How Long Should a College Essay Be? | Word Count Tips

Published on September 29, 2021 by Kirsten Courault . Revised on June 1, 2023.

Most college application portals specify a word count range for your essay, and you should stay within 10% of the upper limit. If no word count is specified, we advise keeping your essay between 400 and 600 words.

You should aim to stay under the specified limit to show you can follow directions and write concisely. However, if you write too little, it may seem like you are unwilling or unable to write a thoughtful and developed essay.

Table of contents

Word count guidelines for different application types, how to shorten your essay, how to expand your essay, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about college application essays.

Each university has a different suggested or required word count depending on which application portal it uses.

Some application portals will allow you to exceed the word count limit, but admissions officers have limited time and energy to read longer essays. Other application portals have a strict limit and will not allow you to exceed it.

For example, in the Common App , the portal will not allow you to submit more than 650 words. Some colleges using the Common App will allow you to submit less than 250 words, but this is too short for a well-developed essay.

For scholarship essays , diversity essays , and “Why this college?” essays , word count limits vary. Make sure to verify and respect each prompt’s limit.

Don’t worry too much about word count until the revision stage ; focusing on word count while writing may hinder your creativity. Once you have finished a draft, you can start shortening or expanding your essay if necessary.

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

On some application portals, you can exceed the word limit, but there are good reasons to stay within it:

  • To maintain the admissions officer’s attention
  • To show you can follow directions
  • To demonstrate you can write concisely

Here are some strategies for shortening your essay.

Stay on the main point

It’s good to use vivid imagery, but only include relevant details. Cut any sentences with tangents or unnecessary information.

My father taught me how to strategically hold the marshmallow pierced by a twig at a safe distance from the flames to make sure it didn’t get burned, ensuring a golden brown exterior.

Typically, my father is glued to his computer since he’s a software engineer at Microsoft. But that night, he was the marshmallow master. We waited together as the pillowy sugary goodness caramelized into gooey delight. Good example: Sticks to the point On our camping trip to Yosemite, my family spent time together, away from technology and routine responsibility.

My favorite part was roasting s’mores around the campfire. My father taught me how to hold the marshmallow at a safe distance from the flames, ensuring a golden brown exterior.

These college essay examples also demonstrate how you can cut your essay down to size.

Eliminate wordiness

Delete unnecessary words that clutter your essay. If a word doesn’t add value, cut it.

Here are some common examples of wordiness and how to fix them.

Use a paraphrasing tool

If you want to save time, you can make use of a paraphrasing tool . Within the tool you can select the “short” mode to rewrite your essay in less words. Just copy your text in the tool and within 1 click you’ll have shortened your essay.

If you’re significantly under the word count, you’re wasting the opportunity to show depth and authenticity in your essay. Admissions officers may see your short essay as a sign that you’re unable to write a detailed, insightful narrative about yourself.

Here are some strategies for expanding your essay.

Show detailed examples, and don’t tell generic stories

You should include detailed examples that can’t be replicated by another student. Use vivid imagery, the five senses, and specific objects to transport the reader into your story.

Reveal your feelings and insight

If your essay lacks vulnerability or self-reflection, share your feelings and the lessons you’ve learned.

Be creative with how you express your feelings; rather than simply writing “I’m happy,” use memorable images to help the reader clearly visualize your happiness. Similarly, for insight, include the follow-up actions from your lessons learned; instead of claiming “I became a hard worker,” explain what difficult tasks you accomplished as a result of what you learned.

 Communication

  • How to end an email
  • Ms, mrs, miss
  • How to start an email
  • I hope this email finds you well
  • Hope you are doing well

 Parts of speech

  • Personal pronouns
  • Conjunctions

Most college application portals specify a word count range for your essay, and you should stay within 10% of the upper limit to write a developed and thoughtful essay.

You should aim to stay under the specified word count limit to show you can follow directions and write concisely. However, don’t write too little, as it may seem like you are unwilling or unable to write a detailed and insightful narrative about yourself.

If no word count is specified, we advise keeping your essay between 400 and 600 words.

If you’re struggling to reach the word count for your college essay, add vivid personal stories or share your feelings and insight to give your essay more depth and authenticity.

If your college essay goes over the word count limit , cut any sentences with tangents or irrelevant details. Delete unnecessary words that clutter your essay.

You can speed up this process by shortening and smoothing your writing with a paraphrasing tool . After that, you can use the summarizer to shorten it even more.

There is no set number of paragraphs in a college admissions essay . College admissions essays can diverge from the traditional five-paragraph essay structure that you learned in English class. Just make sure to stay under the specified word count .

College Essays

Figuring out your college essay can be one of the most difficult parts of applying to college. Even once you've read the prompt and picked a topic, you might wonder: if you write too much or too little, will you blow your chance of admission? How long should a college essay be?

Whether you're a terse writer or a loquacious one, we can advise you on college essay length. In this guide, we'll cover what the standard college essay length is, how much word limits matter, and what to do if you aren't sure how long a specific essay should be.

How Long Is a College Essay? First, Check the Word Limit

You might be used to turning in your writing assignments on a page-limit basis (for example, a 10-page paper). While some colleges provide page limits for their college essays, most use a word limit instead. This makes sure there's a standard length for all the essays that a college receives, regardless of formatting or font.

In the simplest terms, your college essay should be pretty close to, but not exceeding, the word limit in length. Think within 50 words as the lower bound, with the word limit as the upper bound. So for a 500-word limit essay, try to get somewhere between 450-500 words. If they give you a range, stay within that range.

College essay prompts usually provide the word limit right in the prompt or in the instructions.

For example, the University of Illinois says :

"You'll answer two to three prompts as part of your application. The questions you'll answer will depend on whether you're applying to a major or to our undeclared program , and if you've selected a second choice . Each response should be approximately 150 words."

