Narrative Essay: My Favorite Summer Vacation

essay about my favourite summer vacation

Each summer is beautiful for me because I spend it with my family. I am well aware that people my age spend their summer vacations with friends, partying all the time. But, after an entire year away from my family, I must admit I would always choose to spend a summer vacation with my family rather than friends. After all, my friends are what I get back to when the vacation time ends.

If someone asks me to choose one perfect vacation that is better than all the rest, I’d have to choose my trip to the Lakedale Resort at Three Lakes, Washington. The place was perfect for a modern camper – combining an Airstream trailer rental, canvas tent and log cabins, and surrounded by three marvelous lakes.

But, this is not my favorite summer vacation just because of the location. We have visited so many wonderful places during the summers, I am pretty sure some even looked better. What I do remember is the fun.

This is probably because of the three lakes, but the choices we had for activities were so many, we couldn’t possibly do everything before we went back home. I remember how much we fought over what we are going to do. My father wants us to do group activities when we go on summer vacation because ‘’It wouldn’t be a family vacation if we don’t stick together’’.

So, if you came and watched us on our family vacations in the summer, you would see two very bored parents just sitting next to their children when they are doing some kid activities. You could also see us trout fishing with them because my dad loves fishing.

This year that I am talking about, we fought for a long time about the trout fishing activity. We wanted to do canoeing, so we agreed that they will come with us on his, and we would go fishing with them. As it turned out, we had more fun on the fishing expedition than we had canoeing. For our dad, it was the opposite.

We fell in the water because this was our first time canoeing and we had no idea what we were doing. Both my sister and I were soaking wet because we fell exactly eleven times. Since my dad has done this in the past, they had a blast!

When the time came to go fishing, we were devastated by the idea that we’d have to spend an entire day looking for trout when there were so many things we could do. I honestly preferred just sitting near the fire pit on a picnic table all day, rather than waiting for a trout to catch my father’s bait.

However, luck was on my side that day. Fishing turned out to be such a fun activity, I am now convincing my dad to do it every summer. My dad was not so lucky. He spent over five hours just waiting and waiting, got sunburned and therefore had a fever all night. After a couple of hours of no fish caught whatsoever, he kept moving towards me in the hope that he will get lucky, too. But, the fish just seemed to run away from him and catch on my fishing rod instead.

The next day we decided to be a little less active since my father already had a tough night with the fever and the stress. We stayed near the cabin and joined those organized activities like cooking on a campfire and making tie-dyed shirts. We didn’t separate for even an hour and had the times of our lives.

This was way before I left home to go study in another city. For a family who cannot stand each other and fights all the time at home, it was a miracle how well we agreed and how fun our summer vacation was. Every summer we spend together is like this now, but now it is not such a strange thing. After over half a year of being separated and not living together, we would be happy if someone put us in one room for an entire month. That year, this was the strangest and most unexpected twist.

I will always remember that summer with my family. I don’t think I’ll be forgetting about the other places and vacations, too, but this is the summer when I understood that there is nothing more important than family. Whenever a friend jokes about my summer vacationing when I tell them I won’t be joining them this year too, I just remember that summer and everything seems right.

I don’t think I’ll ever envy my friends for spending their vacation partying. I will pity them for being away from their family once again because holidays and vacations are best spent with the people you love most. What I do know at this point is that when I have my own family, I will take them to that same spot and set the same rules as my father. I hope my fishing experience will be terrible as his, and they will fall in love with it.

An incredible time to visit hilly destinations with family are holidays. They give an escape from the same monotonous life schedule. The summer season is an incredible time to have those stress free excursions and get in touch with nature which is nearly impossible in our daily schedules for the whole year. I visited my grandparents last year and stayed with them for two weeks. In contrast with the word summer, the cool thing about summer vacations is discovering new trails, creating new things, etc. During my stay with my grandparents, I also read novels and other books that helped me expand my knowledge of the world. For the remainder of the vacation days, I spent them playing games and cooking my favourite dishes.

Summer is a time to bask in the warmth of the sun, explore new horizons, and create lasting memories.

During this break, I embarked on a journey of relaxation and adventure. I had the opportunity to visit the serene beaches of a coastal town. The soothing sound of waves and the gentle caress of the sea breeze offered a perfect escape from the bustling city life. The sand between my toes and the sun kissing my skin provided a sense of tranquillity.

Holidays are an amazing time for us to visit hill stations with family. The summer season is a great time for us to take stress-free trips and get to trek in nature, which we aren’t able to do in our busy schedules for the entire year. Last year I visited my grandparents and stayed with them for 20 days. The best thing about the summer holidays is creating and discovering new things in the village. While enjoying my stay, I also learned some new things that expanded my knowledge. I spent the rest of the summer holidays playing board and video games and cooking under my mother’s supervision.

