The sacred city of Ayodhya is home to the magnificent temple known as the Ayodhya Ram Mandir. Situated in the northern part of India, the city is on the banks of the Saryu River. Constructed at the birthplace of the most revered deity in Hinduism, Rama, it is known as Ram Janmbhoomi.

It is thought that Rama was born precisely at the location where Ram Mandir was constructed by his ancestors to honour his life and birth. However, around the sixteenth century, the Mughal ruler Babur demolished the temple and built the Babri Masjid, a mosque. Later, in 1992, a group of Hindu militants destroyed the mosque, setting off violent riots and other religious unrest throughout the nation. For years, there has been debate and litigation around the ownership and status of the property.

Ayodhya Ram Mandir’s history is complicated, connected with arguments and obstacles. The completion of Ram Mandir represents the end of a long-running dispute. The Ram Mandir’s artistically carved sandstone, which includes domes, pillars, and engravings whispering tales of Rama’s journey, is a reflection of traditional Hindu architecture. The temple is more than merely a monument; it represents tenacity, optimism, and a path toward peace. Because of this, the Ayodhya Ram Mandir is far more than an ordinary building; it’s an important representation of spiritual principles, cultural history, and firm faith.

Essay: Lord Ram, the role model of the perfect human being, by Pavan K Varma

Pavan k varma, author of a new book on the ramcharitmanas, writes that in the face of the distortion of the image of ram, it is imperative to understand what he stands for.

349pp, ₹699; Westland

After decades of dispute, the Supreme Court has finally enabled the building of a Ram temple at the assumed place of birth of the Lord. This is good news, since it not only ends the sterile communal acrimony on this matter, but because a befitting temple for Rama in Ayodhya would be an appropriate way to inspire Hindus to the compassionate, caring, loving and benevolent persona that one of India’s most loved deities represents.

However, Ram has been in the news for all the wrong reasons too. Illiterate bigots have weaponized the slogan ‘Jai Shri Ram’ for wanton acts of violence, crime and hatred, which are anathema to what Ram actually stands for. These lumpen elements do not know that Ram is maryada purushottam , the epitome of rectitude, the touchstone of impeccable behaviour, the role model of the perfect human being, and the very incarnation of saumya rasa , harmonious equilibrium.

In the face of the deliberate distortion of the image of Lord Ram, it is particularly imperative now for ordinary people to understand who he is and what he really stands for. This has been brought out in the most lyrical and exemplary manner by Tulsidas (1532-1623 CE) in his remarkable epic Ramcharitmanas . Based on the much earlier Sanskrit epic Ramayana (dated variously between fifth century BCE and the first century BCE) by Valmiki, the Ramcharitmanas is a shorter version of the same story, but with the inimitable stamp of Tulsi’s loftiness of mind and sheer poetic genius. Although shorter, it is nevertheless an epic, consisting of 12,800 lines divided into 1,073 stanzas, and seven kands or sections.

Mahatma Gandhi regarded the Ramcharitmanas ‘as the greatest book in all devotional literature’. In north India, in particular, the Manas is equivalent to the Bible for most Hindus. The book also ranks among the greatest works of literature in the world. Given the great impact of the work, especially since it was consciously written not in Sanskrit but in Awadhi, the spoken and understood language of the masses, the historian Vincent Smith has called Tulsi the greatest man of his age in India, greater than even Akbar himself. The linguist Sir George Griffith has described him as ‘the greatest leader of the people after the Buddha’.

'Ramavataram', 1828. A lithograph from L'Inde Français, 1828. From the collection of Jean Claude Carriere. (Print Collector/Getty Images)

How does Tulsi profile Ram? For him, Rama is, in the words of the sage Valmiki, sab ke priya sab ke hitkari (beloved of all and loved by all). He is benevolence incarnate, chivalrous and valorous but always gentle and caring, compassionate towards the weak and the vulnerable, and magnanimous towards the enemy even when he chastises them for what is wrong. Countless examples can be given to illustrate this central message of Tulsi, but given the constraints of space I will mention only a few. In Tulsi’s famous stanza describing the birth of Rama, he writes in the very first line: ‘ Bhaye pragata kripala, deen dayala ….’. The birth of Rama, Tulsi says, heralded the one who is merciful, and who is eternally considerate to the weak and needy. Further on in this stanza, Tulsi describes Ram as ‘ karuna sukh sagar, sab guna aagar ’ — one who is the very reservoir of kindness and joy, and endowed with every auspicious attribute. He calls him also ‘ jana anuragi ’ — one for whom each member of the populace is beloved, and for whom he is equally so.

