I thought it was great :D The biggest criticism I came up with was that maybe you didn't spend that much time on answering the questions in a deep manner. But then I realized that this is looking for your voice, which is extremely evident in this essay, and didn't comment on it. Personally, I think this is great. Humorous, personal, and to the point.

alexis brandon 17 / 44   Jan 3, 2011   #5 Telling a like lie is risky, not only for you but also for the other parties party involved. A lie can eventually come back with a vengeance, so that the one little white lie you told before snowballs into something much larger than you can not handle. Also , with lying, there is always the issue pressure of keeping up with the story stories that you told and having to repeatedly follow it up with additional lies. This is better, however, I still think you need to elaborate on other virtues.

Honesty is The Best Policy

8 Best Essays on “Honesty is The Best Policy”

Essay No. 01

It is possible that dishonesty may succeed for a short time, but honesty is sure to succeed better in the long run. This may be seen considering the career of students in schools and colleges, and of men engaged in the business of life. The student who cheats in an examination may, if he escapes detection, gain a few marks more than he would otherwise have got. But what is the probable result? He learns thereby to trust to dishonest means of passing his further examinations, and neglects hard work, the only sure means of success, Guess, even if his dishonesty remains undetected, he is likely to be outstripped by his more honest rival, and in addition, he exposes himself to the risk of an ignominious conviction, which will ruin his reputation and surely wound the hearts of parents and friends.

The effects of dishonesty are much the same in the case of clerks, merchants, government servants, and others. They may suddenly make themselves rich by dishonest means. But wealth so obtained is as a rule rapidly squandered, and to regain resource is likely to be had again to new acts of dishonesty. Thus the dishonest man lives all through his life in continual dread that his misdeeds may at any moment be revealed in the light of the day. Success at the beginning of his career only tempts him to become corrupt on a larger scale, and the end is generally disgrace and punishment.

So far we have been considering the question merely from the point of view of material success, and have seen that the dishonest man is very unlikely to succeed in life. But even if by some rare chance he should manage to escape detection to the end and die famous and wealthy, he must nevertheless all through his life suffer pain through fear of detection and consciousness of his own baseness. Had he been an honest man, he would probably have won still more wealth and honor in the eyes of the world and would have been spending the reproaches of a guilty conscience.

Honesty is the Best Policy

Here is an old saying that we should always tell the truth because that way we don’t have to remember what we said. Honesty is a virtue.

At one time or another, you might find yourself in a situation that requires you to tell one or two lies to avoid trouble. For some people, being honest is not that easy and such people might find themselves lying almost every day. Honesty is the best policy because no matter how good you are at telling lies, the truth will always come out.

Honest people are respected and trusted upon because they are known to stand by their truth. Without honesty, the world would be a bad and sad place to live in. people who constantly lie not only lose their friends but their reputation since no one likes to associate with dishonest characters.

It’s important to always tell the truth because this way we will lead a good and upright life. Some of the dishonest acts are telling lies, cheating, corruption, and smuggling. If all of us can stay away from these acts the world, would be a better place where we all will live in harmony and trust each other

Honesty is an important virtue that we should all aim to have. It helps to steer us in the right direction in life and helps us avoid criminal activities. An honest person is of good character and lives a satisfied and contented life because his conscience is clear.

An honest person’s character is dignified and graceful. You may achieve what you want by lying, but your actions will always haunt you. Be honest and everything will turn out well for you and you will come to realize that truth.

According to religious preachers and moralists, a man should be honest. He should be straightforward and just in his dealings with others, whatever the consequences of his conduct. He should not only resist the temptation to get rich quickly by being dishonest but be ready to face the suffering and loss that may be caused by honesty. This is the point of view of morality. The proverb, however, recommends honesty not as a moral ideal, but as a practical policy. We are called upon, to be honest, not because it is moral t0 be so, but because it is profitable to be so.

