Question 1. Your house help’s daughter is same age as yours. However, she doesn’t go to school and helps her mother in mopping and washing utensils. This makes you extremely sad. Write a diary entry about your feelings. (100-150 words) Answer: Dear Diary, Today, I am very thoughtful and concerned about the child labour in our society. Childhood is considered as the best period for growth and development of children. But even today, many children have to work in order to support their families. As I see daily, my house help’s daughter who is the same age as mine, does not go to school. Instead she helps her mother in mopping and washing utensils.

I think, how callous we, human beings are! We employ the children to work in factories, homes, etc. In the age of receiving education, these children burn their blood in doing labour in various workplaces where they face harsh arguments and mean behaviour. Sometimes, they are forced to work at places Which are unhygienic in nature. Sometimes, due to poverty their parents push them into the hell where they remain ill-fed, ill-clad and ill-sheltered. Their filthy surroundings cause them to fall victims of fatal diseases. Little children are often seen selling in the streets or working quietly on domestic chores within the high walls of homes.

Child labour is a real stigma on the society and in our country. This is a human right issue of immense sensitivity. So, in order to eliminate this evil from the society, we all have to come together and let the children of our country prosper. Child labour is a criminal offence in our country. So, the laws should be implemented honestly. The government should punish those who employ children at homes, in factories, etc.

Earlier, I used to live in the tree once behind your house, but now it fell down. My forefathers lived in the trees in the park across which now remains treeless. If all trees on the earth are cut, even human beings cannot survive…” As the squirrel said these, I realised the truth that humans don’t think of these creatures when they cut down trees.

Vinita immediately apologised to her and I tried to pacify Shyama but it was of no use. It was as if she* was waiting for something of that sort to happen so that she could give vent to her fury. Today, I got to know a lot of things about children belonging to the weaker sections of the society. How alive and enthusiastic they are! They welcomed me with cheers. Today’s class was more or less an introductory session wherein I interacted with the kids and came to know of their likes and dislikes. One striking thing about them was that they are all smart in one way or the other, and have the thirst for knowledge. Each one is ambitious -and indeed, they should be. What bounced me off was their nationalist spirit with which they declared their desire to contribute for the economic development of the country and do away with poverty. Imme¬diately, my visit to Taj Mahal last week came to my mind. The visit has left a lasting impression in my mind, so exquisitely beautiful the monument is!

Taj Mahal – the pride of India; one of the world heritage sites that has taken Indian’s tourism to the pinnacle of the glory. Till I visited the Taj Mahal, I never had a strong opinion about its beauty and worth. I have always seen the monument as a, picture and that had always stayed in my mind’s eye whenever I think of Taj Mahal. I have read about it as the finest piece of Mughal architecture. But when I saw it in real, I felt that it is indeed a heavenly structure. Shahjahan’s love for his wife is etched in each and every inch of the monument. I analysed its beauty in every sense. First, the serenity of the atmosphere in which it is located. Then the river bank and the gardens to enhance the beauty of the mausoleum. And beyond all these are the ivory, white marble of the structure topped by a large dome, which is the most spectacular feature of the structure. I spent quite sometime in enjoying the interior of the structure where there was only work of precious and semi-precious gemstones. At the exterior complex as well, there were plant motifs, reflective tiles and lattices, the delicacy of intricate piece work. No wonder, Taj Mahal is the symbol of love!

I attended the event with my mother and father. The event took place in the school auditorium at 4 p.m. The event started with a speech from the Principal and the choir’s performance. Then came the various plays, dance performances and musicals. Everyone knew not to cheat, but of course two students were willing to take the risk. They were caught. Their papers were seized and were ordered to get up and move to the Principal’s room for further action. Upon hearing this, one of them got a panic attack. The invigilator called another invigilator, then the class teacher. Soon, it was chaos. Everyone was distracted by the situation.

If you want to immerse a reader in an essay or story, there’s no better way to do it than with a crisp, vivid descriptive paragraph. These paragraphs are best when you let your creativity take control, experimenting with structure and content and using unusual, striking phrases to hook your reader’s attention. Whether you’re describing a person, place, or thing, your paragraph should make your reader feel like they’re right there with you or your characters, experiencing the moment firsthand.

Sample Paragraphs

how to write a descriptive paragraph class 9

Describing a Person

Step 1 Start your paragraph with a general topic sentence that introduces the person.

“Mr. Bixler was the tallest person I’d ever seen.” “Melanie’s hair is the biggest thing about her.” “To understand John’s thoughts, all you had to do was look at his hands. They never stopped moving.”

Step 2 Focus on the most striking part of their appearance first.

  • “I didn’t usually notice people’s skin, but Natasha’s glowed. It was almost alien. Night could be falling, or we could be sitting in a dark classroom, and I’d still see her out of the corner of my eye, faintly golden.”
  • “His arms looked too long for his body, and disproportionately muscular, like pale twin boa constrictors.”

Step 3 Focus on physical details that hint at the person’s personality.

Showing Personality through Physical Description

Kindness or friendliness: “He had a tendency to slope his back and shoulders to smile right in my eyes.”

Rudeness: “He towered over everyone else in the room, staring over everyone’s heads as though looking for something more interesting.”

Ambition: “She walked with energy that seemed to start in her legs, striding purposefully, and went all the way up through her hair, which swept behind her in a smooth ponytail.”

