But he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel; he also made molten images for the Baals. I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.

Sacrifice » Meat » Idols

I know and am convinced in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but to him who thinks anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. For if because of food your brother is hurt, you are no longer walking according to love Do not destroy with your food him for whom Christ died. Therefore do not let what is for you a good thing be spoken of as evil; read more. for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. For he who in this way serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another. Do not tear down the work of God for the sake of food All things indeed are clean, but they are evil for the man who eats and gives offense. It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles. The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.

Now concerning things sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge Knowledge makes arrogant, but love edifies. If anyone supposes that he knows anything, he has not yet known as he ought to know; but if anyone loves God, he is known by Him. read more. Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that there is no such thing as an idol in the world, and that there is no God but one. For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him. However not all men have this knowledge; but some, being accustomed to the idol until now, eat food as if it were sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled. But food will not commend us to God; we are neither the worse if we do not eat, nor the better if we do eat. But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if someone sees you, who have knowledge, dining in an idol's temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be strengthened to eat things sacrificed to idols? For through your knowledge he who is weak is ruined, the brother for whose sake Christ died. And so, by sinning against the brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause my brother to stumble.

Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. I speak as to wise men; you judge what I say. Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ? read more. Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread. Look at the nation Israel; are not those who eat the sacrifices sharers in the altar? What do I mean then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers in demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not stronger than He, are we? All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable All things are lawful, but not all things edify. Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor. Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions for conscience' sake; FOR THE EARTH IS THE LORD'S, AND ALL IT CONTAINS. If one of the unbelievers invites you and you want to go, eat anything that is set before you without asking questions for conscience' sake. But if anyone says to you, "This is meat sacrificed to idols," do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for conscience' sake; I mean not your own conscience, but the other man's; for why is my freedom judged by another's conscience? If I partake with thankfulness, why am I slandered concerning that for which I give thanks? Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God; just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit but the profit of the many, so that they may be saved.

Sacrifice » Whose sacrifice shall be accepted by the lord

"Also the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, To minister to Him, and to love the name of the LORD, To be His servants, every one who keeps from profaning the sabbath And holds fast My covenant; Even those I will bring to My holy mountain And make them joyful in My house of prayer Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be acceptable on My altar; For My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples."

Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate. So, let us go out to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach. For here we do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking the city which is to come. read more. Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name. And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD of the fruit of the ground. Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions And the LORD had regard for Abel and for his offering; but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell. read more. Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? "If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it."

Sacrifice » The reward for sacrificing your children

They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons, And shed innocent blood, The blood of their sons and their daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; And the land was polluted with the blood. Thus they became unclean in their practices, And played the harlot in their deeds. read more. Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against His people And He abhorred His inheritance. Then He gave them into the hand of the nations, And those who hated them ruled over them. Their enemies also oppressed them, And they were subdued under their power. Many times He would deliver them; They, however, were rebellious in their counsel, And so sank down in their iniquity.

and say, 'Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, "Behold I am about to bring a calamity upon this place, at which the ears of everyone that hears of it will tingle. "Because they have forsaken Me and have made this an alien place and have burned sacrifices in it to other gods, that neither they nor their forefathers nor the kings of Judah had ever known, and because they have filled this place with the blood of the innocent and have built the high places of Baal to burn their sons in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal, a thing which I never commanded or spoke of, nor did it ever enter My mind; read more. therefore, behold, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when this place will no longer be called Topheth or the valley of Ben-hinnom, but rather the valley of Slaughter. "I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hand of those who seek their life; and I will give over their carcasses as food for the birds of the sky and the beasts of the earth. "I will also make this city a desolation and an object of hissing; everyone who passes by it will be astonished and hiss because of all its disasters. "I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they will eat one another's flesh in the siege and in the distress with which their enemies and those who seek their life will distress them."' "Then you are to break the jar in the sight of the men who accompany you and say to them, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, "Just so will I break this people and this city, even as one breaks a potter's vessel, which cannot again be repaired; and they will bury in Topheth because there is no other place for burial. "This is how I will treat this place and its inhabitants," declares the LORD, "so as to make this city like Topheth. "The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be defiled like the place Topheth, because of all the houses on whose rooftops they burned sacrifices to all the heavenly host and poured out drink offerings to other gods."'" Then Jeremiah came from Topheth, where the LORD had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of the LORD'S house and said to all the people: "Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, 'Behold, I am about to bring on this city and all its towns the entire calamity that I have declared against it, because they have stiffened their necks so as not to heed My words.'"

"They built the high places of Baal that are in the valley of Ben-hinnom to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to Molech, which I had not commanded them nor had it entered My mind that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin. "Now therefore thus says the LORD God of Israel concerning this city of which you say, 'It is given into the hand of the king of Babylon by sword, by famine and by pestilence.'

"The second is this, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is no other commandment greater than these." "But he who kills an ox is like one who slays a man; He who sacrifices a lamb is like the one who breaks a dog's neck; He who offers a grain offering is like one who offers swine's blood; He who burns incense is like the one who blesses an idol As they have chosen their own ways, And their soul delights in their abominations, read more. So I will choose their punishments And will bring on them what they dread Because I called, but no one answered; I spoke, but they did not listen And they did evil in My sight And chose that in which I did not delight."

