Money is everywhere. We use it to eat, drink, clothe ourselves, and get shelter, among many other uses. Nowadays, it is an undisputed fact that “money makes the world go round.” The earliest known form of money dates back to around 5,000 years ago ; trade was previously carried out using a barter system. However, over the centuries, more and more nations began implementing a currency system, and money has become more critical.

In the contemporary world, it seems to be “all about money.” However, it is important not to lose sight of what is important; we must maintain good physical and mental health and healthy relationships with the people around us. Money is necessary; it is just not the only thing necessary. To start your essay, read these examples to write insightful essays about money.

5 Top Examples On Essay About Money

1. essay on money by prasanna, 2. how money changed human history by jacob wilkins, 3. capitalism: money that make money by ernestine montgomery, 4.  is money the most important thing by seth higgins.

  • 5. An Introduction to Saving Money by Jeremy Vohwinkle

Writing Prompts For Essays About Money

1. good uses for money, 2. the “dark side” of money, 3. money’s role in history, 4. morality vs. money, 5. can money buy happiness, 6. how to save money.

“Imagine the world without money. We will eventually come to a point where we will be asking questions like “what’s the point of life”. Hope and goals are some of the important things that will keep a man going in life. Without any sense of achievement or motivation, there wouldn’t be any inventions or progress in the world. People work to get money and then people work harder to get more money. This cycle of life that keeps a man motivated and hopeful is one of the biggest advantages of the system of money”

This essay gives readers a general outlook on money and its advantages and disadvantages. It gives people equal opportunity to work for their dreams and motivates them to be productive members of society, while it also raises the question of greed. Money, without a doubt, has its positive and negative aspects, but it exists and is only becoming more critical.

“But the barter economy was flawed. There was no universal measure for determining the value of an item. It was all based on the subjective opinion of the individuals involved. And to make matters worse, the barter economy relied on both sides wanting something the other had to offer. Trade, therefore, could be sluggish and frustrating. Human beings needed something different, and money was the answer.”

Wilkins writes about how money revolutionized the way trade was conducted. The barter system involved trading any objects if both parties agreed to a deal, such as trading animal skins for fish or medicine for timber. However, the only measure of an item’s value was how much one party wanted it- both sides needed to have something the other wanted. The introduction of money allowed people to put a solid value on commodities, making trade easier.

“So, if you were to closely observe the dirty, disordered canvas of economic progress during the 20th and 21 st century, you should conclude that, for all its warts, capitalism has been the winner. It has sometimes caused pain; suffered from serious cycles; and often needed the clout of the state- such as we have seen from September 2008. It has also been quite resistant to sensible regulation. Even so, the basic institutions of capitalism have worked, not just in the US and the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and development) nations, but also many developing countries, of which India is one.”

Albeit lengthy, Montgomery’s essay discusses the debate between socialism and capitalism, a topic of which money is at the core. Montgomery describes Karl Marx’s criticism of capitalism: all the money goes to a few people, not the workers. She believes these are valid to an extent and criticizes certain forms of capitalism and socialism. Neither capitalism nor socialism is perfect, but according to Montgomery, capitalism creates a better economy.

“Being the richest man in the world does not mean you are the happiest man in the world, although money can buy you happiness sometimes, but not always. If we could all appreciate the way life is, the fun, and the beauty I think the world would be better. If people weren’t power hungry maybe we’d have a lesser demand for money. Those people who is money hungry and power hungry need to relax. Money can’t buy you happiness. These individuals need to understand that.”

Higgins implores readers to remember that money is not the only thing people need in the world. He stresses the necessity of money, as it is used to pay for various necessary goods and services; however, he believes it is not a prerequisite for happiness. Material things are temporary, and there are other things we should focus on, like family and friends.

5. An Introduction to Saving Money by Jeremy Vohwinkle

“A financial emergency may take the form of a job loss, significant medical or dental expense, unexpected home or auto repairs, a hurricane or major storm, or something unthinkable, such as a global pandemic. The last thing you want to do is to rely on credit cards with their hefty interest fees or to be forced to take out a loan. That’s where your emergency fund can come in handy. Historically, the formula for an emergency account is to have enough readily available cash to cover three to six months of living expenses.“

Vohwinkle’s essay gives readers some suggestions on how to save more money. Most importantly, he suggests setting up an emergency fund, as all other saving techniques stem from there. He also suggests creating an automatic savings plan and cutting down on “spending leaks,” like buying coffee. You might also be interested in these essays about celebration .

In this essay, write about why money is necessary and the ways to use it for the greater good, and include ways in which it can be used (investing, donating, etc.). For each point, you make, be sure to explain why. Of course, this is entirely subjective; feel free to write about what you consider “good uses” for money.

On the other hand, money also has a negative side —research on money-related issues, such as taxpayer-funded corruption and trading of illegal goods. In your essay, explore this side of money and perhaps give solutions on how to stop these problems.

Money has played a progressively more important role throughout human history. Discuss the development of currency and the economy, from the barter system to the digital world we live in today. You need not go too in-depth, as there is a lot of ground to cover and many eras to research. Be sure to cite reputable sources when discussing history.

Many people warn of “selling your soul” for financial gain. In your essay, you can write about the importance of having solid values in this day and age, where money reigns supreme. What principles do you need to keep in mind? Explain how you can still value money while staying grounded; mention the balance between material needs and others.

As stated in Higgins’ essay, more people have begun to prioritize money over all else. Do you believe that money is truly the most important thing? Can it alone make you happy? Discuss both sides of this question and choose your position accordingly. Be sure to provide precise supporting details for a stronger argument.

Stay up to date:, financial and monetary systems.

Everything has its own time. Everything sprouts, grows, withers, and disappears. This is the cycle of life – and the same process also applies to money and the way you obtain it.

Our perception of money – how it is earned and its value – is undergoing a major change.

You open your wallet and see a dime. The coin is physical, you can pick it up and hold it in your hand, and you are confident that it actually has a value of 10 cents. In a few years, you will most likely be holding a small plastic item shaped as a heart or a star, or you might not even have a wallet and only have access to a virtual currency, which you do not know what looks like. You have to be prepared for a financial revolution in the next 10 to 15 years.

Money as we know it has only existed for a relatively few years – the first banknote was printed in France in the 17th Century. More, recently, however, currencies have started to disappear; more than 600 in the last 30 years, and the trend continues.

What has replaced them?

Several leading experts point out that the current monetary system is bound to undergo significant changes in the years to come because it is compromised by issues such as inflation, the illicit economy and counterfeiting, to name a few. At the Shambala Festival , held in England in August, Jem Bendell offered courses on how to create your own currency.

This situation offers up innovative ways to structure an economic system. The current monetary system might actually be a hindrance to people, countries, and governments to work together more optimally than they do today. The monetary system of the future does not depend upon politicians or bankers but will be managed by communities and lending platforms, such as capitalaid.com and lendingclub.com .

Money changes societies, and societies change money. This is how it has always been and will continue to be. When money was “born,” the population of our planet was around 2 million. Today, there are over seven billion of us. The system is under pressure because of an increased demand for money. A massive demand for financing is created because of the current growth, and this growth has created a historical level of economic debt in the world, which in turn causes the increase of inequality.

Money is printed by banks, and “economy” is created when the banks lend money, including loans to governments and countries. However, the “system” simply does not contain enough money to pay off all the debts in the world today.

The monetary system is at the core of the economic system that we know today. Almost all transactions are based on an exchange of money. It is actually in many cases illegal for two parties to trade services (for example, moonlighting). Money is only valuable as long as the value is guaranteed, and as long as we believe that it is valuable and accept it as a payment method and a reward for goods and services. However, nowadays, the trust in money and its value is under pressure. Trust in this system is being eroded. At the forefront of this movement is the world’s young people and the many small entrepreneurs who cannot obtain access to financing.

In the last 10 years, we have seen how relatively easy it is to defraud, cheat, and lose money in the current financial system. The banks print money out of thin air and profit from doing so. Today, we are closer than ever to a financial revolution in which money will disappear and be replaced by something else. Physical banknotes will be substituted by local social currencies, points that you earn by doing social work, services, or companies’ own currencies based on customer loyalty, among others.

Money goes mobile

The use of credit cards has dramatically increased in recent years. VISA and MasterCard have a share of more than 80% of the global credit card market, and this situation can be viewed as a regular oligopoly (feel free to disagree). However, a new and more comprehensive system is rapidly developing: mobile payment solutions. New technologies are providing new ways to make payments and transfer money via mobile phones, apps, Bluetooth solutions, and so on.

We do not yet fully understand the consequences of a society without money. Even today security is merely a footnote in the recommendations of the European Central Bank. Payment networks, such as SWIFT, PayPal, and Western Union, among others, can close people’s accounts in no time if there is a political disagreement with a Russian, Iranian, or just a politically active account holder. You may call it national security; however, you may also call it financial terror.