As the summer days slowly waned, a sense of nostalgia crept in. The memories and lessons from this summer vacation will continue to shape my journey as I return to the world of academics with renewed vigour and a heart full of gratitude.

Summer vacation, that much-awaited break from the mundane routines of school and study, is a time of rejuvenation, exploration, and personal growth. It offers the perfect opportunity to unwind, reflect, and create lasting memories.

During this past summer vacation, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and adventure. The journey began with a sense of anticipation and excitement, as I bid adieu to textbooks and classrooms. My destination was a coastal paradise, where golden sands met the azure sea. The tranquil rhythm of the waves provided a serene backdrop for relaxation, reflection, and renewal.

The break also provided ample time for cultural exploration. I wandered through quaint streets, explored historical sites, and engaged with locals to gain insights into their way of life. Trying local cuisine became a delightful adventure in itself, as I savoured flavours that were a symphony of tradition and innovation.

Amidst exploration, I found time to reconnect with my family. Shared laughter, deep conversations, and moments of camaraderie became the heart of the vacation. We hiked through lush trails, picnicked in meadows, and watched sunsets that painted the sky in hues of orange and pink. These experiences solidified the bonds that make family the cornerstone of our lives.

Beyond leisure, the vacation allowed for personal growth. I pursued hobbies I had set aside during the academic year, from painting to playing musical instruments. I also volunteered with a local community organization, an experience that not only gave me a sense of purpose but also introduced me to remarkable individuals and stories.

As the vacation drew to a close, a sense of nostalgia settled in. The days had flown by, leaving behind memories etched in the sands of time. The journey, both physical and introspective, had transformed me. I returned with a newfound appreciation for the beauty of the world, the importance of relationships, and the significance of taking breaks to recharge.

A summer vacation is more than just a break from school; it’s a transformative experience that encompasses relaxation, exploration, and growth. It’s a canvas upon which we paint our memories, our passions, and our connections. As I stepped back into the world of academics, I carried with me the lessons and experiences of this summer, poised to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

How to Write an Essay on How You Spent Your Summer Vacation

Last Updated: January 4, 2020

Writing an essay on how you spent your summer vacation is a classic way of starting a new school year. Think about this essay as an opportunity to tell a story about your summer while reflecting on the experiences you had. Choose a memorable moment you had this summer and start crafting your essay, giving as many details as possible.

Choosing a Topic

Step 1 Look back on mementos you kept from the summer.

  • These can also make nice visual aids if you are asked to present your essay.

Step 2 Make a list of the things you’ve done over summer vacation.

  • A list might be full of things like babysitting, attending a camp, working at a local store, taking a road trip, etc. This type of brainstorming can help you pick major events and other important moments from your summer.

Step 3 Write about a memorable moment.

  • For example, maybe you spent your summer traveling around Japan. Think of a memorable moment you had while traveling — maybe you walked up a mountain in the pouring rain — and write about this moment, adding lots of details.

Step 4 Create an outline...

  • For example, if you're writing about spending time at the beach, your outline could remind you to talk about the sandcastle building contest you entered, the dolphins you saw, and the ice cream you ate every day.
  • Details might be what the other sandcastles looked like, how far away the dolphins were, and what kind of toppings were on your ice cream.
  • Your outline is just to help you organize your thoughts — it can be written by hand or typed.

Crafting the Essay

Step 1 Focus on your feelings, interactions, and thoughts.

  • Instead of saying that you worked in a pet store, ate a PB&J sandwich, and walked home every day, talk about more than just your actions. You could talk about which pets are your favorites to work with, how it felt to eat the same sandwich every day, or what you thought about on your walk home.

Step 2 Use your 5 senses to explain your experiences.

  • Using sensory details like these will help your readers visualize and engage with your writing. These help your audience make your experiences feel real to them, even though they weren't there.

Step 3 Describe activities you did in each place you went.

  • For example, instead of saying “I went to the beach this summer,” try saying “I spent my summer swimming in the frigid water at Virginia Beach.” The more details you can provide, the more engaged your reader will be.

Step 4 Choose precise, descriptive adjectives.

  • Instead of saying “the burger was really good,” you could say, “the burger was juicy and filling.”

Step 5 Revise and edit your essay carefully.

  • Don't just rely on spellcheck. It will help catch some errors, but it will miss some things, too.
  • Ask a parent or other adult to read over your essay too, if you'd like.
  • Setting your essay aside for a little while will give you a fresher perspective when you go back to revise it.

Structuring Your Essay

Step 1 Start with a strong introduction.

  • Make sure your conclusion doesn’t just copy the introduction.

Are you required to write an essay about your summer vacation or your holiday break? This can be a tough assignment to tackle at first glance. But if you think about it, there are lots of interesting things that happen on your vacation that others might enjoy reading about. The key to success is to zero in on the experiences, people, or situations that made your vacation unique.