Do not rejoice, O Israel, with exultation like the nations! For you have played the harlot, forsaking your God. You have loved harlots' earnings on every threshing floor. Threshing floor and wine press will not feed them, And the new wine will fail them. They will not remain in the LORD'S land, But Ephraim will return to Egypt, And in Assyria they will eat unclean food. read more. They will not pour out drink offerings of wine to the LORD, Their sacrifices will not please Him Their bread will be like mourners' bread; All who eat of it will be defiled, For their bread will be for themselves alone; It will not enter the house of the LORD.

Sacrifice » Jesus Christ being the lamb of God

The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth. And He came and took the book out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. When He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. read more. And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. "You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth." Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing." And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, "To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever."

Bible Verses About Sacrifice

Table of Contents

Leviticus may not be your favorite book in the Bible, but God has devoted an entire book explaining to His people what was expected. In fact, the children of Israel were camped out in the wilderness for about a year as they learned about the sacrifices they were expected to make and the other things they needed to do if they were to please God.

Since the beginning of time, God has required a sacrifice from His people. He asked Adam and Eve for the sacrifice of obedience. Later, when they sinned, He required a physical offering even as He still asked them to be obedient.

But biblical sacrifice did not end in the Old Testament. The New Testament is rife with sacrifice—not only what is expected of God’s people but also the sacrifice God made on humanity’s behalf. Let’s explore a few of those Bible verses about sacrifice:

Bible verses about the sacrifice God made for humanity

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8 ESV).

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you” (John 15:12-14 ESV).

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45 ESV).

He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:2 ESV

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross (Philippians 2:5-8 ESV).

Bible verses about sacrifice expected from God’s people

Bible-verses-about-sacrifice

Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name (Hebrews 13:15 ESV).

And Samuel said, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams (1 Samuel 15:22 ESV).

For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise ( Psalm 51:16-17 ESV).

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect (Romans 12:1-2 ESV).

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ (Colossians 3:23-24 ESV).

Bible verses about sacrifice for others

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God (Hebrews 13:16 ESV).

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others (Philippians 2:4 ESV).

By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:16-18 ESV

We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves (Romans 15:1 ESV).

But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever (1 Timothy 5:8 ESV).

What is a Biblical Sacrifice?

As Christians, we struggle with the concept of biblical sacrifice. We understand that Christ’s death on the cross was the ultimate sacrifice and that we ought to live our lives in a way that emulates His. But when it comes to actual sacrifice, we struggle with what it looks like or what it means for our lives.

Sacrifice is the giving up of something for someone else or for another purpose. Many of us understand or have seen this type of sacrifice played out in our lives, whether it is in a parent-child relationship, or the giving up of something for a friend or person we care about. But before we can sacrifice anything for anyone, we have to understand the biblical meaning of sacrifice.

The History of Biblical Sacrifice

As Christians, we know that the sacrificial system was introduced after sin. A perfect lamb–or another animal–was sacrificed in place of the person who was guilty. This mimicked the perfect sacrifice of Christ dying on behalf of humanity.

The first sacrifice happened off-page. When Adam and Eve sinned, one of the first things they did was try to make clothing for themselves.

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves (Genesis 3:7 NIV).

But God knew they needed something better. He knew fig leaves would not cover them for any length of time, nor would it protect them from the elements of weather. But more importantly, He knew that because the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23), something had to die in their place.

The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them (Genesis 3:21 NIV).

While we don’t have the details of that inaugural sacrifice, I like to think God initiated it. I like to think He killed the first two animals and offered them as a sacrifice in place of Adam and Eve.

He did it because He wanted Adam and Eve to understand that while He was offering them grace by allowing them to live, something had to die because they had transgressed the law of God. They also had to be taught what to do because until that moment there had been no need for anything to die.

There are many stories of sacrifice in the Bible, from the tale of Cain and Abel to that of Abraham and Isaac, to the ultimate sacrifice of an innocent Christ dying for all humanity. The sacrifice Christ made on our behalf is the reason we are allowed to live, and minister, and work. Maybe that’s why I picked up on the subtle theme of sacrifice in the book Collision of Lies.

It’s because the idea of sacrifice is still an intrinsic part of our Christian lives. God wants us to be living sacrifices. A biblical sacrifice is one that pleases God. It is sacrifice that chooses what’s best for the greater good–the advancement of the kingdom and God’s purpose rather than our own. It is life lived in conjunction with God’s will.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Romans 12:1 NIV

Our lives matter to God and we should live as if they do. We should learn to put other people ahead of ourselves while keeping God at the first place in our lives.

Collision of Lies Review

The story started with an argument but what may have appeared as a domestic dispute was actually a symptom of something deeper, more sinister.

The story moved at a good pace and kept you engrossed in learning the details of the case. I did find that when the characters’ conversations were about anything other than the case, they were stilted and unrealistic. It was also difficult to see the lead detective Amara Alvarez as a fully rounded character as she didn’t seem to have a life outside of the cases she worked on. The author tried but I found his efforts stilted at best and forced at worse.

When the case started falling apart, I expected more explanations or at least a sense that things were being wrapped up. Instead, I was left with many unanswered questions that were not addressed in the epilogue.

The reason behind the lies seemed a bit too complex especially for an average reader to understand and was never fully explained. The reader is left with the theory that the police came up with and a brief “oh yes, that was it”, but it never provides the answer from the perspective of the perpetrators.

Know God: There were no faith elements in this book and only one mention of prayer and it was in a “let-this-work-out-okay” kind of way instead of an “I’m-believing-God-for-this-to-happen” way. Yet, upon finishing the book I realized that this was a book about sacrifice. There were several characters who sacrificed themselves for the greater good.