From one point of view, it is indeed true that honesty is the best policy. Consider, for example, a shopkeeper who, in order to get easy and quick profits, sells things at higher prices and cheats his customers in other ways. He may seem to prosper for some time, but, sooner or later, his customers are bound to see through his tricks and cease to patronize him. On the other hand, an honest shopkeeper is likely to flourish gradually and steadily, attracting more and more customers because of his reputation for honesty. It is true that several black marketers and they’re like have amassed huge fortunes. But they have to spend large chunks of their illicit gains on trying to prevent the detection of their crimes. Besides, they live in constant dread of being found out. It is generally true that dishonesty creates more problems than it solves.

`Honesty is the best policy is a national proverb of the British. It reflects their practical character. The British are nothing if not practical, and this quality enabled them to found a far-flung empire. In the colonies which they ruled they tried to be as honest and trustworthy as possible; at least they succeeded in creating this image of themselves in the minds of many people. If the British as a nation are affluent and influential today, it is in no small measure due to the fact that they try to live up to their national proverb.

Honesty is a very rare quality. Therefore it is greatly valued. It teaches us to be fair and square in our dealings. An honest person is not only respected but also trusted in society. He makes big gains and carves a place in the hearts of people around him. A man may become rich overnight by dishonest means but that richness does not last long. Honesty makes man self-confident and bold. He does not feel afraid of anybody. He moves about with his head held high in the air. Honesty is a long-termed investment. On the other dishonesty is a vice. It breeds corruption. It causes a moral fall of the people. The fruit of dishonesty is bitter. Dishonest persons suffer mentally. Outwardly they may look happy but inwardly they are not at peace with themselves. They are not contented with what they have. Their sins haunt them. No doubt the number of dishonest persons is far greater than those of honest persons, honesty still remains the best policy.

Without honesty, we would be termed characterless. Honesty is one of the building blocks of good character and character is what establishes who we are and what we are going to achieve. Honesty is the cornerstone of character. If one is found wanting in honesty, he will be found lacking in character as well.

Honesty is not always the easiest way out of a situation. However, for the brave-hearted who do not seek ways -out of situations, it is the only way to deal with a situation or a crisis. Often being honest can mean coming under the wrath of others. There might be the fear of a backlash but one must keep in mind that in the end truth always prevails and honesty is the best policy. It might not be the easiest thing: being honest, but it is the only thing to be.

Sometimes when faced with dire consequences one is inclined to be dishonest because it takes courage, to be honest. While dishonesty may provide an easy exit out of a sticky situation, it is just a matter of time before the lies catch up. When that happens, you lose your credibility and people mistrust you forever. A politician who fails to deliver on the promises he has made to the people during the election campaign loses the people’s faith and stands to lose the elections the next time around. It is difficult to trust someone you have lost faith in.

There are lies and then there are white lies. White lies are perceived as lies that are harmless hence people are often prone to using them. Being honest is difficult especially when you have something to lose like maybe a job, a promotion, the love and respect of a loved one. Taking the help of a white lie seems the easier way out. However, one lie leads to another, and, before long you are entangled in a web of lies that you find increasingly difficult to come out of. Honesty may be a difficult virtue to maintain but it is the only right thing to do.

However, situations don’t always call for brutal honesty. If a friend has bad breath, there is no reason to embarrass her with the truth by telling her she has bad breath. Situations like this, when the truth can hurt someone’s feelings call for prudence. A white lie said at this point to avoid hurting the friend’s feelings would not be in the best interests of the friend. The best way to deal with this situation would be to play down the brutality of the truth. Instead of outright saying,” hey your breath smells awful’ one could instead say “hey nothing a little mint won’t cure”.

The truth however hard to say must be adhered to always. In the long run, it is the best policy. Over a period of time, one will gain a reputation for being honest. And this will prove to be the building block of success. An honest person will be sought for his opinion. An honest man will always receive more responsibility at home and at work. One must remember always that, “To err is human and to forgive divine”. So when you have erred coming clean is the only option. You may be punished for it, you might have to bear the consequences of it, but if you are honest you will earn the forgiveness and respect of those around you. Honesty is undoubtedly the best policy.

The wise man who coined the saying that ‘honesty is the best policy, was in every way a very sensible person. The use of the word ‘policy’ gave this saying flexibility, in that a person during the course of his life could adapt different ways if he felt that honesty was not beneficial to his interests. A policy is changeable, unlike a principle that is not. You cannot change the principle even if it causes loss. You suffer and even lay down your life for a principle. On the other hand, policy 1s just a matter of convenience. It is more businesslike and more inclined to think in terms of profit and loss.

