Scholarship Overview

Are you a college-bound high school senior with a love for the written or spoken word? If so, consider applying for the U.S. Creative Writing Awards Scholarship! The scholarship is open to college-bound high school seniors who create and submit an original piece of written fiction, drama, poetry, a memoir/personal essay, or a spoken word piece. Penguin Random House, a multinational polishing company, funds the program. They focus on encouraging the next generation of authors and promoting diverse stories. Thus, since 1993, this program has empowered and celebrated young writers each year with more than $2.8 million awarded in scholarships. Each year, five recipients (one winner per category) earn up to $10,000 to go towards their college expenses. Scholarships and Awards in Creative Writing

Thanks to the generosity of various donors, there are a number of awards—available at different stages of a student writer’s career at UNC—designed to make possible continued study at the University and in the Creative Writing Program, and also to reward excellent work in fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction by undergraduate students.

The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship

This unprecedented program for student writers—which began in 2002 and is funded at roughly the same level as the University’s prestigious Morehead Scholarship—provides a full scholarship to one incoming student each year for four years including summer research stipends. The scholarship is not limited to fiction writers: applications are welcomed from student poets, playwrights, fiction writers, essayists and journalists across the country, and each Wolfe Scholar will be a young writer who shows extraordinary promise. The scholarship was endowed by Frank Borden Hanes Sr., class of 1942, to honor Wolfe, class of 1920—who as a UNC student edited  The Tar Heel  and wrote and starred in “The Return of Buck Gavin” (one of the first productions of Playmakers Repertory Company), later remembering Chapel Hill fondly in his classic 1929 novel  Look Homeward, Angel —and to support the creative writing program. Students must apply for this scholarship during their senior year of high school. The Wanda Chappell Scholarship

Juniors and seniors are eligible for this award, designed for a student who is an English major and a Creative Writing minor, who qualifies for financial aid from the University, and who demonstrates a serious interest in the publishing world. This scholarship program was initially funded by Random House, in memory of Wanda Chappell ‘81.

The Charles and Rita Collins Scholarship

This is a needs-based award—made possible by Charles D. Collins, MD of Rockingham, N.C.—meant to assist students who are Creative Writing minors.

Currently, there are four literary prizes for seniors at Carolina: the Robert B. House Memorial Prize in Poetry; the Louis D. Rubin, Jr., Prize in Fiction; the Max Steele Award in Fiction; and the Ann Williams Burrus/Academy of American Poets Prize, administered by the AAP in New York.

There are two prizes for juniors: the Blanche Armfield Prize for Poetry, and the George B. Wynne Award for Fiction.

Other annual prizes, each of which comes with a cash award, include: the Bland Simpson Prize in Creative Non-Fiction, awarded to one undergraduate for outstanding literary essays and belles-lettres; the Mini-Max Short-Short Fiction Award, founded by former Creative Writing Program Director Max Steele, a practicioner and proponent of very short fiction, and awarded for complete short stories of no more than 750 words; and the Suzanne Bolch Award, founded by Ben and Ann Bolch in honor of their daughter, filmmaker/producer Suzanne Bolch, which provides summer support to a creative writing minor who seeks to develop an original, independent project designed to stimulate and expand the writer’s imagination and artistic vision.

George Watt Prize

This annual essay competition honors George Watt, a writer and lifelong activist central to the creation of ALBA. Students from anywhere in the world are invited to submit an essay or thesis chapter about any aspect of the Spanish Civil War, fascism in 1920s and 1930s, or the international volunteers who fought in support of the Spanish Republic from 1936 to 1938. The George Watt Prize is awarded in three categories: graduate, undergraduate, and pre-collegiate.

What are writing scholarships?

Writing scholarships are financial awards given to students based primarily on written work, though other factors are usually taken into consideration as well. Most writing scholarships involve a prompt or series of prompts to which applicants must respond. Some writing scholarships — especially those that award large amounts of money — require applicants to submit past writing samples, or even a full portfolio.

The good news is that, with so many writing scholarships to choose from, you don’t have to apply for any that are “out of your league.” Indeed, though most students have heard of writing scholarships, you may not realize just how many different varieties there are! Here are five of the most common types of writing scholarships, all of which you can find in this directory.