What will happen when we will experience massive IT breakdowns that are expected to occur in the future? Future wars will not be fought by troops on land but rather by people sitting behind computer screens. Earlier, banks have not shown the capability of taking timely precautions, and IT companies still lack the evidence to prove that they respect privacy and are capable of protecting sensitive data. Thus, we are facing a completely new and challenging ethical and security-related problem with e-money and virtual payment methods.

The young generations have quickly adopted to the new payment methods, and many of them do not know the feeling of holding a real banknote in their hands. In a way, money is becoming “imaginary,” forming a basis for disloyalty, in particular, among Generation Z (15 to 25 years). Based on estimations, the global “mobile pay” market will surpass $500 billion in 2016. In other words, it is a huge market. This market is still based on money, but money spent by using mobile phones. Because people are not holding the money in their hands, loyalty is likely to decline.

Israel and their many currencies

Israel is known for being a trend-setting nation as far as innovation and IT is concerned. There, entrepreneurs are working on the development of the currency of the future because Israel is a good place to test such new initiatives. The American company Robocoin has set up their Bitcoin ATM, which makes it possible for people to exchange their virtual currency to cash. Israel is currently the world’s most active Bitcoin market and the home to hundreds of new start-up companies that focus on the development of technologies related to virtual money.

One of Israel’s leading economists, Galia Benartzi, who is famous for her “heart money,” believes that the global economic system is deeply unfair and unsustainable. She states that believing that money has a value is an illusion. Therefore, she, together with millions of others, is trying to do something about this. In Israel, there are now no less than 87 passable alternative “currencies” that you can use to buy real estate, books, clothes, food, and so on. These currencies are in direct competition with the country’s official currency, the Israeli shekel.

You encounter names such as Isracoin, Heart Money, and Ripplepay, which do not just boast ethical leadership but also regulations, making them passable as global currencies, credit and lending systems, as well as savings methods. O-share is a good example of a social network where money is created and used in a completely new way. This development stems from lack of trust in banks, because the young people feel that they pay too-high interest rates and because the real-estate market and start-up companies, particularly in Tel Aviv, are under pressure because of lack of financing options for the young people.

The young people simply want more fairness in the financial world. We might think that this ideal is a bit naïve, but many thinkers and researchers argue that this trend will lead to the disintegration of our traditional perception of money. The accrual of social capital is based on services (for example, you take the neighbor’s dog for a walk), and if you need money, you are allowed to print them. However, inflation is avoided because the “ownership” of the money is transparent, and the amount of money people have printed is also transparent.

Young people demand transparency

In Denmark, money is handled by the National Bank and the central banking system. The central banks decide who can borrow money and how much interest they have to pay, and through speculation and manipulation of money quantities and interest rates, they control economic upturns (and downturns). This system does not offer sufficient transparency to satisfy what the young people are looking for.

The system in these new social monetary societies works as follows: participants will be contacted by the society if they save too much and thereby block the flow of the currency. The participants then agree to keep the money flowing so that they can work for the society instead of the money ending up passively in their pocket.

These types of currencies exist all over the world. In Kenya, for instance, microentrepreneurs created a new currency called Banglapesa. These new currencies start out as a kind of money used by people in a group who share commonalities and mutual trust and are not limited by their country’s economic politics and mismanagement. These types of currencies have a significant positive influence in developing countries in particular.

The indication is that traditional banknotes, currencies and transactions will one day disappear. It is merely a matter of time, because it is not supported by the younger generations. Currencies and physical money will die out together with their current fan base.

500+ Words Essay on Money

Money is any object or record that is generally accepted as payment for goods and services and repayment of debts which also acts as a standard of deferred payments. The main functions of money are distinguished as: a medium of exchange, a unit of account and a store of value. The money supply of a country consists of currency (banknotes and coins) and bank money. Bank money usually forms the largest part of the money supply.

With the help of money, we can fulfil our dream. We can go on trips to various places, eat tasty food, buy a beautiful house and can buy any luxury items. Many businessmen earn a lot of money by making profits from their businesses. They provide services or make products that people need and make money from them. Now, there are many industries and startups which have set up their business and gained success. But still, there are many people who use illegal modes to earn money and become a part of corruption.

Significance of Money in Economy

Money plays an important role in shaping the economy of any country. Money can stimulate or even hamper economic progress. Money affects the income, output, employment, consumption and economic welfare of the community at large. Money through its purchasing power increases consumption and, as a store of value, increases investment, and employment and leads to economic development.

Demonetisation in India

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, announced demonetisation on 8th November 2016, where Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes were withdrawn from circulation. It was a major event of the year 2016. The demonetisation decision was taken by the Government in consultation with the RBI. The action was taken to tackle Black Money which is available in various forms like cash, investment in property and real estate, luxury goods like jewellery or with foreign currency dealers and private financiers. The target was to curb the use of black money.

The other motto of demonetisation was to reduce corruption. With demonetisation, the cash in the hands of corrupt people becomes useless, and if the same is deposited in the banks, it loses anonymity, and the person has to pay taxes on the said amount.

The demonetisation also helped in promoting digitalisation through online transactions. A large section of the Indian economy was being run on the cash system, which does not get captured by the tax department as it does not leave any trail. So, the Government thought about promoting digitisation and formalisation of the economy through online transactions, e-wallets, and various payment instruments like Paytm, Rupay cards, the BHIM app etc. The beauty of these instruments is that the entire economic activity gets captured. It reduces tax evasion and improves tax collection.

250 Words Essay on Value of Money

The concept of value.

Money, a medium of exchange, has transformed from barter to digital currencies. It holds a value that is universally acknowledged, enabling people to acquire goods and services. However, the value of money isn’t merely its purchasing power. It also represents opportunity, security, and freedom.

Money as a Measure of Worth

Money is often perceived as a measure of worth. The more money one has, the more value they are perceived to hold. This perspective, however, is flawed. Ascribing worth to individuals based on their wealth can lead to a distorted understanding of value, neglecting qualities like kindness, creativity, and resilience.

The Temporal Value of Money

The temporal value of money is a crucial economic concept. It suggests that money available now is worth more than the same amount in the future due to its potential earning capacity. This principle underlies the concepts of interest, investment, and risk.

Money and Freedom

Money can grant freedom, allowing individuals to make choices and decisions without constraints. However, this freedom can also lead to a paradox where the pursuit of money becomes a trap, limiting personal growth and happiness.

In sum, the value of money is a complex concept, extending beyond simple purchasing power. It’s a measure of worth, a temporal asset, and a tool for freedom. As we navigate our financial journeys, understanding these various dimensions can help us use money as a tool for fulfillment, rather than viewing it as the ultimate goal.

500 Words Essay on Value of Money

Introduction: the concept of money.

Money, a medium of exchange, is a fundamental concept in our society. It is a tool that allows us to acquire goods and services, and it is a measure of value that facilitates trade and commerce. However, the value of money is not just limited to its purchasing power. It has a broader, more profound significance that extends to individual lives, society, and the global economy.

The Personal Value of Money

On a personal level, the value of money is often equated with freedom and security. It provides the means to fulfill basic needs and pursue personal aspirations. It also offers a safety net against unforeseen circumstances. However, it’s important to understand that money is a tool, not an end in itself. The value of money lies in its use and the quality of life it can provide, rather than the accumulation of wealth for its own sake.

The Social and Economic Value of Money

Societally and economically, money serves as a common measure of value, facilitating trade and economic interactions. It is the lifeblood of the economy, enabling the flow of goods and services. Money also confers social status and power, often serving as a yardstick for success. However, this can lead to societal disparities and economic inequality, highlighting the importance of fair wealth distribution.

The Psychological Value of Money

Psychologically, money can impact our behaviors, decisions, and emotions. Studies have shown that our relationship with money can affect our mental health, stress levels, and overall happiness. The psychological value of money is subjective and varies from person to person. Some may find value in the security money provides, while others may value the opportunities it affords for experiences and personal growth.

The time value of money (TVM) is a fundamental concept in finance. It holds that a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow due to its potential earning capacity. This principle underlies many financial decisions and strategies, emphasizing the importance of prudent management and investment of money.

Conclusion: The Multifaceted Value of Money

In conclusion, the value of money is multifaceted and extends beyond its purchasing power. It holds personal, societal, economic, psychological, and temporal value. Understanding these aspects can help us navigate our financial decisions and foster a healthier relationship with money. However, it’s crucial to remember that while money is a powerful tool, it is not the sole determinant of success or happiness. It is the means to an end, not the end itself.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

A great deal of importance has been attached to money in the production, consumption, exchange, distribution, public finance, etc. As a result, it plays an important role in determining raw material input, income, employment, output, and general price levels of anything, etc.

Essay on Money is Everything

Essay on Money is the Root of all Evils:

Money has been a part of human society since its inception. It has evolved from being used as a medium of exchange to becoming a symbol of power and success. People have always desired to accumulate wealth, and in today’s materialistic world, money has become the ultimate goal for many.

