The Perfect New Year's Resolutions Essay

So it’s that time of year when you are thinking about your New Year’s resolutions and you’ve heard about this thing call a “New Year’s resolutions essay”. Now you’re asking yourself what a New Year’s resolution essay even is, if you should write a New Year resolution essay, and how to even go about it if you wanted to.

Or maybe you’re a school student and your teacher has tasked you with writing about your New Year resolutions for school, or you are a college student and your professor has asked you to stand up in front of the class and talk about your New Year resolutions for college.

Well, never fear, because this post will tell you exactly what a New Year’s resolutions essay is and how you should go about writing one if you are convinced to (or have to!) do so.

And, non-students out there, do not leave this page thinking it is just for students, because you couldn’t be more wrong. As I hope to convince you of, a New year’s resolution essay can be a powerful thing for adults and students alike.

Richie Norton quote on New Year resolutions - “Last year told you
what you needed to know.
Now it's go time.”

What Is a New Year’s Resolutions Essay?

A New Year’s resolutions essay is simply an essay that someone writes at the end of the year or beginning of the year, talking about what they learnt from the previous year and what they want to commit to doing the next year.

The New Year is often a time where people reflect on what they have and have not achieved, what they are happy about, what they are unhappy about, and what they want to change going forwards. A New Year resolution essay simply puts those thoughts in to an essay format that is either written, printed, posted online, or spoken by way of a speech.

People often use them as a way to keep themselves accountable in the year ahead. They post them online, give them to friends, put them on the wall and even on the fridge in order to give themselves the pressure of making the resolutions public. This is actually a very effective tactic to stick to your resolutions as the external pressure keeps you accountable purely from wanting to avoid embarrassment.

Jason Soroski quote on New Year resolutions - “There is nothing
magical about the flip
of the calendar, but it
represents a clean break,
a new hope,
and a blank canvas.”

What is the Purpose of a New Year’s Resolution Essay?

The purpose of a New Year resolutions essay is to get someone to really think about what they did over the last year and how they want to adjust going in to the next year. If you are at school or college and have been tasked with writing a New Year’s resolutions essay and think it is just a boring, pointless chore, I implore you to take it seriously and use the opportunity to think about your life and what you want for it.

Although arbitrary in its date, taking stock of what you have and haven’t done, what you have and haven’t achieved over the last year compared to your goals, and how you might want to improve or adjust going forwards can be an extremely powerful thing. After all, what gets measured gets managed, meaning if you take stock of where you are, or where you are not, with your goals or personal development, you have an easier time adjusting to make sure you get back on track or stay focused if you already are so.

If you are keen on personal development and self-improvement, then a New Year’s resolution essay should be something you keep in your toolkit. Ideally you would be taking stock of where you’re at throughout the year, but if you’re just getting started with personal development or have fallen off the wagon with it of late, then a New Year resolution essay could be a great place to (re)start.

Mehmet Murat ildan quote on New Year resolutions - “Every year is a
chess game.
New Year is a new
chess game! You make
the right moves,
you win the game!”

Why You Should Write a New Year Resolution Essay

You should write a New Year resolution essay because, as mentioned, it can be a really powerful tool to help you make sure you are living the life you desire. Think about it – if you are forced to sit down and actually take stock of what you did over the last year, you will be confronted with the thoughts of what you wanted to achieve when you thought about this same topic the year before and whether you actually achieved those things. Although confronting and uncomfortable, you can use that as an opportunity to make adjustments and new, better plans for this year.

Or maybe it will give you the chance to look book and realise you absolutely rocked it, nailing all your goals and then some. So maybe your essay will help instil more confidence in you and help you think about the even greater things you can achieve in the next year.

This is a great opportunity for personal reflection – something most people don’t do. This could be a way to make sure you have the best year next year. This essay could be your chance to make new goals, new targets, and new promises to yourself.

Vern McLellan quote on New Year resolutions - "What the new year
brings to you
will depend a great deal
on what you bring
to the new year."

How to Write a New Year Resolutions Essay

How to get ideas for a new year’s resolution essay.

The best way to write a New Year resolutions essay is to self-reflect. Think back on your year and what you are glad you did and what you regret not doing. Then think how you wish you had behaved or where you feel you did well. Those things will likely point towards your resolutions or at least give you some ideas on what your resolutions could be.

You could also read other people’s resolutions online, getting ideas from what they have said. Perhaps there is an actor, athlete, politician, or other public figure you are a fan of. How do they act? How do they carry themselves in public? What do you like about them? Would you like to be similar to them in any way? This could also give you ideas on what your resolutions might be.

Did you witness something that upset you or inspired you during the year? Have you read something that made you think deeply? What was it about those things that made you feel that way? Every situation you have been in or witnessed affected you in some way. What ways were you affected? How you feel about those things could point you towards your resolutions in regards to the kind of person you want to be and how you want to act.

Taylor Duvall quote on New Year resolutions - "This year, be structured enough
for success and achievement
and flexible enough
for creativity and fun."

Perhaps you’ve been thinking about making a career change lately. Maybe you hate your job and want to move on. What could you do and how could you act over the next year that will help you move in to a career or field you want to do? Do you like your job and want to do better and get promoted? What resolutions could you have that will make you stand out to your boss?

Have you been working hard enough at school or college, or have you been slacking off? Have you been taking part in extra-curricular activities and want to do more, or have you been keeping yourself isolated and regret it?

Do you keep making the same mistakes in love or with your diet? Do you want to get in shape, exercise more, and make sure you eat the right things going forwards?

In essence, think about where you are unhappy, dissatisfied, or wanting to improve in life. Those things can point to possible resolutions. On the other hand, think where you feel you are doing well, where you have succeeded and excelled. Do you want to make resolutions to improve those things even further or simply to make sure your are continuing to do those things?

Tips for students: if you are looking for some inspiration to come up with your New Year resolutions, you should check out this post on The Best New Year Resolutions to Help Students Succeed .

Cyril Cusack quote on New Year resolutions - "If you asked me for my
new year resolution,
it would be
to find out who I am."

Writing a New Year’s resolution essay

Do you want your essay to be short – one you can simply stick up on the fridge and look at quickly every morning? Perhaps bullet points are the way forwards for you.

Do you do better and connect more when you get deep in to something? Maybe you want to write something longer-form or even a full-blown manifesto if you think that would help you!

There are no rights or wrongs when it comes to your New Year resolution essay. The point is to write something that makes you think, means something to you and is something you want to stick to.

The most usual way to write an essay is to write an opening statement – what you propose to say in your essay, the argument you are going to make, where you are going to take your audience – then make your points – in this case, talk about what you learnt about yourself over the last year and how you would like to adjust or improve over the next year – then make your conclusion – a short summary and ending to what you have said.

Melody Beattie quote on New Year resolutions - "The new year stands
before us like a chapter in a book,
waiting to be written.
We can help write that story
by setting goals."

When Should I Write My New Year Resolution Essay?

You should write your New Year resolution essay when you are in the best frame of mind to do it, when you can give it the most dedication. You should also try and write it as close to New Year’s Eve as possible, as this will mean you can take full stock of year you just had and start fresh the next day – on New Year’s Day – having just written your New Year’s resolutions essay.

You may choose to write it with a friend, write it alone, with loud, inspirational music on, or in a quiet room only lit with candles. However you do it, just be sure to put your full focus on it in order to get the most benefit.

Michael Josephson quote on New Year resolutions - "Approach the new year
with resolve to find the
opportunities hidden
in each new day."

When it comes to writing your New Year’s resolutions essay, remember that this could be a really good opportunity to improve your life, to make sure you are going after your dreams , to make sure you aren’t wasting your life or wasting your time as you go through the year, so that you avoid feeling like a failure again if that is a pattern for you and that you feel successful throughout the year as you stick to your resolutions and achieve your goals.

Use this opportunity to make this your best New Year ever… no… your best YEAR ever. Go in to January with your essay in hand. Put it on the fridge, share it online, do whatever your must to make sure the resolutions you made stay in the forefront of your mind throughout the year (and not just the first few weeks of January). And then make sure you act on and stick to those resolutions.

Short Essay: New Year Resolution

Writing a New Year’s resolution essay provides an excellent opportunity for self-reflection, goal-setting, and personal growth. As the calendar turns and a new year begins, many individuals embrace the tradition of making resolutions, which are promises or commitments to improve oneself or achieve specific goals. Crafting an essay about New Year’s resolutions allows us to delve deeper into our aspirations, motivations, and plans for the future. It prompts us to evaluate our past experiences, identify areas for improvement, and outline concrete steps towards personal development.

Table of Contents

New Year Resolution Essay Tips

Reflect on the past year: Begin by reflecting on the experiences, achievements, and challenges you encountered in the previous year. Consider what you learned, what you would like to improve, and what goals you want to set for the upcoming year.

Set specific and realistic goals: Choose resolutions that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART goals). Avoid vague or overly ambitious resolutions that may be difficult to achieve. Instead, focus on specific actions or behaviors that can be realistically implemented in your life.

Prioritize your resolutions: Identify the most important resolutions that align with your values, aspirations, and personal growth. It’s better to focus on a few meaningful goals rather than overwhelming yourself with an extensive list.

Provide context and personal anecdotes: Share personal stories or anecdotes that illustrate why each resolution is important to you. This will add depth and authenticity to your essay, allowing the reader to connect with your experiences and motivations.

Outline your action plan: For each resolution, outline the steps or strategies you plan to take to achieve it. Break down your goals into manageable tasks and establish a timeline or milestones to track your progress. This demonstrates your commitment and shows that you have thoughtfully considered the path to achieving your resolutions.

Discuss potential challenges and solutions: Acknowledge potential obstacles or challenges you may face while pursuing your resolutions. Address how you plan to overcome them and develop strategies to stay motivated and resilient in the face of setbacks.

Emphasize personal growth and self-reflection: Discuss how your resolutions contribute to your personal growth, well-being, and overall happiness. Reflect on the positive changes you anticipate in your life as a result of achieving these goals.