I was reminded of the importance of biblical sacrifice. While we’re not asked to make animal sacrifices anymore, biblical sacrifice may mean giving up something for someone else. Biblical sacrifice may mean choosing to put someone else’s needs above your own. There will come a time in every person’s life when they will need to make a choice. What will you choose?

Know Yourself: When we first met Amara Alvarez, she was a Property Crimes detective who desperately wanted a transfer to the Homicide department. While we never really get the reason for her desire, we see her actively pursuing it by spending time with the Homicide detectives trying to learn more about the ins and outs of the division.

Like Amara, it’s important for us to know what we want and take active steps in pursuing our dreams. Unlike Amara, we need to spend time in the Word and with God trying to figure out his plan and purpose for our lives.

Run your race: What I liked about the character was her determination to walk the path set before her. Even when she knew things would get difficult she resolutely did the task at hand and did what she needed to do.

It was an intriguing story. What happens when everything you know about something is a lie? Do you continue to behave as if you hadn’t been given clues that what you believed was a lie? Or do you pursue the truth at whatever the cost?

Collision of Lies was about sacrifice and about what you would do if someone you loved was in danger or trouble. It was about self-preservation and what people would do when people’s backs were against the wall. It was about selfishness and greed and what people would do to satisfy their own desires.

About Collision of Lies

Collision of Lies

The case was tragic. But it was an accident. Right?

Three years ago, a collision between a fast-moving freight train and a school bus full of kids led to devastation and grief on an unimaginable scale. But a fresh clue leads San Antonio police detective Amara Alvarez to the unlikely conclusion that one of the children may still be alive. If she’s correct, everything law enforcement believes about the accident is a lie.

With time running out, Amara must convince others–and herself–that despite all evidence to the contrary, the boy is alive. And she will do everything in her power to bring him home.

The Importance of Sacrifice to God

Let’s face it, in the relationship between us and God, we’re the more needy ones. We are dependent on Him for everything down to the very air we inhale and our ability to breathe it in…Why do we need to make sacrifices to God? Our sacrifices have nothing to do with who we are and everything to do with who He is. Sacrifice is important to God because of what we mean to Him.

We make sacrifices to remind ourselves that in God’s eyes we’re just dust. But we’re just that He loves. People whom He gave His life for and if He, creator of the universe and everything in it is willing to make a sacrifice on our behalf, why should we begrudge Him the same?

I hope these Bible verses about sacrifice, as well as, a look at biblical sacrifice will help you to truly appreciate the work Christ did for you on the cross.

As touching the Gentiles which believe, we have written and concluded that they observe no such thing, save only that they keep themselves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from strangled, and from fornication. Then Paul took the men, and the next day purifying himself with them entered into the temple, to signify the accomplishment of the days of purification, until that an offering should be offered for every one of them.

What Does the Bible Say About Sacrifice?

The definition of sacrifice is: An act of giving up something valued for the sake of something else regarded as more important and worthy

Stop end dwell in that space for a moment. In every Bible verse about sacrifice that you read here and in scripture revel in the fact that God is telling us that we are to place a greater value in Him and others before ourselves.

God leaves nothing to the imagination when it comes to sacrifice. We are called to live in sacrifice, this will become evident in the scriptures below.

Sacrifice is a blessing, a gift, an honor, and it brings glory to those who receive it as well as those who give it. We know that we are to look to the life of Christ as an example for our own lives. How can one look at the sacrifice Jesus gave on the cross and not see the importance of sacrifice in their own life?

The Importance of Sacrifice in The Bible

Jesus sacrifice on the cross was for the atonement of our sins. He became the living sacrifice for all who would choose to believe in him and receive the gift of eternal life. His sacrifice took on all the condemnation that we deserved.

He gave up His life because He saw all of creation as more worthy than Himself. His love was so great that he offered up himself in our place.

So now we turn to sacrifice within our own lives. What is God calling us to in terms of sacrifice and sacrificial love? How do we bestow sacrifice upon others and what examples can we find in scripture?

Look no further! Below is a compilation of 15 Bible verses on sacrifice ; what it was, what it is and how we are called to it.

Bible Verses About Sacrifice for Others

In the Bible, there are many verses about sacrifice . This speaks to the importance of sacrifice in Christianity. One of the most famous examples of sacrifice in the Bible is when Jesus died on the cross for our sins .

He showed us that it is possible to love others more than ourselves. In order to follow Jesus’ example, we must be willing to make sacrifices for others. This may mean putting their needs before our own or doing something that is difficult or unpopular. When we willingly make these kinds of sacrifices, we show God how much we love Him and others.

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” Psalm 51:17

This Psalm leans into the acknowledgment that God is longing for our hearts, whether whole or broken for He is the one who can repair and sustain them. In the Old Testament there was no amount of blood that could be shed on the alter to pay for the sins that were premeditated and hateful. Offering one’s own heart, no matter what shape it is in delights the Lord, because in that moment He knows we have chosen Him.

“To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the  Lord than sacrifice.” Proverbs 21:3

God knew that He would send Jesus to be the one true sacrifice. What He truly longed for from his people was obedience in what He had called them to.

“But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” Matthew 9:13

This is a command to “go and learn”. Jesus wanted the people to understand that He wanted his people to live a certain way; to love others. This was valued over rituals, but many were stuck in what they were “doing” instead of how they were “loving”.

“Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.” Matthew 19:21

Jesus had just finished listing a portion of the 10 commandments to the young man in this passage and the young man says, “I have done all of these things”, Jesus then tell him to sell his possessions and give to the poor.

If you keep reading you see Jesus talking to his disciples and He says, this is the hardest thing for the rich to do and that is why it is hard for them to enter Heaven.

Jesus knows that we have a hard time sacrificing our “things” and yet that is what he calls us to at times. He wants to know that we fully believe that He is all we need and that He will provide.

“   For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

Jesus came to be a living sacrifice for us. Not only did he come to die on the cross for our salvation, but He came to serve. Jesus is not asking us to sacrifice anything that He in his humanness didn’t sacrifice as well. He lived His life in the same way that He is calling us to live, a life of service.

“For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.” Luke 9:24

When we give our lives to Christ, we are swapping a selfish, greedy life in the short term for a magnificent life of abundant love, mercy, and honor for all of eternity.

” For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

When we talk about Jesus being that living sacrifice, this verse sums it all up. God loves us all so much that He sent Jesus not only to the world but to the cross so that he could be the atoning sacrifice for all of us. God sent his son away and was separated from Him for 33 years, he watched Him suffer in agony for us.

“ And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.”  Acts 2:44-45

This scripture captures followers of Jesus sacrificing for the good of others. This fellowship of believers is the example of how we as a people and a church should be living out our lives for Christ. What a beautiful picture of the hands and feet of Jesus at work.

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” Romans 12:1

“Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice”, what does this even mean? Jesus came as a living sacrifice. He came to serve. This is a call to believers to live like Jesus, and serve like Jesus.

“And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.” Ephesians 5:2

To love is to sacrifice. When the word love is taken and used as an action, those actions are then offerings and sacrifice to God. When you love your neighbor, your love is a sacrifice. When you pay for groceries for a neighbor who can’t, your love is an offering. Use your abilities to love people to the Kingdom. Jesus loved people to the father. He sacrificed his own needs to love those around him first. He is calling us to do the same.

“So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.” Hebrews 9:28

Christ is sacrifice. If you need a definition of the word look no further than this scripture. Christ came and accepted the role of sacrifice for our sins, and he will come again to bring salvation to those still here, waiting for salvation.

“Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 2:5

Peter’s audience would have understood the imagery of being a spiritual house, a temple. The temple was where sacrifices were made to the Lord. The temple was where the people would go to be with God. Peter is now addressing the fact that each person was being built up to be where sacrifice was made and where God would dwell. The Holy Spirit living within the body of a believer and the sacrifices offered, being those that everyone would provide in terms of action, love and honor.

“Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” 1 John 3:16

We are called as Jesus did to lay down our lives. To use our life in service to others. This can be literal, if there is a need for saving the life of another but this is also in reference to the life that we live. Are you living selfishly, for the benefit of yourself at the cost of others or are you living out the meaning of a sacrificial life by giving up something of value for the sake of something more important than yourself?

Bible Verses About Sacrifice and Love

There are so many Bible verses about sacrifice and love . It’s amazing how God’s word speaks to us in different ways at different times in our lives. These verses remind us that even though sacrifice can be hard, it’s always worth it in the end. They also remind us of the never-ending love God has for us. No matter what we do, He will always love us. These verses are a great reminder of how we should love others as well.

“And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore.” Ruth 2:11

Ruth gives us a beautiful example of sacrifice when she leaves all that she has ever known to love and take care of her mother-in-law who has lost her husband and her sons. Boaz takes notice of Ruth’s sacrificial heart; she gave up so much to love her mother-in-law well.

“   Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.”  Proverbs 3:3-4

This is such a gentle reminder of what it takes to be a sacrificial person and to love others well. If we walk in kindness and truth, love and sacrifice are sure to follow.

“And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” Luke 6:31

As humans we all want to be loved and to be tried kindly and with fairness. Luke does a good job of saying, if you know that you want to be treated kindly and fair then go out and do the same for others. If you do not treat others as you would like to be treated, then what example are you setting?

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13

If you have grown up in the church than this verse is no surprise to you. Jesus is reiterating to his followers that he was showing the greatest love that he could by sacrificing himself on the cross so that they all could live.

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

The verse is really speaking to us as believers that “while we were still sinners”, this tells us that we are not called to simply serve and love those who we feel deserve it. We are called to love and sacrifice for ALL.

“And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.”  1 Corinthians 13:3

If one is living a life of service, sacrifice and love but is doing so for the recognition of others, really, they have gained nothing. The Lord knows our hearts. What is it to give up all you have so that others may praise your name?

“ Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

To love another person is love as the Bible lays out for us. When we are loving according to the scripture above there is no room for self-centeredness, pride, evil, or any other attitude. Love is pure and blameless when done right.

“Let all your things be done with charity.” 1 Corinthians 16:14

In the previous scripture the definition of love was laid out. Now we, as believers are called to do everything in love. Stop for a moment and think about all the things that you do not in love. How can those moments be changed to include the love of Christ?

“   Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;   That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”  Ephesians 5:25-27

What a call to husbands. Love your wives as Christ loved the church. Husbands are being called to be servant leaders. To sacrifice for their bride, showing her worth above their own. Christ loved the church in a way that took away all her sins, He washed the church and made it blameless with His death on the cross.

“ Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:” Philippians 3:8-9

Again, we see here that sacrificing all things to know Christ is gain.