1. Personal essay scholarships

Personal essay scholarships involve writing on a topic related to your own experience. You’ll often see personal essay prompts like, “How have your experiences influenced your choice of major?” and “What are your career aspirations and how do you plan to achieve them?” Other prompts may ask you to write about a role model, a life-changing event, an aspect of your identity, etc. Suggested length is usually about 500-1,000 words, but varies depending on the level of detail requested and how many essay questions are provided.

Just about every scholarship these days has a personal essay component of some kind. This is because personal essay responses both demonstrate writing skills and give the judges a clear sense of each applicant’s goals. No one wants to throw away money on an aimless student — so if you’re applying for a personal essay scholarship, make sure to convey both your writing abilities and your ambitions in your work!

2. Critical essay scholarships

Critical essay scholarships are more in line with what students might consider  “academic” essays. The prompts typically ask applicants to analyze works of literature. However, unlike open-ended English class essays, most critical essay scholarships provide a very specific prompt (e.g. “Examine The Great Gatsby in the context of its World War II-era revival”).

Critical essay scholarships can also involve non-literary subject matter. Some may ask applicants to evaluate a historical event or figure; others may ask them to defend their stance on a political or legal issue. Though the line between critical and personal essays can sometimes blur, for the purposes of this directory, we define critical essays as those that use evidence from an external source to prove a point.

3. Short fiction scholarships

Short fiction scholarships include scholarships for short stories, one-act plays, poetry, and any other form of fiction that isn’t a novel or full-length script. Short fiction scholarships tend to be easier to find than long-form fiction scholarships, since most judging panels don’t have time to read more than a few thousand words per entry. Therefore, if you write fiction and you’re hoping to nab yourself a scholarship, this category is the way to go! (That said, if you’re a hardline novelist, some places will accept a sample chapter or two as short fiction entries.)

4. Journalism scholarships

Journalism scholarships are for students interested in pursuing a career in news, magazine, and/or online journalism. These scholarship applications almost always ask for writing samples to show the candidate’s interest. Depending on the organization, they may prefer topical news reports, informative articles, thinkpieces, or a mix. Some journalism scholarships provide a prompt and ask applicants to write a new article, but the focus is usually on samples. Speaking of which…

5. Portfolio scholarships 

Portfolio scholarships are the most rigorous kind of writing scholarship, requiring a substantial body of work from each applicant — usually 5-10 pieces of writing, if not more. The upside is that awards for portfolio scholarships tend to be pretty sizable, and may even cover your entire tuition!

If you decide to apply to a portfolio scholarship, make sure you have several strong pieces of work in your oeuvre, and consider writing a few new pieces as well. What you shouldn’t do is rush through a dozen new pieces to throw together as a portfolio. If you don’t have samples at the ready from previous assignments or projects, you’ll be better off applying to a less intensive writing scholarship.

Why apply to writing scholarships?

Applying to writing scholarships is a huge undertaking, especially if you’re pursuing multiple scholarships at once. It can sometimes feel like the effort isn’t worth it, or that you have little chance of actually winning any awards. But in truth, submitting to writing scholarships is one of the best investments you can make in your education, your creative writing skills, and your professional life.

Scholarships for larger amounts do attract more applicants, but that doesn’t mean they’re impossible to land — only that you have to work a little harder to stand out. And you can definitely sway the odds in your favor by applying to lots of small scholarships ($500 or less) for which you’ll have fewer competitors. Remember that every little bit helps! For example, if you plan on taking out student loans, even a $500 scholarship could save you much more in interest down the line.

Another compelling reason to apply to writing scholarships is that oftentimes, you’ve already done the work, or the work required is minimal. For scholarships that require writing samples, you’ll simply submit what you’ve already written in the past — and even for scholarships with specific prompts, you rarely have to write more than a couple of pages. If you were seriously committed, you could apply to a scholarship every day, spending a single concentrated evening on each application.

Jumping off that thought, as English majors love to say: the more writing scholarships you apply for, the better a writer you’ll become. Writing tons of scholarship essays will make you a much more creative and efficient writer. Not only will this help with your personal writing projects, but it will also be invaluable to your education and even your career! Writing is a crucial skill for every major — you’ll always have to write papers and emails to professors, after all — and even if you don’t plan to pursue a writing-based job, you'll still need writing skills to polish your résumé.

