How are letters and essays evaluated?

Although there is no set criteria according to which the descriptive section paper is evaluated, there are some common things that are examined by the evaluator. For most banking exams, the descriptive section is evaluated manually.

Content:  The examiner would see whether aspects of the topic have been addressed in the essay and if provided details, examples and explanations are appropriately supporting the candidate’s point of view.

Descriptive writing Guide is Here! Read More

Formal Requirement:  As the paper is descriptive in nature there are certain requirements that must be fulfilled by the answers. For letters, the format must be strictly adhered to. Although extra marks might not be awarded for the format/ structure, an absence of it might cause a reduction in your marks. For letter writing, stick to the prescribed formats of formal and informal letters. For essays, make sure the word limit (if any) is not exceeded. Also, make sure that the essay is in paragraph form.

Development, Structure and Coherence:  How well the topic has been understood and explained is the main criteria for evaluating any piece of descriptive writing. The examiner sees whether there are any examples given, what is the range of thoughts/ ideas presented and how logically they are penned down. The following might be the few things an examiner is looking for in your piece of writing:-

  • Does each paragraph contain just one idea or concept?
  • Does the evidence support the writer’s argument?
  • Does this paper have a beginning (introduction), a middle (body), and an end (conclusion)?

Grammar:  This is also a very important criterion. An essay may be logically presented, it may have a variety of ideas, but if the grammar is bad, it makes the entire essay ‘not so good’. Examiners don’t expect complex sentences. Just make sure you create correct and straightforward sentence structures and convey your thoughts effectively.

  • Does this paper have proper punctuation?
  • Does the author provide complete sentences?
  • Does this paper have consistent verb tense, voice, and third-person usage? (essays are generally written in the third person)

Vocabulary & Spelling:  Again we would like to clarify that a test taker is not expected to use “high – fi” English words. As long as you have the right word for an idea, that’s good. A simple example of this would be:

  • If you want to say “very good”, say “excellent”.

Also, avoid spelling mistakes as they point to a careless attitude.

Here, we would like to mention one important thing: Time Management. Make sure you divide your time as per the weightage of the question. Since an essay has higher marks, allot more time to it.

How to Excel in the SBI PO Descriptive Paper: Expert Advice

essay writing format for sbi po exam

The State Bank of India (SBI) Probationary Officer (PO) exam is one of India’s most sought-after banking exams. It comprises two main stages: the Preliminary and Main exams. While the Preliminary exam tests your aptitude and reasoning skills, the Main exam assesses your comprehensive abilities, including a Descriptive Paper. Excelling in the SBI PO Descriptive Paper is crucial, significantly determining your final selection. This article will provide expert advice on excelling in the paper.

Know the Format

Before diving into the tips, let’s briefly understand the format of the paper. This exam consists of two sections: an essay-writing section and a letter-writing section. Each section carries a specific weightage in terms of marks. Typically, you are given 30 minutes to complete both sections, and the total marks allocated for the Descriptive exam are 50.

Essay Writing Tips

The essay writing section evaluates your ability to express your thoughts coherently and logically. Here are some expert tips to ace this section:

Choose Relevant Topics

Prioritize current and relevant topics for your essay. Scan newspapers, magazines, and online sources to stay updated on current affairs and trending issues. This will help you select appropriate topics for your essays.

Structured Approach

Begin your essay with a well-structured introduction, followed by the main body, and conclude with a crisp conclusion.

Vocabulary and Language

Use a wide range of vocabulary and maintain a formal tone throughout your essay. Avoid using jargon or overly complex language. Clear and concise expression is key.

Proofreading

Allocate some time for proofreading at the end. Check for grammatical and punctuation mistakes, and ensure your essay is free from typos.

Letter Writing Tips

The letter-writing section evaluates your ability to convey information effectively. Here are some expert tips to excel in this section:

Appropriate Tone

Choose the proper tone for your letter, whether formal , informal, or semi-formal. The tone should match the context of the letter.

Clear Structure

Maintain a clear structure in your letter, including the date, recipient’s address, salutation, body, and closing remarks. Ensure that your letter is well-organized.

Addressing the Recipient

Pay attention to how you address the recipient. Use proper titles and names where necessary. If unsure about the recipient’s name, use a generic salutation like “Dear Sir/Madam.”

Conciseness

Keep your letter concise and to the point. Avoid unnecessary details and digressions. State the purpose of the letter clearly and provide any required information succinctly.

Practice Makes Perfect

The key to excelling in the exam is practice. Regularly practice essay and letter writing on various topics. Set a timer to simulate exam conditions and work on improving your speed and accuracy.

Mock Tests and Evaluation

Take advantage of mock tests and evaluation services available online. Many coaching institutes offer mock tests for practice. Additionally, some platforms provide evaluation services where experts assess your essays and provide feedback. This can be immensely helpful in identifying your strengths and areas for improvement.