Summer vacation can be busy or lazy, funny or serious. You may have traveled with your family, worked every day, fallen in love, or coped with a difficult situation. To start your essay, you'll need to choose a topic and tone.

Family Vacation Essay Topic Ideas

If you traveled with your family, you may have some great stories to tell. After all, every family is crazy in its own way. Want some proof? How many Hollywood films have themes about family holidays or trips? Those films are popular because they enable us to glimpse inside the crazy family lives of others. Alternatively, you may have a more serious story to tell.

Consider these funny topics:

  • Why I'll Never Go Back to (insert place name)
  • How (insert name) Drove Me Crazy in Five Days
  • Traveling to (insert city) Then and Now
  • The Hazards of Traveling With a (person or thing)
  • Why You Shouldn't Take a Dog to (insert place)
  • I Left (insert city) But My (lost item) Stayed
  • Why I Couldn't Sleep in (place name)

If your family vacation involved something more serious, think about one of these topics:

  • The Love I Left Behind in (insert place)
  • Saying Good-Bye to (insert person or place)
  • Exploring (place's) Secrets
  • An Emotional Trip

Summer Job Essay Topic Ideas

Not everyone gets to spend the summer having fun; some of us have to work for a living. If you spent your summer at a job, chances are you met a lot of interesting characters, dealt with complicated situations, or even saved the day once or twice. Here are some ideas for summer job topics:

  • The Boss's Day Off
  • The Customer From Hell
  • What I Learned from My Customers
  • Why I'll Never Go Into the ___ Business
  • Six Things I Learned on the Job

How to Write the Essay

Once you've chosen your topic and your tone, think about the story you want to tell. In most cases, your essay will follow a typical story arc:

  • The hook (the funny, sad, or scary sentence that grabs the reader's attention)
  • The rising action (the beginning of your story)
  • The climax (the most exciting moment in your story)
  • The denouement (the aftermath or ending to your story)

Start by writing out the basic outline of your story. For example, "I started cleaning a guest's room and found that they'd left behind a wallet with $100 in cash. When I turned it in without taking a single dollar for myself, my boss rewarded me with a $100 gift certificate and a special award for honesty."

Next, start fleshing out the details. What was the room like? What was the guest like? What did the wallet look like and where was it left? Were you tempted to just take the money and turn in the wallet empty? How did your boss look when you handed her the wallet? How did you feel when you got your reward? How did others around you react to your honesty?

Once you've told your story in all its detail, it's time to write the hook and conclusion. What question or thought can you use to grab your reader's attention? For example: "What would you do if you found a wallet loaded with cash? That was my dilemma this summer."

How to Write a Summer Vacation Essay

Summer break is a great time to kick back, relax and enjoy yourself and, if you’re lucky, to go on an awesome trip! But how can you translate your amazing vacation into a narrative essay for English class or work it to fit a common application prompt? Here’s some tips to help you out:

Save Mementos From Your Summer

Even if you’re not the sentimental type, make sure to document your summer travels. Take pictures, write diary entries, save train stubs. This is the best way to ensure that you’ll remember your summer well enough to look back and write about it later.

Write an Outline Before Writing Your Essay

Regardless of whether you spent your summer break in Madison, Wisconsin or Madrid, Spain, you should plan out what you’re going to write before diving in. Make a list of what you’ve done over the summer so that you can later narrow down a focus for the essay itself. Keep in mind that the best essay topics aren’t always on the most exciting activities an essay about getting stuck in traffic on the way to the airport on the way to Denver could work better than an essay on hiking the Grand Canyon and looking out at the incredible view.

Be Specific

Since you’re going to keep a record of your trip and come up with an outline before writing your essay, you should be able to put some detail into your essay. Be as specific as possible when it comes to your word choice. If you’re talking about some gelato that you ate in Italy, don’t say that it was “delicious.” Instead, say that it was “creamy and chocolatey, with a note of vanilla.”

Focus on Feelings About Your Trip, Not What You Did

If you spent the summer on the beach in Cape Cod, you shouldn’t write about what you did. You should write instead about how you felt while there. An essay that reads “I went to beach, then had lobster for dinner” is not quite as exciting as one that goes, “As I went for a walk on the beach, I thought about how lucky I was to be able to enjoy nature.” Feelings translate better into text than events, and you should try to place those feelings into context.

Stick to Writing About a Small Moment

With any essay you write especially a short one it’s important to focus a narrow moment in time. Don’t write about your entire week in Paris. Instead, write about the moment you got lost in the city at midnight and fumbled your way home in the dark. You don’t have to pick a particularly glamorous moment from your trip, but you should pick one that meant something to you.