However, with this desire for wealth, comes numerous negative consequences that are often overlooked. In this essay, we will discuss how money can be considered as the root of all evils.

The Obsession with Money

In the pursuit of materialistic possessions, people often become obsessed with money. Money becomes their sole purpose in life, and they are willing to do whatever it takes to acquire it. This obsession can lead individuals down a path of greed, where they only care about their own financial gain without considering the consequences of their actions. As a result, many unethical and immoral activities such as fraud, theft, and corruption occur due to this unhealthy obsession with money.

Creates Disparity and Inequality

Another major issue caused by the love for money is the creation of disparity and inequality within society. People with more wealth tend to have better access to education, healthcare, and opportunities that can lead to a better quality of life. This creates an uneven playing field where those who are already financially stable have an advantage over others.

As a result, poverty rates increase, leading to social unrest and crime in society. Moreover, the gap between the rich and poor continues to widen as the wealthy become wealthier while the poor struggle to make ends meet.

Causes Conflict and Strife

Money can also be considered as the root of many conflicts and strife within society. As people become more obsessed with money, they are willing to go to extreme lengths to protect their wealth. This can lead to disputes and disagreements among individuals, communities, and even nations. Wars have been fought over resources and power, which ultimately stems from the desire for money.

On a smaller scale, family relationships can also be affected when one member becomes financially successful while others struggle. This creates tension and resentment within the family unit, leading to conflict and strain in relationships.

It Leads to Materialism and Consumerism

The pursuit of money also leads to a culture of materialism and consumerism. People often equate their self-worth and happiness with the possessions they own. This constant need for more, bigger, and better things can lead to excessive spending, debt, and financial strain.

Furthermore, the never-ending cycle of consumption has negative consequences on the environment as resources are depleted at an alarming rate. This consumeristic mindset also perpetuates a throwaway culture where items are discarded instead of being repaired or reused, leading to environmental pollution and waste.

In conclusion, while money may be necessary for survival and provides a sense of security, it can also be considered as the root of all evils in society. The unhealthy obsession with money leads to numerous negative consequences such as greed, inequality, conflict, and environmental degradation. It is essential to recognize the dangers of this love for wealth and strive towards a more balanced and equitable distribution of resources in society.

As the saying goes, “money cannot buy happiness,” and it is crucial to prioritize values such as compassion, empathy, and kindness over material possessions. So let us not forget that money is just a means to an end and not an end in itself. The true wealth lies in human relationships and making a positive impact on society, not in the accumulation of material possessions.

Essay on Money Laundering:

Money laundering is a term used to describe the illegal process of concealing the true origins of money obtained through criminal activities. It involves disguising illegally obtained funds as legitimate income in order to avoid detection by law enforcement and financial institutions.

Money laundering has become a global problem, with an estimated $800 billion to $2 trillion laundered annually. In this essay, we will discuss the concept of money laundering, its impact on society, and some measures to combat it.

Origin of Money Laundering

The term money laundering originated from the Italian word “lavare,” which means to wash. It was first used in the 1920s by American gangsters who were involved in bootlegging liquor during Prohibition. These criminals created elaborate schemes to disguise their illegal profits as legitimate businesses or investments.

This facilitated the integration of illicit funds into the legal economy and made it difficult for law enforcement officials to trace the source of these funds. Since then, money laundering has evolved into a sophisticated global crime that involves the movement of huge sums of money across borders and through multiple financial institutions.

Impact on Society

Money laundering has far-reaching consequences for society. It undermines the integrity and stability of financial systems, distorts competition, and facilitates corruption. By allowing criminals to profit from their illegal activities, it perpetuates criminal behavior and poses a threat to national security.

It also has negative impacts on legitimate businesses as they may face unfair competition from those using laundered funds.

Furthermore, money laundering enables criminal organizations to sustain their operations by providing them with access to clean funds for financing terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and other illicit activities. Ultimately, this has a detrimental effect on the overall economy and society.

Measures to Combat Money Laundering

To combat money laundering, countries have implemented various laws and regulations. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is an intergovernmental organization that sets international standards for combating money laundering and terrorist financing.

It conducts regular evaluations of member countries’ efforts in implementing these standards and provides recommendations for improvement. Financial institutions are also required to implement strict know-your-customer (KYC) procedures to identify their customers and verify the source of funds.

Additionally, governments should increase collaboration with law enforcement agencies, financial intelligence units, and other regulatory bodies to share information and intelligence on suspicious activities. This will help in detecting and preventing money laundering activities more effectively.

In conclusion, money laundering is a serious global issue that has significant impacts on society. It is not only a financial crime but also a threat to national security and the integrity of our financial systems. To combat it successfully, there needs to be cooperation between governments, law enforcement agencies, and financial institutions.

Strict laws and regulations must be implemented and enforced, along with proper monitoring mechanisms. Only by working together can we effectively tackle this complex and ever-evolving problem of money laundering. The Money Plant, also known as Devil’s Ivy or Golden Pothos, is a popular houseplant that is loved for its beautiful foliage and easy maintenance. It belongs to the family of Araceae and is native to the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. This plant has been used in traditional medicine for centuries and is believed to bring good luck and prosperity.

The Money Plant is an evergreen vine with heart-shaped leaves that can grow up to 40 feet in length. Its leaves are glossy and have a marbled pattern in shades of green and yellow. The plant also produces small, white flowers, but they are insignificant compared to its lush foliage. It is often grown as a hanging plant or trained on a trellis for support.

One of the reasons why the Money Plant is so popular is because it can easily adapt to different environments and grow in low light conditions. It also has air-purifying properties, making it a great choice for indoor spaces. The plant is known to remove toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, and xylene from the air, improving the overall air quality in your home or office.

Taking care of a Money Plant is relatively easy. It requires well-draining soil and moderate watering, making it suitable for people who don’t have a green thumb. The plant can also be propagated easily by stem cuttings, making it an ideal choice for beginner gardeners.

Apart from its aesthetic and health benefits, the Money Plant is also believed to bring financial prosperity. According to Feng Shui, placing a Money Plant in the southeast or east direction of your home can attract wealth and abundance. However, it is essential not to rely solely on the plant for good luck and instead work hard towards your goals.

In conclusion, the Money Plant is not only a beautiful and low-maintenance houseplant but also has cultural and metaphysical significance. Whether you believe in its luck-bringing properties or not, this plant is undoubtedly a great addition to any home or office space.

Essay on Money is not Everything:

Money is a powerful tool that can provide us with comfort, security and luxury. It is often seen as the ultimate goal in life, and people spend most of their time chasing it. However, money is not everything in life. It cannot buy happiness, love or good health. In fact, it can sometimes lead to more problems and conflicts in relationships.

Money can surely buy materialistic things that give us temporary pleasure, but true happiness comes from within. It is not something that can be bought with money. Many people have all the luxuries in the world but are still unhappy and unfulfilled.

This is because they lack strong relationships, a sense of purpose and inner peace. It is important to understand that money can only provide temporary satisfaction, but true happiness lies in the simple things in life like spending time with loved ones, helping others and pursuing our passions.

Moreover, love and relationships cannot be bought with money. True love and genuine relationships are built on trust, respect and mutual understanding.

These cannot be bought with money; they must be earned through sincere efforts. In fact, having too much money can sometimes create power imbalances in relationships, leading to conflicts and even breakups. Therefore, it is important not to let money become the priority in a relationship. Instead, we should focus on building strong and meaningful connections with our loved ones.

Additionally, money cannot buy good health. It may be able to provide access to healthcare facilities and treatments, but it cannot guarantee a healthy mind and body. In fact, people who prioritize money over their health often neglect self-care and face various health issues in the long run. Therefore, it is important to maintain a balance between work and personal life and prioritize self-care. After all, without good health, money becomes meaningless.

In conclusion, money is certainly important in life, but it should not be the sole focus. True happiness and fulfillment come from within and cannot be bought with money. We should prioritize building meaningful relationships, pursuing our passions and taking care of our health over constantly chasing after more wealth. As the saying goes, “money can’t buy everything,” and we must remember that in order to live a truly fulfilling life.

Argumentative Essay on Money:

The topic of money and its role in our lives is a highly debated one. Some argue that money is the root of all evil, while others view it as a means to achieve success and happiness. The truth lies somewhere in between. Money is a necessary aspect of our lives, but it should not be the sole focus or measure of our success.

On one hand, money can provide us with material comforts and opportunities. It allows us to have a decent standard of living, access to education and healthcare, and the ability to pursue our passions. Without money, we would struggle to meet our basic needs and live a fulfilling life. In this sense, money can bring us happiness and satisfaction.

However, the pursuit of money can also have negative consequences. It can consume our lives and lead to greed, materialism, and a constant desire for more. Many people become trapped in a cycle of work and earning just to keep up with societal expectations or to maintain their status.