Step 4 Fill in any last details to give a good general picture.

  • To describe a face, for example, you could write, “Her nose and her two front teeth were just slightly crooked. She was constantly pulling her long hair forward and throwing it back again, blinking her bangs out of her eyes like she had no idea how they’d gotten there.”
  • To describe someone’s body or clothing, you might write, “He was a big guy, but carried himself like he wanted to apologize for it. He hunched his shoulders and bent his neck over his phone, and wore gray clothes so he could blend into the walls.”
  • Even the general details you’re describing should only be mentioned if they add insight into the person or character’s personality or impression. For example, if their eye color doesn’t hint at any deeper part of them, you don’t have to include it.

Step 5 Use figurative language and strong adjectives throughout your paragraph.

Using Figurative Language

Simile: a comparison between two things using “like” or “as.” Ex. “Her baby’s ears were as tiny and delicate as seashells.”

Metaphor: using a word or phrase with an object, action or person that it can’t literally apply to. Ex. “In class, Mrs. Sherman was an actress. She flew around the room and boomed out each story we read, using different voices and facial expression for every character.”

Step 6 End the paragraph with a resonant description or conclusion.

  • “I’d known Lulu for years, but I’d never seen her wear a pair of shoes. In the summer, I’d watch the soles of her feet turn black and callused from the asphalt, which baked so hot under the sun it would let off waves of steam. It had to burn, but she just rose up on her tiptoes and laughed.”
  • “In spite of the loud voice, the confident set of his shoulders, and the easy smile, Henry was the saddest person I’d ever met.”

Writing about an Object

Step 1 Give an idea of the size and general shape of the object.

  • “She’d been wearing the necklace for so long, the chain seemed to blend into her skin. It was thin and the jewel was very small, sitting at the exact center beneath the dip in her collarbone.”
  • “The water bottle lay on its side in the dirt, just off the main path, so dented that you could barely tell what its original shape had been.”

Step 2 Describe its sensory details, like color, texture, or taste.

Using Sensory Details

Sight: “The lightbulb was incredibly powerful, throwing off a blaze so bright it was almost violet.”

Sound: “The bag crinkled sharply when I opened it.”

Touch: “The wood of the tree was rough, almost biting, scratching her hand when she brushed against the trunk by accident.”

Taste: “The pizza was garlicky and so salty that he finished his whole glass of soda after just one piece.”

Smell: “When they opened the box, the faded, pungent scent of old paper lifted out.”

Step 3 Talk about what it’s used for to give a sense of its purpose.

  • For example, you could say, “It was her lucky pencil, the one she always used for tests, and she kept it in a separate section of her backpack for that reason. She sharpened it slowly with her personal handheld sharpener, then carefully swept the shavings into the trash.”

Step 4 End by telling or showing how the object is significant, depending on your tone.

  • For example, you could show the importance by writing, “He took his watch off in the bathroom every night, cleaned it gently with a wet tissue, and placed it on a small cloth on his bedside table.”
  • For a more direct option, you could write, “The journal had been passed down by her grandmother to her mother and finally to Katie. It was the oldest thing she’d ever owned, and the thing she loved the most.”

Writing a Descriptive Paragraph About a Place

Step 1 Start by describing the first thing that strikes you about the place.

“It wasn’t just that the buildings were tall— they were, they shot straight from the ground into the clouds and seemed to go for miles —but that they were so clean, almost transparent. It was like the towers stretched up so high that they became more air than steel.”

“The beach was empty, but you could tell it usually wasn’t. There was trash everywhere, abandoned towels, tipped over coolers, even a whole umbrella, unfurled, sticking out of a hole in the ground. ”

Step 2 Highlight small place details to make your description interesting.

  • “The river ran so high along its banks that it sloshed over the sides of the walls, spilling brown water into the streets, but no one seemed to view this with alarm. I watched a man ride his bike just along the wall, speeding straight through the biggest puddles.”
  • “The neighborhood was perfectly suburban, but sat right across the two-lane road from miles of sprawling cornfields, green arms sifting through the breeze, punctured here and there by broken-down farm houses.”

Step 3 Use surprising, exotic language to make the place come to life.

  • For example, in The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood describes a room as “A chair, a table, a lamp. Above, on the white ceiling, a relief ornament in the shape of a wreath and in the centre of it a blank space, plastered over, like the place in a face where the eye has been taken out.”

Step 4 Add sensory details to appeal to your sense of scent, touch, and sound.

  • For example, you could write, “He couldn’t remember the last time the house had been quiet. Someone was always flying up or down the stairs in heavy, clomping boots, peeling open the refrigerator door, blaring a baseball game on the radio or yelling to turn it off again.”

Step 5 Write about how you or your character react to the place.

  • “Standing there at the foot of the Rockies, seeing mountains for the first time, it was like the whole world was shrinking, especially me. It made me dizzy, how small I had become.”
  • “The rain slammed down around them, standing at the bus stop in a dim yellow circle of light. She tugged her coat closer, feeling the chill in her fingers and watched him try to talk over the sound of the water.”

Step 6 Include only the most important details so you don’t bog your reader down.