Scholarships may also be awarded to children of members in good standing who are full-time law enforcement officers or full-time firefighters who, while in the lawful performance of their duties, died as a result of criminal violence directed at them. Applications must be filed within two years of the date of death of the member. The term "children" shall include natural or adopted children of the deceased member who were born within nine months after the member died or, in the case of adoption, were adopted by the member before he suffered the fatal injury, or in the case of a member in the military, before he suffered the permanently and totally disabling injury. Benefits for which eligible children qualify shall be limited to tuition only, up to a maximum of $25,000 per year, but not room, board, books, fees, transportation, dues, computers or supplies. Tuition shall first be reduced by the amount of any scholarships or other grants to which the child shall be entitled. All scholarships are governed by established rules of the Educational Trust Fund. Davidson College offers a $35,000 scholarship to young writers who demonstrate an exceptional passion for writing. It is an annual scholarship awarded to one first-year student. The scholarship can be renewed every year as long as the scholarship recipients maintain good grade point averages.

2. University of Michigan-Dearborn Writing Awards

• Awarded by: Outdoor Writers Association of America
• Deadline: May 2022

The University of Michigan-Dearborn offers $7,500 in scholarships to students enlisted in undergraduate degree programs. The awards are granted in the Poetry, Bill Linn Fiction Prize, Researched Writing, Creative Nonfiction, Writing Through Image and Sound, Writing in the Public Sphere, First-Year Writing, Honors Writing, and Scientific/Technical Writing categories.

3. NSHSS Creative Writing Scholarship

• Awarded by: National Society of High School Scholars
• Deadline: October 2022

Every year, the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) offers three scholarships worth $2,000 for fiction and three scholarships worth $2,000 for poetry. Applications open in July and close in October. All high school students graduating in 2023, 2024, or 2025, as well as recently graduated students, are eligible. Students are required to submit an original writing piece in both categories.

4. The Reedsy National Creative Writing Scholarship

• Awarded by: Reedsy
• Deadline: April 2022

The Reedsy Creative Writing Scholarship is a biannual scholarship that rewards aspiring novel writers with a $1,000 cash incentive which is directly transferred to the recipient’s educational institute. Reedsy also considers these recipients for further sponsorship as they become novel writers. Applicants must be studying at an accredited college or university and must submit a 1,500-word to 7,500-word original chapter of an unpublished novel.

5. Bobette Bibo Gugliotta Memorial Scholarships for Creative Writing

• Awarded by: Silicon Valley Community Foundation
• Deadline: February 2023

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation offers $1,000 in scholarships to aspiring creative writing students. Only US citizens or A.B 540 students are allowed to apply. Applicants must be current graduating seniors or graduates of a high school in San Mateo or Santa Clara County. Moreover, they must be admitted to a four-year degree program as a full-time student. The application closes in February.

6. Writing the Future Scholarship

• Awarded by: DiBella Law Offices PC

DiBella Law Offices PC offers a $1,000 one-time, non-renewable scholarship for post-secondary education. Any graduate or college student enrolled in a four-year university can apply. Moreover, students admitted to a two-year college or who have earned a high school diploma can also apply.

7. Ray Bradbury Award for Science Fiction & Fantasy

• Awarded by: Alliance for Young Artists & Writers
• Deadline: December 2022

If you love writing about supernatural, magical, futuristic, scientific, and technological themes, you should consider applying for the Ray Bradbury Award. It’s open to residents of the United States and the selected qualified applicant will receive a $1,000 cash award. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is December 1.

8. $1,500 Video Contest Scholarship for Students Who Enjoy Writing

• Awarded by: Cool Club

If you like writing stories or making videos, you should consider this scholarship by Cool Club. This scholarship offers a $1,000 scholarship prize to the winner and $500 to the runner-up. Applicants must be high school, university, or community college students. IvyPanda also offers a similar scholarship.