Should then honesty restrict itself to just being a policy or should it be made into a principle 2. The answer to this question is that honesty should be made into a principle of life. In the long run, honesty proves to be the best wealth. A person possessing it acquires the strength of character and high esteem in the eyes of society.

Honesty is also necessary for real happiness. Dishonesty may bring wealth and influence but it can never make a person happy. At no point in his life will a dishonest person be able to free himself from the consequences of his actions. Hence he will never be truly happy and content. Fear of being caught and punished for his dishonest acts haunts him and he is never totally free from it.

Similarly, a public servant needs honesty. You cannot become a great leader without honesty. This virtue gives him the strength to do his duty towards the citizens of the country. As a dishonest leader, you may become rich and powerful. But there is every possibility that your actions will catch up with you and make you suffer. The cloud of dishonesty may hide the Sun of honesty for a period of time. It cannot however hide it forever. This proves the greatness of honesty from which no one can escape.

It has been truly said, “Honesty is the best policy”. We should always be sincere in the work we do. It is, nevertheless, very difficult to accept honest means of livelihood. It is frequently seen that people generally take up unfair ways to become rich. On the other hand, those who pursue the path of honesty are frequently seen stressed in life to satisfy their meager needs. All these might have a bad effect on the nerves of honest people and they might take to other ways to earn by unfair ways. But, we should keep in mind that money earned by unfair means never brings joy.

A man who adopts truthful ways to earn his livelihood might spend a life of poverty but he is always contented. He is far superior to an affluent person who has collected a lot of wealth by taking up fraudulent means. Gandhi Ji always preached to us to lead a happy and contented life by being truthful. At present, our society has been trapped by fraudulent people, who in just a few years want to become rich.

Thus, we can see it is really difficult to lead an honest life among the fraudulent people all around. In spite of so many fraudulent people, honest men still thrive and lead their life with honest means of livelihood .

Trust and faith are two important virtues essential for healthy human relationships. That is so, because of our many limitations. Despite the remarkable progress, we have made so far in acquiring knowledge, much of our potential is unknown to us, and many of our shortcomings remain unconquered. We can be easily deceived, and since deceptions cannot be easily detected beforehand, they create friction in our relationships with others. Moreover, deceptions undermine our sense of security and threaten our very survival. Honesty and sincerity are the qualities necessary to safeguard ourselves against insecurity and should indeed be the foundations of our relations with others.

Annie Hamilton’s Courtside Adventure

For a fleeting moment, she was the queen of Madison Square Garden.

In the foreground, the back of a young woman’s head. In the background, large, we see a Jumbotron-like screen with her face on it.

By Annie Hamilton

Madison Square Garden went very quiet when my face appeared on the giant screen above center court. The silence was noticeable. A few seconds earlier, Kenan Thompson’s face had brought down the house.

It wasn’t like anyone gasped or got angry — no one seemed taken aback. It was just that no one knew who the hell I was. And why should they? I’m not famous. I had no right to be up there in the first place.

Still, it was hard not to take it personally. Eighteen thousand people — New Yorkers, no less — had decided to silence their cheers. Eighteen thousand people had agreed, as one, to reject me.

The chyron below my face on the GardenVision screen read: “Actor.” That hurt, because I no longer think of myself as just an actor. It also hurt because the subhead read: “‘The Wolf of Snow Hollow .’” Solid movie — I mean no disrespect — but it’s just that I die within the first three minutes.

At 4:45 p.m. that day, my manager, Harry, sent me a text: “Is boyfriend still here?”

I thought he wanted to hang out with us, which I didn’t feel like doing, so I considered lying. I let my typing bubbles go … and I let them go away. Harry texted again: “I have two extra courtside tickets to the Knicks game.” Honesty is the way, etc.

I’ve done my fair share of sitting courtside. I know that sitting courtside is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I can’t think of a more annoying fact, but I’ll come clean: I’ve sat courtside upward of 30 times. What can I say? I’m a good guest.

But this time, I wouldn’t be a guest. This time, Harry told me, the tickets would be under my name.