As exemplified by the University of Illinois, the shortest word limits for college essays are usually around 150 words (less than half a single-spaced page). Rarely will you see a word limit higher than around 650 words (over one single-spaced page). College essays are usually pretty short: between 150 and 650 words. Admissions officers have to read a lot of them, after all!

body-scale-cc0

Weigh your words carefully, because they are limited!

How Flexible Is the Word Limit?

But how flexible is the word limit? What if your poignant anecdote is just 10 words too long—or 100 too short?

Can I Go Over the Word Limit?

If you are attaching a document and you need one or two extra words, you can probably get away with exceeding the word limit by such a small amount. Some colleges will actually tell you that exceeding the word limit by 1-2 words is fine. However, I advise against exceeding the word limit unless it's explicitly allowed for a few reasons:

First, you might not be able to. If you have to copy-paste it into a text box, your essay might get cut off and you'll have to trim it down anyway.

If you exceed the word limit in a noticeable way, the admissions counselor may just stop reading your essay past that point. This is not good for you.

Following directions is actually a very important part of the college application process. You need to follow directions to get your letters of recommendation, upload your essays, send supplemental materials, get your test scores sent, and so on and so forth. So it's just a good general rule to follow whatever instructions you've been given by the institution. Better safe than sorry!

Can I Go Under the Word Limit?

If you can truly get your point across well beneath the word limit, it's probably fine. Brevity is not necessarily a bad thing in writing just so long as you are clear, cogent, and communicate what you want to.

However, most college essays have pretty tight word limits anyways. So if you're writing 300 words for an essay with a 500-word limit, ask yourself: is there anything more you could say to elaborate on or support your points? Consult with a parent, friend, or teacher on where you could elaborate with more detail or expand your points.

Also, if the college gives you a word range, you absolutely need to at least hit the bottom end of the range. So if you get a range from the institution, like 400-500 words, you need to write at least 400 words. If you write less, it will come across like you have nothing to say, which is not an impression you want to give.

body-writing-computer-orange-write

What If There Is No Word Limit?

Some colleges don't give you a word limit for one or more of your essay prompts. This can be a little stressful, but the prompts generally fall into a few categories:

Writing Sample

Some colleges don't provide a hard-and-fast word limit because they want a writing sample from one of your classes. In this case, a word limit would be very limiting to you in terms of which assignments you could select from.

For an example of this kind of prompt, check out essay Option B at Amherst :

"Submit a graded paper from your junior or senior year that best represents your writing skills and analytical abilities. We are particularly interested in your ability to construct a tightly reasoned, persuasive argument that calls upon literary, sociological or historical evidence. You should NOT submit a laboratory report, journal entry, creative writing sample or in-class essay."

While there is usually no word limit per se, colleges sometimes provide a general page guideline for writing samples. In the FAQ for Option B , Amherst clarifies, "There is no hard-and-fast rule for official page limit. Typically, we anticipate a paper of 4-5 pages will provide adequate length to demonstrate your analytical abilities. Somewhat longer papers can also be submitted, but in most cases should not exceed 8-10 pages."

So even though there's no word limit, they'd like somewhere in the 4-10 pages range. High school students are not usually writing papers that are longer than 10 pages anyways, so that isn't very limiting.

Implicit Length Guideline

Sometimes, while there's no word (or even page) limit, there's still an implicit length guideline. What do I mean by this?

See, for example, this Western Washington University prompt :

“Describe one or more activities you have been involved in that have been particularly meaningful. What does your involvement say about the communities, identities or causes that are important to you?”

While there’s no page or word limit listed here, further down on page the ‘essay tips’ section explains that “ most essay responses are about 500 words, ” though “this is only a recommendation, not a firm limit.” This gives you an idea of what’s reasonable. A little longer or shorter than 500 words would be appropriate here. That’s what I mean by an “implicit” word limit—there is a reasonable length you could go to within the boundaries of the prompt.

body-coffee-cc0

But what's the proper coffee-to-paragraph ratio?

Treasure Hunt

There is also the classic "treasure hunt" prompt. No, it's not a prompt about a treasure hunt. It's a prompt where there are no length guidelines given, but if you hunt around on the rest of the website you can find length guidelines.

For example, the University of Chicago provides seven "Extended Essay" prompts . You must write an essay in response to one prompt of your choosing, but nowhere on the page is there any guidance about word count or page limit.

However, many colleges provide additional details about their expectations for application materials, including essays, on FAQ pages, which is true of the University of Chicago. On the school’s admissions Frequently Asked Questions page , they provide the following length guidelines for the supplemental essays:

“We suggest that you note any word limits for Coalition or Common Application essays; however, there are no strict word limits on the UChicago Supplement essays. For the extended essay (where you choose one of several prompts), we suggest that you aim for around 650 words. While we won't, as a rule, stop reading after 650 words, we're only human and cannot promise that an overly wordy essay will hold our attention indefinitely. For the “Why UChicago?” essay, we suggest about 250-500 words. The ideas in your writing matter more than the exact number of words you use!”

So there you go! You want to be (loosely) in the realm of 650 for the extended essay, and 250-500 words for the “Why UChicago?” essay.

Help! There Really Is No Guidance on Length

If you really can't find any length guidelines anywhere on the admissions website and you're at a loss, I advise calling the admissions office. They may not be able to give you an exact number (in fact, they probably won't), but they will probably at least be able to tell you how long most of the essays they see are. (And keep you from writing a panicked, 20-page dissertation about your relationship with your dog).

In general, 500 words or so is pretty safe for a college essay. It's a fairly standard word limit length, in fact. (And if you're wondering, that's about a page and a half double-spaced.) 500 words is long enough to develop a basic idea while still getting a point across quickly—important when admissions counselors have thousands of essays to read!

guy-with-magnifying-glass

"See? It says 500 words right there in tiny font!"

