Rotary Club of Bainbridge has partnered with Bainbridge High School on the contest for 14 years.

“I really appreciate how the program allows the student to reflect on their life experiences and the lessons they learn through these experiences,” said Rotarian Tommie Howell, who serves as contest chair for the club. “We all have a story, and Laws of Life encourages the students to realize that their stories do matter.”

For the 2019-2020 contest, a total of 43,506 students wrote essays, Georgia Laws of Life and 50 participating Rotary clubs throughout the state awarded over $20,000 in cash prizes.

Awards go to 164 school winners and grade winners from 72 high schools. Additional students receive honorable mention recognition.

“Each and every student who wrote their person Law of Life essay is to be commended, their reflections are uplifting, inspiring and a peek inside today’s youth” said Carol Gray, Executive Director of Georgia Laws of Life. This year, due to school closings and Rotary club meeting cancelations Georgia Laws of Life will recognize in social media winning students reading their essays.

Rotary clubs across Georgia conduct the Laws of Life Essay Contest through the nonprofit Georgia Rotary Districts Character Education Program, Inc (GRDCEP).   Rotary Clubs members volunteer to read and judge essays, serve on the contest’s Board of Directors, and volunteer their professional expertise to help build character and ethical literacy among students.

“The essay contest is an opportunity for Rotary clubs to display their motto, ‘service above self’ with local students and schools” Gray commented.

Since 1999, the Georgia Laws of Life Essay Contest has impacted over 750,000 students. Inspired by the power of simple quotes, or Laws of Life, Sir John Templeton established the writing competition in the 1970s to encourage young people to embrace the wisdom of these sayings, which he believed when followed helps everyone live their best lives. In their essays, students use a law to reflect on values that mean the most to them – values such as generosity, courage, perseverance, honesty, integrity, and compassion. Teachers at participating Georgia schools select the best work from among their students to enter into the contest.

The Georgia Laws of Life Essay Contest is made possible through the support of local Rotary Clubs, individual donors, corporations and a grant from the John Templeton Foundation.

AQUINAS College student Sierra Ferguson has been declared the overall winner and top scorer of the senior division of the 2020 Laws of Life essay competition.

The competition is a joint venture between the Templeton World Charity Foundation and the Ministry of Education. The competition is in its 12th year since its resurgence in 2009.

The 2020 competition was launched in December 2019 and concluded in mid-February.

This year, the competition had an overwhelming response from students.

Laws of Life committee member Liesl Wright said, “Following the passing of Hurricane Dorian in early September 2019, the Laws of Life committee made the decision to focus the 2020 competition on laws that espoused empathy, care, understanding and appreciation for what our country had experienced.”

Students were required, as they are each year, to select a law, expound upon its meaning and offer real-life and personal examples of the law in action.

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s awards ceremony was held virtually on Thursday, September 10.

Dr Andrew Serazin, president of the Templeton World Charity Foundation, expressed gratitude to the students for their participation.

“The ‘laws of life’ are what really matters during these challenging times,” he said. “The laws give us the courage to see what is real, to judge fact from fiction, and to see truth no matter where we find ourselves.”

Education Minister Jeff Lloyd congratulated the finalists and commended their efforts while expressing his approval of the original intent of the competition.

“I am particularly pleased with the diversity of topics, all which called for students to interpret, investigate, research and arise at conclusions. . .,” he said.

In total, there were approximately 3,000 entries in primary, junior, senior, college and video divisions. This number has broken all previous records set by the competition, representatives said. The winners in the primary, junior, and senior categories each receive a scholarship prize of $1,000 as well as a $1,000 cash prize for their school.

KADEN MOSS-MOULTRIE PENS OVERALL WINNING LAWS OF LIFE ESSAY

laws of life essay winners 2019

NASSAU, Bahamas, June 26, 2023 — Aquinas College’s Kaiden Moss-Moultrie was the top scorer in the senior division and overall winner of the 15th Laws of Life Essay Competition. She walked away with a $1,000 scholarship and a prize that was matched equally for her school, The Nassau Guardian reported in an article written by Lifestyles Editor Shavaughn Moss,

University of The Bahamas’ Chanae Barr, C.H. Reeves’ Kevin Williams, Temple Christian School’s Dwayne Small, and Tambearly International School’s Terranique Burrows were winners in their respective categories.