Be honest and authentic: Your essay should reflect your genuine aspirations and beliefs. Avoid writing what you think others want to hear and instead express your true intentions and values.

Edit and revise: Once you have written your essay, review it for clarity, coherence, and grammar. Edit out any unnecessary details or repetition, ensuring that your ideas flow logically.

Conclusion: Conclude your essay by summarizing your resolutions and reaffirming your commitment to achieving them. End on a positive note, expressing optimism and excitement for the new year.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #1

As the calendar turns and a new year dawns upon us, it is a time of reflection, renewal, and the opportunity for personal growth. New Year’s resolutions have long been a tradition, allowing individuals to set intentions and goals for the coming year. For me, this tradition is not just a fleeting promise but a chance to embark on a journey of self-improvement.

One of my resolutions for the upcoming year is to prioritize my physical and mental well-being. In the fast-paced world we live in, it is easy to neglect self-care amidst the demands of daily life. By making a conscious effort to exercise regularly, eat nutritious meals, and practice mindfulness, I aim to cultivate a healthier lifestyle. Taking care of my physical and mental health will not only enhance my overall well-being but also provide me with the energy and resilience necessary to tackle life’s challenges.

Another resolution I have is to expand my knowledge and broaden my horizons. Learning should be a lifelong endeavor, and I believe that continuous education is key to personal growth. Whether it’s through reading books, attending seminars, or taking up new hobbies, I aspire to constantly seek knowledge, explore diverse perspectives, and embrace new opportunities for intellectual development. By doing so, I hope to nurture my curiosity, deepen my understanding of the world, and become a more well-rounded individual.

Additionally, I resolve to foster stronger connections with loved ones and build meaningful relationships. In today’s digital age, it is easy to get caught up in a virtual world, often overlooking the importance of genuine human connection. I want to invest time and effort in nurturing my relationships, engaging in meaningful conversations, and creating lasting memories with family and friends. By being present and actively listening, I hope to strengthen the bonds that enrich my life and bring joy to those around me.

In conclusion, the start of a new year holds immense potential for growth and positive change. Through my resolutions to prioritize my well-being, expand my knowledge, and foster stronger connections, I am committed to embracing personal development and striving for a more fulfilling life. While resolutions may not always be easy to achieve, I am determined to approach them with dedication, perseverance, and a mindset open to learning from both successes and setbacks. As I embark on this journey of self-improvement, I am excited about the possibilities that the new year holds and the person I can become through embracing growth and positive change.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #2

As the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, a sense of possibility fills the air. It’s a time when we bid farewell to the old and eagerly embrace the new, armed with resolutions that promise personal growth and positive change. This year, I am determined to embark on a transformative journey through my New Year’s resolutions.

First and foremost, I resolve to cultivate a mindset of gratitude and positivity. In a world often defined by negativity and challenges, it is crucial to acknowledge and appreciate the blessings that surround us. Each day, I will strive to find something to be grateful for, whether it’s a simple pleasure or a significant achievement. By shifting my perspective to one of gratitude, I hope to nurture a positive outlook that permeates every aspect of my life.

Additionally, I am committed to prioritizing self-care and well-being. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to neglect our own needs. However, I believe that taking care of ourselves is not a luxury but a necessity. I will make a conscious effort to engage in activities that nourish my body, mind, and soul. This may include regular exercise, meditation, pursuing hobbies, or simply allowing myself time to rest and rejuvenate. By prioritizing self-care, I aim to create a solid foundation for overall well-being and resilience.

Furthermore, I aspire to embrace personal growth by stepping out of my comfort zone. Growth often occurs when we challenge ourselves and push beyond familiar boundaries. I will seek opportunities to learn and develop new skills, whether it’s taking on a new project at work, enrolling in a course, or engaging in meaningful conversations with people who possess different perspectives. By embracing discomfort and embracing the unknown, I believe I can unlock my full potential and continue evolving as an individual.

Lastly, I resolve to make a positive impact in the world around me. Small acts of kindness can create ripples of change that extend far beyond our immediate sphere. I will strive to contribute to my community through volunteering, supporting causes I care about, and spreading kindness wherever I go. By recognizing the power of my actions, no matter how small, I can be part of a collective effort to create a more compassionate and harmonious world.

In conclusion, New Year’s resolutions offer a pathway to personal transformation. Through cultivating gratitude, prioritizing self-care, embracing growth, and making a positive impact, I am committed to embarking on a journey of self-discovery and self-improvement. While the road may be challenging at times, I am determined to stay focused, resilient, and open to the opportunities that lie ahead. As the New Year unfolds, I am excited to see the person I can become and the positive changes I can bring to my own life and the world around me.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #3

As the New Year unfolds, I find myself reflecting on the past and envisioning a future filled with growth and self-improvement. This year, I am determined to prioritize balance and mindfulness in every aspect of my life through my New Year’s resolutions.

First and foremost, I resolve to achieve a healthier work-life balance. In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to become consumed by professional responsibilities, leaving little time for personal pursuits and relationships. I will set clear boundaries, carve out dedicated time for self-care, and strive to be fully present in my personal life. By nurturing a harmonious balance between work and leisure, I aim to enhance my overall well-being and cultivate stronger connections with loved ones.

Moreover, I am committed to practicing mindfulness in my daily life. Mindfulness is the art of being fully present and aware of the present moment, without judgment. I will incorporate mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mindful eating into my routine. By cultivating a heightened sense of awareness and living in the present, I hope to reduce stress, increase focus, and find greater joy in the simple pleasures of life.

In addition, I resolve to prioritize self-reflection and personal growth. Regular self-reflection allows us to gain insights into our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, enabling us to make intentional choices. I will dedicate time for introspection, journaling, and setting personal goals. By embracing self-reflection, I can identify areas for improvement, celebrate achievements, and chart a course for personal growth and development.

Furthermore, I aspire to embrace sustainability and contribute to a healthier planet. I will adopt eco-friendly practices such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and supporting sustainable initiatives. By making conscious choices that minimize my ecological footprint, I can contribute to the preservation of our environment and inspire others to do the same.

Lastly, I resolve to foster a spirit of gratitude and kindness. Each day, I will make an effort to express gratitude for the blessings in my life and extend acts of kindness to others. Whether it’s through a simple smile, a heartfelt thank-you, or a charitable act, I believe that small gestures can have a profound impact on both the giver and the recipient.

In conclusion, my New Year’s resolutions revolve around embracing balance and mindfulness in all aspects of my life. By prioritizing work-life balance, practicing mindfulness, engaging in self-reflection, embracing sustainability, and fostering gratitude and kindness, I am committed to nurturing my well-being, personal growth, and contributing to a better world. As the New Year begins, I am excited to embark on this transformative journey, knowing that each step I take brings me closer to the balanced, mindful, and fulfilled life I aspire to lead.

Now that we have our writing partner, the next step is to determine the purpose and the question we aim to answer in our essay. This is a crucial part, as a New Year Resolution essay centers around what you aspire to achieve through your goals. Let's formulate a New Year Resolution question to proceed.

Example New Year Resolution Essay question

Step 3: Define Your Vision

Now, let's strategize on how to address our question. What are our intended achievements? In crafting our objectives, keep in mind that this plan spans the entire year. Therefore, diversify your goals across professional, educational, health, or personal domains. Consider listing out specific goals for the year.

 Set up New Year Goals

Pro Tip : Optimal goal-setting involves using the SMART criteria. This simple tool ensures that our goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound, leading to more effective results.

Step 4: Prepare a concise Thesis Statement

Now, we will create a thesis statement—a brief statement that answers our main question from Step 2. This thesis statement will encompass all the goals and objectives we listed, aiming to provide a succinct response to our question. Incorporate this thesis statement into your introductory paragraph.

New Year Resolution Thesis Statement

Step 5: Start your introduction

The next step is to write your introductory paragraph; remember, the introduction helps your readers understand what they are going to be reading about as they move forward in your essay. So, in this introduction, we can incorporate a hook - something that will engage the reader and help them understand the goals you're selecting and why you're selecting them. A great example of a hook for your New Year's resolution essay could be:

"New Year's magic whispers promises of growth. This essay is my map to a year brimming with purpose and triumphs."

Pro tip: Begin your introductory paragraph with a motivational quote to make the introduction more compelling and engaging.

Step 6: Create your Topic Sentences

Once we have our thesis statement, it's crucial to write clear topic sentences as openers for each goal. These sentences should briefly introduce and discuss each objective. Remember, at this point, our main tasks are to ensure our goals are noted down and well-understood. This step is pivotal, taking up a significant portion of the initial writing process for the New Year Resolution essay.

Step 7: Write Body Paragraphs

Now that we have our entire plan – the question we are addressing, our statement, and our goals – it's time to craft body paragraphs for each goal. In these paragraphs, we'll outline the action plan we've decided upon. For instance, if your goal is to read a book every month, you should have a clear set of instructions, such as the genre you're interested in, the number of pages you aim to read, and what to do if you miss a day.

New Year Resolution Body paragraphs

Pro Tip : It's always beneficial to include your motivation for achieving each goal. This way, if you ever feel lost, a quick review of your essay can provide guidance and get you back

Step 8: Conclude

Now that we are at the end of our essay, it is important to conclude it thoroughly. How can we do this effectively? Reconnect with the hook that we started in the introduction. Discuss how the journey outlined in your essay leads back to the promises of growth mentioned in the hook. Then, reflect on how you envision yourself if you successfully achieve all your New Year's resolutions.

Step 9: Revise and Edit

Take a careful look at your essay and make it shine. Check for any spelling, grammar, or punctuation mistakes. Make sure every word is clear and makes sense. When you pay attention to these details, your writing will look more professional. Think of it as adding a touch of literary stardust to your work, making it sparkle and stand out.

Step 10 : Finalize the Format

Imagine your essay as a well-crafted outfit. Dress it in the right formatting style, whether it's the classic MLA or the modern APA. Pay close attention to the details like font, spacing, and citation style, ensuring your creation is presented flawlessly. This final touch will elevate your essay, making it stand out as a polished work of art.

how to write a new year’s resolution essay

It’s that time of year again – the New Year has arrived, and with it, the opportunity for new beginnings. What better way to kick off things than by making a resolution? And if you’re looking for inspiration, why not turn to the people who’ve already made some great resolutions for you? Here are five tips from copywriters on how to write a new year’s resolution essay that will really stick.