When Rama meets Kaikeyi, one of Dashrath’s queens, who has conspired to unfairly deprive him of his kingdom and banish him to the forest for 14 years, he is not angry or vengeful. On the contrary, he is forgiving, polite, affectionate and the very picture of equanimity. Completely in conformity with his essential character of maryada purushottam , for which he is venerated by millions, he says to Kaikeyi: Suna Janani soi suta badbhagi, jo pitu maat bachan anuragi (Listen mother, that son is blessed who has the opportunity to lovingly obey his mother and father).

Pavan K Varma (Courtesy Westland)

It is most instructive too to understand Tulsi’s description of Ram Rajya, that social utopia that every devotee or bhakt of the Lord cherishes. Ram Rajya, Tulsi says, is a place where, ‘ Daihik daivik, bhautik tapa, Ram Rajya nahin kahuhi byapa, sab nar karahin paraspar priti, chalahin svadharma nirat shruti niti (None suffers from physical, spiritual or material disability, everyone lives with love and harmony, and each follows their religion peacefully)’. For the misguided who use the name of Rama to inflict violence and cruelty on others, it is essential that they actually understand what, according to Tulsi, are Ram’s views in this regard. The Lord himself sums up his conviction — and in many ways illustrates the essence of Hindu religion — when he tells his younger brother Bharat: ‘ Parahita saris dharam nahi bhai, parpida sam nahin athmai (The welfare of others is the greatest dharma, and injury to others the greatest sin)’.

Read more: Review: Adi Shankaracharya - Hinduism’s Greatest Thinker by Pavan K Varma

The sincere purpose of this book is to bring selections of Tulsidas’ great ode to Ram to the largest number of readers in a readable, accessible and enjoyable form. The Ramcharitmanas is an epic. It is a brilliant literary work, scintillating from beginning till end. However, since it is an epic, and is written in Awadhi, not everybody may be able to — in spite of their best intentions — read it from beginning to end, or to comprehend the full meaning of the stanzas. Yet, it is too great a work of literary and spiritual value — full of nuggets of sheer wisdom — not to be read at all. The attempt, therefore, is to present a briefer version of the epic, with carefully chosen selections that reflect the best examples — from my point of view — of the greatness of Tulsi’s writings, and the inspiring profile of Lord Ram. Given the enormous richness of the material, the selection itself was a very onerous task. Along with the selections, translations in both Hindi and English are provided. These have been taken from the Gita Press, which stand out for their fidelity and linguistic quality. Finally, my commentary has been appended to each selection, so that the reader can assimilate not only the text, but also the context, background, characters, reasoning and meaning of the poet’s narrative.

It is only when ordinary Indians realize the real values associated with maryada purushottam Ram, and that too from the pen of Tulsi, one of his most devoted bhakts, that we can genuinely say — without the mutilating distortions — Jai Shri Ram .

Pavan K Varma is an author and politician. His latest book is The Greatest Ode to Lord Ram: Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas, published by Westland, March 2020. He is also the author of Adi Shankaracharya: Hinduism’s Greatest Thinker.

Hello Friend, In this post “ Essay On Ram Mandir Ayodhya | Ram Temple Ayodhya Essay In English “, We will read about “ Ram Mandir Ayodhya ” from history to now as an Essay In Details. So…

Let’s Start…

Essay On Ram Mandir Ayodhya

In 1528, Babri Masjid was built in Ayodhya under the supervision of Mir Baqi ( General of Babar ). But the people of Ayodhya say that Babri Masjid was built by breaking the Ram temple.

In 1853, for the first time, there was a communal fight over it and in 1859 the British allowed Muslims to worship inside the structure and Hindus outside on the platform.

In 1885, Mahant Raghuvar Das proposed before the court to get the construction done on the platform. On December 23, 1949, a statue of Lord Rama is found here, due to which there are riots among Hindu Muslims .

