The 2021-batch Indian Police Service officer Suraj Gunjal wanted to put on the khaki since he was in the seventh standard. He developed a strong penchant to be ‘the-man-in-uniform’ after seeing two senior police officers who have now left an indelible mark on the entire police force.

He firmly believes IPS Vishwas Nangare Patil and IPS Krishna Prakash, their persona and style of working all have been etched in the hearts and minds of people in Maharashtra. And that he was also not left unaffected by their repute. This is why they are his role models, he explains.

Gunjal adds his becoming an IPS officer was not something that happened by chance or fate but for him it was a dream he saw when he was in school. And that he worked hard to turn the dream into reality.

“It was my dream since seventh standard. I saw Vishwas Nangare Patil and Krishna Prakash Sir work in my district as SP. I wanted to be like them”, IPS Suraj Gunjal

When asked how only seeing some police officers can be an inspiration for the young aspirants of the civil services, Gunjal said, “Once you see (them) then you imagine yourself like them. Then you try to find out how to become like them. You get information. You join the classes. You get trained. You take the guidance.”

He cleared the coveted civil services, one of the toughest examinations in the world, in first attempt and bagged an All- India Rank of 353. Gunjal has done B.E in Civil Engineering. He comes from Ahmednagar district, where Nangare Patil and Prakash served as Superintendent of Police in their early days in the police department.

After clearing the UPSC exam with higher ranks in 2021, Gunjal underwent extensive training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad for almost two years and then in September 2023 was given the responsibility of Akot Police Station in Akola as the Probationary Assistant Superintendet of Police.

Gunjal has got his first posting in the textile of Malegaon where he assumed the office on December 18, 2023. As an Assistant SP, he has been given the charge of SDPO Malegaon Camp and SDPO Malegaon City, Sub-Divisions.

This is just a short introduction. A detailed interview may follow this.

IPS officer Vishwas Nangre Patil’s Win All Your Battles is an engrossing autobiography

Vishwas Nangre Patil, the police officer who got the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry for his role in the counter terrorist operations after 26/11, has written an engrossing autobiography that is also meant to be a self-help book.

IPS officer Vishwas Nangre Patil’s Win All Your Battles is an engrossing autobiography

Vishwas Nangre Patil, the Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Mumbai City, is best known for his role in the counter-terrorist operations launched after a series of deadly attacks orchestrated by the terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba shook all of India, perhaps the world, in 2008. When I learnt that his book Kar Har Maidan Fateh was translated by Subha Pande from Marathi into English as Win All Your Battles , I promptly got myself a copy to read. I wanted to know what the man who got the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry had to say.

As someone who has grown up in Mumbai, it is hard to forget those images of dead bodies strewn across multiple locations in the city but the tragedy that unfolded at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel remains in the foreground thanks to popular culture. Most recently, it was Sashi Kiran Tikka’s film Major (2022) , starring Adivi Sesh and based on the life of Indian Army officer Sandeep Unnikrishnan, that revisited the devastating loss of lives in November 2008.

Patil writes, “Usually, the police arrive at the crime scene after the crime is committed, but here, the crime was taking place as we arrived and people were losing lives…not for a moment was I afraid of death or was shaken. I went ahead confidently and fought the terrorists to the best of my ability…My goal was clear: die or do for the country.”

I picked up Patil’s book curious to know what drives a person to take up a job wherein they put their life on the line to ensure that others can feel safe and sleep peacefully. I also wanted to give myself a chance to learn about life in the Indian Police Service even though I do not romanticize the uniform since many who wear it abuse their power to harass the vulnerable.

Patil’s book offers a window into the rigorous training that people have to go through before they are entrusted with the task of cracking down on crime. He writes at length about his days at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration and the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy after clearing the Union Public Service Commission exams. The trainees were expected to be “physically fit” in addition to being “well-versed in law, skilled in crime investigation and able administrators”. They were also taught to avoid the use of “third-degree methods to get a confession because these go against human rights.”

Apart from being the story of an officer, it is about how a young man from “Kokrud, a small, picturesque village nestled in the Sahyadris” grew into a confident person committed to serving his country. His first-person narrative is endearing because he is not full of himself. He makes himself vulnerable in the book, and shares how he met with challenges. He writes, “I used to feel a lot of anxiety in the academy. I was filled with an inferiority complex and felt suffocated in that environment filled with academic excellence and scholarly people.”

While the form is that of an autobiography, it could easily be classified as a self-help book because of the content. Patil wants to inspire, especially “youth from rural backgrounds” who tend to face “a lot of suffocation” when they make their way into “the steely framework of the Indian bureaucracy established by the British”. While “the unrestrained and independent existence that is on offer” has an aspirational quality to it, the same can be hugely frustrating. Some of his candid descriptions give the impression of etiquette training at a finishing school.