“For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.” Hebrews 10:34

Loving and being self-sacrificing can come in many shapes and sizes but to suffer for the sake of others is hard for many of us to understand. The true understanding and belief that their suffering was worth the cost was a testament to their faith in the Lord.

Prison in Bible times often meant disease, humiliation, and shame. Even if a trial was granted that didn’t mean soon. The followers of Jesus were suffering greatly but they knew that what God had in store for them was better and that eternal life with Christ could never be confiscated.

“Let brotherly love continue.” Hebrews 13:1

Hospitality in scripture often meant providing lodging and food to trustworthy travelers. How often do we go out of our way to provide for those we don’t know? When do we sacrifice for others. We have to remember that sacrifice is different than giving. Sacrificing is to give up something of great value or worth, not simply something we don’t need or care about.

“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” 1 John 3:18

To love is to sacrifice. To sacrifice is to give something of great value. To sacrifice is to give something of value up in order for another to benefit from it. Use your body as a sacrifice for the Lord. Go out amongst the people and be the hands and feet of Jesus. He was the perfect example of how we can live out a sacrificial life.

“   Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.” 1 John 4:7-9

One of our greatest calls is to go out and be disciples for Christ. We cannot be disciples and show Jesus if we do not love. Christ is the very definition of love, therefore if Christ is in us as we claim then so too is love.

“Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” 1 John 4:10

Our love, no matter how strong was never given in perfection. Jesus is perfect, Jesus is love and God sent this perfect love in human form of Jesus to be crucified on the cross; the greatest sacrifice, so that we may live in Him.

True love is the gift of Jesus sacrifice for the world on that wooden cross. Now, because we are made new in Him, we too can go and love through sacrifice for those around us. The Bible is laced with scripture, stories, examples, and definitions of sacrifice. As believers we are privileged to be invited to live a life of sacrifice for the advancement of the Kingdom and joy of the Lord.

We will never be able to live a perfectly sacrificial life, but Jesus did.

We will never understand the full weight of Jesus sacrifice on the cross, but God does.

We will never sacrifice perfectly, but God doesn’t ask us to.

He asks us to sacrifice from a place of love. He tells us that when we sacrifice it is pleasing to Him when our hearts are in the right place. The Lord has taken the time as he breathed life into scripture to teach us what sacrifice is, why it is important and how we can live it out.

I pray that as you walk away from this article today that you do so with a new understanding. An outlook on sacrifice that maybe was missing before. Mostly I pray that you feel encouraged to your own life sacrificially for the Lord. That when the moments are hard, and you don’t want to love sacrificially that you are reminded in that moment that your sacrifice is worship to the Lord. You were made for this!

Bible Verses About Sacrifice For Others

1 john 3:16.

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.”

This verse emphasizes the sacrificial love of Jesus, who willingly gave up his life for us. As followers of Christ, we are called to imitate his example by sacrificing ourselves for the well-being of others. It challenges us to put the needs of others above our own and to be willing to give up our time, resources, and even our lives for the sake of love.

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

Jesus speaks these words to his disciples, explaining that the ultimate act of love is to lay down one’s life for their friends. This verse reminds us of the sacrificial nature of true friendship and the depth of love that Jesus has for us. It encourages us to cherish and value our relationships, being willing to sacrifice our own comfort and desires for the sake of those we care about.

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus shares these words with his disciples, teaching them about the purpose of his ministry and mission. He emphasizes that his purpose is not to be served, but to serve others and give his life as a ransom. This verse highlights the sacrificial nature of Jesus’ coming and reminds us that we are called to follow his example by serving others selflessly and sacrificially.

Romans 12:1

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”

Paul encourages the believers in Rome to offer their bodies as living sacrifices to God. This verse reminds us that true worship is not just about external actions but about offering our entire selves to God sacrificially. It calls us to surrender our own desires, plans, and ambitions to follow God’s will and to live in a way that is pleasing and honoring to him.

Philippians 2:3-4

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

Paul urges the Philippians to live in humility, valuing others above themselves and being attentive to their needs. This verse challenges us to sacrifice our own desires and ambitions, choosing to prioritize the needs and interests of others. It calls us to a selfless and sacrificial love that seeks the well-being of others and reflects the character of Christ.

Galatians 2:20

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Paul expresses his identification with Jesus’ sacrificial death and the transformative power it has had in his life. This verse reflects the idea of dying to self and allowing Christ to live through us. It challenges us to sacrificially surrender our own desires and ambitions, allowing Christ to shape and direct our lives according to his will.

Hebrews 13:16

“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”

The writer of Hebrews encourages believers to not only do good but to also share with others sacrificially. This verse reminds us that our acts of service and generosity are pleasing to God when they involve sacrifice. It calls us to give sacrificially of our time, resources, and talents, seeking to bless and uplift others for the glory of God.

Isaiah 58:7

“Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?”

This verse challenges us to sacrificially care for the vulnerable and needy in our midst. It reminds us that true sacrifice involves meeting the practical needs of others, such as providing food, shelter, and clothing. It calls us to extend our love and care beyond ourselves, demonstrating empathy and compassion to those who are in need.

“In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.”

Jesus shares these words with the crowds following him, explaining the cost of discipleship. This verse highlights that following Jesus requires sacrificing everything we have and not holding onto worldly possessions or attachments. It challenges us to examine our priorities and to willingly give up anything that hinders our wholehearted devotion to Christ.