The Final Word: How Long Should a College Essay Be?

The best college essay length is usually pretty straightforward: you want to be right under or at the provided word limit. If you go substantially past the word limit, you risk having your essay cut off by an online application form or having the admissions officer just not finish it. And if you're too far under the word limit, you may not be elaborating enough.

What if there is no word limit? Then how long should a college essay be? In general, around 500 words is a pretty safe approximate word amount for a college essay—it's one of the most common word limits, after all!

Here's guidance for special cases and hunting down word limits:

If it's a writing sample of your graded academic work, the length either doesn't matter or there should be some loose page guidelines.

There also may be implicit length guidelines. For example, if a prompt says to write three paragraphs, you'll know that writing six sentences is definitely too short, and two single-spaced pages is definitely too long.

You might not be able to find length guidelines in the prompt, but you could still hunt them up elsewhere on the website. Try checking FAQs or googling your chosen school name with "admissions essay word limit."

If there really is no word limit, you can call the school to try to get some guidance.

With this advice, you can be sure you've got the right college essay length on lockdown!

Often, the phrase “word limit” causes panic among students. After all, if an essay is too long or too short, your grade will be lowered. However, in reality, there’s nothing to worry about. When it comes to words, limitations are beneficial for both the students and the professors.

Let’s see what exactly it means.

Many people believe that the longer an essay is, the better. However, according to Frontiers, research shows that it’s a bias that couldn’t be further from the truth. A perfect-length paper is one that allows students to express their ideas and showcase their knowledge fully while keeping it clean and simple.

What Influences Essay Length

Various factors determine the length of an essay. Here are the most important ones:

Just in 1 hour! We will write you a plagiarism-free paper in hardly more than 1 hour

Let’s start with the essentials. Usually, assignment length is given as a number of words rather than pages. Unless your supervisor or instructor mentions any specific limitations, it’s acceptable to be 10% below or above the word limit.

It’s also worth knowing the 80/20 rule . According to it, the body should constitute 80% of the text, while the intro and the conclusion take up the remaining 20%.

Keep reading to learn more about the recommended length of each essay part. The main numbers are shown in the table below:

How Long Should an Introduction Be?

An introduction is the first section and the face of your essay. For that reason, it needs to be compelling and well-thought-out. Usually, it consists of 3 to 5 sentences or 50 to 80 words .

An introduction must have a hook, some background information, and a thesis statement. While the attention grabber and the thesis are usually brief, you may need 2 to 3 sentences for the background. To avoid going overboard, try to stay on topic and don’t add any filler.

Receive a plagiarism-free paper tailored to your instructions. Cut 20% off your first order!

How Long Is a Body Paragraph in an Essay?

The length of a body paragraph may vary. Sometimes, it can be limited to a single sentence. In other cases, it may take up a whole page. Usually, it’s recommended to have between 80 and 200 words (5-8 sentences) per body paragraph.

Since the paper’s body contains the most information, it’s necessary to explain and support your ideas properly. That’s why it’s no big deal if your body paragraphs go slightly over the word limit.

How Many Body Paragraphs Should Be in an Essay?

Like the word count, the number of paragraphs is determined by the type of paper and its topic. The minimum is 1. Generally, however, the body consists of 3-5 paragraphs , 1 for each argument.

To improve your paper’s structure, ensure that there are as many paragraphs as there are points in your thesis statement. Each one should have a purpose and support your arguments. If there’s any fluff, it’s better to get rid of it.

How Long Should a Conclusion Be?

Like the introduction, the conclusion consists of 50-80 words . It’s essential to keep it simple and only mention the central ideas. A weak concluding sentence may affect the reader’s understanding of the topic and spoil the overall impression of your paper.

🤔 How to Make Essays Shorter or Longer: Best Tips

Undoubtedly the essay’s content is more important than the number of words you use. But there are times when students go more than 10-15% below or over the limit. Is there a solution to this problem?

Yes, there is! In this section, we will share the most useful tips to help you stay on point with your paper’s word count.

How to Make Essays Longer

Since having enough words is essential for a good grade, we’ve collected the best tips that can help you lengthen your essay without teachers noticing:

  • Use relevant quotations.  You don’t need to litter your essay with citations, but using them whenever appropriate is a great idea. For instance, if you’re working on a book analysis, referencing a couple of direct quotes from the source text will make your essay more credible and increase the word count.
  • Give examples.  Go through the claims in your paper and provide additional evidence where possible. It will make your essay longer and more informative.
  • Use transitional expressions.  Adding transition words and phrases is a natural way of increasing the number of words. It will also improve your essay’s readability.
  • Add more references.  Providing references is always a good idea when writing a formal essay. That way, you will increase the number of words and make your paper more credible.
  • Work on your descriptions.  If you struggle to develop new ideas, go over what you’ve already written and consider adding some descriptive words. It’s a great idea for creative essays to include more imagery.

How to Shorten an Essay

Another struggle of academic writing is cutting down the number of words in your essay to meet a set limit. We are here to tell you that it’s not that hard. Writing straightforwardly and keeping your sentences short is a key to concise content. Here are several strategies you may use to tighten a lengthy essay:

  • Choose the active voice.  It takes up less space than passive voice. Using it also makes your writing more professional and compelling.
  • Remove needless transitions.  Transitions can indeed maintain the flow of the paper. But some transitional phrases can be easily removed.
  • Get rid of unnecessary adverbs and adjectives.  Some students tend to overuse adjectives and adverbs. It adds wordiness to their writing.
  • Avoid running starts.  Some students like to start their sentences with long phrases like: “there are,” “it is believed,” or “the fact that.” Getting rid of them makes texts much more concise.
  • Delete “that.”  In most cases, the word “that” can often be easily removed from texts.