What are New Year’s Resolutions?

New Year’s Resolutions are a tradition that started in the United States. People make resolutions to change their lives for the better, but what does this actually mean? Well, for most people, their New Year’s Resolution is a goal they want to accomplish in the coming year. These goals can be big or small, but they all have one thing in common: they need to be written down and put into action. Here are some tips on how to write a New Year’s Resolution essay:

1. Define your resolution clearly. What do you want to change about your life this year? What specific behaviors do you want to improve upon? It’s important to be as specific as possible when writing down your resolution because it will help you stay motivated and on track. 2. Set a deadline. Most New Year’s Resolutions expire after 365 days, but it’s helpful to set a shorter deadline if you find yourself struggling to stick to your plan. If you’re not sure when your resolution should expire, think about what would make you feel good once it’s accomplished. For example, if you want to lose weight, committing to losing 5 pounds by the end of the month might help keep you on track. 3. Find a support system. No one is going to be able to change their life overnight, which is why it’s important to have a supportive community around you when making these changes. Talking to someone who has gone through the same thing can be really helpful in terms of motivation. 4. Be realistic about your goals. Even if you think you’re capable of doing something that seems impossible, be realistic about your chances of success. It’s better to set smaller goals that you can achieve than to set too lofty of a goal and give up before you even start. 5. Reward yourself for reaching your goals. This isn’t always necessary, but rewarding oneself for sticking to a New Year’s Resolution can help keep you on track and motivated. Some options include taking a day off from work, going out with friends, or splurging on something nice.

Types of New Year’s Resolutions

There are a few different types of New Year’s resolutions, and the way you go about writing your resolution will depend on what type you are aiming for. If you want to achieve a goal that is long-term, such as losing weight or quitting smoking, then you might want to think about making a plan and setting some benchmarks. If your goal is more short-term, like getting more exercise or eating better, then simply writing down what you want to do and when you plan to do it can be enough.

Whatever type of resolution you choose, there are some important things to keep in mind when writing it. First and foremost, make sure that your goal is something that you are willing to work hard for – if it’s too easy or doesn’t require any real effort, then it’s likely not going to be very effective. Second, be realistic about how long it will take to achieve your goal – if you think it will take six months but realistically it might only take two weeks, make sure to factor that into your plan. And lastly, remember to reward yourself along the way – setting small goals and rewards can help keep yourself motivated and on track.

How to Make a New Year’s Resolution Stick

Making a New Year’s Resolution is a popular way to start the year, but most don’t follow through. Here are tips on how to make your resolution stick.

1. Set realistic goals. If you want to lose weight, aim to lose 1-2 pounds per week. If you want to quit smoking, set a goal of quitting by the end of the year. Making goals that are too difficult to achieve will only lead to frustration and failure.

2. Break your goal into smaller, easier-to-reach chunks. For example, instead of trying to quit smoking for six months, try reducing your cigarettes per day by one for 30 days. This will make it more manageable and give you a better sense of accomplishment along the way.

3. Make a plan for how you’re going to achieve your goal. Include things like when and where you’ll exercise, what foods you’ll cut out, or whom you’ll ask for help when needed. Having a plan will help keep you on track and motivated throughout the year.

4. Reward yourself for sticking to your goal. This can be anything from rewarding yourself with treats after each successful day to setting bigger  goals.

How to Get Over Failure

There’s no mistaking the feeling of failure. It seems to creep up on us out of nowhere, and it can feel like the end of the world. But there’s hope – if you know how to get over failure. Here are four tips:

1. Recognize and acknowledge your feelings. When you fail, it can feel like a huge setback. But it’s important to remember that failure is just a step in the learning process. Accept that you made a mistake, and learn from it.

2. Don’t beat yourself up. It’s tempting to think about how much better you would have done if only things had gone differently, but that only makes things worse. Instead, focus on what you did well and what you can do next time.

3. Make a plan for recovery. If rejection feels like a never-ending cycle, make sure you have a plan for recovering from failure. It might involve taking some time off, seeking support from friends or family, or studying more extensively on the topic at hand.

4. Take action. Once you’ve recognized your failures and made a plan for recovery, it’s time to take action! Start by trying something new, and then see

Life Kit's Resolution Planner: 40 ideas and tips to start your New Year

What do you want to accomplish this year? Scroll through Life Kit's expert guides for practical and inspiring ways to grow in 2023.

Ah, the new year. It's a time to sketch out your goals and think about the roadmap to get there.

Life Kit has curated a list of some of our best episodes to help set you up for success in 2023. They include practical guidance (like how to pick a birth control or ask for a raise ), forward-thinking advice (like how to save for retirement or freeze your eggs ) and tips on how to live more mindfully (like how to reduce food waste or set boundaries ).

It might feel hard to start a new habit, but as BJ Fogg, a behavior scientist at Stanford and author of Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything , told Life Kit in a 2020 interview , "it's easier to create habits and change than most people think, and it's faster than most people think. It can even be fun if you do it in the right way."

The key is to understand how behavior change happens. You've got to have the motivation, the ability to do the behavior and a prompt, says Fogg. "And the prompt is anything that reminds you to do this behavior now. And when those three things come together at the same moment, a behavior happens."

So go on, pick a resolution that's achievable — but also bold and aspirational. We've got 40+ ideas for you to choose from. Here's to a stronger, more confident you in 2023.

New Year’s Resolution Essay Writing (MADE EASY!) for Middle School

new years resolution essay ideas for middle school language arts

Happy New Year! The return from winter break in January offers the perfect backdrop to get students thinking about their academic and personal goals for the year. I love to take the time to challenge my students to think about their work so far and where they hope to be by the end of the school year. I like to begin the year with a New Year’s resolution essay writing unit where we work on goal-setting and resolve to do things that will help us to be an even better version of ourselves.

There are plenty of unique ways to teach essay writing, but I have found success with the BING BANG BONGO essay template. The concept is easy for students to understand. Here is an overview of the steps:

  • Identify your topic, and brainstorm the three main points or ideas you will use to craft your essay.
  • Introduction with a Topic Sentence . What is your piece about? What three pieces of information do you want to share with the reader based on the topic of your piece?
  • BING Paragraph 1 : What is the first idea you shared in your topic sentence? Your first sentence should introduce that first idea. Follow this with two or three supporting sentences, and close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • BANG Paragraph 2 : What is the second idea you shared in your topic sentence? Two or three supporting sentences should follow the opening sentence in introducing that second idea. Close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • BONGO Paragraph 3 : What is the third idea you shared in your topic sentence? Again, clearly state the third idea in your opening sentence and write two or three supporting sentences. Close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • Conclusion: Concluding Sentence: Bring your piece to a close. Restate the purpose of the essay, but do not add any new information. Make sure you complete your thoughts so the reader walks away with a full understanding of your points.

If you are interested in a complete essay writing resource that is based on the BING, BANG, BONGO strategy, check out my New Year’s Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit , which can be used as a printable unit or integrated in Google Classroom.

New Year's Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit

To kick off the brainstorming process for this lesson plan, I start by discussing commercials students have noticed on TV. Typically, they will confirm they have seen lots of commercials for gym memberships and weight-loss companies. I ask them why they think these are so prominent during January, and they respond that people are often setting goals at the beginning of a new year.

From there, we create a brainstorm cloud where students list ways they could improve themselves. Some examples are: practicing harder, putting more effort into school work, listening more to a parent, being more responsible, etc. Depending on the suggestions you receive, it can also be helpful to explain the difference between setting a goal and achieving a dream.

Next, I have the students decide on the three goals they want to work on. Those get added to their brainstorm organizer, and we then move on to writing.

resolution brainstorm organizer

Next, we move on to creating our topic sentences. Sometimes it is best for teachers to share examples of their own topic sentences first, so students understand how to begin organizing their writing. I usually model my own resolutions in front of the class so we can go through the thought process together. My three goals for this project were: saving more money, being less quick-tempered, and saying only respectful things about others.

Once you establish topic sentences, show students how your BING paragraph (in my case) would be all about saving money, my BANG paragraph would be all about being less quick-tempered, and my BONGO paragraph would be all about saying only respectful things about others.

Students always LOVE to hear the stories behind my resolutions, and you’ll never face a shortage of suggestions to help you achieve your resolutions!

BING BANG BONGO essay writing paragraphs

In addition to having three strategies, I require each paragraph to include an opening sentence introducing the resolution and a concluding sentence bringing the paragraph to a close.

On the second day, I like to review our previous instructions and get to work on our introductions and conclusions. Some teachers may find this strategy backwards, but I have found it can be tricky for students to find a place to begin. With each of their body paragraphs completed, students have a better grasp of how they need to grab the reader’s attention and then bring the work to a close.

I often use the example of crime and drama shows when discussing the introductory paragraph. Often, the writers open the show with a shocking image or event to grab the audience’s attention and keep them glued to the show. This is the same type of statement we want to make with the first sentences in our resolution essay.

For the conclusions, I share how we are bringing the piece to a close and sending the reader on their way. This is NOT the time to share new information, but instead to give the reader the chance to reflect on what we have shared. At this point, the students will have completed their organizers and are ready for the first draft of their resolution essay.

As part of the review process, I typically have a writing conference with each student. The focus here is: mechanics-CUPS-capitalization, usage/grammar, punctuation, and spelling. We also discuss organization and the use of transitions in their sentences. Here is an example editing chart, which is included in the Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit from above.

CUPS Editing Chart - capitalization, usage/grammar, punctuation, and spelling

After all edits are in place, students rewrite their final drafts and publish them on their Chromebooks or display them in the classroom. Not everyone will be interested in sharing their resolutions, so choose which format makes the most sense for your group.