And because of these riots, the entire area is banned by the government. In 1950, Mahant Raghuvar Das filed a case to remove the ban on worshiping. In 1959, Nirmohi Akhara files the case and says that this entire area should be given to the Hindus to worship.

In 1961, the Sunni Waqf Board also files a case and says that this entire area belongs to Muslims because there was a mosque here earlier and we used to offer Namaz.

During this time, Vishwa Hindu Parishad is formed in support of Hindus. In 1986, the Faizabad court gave permission for the Hindus to worship over the entire area. And its Against Muslims formed Babri Masjid Committee which claimed the entire area for Muslims.

In 1986, a group is formed to represent Ram Ji’s idol named Ram Lalla Virajman . And in the year 1990, LK Advani took a rath yatra from Somnath to Ayodhya due to which the riots reached the stream level.

Due to the riots in 1991, the UP government took control of the entire disposed area. On 6 December 1992 Kar Sevaks demolished the mosque and communal riots spread throughout India.

On 16 December 1992, the Librahan Commission was created to inquire into the riots. And during this time the government proposed to build a temple, mosque, library, and museum at this disputed place but people opposed it.

In 2002, the Central Government formed a committee called “Ayodhya Vibhag” whose work was to resolve the dispute by negotiating between the two sides.

In April 2002, Allahabad High Court asks “ASI” to investigate and builds a three-judge bench for its hearing in Lucknow.

According to the ASI report, there was a temple in Ayodhya during the 12th century and a mosque in 1528. But no proof was found about what was between the 12th century to 15th century.

And taking all these things into consideration, the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court gave its verdict on 30 September 2010 in which it said that the place where Ramamurthi is found will be given to Ramlala Virajaman Group , Sita Rasoi, Ram Chabootara will be given to Nirmohi Akhara , And this remaining space will be given to the Sunni Waqf Board .

On 9 May 2011, the Supreme Court put the decision of the High Court on hold. In February 2016, Subramanian Swamy filed a case to finalize the Ayodhya case.

In March 2017, Supreme Court Chief Justice KS Kelkar asked the two sides to resolve the matter by talking among themselves.

But till December 2017, many appeals were made by the Allahabad High Court against many people. The Supreme Court said that it will give its verdict in January 2019.

The Supreme Court set up a bench of judges in which Includes Justices Ranjan Gogoi, Sharad Arbind Bobde, DY Chandrachud, Ashok Bhusan, and S.Abdul Nazeer .

Sushil Kumar Jain was representing Nirmohi Akhara, CS Vaidyanathan was representing Ramlala Virajaman and Rajiv Dhawan was representing the Sunni Waqf Board in the Supreme Court .

And the Supreme Court also asks all the groups to submit the molding of relief. On 9 November 2019, the Supreme Court gave its decision and said that 2.77 acres of land would be given to Ramlala Virajman and 5 acres of land would be given to Sunni Waqf Board .

SOClALlST THOUGHT OF DR. RAMMANOHAR LOHlA_00.1

SOClALlST THOUGHT OF DR. RAM MANOHAR LOHlA

  • Lohia made a significant contribution in the field of socialist thought in India, he always laid greater emphasis on the combination of Gandhian ideals with socialist thought.

SOClALlST THOUGHT OF DR. RAMMANOHAR LOHlA_20.1

Table of Contents

Introduction

  • Historically, the politics of social justice  and socialism in India have gone hand in hand with the empowerment and assertion of communities belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC), Extremely Backward Castes (EBC) and Dalits.
  • The freedom fighter and socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia envisioned this socio-political combination in the 1960s.
  • He advanced the concept on the premise that only the economic, political and social empowerment of the backward and marginalised castes would usher in India’s real independence which guaranteed justice and equality in society.

Lohia’s Approach to Seven Revolutions

Rammonohar Lohia articulated his approach in what he called Seven Revolutions such as:

  • Equality between man and woman,
  • Struggle against political, economic and spiritual inequality based on skin colour,
  • Removal of inequality between backward and high castes based on traditions and special opportunity for the backward.
  • Majors against foreign enslavement in different forms, economic equality, and planned production.
  • Removal of capitalism
  • Against unjust encroachments on private life, non-proliferation of weapons and reliance on Satyagraha were the basic elements of his thought.