9. Dever Award for Freshman Writing

• Awarded by: Boston College
• Deadline: December 1, 2022

Boston College is one of the few colleges to offer essay scholarships to first-year students in writing. The Department of English at Boston College awards two students with a cash prize for possessing incredible essay writing skills. Boston College also has other scholarships like the Doherty Honors Project Award and English Language Learner Essay Award, which are open to all first-year students.

10. Eleanor M Wolfson Memorial Scholarship

• Awarded by: First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania
• Deadline: Not specified

This scholarship is designed for Montoursville Area High School seniors who want to study creative writing at Yale University. ​​Applications need a Student Aid Report (SAR) from FAFSA and an acceptance letter from the university. They also need to submit an essay, a resume, a letter of recommendation, and their school transcripts.

Yes, you should apply for a creative writing scholarship. A creative writing scholarship can immensely impact your career by letting you finish your studies with less student debt. What Are Writing Scholarships?

Writing scholarships come in two primary forms. The first kind targets students who intend to pursue writing-related majors or careers. The second option allows anyone with writing skills to earn scholarship awards but doesn’t necessarily limit eligibility based on the student’s major or future career plans.

Scholarships for young writers can help your student pursue their dream while giving them a chance to avoid student loan debt. Since many writing careers don’t start with large salaries, this can make pursuing a career in that arena more affordable.

In most cases, scholarships for writers require applicants to submit some form of writing sample. This can be in addition to other essays or the only written component requirement.

It’s important to note your student needs to read the fine print on all of the scholarships for writers they consider. In some cases, the written pieces or scholarship essays they turn in become the property of the awarding organization, regardless of whether your student receives a scholarship. As a result, some only allow unique writing per the rules, so your student might not be able to submit the same piece repeatedly.

Creative Writing Scholarships and Awards acknowledge excellence in creative writing by University of Louisville undergraduate and graduate students. Scholarship funds are distributed in varying amounts of tuition reimbursement. You do not have to be an English major to apply. Judges for the competition are the members of the English Department Creative Writing Committee.

Creative Writing Scholarships & Prizes Available by Student Submission for Spring Quarter 2023

Deadline: April 28

The Fred and Edith Herman Memorial Prize from the Academy of American Poets For the best poem or groups of poems. Open to any UCLA student, graduate or undergraduate. Cash award of $100 and inclusion of the prize winner’s name in a list of national winners published by the Academy of American Poets.

The Olfet Agrama Prize for Creative Writing  Given in alternate years for a poem (or group of poems) or a work of fiction. This year’s award will be given for fiction. The contest is open to any UCLA undergraduate who is currently enrolled in courses in creative writing. Submission materials should include creative writing course(s) and quarter(s) taken. Cash award $400.

The May Merrill Miller Award  Given in alternate years for a poem (or group of poems) or a work of fiction. This year’s award will be given for fiction. The contest is open to any UCLA undergraduate. Cash award $500 first prize; $300 second prize.

The Shirle Dorothy Robbins Creative Writing Award  Given in alternate years for a poem (or group of poems) or fiction. This year’s award will be for poetry. Open to any UCLA student, graduate or undergraduate. Cash award of $1,000 first place and $600 second place.

David Wong Louie Memorial Creative Writing Prize  For a short story or creative essay. Given annually to a student studying creative writing in the Department of English. Submission materials should include creative writing course(s) and quarter(s) taken. $1,000 cash award.

The Ruth Brill Scholarship Award  For a work of fiction. Open to any UCLA student enrolled in current or previous creative writing courses. Submission must indicate course(s) and quarter(s) taken. Cash award of $1,000 first place and $600 second place.

The Christopher Zyda Creative Writing Prize  For a work of fiction (short story, play, or screenplay for film or television). Open to any upper-division (junior or senior) English or American Literature and Culture major. Preference given to applicants indicating evidence of enrollment in current or previous creative writing courses. Cash award of $2500.

How to Apply

Submit by e-mail to  [email protected] . Entries in the poetry contests must be separate from entries in the prose contests. The subject line of the message should be your last name, the last four digits of your UID, and either “Prose,” or “Poetry.” In the body of your message, include your name, e-mail address, class standing, UID number, major, and information about any creative writing courses you have taken in the UCLA Department of English (title, year, and quarter of enrollment).