They each also received a $1,000 scholarship as well as a prize of equal value for their respective schools. The coveted top awards for all the divisions were presented to 88 students from public and private schools, as well as local tertiary institutions.

Through essays and videos, participants demonstrated their understanding and application of the Laws of Life.

All participants selected one of the suggested Laws of Life for their division, explained its meaning, and offered personal insights, experiences and real-world examples of the law being applied. Some of the laws selected by the students were: “Help yourself by helping others”, “Those who do good do well”, “Success feeds on itself and creates more success”, and “Make yourself necessary to the world and mankind will give you bread”.

With The Bahamas celebrating its 50th anniversary of independence, the topics selected for this year’s competition focused on the words vision, progress, positivity, love, wisdom, learning, and success.

Participants applied their writing and video production skills to convey their ideas on how progress is fueled by diligence and perseverance.

Dr. Andrew Serazin, president of Templeton World Charity Foundation, congratulated the students on their participation in what he called the “super bowl” event of the foundation. He spoke to the purpose of the competition and its impact on students and our community.

“The [Laws of Life] can help us respond to a Facebook post, or a WhatsApp chat, a TikTok or even something like ChatGPT. But here in the real world, more importantly, you can use the Laws of Life to help a friend in need, or make a difficult decision in your life, or plan your own future. This year, the Laws of Life topics for all the individual divisions touched on aspects of how we can improve ourselves, and one common thread was that many essays included moving passages about the Bahamian journey to independence. These essays illustrate the vision of Sir John Templeton and the Templeton World Charity Foundation, not just to get by, but to flourish, as illustrated profoundly in the motto of the country, ‘Forward, Upward, Onward, Together’,” said Serazin at the award ceremony held on Thursday, June 8 at the Baha Mar Convention Center.

A joint venture initiative between Templeton World Charity Foundation and the Ministry of Education and Technical and Vocational Training, the Laws of Life Essay and Video Competition aims to encourage students, through their writing and video production, to reflect upon and articulate how the Laws of Life shape their lives, guide their decisions, and engender personal growth and positive contributions to society.

The 2023 competition was launched in November 2022, closing this year in early May. With approximately 1,700 entries obtained from students in grades five through 12, as well as students enrolled in local tertiary institutions, the markers and judges, officials say, faced the difficult task of selecting the winners from among an array of exceptional entries.

About the Competition

Since 1987, students in communities around the globe have competed for prizes in essay contests based on the Laws of Life in Sir John Templeton’s writings. Starting in 2009, students in The Bahamas have had a contest of their own, presented by The Bahamas Ministry of Education and the Nassau-based Templeton World Charity Foundation.

Students in primary, junior, senior, and college divisions are asked to select one of Sir John Templeton’s laws of life. To compete in the contest, students submit essays explaining how that specific law is meaningful in their own lives. Secondary students also have the option of creating a short video instead of a written essay. Winners receive cash prizes and are recognized in a popular event. In 2019, over 3,000 students submitted entries.

The current incarnation of The Bahamas Laws of Life Essay Competition, which has become the nation’s most successful student essay contest, celebrated its ten-year anniversary in early 2019.

A Successful Public-Private Partnership

In early 2008, the late Dr. John M. Templeton Jr. met with the former Minister of Education, Hon. Carl Bethel to discuss, among other things, his father, Sir John Templeton’s book, Worldwide Laws of Life , and how it could be used by the Ministry of Education. This led to the re-establishment of a successful and beneficial partnership between the Ministry of Education and the Templeton World Charity Foundation, with the annually anticipated Laws of Life Essay Competition now widely accepted as the country’s premier essay competition in public and independent schools across The Bahamas.