Another cool trick is to use our summarizing tool as essay shortener. Try it out!

📑 How Long Is an Essay Depending on Formatting?

As we mentioned earlier, the essay’s length is usually limited by the number of words. But sometimes, a teacher may ask you to write a specific number of pages. This is trickier because the amount of text you can place on the page depends on the formatting. By using the font size and spacing properly, it’s possible to make the paper visually longer or shorter. Let’s discuss it in more detail.

The picture describes how formatting affects essay length.

Essay Spacing: How Does It Affect the Length?

  • Adjusting the spacing between lines.  Try to make the changes as slight as possible. For instance, if you were asked to double-space the paper, use 2.1 or 2.2 spacing instead. Another option is to slightly extend spaces between paragraphs.
  • Extending the margin size.  You can increase the right and bottom margins by a quarter to make very subtle changes in length. For example, if the margins are 1 inch , you can set them at 1.25 inches instead.
  • Increasing the spacing between characters.  It is less noticeable than the line spacing. Still, try not to overdo it and keep the numbers between 1.2 and 1.5 .
  • Adjusting the footer.  Add a footer with page numbers to stretch the bottom margin even further.
  • Lengthening the header.  You can extend your header by adding your name, e-mail address, or other relevant information. Another option is double-spacing it.

Length of an Essay: Font and Size

  • Using the right type of font.  If your instructor didn’t specify which font you should use, go for the bigger ones. We suggest Arial, Bangla Sangam MN, Cambria, or Quicksand. They will make your text look longer without being too on the nose.
  • Using a bigger font size.  This is another technique that can come in handy. However, be careful and don’t increase your font by more than 0.1-0.5 pt.
  • Increasing the size of periods and commas.   This is one of the less noticeable tricks you can use. For instance, if your paper’s font is 12 pt. , increase it to 14 pt. only for punctuation marks. Italicizing periods and commas will also add several lines of length to your essay.

What to Do if There Are No Length Guidelines

Sometimes a teacher sets no word limit for a written work. What to do in that case? Well, first, you can ask your professor to confirm if they have simply forgotten to mention it. But if that’s not the case, here are a couple of helpful solutions:

  • Think of the paragraph number.  Sometimes, you may be given the number of paragraphs instead of words. In that case, you can decide on the number of words depending on how many paragraphs you have.
  • Think about the topic’s complexity.  The length of your paper is also directly dependent on the theme. If the topic is simple, 4-5 paragraphs will be enough. A more complex issue may require an in-depth explanation, so your essay can be 6-8 paragraphs long.

How to Write A 1500 Word Essay: An Ultimate Guide

is a 1500 word essay good

Essays (like 1500 Word Essay) are unavoidable in the academic world. In the academic process, they are extremely important. Assignments are the point of focus in today’s education system. Academic essay assignments are a source of embarrassment for many students. However, essay assignments must not be overlooked. When writing an essay, you must demonstrate your writing and thinking abilities, as well as your knowledge, skills, and experience. One of the most effective ways for professors to assess student performance is through essay or paper writing. As a result, leniency would be tantamount to inviting trouble.

You will be assigned to write various types of essays with varying word counts throughout your college career. I’ll talk about the 1500-word essay in this blog. It’s not as simple as it appears to be to write a 1500-word essay. Keep an eye out for the answer in this blog if you want to know how to write the best 1500-word essay.

A 1500 Word Essay Is How Many Pages?

When single-spaced paging is used, three pages are produced. You’ll end up with 6 pages if you use double-spaced writing (as in MLA or APA style formats).

A 1500-Word Essay Has How Many Paragraphs?

Depending on how you structure your 1500-word essay, it will have 8 to 10 paragraphs. We’ll end up with 8 paragraphs if we take about 5-6 paragraphs for the body parts and add the first and last paragraphs. Even so, it’s a good idea to use as many paragraphs as you think you’ll need.

How Long Should a 1500-Word Essay’s Introduction Be?

The introduction should make up about 10% of the total word count in most cases. Because we’re writing a 1500-word essay, the introduction should be around 150 words long unless otherwise specified.

How Long Should A 1500-Word Essay’s Conclusion Be?

This section accounts for 10% of the overall essay, just like the Introduction. It should be between 150 and 200 words long, with a call to action in the final sentence. Your conclusion should not be overly broad and should be without any new ideas implemented.

How Many References Should You Include in a 1500-Word Essay?

Your subject and methodology will always be factors. Your teacher will usually specify the number of references, but if not, feel free to use as many as you need to make your paper interesting!

Do not, however, overlook the issue of plagiarism! Only one-of-a-kind work is worthy of receiving the highest grade, so don’t cram too many references into your paper. Maintain a healthy balance between your ideas and the evidence that backs up your claim. Additionally, to avoid plagiarism issues, properly cite each source of information.

How Long Does A 1500-Word Essay Take to Write?

If the topic is not too difficult, most students can complete a 1500-word essay in two to three days. Due to their lack of writing skills, students often have little to no time. Some students, however, are still capable of writing 1500 words in a day. If you’ve done some preliminary research and the topic truly inspires you, it might take a few hours. As a result, the answer will always be based on a person’s skills, abilities, grading rubric analysis, and the availability of relevant resources.

A 1500-Word Essay Sample Guide

An essay has three sections, as previously stated. The introduction comes first, followed by the essay’s body, and finally, the conclusion. So, let’s take a look at how to precisely write each part.

Structure of a 1500-Word Essay

Let’s take a closer look at the components of a 1500-word essay. You’ll also find 5 crucial essay structure tips further down on this page. The structure of a 1500-word essay is the same as any other. It has the following components:

• Introduction – this is where you introduce the topic you’re going to discuss. A thesis statement typically concludes an introduction. In the introduction of your 1500-word essay, include some eye-catching information to draw the reader in.