Edit Your Essay Carefully

The shorter the essay, the more important precision is. Regardless of length, make sure to carefully read over what you’ve written to make sure every sentence conveys the message you most want displayed. The editing process matters just as much as the writing process, even if it seems less so.

We saw colorful flowers, tall trees, and listened to the sweet songs of birds. I loved learning about different types of plants and insects. It was amazing to see butterflies fluttering around and squirrels playing in the trees.
  • Beach Fun: One of the highlights of my summer vacation was going to the beach. The warm sand beneath my feet and the cool ocean waves made me feel so happy. I built sandcastles, played beach volleyball, and collected seashells. The best part was when I had a splash in the water and tried to catch the waves. I even went for a boat ride with my parents and saw dolphins jumping in the sea. It was truly an unforgettable experience.
  • Family Time: Summer vacation also gave me the opportunity to spend quality time with my family. We went on picnics to beautiful spots, had barbecues in the backyard, and played board games together. We laughed a lot and created wonderful memories. We also visited our grandparents and had a great time listening to their stories and playing games with them. Family time is always special, and I cherish those moments.
  • Learning Something New: I believe that vacations are not only about having fun but also about learning something new. During my summer break, I joined a swimming class and learned how to swim. It was a bit scary at first, but with the help of my instructor and the support of my parents, I overcame my fear and enjoyed every moment in the pool. Learning a new skill made me feel proud of myself.

My summer vacation was a fantastic adventure filled with joy, laughter, and new experiences. I had a great time exploring nature, playing at the beach, spending quality time with my family, and learning to swim. It was a break from school, but I also learned valuable life lessons and made wonderful memories that I will treasure forever. I cannot wait for the next summer vacation to have more exciting adventures!

250 Words Essay on My Summer Vacation

Embracing the unpredictable.

Summer vacations are usually perceived as a time of relaxation, a break from the rigors of academic life. However, my summer vacation was a dynamic blend of learning, adventure, and self-discovery.

Exploring the Wilderness

I spent the initial weeks of my vacation in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. The experience was far from the conventional beach vacation. It was a deep dive into the wilderness, a realm where nature dictates the rules. The rainforest was a living classroom that offered lessons in ecology, conservation, and survival.

Internship and Skill Development

Post the Amazon adventure, I embarked on an internship with a local non-profit organization. This stint was not merely a resume booster, but a platform to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations. It honed my problem-solving skills, fostered team spirit, and instilled a sense of social responsibility.

Embracing Cultural Diversity

The final leg of my vacation was spent backpacking across Europe. This journey was a cultural immersion, a celebration of diversity. Each city was a unique tapestry of history, art, and cuisine. It broadened my perspectives, encouraging me to appreciate and respect cultural differences.

Reflection and Growth

In retrospect, my summer vacation was an enriching journey of self-growth. It was a period of stepping out of my comfort zone, embracing challenges, and learning from them. The experiences gained during this time have shaped my worldview, preparing me for future endeavors.

In conclusion, summer vacations are not just about leisure but also about exploring new avenues of learning and personal development. They provide a platform for experiential learning that complements our academic knowledge, making us well-rounded individuals.

500 Words Essay on My Summer Vacation

Introduction.

Summer vacations are a cherished part of student life. They offer a respite from the academic rigors and provide an opportunity for rejuvenation. This essay will delve into my summer vacation, which was a blend of relaxation, exploration, and self-improvement.

Planning is an integral part of any vacation. Given the freedom and time summer vacation affords, I ensured to strike a balance between relaxation, fun, and self-improvement. I allocated time for travel, reading, learning new skills, and spending time with family and friends. A well-crafted plan was crucial to make the most of my vacation.

Exploring New Destinations

Traveling is a passion of mine, and summer vacations provide the perfect opportunity to explore new destinations. This summer, I embarked on a journey to the scenic landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. The region’s natural beauty, comprising majestic mountains, lush forests, and serene coastlines, offered an enriching experience. It was not merely about sightseeing; it was a chance to immerse myself in diverse cultures and gain a broader perspective on life.

Learning and Self-Improvement

Summer vacations are not just for fun and relaxation; they also provide an opportunity for learning and self-improvement. This summer, I enrolled in an online course on data science, a field that has always intrigued me. This course not only expanded my knowledge horizons but also equipped me with a new skill set, making my vacation productive.

Relaxation and Recreation

While vacations are a time to learn and explore, they should also include ample relaxation. I dedicated a significant portion of my summer to leisure activities, such as reading novels, swimming, and gardening. These activities provided a mental break from the academic pressure and helped rejuvenate my mind.

Spending Time with Loved Ones

One of the most rewarding aspects of my summer vacation was the quality time I spent with my family and friends. We organized game nights, cooked meals together, and shared countless laughs. These moments strengthened our bond and created memories that will last a lifetime.