Patil writes, “Just as we had rules for behaviour, there were rules for conversation and dining. We were taught table manners. We were taught that we should sit only after the seniors and ladies were seated. We should not eat fast and lick our fingers. We shouldn’t gulp down water but sip it slowly.” If you thought that was enough, wait, there is a lot more coming up.

Patil and his IPS batchmates were instructed to avoid wasting food, eat small portions, not mix things on the plate, and not make sounds with their mouth or read the newspaper while eating. He adds, “We shouldn’t look for good chicken or mutton pieces during a buffet. We must not burp and if we do, we must ask to be excused.” In addition, they were told to “speak politely about positive things” and avoid commenting on the food after the meal was over.

If you are wondering whether this book is too serious for your taste, sample this anecdote: “Grilling physical training earlier in the morning followed by a sumptuous breakfast made it difficult to sit through the boring theory classes with our eyes open in the air-conditioned classrooms. Many of my classmates would be snoring with their eyes open.” When the administration got a whiff of what the back benchers were up to, the ACs were uninstalled. The book is peppered with quotes from and references to writers like Rabindranath Tagore, Amrita Pritam, Viktor Frankl, H.W. Longfellow, Kalidasa, B.R. Ambedkar, Jyotirao Phule, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, Upamanyu Chatterjee, and Pablo Neruda. Patil also draws upon Bollywood films such as Anand (1971), Sarfarosh (1999), Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001), Chak De India (2007), Toilet Ek Prem Katha (2017), Pad Man (2018) to connect with his readers. His friend, actor Akshay Kumar , has written the book’s foreword.

My favourite part of the book is where Patil gives us insights about the “daily work pressures and stress” that police officers have to deal with. It challenges stereotypes from films that portray them either as heroic and superhuman, or as corrupt and sadistic. Patil acknowledges that “even the senior officers lose their inherent sensitivity with time” and that those who wear the uniform often lose “their relationship and exposure to the arts and finer things in life.” This is not a rant but an effort to show what things look like behind the scenes.

The tone of the book is elder-brotherly because the author’s aim is “to guide my younger brothers and sisters in their lives”. He wants them to learn from “the knocks” that he faced, and the “solutions and cures” that he found. I have not read the original book in Marathi, published by Mehta Publishing House, so I cannot say much about Pande’s skills as a translator, but the English translation published by HarperCollins India is worth reading.

INDIA:  Vishwas Nangare Patil is an Indian Police Service Officer (IPS) who emerged as a hero during the 2008 Mumbai Terror Attacks. For his bravery and courage, IPS Patil bagged the award of President’s Police Medal, aka Gallantry award, in 2015.

During the 2008 Terror Attacks, Vishwas Nangare Patil served as deputy commissioner of the police in South Mumbai. Patil experienced the horror of the attacks while battling terrorists in the Taj Hotel . He also shot one in the leg, emerging as an epitome of bravery and idealism for every Indian.

IPS Patil narrates his 2008 terror attack experience

Sharing his experience of the 2008 terror attacks on The Ranveer Show podcast, IPS Patil added,  “Mayhem I have to witness when I reached over there. Generally, police officers arrive at a crime scene after it happens, but, in this case, crime was happening, and innocent people were being killed. Foreigners, senior citizens, and women were crying for help.”

He elaborated further,  “I loaded the Glock approaching the first floor, where we found two girls injured in the pool of blood. We helped them and later approached the second floor. We spotted three terrorists. There was no time to aim. I took the position and fired rounds at them. During the firing, Taj’s security chief Sunil Kudiyadi got injured.”

IPS Patil also added that the firing was crucial; if it hadn’t happened, many people could have been massacred that day.  “This type of opportunity you get once in a lifetime for which I wore the uniform for which I joined the IPS. To be a martyr for the country or to fight for the country, this is the best opportunity I have,”  he stated.

IPS Patil’s journey as a writer

Following IPS Patil’s bravery in the 2008 attacks, his journey continues with notable works. Besides his working accolades, he has also penned numerous books providing life lessons and knowledge to Indian youth. Patil’s autobiographical book “ Mann Mein Hai Vishwas”  acted as a navigation for UPSC aspirants.

IPS Patil’s journey as a writer didn’t stop at  “Mann Mein Hain Vishwas”  he later penned another book , “Kar Har Maidan Fateh,”  which showcased his journey after being selected for the Indian Police Services. The second book chronicled the struggles and challenges one has to face while serving in India’s prestigious services.

The massive success of  “Mann Mein Hain Vishwas”  recently led to its English publication. The English version of the book is titled  “Head Held High.”  Prominent Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar also presented the book.

Presenting the book, Khiladi Kumar wrote,  “Presenting with pride & happiness filled in my heart, my friend Vishwas’ books! Knowing him personally for so long, Head Held High and Win All Your Battles are not just titles of books but mantras and the value system he lives by in his everyday life! More power to you @vishwasnp.”