• Main Body – this is where you provide evidence and arguments to back up your thesis statement. To back up your thesis statement, use statistics, quotes, real-life examples, and rational explanations. The body of your paper can be broken down into multiple paragraphs. A 1500-word paper usually has 5–6 paragraphs in the main body.

• Concluding remarks – this is where you summarize your entire project. Your thesis statement should be re-stated, and the arguments should be summed up. The last paragraph must be equally impressive. For this purpose, we recommend using rhetorical questions or emotionally charged language. The conclusion is broken down into three sections:

  • Restatement of the thesis
  • A summary of the essay’s most important points
  • Looks back on the title and forward to the future

While these three sections are critical in conclusion, there are a few other things to think about when writing an essay.

  • There should never be any quotes or new information in your conclusion.
  • Make your conclusion the same way you did your introduction.
  • All of your points should be succinctly summarized in the conclusion.
  • Your essay should provide a sense of completion to the reader, as well as an opportunity for discussion.

Approach to Take While Writing A 1500-Word Essay

Students frequently believe that writing a 1500-word essay requires a different strategy, but this is not the case. The basic essay-writing procedure will not change. Begin with an intriguing introduction before moving on to the main body of the essay. Bring up your arguments with evidence to back them up in the middle section. Finally, write a conclusion for your essay. However, in order to achieve your goal, you must first follow certain rules.

Read Through the Essay Prompts Several Times to Ensure That You Understand Them Completely

This is usually skipped by students. They do not correctly read the essay prompt or question. How will you be able to write a perfect essay if you don’t understand what your professor expects from your essay? As a result, carefully read your essay prompt and seek clarification from your professor if you have any doubt.

Put A Timeline for Your Essay

Setting a deadline for your essay is the second most important thing you can do to keep it from lingering. Set a deadline if you want to finish your essay on time. You will be able to manage your work more efficiently if you create a timeline.

Keep in Mind to Be Knowledgeable About the Subject

You cannot begin an essay bluntly if you are serious about writing it. To begin, familiarize yourself with the subject. First, get some background information on the subject. You’ll need to do some research to accomplish this. Collect data from a variety of books or reputable websites. To gather good quality information for your essay, you can go to various informative websites such as Jstor, Springer, and so on.

Increase Your Typing Speed

You should also pay attention to how fast you type. Because they don’t have a good grip on the keyboard, the majority of students miss deadlines. To finish your essay on time, you must maintain a good typing speed. Within 3 to 4 hours, a 1500-word essay should be completed. You might suffer from your submission if you have more time than that. Slow typers should seek the assistance of online academic assignment writers in order to complete their essays in a timely manner.

Create an Outline

Make an outline of the essay before you begin writing the final draft. Making an outline first will help you structure your essay. Choose a hook statement or proverb for your essay and arrange your ideas chronologically. Make a plan for how you’ll present your arguments. There is a good chance that you will get good grades in the essay if you make an outline first.

Read, Re-read and Edit

Your essay is now complete. A final step ensures that the work is of high quality. Proofreading and editing are the next steps in the process. Consider your essay and read it several times to catch any mistakes. Keep the following in mind when proofreading your work:

  • Check to see if paragraphs are connected and in order.
  • Make sure your opening paragraph is correct. It should consist of the three parts listed above.
  • Examine your essay to see if it adheres to the university’s requirements.
  • Double-checking citations is a must.
  • Keep an eye out for spelling and grammar errors. Students from non-English speaking countries, in particular, should have their grammar checked by professionals.

Avoid Distractions

Last but not least, students should avoid all types of distractions when writing an essay. Only if you are willing to cancel a meeting with a friend or postpone a trip somewhere for a few days in order to focus on your studies will you produce a good essay. Distractions can steal your focus, leaving you pressed for time.

Your 1500-word essay is ready for submission if you followed all of the above-mentioned instructions carefully. Students who are still struggling can seek essay assistance.

Even though your content will differ, you should think about keeping your paragraphs clear. Avoid anything that is not necessary by editing and proofreading your paper. Check twice with your grading rubric and remember to follow every section that has been mentioned.

In most cases, your 1500 word essay structure will always remain the same:

  • Introduction. This is where you present your subject with the main objectives. The final part of the introduction must include a thesis statement. Do not forget to include a hook sentence to impress your audience. Your introduction must represent a certain problem or an argument, depending on what you are writing about.
  • Main Body. Writing your 1500 word essay structure remember the golden rule: one paragraph per idea! Still, it is not always possible when you must combine several ideas. This section is where you must provide evidence and data that supports your thesis statement. For example, statistical data, quotes, real-life examples, personal experience, or anything that would help support your thesis statement with empirical evidence. Since we are dealing with 1,500 words in total, consider making at least five paragraphs.
  • Conclusion. This section sums up your essay. Avoid introducing any new ideas and simply re-state your thesis statement by summarizing your arguments. Do not approach your final paragraph as something insignificant because college professors always read it with even more attention to learn about your writing outcomes. It is recommended to consider rhetorical questions if some additional research must be done.

Remember that your introduction should only provide background information with a thesis statement. Do not give any important information away yet! If there are any counter-arguments, they must be included in a paragraph preceding your conclusion.

How Many References For A 1500 Word Essay?

It will always depend on your subject and methodology. The number of references is usually determined by your teacher, but if it is not – you are free to use as many sources as you need to make your paper interesting!

But don’t forget about plagiarism! Only a unique work is worth scoring the highest grade, and thus, you should not add too many references. Keep the right balance between your ideas and information that supports your thesis. Moreover, cite each source of information properly to avoid issues with plagiarism.