In conclusion, my summer vacation was a fulfilling blend of exploration, learning, relaxation, and bonding with loved ones. It was a period of personal growth, cultural enrichment, and mental rejuvenation. The experiences and skills I gained during this vacation have not just enriched my life but also prepared me for the academic year ahead. As students, we should strive to make our vacations not just enjoyable but also meaningful and productive.

My Favourite Season Summer Essay

We appreciate and savour many things during the summer. We like extended vacation time in the summer. We enjoy our time with our family and friends during the summer holidays. Here are a few sample essays on the topic ‘My Favourite Season Summer’.

100 Words Essay On My Favourite Season Summer

Summer is the hottest time of the year but it’s also one of my favourite seasons. Beginning of the summer ignites a sense of hope and opportunity for me and makes me feel like I can achieve all my goals. The days are longer, and the nights are shorter throughout the summer and gives you all the more time to work and play. The sun shines brightly, and the sky becomes clearer.

My Favourite Season Summer Essay

Fruits and vegetables come in a variety during the summer, I especially look forward to mangoes and lychees. Farmers also prepare their fields for agriculture during the summer months for different vegetables and fruits.

200 Words Essay On My Favourite Season Summer

India has a wide range of climatic conditions. The locals take pleasure in the qualities of the many seasons. Every season has its unique qualities. But summer is my favourite season among the other seasons and I eagerly anticipate its arrival. Typically, the summer season begins in April and lasts through June. Although summer is the hottest season, I adore it very much. We have long summer vacations throughout the season and many festive holidays, which is my favourite part about the summers.

Long Summer Vacation | We have a two-month summer break from school during summers and that is why I adore this season so much. During the summer break, we are free from the school's everyday activities and work. By letting go of the pressure of regular homework and studies, we can eat, sleep, and play with friends.

Fun Activities During The Evening | Summer is a great season to train for a variety of sports and competitions. Summertime brings an increase in outdoor activities. I'm always eager to play different sports and games in the evening, and I end up spending the majority of my time with my friends. I make it a point of taking part in different sports, clubs and hobbies including swimming and dancing and horse riding. I love the summertime.

500 Words Essay On My Favourite Season Summer

Summer is my favourite season. Everyone, including me, has a favourite time of year. Everyone has a break from school during summers, so we enjoy the long holidays. Another factor that makes summer my favourite season is that I get to taste cold beverages and delicious ice creams. During this season, we have access to a vast range of food items. We also have access to great mangoes during the summer. Mangoes are my favourite fruit.

Thus summers generally make me happier. We appreciate and savour many things during the summer. I enjoy my time with my family and friends during the summer holidays. We even take family vacations when we are all free and wish to escape the heat. Even if it's just a short trip, I look forward to them every year because I get to bond with my family members. I also love to participate in various summertime activities like summer camps, cycling, swimming, and more. Summers have always been my favourite season since they are so thrilling and full of possibilities.

The Specialty Of Summer Season

  • The days are long, and the nights are short throughout the summer. The days are bright and sunny. In the summer, we can completely unwind in the afternoon.

During the summer, the water parks are constantly crowded with visitors who want to cool off and have fun. In the summer, I enjoy swimming in the pools because it makes me feel liberated. Moreover, I get to consume various different cuisines during the summer.

Fresh cucumbers, enormous watermelons, delicious oranges, sweet guavas, nourishing muskmelons, and other fruits are available in the summer season.

Summer clothes that are so colourful and floral are undoubtedly another summertime specialty. To fully enjoy the summer, people like to dress in shorts, dresses, sleeveless shirts, and other items.

The summer months are crowded with people visiting the hill stations to escape the heat.

I, therefore, appreciate summer even more as a result of all these specialties. My relatives have a small farm within a few hours drive where we go every summer to spend time and taste the delicious fruits. They always serve the best mango juice, and I was amazed at how fresh the juice was and how it tasted so good. This also makes the summer season special. During summer vacation, I usually spend time with my family, and we all go to the garden and parks on the weekend for a picnic and take fresh air under trees.

But summer time is also quite dangerous since hot air blows during the day, which can also make us ill. People also became dehydrated. People can also suffer from burns to the skin. In the summer, all of the water in the reservoirs evaporates resulting in scarcity in some areas.

Nonetheless, summer is my favourite season because everything is so fantastic and vibrant. Even the fruits and vegetables we receive are so vibrantly coloured which is a sight to behold. Children who attend school appreciate the summer more since it gives them more time to play and unwind. The summers are pleasant, warm, and sunny.

The Ultimate Product Placement: Thailand on ‘The White Lotus’

Season 3 of the hit HBO series is being shot in the lush Southeast Asian country, which is betting financial incentives given to the production will pay off in increased tourism numbers.