Time Management

Time management is critical in the SBI PO Descriptive Paper. Since you have only 30 minutes to complete the essay and the letter, allocating your time wisely is essential. Experts recommend spending approximately 15-20 minutes on the essay and the remaining time on the letter. Stick to this schedule to ensure you complete both sections within the given time frame.

Continuous Learning

Finally, keep learning and improving your writing skills. Read books, articles, and essays to enhance your vocabulary and writing style. Seek feedback from teachers, mentors, or peers to refine your writing further. Continuous learning is a crucial element in mastering the descriptive exam.

In conclusion, excelling in the SBI PO Descriptive Paper requires knowledge, practice, and effective time management. By understanding the format, following expert tips for essay and letter writing, and consistently practicing, you can increase your chances of success in this crucial stage of the SBI PO test.

Acing SBI PO Descriptive Writing: Essential Techniques Revealed

The Descriptive Writing section of the State Bank of India Probationary Officer (SBI PO) examination is a critical phase that requires candidates to demonstrate their writing skills, clarity of thought, and effective communication within a limited time frame. To ace this section, one must employ essential techniques that not only meet the criteria set by the examiners but also showcase a candidate’s ability to craft compelling essays and letters. In this study guide, we’ll unveil the key techniques to master Descriptive Writing and increase your chances of success in the SBI PO exam.

Understanding the SBI PO Descriptive Writing Section:

The Descriptive Writing section typically consists of two parts – essay writing and letter writing. Candidates are evaluated on their ability to present ideas coherently, organize thoughts logically, and communicate effectively. Let’s delve into essential techniques to enhance your performance in each component.

**1. Topic Analysis and Planning:

Before diving into writing, carefully analyze the given topic. Understand its key components, identify the central theme, and brainstorm ideas. Create a brief outline or structure for your essay or letter. Planning is crucial; it helps in organizing your thoughts, ensuring a coherent flow, and preventing the essay from becoming disjointed.

**2. Clear and Concise Expression:

Clarity is the hallmark of effective communication. Express your ideas in a clear and concise manner. Avoid unnecessary complexity, jargon, or overly lengthy sentences. Each sentence should contribute to the overall clarity of your writing. Simple yet impactful language is often more compelling.

**3. Introduction that Captures Attention:

Craft a compelling introduction that immediately captures the examiner’s attention. Start with a hook – it could be a striking fact, a relevant quote, or a thought-provoking question. Clearly state your thesis or the main point you will be addressing. An engaging introduction sets a positive tone for the rest of your essay or letter.

**4. Structured Body Paragraphs:

The body of your essay should consist of well-structured paragraphs, each focusing on a specific point or argument. Present your ideas in a logical sequence, using supporting evidence or examples. Ensure a smooth transition between paragraphs to maintain coherence. A structured body enhances the readability of your writing.

**5. Effective Argumentation:

For essays, effective argumentation is key. Clearly present your main arguments and support them with relevant examples, facts, or data. Anticipate counterarguments and address them, demonstrating a thorough understanding of the topic. Strong and persuasive arguments contribute to the overall impact of your essay.

**6. Strategic Use of Language:

Choose your words strategically to convey your ideas precisely. Utilize a varied and sophisticated vocabulary to add depth to your writing. However, strike a balance – avoid using complex language if it compromises clarity. The strategic use of language reflects a command over communication.

**7. Conclusion that Leaves an Impression:

Craft a conclusion that summarizes your main points and reinforces your thesis. Avoid introducing new ideas in the conclusion. Instead, provide a concise summary that leaves a lasting impression on the reader. A strong conclusion contributes to the overall coherence and impact of your writing.

**8. Letter Writing Format and Politeness:

For the letter-writing component, familiarize yourself with the format of formal and informal letters. Pay attention to details such as salutations, subject lines, and complimentary closings. Maintain a polite and respectful tone throughout the letter, reflecting professionalism.

**9. Time Management:

Effective time management is critical in the SBI PO Descriptive Writing section. Allocate specific time for planning, writing, and reviewing. Practice writing under timed conditions to enhance your speed and ensure you can complete both the essay and letter within the given time frame.

**10. Proofreading and Revision:

After completing your essay or letter, take the time to proofread and revise. Look for grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and areas where you can improve clarity. Revision is a crucial step to ensure the polished quality of your writing.

In conclusion, acing the SBI PO Descriptive Writing section requires a combination of planning, effective expression, and strategic use of language. By incorporating these essential techniques into your preparation routine, you’ll be well-equipped to present compelling essays and letters that stand out in the competitive landscape of the SBI PO exam. Remember, practice and a thoughtful approach are key to achieving excellence in descriptive writing.