This relentless pursuit of wealth can lead to neglecting other important aspects of life such as relationships, personal growth, and mental well-being. In this sense, money can become a source of stress and unhappiness.

Moreover, the unequal distribution of wealth in society adds to the complexity of the issue. While some individuals have an abundance of money and resources, others struggle to make ends meet.

This creates a divide between the haves and have-nots, leading to feelings of resentment and inequality. Money can also be used as a tool for power and control, further fueling societal issues such as corruption and exploitation.

In conclusion, money is an important aspect of our lives, but it should not be the sole determinant of our success or happiness. We must strike a balance and prioritize what truly matters to us beyond material possessions. It is crucial to find a healthy relationship with money and use it wisely for our well-being and that of others. Ultimately, true success lies in achieving a fulfilling life rather than accumulating wealth.

Write a high school Essay on Money:

Money is a crucial topic for high school students, especially as they approach adulthood. It plays a significant role in shaping their future and achieving their goals. Money management skills are essential for students to learn at an early age. It helps them understand the value of money, how to earn it, save it and spend it wisely. In this essay, we will discuss the importance of money for high school students and how they can learn to manage it effectively.

Firstly, understanding the value of money is crucial for high school students. Most teenagers have a limited understanding of where money comes from and how hard their parents work to earn it. It’s essential to teach them about earning an income, whether through part-time jobs or chores at home.

This not only helps them appreciate the value of money but also instills a strong work ethic in them. It also teaches them to be responsible for their own finances and not rely solely on their parents.

Secondly, high school students need to learn how to save money. Many teenagers have the tendency to spend impulsively, especially with peer pressure and societal influences. It’s important to teach them the concept of budgeting and saving for future goals such as college or a car.

This will help them develop financial discipline and avoid getting into debt later in life. They can also start small by setting aside a portion of their allowance or earnings each month. This will teach them the value of delayed gratification and long-term planning.

Lastly, high school students should learn how to spend money wisely. With access to credit cards and online shopping, it’s easy for teenagers to overspend and fall into debt. Educating them on the importance of budgeting and differentiating between needs and wants is crucial in making informed financial decisions.

They can also be taught about investment options such as mutual funds or stocks, which can help their money grow over time. This will give them a head start in building their financial future.

In conclusion, money is an important aspect of a high school student’s life and learning how to manage it effectively is crucial for their future success. By teaching them the value of money, saving skills, and wise spending habits at an early age, we can help them become financially responsible adults. It’s never too early to start teaching teenagers about money management as it sets them up for a stable and secure financial future.

Advantages of Money Essay:

Money is something that has been a part of human society for centuries, and it plays a crucial role in our daily lives. In simple terms, money is any object or record that is generally accepted as payment for goods and services and repayment of debts. It can come in various forms such as paper notes, coins, or even digital transactions. In this short essay, we will discuss the advantages of money and why it is such an essential aspect of our society.

First and foremost, money provides a means for people to exchange goods and services. In earlier times, barter system was used for trade where people exchanged goods or services directly with one another.

However, this system had its limitations as it required a double coincidence of wants. With the introduction of money, individuals could now sell their products or services for money and then use that money to purchase other goods or services they needed.

This made trading much more efficient and convenient. Moreover, money also serves as a unit of account, making it easier for people to compare the value of different goods or services.

Money also allows individuals to save and accumulate wealth. With the use of money, people can store their excess income and use it later for future needs such as emergencies or retirement. This provides a sense of security and stability in one’s life.

Additionally, with the help of financial institutions like banks, individuals can invest their money in various sources to earn interest over time and increase their wealth. This creates opportunities for people to improve their financial status and achieve their goals.

Furthermore, money also enables governments to operate and provide essential services to its citizens. Taxes collected from individuals and businesses make up a significant portion of a government’s revenue, which is used for various purposes such as building infrastructure, providing education and healthcare facilities, and maintaining law and order. Without money, it would be challenging for governments to function effectively, leading to a breakdown of society.

In conclusion, money has numerous benefits in our society. It facilitates trade and exchange, allows people to save and invest, and enables governments to operate efficiently for the betterment of its citizens. However, it is crucial to use money responsibly and ensure that it does not become the sole focus of our lives

Essay on Save Money is a Good Habit:

Saving money is an important habit that everyone should develop. It refers to the process of setting aside a portion of your income for future use, rather than spending it all at once. This practice not only helps in meeting unforeseen expenses but also ensures financial stability and security. In this essay, we will discuss why saving money is a good habit and how it can benefit individuals in the long run.

One of the primary reasons for saving money is to prepare for unexpected events. Emergencies such as medical emergencies, job loss, or natural disasters can occur at any time, and having saved money can help in dealing with them without causing financial strain.

Additionally, saving money also helps in achieving financial goals and fulfilling dreams such as buying a house or going on a dream vacation. It provides a sense of security and peace of mind, knowing that there is a safety net in times of need.

Moreover, saving money can also lead to financial stability. By building a habit of saving regularly, individuals can create a cushion for themselves during tough economic times. This habit can help in avoiding debts and living within one’s means. Furthermore, it can also provide the freedom to take career risks or pursue new opportunities without worrying about financial consequences.

In the long run, saving money can also bring financial freedom and independence. By consistently saving a portion of their income, individuals can build a nest egg that can generate passive income in the future. This provides stability during retirement or even allows for early retirement. Additionally, it can also help in achieving long-term financial goals such as starting a business or investing in assets.

In conclusion, saving money is a good habit that can bring numerous benefits to individuals. It not only helps in preparing for unexpected events but also leads to financial stability and independence. Therefore, it is essential to develop this habit from an early age and make it a part of our daily lives.

As the saying goes, “a penny saved is a penny earned,” and by following this principle, we can secure a better future for ourselves and our loved ones. So let us all start saving today! # Keep Saving! Start Saving now!

Essay on Money and Credit:

Money and credit are two fundamental concepts that play a crucial role in our daily lives. Money is a medium of exchange that enables us to buy goods and services, while credit allows us to access funds without having to pay the full amount upfront. In this essay, we will discuss the relationship between money and credit and their importance in our economy.

Money is a universal currency that facilitates trade and commerce. It comes in various forms such as coins, paper notes, and digital currency. Without money, the barter system would still be prevalent where goods were exchanged directly for other goods.

However, this system was inefficient as it required a coincidence of wants between two parties. Money eliminates this problem by providing a common medium of exchange accepted by everyone.

On the other hand, credit is an essential aspect of modern economies as it allows individuals and businesses to access funds for various purposes. It can be in the form of loans, mortgages, or credit cards. Credit enables people to invest in their future by purchasing a house or starting a business without having to save up all the money beforehand. It also provides short-term financing options for emergency situations or unexpected expenses.

Money and credit are closely intertwined as the availability of credit depends on the amount of money in circulation. When there is more money available, interest rates tend to be lower, making it easier for individuals and businesses to access credit. Similarly, a lack of confidence in the economy or a shortage of money can lead to higher interest rates, making it more challenging to get credit.

In conclusion, money and credit are crucial components of our economy. They enable transactions to take place smoothly and provide opportunities for individuals and businesses to invest in their future. It is essential to understand the relationship between money and credit to make informed financial decisions that can benefit us in the long run.

Money is undoubtedly an important part of life. But it is not the only thing. As these essays explain with clear facts and examples, meaning, importance or power of money in life. These essays are written in simple English for high school and college level students to assist them in their exams.

a person riding on the back of a boat in a body of water

What is a CraigCat?

The CraigCat is an exceptionally unique watercraft that has been giving people nothing but smiles for over 30 years! This two-seat catamaran with 30 Horsepower outboard engine driven speed boat allows our guests to go up to speeds nearing 30 mph! The boat allows for a much more intimate ride than similar small watercraft such as wave runners or jet skis. This allows our guests to sit in a relaxed, comfortable position and stretch out during their CraigCat ride around Marco Island. Conversation is much easier between driver and rider on the CraigCat thanks to the design of the seats being side by side rather than forward and behind.

The CraigCat is also known for being very stable and very safe as well as easy to operate. After a short 15 minute instructional and safety speech, you will have all the know how needed to operate the vessel and enjoy the adventure.

The CraigCat offers a space for a complimentary cooler provided by us filled with bottled water and ice already. The CraigCat also has a small dry box built on the boat to place your belongings safe from any splashes. We’ll make sure you have the best Backwater Adventure around Marco Island!

Reviews of Our Tours in The 10,000 Islands!

We saw several dolphins, some of which came right up to our boat! Our tour guide was the owner and was very knowledgeable. I would recommend this to any of my family or friends who visit Florida!

This is the best tour I've ever been on and I live right on the water. The guide really knows how to make these trips awesome not to mention the quality of the water crafts your driving and in complete control of make it a smooth ride. If your into pictures of national geographic scenery of the 10,000 islands then this is the trip for you. Highly recommended. I go at least once a month!!!!! It never gets old.