A shot of a beach with a few people at water’s edge is framed by a palm tree with handpainted signs like “Relax,” “Sand” and Surf” nailed to it.

By Jessica Shaw

“Unforgettable experiences are in the making,” teases an Instagram post from Feb. 13 liked by more than 80,000 people. The photo offers a glimpse of an empty white-sand beach, azure waters, and the barely visible roofs of buildings immersed in a lush landscape of trees. “We are eager to welcome new guests to our resort in Thailand.”

Obscuring the view of the resort: a film clapboard emblazoned with a coral-colored flower logo and the words, “White Lotus Resort & Spa.”

White Lotus resorts, of course, exist only in the fictional world of HBO’s hit hospitality-and-bad-behavior series, “The White Lotus.” The post was HBO’s way of letting fans know that shooting had begun on the series’s third season.

For years it’s been clear that entertainment productions can be big business for locations, but “The White Lotus” has taken the trend to another level, spurring tourism with a show about tourism (at least on its surface), by publicly partnering with tourism. After two seasons, the biting and delectable social satire has an influence that far transcends its many golden statuettes and endless supply of memes. To the travel industry, it can turn a season’s region into an “it” destination, drawing international visitors to the White Lotus stand-ins (the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea in Season 1; the San Domenico Palace, Taormina, a Four Seasons Hotel in Season 2), not to mention the surrounding sights.

While Mike White, the show’s creator, was undoubtedly drawn by Thailand’s natural beauty and welcoming people, the Thai government also significantly sweetened the pot. The financial details have not been disclosed (HBO did not comment), but last year the Thai government approved a plan that increased the rebate for international productions to 150 million Thai baht (about $4.5 million) . Several months before that, the government announced that for five years it would waive the personal income tax it had been collecting from foreign talent. In other words, Season 3’s cast, which includes Leslie Bibb, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Monaghan, Parker Posey and returning Season 1 favorite, Natasha Rothwell, will not have to pay Thailand to work in Thailand.

What’s at stake for Thailand is clear: pre-Covid, the country was making 3.5 billion Thai baht per year from international productions. After falling during the height of the pandemic, that number hit 6.6 billion baht last year, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Considering the potential windfall during filming and long after, it’s understandable that the country would court Mr. White and his production.

A spokesperson for the Tourism Authority would not give specifics, but wrote in an email, “It had been brought to our attention that ‘The White Lotus’ team was exploring the filming of Season 3 in Asia and therefore we reached out to them to assist with potential hotels to film/stay, possible airline sponsorships and other production support to bring some of their budget costs down to allow Thailand to be more competitive.”

The strategy has already started to pay off: Since the official announcement, searches for Thailand have already jumped 50 percent on Expedia, the online travel agency.

“It’s another form of product placement,” said Jon Gieselman, president of Expedia brands. In this case, however, the product is an entire country. “It only makes sense that a studio and destination would cut a deal and in exchange get some promotion.”

How ‘White Lotus’ Took Off

“The White Lotus” was born out of necessity. HBO approached Mr. White during the early pandemic months of 2020 and asked if he had written anything that could be shot quickly and under strict Covid restrictions. He told them his idea to film a limited series set in a hotel, and by fall was in production on what he hoped would feel like, as he later told Vanity Fair, “a tropical anxiety attack.”

The series may have cleverly skewered some of the ugliest parts of humanity — privilege, racism, sexism — but, oh, the view. Online interest in the Four Seasons Resort Maui jumped by 425 percent after Season 1 ran, according to the property.

Season 2 offered a new slew of eye-catching locations in Sicily, whether on a yacht in the Mediterranean with some (spoiler alert) murderous “high-end gays,” or in a fresco-filled villa in Palermo. Following the October 2022 premiere, Expedia noted a 300 percent jump in online searches for Sicily.

For Marc Speichert, executive vice president and chief commercial officer of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, partnering with the production has been a lucrative no-brainer.

“Following their roles as the backdrop in ‘The White Lotus,’ both Four Seasons hotels in Maui and Taormina experienced jumps in website visits, availability checks as well as enhanced brand and property awareness; ultimately driving more bookings,” he said in an emailed statement. The Taormina hotel was almost completely sold out for the summer 2023 season, he added.

The Covid rebound

Just how much Thailand’s economy relies on tourism was made clear in the fall of 2021, when the Ministry of Tourism & Sports released dire pandemic-impacted numbers. The number of passengers on international flights to the country had fallen by 95 percent and hotels were only 9 percent occupied. Visitor numbers dropped to 510,000 in 2021 from nearly 40 million two years earlier.

Last year, the country welcomed 28 million visitors, well below 2019’s high. In December, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin met with his tourism ministers to encourage them to draw more foreign tourists year-round , according to the Thai press, telling them, “I want foreign tourists to stay longer and spend more.”