How Long Should an Introduction for a 1500 Essay Be?

In a 1500-word essay, you are expected to present and support a central thesis or argument, provide evidence and analysis, and demonstrate critical thinking and writing skills. The essay should have a clear structure, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The introduction introduces the topic and presents the thesis statement, while the body paragraphs develop key points or arguments with supporting evidence. The conclusion summarizes the main ideas and reinforces the thesis. The word count provides enough space to present a well-developed argument and engage with the topic in a meaningful way.

  • Writing Metier

You know one of those things that take a drastic turn when you are done with schooling and enter university academics’ domains? Referencing your essays is one of these changes. Till the school level, we are to write essays without worrying about referencing. At the university level, things get serious because you must cite the information you are claiming in the article.

Having this said, referencing your essays can turn out to be a real headache. This is one of the many reasons why students opt for essay writing services such as  the Writing Metier . Your concerns regarding how many references you need, how many footnotes you need and many more can be addressed once you hire such services to do your essays.

How many citations is good? How many references is bad? How many references should I have for such a length? Familiar questions? Of course they are, this should be the main reason you are here, reading this article.

In case you are wondering how do you reference multiple sources in a 1500-word essay and why is referencing even important, to begin with, we will be explaining everything to you in this article.

So let’s start with the first very common questions we keep hearing from students.

How many pages in 1500 words?

If you wonder how many paragraphs are 1500 words or how many pages in 1500 words essay, keep in mind that it will be around 4 to 5 pages. This further means that together with  the right amount of transition words , you would need sufficient references in the essay, and we will explain how that works.

Why is it important to reference your essays?

Academic reasons aside, when you reference your essay, it shows the marker that you have engaged in the subject at hand. Additionally, it is also crucial that you show that you have acquired and cited key sources to support the narrative you are sharing in the essay. When referencing your essay, it also shows that you have given a lot of time and attention to the essay through the materials and sources you cite. The more relevant and appropriate references, the better your essay seems.

Then again, it is not about quantity but quality. When it comes to referencing your essays, you need to go for sources that are accurate and suit the subject. With respect to  academic writing  integrity, one needs to acknowledge the writers’ work from who you took the inspiration and information.

Also, do not forget to check the citation style needed for your paper. One of the most popular styles is  APA citation style , the second place goes to  MLA , which is also popular in most universities, and then comes  Oxford , then Turabian,  Harvard , and others. Now, let’s come back to the right number of references.

Is there anything such as too many references?

The short answer: yes. If you are wondering how many references are enough, just be sure that you do not crowd your bibliography section. If you are citing the references in your essay just for the sake of showing off your knowledge or filling texts, it becomes obvious that you are in this for all the wrong reasons. Essays need to have a personal touch as well. If you keep filling them with references, you lose that personal touch.

When choosing sources, keep in mind that they contribute to the angle of the essay. The relevant questions, main points you are posing, the arguments you are contesting or supporting – these need to support them with sources to make the essay case strong.

Your teacher or the marker would like to assess you on your creativity, your thoughts and your own writing process. When you fill the essay with too many references, there is no room for one to share their own thoughts.

Generally, you need to use one to two references for the point you are trying to make. Roughly, for a 1500-word essay, this makes a minimum of 10 references. This, however, also depends on the topic or the subject you are covering in the essay.

To make things easier for you to understand, let’s break down the main contents for your 1500-word essay so you may know how and where to use references:

Introduction

The introduction makes up for 10% of the essay you are writing. In this section, you can use one to two references to set the angle of the essay.

Now, this is where the real game is played. In the body paragraph, you make the real claims and all the arguments, which makes this part 75% of the essay. For instance, in the case of your 1500 word count essay, you need to write at least 850 to 900 words in this heading. For every main point, you need to write at least 2-3 paragraphs. Using primary or quality sources and direct or even secondary references (depending on the nature of the subject), you can support each point with 2-3 references.

Now here comes the remainder 15% of the essay. You may conclude the essay by supporting your finishing lines with 2-3 more references, for the entire paragraph. Just enough references that support the claims you are making.

What are the main type of sources in academic writing?

Citing sources in an academic essay is crucial for acknowledging the work of other scholars, avoiding plagiarism, and allowing readers to verify your information.

According to a general rule, below you will find a rough guide to the main types of different sources that you can cite in an academic essay:

  • Books. These can be scholarly books or textbooks that contain comprehensive information about a particular subject.
  • Journal Articles. Academic or scholarly articles, also known as scholarly journals, that have been peer-reviewed (reviewed by experts in the same field for validity and quality) are often considered the most reliable and credible sources of information.
  • Conference Proceedings. Papers and reports presented at academic conferences can also be cited in your essay. They are useful for accessing the latest research in a field before it gets published in journals.
  • Theses and Dissertations. Graduate students often conduct original research, and their findings can be useful sources for your essay.
  • Government Publications. These can be reports, statistics, laws, or guidelines published by a government department or agency.
  • Newspapers and Magazines. These sources can provide current events, opinions, and sometimes expert commentary.
  • Websites. Reliable websites, especially those affiliated with reputable institutions, government agencies, or respected organizations can be good sources. But, it’s necessary to evaluate their credibility thoroughly.
  • Interviews. Interviews with experts in the field can provide primary data for your research.
  • Reports. This can include annual reports, technical reports, market research reports, etc. They are particularly important in business, engineering, and science disciplines.
  • Data and Statistics. Sources that provide raw data, statistical analysis, survey results, etc., can be very valuable in many fields of study.
  • Patents. In scientific and technical essays, patents can be cited to show developments in a specific field.
  • Case Law and Legislation. In legal essays, cases and statutes are often cited as sources.