Matthew 6:3-4

“But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Jesus teaches his disciples about giving to the needy and emphasizes the importance of doing so in secret. This verse highlights the sacrificial nature of giving, encouraging us to give without seeking recognition or praise from others. It reminds us that our sacrificial acts of kindness and generosity are seen and honored by God, who rewards us accordingly.

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Jesus teaches his disciples about the principle of giving and receiving. This verse emphasizes that when we sacrificially give, we will also receive abundantly in return. It challenges us to be generous and sacrificial in our giving, trusting that God will multiply and bless what we have given with even greater abundance.

Mark 12:41-44

“Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.'”

This narrative highlights the sacrificial giving of a poor widow who gave her last two coins to God. Jesus acknowledges her sacrificial act and contrasts it with the giving of others who gave out of their abundance. It challenges us to evaluate our motives and to sacrificially give from what we have, regardless of the amount. It teaches us that it is not the size of the gift that matters, but the heart behind the giving.

“In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

Paul emphasizes the joy and blessing that comes from sacrificial giving. He reminds us of Jesus’ words that it is more blessed to give than to receive. This verse challenges us to actively seek ways to help the weak and vulnerable, sacrificially using our resources and abilities to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

Proverbs 19:17

“Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.”

This verse highlights that when we sacrificially show kindness to the poor, we are lending to the Lord. It reminds us that our acts of compassion and generosity towards those in need are not in vain but are seen and valued by God. It assures us that God will reward us for our sacrificial acts of kindness and concern for the less fortunate.

Matthew 25:35-40

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

Jesus shares this parable, illustrating the importance of sacrificially caring for those in need. He emphasizes that when we sacrificially help the hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, sick, or imprisoned, we are serving him. This passage challenges us to see the face of Christ in those whom we encounter and to sacrificially extend our love and care to them.

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

James highlights the importance of sacrificially caring for orphans and widows in their distress. He emphasizes that this is a genuine and acceptable form of worship in the eyes of God. This verse challenges us to have a heart of compassion for those who are vulnerable and marginalized, sacrificially reaching out to meet their needs and alleviate their suffering.

Matthew 5:42

“Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.”

Jesus teaches his followers about radical generosity and sacrificial giving. He instructs them to give freely to those who ask, without withholding or turning away. This verse challenges us to examine our own attitude towards giving and to sacrificially offer our resources and assistance to those in need, trusting in God’s provision and abundance.

2 Corinthians 8:9

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.”

Paul reminds the Corinthians of the sacrificial love and grace of Jesus, who willingly became poor for their sake. This verse challenges us to consider the sacrificial nature of Jesus’ incarnation, ministry, and death on the cross. It calls us to sacrificially give and share with others, being willing to become “poor” in order to bless and enrich the lives of those around us.

1 Timothy 6:17-19

“Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.”

Paul exhorts those who are wealthy not to place their hope in their riches but in God. He encourages them to be generous, willing to share, and to be rich in good deeds. This passage challenges us to use our resources and wealth wisely and sacrificially, investing in eternal treasures by making a positive impact in the lives of others.

“John answered, ‘Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.’

John the Baptist speaks these words to the crowds, urging them to sacrificially share what they have with those in need. This verse emphasizes the importance of sacrificial generosity and challenges us to be attentive to the needs of others, willingly sharing our resources and possessions for the well-being of those who lack.

Matthew 19:21

“Jesus answered, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’

Jesus responds to a rich young man who asks him what he must do to have eternal life. This verse illustrates the deep sacrifice that is required of discipleship. It challenges us to evaluate the hold that worldly possessions and wealth have on our hearts, being willing to part with them in order to follow Jesus wholeheartedly and sacrificially serve others.

Proverbs 11:25

“A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

This proverb highlights the reciprocal nature of sacrificial giving. It emphasizes that a generous person will experience prosperity and refreshment in return. This verse challenges us to be sacrificially generous, trusting that as we refresh and bless others, we will also be refreshed and blessed by God in various ways.

Luke 12:33-34

“Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Jesus instructs his disciples to sell their possessions and give to the poor, emphasizing the eternal value of sacrificial generosity. This verse challenges us to assess our priorities and attachments, recognizing that our true treasure is found in heaven. It invites us to sacrificially use our resources and possessions for the advancement of God’s kingdom and the well-being of those in need.

Through these Bible verses, we are reminded of the sacrificial love and generosity of our Lord Jesus Christ. He laid down his life for us, and as his disciples, we are called to live sacrificially for others as well. Sacrifice involves giving up our own desires, ambitions, and resources in order to serve and bless those around us.

It requires selflessness, humility, and a heart that prioritizes the needs of others. When we sacrificially give, whether it is our time, talents, or resources, we reflect the character of Christ and demonstrate genuine love for our brothers and sisters. May these verses inspire and challenge us to live lives of sacrificial love and service for the glory of God and the benefit of others.

What Does The Bible Say About Sacrifice For Others?

In the Bible, we find numerous examples of sacrifice for others. The concept of sacrifice is deeply rooted in the teachings and principles of the Scriptures. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, we see the importance of selflessness and putting the well-being of others before our own.

One of the most notable examples of sacrifice is found in the person of Jesus Christ. He laid down His life on the cross as the ultimate act of sacrifice for the salvation of all humanity. Jesus Himself said in Mark 10:45, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” This verse emphasizes the purpose of Jesus’ sacrifice, which was to serve and save others, despite the immense personal cost.