Essay writing is a skill that students can learn in the middle grades and will carry with them through college. Sadly, this wasn’t a skill I learned until high school, but with common core standards, writing extensive or elaborate pieces is now a requirement for our students at all levels, specifically in the middle grades.

For this reason, I created the Resolutions Made Easy writing resource. I wanted to help my students construct a thorough essay that required them to write 5-paragraphs effectively and successfully. It provides all the materials you need to walk students through the brainstorming, drafting, editing, and publishing stages.

how to write a new year's resolution essay

It takes my students about five class periods to complete the entire process, depending on how quickly they are able to type their papers. It may take your students more or less time.

If you are looking for more writing activities and resources, be sure to check out my ELA resources for a variety of inexpensive, print-and-go ideas. If you are considering my essay writing toolkit, be sure to check out my January ELA Bundle which includes the writing toolkit and three additional units that you might like to try during this first month back from break. The New Year is the perfect time to refresh your classroom and experiment with new lesson formats to keep your students engaged.

My New Year Resolution Essay - 100, 200, 500 Words

People celebrate the beginning of a new year to give a fresh start to their lives. They take new year resolutions because everyone made mistakes in the previous year that they want to avoid in the future or to do something new in the next year. Resolutions assist us in staying focused on our choices.

When this year began, I resolved to focus on areas where I am weak or lack confidence. This covered my weak subject areas, my extreme engagement in watching web series, my inability to manage time for other activities etc. I made a timetable which I reviewed and modified every week, such that I accommodated all my activities and devoted adequate time to them. At the end of the year, I could feel positive results and felt proud of myself for sticking to my new year resolutions.

The New year reminds us that time is not permanent. It moves silently and stops for no one. A single goal or a list of goals one wants to accomplish or get rid of might form a new year's resolution. They give us a new chance to achieve something in our life, whether it is related to our personal life, professional life or academic life. For a resolution to work in our lives, we must be a person with strong determination.

Importance of Resolutions | New year resolutions are important for various reasons, some of them being:-

All activities that waste time and result in nothing are eliminated and replaced with new ones that never waste time and result in positive changes.

Someone who does not make any resolutions for the new year is similar to someone walking somewhere without knowing the way.

No matter how big or little a resolution is, it is important to consider its purpose and the results it will produce when put into practice in our daily lives.

My Resolutions | I have also made resolutions previously, but like everyone else, I break them. But this time, I will keep my resolutions and put more effort into changing myself. I made a list of resolutions that I plan to begin following next year. They consist of sticking to a set schedule for time management, avoiding junk food and putting a priority on healthy food for better health, and, most importantly, completing courses before exams.

A New year is not only about parties and celebrations or spending money lavishly, but it is also an excellent opportunity to start over and make changes in our life. Having a new year's resolution is a thing to be proud of and to share with others. It is what we promised to do at the end of the year. Making a new year's resolution is crucial because I need a goal or purpose to live.

Different People, Different Resolutions

Before moving forward, it is important to keep in mind that the changes must be fair and respectable. A resolution for the coming year is an idea that better defines and represents you. A new year's resolution is different for every person. Some may believe that resolutions work, while others may feel that they do nothing. A mature man will have the resolution to avoid bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol. For students, it may include exercising daily, going to bed early, eating healthy food etc. Having a new year resolution sounds as easy as ABC but applying it throughout the year is a big task as the world is full of distractions.

We ask questions so we can get answers! That’s why answering self-reflection questions about the new year are one of the best ways to write a new year’s resolution.

Remember, that reflecting on the past and thinking about the future is the ancient recipe for making a new year’s resolution.

You can take some time to review your year with questions like,

  • How do you feel about your last year?
  • What about 2023 feels unfinished, or incomplete?
  • Did you accomplish your goals? Why or why not?
  • What would you do if anything was possible?
  • How can you make your life better in the new year?
  • What’s one thing you would change about your life?

You get the idea! The point of these questions is to get to the heart of what you really, truly want to achieve in 2024.  Keep it simple remember, focus on what matters to you the most, not what you think you should.

#4. Make it SMART

One of the best ways to write a resolution you can keep is to make it a “SMART” resolution! Essentially, it’s a SMART goal that you’re calling your resolution.

In case you’re not familiar with the term, S.M.A.R.T. goals are the gold standard in goal setting. Being specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound, they’re one of the best ways to avoid goal-setting mistakes and failure.

So, why not use this framework to help you write a new year’s resolution? Sounds like the perfect plan.

To write a new year’s resolution that’s also a S.M.A.R.T. goal, it needs to check each of these boxes:

  • Specific : What exactly do you want to achieve?
  • Measurable : How will you measure success or failure?
  • Attainable : Can you actually achieve this?
  • Relevant : Is this the best resolution for you?
  • Time-bound : How much time do you need?

Examples of SMART New Year’s Resolutions:

To help you make sure your own resolution meets these requirements, here are two of the most popular new year’s resolutions rewritten as SMART resolutions.

#1. “ Get rich ” or “make more money”

  • I will increase my income by $10,000 in 2024 by cutting back on spending and starting a side-hustle business so that I can save up a down payment for a home for my family.

#2. “ Get fit in the new year ” or “lose weight”

  • By October 2024, I will lose 25 lbs and keep it off for good with daily exercise and eating healthy meals so that I can finally breath better and keep up with my kids.

Just like that simple wishes that are bound to fail become strategic blueprints for success.

Take your resolutions and make them SMART goals too.

#5. Reflect on Your Life

Want to write a new year’s resolution that really matters to you? Take time to reflect on all the areas of your life to find the perfect focus for 2024.

Sometimes it’s hard to think of the best resolution to set when you’re reflecting on your life as a whole. Questions like, “what’s your greatest challenge” or even “how would you change your life for the better ,” can be hard to answer without a point of reference.

If these questions make you go glossy-eyed, then taking the time to reflect on each individual area of your life is the right choice. Don’t think about everything at once, just one area at a time.

“The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story by setting goals.” ― Melody Beattie

There are ten distinct areas of your life, where do you stand in each?

  • Physical Health and Fitness
  • Emotional Wellbeing and Wellness
  • Finances and Money Habits
  • Spirituality and Connection
  • Experiences and Everyday Life
  • Relationships, Family, and Friendships
  • Career and Worklife
  • Education and Learning
  • Community and Belonging
  • Mind and Mental Life

#6. Think Less and More

If you’re looking for a super simple way to write a new year’s resolution, this is it! Think in terms of doing less of this, and doing more of this in 2024.

Grab a sheet of paper, and make two columns (or get your FREE New Year’s Resolution Workbook). Then write down everything you want to do less of in the new year, and all the things you want to do more of.

Is there a more simple formula for living a happy life ?

Here are some examples to help you with your list:

  • Do less complaining, feeling guilty, thinking negative thoughts , eating junk food
  • Do more meditation , things that make me smile, mental health days , taco Tuesdays

Keep it simple, even slightly silly if your life, remember it’s your new year’s resolution. The best part about thinking in terms of less and more is that you’re already making a list of perfect daily habits to start in the new year. It’s the small changes that make a big difference .

#7. Use Power Words

Have you heard about power words before? They’re the types of words that excite, inspire, and motivate you when you use them .  Power words are full of emotion and feeling. When you read them, you can literally feel it!

Similar to the action words above, power words are perfect for writing your new year’s resolution. You can also add them to your already written resolution for an extra bit of something.

There’s an endless list of power words for you to choose from, but here are some truly spectacular ones:

Choosing and sticking to resolutions is something I find so hard to do in the moment! And it is great to have a steps or a plan to be able to follow, and set small achievements along the way.

January 1, 2020 at 2:42 pm

It’s hard to decide, I’ll admit it, espeically when you want all the things. Choose a place to start and build on that step by step. The secret to making a new year’s resolution stick all year long is surprisingly to just focus on each day at a time.

Have You Made Any New Year’s Resolutions?

Do you find it easy or difficult to set goals and achieve them?

By Shannon Doyne

Are you using the New Year as a starting point for any changes you’d like to make to your life, routines or attitudes? If so, how will you motivate yourself to keep your resolutions? How do you expect your efforts to go this year?

In the Opinion essay “ One Resolution You Might Just Keep ,” Garret Keizer, a poet, memoirist and editor, contemplates the whole point of making annual resolutions in light of his own 70th birthday. The essay begins:

If resolution makers wanted a patron saint, they could do worse than Samuel Johnson (1709-84), a lifelong resolver and by his own admission a lifelong failure at keeping his resolutions. Reading his diaries, we may sigh in recognition as time after time — at the New Year, at Easter and on his birthday — Johnson renews his intentions to rise early, to be more studious, to be more moderate in his intake of food and drink, and laments his neglect of those same intentions in the year past. “I have now spent 55 years in resolving,” he wrote on his birthday in 1764, “having from the earliest time almost that I can remember been forming schemes of a better life. I have done nothing; the need of doing therefore is pressing, since the time of doing is short.” I have these words in mind as I greet a New Year that will mark my 70th birthday by yet again resolving, as Johnson did, to rise earlier, resist hurtful thoughts and keep a journal. I’ll also resolve to check my email less compulsively and my blood pressure more often. To reduce the amount of sodium in my diet. To be a more faithful friend and a more attentive parent and spouse. To listen more than I talk. Over the years Johnson made readjustments to his program, especially to his rising time, a perennial challenge for someone prone to indolence, chronic depression and late hours. “I have, all my life long, been lying till noon,” he remarked to a dinner host, “yet I tell all young men, and tell them with great sincerity, that nobody who does not rise early will ever do any good.” Those young men (and women too, several of whom he helped toward publication) must have laughed among themselves at all that their habitually late-sleeping mentor had managed to accomplish in spite of his own advice. They would have cited his elegant Rambler essays, his groundbreaking edition of Shakespeare’s plays and his monumental “A Dictionary of the English Language,” remnants of which survive in any dictionary you’re likely to pick up today. It’s now commonplace in English literature courses to speak of the mid-to-late 18th century as “the age of Johnson.” His contemporaries would not have been surprised. For Johnson, however, the critical question was not whether he’d accomplished great things but whether he’d accomplished them in proportion to his talents and his limited time. He was hyperconscious of mortality — on his watch was engraved “The night cometh, when no man can work” — and painfully frustrated by his seeming inability to keep the simplest promise to himself. Like almost everyone I know, he felt he should be accomplishing much more than he did.