Remember that it’s important to use a mix of primary and secondary sources, and to evaluate the reliability and credibility of your sources. Also, you need to follow the citation style (like APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.) that’s prescribed by your professor or academic institution.

How Much to Charge (Or Pay) For a 500 to 1500 Word Article

December 10, 2021 • DJ Team

how much to charge for content writing

One of the hardest things a freelance website content writer will do is to set their pricing. Ask too much, and you risk losing the work to other bidders. Ask too little, and you’ll be locked into a cycle of unprofitable work with that client.

Finding the right freelance writing rate is a delicate balance between the rate you want to earn and the market value of your work. It usually takes new writers a period of trial and error to find the right pricing.

How Much Do Content Writers Make?

Content marketing freelance rates vary depending on project size, time commitment, and whether you are charging by the hour or by the project. Your experience will also impact your content writing services pricing. Having an online portfolio of your work that represents experience for a variety of projects in different industries will make you more valuable to potential clients.

How Much to Charge for a Blog Post

Before you set your pricing, you need to understand your value. Ask yourself:

  • How much experience do I have writing?
  • Do I have expertise in a certain industry or niche?
  • Am I providing any services in addition to writing? Some publishers may ask for SEO keyword research, content marketing strategy, image sourcing, or meta descriptions.
  • What costs do I need to cover? Consider your home office, software, insurance, and self-employment taxes.

Let’s break down how much you could charge per word depending on your experience level and how you can calculate your hourly rate.

Hourly Rate For a Freelance Writer

Some freelance writers charge an hourly rate for their writing services. While this can protect you in the case of a project taking longer than anticipated or excessive edit requests, this model doesn’t allow freelancers to grow earnings as they get more efficient.

Once a freelance writer can estimate their time per project well and become more efficient over time, charging per word or per article is a better option.

Nevertheless, to calculate your hourly rate, follow this formula:

(Goal income + estimated freelance expenses) / billable hours you expect to work

For example, if you want to make $6,000 a month and work 125 billable hours a month with expenses of $250 each month, your hourly rate should be $50.

While you are first starting out, you may not be able to charge your ideal rate to find work and build up your connections and portfolio. Once you have a full schedule of work, however, you can ask for a raise or start to drop your lowest-paying clients in favor of higher-paying ones.

how much to pay a freelance writer for an article

Per word rate

Freelance rates per word are a carryover from the journalism industry, where freelance article rates are determined by the number of words in the published article. How much should a writer charge per word?

Freelance rates can start as low as $0.05 per word for blogs or high-volume content sites, and range up to $1.50 or more per word or more for elite news sites or trade publications.

Calculate your per-word rate with this formula:

per-word rate formula

Be sure to research your target industry to learn what average rates are, and ask for a complete scope of work for each project to avoid surprise expectations.

Flat project rate

To simplify pricing for freelancers and clients, some freelancers use flat project rates. This model determines a flat rate for an article, usually with a predetermined length or scope of work.

What should I charge per article?

cost per blog table

To know what to charge per article, you need to know the length and amount of research required. Below are a few guidelines for how to price your article content writing based on your expertise and industry.

Basic ($0.05-$0.20 per word)

Entry-level professionals or students building a portfolio, non-native English speakers. Clients may be nonprofits or small businesses.

Intermediate ($0.20-$0.70 per word)

Professionals with results to show and experience in the industry. Articles may include some research and interviews. Clients are more likely to be B2B or online publishers.

Expert ($0.70-$1.50+ per word)

EU AI Act: first regulation on artificial intelligence

The use of artificial intelligence in the EU will be regulated by the AI Act, the world’s first comprehensive AI law. Find out how it will protect you.

A man faces a computer generated figure with programming language in the background

As part of its digital strategy , the EU wants to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure better conditions for the development and use of this innovative technology. AI can create many benefits , such as better healthcare; safer and cleaner transport; more efficient manufacturing; and cheaper and more sustainable energy.

In April 2021, the European Commission proposed the first EU regulatory framework for AI. It says that AI systems that can be used in different applications are analysed and classified according to the risk they pose to users. The different risk levels will mean more or less regulation. Once approved, these will be the world’s first rules on AI.

Learn more about what artificial intelligence is and how it is used

What Parliament wants in AI legislation

Parliament’s priority is to make sure that AI systems used in the EU are safe, transparent, traceable, non-discriminatory and environmentally friendly. AI systems should be overseen by people, rather than by automation, to prevent harmful outcomes.

Parliament also wants to establish a technology-neutral, uniform definition for AI that could be applied to future AI systems.

Learn more about Parliament’s work on AI and its vision for AI’s future

AI Act: different rules for different risk levels

The new rules establish obligations for providers and users depending on the level of risk from artificial intelligence. While many AI systems pose minimal risk, they need to be assessed.

Unacceptable risk

Unacceptable risk AI systems are systems considered a threat to people and will be banned. They include:

  • Cognitive behavioural manipulation of people or specific vulnerable groups: for example voice-activated toys that encourage dangerous behaviour in children
  • Social scoring: classifying people based on behaviour, socio-economic status or personal characteristics
  • Biometric identification and categorisation of people
  • Real-time and remote biometric identification systems, such as facial recognition

Some exceptions may be allowed for law enforcement purposes. “Real-time” remote biometric identification systems will be allowed in a limited number of serious cases, while “post” remote biometric identification systems, where identification occurs after a significant delay, will be allowed to prosecute serious crimes and only after court approval.

AI systems that negatively affect safety or fundamental rights will be considered high risk and will be divided into two categories:

1) AI systems that are used in products falling under the EU’s product safety legislation . This includes toys, aviation, cars, medical devices and lifts.