The submission itself must be a PDF attachment titled either “Prose” or “Poetry,” with the last four digits of your UID, and should have a title page with the last four digits of your UID. Your name or any other identifying information  should not appear  on any page of the submission itself, which the selection committee will read blindly. After submissions have been read and ranked, a Departmental staff or faculty member who is not on the committee will determine the award(s) for which winners are eligible.

For poetry submissions: It is recommended that submissions be no shorter than 4 pages or longer than 8. Fonts should be 12-point, preferably serif face (such as Times New Roman) unless the type size and face are intrinsic to the work.

The Shirley Collier Prize Awarded annually by the Department of English

Genre: A novel or biography published in 2022 or at least 100 pages of an unpublished book in either of these genres. Short stories and novellas are ineligible for this award. The work must be of outstanding quality.

Entrants: Graduate or undergraduate students majoring in the Humanities, as well as faculty in the Humanities. Extension students are ineligible. Preference will be given to students; but in all cases, the same criterion of excellence will apply, regardless of whether works are published, finished manuscripts, or only partially complete. Previous winners are ineligible. All entrants must submit a cover page with contact information. Anonymity is not required.

Award: $5,000. If no entries are considered suitable, the prize will not be given.

Departmental Scholarships & Prizes Available by Student Submission in Spring Quarter 2023

The Barbara Bellow Watson Shakespeare Essay Contest Awarded annually for the best critical or research paper on a Shakespeare subject. Manuscripts should be submitted no later than  12 Noon Monday, May 2, 2023 . For more information and to apply: https://english.ucla.edu/shakespeare-essay-contest/

Harold Dee Fox Memorial Scholarship Established to honor and memorialize Harold Dee Fox and his intense love for English literature, the purpose of this scholarship is “to enrich the intellectual environment of the campus and community” by enabling “outstanding undergraduate students…to attain a dream of achieving a bachelor’s degree.” Open to declared majors in the Department of English with a UCLA GPA of 3.7 or higher; preference given to a transfer student from a Los Angeles Community College who is receiving financial aid. U.S. citizens who are California residents also preferred. Application materials must be submitted before 12 Noon, Friday, May 20, 2022 . Two winners will be announced on Monday, June 6, and a $1500 scholarship will be awarded to each during the 2022-2023 academic year. Peter Rotter Essay Prize Awarded to undergraduates who have written the best paper for a regular or special studies course in the Humanities. Professors nominate students for an essay written for an undergraduate course completed in the spring, fall, or winter quarter prior to the deadline. Teague-Melville-Elliot Prize Awarded to the undergraduate who has written the best piece of research scholarship in the Humanities. Professors nominate students for an essay written for an undergraduate course completed in the spring, fall, or winter quarter prior to the deadline. Clara Rusk Hastings Undergraduate Scholarship For recognition of outstanding achievement in English 10A, 10B, and 10C. Nominations from English 10 series instructors and teaching assistants are taken during spring quarter of each year.

Thompson Prize Made possible by the Dr. Warren Craig and Erile R. Thompson Scholarship/Fellowship. Announced each year at the English Department Commencement Celebration in recognition of the outstanding Departmental Honors thesis.

Creative Writing Scholarships

Performance scholarships in creative writing are provided through the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts . Awards are for $850 (partial) or $1,700 (full) for the academic year. Scholarship students work with creative writing faculty and staff for four hours per week during their assignments. This scholarship is available to undergraduate and incoming APSU students only. To apply, email a 10-20-page manuscript, typed and double-spaced, of fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction, to Calie Benke, Managing Editor of Zone 3  journal, at benke [email protected] or to Prof. Amy Wright at [email protected] . These applications may include a combination of genres but should not contain scholarly work. If you have any questions, please contact Prof. Wright at [email protected] .

Creative Writing Scholarships and Prizes

The prizes and scholarships below are awarded by the UW Seattle English Department’s Creative Writing Program . Winners will be notified by the end of Spring Quarter. 

Prizes will be awarded at the end of Spring Quarter. Scholarships will be paid out in the following academic year.  During the term of the scholarship, recipients must enroll in a minimum of 6 credits.

The application deadline for these awards is the last day of Winter Quarter (March 15, 2024) at 5pm Pacific Time, unless otherwise indicated.