We were able to see 2 dolphin pods: 1 was leery of humans since it had a baby dolphin, the other pod was quite playful and hung around our boats for a great experience. It was also fun to cruise around the small islands in our 2-person CAT boats. This was the best part of our Marco Island vacation!

Tyler, our guide is a super cool dude and it was fun to follow his lead. We got to see dolphins up close and personal. These little 30hp Craig-Cats move pretty fast and are very fun to drive. Would totally go again and again, Tyler made our experience that much better. Good times!

We had a great time, Conner was a great tour guide had fun along the way and I would highly recommend this adventure.

The owner and our tour guide was great. We saw dolphins up close on our trip. He let us know a lot of info of the area and surrounding. The craigcats are so easy to operate that anyone can operate them. The boats were awesome, so awesome that when I got got back home I called craigcat and bought one. would recommend this company to anyone. Its definitely a great time

We had a great time! It’s not only fun, the owner to our guide, Jason were so professional and thoughtful of our needs. All of us loved it and cannot wait to return!

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. The girl on the picture-light blue bag-ask for 100 Rubles for show her the QR Code while I had the Booking and PIN number cause she must see the vessel name-Didn’t say nothing and after she said board any vessel. I suggest take the trip and pay on site, avoid fake internet pages, there are many other services with a lot of entertainment, don’t take this ones. Read more Written July 14, 2018
  • Kathrynowl91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good way to see some sites We usually do these tours when we travel. They get you round and you see the sight . The traffic is quite heavy so it is a bit slow but there is not a lot they can do about it. We only did the red route. Just a note people don’t queue here when the bus comes it’s a bit of a free for all. Read more Written July 13, 2018
  • Daniyal91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Was Ok.! Started our tour of moscow from here, We had got the 2 Day Pass with the boat ride. The route and the map was good but not well managed. The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! The boat ride was Ok, a little crowded. No guide provided, just a boat ride with restaurant service Read more Written July 12, 2018
  • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018

3 smart money moves to make in your 20s to be more successful

thumbnail

Your 20s can be a strange decade, encompassing everything from college graduation and moving out of your parents' house to your entry into the workforce and bringing in what's likely the most money you've made in your life so far.

But figuring out exactly what to do with your paychecks can be stressful for Gen Z and young millennials.

While it's great to live in the moment — and soak up your newfound of independence — your 20s are also a great time to put into place long-term financial habits.

If you're questioning how to put your money to use in your 20s, here are three smart money moves to set yourself up for success later in life, according to two certified financial planners.

1. Start planning for retirement now

With the average American retiring in their early 60s , it can seem odd to begin stashing away cash for a phase of your life that's almost four decades away.

But time is on your side, and your 20s are "the most important age" to start saving for retirement, says Andrew Fincher, a financial advisor at VLP Financial Advisors and certified financial planner.

"It's less about the amount you're putting in [retirement savings] and more about how much time you're invested," he says. "The compounding interest over a 40- or 50-year period is huge. If you do a smaller amount over 50 years, you'll end up with a larger balance than if you didn't start until you're 35 and you max out."

You can begin by seeing if your company sponsors a tax-advantaged retirement savings account, such as a 401(k) . If it does, see if it also offers a company match, which is when an employer matches some or all of the contributions you make.

"There's no other investment that I know of where you immediately get 100% on your money day one, or whatever the match is," says Joe Conroy, certified financial planner and author of "Decades & Decisions: Financial Planning At Any Age."

2. Focus on debt elimination

While it can be tempting to spend your money on travel or dinners with friends, be mindful of tackling debt now to prevent it from compounding later.

The most common forms of debt for twentysomethings include credit cards, auto loans, student loans and personal loans. High interest rates have made paying off debt even harder, and in 2023 people under 29 carried an average of nearly $3,000 in credit card debt.

"More people are carrying more debt, and those balances cost more than ever," Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate.com, told CNBC Make It in 2023 .

To tackle credit card debt, Rossman recommends either signing up for a  0% balance transfer card or consolidating your credit card debt if you have several balances on different cards.

Student loans are another common burden for many young people, with nearly 35% of adults ages 18 to 29 carrying student loan debt, according to the Education Data Initiative .

While it can be burdensome for twentysomethings to make anything more than the minimum payment on their student loans given that many are living off an entry-level salary, Fincher encourages people in their 20s to focus as much as possible on eliminating this debt.

"The problem is to look out further, when the interest on [student loans] has just accrued like crazy when you hit your 30s and really puts you in a more difficult position to be in," he says. "To the extent that you have the ability to pay down a little bit more, focusing on that is a huge thing as well."

3. Incorporate weddings into your budget

As you enter your mid- to late-20s, it's likely that more and more wedding invitations will crowd your mailbox.

Attending the wedding of a friend creates lifelong memories, but can also set you back several hundred dollars if you need a new dress or suit or have to pay for travel expenses. That number often multiplies if you're in the wedding party.

Preparing in advance for wedding attendance expenses can be helpful to avoid going into debt over pricey events, says Conroy. He recommends creating a wedding budget that you deposit a certain amount into each month, depending on how many events you have coming up.

"That way, you're not just living off credit cards, you've actually set the money aside," he says.

The same strategy could be applied to a vacation you've always wanted to take or a big birthday dinner. Creating a "me fund" can allow you to fit fun expenses into your lifestyle without stressing over the consequences.

Include an introduction and conclusion

A conclusion is essential for IELTS writing task 2. It is more important than most people realise. You will be penalised for missing a conclusion in your IELTS essay.

The easiest paragraph to write in an essay is the conclusion paragraph. This is because the paragraph mostly contains information that has already been presented in the essay – it is just the repetition of some information written in the introduction paragraph and supporting paragraphs.

The conclusion paragraph only has 3 sentences:

  • Restatement of thesis
  • Prediction or recommendation

To summarize, a robotic teacher does not have the necessary disciple to properly give instructions to students and actually works to retard the ability of a student to comprehend new lessons. Therefore, it is clear that the idea of running a classroom completely by a machine cannot be supported. After thorough analysis on this subject, it is predicted that the adverse effects of the debate over technology-driven teaching will always be greater than the positive effects, and because of this, classroom teachers will never be substituted for technology.

Start your conclusion with a linking phrase. Here are some examples:

  • In conclusion
  • To conclude
  • To summarize
  • In a nutshell

Savings accounts are a solid place to stash your cash for an emergency fund or other short-term savings goals. If you’re letting your money sit in a traditional savings or checking account that earns less than 1% annual percentage yield (APY), you’re missing out on interest.

1212930428.jpg

Right now, the best high-yield savings accounts earn up to 5.35% APY, more than 10 times the national savings account average of 0.47%. For interest-bearing checking accounts, that average is even lower, at 0.07%.

Over the last two years, we’ve been able to maximize our interest earnings with savings accounts that earn high APYs. But the clock is ticking. The Fed forecasts three interest rate cuts in 2024, which could bring variable savings rates down.

Read on to learn more about today’s top savings rates.

Key takeaways

  • Today’s top high-yield savings accounts earn up to 5.35% APY.
  • The Federal Reserve held rates steady at its latest policy meeting, so savings rates should remain high for the time being.
  • Opening a high-yield savings account now allows you to get greater returns than you would with a traditional account.

Experts recommend comparing rates before opening a savings account to get the best APY possible. You can enter your information below to see CNET’s partners’ rates in your area.

Today’s best savings rates

Here are some of the top savings account APYs available right now:

What interest rate policy means for savings rates

High interest rates have caught everyone’s attention over the last couple of years. As the Fed steadily raised the federal funds rate 11 times to fight record inflation, borrowing money with a credit card or loan became more expensive. But banks also raised interest rates on consumer products like savings accounts and certificates of deposits.

The Fed opted to leave the federal funds rate unchanged at its last several meetings, maintaining its target range of 5.25% to 5.5%. That means savings rates are likely at their peak.

Here’s where rates stand compared to last week:

Experts expect rate cuts to begin later this year. But after the most recent Consumer Price Index report revealed an uptick in inflation, the timeline for future rate cuts is less clear.

Since savings rates are variable, your APY is likely to go down once the Fed drops rates. Yet even after rates fall later this year, high-yield savings accounts will continue to offer significantly better APYs than traditional ones.

Savings rates have been high for the last few years. And even though the rate environment may shift in the next several months, a high-yield savings account can always be a smart and low-risk savings strategy.

Here’s what makes HYSAs stand out:

  • High rates: HYSAs often have APYs 10 times higher (or more) than the national FDIC average.
  • Low or no fees: Monthly maintenance fees can eat into your savings. Many online banks can charge low or no fees thanks to their lower operating costs.
  • Liquidity: You can access money in your HYSA anytime without penalty (as long as you mind any withdrawal limits). CDs, another popular savings product, charge a penalty if you take out funds before the term is up.
  • Accessibility: If you open an HYSA at an online bank, you’ll enjoy 24/7 account access through its mobile app. You may also have lots of customer service options, including by phone, online chat and secure messaging.
  • Low risk: HYSAs are protected by federal deposit insurance if they’re held at an FDIC-insured bank or NCUA-insured credit union. That means your money is safe up to $250,000 per account holder, per account type.