Students, read the entire article, then tell us:

Were you reminded of anyone you know as you read about Samuel Johnson’s concern for how he used his time and potential, as well as his tendency to give advice he himself didn’t follow? Were you reminded of yourself?

Mr. Keizer says of Johnson, “Like almost everyone I know, he felt he should be accomplishing much more than he did.” How does that statement make you feel? Do you think most people, even the most accomplished among us, feel like they have not done enough or that there are changes they need to make to improve their lives?

What are some of your short- and long-term goals? Which of your habits will help you reach them? What do you think you might have to change about your life to make your dreams come true?

Do you wait for significant events — the New Year, birthdays or the beginning of the school year — to set new goals? Or do you prefer to make small and incremental changes throughout the year?

What advice would you give someone who is frustrated by their slow progress in reaching their goals, or who struggles to keep their resolutions? Why?

In a related Opinion essay , Tish Harrison Warren, an Anglican priest, writes:

The point of resolutions shouldn’t be to add another task to our busy lives or another brick on the crushing and cruel burden to ‘do better.’ The point is that renewal is always possible, and with a large dollop of grace we can freely try new things; we can continue to grow and change.

What do you think about these ideas? Does making resolutions remind you that you can always change and grow? You might also read the suggestions the author has compiled from people who offer ways one might cultivate spiritual changes at this time of year. Which piece of advice most speaks to you?

200 New Year’s Resolution Ideas for Career, Work, and Personal Growth

A New Year’s Resolution is a Filipino tradition. Or at least, that’s how Filipino students deemed it. Every January of each year, on the first day of class, students from elementary, high school, and college declare their New Year’s resolutions.

When I was in high school, I wrote my New Year’s Resolution essays (as it was often required) during Christmas breaks. It is still cool to write resolutions these days for fun.

I do Impact Goals, Quarterly Goals, and Monthly Projects, which are better than most New Year’s Resolutions. I will share these with you later if you are interested. An excellent support to your New Year’s resolutions is  3 Words . Find out how to do it.

I am publishing this three days before the New Year. So you will have plenty of time to write your New Year’s Resolution or do the alternatives.

New Year’s Resolution Ideas

Typically, people get a pen and a piece of paper to write one, two, three, or even ten New Year’s resolutions. They write down whatever comes to mind.

A few get post-it notes and Sharpie pens. They write on each note one resolution. They may come up with dozens. Then, they pick the top ten they want to do next year.

I separate my New Year’s resolutions for family and work.

I use a mind map when I make resolutions. It is creative. I write the year, then encircle it. I think of three words. For work, my three words for 2023 are transformation, experience, and dollars. Then, I will generate more ideas from each word.

Another exercise that I do, which I can do any month of the year, is Stop, Continue, and Start.

Most people consider the brainstorming session as the only step to writing a resolution. This is why most of the resolutions don’t have staying power. Later, I will show you ways to make your resolutions compelling.

If you are looking for New Year’s Resolution ideas, these will help you. Open each accordion pane to find resolutions that may inspire you

New Year's Resolution is a Fresh Start

What is a New Year’s Resolution?

A New Year’s Resolution is a declaration of what a person intends or resolves to do at the beginning of the year. Typically, people decide to stop doing undesirable traits or behaviors, continue doing good practices, and start working on personal goals or improving behaviors.

When you ask Filipinos, more than half will say they have New Year’s Resolution. About 1/3 say that they have written resolutions. You will find 100 examples of New Year’s Resolutions below.

Nearly half of those who don’t make New Year’s Resolution say it does not work.

Importance of New Year’s Resolution

Most people think that they need to do more these past years. The Covid-19 pandemic, for two years, made us anxious about the future. I remember that the New Year of 2021 was the first time most people stayed home. In January 2022, we recorded the highest number of Covid-19 infections.

But 2023 promises a better year. And once again, people talk about New Year’s Resolutions. And that’s good news.

There are mixed opinions as to the importance of resolutions. And I understand why.

Some people failed to continue what they started. Or they missed many opportunities of doing what they believed they should have done many New Year’s resolutions ago.

In 1996, Carlo declared that he would enroll again to finish his Master of Arts in Teaching. It was always a part of his New Year’s Resolutions. This year, he decided that pursuing it was of no use. The 30 units he earned will no longer be credited. He procrastinated. And procrastination sealed his fate, he believed.

A friend made a New Year’s Resolution to start jogging five years ago. So on January 4 last year, she started jogging around our neighborhood. She continued doing it for 15 more days. Then, she decided to pause for a week because of an important assignment. The one week became months. Yesterday, she said that she’d start again.

Thirty years ago, I “resolved” to write a book. I began with full enthusiasm, then eventually stopped. In Filipino, we call this habit Ningas Kugon. However, a friend commissioned me two years ago to write a book. I wrote that book in 16 days. I am confident I can write at least one book in 2023.

All New Year’s resolutions are aspirations for personal growth and development. And though you don’t have to wait for January 1 to start thinking about choosing the right things to do, a New Year’s resolution, as a tradition, reminds us about second chances, and the simple act of declaring our intentions helps us think deeply about the future.

Panata sa Bagong Taon

For Filipinos, a new year is a promise of a new life. It is more than just a day after December 31.

It is a fresh start.

In Filipino, New Year’s Resolution means panata sa bagong taon. It is not just an aspiration or a wish. It is a vow.

It is a fresh start. Whatever happened last year and the years before that have no hold on our future. We can choose to live the life we want.

Most New Year’s Resolutions aren’t fulfilled because of misunderstandings. But we will start behaving differently when we fully embrace that a new year is a fresh start and a resolution is a vow.

Why Some New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work

I have already given you three reasons why New Resolutions don’t work. And I have also given you an idea of why it works. So allow me to expound and expand.

Procrastination

The lack of willpower makes us delay. Procrastination is a silent killer. It murders our dreams without our notice.

People think that there is always tomorrow. We only have today; tomorrow is not promised to anyone.

If something is significant, it must be done today.

A resolution is a vow; it is not just a wish. A wish is something that may happen someday. A vow is your business today.

Ningas Kugon

Have you noticed that lifetime gym memberships are sold for a 50 percent discount during December and January? That’s because many people overestimate themselves.

A lifetime gym membership often gets used in three months.

If you are in Quezon Memorial Circle in the early mornings, you will see thousands of joggers. Some of them start at 5 am. But, during the first six weeks of the year, you’ll notice that the numbers are five times more than usual.

Ningas kugon is a lot better than procrastination. Starting something is already tricky. But success is measured by how we finished, not by how we started our games.

Ningas Kugon is often the result of a lack of commitment, discipline, and momentum.

Lack of Commitment

A committed person dedicates his time to a cause that truly matters to him. Those who cannot commit fail again and again.

A committed person displays patience, persistence, and perseverance. You can only be that person when you believe you can make things happen. Without that belief, there is no urgency. Without that belief, you will allow your fear to delay or stop you as soon as you face your first challenge.

Consider that a resolution is a vow to your future self.

Lack of Discipline

I see that even the most motivated people need to honor their resolutions. They can start, but they need to learn how to finish.

They work on many things but only sometimes on the most important thing.

A person with discipline does what they value most every day. They don’t allow their circumstances to dictate their actions.

New Year’s resolutions are good for us. They are part of the solution. Unfortunately, they don’t work when people don’t have the discipline to execute them.

Lack of Momentum

People need more momentum to finish what they start. There needs to be more than just doing the first step to walking a thousand miles. You need to follow the first with another step, and you need to keep moving until you reach a thousand miles.

Followthrough makes a breakthrough.

To create momentum, you need focus, consistency, and action.

By telling you why resolutions often do not work, can you tell how to make them work?

how to write a new year's resolution essay

People often write these New Year’s Resolution ideas. As I have mentioned, I used different methods to come up with my list, and brainstorming is just the first stage. If you will only copy any of these resolutions, it is more likely that you’ll do a ningas kugon.

Resolutions that get done are clear and compelling.

I will show you different ways to write clear and compelling New Year’s Resolutions.

Daig ng Maagap ang Masipag: Be A Proactive Hard Worker

These are the frequently asked questions that seldom get answers. If you want to get a better appreciation of these answers, you can read the whole article (if you have not yet done that).

Becoming a good person, working harder, and being more health conscious are Filipinos’ top 3 New Year’s resolutions. Becoming a good person is the most common topic in students’ New Year’s Resolution Essays. Working harder is our solution to having a good life. And being more health conscious may mean eating fruits and vegetables, losing weight, or gaining weight.

New Year’s Resolutions fail because of procrastination, ningas kugon, lack of clarity, lack of commitment, lack of discipline, and lack of momentum. Unfortunately, these are the same reasons my many goals fail too. Declaring what you resolve to stop, start, and continue doing is not enough; you need to follow through. A resolution, by definition, is a vow to do what you want to do no matter what.

The Tagalog for New Year’s Resolution is Panata sa Bagong Taon. A panata is a vow. For Filipinos, a new year celebration represents a fresh start. We vow to work harder to enjoy abundant lives.

Many people have changed their lives because they stick to their New Year’s resolutions. They kept their eyes on their aspirations and stuck to them. Though most who made New Year’s Resolutions stop working on them after six weeks, the problem is not in the resolutions but in the resolution of the person to make them happen. The intention to make change happen is the first step, which is a significant step to making change happen.

New Year’s Resolution Essay (Example)

As I have said, when I was in school, we were required to write our New Year’s Resolution essays in 200 words. I typically write more than that.

One way to write an essay is by using CONTINUE, STOP, and START. It is a very simple format that you anyone can follow.

The Year 2023 is a promise of a fresh start and bouncing forward. The last two years have been difficult because I could not go out. I was afraid, physically and psychologically.

The pandemic scare is not yet over. New variants of the virus appear. But for most of us vaccinated, there is confidence that we can finally fight the unknown.