2) AI systems falling into specific areas that will have to be registered in an EU database:

  • Management and operation of critical infrastructure
  • Education and vocational training
  • Employment, worker management and access to self-employment
  • Access to and enjoyment of essential private services and public services and benefits
  • Law enforcement
  • Migration, asylum and border control management
  • Assistance in legal interpretation and application of the law.

All high-risk AI systems will be assessed before being put on the market and also throughout their lifecycle.

General purpose and generative AI

Generative AI, like ChatGPT, would have to comply with transparency requirements:

  • Disclosing that the content was generated by AI
  • Designing the model to prevent it from generating illegal content
  • Publishing summaries of copyrighted data used for training

High-impact general-purpose AI models that might pose systemic risk, such as the more advanced AI model GPT-4, would have to undergo thorough evaluations and any serious incidents would have to be reported to the European Commission.

Limited risk

Limited risk AI systems should comply with minimal transparency requirements that would allow users to make informed decisions. After interacting with the applications, the user can then decide whether they want to continue using it. Users should be made aware when they are interacting with AI. This includes AI systems that generate or manipulate image, audio or video content, for example deepfakes.

On December 9 2023, Parliament reached a provisional agreement with the Council on the AI act . The agreed text will now have to be formally adopted by both Parliament and Council to become EU law. Before all MEPs have their say on the agreement, Parliament’s internal market and civil liberties committees will vote on it.

I’m a Neuroscientist. We’re Thinking About Biden’s Memory and Age in the Wrong Way.

President Biden seated in a chair holding a stack of what looks like index cards.

By Charan Ranganath

Dr. Ranganath is a professor of psychology and neuroscience and the director of the Dynamic Memory Lab at the University of California, Davis, and the author of the forthcoming book “Why We Remember: Unlocking Memory’s Power to Hold On to What Matters.”

The special counsel Robert K. Hur’s report, in which he declined to prosecute President Biden for his handling of classified documents, also included a much-debated assessment of Mr. Biden’s cognitive abilities.

“Mr. Biden would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview with him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

As an expert on memory, I can assure you that everyone forgets. In fact, most of the details of our lives — the people we meet, the things we do and the places we go — will inevitably be reduced to memories that capture only a small fraction of those experiences.

It is normal to be more forgetful as you get older. Generally, memory functions begin to decline in our 30s and continue to fade into old age. However, age in and of itself doesn’t indicate the presence of memory deficits that would affect an individual’s ability to perform in a demanding leadership role. And an apparent memory lapse may or may not be consequential, depending on the reasons it occurred.

There is forgetting, and there is Forgetting. If you’re over the age of 40, you’ve most likely experienced the frustration of trying to grasp that slippery word on the tip of your tongue. Colloquially, this might be described as forgetting, but most memory scientists would call this retrieval failure, meaning that the memory is there but we just can’t pull it up when we need it. On the other hand, Forgetting (with a capital F) is when a memory is seemingly lost or gone altogether. Inattentively conflating the names of the leaders of two countries would fall in the first category, whereas being unable to remember that you had ever met the president of Egypt would fall into the second.

Over the course of typical aging, we see changes in the functioning of the prefrontal cortex, a brain area that plays a starring role in many of our day-to-day memory successes and failures. These changes mean that as we get older, we tend to be more distractible and often struggle to pull up words or names we’re looking for. Remembering events takes longer, and it requires more effort, and we can’t catch errors as quickly as we used to. This translates to a lot more forgetting and a little more Forgetting.

Many of the special counsel’s observations about Mr. Biden’s memory seem to fall in the category of forgetting, meaning that they are more indicative of a problem with finding the right information from memory than Forgetting. Calling up the date that an event occurred, like the last year of Mr. Biden’s vice presidency or the year of his son’s death, is a complex measure of memory. Remembering that an event took place is different from being able to put a date on when it happened, which is more challenging with increased age. The president very likely has many memories, even though he could not immediately pull up dates in the stressful (and more immediately pressing) context of the Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

Other “memory” issues highlighted in the media are not so much cases of forgetting as they are of difficulties in the articulation of facts and knowledge. For instance, in July 2023, Mr. Biden mistakenly stated in a speech that “we have over 100 people dead,” when he should have said, “over one million.” He has struggled with a stutter since childhood, and research suggests that managing a stutter demands prefrontal resources that would normally enable people to find the right word or at least quickly correct errors after the fact.

Americans are understandably concerned about the advanced age of the two top contenders in the coming presidential election (Mr. Biden is 81, and Donald Trump is 77), although some of these concerns are rooted in cultural stereotypes and fears around aging. The fact is that there is a huge degree of variability in cognitive aging. Age is, on average, associated with decreased memory, but studies that follow up the same person over several years have shown that although some older adults show precipitous declines over time, other super-agers remain as sharp as ever.

Mr. Biden is the same age as Harrison Ford, Paul McCartney and Martin Scorsese. He’s also a bit younger than Jane Fonda (86) and a lot younger than the Berkshire Hathaway C.E.O., Warren Buffett (93). All these individuals are considered to be at the top of their professions, and yet I would not be surprised if they are more forgetful and absent-minded than when they were younger. In other words, an individual’s age does not say anything definitive about the person’s cognitive status or where it will head in the near future.

I can’t speak to the cognitive status of any of the presidential candidates, but I can say that, rather than focus on candidates’ ages per se, we should consider whether they have the capabilities to do the job. Public perception of a person’s cognitive state is often determined by superficial factors, such as physical presence, confidence and verbal fluency, but these aren’t necessarily relevant to one’s capacity to make consequential decisions about the fate of this country. Memory is surely relevant, but other characteristics, such as knowledge of the relevant facts and emotion regulation — both of which are relatively preserved and might even improve with age — are likely to be of equal or greater importance.

Ultimately, we are due for a national conversation about what we should expect in terms of the cognitive and emotional health of our leaders.

And that should be informed by science, not politics.