If you’re earning less than 1% with your current savings account -- some big banks offer as little as 0.01% APY -- you don’t have to close your existing account to enjoy higher rates. You can open a new account from an online bank in minutes and set up recurring transfers or direct deposits to start funding it.

What to consider before choosing a high-yield savings account

High-yield savings accounts usually have higher APYs than traditional savings accounts, which help you yield a bigger return. But there are other factors you should consider when choosing the right account for your financial goals.

“Some accounts have mandatory minimums, transaction fees or other charges you might not expect,” said Ben McLaughlin , chief marketing officer and president of digital savings marketplace Raisin. “These hidden fees can chip away at your savings, so be sure you are satisfied with the terms and conditions before opening an account.”

In addition to APY, you should weigh the following when comparing savings accounts:

  • Minimum deposit requirements: Some HYSAs require a minimum amount to open an account -- typically, from $25 to $100. Others don’t require anything. How much you have to deposit initially can help you narrow down your options.
  • Fees: Monthly maintenance and other fees can eat into your balance. Avoid unnecessary charges by looking for a bank with low or no fees.
  • Accessibility: If in-person banking is important to you, look for a bank with physical branches. If you’re comfortable managing your money digitally, look for an online bank with a user-friendly app with all the features you need.
  • Withdrawal limits: Some banks charge an excess withdrawal fee if you make more than six monthly withdrawals. If you think you may need to make more, consider a bank without this limit.
  • Federal deposit insurance: Look for a bank that belongs to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or a credit union that belongs to the National Credit Union Administration. Accounts at these institutions are protected up to $250,000 per account holder, per category in the event of bank failure
  • Customer service: You want a bank that’s responsive and offers convenient support options if you ever need assistance with your account. Read online customer reviews to see what current customers say about their experiences. You can also contact customer service to get a feel for what it would be like to work with the bank.

CNET reviewed savings accounts at more than 50 traditional and online banks, credit unions and financial institutions with nationwide services. Each account received a score between one (lowest) and five (highest). The savings accounts listed here are all insured up to $250,000 per person, per account category, per institution, by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or National Credit Union Administration.

CNET evaluates the best savings accounts with a set of established criteria that compares annual percentage yields, monthly fees, minimum deposits or balances and access to physical branches. None of the banks on our list charge monthly maintenance fees. An account will rank higher for offering any of the following perks:

  • Account bonuses
  • Automated savings features
  • Wealth management consulting/coaching services
  • Cash deposits
  • Extensive ATM networks and/or ATM rebates for out-of-network ATM use

An account will rank lower if it doesn’t have a professional-looking website or doesn’t provide an ATM card, or if it imposes restrictive residency requirements or fees for exceeding monthly transaction limits.

A Finance Reporter Who Invests in Readers’ Well-Being

Taxes. Tuition. Cryptocurrency trading. Since 2008, Ron Lieber has answered hard-hitting questions about personal finance as the Your Money columnist.

A man with glasses and a long-sleeve shirt types on a laptop placed on a table. He is seated next to a woman in an orange dress whose face is not visible.

By Sarah Bahr

Times Insider explains who we are and what we do and delivers behind-the-scenes insights into how our journalism comes together.

When Ron Lieber arrived at The Wall Street Journal’s office in 2002 for a job interview, a couple of editors immediately sized him up.

“They said, ‘We know what your beat is: beating the system,’” said Mr. Lieber, who had last worked as a senior writer for Fast Company covering management, design and careers. “And now you’re going to come here and do that for us.”

After helping found the Personal Journal section of The Wall Street Journal and writing a separate money management column, he was hired by The New York Times in 2008 to take over Your Money , a personal finance column. Sixteen years later, he has gained a reputation for offering readers advice — often tinged with his own experience — on headache-inducing issues, like how to navigate the maze of paying for college or prepare for life after a layoff .

“I love introducing readers to characters who they might not think would be the subject of money columns, but who are actually perfectly suited to teach us a thing or three about how the world works,” said Mr. Lieber, whose column appears online and most Saturdays in the Business section.

As a columnist for The Times, he has witnessed two recessions and a pandemic. (In 2009, he even wrote about how his own financial planner had been charged with fraud.) In a recent conversation, he shared the unexpected lessons he had learned in writing the column and the topics he thought might soon dominate the world of personal finance. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

How did you first become interested in finance?

When I was a high school senior in Chicago applying for financial aid for college, I found my way to Roger Koester , who was an associate director of financial aid at Northwestern University. He had an after-hours side gig in his office; in exchange for $45, he’d explain the whole financial aid system to local families who were trying to understand it. He knew exactly what he was talking about and gave me terrific advice.

It was a reminder that there’s always a grown-up somewhere who knows how to beat the system, and if you can just find that grown-up and ask questions, you can help other people beat it, too. I don’t think of myself as the grown-up, but every week, I still feel like I’m searching for the grown-ups who know the answer to whatever thorny consumer question is bedeviling our readers.

What makes for a good column?

When I think about personal finance, there’s a kind of a Venn diagram of possible topics: things that are really expensive; processes that are really complicated; and decisions where emotions can lead us astray if we aren’t careful. I like to think that when I’m at the center of that diagram, I’ve found the right topic.

And then there’s the matter of voice. The best compliment anyone can pay me is to say that my column sounded like I was there in the room with them, explaining the topic at hand. I want it to feel conversational, and not lecture-y, preachy or didactic. That doesn’t mean it’s always friendly — I try my best to punch up at institutions or entities that can take it and deserve it.

If I can find the right topic, and do it in the right voice, I’ve won the week.

Last month, an article by New York magazine’s financial advice columnist on how she was scammed out of $50,000 went viral. Do you think you would’ve fallen for that scam?

Never say never. I’m constantly telling myself that there’s never a reason to rush to do something right now. There’s pretty much always time to call one or three or five people smarter than you or just calmer than you who will ask you levelheaded questions and try to pull you back from the edge of making a big mistake.

What writers and publications do you read to stay on top of your beat?

I read The Wall Street Journal religiously. I’m a big fan of Ramit Sethi, who’s the author of the book “ I Will Teach You to Be Rich ” and a newsletter writer. I love reading Michelle Singletary , who writes the personal finance column for The Washington Post. And I also really like the attitude and the message of Tori Dunlap , who most people know from Instagram and TikTok.

What trends are you watching?

All of the people who’ve been in the work force for their entire career without a traditional pension are starting to retire, and a lot of them are going to run out of money. The question of what’s going to happen when that happens is deeply concerning.

I’m also interested in all of the work that Conor Dougherty and other Times colleagues have been doing around our inability to build more housing in a reasonable fashion. It’s not clear where and how people in their 20s and even 30s are going to buy homes.

Anything else you want to add?

If people are seeing things in the world that don’t make sense — whether they think corruption needs to be exposed, or if they just want to say, “I can’t be the only one who doesn’t understand this thing, could you explain it?” — it’s so helpful for me to know . Some of the work I’m most proud of started with a reader comment on one of my columns. We’re all in this together, and none of us are as smart as all of us.

The Perception of Money, Wealth, and Power: Early Renaissance vs. Nowadays Presentation

The presented project is devoted to comparing the perceptions that can be viewed as dominant for Early Renaissance and modern people. In particular, the perceptions related to the topics of money, wealth, and power are of interest. This project can provide insights into the evolution of mindsets and improve our understanding of modern views.

Topic Review and Bibliography

  • Brucker (2015): Renaissance money and power (Florence).
  • Burke, Clossey, and Fernández-Armesto (2017): European Renaissance: cultural impact on values.
  • Cohn (2012): Renaissance possessions.
  • Huber (2016): Renaissance money and art.
  • Petrocchi (2017): Renaissance business.
  • Huey-ling (2015): money in Renaissance literature; contemporary perspective.
  • Salvatore (2013): Medici: wealth and power.
  • Strathern (2016): Medici: money and art.

This slide describes some of the modern literature that will be employed in the project. For example, Brucker (2015) discusses the Renaissance notions of money and power in Florence. Similarly, Burke, Clossey, and Fernández-Armesto (2017) focus on the European Renaissance values in general. Also, the authors demonstrate the fact that Renaissance values may have been influenced by culture. Cohn (2012), Huber (2016), and Petrocchi (2017) discuss money and wealth to some extent: in the form of possessions or business in general and in relation to art.

Strathern (2016) also considers the relationship between money and art, using the House of Medici as an example. Salvatore (2013) also considers the House of Medici and related values of wealth and power. Finally, Huey-ling’s (2015) work introduces the modern perspective on the topic of money in Renaissance literature.