5 ft – black complexion – black hair – 30 years old – high school passed – married  – two children – kind, helpful – love plants – environmentalist – use bio compost

Descriptive paragraph Example

Our gardener is a 30 year old man from Madhya Pradesh. We call him Ramu Kaka. He is only five feet tall and has a black complexion. His hair is also jet black. He hails from a small village and came to Pune 10 years ago looking for work. He has been taking care of our garden for 2 years. Everyone in my family likes him very much. He is such a kind and helpful person. He also loves plants a lot. You can ask him anything about plants and he will answer your questions readily. Whenever he goes to his native place, he brings with him a lot of plants. He is quite passionate about conserving the environment too. He is against using chemical fertilizers. Instead, he uses bio compost which he himself makes using waste from our kitchen. Ramu Kaka is married with two children. He has completed high school but he could not study any further due to financial problems in his family.

student image

Remember the time as a kid when we used to tell ghost stories with dramatic effects during power cuts or the stories our parents, and grandparents used to tell us? We would usually get lost in the world the storyteller has created with words.

In the writing section, the descriptive paragraph is the same but instead of telling, here, we will talk about writing descriptions. This writing piece will cover what a descriptive paragraph is along with its types and examples.

What is a Descriptive Paragraph?

The introduction might have given you an idea of what a descriptive paragraph is. A descriptive paragraph is a written description that will help any reader create a clear and detailed image of the event, person, place, or object. A description can be in both written and verbal form.

A well-crafted descriptive writing is intended to appeal to the reader’s senses creating a well-defined image in their mind. The writer needs to use their sensory information to make the reader feel a required connection with the described event. To write a descriptive paragraph, you must study your topic closely, make a list of the details you observe, and organize those details into a logical structure.

People exchange gifts, which signifies love and respect for their relatives and friends. All the houses are illuminated with diyas and candles. Children burn crackers and fireworks which look very beautiful. People pray to Goddess Laxmi for the well-being of their family and businesses.

How to Write a Well-drafted Descriptive Paragraph?

The reader must be able to get a mental image of the event, person, place, object, or situation while reading the paragraphs. There are a few points one needs to keep in mind to write a descriptive paragraph.

  • Choose a catchy and interesting title to grab the reader’s attention.
  • Before you begin writing, try to brainstorm ideas on how you can describe the event or person and try to think about what you see, hear, feel, taste, and smell i.e. sensory information.
  • Using vivid, detailed, and descriptive language will help the reader in forming a clear mental image.
  • Use passive voice to describe scientific, technical writing, and lab reports.
  • Be concise and specific
  • Use metaphors and similes
  • Try not to put your personal opinion while describing any event or situation.
  • Use a concluding sentence that circles back to the topic's significance.
  • Arrange the details in a sequence that makes sense for your topic.
  • If you get stuck, read model descriptive paragraphs for insight, and don't be afraid to experiment with different arrangements.

In your final draft, the details should follow a logical pattern, with each sentence connecting to the sentences that come before and after it.

What is a Descriptive Paragraph and its examples?

Any written description that helps the reader develop clear and in-detail visuals of any person, event, object, or place. It can be in both verbal and written form. Here is an example describing exam day blunder to help you understand it better.

For example,

I usually take great care to prepare for my exams. But yesterday, I made an unthinkable blunder. I reached the school feeling prepared and confident for my Mathematics exam. When I met some of my classmates, I was astonished to find that they were all revising for the English exam! The astonishment turned into fear and panic when I realized that I had gotten it all wrong. I borrowed my friend’s English reader and began reading up chapters and looking up questions. When the bell rang for us to assemble in our respective exam centers, I was shaking with nervousness. But, I took a deep breath, calmed myself down, and sat down for the exam. The question paper turned out to be easy, and I sighed in relief.

Descriptive Paragraph Writing Class 9 CBSE Format, Topics, Examples, Samples

Solved examples.

1. Write a descriptive paragraph, in

about 100-150 words, on ‘A Friendly Clown’. Ans. A FRIENDLY CLOWN

one corner of my dresser, sits a smiling toy clown on a tiny unicycle–a gift I

received last Christmas from my close friend. The clown’s short yellow hair,

made of yarn, covers its ears but is parted above the eyes. The blue eyes are

outlined in black with thin, dark lashes flowing from the brows. ft has

cherry-red cheeks, nose, and lips, and its broad grin disappears into the wide,

white ruffle around its neck. The clown wears a fluffy, two-tone nylon costume.

The left side of the outfit is light blue, and the right side is red. The two

colors merge in a dark line that runs down the center of the small outfit.

Surrounding its ankles and disguising its long black shoes, are big pink bows.

The white spokes on the wheels of the unicycle gather in the center and expand

to the black tire so that the wheel somewhat resembles the inner half of a

grapefruit. The clown and unicycle together stand about a foot high. As a

cherished gift from my good friend Tran, this colorful figure greets me with a

smile every time I enter my room.

2. Write a descriptive paragraph, in

about 100450 words, on ‘Gregory—My Pet Cat’.