There are things I know that I can change. And there are things that I must continue doing. My New Year’s Resolution is a manifesto, a declaration of what I want to continue, stop, and start doing in 2023.

CONTINUE I will continue to improve my skills in public speaking. Though I have been speaking for many years and earning money from it, there are many things that I need to learn. Public speaking turned my life around. And though there are many other opportunities to grow my business, I will continue speaking to inspire people and grow my business.

STOP I will stop spending time on Facebook, debating political issues with strangers, diehard supporters, and trolls. As much as I wanted to educate people and share with them what I know as a student of politics, I was doing it wrong.

Debating with strangers will not help. Adding my voice to a thousand who do not want to listen to each other won’t add value. I am not a follower. I am not a watcher.

I am a leader. And my platform is on the stage. I speak to lead, not just to add my voice.

I will expand my network to bring my message to many people. I will speak in schools to share my message with students and educators. I will talk at associations, conferences, and in company assemblies.

I will share a message of hope in my team-building programs, leadership training, and public seminars.

I will start speaking to change the world.

Mission Possible 2023

Your mission is to write your own New Year’s Resolution. Keep in mind that it is not just a wish. It is a panata , a vow that you have to your future self.

I recommend that you make your resolution visual. Take it seriously. Convert it into a personal development plan. Execute it. Then, teach others how to do it well.

250 Words Essay on My New Year Resolution

The advent of a new year always brings with it a sense of renewal and a chance to better ourselves. As we bid adieu to 2021 and welcome 2022, we inherently seek to improve aspects of our lives. My New Year resolution, therefore, is to cultivate mindfulness, a trait often overlooked in our fast-paced world.

The Importance of Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention to the present. It involves acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. The importance of mindfulness cannot be overstated, especially in the context of a world that is increasingly characterized by frenetic activity and stress.

Approach to Achieving Mindfulness

The first step to achieving mindfulness is to set aside a few minutes each day for quiet contemplation. This will involve disconnecting from digital devices and focusing on the present moment. This practice, while seemingly simple, requires a high degree of discipline and consistency, especially in the face of constant distractions.

Expected Outcomes

By practicing mindfulness, I hope to cultivate a more balanced and peaceful state of mind. This resolution will not only help me to manage stress more effectively but also enhance my cognitive abilities, thereby improving my academic performance.

In conclusion, my New Year resolution is a journey towards self-improvement and mental well-being. By cultivating mindfulness, I aim to create a more harmonious relationship with my environment and myself. As we step into 2022, I invite my fellow students to join me in this endeavor, as we strive to make the most of the opportunities that lie ahead.

500 Words Essay on My New Year Resolution

As the year draws to a close, a sense of introspection seizes us. We reflect on the past, contemplate the present, and envision the future. This is a time when many of us decide to make New Year resolutions. These resolutions are not just promises we make to ourselves but are commitments that guide us towards personal growth and self-improvement.

Understanding New Year Resolutions

New Year resolutions are essentially personal goals or objectives set at the beginning of a year. They serve as a roadmap to guide our actions and decisions throughout the year. The tradition of New Year resolutions dates back to ancient times, with the Romans making promises to the god Janus, after whom the month of January is named. Today, these resolutions have evolved into a self-imposed framework for personal development.

My New Year Resolution

My New Year resolution for the forthcoming year is to enhance my critical thinking and problem-solving skills. In an era of rapid technological advancement and unprecedented challenges, these two skills are of paramount importance. They not only help in academic pursuits but are also crucial in navigating the complexities of life.

Why Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving?

The ability to think critically allows us to evaluate information objectively, make rational decisions, and form reasoned arguments. It fosters creativity and innovation, empowering us to question established norms and venture into unexplored territories. On the other hand, problem-solving skills enable us to confront challenges head-on, devise effective solutions, and turn adversities into opportunities.

Implementing the Resolution

The implementation of this resolution involves a multi-pronged approach. Firstly, I plan to engage more actively in debates and discussions, both within and outside the academic sphere. This would expose me to diverse perspectives, thereby enhancing my critical thinking abilities. Secondly, I intend to participate in problem-solving competitions and workshops, which would provide a platform to apply and refine these skills.

Challenges and Overcoming Them

While the path towards achieving this resolution is fraught with challenges, they are not insurmountable. The primary hurdle is the inherent bias and preconceived notions that often cloud our judgement. Overcoming this requires conscious effort and constant self-reflection. Another challenge is the fear of failure, which can deter us from attempting to solve complex problems. This can be overcome by adopting a growth mindset, viewing failures as stepping stones towards success.

In conclusion, my New Year resolution is not just a promise to myself but a commitment towards personal growth. It involves enhancing my critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are crucial in today’s dynamic and complex world. Though the journey towards achieving this resolution is challenging, the rewards are well worth the effort. As the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, I will step into the new year with renewed resolve and unwavering determination to turn this resolution into reality.

Essays About New Year: 5 Examples and Prompts

The new year marks a new beginning for everyone. If you are writing essays about new year, you can start by reading some essay examples.

On new year’s day, everything resets. The calendar returns to January, the year’s first month, and the year starts anew. In the same way, most people see the start of a new year as the start of something better for themselves.

They want to improve themselves in specific ways by picking up good traits, being kinder, and trying to get out of bad habits and mannerisms; they set new year’s resolutions to attempt to break these habits. New year’s eve and new year’s day are undoubtedly some of the most important days of the year.

If you are writing an essay about new year, start by reading these examples.

1. The New Year: A Time for Reflection and a Time to Move Forward by Susanne Carlson

2. my new year’s resolution by francisco sáez, 3. my lonely new year’s eve party will consist of sadness, hope, and life-changing gratitude by dawn bevier, 4. the psychology of new years eve reflection by ben farrell, 5. why is new year’s eve so depressing by leila ettachfini, 1. what is the importance of new year’s resolutions, 2. different new year celebrations, 3. is new year a new beginning, 4. why some people find new year’s celebrations depressing, 5. are new year’s resolutions a waste of time.

“With reflection and attention to positive change, taking note of what we have learned on our journey up until now, can give us the opportunity to apply it to the future, to take with us what is helpful and to leave behind what is not.”

Carlson writes about the importance of reflection and learning from one’s mistakes for the new year ahead. She sees the new year as a time for new beginnings; she wants it to be the start of positive change for others, just as it has been for her. Reflection is essential, as it allows us to see what we can improve on and do better in the coming year.

“According to Goleman, the link between attention and excellence is behind almost all our achievements. Attention is needed not only to understand, learn or remember, but also to read the emotions of others, generate empathy and build good relationships. It is an asset that, despite being little known and despised, has great relevance in how we face life.”

Sáez briefly explains his new year’s resolution: to be more attentive. He wants to improve his attention and focus on forming better relationships with others, healthily using technology, and better his mental health. By reading the book Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence , he hopes to hone his attention for the new year and do better in the future. You might also be interested in these essays about celebration .

“And yes, I know this pandemic is not done with its destruction, but I also know we’re fighting back like hell and making progress. And that long-awaited day of celebration is now coming sooner rather than later. And when that day comes, I can’t help but believe that the world will be a better place. I know I will be a better person and millions of you will be as well.”

In this solemn piece, Bevier laments new year’s celebrations during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed millions. She is sad for those she has lost and the loss of the pre-pandemic life she loved. However, she hopes the next new year will not be like the last, and she has learned to be grateful for the more minor things in life. The pandemic has taught her a lot, but most importantly, to be optimistic for the future and to look ahead to the new year with hope, kindness, and gratitude.

“In reality, new years eve is no different to any other night of the year yet; we can’t help but assign some special meaning to the 31st of December. The psychological significance of the night can be a good thing, but it can also create tremendous anxiety for us.”

Farrell explains the psychological pressure of New Year’s Eve. This one night is no different from any other, but since it is the last one of the year, people feel the need to reflect not only on the day but the entire year. The imagery of big parties and “new beginnings” further add to the pressure, as people feel the need to have the “picture-perfect” new year. He says that while it can be helpful to use the beginning of the year as the start of positive change, it is more important to learn from one’s mistakes, no matter what time of the year.

“‘Anytime you let social convention dictate what you do rather than doing what feels best for you, you run the risk of anxiety, depression, and so on,’ says Dr. Kubiak. New Year’s Eve leaves this group with a tough choice: go out even though you really don’t want to or deal with the uncomfortable task of telling your friends that you’re going to sit this one out.”

Ettachfini explains new year’s eve from the perspective of those who get anxious or depressed during this time. Failure during the year, social anxiety, and the feeling of having to say goodbye to the year are all contributing factors. She cites information from Dr. Larry Kubiak, who says that depression and anxiety are normal, but it is essential to talk about them with a loved one to prevent their consuming of your life.

International women's day 2024 hero banner purple

This International Women’s Day, 8 March 2024, join the United Nations in celebrating under the theme Invest in women: Accelerate progress .

The world is facing many crises, ranging from geopolitical conflicts to soaring poverty levels and the escalating impacts of climate change. These challenges can only be addressed by solutions that empower women. By investing in women, we can spark change and speed the transition towards a healthier, safer, and more equal world for all.

Needed per year to achieve gender equality

An additional $360 billion is needed per year to achieve gender equality.

20% to boost GDP per capita could be achieved by closing the gender gap

Closing gender gaps in employment could boost GDP per capita by 20 per cent.

300 million jobs created by 2030 by investing in care services

Closing gaps in care and expanding services with decent jobs could spark almost 300 million jobs by 2035.

If current trends continue, more than  342 million women and girls could be living extreme poverty  by 2030. To ensure women’s needs and priorities are considered, governments must prioritize gender-responsive financing and increase public spending on essential services and social protection.

Policymakers must also value, recognize, and account for the vital contribution women make to economies worldwide through paid and unpaid care work.  Women spend around three times more time on unpaid care work than men and if these activities were assigned a monetary value they would account for more than 40 per cent of GDP .

Investing in women and championing gender equality turbocharges a future where everyone in society can thrive, creating a world of boundless opportunity and empowerment for all.