Excerpt of the week: Maharashtra IPS officer relives his journey from a village boy to saheb

Senior Mumbai police officer Vishwas Nangre Patil. (File photo| PTI)

I got a call for the physical test for the post of PSI a week before the prelim exam of the UPSC. I was not used to exercising; besides, I had lost weight due to the unhealthy food that I ate in Mumbai and Thane.

I could hardly do a couple of push-ups. I could not sprint for the required 800 metres. On the day of the physical test, I went to the police ground at Naygaon. I met with PSI Kamble, who hailed from the neighbouring village. Many a time, he would visit the area near Petit Library in style, riding a Bullet motorcycle and wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses, to meet his friends.

We mingled with his friends, in the hopes that he would offer us tea. He came close to me, patted my back and wished me heartily, saying, "You are lucky, Vishwas. You must emerge victorious today. Such an opportunity comes only once in a lifetime. You too must prove that you are a tiger, like me, from the banks of the Warna River. You are sure to become a police sub-inspector."

I mustered up my courage and strength. Teams of six candidates each had to complete two laps on the 400-metre-long track at full speed. I picked up speed immediately after the whistle was sounded but suffered cramps in my stomach after 200 metres. My speed reduced and I did the second lap walking.

PSI Kamble was cheering me on, but I had no strength left to run. When I stepped out of the track, a frustrated PSI Kambale shook me and rebuked me, saying, "Only a loser would give up this God-sent opportunity." I said, "Sir, if Lady Luck smiles at me, you will be saluting me around this time next year."

He said, "You are free to have unrealistic big dreams. Now go and study instead of wasting your time making empty promises. If you become a big boss, I would not be ashamed to salute a tiger coming from the banks of the Warna."

Tired, I returned to my room. My entire body was aching. Nimat gave me a tablet of Combiflam. I had to revise for the prelim examination. To successfully accomplish this, I had maintained a 500-page register for general studies preparation, with 100 pages allotted to each section.

Whatever I found important, I jotted down in the relevant section of the register. This ensured that I was not just dragging through the track, but carefully picking and plucking the flowers. I had stored these pearls of knowledge in the register, and it was time to realize their worth.

I had also highlighted important sections in the general studies study kit and Tata McGraw Hill. While studying, I started by reading the entire chapter first, though I understood little. During that preliminary reading, I underlined the difficult words, found their meanings in the dictionary, assigned them a number and jotted down the meaning on the margin of the same page.

In the second reading, I lay emphasis on comprehension, underlining the important lines. In the third reading, I wrote down the précis of every paragraph in a line or two in my micro notes. I marked these notes with blue, red or black pencils, depending on the importance of the content.

Personal Life :

Vishwas Nangare Patil, one of Maharashtra’s most popular decorated IPS officers was born in a small village near Kolhapur in 1973.

His parents were not very well educated – his father Narayan Nangare Patil had completed his education till the 4th standard & his mother till the 2nd standard.

Education and UPSC :

In his childhood, he was a good student and scored 88 percent marks in the SSC exam.

For his 12th standard, he took the Science stream but later opted for Arts for graduation. During this period, he decided to apply for UPSC exams.

After being selected for IPS at a young age of 25, he was posted in Dhule, Nanded, Aurangabad and many other cities in Maharashtra. After being selected for IPS, he continued his love of education and garnered many additional educational qualifications like MBA (Police Management) and LLB

As of 2016, he was holding the current position of Special Inspector General (IG) of Aurangabad.

Brave Role in countering 26/11 Mumbai Attacks :

Patil was DCP (Zone 1) in Mumbai during this period.

Immediately after realizing that firing happened at the Taj hotel, he did not lose a single moment. At 9:40 PM the terrorists had entered, and by 9:51 within 11 minutes of the attack, Patil and his bodyguard entered the Taj building to start their search. They threw away their phones to ensure that calls from family and friends don’t deter their resolution.

At the start, there was a wedding party happening in the ‘Crystal’ hall of the building. There were 400-500 people there. Due to their quick action, terrorists were unable to enter the venue, potentially saving the lives of hundreds of people.

During the whole time, Nangare Patil’s family had no idea about his well-being and they had already started preparing for his funeral at his native place seeing the deaths of officers like Hemant Karkare, Ashok Kamte, and others.

At 4.30 AM on the next day, another IPS officer listened to his voice on the wireless and communicated to his family about his safety. Around 7.00 AM he returned home after the NSG commandos took control of the rescue operation.

He was awarded a President’s medal (shaurya padak) for his role during this gun battle.

Life Outside Work :

In an interview, he mentioned his love for staying fit, setting high goals, and working hard to achieve them. He is also quite popular on social media and YouTube and many of his speeches are very motivational for the youth. He has also written a book titled Man Me Hai Vishwaas  in Marathi.

It is an autobiography and has received a great response from Marathi readers.

Hobbies : Reading books, watching movies and maintaining his fitness regime.

As a senior journalist I would request him to write a regular column in print media for youths suggesting how and why they should be away from religious fanaticism.