My boyfriend and I arrived 10 minutes late. A group of string players was in the throes of a gentle version of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” As we waited in the tunnel, an old-timer scowled at us for not keeping still while the anthem played. He had his hand on his heart; I put my hand on my heart. I wanted to fit in. I was anxious.

A guide led us to our seats. He said he worked for the Knicks, but when I told him that two players on the team had been college roommates , he couldn’t believe it. He also couldn’t believe that the pair of empty seats next to Kenan Thompson, the beloved “Saturday Night Live” star, were actually our seats. As the Knicks and the Memphis Grizzlies stepped onto the court, the guide disappeared, telling us that his supervisor would help us get it sorted out.

My boyfriend and I were standing there like schmucks as the game got started. I sent a text to the “contact” that my manager had given me: “Should we leave?”

The contact texted back: “oh my god no.” In a follow-up, he wrote that the seats next to Kenan were indeed ours. So we sat down.

Although I had a serious case of dry mouth, of absolute parchment, I tried to make small talk with Kenan. I wanted him to know that I was there for the love of the game. I’m not one of those girls who’s there for the clout.

It made no sense for me to try to prove this to Kenan, because it wasn’t true. I’m not not a Knicks fan, but I’ve been a dedicated follower of the Los Angeles Clippers for years. And I do like clout.

Anyway, I mentioned the roommate thing. Kenan quipped back: “That’s why they play so well together.” And I realized that my fun fact — the one I had brought along for this very purpose — was old news to a real Knicks fan.

I was parched. I was parched as hell. I rummaged through my bag for anything I could put in my mouth. I needed to prompt the fluids inside of there.

In the middle of my rummaging, a young woman came over to me and my boyfriend. She crouched low, smiling and looking only at him. I tried to hear what she was saying, but I couldn’t make out a word.

I was the ticket holder. But my boyfriend is an actor — and he had been on a big show this past year, so I understood. When you’re on Celebrity Row, the guy on the big show doesn’t count as a mere plus-one.

A camera crew hurried over. My boyfriend whispered in my ear, “I think I’m about to be on the Jumbotron?” Just then the woman who had refused to look at me shouted: “Annie! You’re on B Cam!”

I didn’t know what “B Cam” meant. Maybe it was something like: “Be a good girlfriend and look adoringly at your man, so we can get B-roll footage of your undying support.”

Before I could get into character, Kenan leaned over and sweetly gave me and my boyfriend a piece of advice: “Grab your drink. Pick something to do.”

“It’s not me they want up there!” I shouted.

Kenan looked momentarily startled. But when the cameraman homed in on him for his GardenVision cameo, he looked so at ease. What a pro. The place went nuts.

The cameramen swung back to my boyfriend. I heard cheers. I looked up. A montage of my boyfriend on the TV show was on the big screen. And when it ended, there he was, on the GardenVision, for all to see.

I saw a sliver of myself next to him. I managed a brief “Woooo!” and slithered away. I didn’t actually want to be projected to the Madison Square Garden crowd as a girlfriend.

Then the young lady moved the camera crew closer to me.

“OK, Annie — let’s go !”

I didn’t understand what was happening. What was happening? Had I not done a good enough job of supporting my boyfriend? I tried another “Wooo.” Nothing came out of my mouth. I froze.

“Smile, Annie! Smile! Smile and wave! Smile and wave!”

On either side of the young lady were four angry cameramen. One of them shouted, “You could look up!”

I thought it would be embarrassing to look up. I didn’t want the people of Madison Square Garden to see me checking out me. I didn’t want the people of Madison Square Garden to see how vain I could be. I didn’t want to be seen.

A still photographer, crouched at the cameramen’s feet, was chuckling. He chuckled and chuckled. It was sweet, actually, and it was all I needed to come back down to earth. I smiled. I waved. I did my “huh” face and waved again. It was done. I’d get an Instagram post out of it. Embarrassment is important to me.

As the game went on, I couldn’t take my eyes off the Real Housewife who was sitting next to Julianne Moore’s husband on the other side of the court. She looked happy. She looked happy when she was on the big screen, and she looked happy when she wasn’t. I wondered how she did it.