I Was a Heretic at The New York Times

I did what I was hired to do, and I paid for it.

A silhouette made out of newspaper

Updated at 5 p.m. ET on March 5, 2024

O n one of my first days at The New York Times , I went to an orientation with more than a dozen other new hires. We had to do an icebreaker: Pick a Starburst out of a jar and then answer a question. My Starburst was pink, I believe, and so I had to answer the pink prompt, which had me respond with my favorite sandwich. Russ & Daughters’ Super Heebster came to mind, but I figured mentioning a $19 sandwich wasn’t a great way to win new friends. So I blurted out, “The spicy chicken sandwich from Chick-fil-A,” and considered the ice broken.

The HR representative leading the orientation chided me: “We don’t do that here. They hate gay people.” People started snapping their fingers in acclamation. I hadn’t been thinking about the fact that Chick-fil-A was transgressive in liberal circles for its chairman’s opposition to gay marriage. “Not the politics, the chicken,” I quickly said, but it was too late. I sat down, ashamed.

As far back as I can remember, my parents have subscribed to the Times . As a kid, I’d run out to grab the newspaper from the driveway most mornings, and we’d do the crossword puzzle together on the weekends. When I got a job in the Times Opinion section in 2019, they were thrilled—the last time someone in my family had had anything to do with the paper, it was for my grandmother’s run-in with the law in 1986. In an act of civil disobedience, she had chained herself to her hot-dog cart in Houston after city officials refused to give her a food-vendor license. (She ultimately beat the ticket .)

Graeme Wood: The move to eradicate disagreement

I was glad that someone like me—with a background writing for right-of-center publications—was welcome at the paper of record. After college, I’d landed a fellowship on the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal , and then a writing job at The Weekly Standard . The Standard was conservative yet unrelentingly anti–Donald Trump, and happy to pick fights with Republicans. The story I’m most proud of writing there was one exposing the racist remarks of then-Representative Steve King of Iowa.

James Bennet, the Times ’ editorial-page editor, and James Dao, the op-ed editor, were committed to publishing heterodox views. From my time at the Standard , I had contacts on the political right and a good sense of its ideological terrain. The Times had hired me to provide research for columnists and to solicit and edit newsy, against-the-grain op-eds. I brushed off my discomfort about the office politics and focused on work. Our mandate was to present readers with “intelligent discussion from all shades of opinion,” as the founder of the modern New York Times , Adolph Ochs, put it in 1896. This meant publishing arguments that would challenge readers’ assumptions, and perspectives that they may not otherwise encounter in their daily news diet. I edited essays by the mayor of a small city in Kentucky, a New York City subway conductor on her work during COVID , a military mother on improving life on bases . I also sought out expressly conservative views.

Ochs was not, of course, calling for publishing just any opinion. An op-ed had to be smart and written in good faith, and not used to settle scores, derive personal benefit, or engineer some desired outcome. It had to be authentic. In other words, our goal was supposed to be journalistic, rather than activist.

This, I learned in my two years at the Times , was not a goal that everyone shared.

B eing a conservative —or at least being considered one—at the Times was a strange experience. I often found myself asking questions like “Doesn’t all of this talk of ‘voter suppression’ on the left sound similar to charges of ‘voter fraud’ on the right?” only to realize how unwelcome such questions were. By asking, I’d revealed that I wasn’t on the same team as my colleagues, that I didn’t accept as an article of faith the liberal premise that voter suppression was a grave threat to liberal democracy while voter fraud was entirely fake news.

Or take the Hunter Biden laptop story: Was it truly “ unsubstantiated ,” as the paper kept saying? At the time, it had been substantiated, however unusually, by Rudy Giuliani. Many of my colleagues were clearly worried that lending credence to the laptop story could hurt the electoral prospects of Joe Biden and the Democrats. But starting from a place of party politics and assessing how a particular story could affect an election isn’t journalism. Nor is a vague unease with difficult subjects. “The state of Israel makes me very uncomfortable,” a colleague once told me. This was something I was used to hearing from young progressives on college campuses, but not at work.

There was a sense that publishing the occasional conservative voice made the paper look centrist. But I soon realized that the conservative voices we published tended to be ones agreeing with the liberal line. It was also clear that right-of-center submissions were treated differently. They faced a higher bar for entry, more layers of editing, and greater involvement of higher-ups. Standard practice held that when a writer submitted an essay to an editor, the editor would share that draft with colleagues via an email distribution list. Then we would all discuss it. But many of my colleagues didn’t want their name attached to op-eds advancing conservative arguments, and early-to-mid-career staffers would routinely oppose their publication. After senior leaders in the Opinion section realized that these articles were not getting a fair shake, the process evolved. Articles that were potentially “controversial” (read: conservative) were sent directly to the most senior editors on the page, to be scrutinized by the leadership rather than the whole department.

The tension between journalistic and activist impulses existed in newsrooms before the spring of 2020. But it deepened after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, and the protests and riots that gripped America in the subsequent weeks. The account of how the Times came to publish an op-ed by Senator Tom Cotton calling for the military to quell riots, and of the controversy that followed, has been told in many places, most recently by Bennet, my former boss, in a lengthy essay for 1843 , The Economist ’s magazine . I was the primary editor of that op-ed, under the direction of my more senior colleagues.

I was working remotely from Los Angeles at the time and remember walking down Fairfax Avenue a few days earlier. Everything was trashed. Gang signs had been scrawled on the walls of stores; graffiti on a bank branch read hang bankers ; stores with Black Lives Matter signs had been ransacked. Police cars and some stores had been burned nearby, and I could smell the ash in the air. Notably, 1,000 National Guardsmen had been called in to Los Angeles to restore calm.

The Times editorial board weighed in on the Black Lives Matter protests, articulating complete support for their mission:

In too many police departments there is a culture of impunity. Until that culture is changed, there will continue to be rightful rage at its existence. Rather than just condemning or applauding protesters, Americans should listen closely to what they’re demanding.

Not all of the demonstrations were peaceful. Police stations in Minneapolis and Portland, Oregon , were set on fire. Police cars were firebombed in New York City, and officers were shot in St. Louis. Many people felt that things were spiraling out of control.

On June 1, Tom Cotton, a former Army officer and the junior senator from Arkansas, was advancing the argument—in exchanges with President Trump and on his Twitter feed —that the president should invoke the 1807 Insurrection Act to deploy, “if necessary, the 10th Mountain, 82nd Airborne, 1st Cav, 3rd Infantry—whatever it takes to restore order. No quarter for insurrectionists, anarchists, rioters, and looters.” The “no quarter” element caused alarm—did Cotton mean “leave no survivor,” as the phrase’s use in a military context could suggest? “A no quarter order is a war crime,” the conservative commentator and former Army lawyer David French responded . Cotton clarified, tweeting : “If you say that someone was given no quarter, you mean that they were not treated kindly by someone who had power or control over them,” with a link to that definition in a dictionary. Not everyone was convinced.

The next day, Cotton’s office pitched me an op-ed about Twitter threatening to lock his account if he didn’t delete the original tweet. I sent the pitch to Dao, the op-ed editor. Rather than focus on the side issue of Twitter’s content-moderation policies, Dao replied, Cotton’s essay should be about the actual substance of his argument: In this case, does the president have the authority to invoke the Insurrection Act? Should he? Other editors who were consulted on the pitch found that argument worthwhile. I conveyed the reformulated idea to Cotton’s office, and his staff filed a draft early the next morning. We also had plans, as was our custom, to run arguments against Cotton’s view. And we already had .

I was given the job of fact-checking and line-editing. Among other edits, I inserted a line making clear the distinction between peaceful protesters and law-breaking looters. I deleted several objectionable sentences and cleared up factual questions: all pretty standard in the work of an op-ed editor. In addition to my own edits, I incorporated edits conveyed by Bennet, Dao, and the deputy op-ed editor, Clay Risen; then a copy editor went over the essay. Over the course of this process, I went back and forth with Cotton’s staff several times, and we exchanged multiple drafts.

I had one more task to take care of. Cotton’s office had emailed me several photos that they wanted to see published alongside the op-ed, showing times when the same legal doctrine had been invoked in the past. One was of U.S. troops enforcing the desegregation of the University of Mississippi in 1962. I sent these to a photo editor, Jeffrey Henson Scales, and asked him to “consider” them. He wrote me back to say, “A false equivalence, but historical images are there now,” meaning he’d added them to the story file in the system. I thanked him and added a “confusion” emoji, in case he wanted to expand on what he meant. He replied by sending me the emoji of a black box, representing solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

At about 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, Cotton’s office signed off on the article. Risen and Dao then approved publication.

Immediately, the op-ed caused an outcry within the Times . Dozens of the paper’s employees retweeted an identical, or near-identical, statement, workshopped on Slack and rubber-stamped by the NewsGuild of New York, which represents the newspaper’s union (I was a member), claiming that “ running this put Black @nytimes staff in danger .”

It was an outlandish claim but next to impossible to rebut—how can you tell someone who says they’re not safe that, in fact, they’re fine? Did they know that in some states, troops had already been deployed to protect public safety? Were we reading the same op-ed? Were they serious?

Leadership at the paper seemed to think so; the claim had the trappings of a workplace-safety and racial-justice issue. The Times Guild immediately started organizing against the op-ed and those responsible for it. “Is there something else we can do? I am behind whatever action we might take,” wrote Susan Hopkins, a newsroom editor who now helps run the front page, in the Guild Slack channel. By the end of the week, the Guild had a letter with more than 1,000 signatures demanding changes to the Opinion section. (When I pointed out to a Guild representative that its activism was in effect calling for one of its own members to face repercussions, he seemed surprised, and apologized, though the Guild did not meaningfully change its public tack.)

A diplomatic correspondent, Edward Wong, wrote in an email to colleagues that he typically chose not to quote Cotton in his own stories because his comments “often represent neither a widely held majority opinion nor a well-thought-out minority opinion.” This message was revealing. A Times reporter saying that he avoids quoting a U.S. senator? What if the senator is saying something important? What sorts of minority opinions met this correspondent’s standards for being well thought-out? In any event, the opinion Cotton was expressing in his op-ed, whatever one thinks of it, had, according to polling cited in the essay, the support of more than half of American voters. It was not a minority opinion.

