Reading/Writing Vocabulary for Naturalization Test

Reading/Writing Vocabulary for Naturalization Test

The naturalization test has three components of the English test: speaking, reading and writing. The speaking portion of the English test is the same as the earlier test. An applicant’s ability to speak English is determined by the USCIS officer from the applicant’s answers to questions normally asked during the eligibility interview on the Application for Naturalization, Form N-400. Modifications were made to the new reading and writing tests. The sentences included on the new reading and writing tests will not be made publicly available. The USCIS released reading and writing vocabulary lists containing all the words found in the new English reading and writing tests. Applicants can use the vocabulary lists to study. Applicants must read 1 out of 3 items correctly to pass the reading test. Applicants must write 1 out of 3 items correctly to pass the writing test. To increase the meaningfulness of the reading and writing tests, the content of the reading and writing questions are civics-based.

Citizenship Test: Sentence Writing Practice

How do i practice for the writing part of the naturalization exam.

Now that you have studied for the civics part of the Naturalization interview and learned  all 100 of the USCIS test questions and answers by using either the study guide’s citizenship test flashcards or citizenship test quizzes to prepare, concentrating on another part of the naturalization exam, the writing part, comes next. Our citizenship study guide’s writing exercises will help do just that!

To pass the writing part of the US citizenship test, you must show the USCIS officer that you have an ability to write one out of three sentences correctly in English. Many applicants are concerned about the writing part of the naturalization exam, fearing that their spelling, capitalization or punctuation will cause them to fail.   According to the USCIS website pertaining to how the writing aspect of the citizenship test is scored, the following applies:

An applicant shall not be failed because of spelling, capitalization, or punctuation errors unless the errors would prevent understanding the meaning of the sentence.

You will not be failed on the written part of the naturalization exam for spelling, capitalization or punctuation errors as long as the written meaning of the sentence is understandable.

Although we do not know the exact sentence you will be asked to write for the USCIS officer, we do know all the USCIS vocabulary that can be used. Based on that vocabulary, we created audio citizenship writing exercises of sample sentences. A sample sentence is verbally given and a writing space is provided.

  • "The President lives in the White House."
  • "Washington is the Father of Our Country."
  • "We elect the President in November."
  • "The capital of the United States is Washington D.C."
  • "There are one hundred Senators in Congress."
  • "The flag is red, white and blue."

The citizenship test writing exercises contain samples of all the USCIS vocabulary that can be used. With over 50 sentences to practice with by listening to and writing each of those, you will have learned all the words necessary and structure to help you pass the writing part of the US Citizenship test.