Throughout the Bible, we also encounter stories of individuals who were willing to make sacrifices for the sake of others. Abraham, for instance, was willing to sacrifice his only son Isaac in obedience to God’s command. Although God did not ultimately require the life of Isaac, this story demonstrates the obedience and faith of Abraham in his willingness to offer up his beloved child.

In addition, countless passages throughout the Bible exhort us to sacrifice for the well-being and benefit of others. Philippians 2:4 encourages us to “look not only to our own interests, but also to the interests of others.” This verse reminds us to have a selfless mindset and to prioritize the needs and concerns of others.

Furthermore, the Bible teaches us that sacrificial love is the epitome of Christian living. In John 15:13, Jesus declares, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” This verse emphasizes the significance of sacrificial love in relationships with one another. As followers of Christ, we are called to emulate His example of self-sacrifice and love.

The Bible also reminds us that our sacrifices and acts of service for others should be done with a pure heart and without seeking recognition or reward. As stated in Matthew 6:3-4, “But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Our sacrifice should be driven by a desire to honor God and bless others, rather than seeking personal gain or approval from others.

In conclusion, the Bible is clear in its teachings about sacrifice for others. From the example of Jesus to the instructions and exhortations we find throughout the Scriptures, we are called to lay down our lives, our comforts, and our desires for the sake of serving and loving others. Sacrifice is not only an act of obedience but also a testament to the selfless nature of God’s love. May we strive to imitate Christ’s sacrificial love and be willing to make sacrifices for others, knowing that our true reward comes from our Heavenly Father.

Genesis 22:1-19 English Standard Version

The sacrifice of isaac.

22  After these things ( A ) God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2  He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to ( B ) the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” 3  So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4  On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. 5  Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy [ a ] will go over there and worship and come again to you.” 6  And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and ( C ) laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. 7  And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” 8  Abraham said, ( D ) “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.

9  When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and ( E ) laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10  Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11  But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12  He said, ( F ) “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for ( G ) now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” 13  And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14  So Abraham called the name of that place, ( H ) “The Lord will provide”; [ b ] as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” [ c ]

15  And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven 16  and said, ( I ) “By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord , because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17  I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring ( J ) as the stars of heaven and ( K ) as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess ( L ) the gate of his [ d ] enemies, 18  and ( M ) in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, ( N ) because you have obeyed my voice.” 19  So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to ( O ) Beersheba. And Abraham lived at ( P ) Beersheba.

Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 10 Bible Verses About Sacrifice — and Jesus' Love

"Sacrifice" is a word that comes to mind when we think about the truths and realities embedded in the gospel. From Romans 12:1 to Hebrews 9:28 there are a plethora of Bible verses about sacrifice that explain why Jesus died for our sins and how we should live out selfless love in our own lives.

READ ALSO: JESUS DIED FOR US: 10 POWERFUL BIBLE VERSES ABOUT SALVATION

Considering the importance of these realities, we decided to put together a powerful list of Bible verses about sacrifice. So, let's explore:

Hebrews 9:28 (NIV)

"So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him."

Hebrews 9:28 dives into the core of the gospel: that Jesus died for our sins , and that he will one day return a second time. When we think about his gift of selfless love, we have much to learn in our own lives.

Mark 10:45 (NIV)

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

One central element of sacrifice and selfless love is service. Mark 10:45 (NIV) speaks of Jesus coming to Earth to serve mankind. It's a powerful reminder not only that Jesus died for our sins, but that we, too, are called to love and help others.

Ephesians 5:2 (NIV)

"And walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God."

Ephesians 5:2 is yet another reminder of Jesus' selfless love. Christ died for our sins and loved us enough to sacrifice his life for humankind. We, too, can take a lesson from this as we prepare to care for others with a truly selfless love.

Romans 5:8 (NIV)

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Romans 5:8 obviously comes before Romans 12:1, but it speaks just as powerfully to the transformational power of Christ's death on the cross. Love ushers with it care and sacrifice — something Jesus does for us all.

Psalm 40:6 (NIV)

"Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—but my ears you have opened—burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require."

This Psalm is an important reminder that God has opened our ears and our hearts. Through Christ's sacrifice, we are reconciled to the Lord. Many times, we assume it is repetitious action that God wants, when in reality it is obedience and love.

Romans 12:1 (NIV)

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship."

Romans 12:1 is one of the Bible verses about sacrifice that is truly worth noting. But rather than focusing on the fact that Jesus died for our sins, it instead speaks of selfless love on our part. We are called to offer our bodies "as a living sacrifice." This is a powerful call to us all.

Proverbs 21:3 (NIV)

"To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice."

Another verse that speaks to God's call that we die to ourselves and do what's right can be found in Proverbs 21:3. This is one of the Bible verses about sacrifice that reminds us to turn to God and do what's right by His standards and not our own.

Luke 9:23 (NIV)

"Then he said to them all: 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.'"

Hebrews 13:16 (NIV)

"And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased."

We already know that verses like Romans 12:1 call us to personal sacrifice . But there are other scriptures like Hebrews 13:16 that call us to "go good and to share with others." We are told that this sort of sacrifice pleases the Lord.

1 John 4:10  (NIV)

"This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins."

1 John 4:10 reminds us that Jesus died for our sins and that God loved us so much that He sent Christ for us. This is one of the Bible verses about sacrifice worth committing to memory.