Ans. GREGORY—MY PET CAT

is my beautiful grey Persian cat. He walks with pride and grace, performing a

dance of disdain as he slowly lifts and lowers each paw with the delicacy of a

ballet dancer. His pride, however, does not extend to his appearance, for he

spends most of his time indoors, watching television and growing fat. He enjoys

TV commercials, especially those for Meow Mix and 9 Lives. His familiarity with

cat food commercials has led him to reject generic brands of cat food in favor

of only the most expensive brands. Gregory is as finicky about visitors as he

is about what he eats—befriending some and repelling others. He may snuggle up

against your ankle, begging to be petted, or he may imitate a skunk and stain

your favorite trousers. Gregory does not do this to establish his territory,

as many cat experts think, but to humiliate me because he is jealous of- my

friends. After my guests have fled, I look at the old fleabag snoozing and

smiling to himself in front of the television set, and I have to forgive him

for his obnoxious, but endearing habits.

3. Write a descriptive paragraph, in

about 100-150 words, about the house of your dreams. You can invent your own

Ans. THE HOUSE OF MY DREAMS

is my dream house. It’s one-story house built in a spacious property. There is

a front yard with different kinds of plants with a small path to go inside the

house. The main door is a two-sided wooden door. Once you open the doors, you

meet a wall with a mirror which is separated right and left wing of the nose. If

you go to the right wing, you will directly go to the living room There welcome

my guests. Next to the living room, you can find a guest room and a restroom.

The guest room is facing to a part of swimming pool. The left wing is a way to

kitchen and dining room. In the hall to the kitchen and dining room, you can

find a door to my family main room. When you open the door, there is a glass

hall towards the children’s room. if we go through the glass hail from the

guest room, you can find my room facing the swimming pool. And the glass hail

is also connecting my room on the right wing and dining room on the left wing.

There is a folded-glass door at the backyard where you can find swimming pool

right after you open the glass door. A small at made of stones is next to the

pool for people to go to a gazebo near the pool for gathering and relaxing. You

can see my Jacuzzi in my room from the pool because die Jacuzzi is in open area

next to my room.

                      ANSWER

[DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH]

1 . THE BLOND GUITAR

My most valuable possession is an old, slightly warped blond guitar—the first

instrument I taught myself how to play. It’s nothing fancy, just a Madeira folk

guitar, all scuffed and scratched and fingerprinted. At the top is a bramble of

copper-wound strings, each one hooked through the eye of a silver tuning key.

The strings are stretched down a long, slim neck, its frets tarnished, the wood

worn by years of fingers pressing chords and picking notes. The body of the

Madeira is shaped like an enormous yellow pear, one that was slightly damaged in

shipping. The blond wood has been chipped and gouged to gray, particularly

where the pick guard fell off years ago. No, its not a beautiful instrument,

but it still lets me make music, and for that I will always treasure it.

2. THE KITCHEN

The kitchen held our lives together. My mother worked in it all day long, we ate in it almost all meals except the breakfast, I did my homework and first writing

at the kitchen table, and in winter, I often had a bed made up for me on three

kitchen chairs near the stove. On the wall, just over the table, hung a long

horizontal mirror that sloped to a ship’s prow at each end and was lined in

cherry wood. It took up the whole wall, and drew every object in the kitchen to

itself. The walls were a fiercely speckled whitewash, so often re-whitened by

my father in slack seasons that the paint looked as if it had been squeezed and

cracked into the walls. A large electric bulb hung down the center of the

kitchen at the end of a chain that had been hooked into the ceiling; the old

gas ring and key still jutted out of the wall like antlers. In the corner, next

to the toilet, was the sink at which we washed, and the square tube in which my

mother did our clothes. Above it, tacked to the shelf on which were pleasantly

ranged square, blue-bordered white sugar and spice jars, hung calendars from

the National Bank and the Workmen’s Circle; receipts for the payment of

insurance premiums, and household bills on a spindle; two little boxes engraved

with Hindi letters.

INSPIRING TEACHER

There are some inspiring teachers in my life. But the one whom I am going to tell you about is really a great teacher for me. His name is Shyam Sagar. He was my lecturer in Sanskrit Literature, University of Delhi. He was the third person

who has the highest knowledge of Sanskrit linguistic in the world. His

specialty was in calligraphy and philosophy. He doesn’t have a high education

title. In fact, he was a truck driver in Tamil Nadu before he was appointed to

be a guest lecturer in University of Delhi. When we saw him for the first time,

he didn’t look like a lecturer. He was carrying a black plastic bag and wore a

simple outfit. What impressed us at that time was that he was talking as if we

had watched an English movie! He didn’t have many rules in his class but he

knew how to attract us to study more and more. Every time we studied

linguistic, he let us feel and try the words, so we had no doubt in pronouncing

them. He was able to let us understand phrases matching to situations and Tamil culture. His humble heart and persistence made us respect him more. As a result, we always tried our best in his class because we did not want to

disappoint him. I have been admired by his attitude towards his students, and I

try to model him, yet I’m still learning.

4. MY FAVOURITE PLACE

My favorite place which is important to me is my countryside house. I have very bright impressions and memories related to it. That is the place where I have grown up, met my friends and where I have spent almost all my life.

It is a big house with a yard. In summer, there are a lot of flowers which make

the outlook beautiful In the backyard, there is a “place where I love to

spend time, lying in hammock and dreaming under the tree.

Inside the house, there is a kitchen, a big living room, where you can invite guests, friends and chat with them, watch TV and relax. Next to the living room there are rooms, which are always sunlit during daytime, so you wake up with a very good mood in the morning. The house has a very homely atmosphere I will always like this place, because I have many good, pleasant memories and feelings about it.