In the zero-sum world of tourism, Thailand’s “White Lotus” gain was another country’s loss. Last fall at the Tokyo Film Festival, during a session on how to attract productions to film in Japan, Georgina Pope, a producer who works in the country, told a story about accompanying a “high profile” showrunner and production team on a scouting trip in Japan, the Hollywood trade publication Deadline reported.

She said conversations about shooting in Japan ended when the showrunner — whom Deadline identified as Mr. White — and team were informed that “the Thai government had just announced a renewal and improvement on their film incentive system,” she said, adding that “for their project, that meant $4.4 million alone.”

But which Thai property would stand in for the titular White Lotus? Sleuths quickly noted the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui was sold out during February and March, when the series would be filming. The Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas has also been reported to be a location. Needless to say, both properties offer a spectacularly stunning array of plunge pools, outdoor showers and postcard-worthy vistas that could make a director of photography drool. Neither Four Seasons nor Anantara would say whether their hotels were involved; Mr. White did not return a request for comment.

Set-jetting in overdrive

The New York Post journalist Gretchen Kelly used the term “set-jetting” in 2007, referring to touring the locations of the movies “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Babel.” Since then, there have been enough fans and fortune to go around the globe. According to one study from the University of Zadar, “Game of Thrones” contributed $200 million to Croatia’s economy between 2013 and 2018. New Zealand saw a 50 percent increase in inbound tourism after the success of “The Lord of the Rings,” though it is hard to tease out how much of that is because of the movie. Albuquerque, N.M., mayor Tim Keller wrote on his Instagram in 2022 that “Breaking Bad” had “over $385 million in economic impact.” No wonder the city erected statues of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman.

When international borders closed in 2020, the set-jetting spigot ran dry. Going abroad was done from home, with a screen serving as a sad stand-in for a passport. The closest a fan might get to the Scottish Highlands would be binge watching “Outlander.” The only way to make it into a national park was by way of “Yellowstone.”

By the time Covid restrictions were lifted and the homebound could finally fulfill their pandemic travel fantasies, set-jetting had become one of the primary factors in picking a destination.

A TripIt survey released earlier this month showed that nearly twice as many American travelers plan on taking pop culture-related trips this year than they did in 2023. And according to an American Express study released last year, 70 percent of Gen Z and millennials said that they have been inspired to visit a location based on something they saw onscreen.

It’s a demographic statistic that didn’t go unnoticed by Four Seasons, a chain not known for catering to the 40s-and-under set. “Gen Z and millennials are certainly a target for our brand, as they represent the next generation of luxury travelers,” said Mr. Speichert. “Over the next five years, we anticipate a significant wealth transfer of approximately $68 trillion from baby boomers to millennials, accompanied by a 50 percent increase in High-Net-Worth individuals.”

Not that Thailand’s Tourism Authority is expecting every set-jetter to be able to afford a Four Seasons stay. After all, Season 2’s cobblestone Sicilian streets were as coveted as the hotel’s piano bar. And Thailand’s Tourism Authority is hoping to showcase more than luxury properties. Earlier this month, HBO announced that the Thai singer Lalisa “Lisa” Manobal, of the South Korean K-pop group Blackpink, will make her acting debut in the series.

“The show will undoubtedly generate great awareness for Thailand,” said the Thai Tourism Authority’s spokesperson in an emailed statement. “‘The White Lotus’ will certainly strengthen the kingdom’s status as a preferred filming destination and a beacon of experience-based tourism, inspiring even more filmmakers to consider filming in Amazing Thailand.”

We moved from the suburbs to our vacation home. I save at least 10 hours a week not commuting, and my kids have a happy, outdoorsy life.

  • Jason Fell purchased a vacation home in 2020 and made it his primary residence soon after.
  • His commute time went from at least an hour each way to zero, and he has more time with his kids.
  • Fell, who said his family loves spending time outside, has no regrets about leaving the suburbs.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Jason Fell, a vice president of Entrepreneur magazine whose work has appeared on BI , about his exper i ence moving from an NYC suburb called Midland Park, New Jersey, to Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains. Fell preferred to keep his specific location within the Poconos private. The conversation was edited for length and clarity.

We weren't necessarily thinking of moving. It was really the pandemic that changed everything.

We figured, why not have a little place to go in the summers — and even sometimes in the winter — to just get away and get the kids out of the suburbs and get some fresh air? The idea would be to be here during the spring, summer, and fall as often as we could and wanted to.

My wife and I are very much outdoorsy people. We like hiking, we like kayaking. The Poconos has all that to offer.

We bought this house in September of 2020.

We never intended to live in the Poconos. If I was commuting into the city, I wouldn't really be here during the week. But once I didn't have to make that commute, we just threw it out there almost as a joke: "Would you ever consider it?" "Well, we really do love it out there."

