Description

Choose this reading and discussion guide and dramatic exposition annotation activity when your high school ELA class begins reading The Crucible . In Arthur Miller's play, the playwright uses dramatic exposition to provide essential background about the events and characters in his play and to enhance his allegory portraying Joseph McCarthy's Red Scare in the United States in the 1950s. This activity prompts close reading of those sections. Also included in this bundle are close reading questions for Act 1 examining characterization, plot, literary devices, theme, and more. Detailed answer key with text references is included. No prep.

Printable PDF or TPT Digital Easel Activity

This resource for Arthur Miller's The Crucible is two products for the complete examination of Act 1.

First is a Dramatic Exposition Annotation activity:

  • The Crucible is full of dramatic exposition essential for students' understanding of the Puritan age and the history of the witch trials.
  • This activity helps them navigate that exposition.
  • This is an activity requiring students to read, analyze, and annotate the dramatic exposition in Act 1 of The Crucible .
  • I duplicated those sections of the act so that students can highlight and write comments about the text on the handout.

There are 63 tasks requiring students to

  • identify allusions,
  • define terms, and
  • analyze plot and character.
  • Students are also asked to paraphrase each paragraph on lines provided on the handout.
  • I use a clear font.
  • Text is spaced so students have room to write.
  • This is a great activity requiring close reading and the use of various strategies.

The second resource is 88 Questions for Comprehension and Analysis:

  • There are 88 questions (some questions within questions) requiring students' close reading of Act 1.
  • The resource could also be used as a discussion guide or a very detailed reading check.

Questions cover:

  • The girls' indiscretion in the forest
  • Characterization of the main characters
  • Contention among Salem townspeople
  • The pros and cons of there being witchcraft in Salem
  • The interrogation of Tituba and the girls
  • The flurry of accusations
  • I use a clear font and provide space for student responses.
  • Two simple graphics.
  • These resources are also available individually in my store.