5. MY HOMETOWN

grew up in Shimla which is located in the state of Himachal Pradesh in the

northern part of India. Large, old oak trees and green lawns, surrounded by

hills covered in pine trees formed my neighborhood. The streets were quiet,

with only the sound of birds singing and some cars passing every once in a

while. During the cold, snowy winters, most people stayed inside, and one could

smell wood burning in fireplaces and see smoke coming out of chimneys. In

summer, one could see people walking dogs or jogging, smell cut-fresh grass,

and see squirrels jumping from tree to tree. My hometown made me feel secure

and comfortable. Now, I usually visit Shimla once a year. Not a lot has changed

except now there are more people, more traffic, and more places to go, such as

shopping malls and restaurants. I feel nostalgic when I think about Shimla.

6. MY LOVING SISTER

has a family, but only few are lucky to have an inspiring, strong and caring

sister like mine. My sister’s name is Radhika Kapoor. My sister is currently staying

with her friend’s family in Patel Nagar as she is pursuing an advanced academic

program. She works her brain off to meet deadlines, produce new ideas, and on

top of that she tries to fit time in her busy schedule every night to call or

text us. For , engineering, she has

sacrificed so much to be the best. Although engineering doesn’t define her,

what she loves about it is that it’s a challenge she has to face. Radhika has

everything that a little sister would have wanted. She’s understanding,

intelligent, funny, and charismatic. Radhika brings solution to every problem.

regardless the situation. My sister is my teacher. She guides me through my

life. Radhika always advises me on what to be avoided and what would bring

benefits to me. Radhika is sincere to everyone and herself. I love my sister

and no one can do anything. to separate us. I hope that someday I can take good

care of her as she has cared for me.

MY GRANDMOTHER

person I will always remember is my grandmother, because she was the most

amazing person I had ever known. My grandmother was a person everyone wanted to

be around, she always put a smile on our faces without even trying. She had the

finniest laugh and was always cracking jokes which was probably the reason why

we were always laughing. My grandma would help anyone no matter hat the situation was even if it meant going

out of her way to help. She was very caring and always had a welcoming home for

us; my cousins and I always liked staying with her on the weekends.

My grandma was like my best friend. I could talk to her about anything, and she

knew exactly how to solve my problems. She also used to make the best idlis and

payasam. I always looked forward to Diwali walking into her house, smelling all

the warm food, waiting for us. I will always cherish all the memories I had

with my grandma. She raised me to be a better person and to look at things in a

positive way. She was a strong, loving, caring, funny woman and had many things

to give to others. An one who met her will cherish forever.

FRIEND-MY CHAMP

Mohan has been a good friend of mine for some

years now. Our friendship goes all the way hack to when we first met in primary

school. Although we were very young and seemed to not have too much in common,

we somehow found some reasons to bond and create a friendship. It is a

friendship that has become stronger over the time and through our shared life

experiences. He is my exact opposite in terms of physical attributes. He is

taller than me with dark hair and black eyes. He also has better fashion sense

than I have with his standard jean pants and black shirt. Black is his

favorite color, so it tends to show up in most of his clothes. He is also

more sociable than I am. Because of his talent for drawing, he often attracts

people to look at his 3D designs on his laptop. He has a creative mind, so he

has a lot of projects that he works on whenever he has some free time. He is

the friend that I come to when I feel troubled or pressured. It is his voice of

reason that helps me calm down and reminds me to remain composed at all times.

He is my best friend because he cares about me and works on our friendship with

me. I can only hope that we will be friends forever.

9. PLEASURES OF WATCHING A

combines the pleasures of radio and cinema. It has become the most popular

means of entertainment as it provides variety of entertainment at a minimum

cost. Every home has a TV nowadays. The facility of cable network has increased

the pleasures of television. Now we have hundreds of channels available to us.

Each person can watch programs of his choice. Instant and live coverage of

sports items, films and film-based programs, TV serials and soap operas are

the sort of programs which are liked the most. Television watching is

entertaining as well as informative. Programs on current affairs enlighten

us. However, like every invention of science, TV has darker aspects also.

Excessive TV watching proves harmful. So, let us be moderate in enjoying the

pleasures of television.

                               REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATION

our country celebrated its Republic Day on 26th January. i could not go to India Gate lawns to watch the parade of

different states. Therefore, I had to sit in front of my TV I was surprised at

the smart uniforms and the enthusiasm of different battalions of ail the three

branches of the forces. They were followed by the young brave children who

seemed to be very happy on the elephants as all of them had received bravery

awards. The tableau of the states was the main attraction as the colorful artists

presented the dances of their states with a message. The people gathered there,

were impressed by the school children who presented a number of items. I also

wanted to join them. Afterward, I realised that on TV I was only able to

how to write a descriptive paragraph class 9

  • B.A., American Studies, Yale University

A descriptive paragraph is a focused and detail-rich account of a specific topic. Paragraphs in this style often have a concrete focus—the sound of a waterfall, the stench of a skunk's spray—but can also convey something abstract, such as an emotion or a memory. Some descriptive paragraphs do both. These paragraphs help readers  feel  and  sense  the details that the writer wants to convey.