We basically converted a lake vacation home into a full-time home.

Having green grass and tall trees and lakes and waterfalls and fresh air — that just makes our hearts happy, my wife and I.

And then seeing our kids have so much fun and enjoy themselves so much when they're outside. It's obvious, to me at least, that their quality of life is so much better growing up here than growing up there.

It feels like this very blessed, very welcome hybrid — everyday reality blended with vacation .

We've got this little bubble of peace, which, again, we're not on vacation, we're just home. But it really does wonders for your mental health — at least ours.

I don't have any regrets. I really don't.

My long commute could lead to 12-hour days

A lot of people wind up in Bergen County when they want a house, they want a little bit of property, but they also need that proximity to New York.

I lived a block and a half away from a bus stop, so I took the bus into New York City every day. If you got in your car and there was no traffic, it would probably be about a 30-minute drive. But as you can imagine, commuting during rush hour is a completely different sort.

Thankfully there weren't too many stops on the bus. But factoring in having to make some stops, and then the traffic each way, it was at least a little over an hour on the good days. But God forbid there was an accident on the highway, or there was bad weather like snow.

I was getting on a bus by 7:30 a.m. I used to have to try my hardest to get on a bus that was leaving Port Authority just after 5 p.m., sometimes running from the office. If I didn't take that bus, or maybe the bus after, the rush-hour congestion was so bad I wouldn't be home until after 7 p.m. So that's a 12-hour day .

And even if I caught that early bus and there was no traffic, I would be home by 6:20 p.m. When you have young kids, 7 p.m. was bedtime.

We're saving on property taxes and were able to renovate

When we bought the Poconos house as a vacation house, we paid cash, so there's no mortgage. We purchased the house for $150,000, roughly.

We purchased the Midland Park house in 2014 for about $465,000, and then sold it in February of 2021 for $600,000.

One thing about New Jersey is it's a little bit expensive. Taxes are quite high. I was paying about $12,000 or $13,000 in property taxes . Here in Pennsylvania, it's closer to $3,000.

We got out here and then, after a little while, we got pregnant with our second child.

We needed to do some work to the house because the family is expanding. There's not enough room. So we did some construction , too.

It was just over 1,000 square feet, and it was a two-bedroom. We almost doubled the livable square footage — I think we're at somewhere like 1,800 or 1,900 square feet. Now it's three bedrooms.

I get to spend more time with my family

I got very lucky in the sense that after I got the blessing from my boss to move, so to speak, my company not only went remote, they got rid of the offices. There's no office to go back to.

My daughter was born in February of 2020, and then I was off for paternity leave, and then everybody just basically stayed home after that. So I haven't missed a beat.

We've had a second kid, and I'm here for everything. It's so great.

When working from home , you definitely have chores — you get stuff done throughout the day. But whenever you call it quits for work, you're already home. You can enjoy yourself or your family or whatever is going on.

One thing that some people might complain about — and you can imagine it, because you're relocating from the suburbs outside of New York City to a rural area — is that things are not close.

There aren't many options for quality healthcare out here. My wife and I have a doctor nearby, but apparently she is one of only a couple of good doctors in the area. For my kids, we have to drive 45 minutes for a good pediatric dentist, and 45 minutes in the opposite direction into NJ for their pediatrician. People we've spoken to say there aren't any good hospitals out here, you have to go to NJ. And many people we know still travel all the way to NYC to see their doctors.

When I lived in Midland Park, I could literally walk out of my front door, walk a couple blocks, and be at a couple of neighborhood restaurants, a bar, some stores. I can't do that here.

But instead, I walk half a block and I'm at a beach on a lake. So that's pretty cool.

My family loves the outdoors

We've 1,000% increased our outdoor time . That being said, I still have to work, even though I'm working from home. I'm not out hiking every day.

When the weather's nice, these kids, whether they're playing sports, or seeing friends, they're always outside. They're swimming at the beach, kayaking on the lake, and coming with us on hikes. They would much rather be outside than inside.

We try to go kayaking as often as we can. We've got a couple of kayaks and we live right on a lake, so it's like, you got it, you have to do it.

We just immersed ourselves in it.

Everyone's situations are different and everyone's priorities are different. Having that separation from the real world versus vacation world — I guess some people can see value in that.

It's not like we moved into our vacation home and that's it — we still go on vacation. We still get out to other places. It's not like we're stuck in this particular vacation land.

I think if you have an opportunity to relocate or situate yourself somewhere that is going to enable you to pursue your professional career or aspirations while inspiring you and really making your heart happy , then you should really give some consideration to making that happen. If it makes sense for you, financially and logistically.

You either look out your window and see your neighbors in their aboveground pool, 20 feet away from your house, or you look outside and you see thousands of trees and the view of the lake through the trees.

I prefer the trees.