Soon a new channel was created on Slack to discuss the op-ed. In a matter of hours, more than 1,500 employees had joined it, and there were thousands of messages plotting next steps and calling for a retraction, an editors’ note, firings.

Many colleagues wrote to me directly to express their anger. A few offered support. “Hey fwiw I disagree with Cotton but I think that piece was a traditional op-ed from the other side. Hope you’re OK,” a senior staff editor told me.

One columnist suggested that I “take notes.” I did.

O n Thursday , June 4, a reporter on the business desk named Edmund Lee contacted me. “So, we’re reporting out the Cotton Op-Ed,” he wrote. “We know from sources you were the principal writer.” I reached out to Dao for advice on how to handle this ludicrous claim, and did as he suggested. “I’ll have to send you to corp comms,” I wrote to Lee. “Off the record: I can categorically tell you that I did not write the Op-Ed.”

Later that day, the Times published a story by Lee and two other reporters. “The Op-Ed was edited by Adam Rubenstein,” the article said. It devoted five paragraphs to my interaction with the photo editor, who had, against company policy, shared with the reporters some of our Slack messages.

Mr. Scales raised an objection. “A false equivalence, but historical images are there now,” he wrote to Mr. Rubenstein on Slack, the internal messaging software used by Times employees. “Yeah, there are a few in there,” Mr. Rubenstein responded.

The full exchange made clear that I had been talking about the photos; presented this way, many read it as a confession that I believed the article was drawing false equivalences. Indeed, after this account came out, The Washington Post described me as having “shrugged off accuracy issues.”

That wasn’t the only issue with Lee’s story. As Bennet noted in his essay for 1843 , the article claimed that Cotton advocated suppressing “protests against police violence.” The op-ed didn’t argue that. If it had, we would not have published it. In fact, Cotton’s essay was explicit in distinguishing between protests and the undeniable violence and looting: “A majority who seek to protest peacefully shouldn’t be confused with bands of miscreants.” (When asked for comment by The Atlantic , Danielle Rhoades Ha, a Times spokesperson, pointed to the op-ed’s language calling for a show of force to “deter lawbreakers.” She wrote, “‘Lawbreakers’ would have included people marching without permits, refusing to disperse and blocking the streets. A fair reading of that suggests that he was in favor of military intervention against those breaking curfew or refusing to disperse as well as looters and rioters.” At the time, police cars were burning in glass-strewn streets. I assure you, when Cotton wrote “lawbreakers,” he wasn’t talking about curfews.)

At first the paper’s publisher, A. G. Sulzberger, had defended the choice to publish Cotton’s op-ed, though he added that he was listening to everyone’s concerns “with an open mind.” By that night, he’d caved and was claiming that a review had been conducted that found that “a rushed editorial process” was responsible for an op-ed that “did not meet our standards.” For the record, I—the editor on whom the paper had pinned responsibility—was never interviewed as part of any formal review.

Later, after poring over the Slack channels, I realized something more surprising: Rachel Abrams, one of Lee’s co-authors on the article, had been a vocal internal critic of Cotton’s op-ed. “How can they be sending us emails telling us they’re keeping us safe and care about our physical and mental well-being and then publish this,” she had posted on Slack, later adding, “I think it’s good that a lot of us will put our names on a strong condemnation.” (She later stated that, as a media reporter, she should not have said this, but that there was no issue with her factual reporting for the story.)

I watched as factitious accounts of the publication process and the op-ed itself made their way into the paper’s own coverage and beyond. A narrative had emerged on Slack: that I had gone rogue and published the article without any involvement of higher-ups. Of course this was false, but that untruth nevertheless became central to the story. I had followed all the rules, but I had the sinking feeling that not all of my colleagues felt similarly constrained.

T he debate on Slack seemed interminable. Stephanie Saul, a Pulitzer Prize–winning education reporter, was one of the few people who expressed support for publishing a range of views on the op-ed page. Margaret Lyons, a television critic, countered: “We don’t run pieces where serial killers tell us murdering is actually fun and great.”

On the morning of June 5, the company assembled for a virtual town hall. As Bennet wrote in 1843 , this was an opportunity for him to apologize (he didn’t), and for Sulzberger and Dean Baquet, then the Times ’ executive editor, to get ahold of the ship (they didn’t). Afterward, one reporter, Liam Stack, wrote to colleagues, “This rhetoric of ‘a moment of deep reflection and listening’ is just making people more angry.” The pressure on management would not relent.

That night, an editors’ note was appended to the op-ed. The note contains many errors, among them that the editorial process had been “rushed,” that “senior editors were not sufficiently involved,” and that facts in the article weren’t quite right. Never mind, of course, that it wasn’t rushed, that senior editors were deeply involved, and that there were no correctable errors. The note criticized Cotton’s claim that “radicals like antifa are infiltrating protest marches,” alleging that it had “not been substantiated.” But the attorney general was on the record saying that antifa had done just that—a fact the Times eventually confirmed for itself.

“A more pathetic collection of 317 words would be difficult to assemble,” Erik Wemple, the media critic of The Washington Post , wrote a few years later about the editor’s note.

The next morning I got a call from Sulzberger. I warned him that every action he was taking—the town halls, the public statements, the editors’ note, and the Times ’ own erroneous reporting—was putting me, my colleagues, and Sulzberger himself in a worse position. He apologized for the mess, and for my being caught in the middle of it, and said he’d “stew on” what he could do.

I never heard from him again.

The same day, Sulzberger asked Bennet to resign. “Wow,” Meghan Louttit, who is now a deputy editor in the newsroom, wrote on Slack. “James’s resignation makes me somewhat … Hopeful?” and added that the firing, in her view, represented “a first step.”

But a first step toward what? During an Opinion all-hands meeting, a liberal columnist asked Sulzberger about the precedent that firing Bennet set: Will you stand by me if people around here and on Twitter don’t like one of my columns?

Every now and then, the group that handles security for the Times would check in on me to make sure I was safe. Ever since the paper had named me as the person responsible for publishing Cotton’s op-ed, I had been receiving alarming threats.

I felt in those days like I was in a foreign country where I didn’t speak the language and was on trial for a manufactured offense. I still thought that if I could only explain that the regular process had been followed, that the op-ed had called for protesters not to be harmed but instead protected, the situation could still be resolved.

Maybe I should have seen this all coming. A few months earlier, my former colleague Bari Weiss had predicted that Bennet wouldn’t last long: “He is doing what they claim to want but they don’t want it,” she told me. Once Bennet resigned, a new regime came into Opinion. Dao was reassigned to the national desk. Clay Risen moved to Politics, then to Obituaries. New policies were enacted. A “See something, say something” rule was affirmed, and a Slack channel called “op-sensitivity” was created, in which editors were encouraged to raise concerns about one another’s stories. By December, I had decided to leave the paper. It had been made clear to me, in a variety of ways, that I had no future there.

Caitlin Flanagan: Colleges are lying to their students

In the years preceding the Cotton op-ed, the Times had published op-eds by authoritarians including Muammar Qaddafi , Recep Tayyip Erdoğan , and Vladimir Putin . The year of the Cotton op-ed, it also published the Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece Regina Ip’s defense of China’s murderous crackdown on prodemocracy protests in Hong Kong, Moustafa Bayoumi’s seeming apologia of cultural and ethnic resentments of Jews, and an article by a leader of the Taliban, Sirajuddin Haqqani . None of those caused an uproar. Last year, the page published an essay by the Hamas-appointed mayor of Gaza City , and few seemed to mind. But whether the paper is willing to publish conservative views on divisive political issues, such as abortion rights and the Second Amendment, remains an open question.

I’m not sure the relative calm can be attributed to the new leadership or new policies; more likely the cause was enough blood having been let, and Donald Trump having left office (however unwillingly). On January 6, 2021, few people at The New York Times remarked on the fact that liberals were cheering on the deployment of National Guardsmen to stop rioting at the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., the very thing Tom Cotton had advocated.

(In a statement, Rhoades Ha, the Times spokesperson, told The Atlantic that the Opinion section’s “commitment to publishing diverse views—including those that are unpopular, controversial or heterodox—is unwavering.” She doubled down on the Times ’ claims that the Cotton op-ed “did not hold up to scrutiny” and that senior leaders weren’t involved enough. “None of that,” she added at the end, “was Adam’s fault. As a junior member of the team, he deserved better editorial support and oversight.” Please. What I and others really deserved were leaders who didn’t buckle under pressure and sacrifice their own to placate a loud and insurgent group at the paper.)

All of this happened in the first five years of my career. In the worst of those days, I was attacked not only by colleagues, but also by acquaintances and friends. One friend contacted my girlfriend of seven years, asking whether she would take a stand against “Adam’s role in promoting fascism.” She—the tough-as-nails daughter of Peruvian immigrants who grew up hearing stories of her parents fleeing the Shining Path—ignored it, and some eight weeks later, we were engaged.

As painful as it was in my mid-20s to think that my journalistic career would end as a result of this episode, it’s even more painful to think that newsrooms haven’t learned the right lessons from it. If the Times or any other outlet aims to cover America as it is and not simply how they want it to be, they should recruit more editors and reporters with conservative backgrounds, and then support them in their work. They should hire journalists, not activists. And they should remember that heterodoxy isn’t heresy.

By telling the story the Times told about Cotton’s op-ed, the paper seemed to avoid confronting the tough reality that despite many staffers’ objections, the article was well within the bounds of reasonable discourse. What did it mean for the paper and its coverage that Times employees were so violently opposed to publishing a mainstream American view?

It was clear to me then and it’s clear to me now that the fight over Cotton’s op-ed was never about safety, or the facts, or the editing, or even the argument, but control of the paper and who had it. In the end, all that mattered was that an example had been made.

This article originally misidentified Adolph Ochs as the founder of The Times.