To write a descriptive paragraph, you must study your topic closely, make a list of the details you observe, and organize those details into a logical structure.

Finding a Topic

The first step in writing a strong descriptive paragraph is identifying your topic . If you received a specific assignment or already have a topic in mind, you can skip this step. If not, it's time to start brainstorming.

Personal belongings and familiar locations are useful topics. Subjects that you care about and know well often make for rich, multilayered descriptions. Another good choice is an object that at first glance doesn't seem to warrant much description, like a spatula or a pack of gum. These seemingly innocuous objects take on entirely unexpected dimensions and meanings when captured in a well-crafted descriptive paragraph.

Before you finalize your choice, consider the goal of your descriptive paragraph. If you're writing description for description's sake, you're free to choose any topic you can think of, but many descriptive paragraphs are part of a larger project, such as a personal narrative or an application essay. Make sure the topic of your descriptive paragraph aligns with the broader goal of the project.

Examining and Exploring Your Topic

After you've selected a topic, the real fun begins: studying the details. Spend time closely examining the subject of your paragraph. Study it from every possible angle, beginning with the five senses: What does the object look, sound, smell, taste, and feel like? What are your own memories of or associations with the object?

If your topic is larger than a single object—for example, a location or a memory—you should examine all of the sensations and experiences associated with the topic. Let's say your topic is your childhood fear of the dentist. The list of details might include your white-knuckled grip on the car door as your mother tried to drag you into the office, the gleaming white smile of the dental assistant who never remembered your name, and the industrial buzz of the electric toothbrush.

Don't worry about writing full sentences or arranging the details into a logical paragraph structure during the prewriting phase. For now, simply write down every detail that comes to mind.

Organizing Your Information

After you've compiled a lengthy list of descriptive details, you can begin assembling those details into a paragraph. First, consider again the goal of your descriptive paragraph. The details you choose to include in the paragraph, as well as the details you choose to  exclude , signal to the reader how you feel about the topic. What message, if any, do you want the description to convey? Which details best convey that message? Reflect on these questions as you begin constructing the paragraph.

Every descriptive paragraph will take a somewhat different form, but the following model is a straightforward way to get started:

  • A topic sentence that identifies the topic and briefly explains its significance
  • Supporting sentences that describe the topic in specific, vivid ways, using the details you've listed during brainstorming
  • A concluding sentence that circles back to the topic's significance

Arrange the details in an order that makes sense for your topic. (You could easily describe a room from back to front, but that same structure would be a confusing way to describe a tree.) If you get stuck, read model descriptive paragraphs for inspiration, and don't be afraid to experiment with different arrangements. In your final draft, the details should follow a logical pattern, with each sentence connecting to the sentences that come before and after it.

Showing, Not Telling

Remember to  show,  rather than  tell , even in your topic and concluding sentences. A topic sentence that reads, "I am describing my pen because I love to write" is obvious "telling" (the fact that you're describing your pen should be self-evident from the paragraph itself) and unconvincing (the reader cannot  feel  or  sense  the strength of your love of writing).

Avoid "tell" statements by keeping your list of details handy at all times. Here's an example of a topic sentence that  shows  the subject's significance through the use of detail: "My ballpoint pen is my secret writing partner: The baby-soft tip glides effortlessly across the page, somehow seeming to pull my thoughts down from my brain and out through my fingertips."

Edit and Proofread Your Paragraph

The writing process isn't over until your paragraph has been edited and proofread . Invite a friend or teacher to read your paragraph and provide feedback. Assess whether the paragraph clearly conveys the message you intended to express. Read your paragraph aloud to check for awkward phrasing or cumbersome sentences. Finally, consult a proofreading checklist to confirm that your paragraph is free of minor errors.

Our brain is so powerful that it can easily imagine scenarios and make use of our senses. The job of such an essay is to appeal to our senses in a way that it creates an image in our minds. Hence a descriptive essay plays with at least one of our five senses (touch, smell, taste, hearing, sight).

In other words, the description of the person, place or thing in an essay should be really vivid. This means it after reading the essay, the reader should be left feeling like they actually know the person, have held the object or have visited the place.

Descriptive Essay

In the light of the above-mentioned things, it is comfortable to say that a descriptive essay provides for artistic freedom. For example, assume you’re writing about a house.

Instead of simply stating that the house was beautiful, you should talk about the color of the house, the garden in front of it i.e. all the details about the house. In that way, the readers would be able to imagine the house because of a nicely written essay.

Contents of a Descriptive Essay

As it is with most of the written forms of English literature, the basic structure of a descriptive essay also comprises of an introduction, a body, and the conclusion.

  • The introduction of a descriptive essay should be interesting enough to catch a reader’s attention. The introduction should be all about creating a base or a background for the person, place or thing you’re going to describe in your essay.
  • Next, the main body of a descriptive essay should appeal to the reader’s senses. This includes unfolding the information by creating images in the reader’s mind. A trick to achieving this is to explain how the subject about which you’re writing in your descriptive essay, appeals to your senses.
  • Lastly, the conclusion should summarize the whole essay. Along with again going over the main details about the essay’s subject, you should end the essay in a way that it gives a sense of completion.

How to Write a Descriptive Essay?

Before starting off with a descriptive essay, thinking about the subject in detail will be your best bet. Just take some time off and imagine about the subject. This means to imagine how the subject appeals to your senses- how does it smell, looks like and so on.