Conclusions

  • Renaissance is better-researched.
  • Power: not a worthy pursuit; humility and power; more upheavals.
  • Money: can be used for evil or good (art).
  • Wealth: attachment to possessions; Black Death-related interest in balancing secular and spiritual.
  • Led to consumerism?

In sum, it seems that the topic of Renaissance values is well-researched, but they are rarely compared to the modern-day perspective. Still, some conclusions can be drawn from the information provided. For example, in the Renaissance period, power was a questionable pursuit and could be viewed as less stable due to more frequent upheavals (Salvatore, 2013). Also, Salvatore (2013) reports that the period’s population saw a connection between humility and power, suggesting that the former can be the basis of the latter. This view appears to be rather foreign to the modern world.

According to Huber (2016), the concept of money in the Renaissance era included the perception that it could be used for good or evil, and the good usage of money could be related to artist encouragement. As for wealth, Cohn (2012) highlights the importance of the aftermaths of the Black Death for the people of Renaissance: the tragedy taught them to be attached to their possessions and seek a balance between secular and spiritual life. In general, the above-mentioned perceptions on money and wealth are rather familiar to the modern people and might have been connected to the more modern mindset of consumerism. The search for such similarities and differences is the aim of the project.

Methodology

  • Qualitative design.
  • Data collection: literature review and analysis (Renaissance); interviews (modern).

The project is going to work with qualitative data, which is why its design is qualitative. The data collection tools will be defined by the specifics of the data: the Renaissance information is likely to be gleaned from literature reviews and analysis, but modern information can be gathered from interviews with modern people.

Topic Review and Bibliography

Renaissance data collection → Modern data collection → Analysis.

The plan of the work involves two stages of data collection (one for each period) and their analysis. Before the process, the project plan will be finalized and approved; after it, the final report will be prepared.

Results and Implications

  • Focus on similarities and differences.
  • Outcome: improved understanding of concept evolution and their effects on human lives.

The results of the project will focus on the similarities and differences that can be spotted between the periods and their values. These results will be employed to enhance our understanding of the evolution of the mentioned concepts and the effects of the Renaissance period on modern perceptions.

The 'bizarrely' overvalued stock market is poised for a big correction and the smart money is moving into cash, chief strategist says

  • Indicators are pointing to a major correction coming for stocks, market strategist Paul Dietrich says.
  • The B. Riley Wealth chief investment strategist says the market is "bizarrely overvalued."
  • The "smart money," according to Dietrich is moving money into cash.

Insider Today

The stock market looks "bizarrely" overvalued and indicators are pointing to a big correction on the way, according to Paul Dietrich, chief investment strategist of B. Riley Wealth.

Speaking to Yahoo Finance , Dietrich pointed to a handful of indicators in the market, which are all flashing a collective warning sign for stocks.

Red flags are arising in the price-to-earnings ratio of the S&P 500, and multiples mirror levels seen prior to the dot-com bubble crash.

"Every single indicator seems to tell us we're in a historic, historic bubble," Dietrich said. "It's hard to look at that and say that we're not going to see a major, major correction coming. Now is not the time to be putting new money in the market," he warned.

The biggest indicator of a coming correction is "smart money" investors, who are moving out of the stock market and into safer cash equivalents, Dietrich said. He pointed to recent stock sales from billionaires like Jeff Bezos , Warren Buffett , and the Walton family , the heirs to the Walmart empire, as a sign big investors sense the market is poised to correct.

While sales by insiders or big shareholders are often scheduled in advance , they can also be a sign that investors are concerned the market is approaching a peak, Dietrich suggested.

"There's just no ambiguity here. It is bizarrely overvalued," Dietrich said of the stock market. "You're seeing the smart money right now moving massive amounts into cash … It's not that they don't believe in their companies. They do. They know it's just completely overvalued and if they sell it now, they can buy it back cheaper later."

It's unclear what could trigger a coming stock correction, Dietrich said, noting that prior crashes, like the one that preceded the 2008 crisis, were sparked by unpredictable, Black Swan events . A spike in oil prices as a result of geopolitical conflict , or more regional banking troubles stemming from the commercial real estate sector, could set the downfall for stocks in motion, he speculated.

Dietrich has cast himself among the most bearish of Wall Street forecasters at a time when most investors are still feeling bullish about stocks and the economy. Previously, he predicted that the stock market could crash as much as 40% if the US encounters a mild recession.

Trump's bond is now $175 million in fraud case. Here's what the New York attorney general could do if he doesn't pay.

By Katrina Kaufman , Graham Kates

Updated on: March 25, 2024 / 7:46 PM EDT / CBS News

Former President Donald Trump and other defendants in his fraud case won an appeal Monday to have their bond reduced , requiring them now to put up $175 million within 10 days to pause enforcement of a $464 million judgment against them . If Trump fails to post bond, it could leave some of his prized real estate and other assets vulnerable to seizure by the state.

The bond was lowered from $464 million on the day that a 30-day grace period for payment expired. New York Attorney General Letitia James had indicated her office would pursue Trump's assets if he failed to post bond.

"If he does not have funds to pay off the judgment, then we will seek judgment enforcement mechanisms in court, and we will ask the judge to seize his assets," she said during a February interview with ABC News.

Attorneys for Trump wrote in a March 18 filing in the case that it was a "practical impossibility" for the defendants to secure such a large bond.

"Very few bonding companies will consider a bond of anything approaching that magnitude," wrote the lawyers, Alina Habba, Clifford Robert, Christopher Kise and John Sauer. They noted that surety providers often require collateral up to 120% to guarantee the bond, driving the amount Trump might need over $500 million.

Trump claimed to have nearly $500 million in cash in a Truth Social post on March 22. In depositions and testimony in 2023,  he claimed to have between $300 and $400 million.

JD Weisbrot, managing director of the surety operation at Risk Strategies, said Trump's options for amassing the full $464 million were "frankly very limited."

"The issue is that this type of bond is very hazardous in nature to a surety company. And why is that? It's a demand instrument, the bond guarantees that in the event that the defendant loses the appeal, that the sum be immediately made available to the plaintiff," Weisbrot said.

As a result, Weisbrot said surety companies want liquid assets as collateral, specifically cash or a letter of credit, and not hard assets like real estate.

The judgment stems from a civil case in which a judge found Trump and others connected to his company liable for a decade-long scheme to use falsified real estate and net worth valuations to obtain favorable loan and insurance rates. The judge concluded Trump and others gained more than $364 million through the scheme.

Bruce Lederman, an attorney who specializes in real estate law  for the New York firm DL Partners, said James' office has a range of options to choose from in its effort to enforce the judgment if Trump fails to post bond.

Once the deadline passes, "the attorney general can start enforcement proceedings, which could include sending restraining notices, could include sending executions to the sheriff for real property, could include tying up security accounts, could include sending notices to companies that they can't make any payments to Donald Trump personally, or any of the children, the boys, against whom judgments are entered," said Lederman, referring to Trump's adult sons Eric and Donald Trump Jr.

To execute on Trump's real property, James could get judicial liens against the properties.  In New York, the process to sell a property takes 63 days. The sheriff's office must publicly post notice of sale in three places in the town or city where the property is located, and the notice must be published four times throughout that period. After 63 days, there is a sheriff's sale, typically on the courthouse steps.

However, untangling the web of ownership of some of Trump's properties may be challenging. In the event of sale, there are also loans and mortgages that could impact how much the state can even collect - not to mention the disputed valuation of Trump's properties, an issue that was at the heart of the civil fraud trial.

For properties located outside of Manhattan, James has to enter the judgment with local jurisdictions — even those as near as suburban Westchester County, New York, where her office registered the judgment on March 6.

"The New York judgment can be filed in any state and is then entitled to full faith and credit under the Constitution," said Lederman, who noted that Trump's Mar-a-Lago club might be more complicated to seize than other properties. "Enforcement rights in other states would be based upon the law of the state where property is located. For example, Florida does not allow a sale of a primary residence."

Adam Pollock,  a former New York assistant attorney general, said a restraining notice would limit Trump's ability to spend freely.

"A restraining notice … says, 'Don't spend money, don't transfer any property, until you pay us.' And for good reason. You shouldn't be out, you know, fueling up your jets with $20,000 of gas, when you owe the people in the state of New York nearly $500 million," said Pollock.

Pollock said James' office could get a bank execution and give it to a New York sheriff or marshal, who can then walk into a bank branch and drain Trump's account. A bank normally has to wait at least 27 days to turn over the money in an account — unless the plaintiff is the state of New York, in which case, the bank is supposed to transfer the funds immediately.

James can also sign an execution forcing Trump to turn over his personal property.

"If I have a judgment against you, I get to take any property I can find of yours. Whether it's your Rembrandt, your Rolls Royce, or your iPad, or like your 500 LLCs that you happen to own," said Pollock.

Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, could ultimately end up among the one in 100 Americans whose pay is withheld so creditors can collect.

Adam Kaufmann, an attorney at Lewis Baach Kaufmann Middlemiss, said the state could garnish Trump's income and revenues from the Mar-a-Lago Club, for example.

"You could have a president of the United States having his wages garnished by a creditor," Kaufmann said.

‘Old-fashioned embezzlement’: where did all of FTX’s money go?

Sam Bankman-Fried oversaw its collapse – now the crypto firm is in bankruptcy proceedings as contentious as his fraud trial

S am Bankman-Fried, former CEO of the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX , presided over a spectacular collapse that cost his customers billions of dollars. He argues in court filings that anyone owed money by FTX “will eventually be paid in full”. The US government says he’s living in a fantasy land. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Thursday.

Last week, FTX’s caretaker, John Ray III, appointed to oversee the company’s bankruptcy proceedings, reminded the court that Bankman-Fried had masterminded a “colossal fraud”, lived a “life of delusion”, and called Bankman-Fried’s lawyers’ claim that no one had been harmed as “categorically, callously, and demonstrably false”.

Bankman-Fried was sentenced after being convicted of fraud and conspiracy to launder money in the multibillion-dollar collapse of his cryptocurrency exchange. If given the maximum penalty, he would have faced 100 years in prison. His lawyers asked for a six-year sentence. The US government wanted to see the 32-year-old ex-CEO, who defrauded his own customers out of $8bn, sentenced to 40 to 50 years.

Attorneys for the Department of Justice argued that Bankman-Fried’s sentencing submission shows attempts “to reframe his crimes as mere mistakes or misunderstandings” – and if released at a young age there is “significant likelihood” he would commit another fraud.

Judge Lewis Kaplan doled out two and a half decades to Bankman-Fried. But even as the hubbub over the founder of FTX crests and then subsides, the bankruptcy proceedings of the cryptocurrency exchange are heating up, becoming as contentious as Bankman-Fried’s blockbuster trial. They are likely to continue long after he reports to prison.

FTX: new technology, old-fashioned embezzlement

The crypto entrepreneur laid a smokescreen, spending millions of customer funds on his lifestyle, drawing in politicians and celebrities with donations and endorsement deals, and fronting a pseudo-philosophy of effective altruism that boiled down to the greater the profits, the greater the good.

Last year, Ray testified to Congress that FTX’s collapse was “really old-fashioned embezzlement. This is just taking money from customers and using it for your own purposes.” Justice department prosecutors echoed his statements in the immediate aftermath of Bankman-Fried’s conviction.

At trial, the court heard from an accounting expert who said that $11.3bn in customer funds were supposed to be held at Alameda Research, FTX’s hedge fund arm. But only $2.3bn could be located. The rest had gone toward investments, political contributions, charity foundations and real estate purchases. FTX, remarkably, had left almost no records of transactions.

“The harm was vast. The remorse is non-existent. Effective altruism, at least as lived by Samuel Bankman-Fried, was a lie,” Ray said in a recent court submission, adding that he and his team had spent “over a year stewarding the estate from a metaphorical dumpster fire”.

At Bankman-Fried’s sentencing hearing, Kaplan agreed. He said FTX’s customers had lost some $8bn and that its investors had lost $1.7bn.

Who gets paid in FTX’s bankruptcy, and how?

FTX collapsed over 10 days in November 2022 and soon after filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy – a statute used to reorganize a failing company “in the public interest”. FTX’s exchange, its main product, was not so much reorganized as shut down.

On 31 January, FTX announced it would not reopen its exchange and would instead liquidate all its assets. It has promised to pay its account holders the value of the deposited crypto in dollars.

A series of civil lawsuits have challenged decisions made in the handling of FTX after Bankman-Fried’s departure, however. The company says it will pay creditors based on the value of their cryptocurrency at the time of FTX’s bankruptcy, when bitcoin was trading at just over $17,000. Bitcoin is currently four times more valuable, trading at over $67,000 – one of the main reasons FTX’s representatives say they can pay customers back. Plaintiffs in the suits argue FTX owes them the higher value, though.

Bankman-Fried invested $500m in the AI startup Anthropic when it was valued at $3.4bn. It’s now valued at about $15bn, and FTX plans to sell the stake for some $884m .

In a lawsuit filed in January, four FTX creditors said the plan to return customer funds did not reflect the company’s obligations under Chapter 11 bankruptcy law. Some have objected to their crypto holdings being converted to dollars – “dollarization” – and the transparency that would come with it.

Last week, Ray pushed contentions about visibility aside. The CEO said he could not return the crypto assets because they don’t exist. “A jury has concluded beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr Bankman-Fried stole them and converted them into other things,” he wrote in a court filing.

Kaplan also rejected Bankman-Fried’s argument that customers could be paid back, and compared the former billionaire to “a thief who takes his loot to Las Vegas”, saying that Bankman-Fried was not entitled to leniency by trying to use his winnings to pay back what he stole.

Moreover, FTX bankruptcy claims have become a hot commodity, with the London-based distressed asset investor Attestor buying up the company’s assets at rock bottom prices. Attestor is now in a New York court defending itself from a Panamanian holder of an FTX account who wants the bankruptcy claim – now worth more than double – back.

FTX shareholders get zilch

One class of creditor is unlikely to see any of their money returned: FTX shareholders. Millions of shares were held by Tiger Global management, the Ontario teachers’ pension plan, Sequoia Capital, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, NFL quarterback legend Tom Brady and his ex-wife Gisele Bündchen, who both advertised for the company. Their stakes , once valued at tens of millions, are assumed to be worthless.

The bankrupt FTX has likewise had little success clawing back the charitable and political donations Bankman-Fried made, including $44.6m to Democratic candidates and causes, and at least $23.9m to Republicans in the last election cycle. In total, FTX dished out of $93m in political donations between March 2020 and November 2022. In February 2023, the exchange asked for its donations to be returned, claiming it would sue, but has not followed through with the threat.

But some of the beneficiaries of FTX’s PR largesse, designed some claim to influence regulations around crypto, have returned their donations: New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art returned $550,000 it received from FTX in 2022. Stanford, where Bankman-Fried’s parents work as law professors, pledged to return a $5.5m donation.

Academics raise questions about FTX’s bankruptcy

A recently published academic paper claims that FTX was placed in the hands of legal counsel, Sullivan & Cromwell, which had “undisclosed potential conflicts of interest” in its dealings with the company and Bankman-Fried “due to apparent errors, omissions and deceptions”.

Law professors Jonathan Lipson at Temple University and David Skeel at the University of Pennsylvania contend that “FTX is a cautionary tale about the power that lawyers have to frame, control, and profit from” claims about the public interest and that the bankruptcy included “bargain-basement asset-sales to favored insiders”.

In their paper, the academics called for an independent examiner to look at how the precipitous bankruptcy was handled.

“It doesn’t appear from the public record that they made any serious effort to restart the exchanges,” Lipson told the Guardian. “Sullivan & Cromwell had an unusually long and important relationship with FTX and with Bankman-Fried before bankruptcy, so our concern is that the appearance of a conflict of interest caused them to panic and mislead Bankman-Fried into giving up control of the company, which then may have distorted the criminal case and hurt depositors and creditors.”

‘His redemption narrative’

In a text exchange with the Vox reporter Kelsey Piper , Bankman-Fried appeared to diminish the underpinnings of the effective altruism ideology he once championed.

“I feel bad for those who get fucked by it, by this dumb woke game westerners play where we say all the right shibboleths and so everyone likes us.”

Last month, Bankman-Fried replaced his trial lawyer with Marc Mukasey, who has represented Donald Trump, and Alex Mashinsky, the former CEO of the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange Celsius, another mogul accused of fraud. Mukasey has described Bankman-Fried as a hard-working billionaire who avoided the trappings of great wealth and fame, and whose brusque social manner could be ascribed to “neurodiversity”.

In January, the Yale Law professor Ian Ayres and the Stanford Law professor John Donohue, two friends of the Bankman-Fried family, published an essay in Project Syndicate making the argument that FTX had sufficient assets to make its customers whole.

And Daniel Chapsky, the former head of data science at FTX, wrote that Bankman-Fried was only interested in helping bankruptcy lawyers and had “worked almost around the clock, to the point of exhaustion”.

But the government has pushed back on those efforts. “The point is that the defendant is motivated to launch his redemption narrative and has already been thinking about how to spin it. It is realistic that he will settle on a narrative, lean into it, and convince other people to part with their money based on lies and the promise of false hope,” prosecutors said in a filing.

At his sentencing, Bankman-Fried’s redemption narrative was unsuccessful. He said he was “sorry about what happened” and that he had made “a series of bad decisions”, but Judge Kaplan still called him remorseless, castigating him for “never a word of remorse for the commission of terrible crimes”.