That wraps our list of Bible verses about sacrifice. Want to know more about Jesus' love for humanity? Go here, and be sure to also become a Pure Flix member for thousands of faith and family-friendly movies and TV shows. Grab your free trial today !

However, Good Friday is also an important day to reflect on. It's a more somber event as it commemorates the day Jesus died on the cross. There is a heavy weight felt from remembering how Jesus was arrested and brutally crucified to take on the punishment for sin that we deserved. He didn't deserve any of it but loved us enough to do it. There are many Good Friday verses in the Bible that refer to this day of crucifixion and all that Christ had to go through.

sacrifice quotes bible

By Esau McCaulley

Contributing Opinion Writer

The presumptive Republican nominee for president of the United States, who weeks ago started selling shoes , is now peddling Bibles. During Holy Week.

What’s special about this Bible? So many things. For example, according to a promotional website, it’s the only Bible endorsed by Donald Trump. It’s also the only one endorsed by the country singer Lee Greenwood. Admittedly, the translation isn’t distinctive — it’s your standard King James Version — but the features are unique. This Bible includes the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, the Pledge of Allegiance and part of the lyrics of Mr. Greenwood’s song “God Bless the USA.” Perhaps most striking, the cover of the Bible does not include a cross or any symbol of the Christian tradition; instead, it is emblazoned with the American flag.

While part of me wants to laugh at the absurdity of it — and marvel at the sheer audacity — I find the messaging unsettling and deeply wrong. This God Bless the USA Bible, as it’s officially named, focuses on God’s blessing of one particular people. That is both its danger and, no doubt for some, its appeal.

Whether this Bible is an example of Christian nationalism I will leave to others. It is at least an example of Christian syncretism, a linking of certain myths about American exceptionalism and the Christian faith. This is the American church’s consistent folly: thinking that we are the protagonists in a story that began long before us and whose main character is in fact the Almighty.

Holy Week is the most sacred portion of the Christian calendar, a time when the church recounts the central events of our faith’s narrative, climaxing in the death and resurrection of Jesus. That story, unlike the parochial God Bless the USA Bible, does not belong to any culture.

Holy Week is celebrated on every continent and in too many languages to number. Some of the immigrants Mr. Trump declared were “ poisoning the blood” of America will probably shout “Christ is risen!” this Easter. Many of them come from the largely Christian regions of Latin America and the Caribbean. They may have entered the country with Bibles in their native tongues nestled securely among their other belongings.

One of the beauties of the Christian faith is that it leaps over the lines dividing countries, leading the faithful to call fellow believers from very different cultures brothers and sisters. Most of the members of this international community consist of the poor living in Africa, Asia and Latin America. There are more Spanish-speaking Christians than English- speaking ones .

If there are central messages that emerge from the variety of services that take place during Holy Week, for many Christians they are the setting aside of power to serve, the supremacy of love, the offer of divine forgiveness and the vulnerability of a crucified God.

This is not the stuff of moneymaking schemes or American presidential campaigns.

It was Pontius Pilate , standing in as the representative of the Roman Empire, who sentenced Jesus to death. The Easter story reminds believers that empires are more than willing to sacrifice the innocent if it allows rulers to stay in power. The church sees Christ’s resurrection as liberating the believer from the power of sin. The story challenges imperial modes of thinking, supplanting the endless pursuit of power with the primacy of love and service.

Easter, using the language of St. Augustine, represents the victory of the City of God over the City of Man. It declares the limits of the moral reasoning of nation-states and has fortified Christians who’ve resisted evil regimes such as fascists in South America, Nazis in Germany, apartheid in South Africa and segregation in the United States.

For any politician to suppose that a nation’s founding documents and a country music song can stand side by side with biblical texts fails at a theological and a moral level. I can’t imagine people in other countries going for anything like it. It is hard to picture a modern “God Bless England” Bible with elements of British common law appended to Christianity’s most sacred texts.

I am glad for the freedoms that we share as Americans. But the idea of a Bible explicitly made for one nation displays a misunderstanding of the story the Bible attempts to tell. The Christian narrative culminates in the creation of the Kingdom (and family) of God, a transnational community united by faith and mutual love.

Roman Catholics , Anglicans and Orthodox Christians, who together claim around 1.5 billion members, describe the Bible as a final authority in matters of faith. Evangelicals, who have overwhelmingly supported Mr. Trump over the course of three election cycles, are known for their focus on Scripture, too. None of these traditions cite or refer to any American political documents in their doctrinal statements — and for good reason.

This Bible may be unique in its form, but the agenda it pursues has recurred throughout history. Christianity is often either co-opted or suppressed; it is rarely given the space to be itself. African American Christians have long struggled to disentangle biblical texts from their misuse in the United States. There is a reason that the abolitionist Frederick Douglass said that between the Christianity of this land (America) and the Christianity of Christ, he recognized the “widest possible difference.”

And while Christianity was used to give theological cover to North American race-based chattel slavery, it was violently attacked in places like El Salvador and Uganda, when leaders including the archbishops Oscar Romero and Janani Luwum spoke out against political corruption.

The work of the church is to remain constantly vigilant to maintain its independence and the credibility of its witness. In the case of this particular Bible, discerning what is happening is not difficult. Christians are being played. Rather than being an appropriate time to debut a patriotic Bible, Easter season is an opportune moment for the church to recover the testimony of the supremacy of the cross over any flag, especially one on the cover of a Bible.