Further, if the subject is related to a past experience think about how it felt or your experience with the subject. Next, express all of these on the paper right in front of you. You can also take some time to think about how you want your essay to unfold. Lastly, a revision of the essay provides a great opportunity for improvements and small tweaks. Remember that a descriptive essay is all about teasing the reader’s senses.

1. Write a descriptive paragraph, in about 100-150 words, on ‘A Friendly Clown’. Ans.                                         A FRIENDLY CLOWN

On one corner of my dresser, sits a smiling toy clown on a tiny unicycle–a gift I received last Christmas from my close friend. The clown’s short yellow hair, made of yarn, covers its ears but is parted above the eyes. The blue eyes are outlined in black with thin, dark lashes flowing from the brows. ft has cherry-red cheeks, nose, and lips, and its broad grin disappears into the wide, white ruffle around its neck. The clown wears a fluffy, two-tone nylon costume. The left side of the outfit is light blue, and the right side is red. The two colours merge in a dark line that runs down the centre of the small outfit. Surrounding its ankles and disguising its long black shoes, are big pink bows. The white spokes on the wheels of the unicycle gather in the centre and expand to the black tire, so that the wheel somewhat resembles the inner half of a grapefruit. The clown and unicycle together stand about a foot high. As a cherished gift from my good friend Tran, this colourful figure greets me with a smile every time I enter my room.

2. Write a descriptive paragraph, in about 100450 words, on ‘Gregory—My Pet Cat’.

Ans.                                     GREGORY—MY PET CAT

Gregory is my beautiful grey Persian cat. He walks with pride and grace, performing a dance of disdain as he slowly lifts and lowers each paw with the delicacy of a ballet dancer. His pride, however, does not extend to his appearance, for he spends most of his time indoors, watching television and growing fat. He enjoys TV commercials, especially those for Meow Mix and 9 Lives. His familiarity with cat food commercials has led him to reject generic brands of cat food in favour of only the most expensive brands. Gregory is as finicky about visitors as he is about what he eats—befriending some and repelling others. He may snuggle up against your ankle, begging to be petted, or he may imitate a skunk and stain your favourite trousers. Gregory does not do this to establish his territory, as many cat experts think, but to humiliate me because he is jealous of- my friends. After my guests have fled, I look at the old fleabag snoozing and smiling to himself in front of the television set, and I have to forgive him for his obnoxious, but endearing habits.

If you go to the right wing, you will directly go to the living room There welcome my guests. Next to the living room, you can find a guest room and a rest room. The guest room is facing to a part of swimming pool. The left wing is a way to kitchen and dining room. In the hall to the kitchen and dining room, you can find a door to my family main room. When you open the door, there is a glass hall towards the children’s room. if we go through the glass hail from the guest room, you can find my room facing the swimming pool. And the glass hail is also connecting my room on the right wing and dining room on the left wing. There is a folded-glass door at the backyard where you can find swimming pool right after you open the glass door.                       ANSWER [DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH]

1 .                                          THE BLOND GUITAR

My most valuable possession is an old, slightly warped blond guitar—the first instrument I taught myself how to play. It’s nothing fancy, just a Madeira folk guitar, all scuffed and scratched and fingerprinted. At the top is a bramble of copper-wound strings, each one hooked through the eye of a silver tuning key. The strings are stretched down a long, slim neck, its frets tarnished, the wood worn by years of fingers pressing chords and picking notes. The body of the Madeira is shaped like an enormous yellow pear, one that was slightly damaged in shipping. The blond wood has been chipped and gouged to gray, particularly where the pick guard fell off years ago. No, its not a beautiful instrument, but it still lets me make music, and for that I will always treasure it.

2.                                                 THE KITCHEN

The kitchen held our lives together. My mother worked in it all day long, we ate in it almost all meals except the breakfast, I did my homework and first writing at the kitchen table, and in winter, I often had a bed made up for me on three kitchen chairs near the stove. On the wall, just over the table, hung a long horizontal mirror that sloped to a ship’s prow at each end and was lined in cherry wood. It took up the whole wall, and drew every object in the kitchen to itself. The walls were a fiercely speckled whitewash, so often re-whitened by my father in slack seasons that the paint looked as if it had been squeezed and cracked into the walls. A large electric bulb hung down the centre of the kitchen at the end of a chain that had been hooked into the ceiling; the old gas ring and key still jutted out of the wall like antlers. In the corner, next to the toilet, was the sink at which we washed, and the square tub in which my mother did our clothes. Above it, tacked to the shelf on which were pleasantly ranged square, blue-bordered white sugar and spice jars, hung calendars from the National Bank and the Workmen’s Circle; receipts for the payment of insurance premiums, and household bills on a spindle; two little boxes engraved with Hindi letters.