Lohia’s analysis of the principles of democratic socialism

  • In his book on Marx, Gandhi and Socialism, Lohia made an analysis of the principles of democratic socialism as an appropriate philosophy for the successful operation of constructive programmes.
  • He believed that through the principles of democratic socialism the economy of a developing country could be improved.
  • Although Dr Lollia was a supporter of dialectical materialism he put greater emphasis on consciousness.
  • Lohia on Caste and Class
  • According to Dr Lohia, the classes represent the social mobilisation process and the castes are symbols of conservative forces.
  • All human history, he said, has always been “an internal movement between caste and classes – caste loosens into classes and classes crystallise into castes”.

Lohia’s Decentralized Socialism

  • He was an exponent of decentralised socialism. According to him small machines, cooperative labour and village government, operate as democratic forces against capitalist forces.

Four Pillar State concept

  • Lohia was very popular for his Four Pillar State concept.
  • He considered village, mandal (district), province and centra1government as the four pillars of the state.
  • He was in favour of villages having police and welfare functions.

Lohia’s theory of New Socialism

  • Lohia propounded his theory of New Socialism at Hyderabad in 1959.
  • This theory had six basic elements. They were equalitarian standards in the areas of income and expenditure, growing economic interdependence, world parliament system based on adult franchise, democratic freedoms inclusive of right to private life, Gandhian technique of individual and collective civil disobedience, and dignity and rights of common man.
  • In his Panchamarlii conference address in 1952 he said, “The delusions and emptiness of modern life seem difficult to overcome, whether under capitalism or communalism as the hunger for rising standards is their mother and common to both.”
  • Lohia advocated socialism in the form of a new civilisation which in the words of Marx could be referred to as “socialist humanism.”

Lohia’s  role in the socialist movement in India

  • He gave a new direction and dimension to the socialist movement of India.
  • He said that India’s ideology is to be understood in the context of its culture, traditions, and history.
  • For the success of the democratic socialist movement in India, it is necessary to put primary emphasis on the removal of the caste system through a systemic reform process.
  • Referring to the caste system he said, “All those who think that with the removal of poverty through a modern economy, these segregations will automatically disappear, make a big mistake.”
  • He often highlighted the irrelevance of capitalism in the economic reconstruction and development of Third World countries.
  • He wanted the state power to be controlled, guided, and framed by people’s power and believed in the ideology of democratic socialism and non-violent methodology as instruments of governance.
  • Impact of Leon Trotsky on Lohia
  • Lohia was deeply influenced by Leon Trotsky’s theory of “permanent revolution”.
  • He preached and practised the concept of “permanent civil disobedience” as a peaceful rebellion against injustice.
  • To him, the essence of social revolution could be achieved through a combination of jail, spade and vote.
  • Impact of Marx on Lohia
  • Although he was in favour of Marx’s theory of dialectical materialism, he was aware of its limitations.
  • He emphasised both the economic factors and human will as important elements of the development of history.
  • He was convinced that the “logic of events” and “logic of will” would govern the path of history.
  • For him, the theory of determinism was not a solution for the tradition-bound Indian society where class distinctions and caste stratifications rule the day.
  • The Marxist theory of class struggle is not an answer for the complex social structures of India.

Controversy associated with Lohia’s Samyukta Socialist Party (SSP)

  • Lohia’s Samyukta Socialist Party (SSP) coined a controversial slogan: “ SamSoPa ne baandhi gaanth, Pichhara pave sau mein saath  (The SSP is determined to get 60 per cent reservation for the backward castes in all the spheres of life)”.
  • A dexterous theorist and practitioner of his version of socialism, Lohia worked doggedly in the Hindi heartland to implement his vision.

As a socialist thinker and activist, Lohia has carved out for himself a unique place in the history of Indian socialist thought and movement. Although there has been a tendency among contemporary researchers not to recognise him as an academic system-builder in the tradition of Kant, Hegel or Comte, his democratic socialist approach to look at ideology as an integrated phenomenon is now being widely accepted throughout the world.

Sharing is caring!