Requirements

Unless stated otherwise in the Contest Description , eligibility requirements for the prizes below are the following:

• Either a UW Seattle English major enrolled as an undergraduate for two quarters by the application deadline , OR a UW Seattle English Graduate student enrolled in the MFA program in Creative Writing
• UW GPA of 3.5
• UW English GPA of 3.7
• Minimum of 10 credits of completed UW English course work  completed before Winter Quarter begins. Courses taken during Winter Quarter will not count towards the 10 credit minimum.

Application Process

• The Creative Writing Contests deadline for 2024 has passed. Please check back in early 2025 for next year's contests applications.
• Remove your name and/or student number from the file containing your prose or poetry submission, as these are read anonymously.
• For prose contests, submit: 2-3 short stories, works of creative nonfiction, or a novel excerpt (up to 30 pages/9,000 words). If you are excerpting from a longer work, please provide a synopsis of the whole. 
• For poetry contests, submit up to 100 total lines of poetry, and no more than 10 poems.

Edith K Draham Scholarship - $6,000 (one undergraduate winner per year) -  Applicant must be a full-time sophomore or junior English Major at the time of application, and be eligible for need-based financial aid.

Charlotte Paul Reese Fiction Award - $2,400 (one undergraduate winner per year) -  OPEN THROUGH NOMINATION BY CREATIVE WRITING FACULTY ONLY.  Currently enrolled English majors who are Sophomores or Juniors are eligible. Nominated students will be notified by the Creative Writing Program by email.

Poetry - Undergraduates

Edith K Draham Scholarship - $6,000 (one undergraduate winner per year) -  Applicant must be a full-time Sophomore or Junior English Major at the time of application, and be eligible for need-based financial aid.  

Stephanie Dassel Barden Endowed Scholarship in Creative Writing - $3000 (one undergraduate winner per year)

Arthur Oberg Award for Poetry - $2,000 (one $2000 winner or two $1000 undergraduate winners per year) -  Applicant must have completed a beginning (ENGL 283) or intermediate (ENGL 383) poetry writing class in the 12 months preceding the contest deadline.

Joan Grayston Poetry Prize - $1,500 (one undergraduate winner per year)

Academy of American Poets Prize - $100 (one winner per year) - Open to all  currently enrolled graduate or undergraduate students at the University of Washington Seattle.  This prize is awarded for the best poem or group of poems. More information on this contest is available on the Academy of American Poets website .

David Guterson Award - $1,500 (one graduate winner per year) -  Must be an MFA prose writer completing their degree. Applicants should submit a draft of their MFA Creative Thesis by April 15th at 5pm .  A separate entry form will be sent to graduating MFA students to apply for this award.

Nelson Bentley M FA Award in Creative Writing (Prose) - $1,500 (one graduate winner per year) -  Must be an MFA student completing their first year in the program at the time of application.

Poetry - Graduates

Scholarships for High School Students

• Ojeda Multi-County Youth Scholarship : This scholarship aims to assist inner-city high school students so they can afford the costs of their tuition and books. Applicants must be of Hispanic or African American origin, and have a minimum 2.9 GPA to apply for this scholarship. ( Applications closed)

For undocumented students with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status who are not eligible for federal student aid funds, but may be eligible for financial aid from the state government or the college, depending on where they live or go to school. Play close attention to eligibility requirements.

• The Dream National Scholarship : For highly motivated undocumented students with significant, unmet financial need, enrolled or intending to enroll in a bachelor’s degree program. Must have graduated or will graduate high school by the end of 22-23′ academic year. (Applications closed)