3 . INSPIRING TEACHER

There are some inspiring teachers in my life. But the one whom I am going to tell you about is really a great teacher for me. His name is Shyam Sagar. He was my lecturer in Sanskrit Literature, University of Delhi. He was the third person who has the highest knowledge of Sanskrit linguistic in the world. His speciality was in calligraphy and philosophy. He doesn’t have a high education title. In fact, he was a truck driver in Tamil Nadu before he was appointed to be a guest lecturer in University of Delhi. When we saw him for the first time, he didn’t look like a lecturer. He was carrying a black plastic bag and wore a simple outfit. What impressed us at that time was that he was talking as if we had watched an English movie! He didn’t have many rules in his class but he knew how to attract us to study more and more. Every time we studied linguistic, he let us feel and try the words, so we had no doubt in pronouncing them. He was able to let us understand phrases matching to situations and Tamil culture. His humble heart and persistence made us respect him more. As a result, we always tried our best in his class because we did not want to disappoint him. I have been admired by his attitude towards his students, and I try to model him, yet I’m still learning.

4 .                                         MY FAVOURITE PLACE

My favourite place which is important to me is my countryside house. I have very bright impressions and memories related to it. That is the place where I have grown up, met my friends and where I have spent almost all my life.

It is a big house with a yard. In summer, there are a lot of flowers which make the outlook beautiful In the backyard, there is a “place where I love to spend time, lying in hammock and dreaming under the tree.

5.                                             MY HOMETOWN

I grew up in Shimla which is located in the state of Himachal Pradesh in the northern part of India. Large, old oak trees and green lawns, surrounded by hills covered in pine trees formed my neighbourhood. The streets were quiet, with only the sound of birds singing and some cars passing every once in a while. During the cold, snowy winters, most people stayed inside, and one could smell wood burning in fireplaces and see smoke coming out of chimneys. In summer, one could see people walking dogs or jogging, smell cut-fresh grass, and see squirrels jumping from tree to tree. My hometown made me feel secure and comfortable. Now, I usually visit Shimla once a year. Not a lot has changed except now there are more people, more traffic, and more places to go, such as shopping malls and restaurants. I feel nostalgic when I think about Shimla.

6 .                                               MY LOVING SISTER

Everyone has a family, but only few are lucky to have an inspiring, strong and caring sister like mine. My sister’s name is Radhika Kapoor. My sister is currently staying with her friend’s family in Patel Nagar as she is pursuing an advanced academic program. She works her brain off to meet deadlines, produce new ideas, and on top of that she tries to fit time in her busy schedule every night to call or text us. For ,  engineering, she has sacrificed so much to be the best. Although engineering doesn’t define her, what she loves about it is that it’s a challenge she has to face. Radhika has everything that a little sister would have wanted. She’s understanding, intelligent, finny, and charismatic. Radhika brings solution to every problem. regardless the situation. My sister is my teacher. She guides me through my life. Radhika always advises me on what to be avoided and what would bring benefits to me. Radhika is sincere to everyone and herself. I love my sister and no one can do anything. to separate us. I hope that someday I can take good care of her as she has cared for me.

7 . MY GRANDMOTHER

A person I will always remember is my grandmother, because she was the most amazing person I had ever known. My grandmother was a person everyone wanted to be around, she always put a smile on our faces without even trying. She had the finniest laugh and was always cracking jokes which was probably the reason why we were always laughing. My grandma would help anyone no matter  hat the situation was even if it meant going out of her way to help. She was very caring and always had a welcoming home for us; my cousins and I always liked staying with her on the weekends. My grandma was like my best friend. I could talk to her about anything, and she knew exactly how to solve my problems. She also used to make the best idlis and payasam. I always looked forward to Diwali walking into her house, smelling all the warm food, waiting for us. I will always cherish all the memories I had with my grandma. She raised me to be a better person and to look at things in a positive way. She was a strong, loving, caring, funny woman and had many things to give to others. An one who met her will cherish forever.

8 .                                   MY BEST FRIEND-MY CHAMP

Mohan has been a good friend of mine for some years now. Our friendship goes all the way hack to when we first met in primary school. Although we were very young and seemed to not have too much in common, we somehow found some reasons to bond and create a friendship. It is a friendship that has become stronger over the time and through our shared life experiences. He is my exact opposite in terms of physical attributes. He is taller than me with dark hair and black eyes. He also has better fashion sense that I have with his standard jean pants and black shirt. Black is his favourite colour, so it tends to show up in most of his clothes. He is also more sociable than I am. Because of his talent for drawing, he often attracts people to look at his 3D designs on his laptop. He has a creative mind, so he has a lot of projects that he works on whenever he has some free time. He is the friend that I come to when I feel troubled or pressured. It is his voice of reason that helps me calm down and reminds me to remain composed at all times. He is my best friend because he cares about me and works on our friendship with me. I can only hope that we will be friends forever.

9.                                PLEASURES OF WATCHING A TELEVISION

Television combines the pleasures of radio and cinema. It has become the most popular means of entertainment as it provides variety of entertainment at a minimum cost. Every home has a TV nowadays. The facility of cable network has increased the pleasures of television. Now we have hundreds of channels available to us. Each person can watch programmes of his choice. Instant and live coverage of sports items, films and film-based programmes, TV serials and soap uperas are the sort of programmes which are liked the most. Television watching is entertaining as well as informative. Programmes on current affairs enlighten us. However, like every invention of science, TV has darker aspects also. Excessive TV watching proves harmful. So, let us be moderate in enjoying the pleasures of television.

They were followed by the young brave children who seemed to be very happy on the elephants as all of them had received bravery awards. The tableau of the states was the main attraction as the colourful artists presented the dances of their states with a message.