• Mary Bowman Arts in Activism Award : These $5,000 awards are intended to support young artivists (27 years of age or younger) each year who exemplify Mary’s passion for the arts as the vehicle for their own HIV/AIDS and/or health and social justice community activism and expression. • Singhaus Scholarship for the Performing Arts : The Singhaus Scholarship for the Performing Arts provides financial assistance to elevate young talent in their pursuit of a career in theatre: performance, technical, creative, costume design. This scholarship is designed to support members of the Central Florida LGBTQ+ community and their allies. (Applications closed)
• Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest : The Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest is open to high school seniors, undergraduate, and graduate students. You must write an essay of between 800 and 1,600 words on one of the three topics listed on the sponsor’s website to be considered for this award. ( Application Deadline: November 6, 2023 )
• Beacon Scholarship for Rural America : The Beacon Scholarship for Rural America is intended for applicants who are college-bound graduating high school seniors, current college students, or adult learners with a GPA of 3.0 or higher (high school or college) and who are planning to enroll in an accredited college program. • Princeton Prize in Race Relations : For high school students who have undertaken significant efforts to advance racial equity and understanding in their schools and communities. Winners will receive an award of $1,000 and are invited to participate in a Symposium on Race . (Applications closed)

• Share Your Poetry Scholarship : The Share Your Poetry Scholarship will support students of any educational level who write poetry, encouraging their future in writing. (Application closed)
• G2 Overachievers Student Grant : To be considered, you must submit a 1,000 – to 2,000 – word handwritten essay explaining how you (or the person you are nominating) make a difference in the world around you and why you deserve to be recognized for these efforts. • Growing Up In America Art, Essay, Video Contest | AACI, NBC Bay Area Hosted by AACI and in partnership with NBC Bay Area, Growing Up in America (GUA) is an annual art, essay and video contest that reaches hundreds of Bay Area students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Founded 25+ years ago by Lance Lew of NBC Bay Area, GUA gives a unique platform for young people to creatively explore and celebrate their cultural identity through the lens of civic engagement. 2024’s Contest Theme is “I Choose My Future” participants are prompted to reflect on their vision of their future self and their future community. • 2024 ISF Scholarship | Islamic Scholarship Fund 
• $3,000-$10,000  Students who are Muslim or active members of the Muslim community may apply for the Islamic Scholarship Fund. The ISF awards multiple scholarships each year ranging from $3,000-$10,000, though the amounts and number of recipients will vary. Students must submit applications including essay questions, work samples, and letters of recommendation, and must also be majoring in an ISF-supported field related to media or politics. Scholarships and Awards

Every year, the Creative Writing program offers the Walter and Nancy Kidd Memorial Writing Competition in Poetry and Fiction (“Kidd Prize”) to undergraduate writers for excellence in poetry and fiction.

The Creative Writing Program invites two nationally known authors (one poet, one fiction writer) to judge student manuscripts. First, second, and third place are awarded in each genre. Certificates with judges’ comments accompany this prize.

The Kidd Prize is awarded each spring and is open to all undergraduates currently enrolled at the University of Oregon. First, second and third place are awarded in each genre (poetry and fiction). Winners receive a monetary award and a certificate that includes remarks from the competition judge in their genre.

The Creative Writing program invites two nationally known authors (one poet, one fiction writer) to judge student manuscripts. Past judges have included Mark Jarman, Miriam Gershow, Frederick Busch, B. H. Fairchild, Mark Doty, Rosellen Brown, Mary Gaitskill, Yusef Komunyakaa, Sharon Olds, Gerald Stern, Susan Straight, Edward Hirsch, Charles Baxter, Eavan Boland, Tobias Wolfe, Antonya Nelson, Richard Bausch, Richard Tillinghast, Charles Wright, and N. Scott Momaday.

Eligibility

• Open to all undergraduates currently enrolled at the University of Oregon.
• Participation in the Kidd Program is not required.
• Submissions previously appearing in University of Oregon publications which showcase undergraduate work (such as UNBOUND) are acceptable; however, all other published work is ineligible.

Submission Guidelines

Entrants may submit in both genres.

• Fiction : One story up to 20 pages (double-spaced)
• Poetry : Up to two poems on separate pages (single-spaced is acceptable)

Entries must be typed in black using a 12-point standard font (such as Times New Roman). Manuscrips must be identified in the following manner:

Manuscripts will not be returned and those not meeting submission guidelines will be disqualified. Judges’ decisions are final.

Entries must be submitted online by the end of the day on Monday, April 3.

Selection and Award

This contest is judged by guest authors participating in the Creative Writing Program’s Reading Series (Spring term). Winners are announced during the last Reading Series event, so all contestants are encouraged to attend.

All disbursements are made through Student Accounts (balances due may be subtracted from the award amount).
