IELTS Essay Topics

ideas for ielts essay topics vk

Most people doing IELTS Writing Task 2 get stressed out about which IELTS essay topics they will face. They worry about getting an unfamiliar topic and not having any good ideas or enough vocabulary to complete the task.

This article will help you by giving you the most common IELTS essay topics  and showing you how to use these to get higher scores.

Why is it important to know the IELTS essay topics?

If you are familiar with the most common topics you will have a huge advantage because you will be better at two of the most important things:

  • Thinking of relevant ideas

Idea Generation

Of all the things people worry about when doing Task 2 , not having enough ideas to complete the essay is normally top of the list. However, you should remember that IELTS is not a test of your knowledge, it is a test of your English. The examiners do not expect you to be an expert on the essay topic, they just want you to show that you can write clearly and persuasively in English.

You should also realise that IELTS is a global exam and when the writers of the exam are making the questions, their main concern is writing questions that can be understood by nearly everyone in the world. For example, common IELTS essay topics are education, crime and health. Everyone in the world has an opinion on these everyday topics and you need to understand that the examiners are not looking for the ‘best’ ideas, they are just looking for relevant ideas.

Let’s look at an example question on the topic of international aid:

Rich countries should help poorer countries when they suffer natural disasters. Do you agree?

You don’t have to think of the ‘best’ ideas, you just have to think of two ideas that are relevant to this question. Reasons why rich countries should help are:

  • It is the morally correct thing to do.
  • They have legal obligations under international law.
  • Not helping will result in many deaths and suffering.
  • They have more than enough money to do this.
  • It is in their interests to do so for the peace and security of the world.
  • Some of their own people might be involved in the disaster.
  • Every rich country has a fund for disaster relief within their budget.
  • They might suffer a disaster one day too and need help from the international community.

You obviously do not need to think of this many ideas and some of the ideas are better than others, but the point I am trying to make is that there are lots of ‘relevant’ ideas you could think of.

Despite this, you will obviously be more confident and be able to think of ideas more quickly if you are familiar with the common topics. Below I will show you how you can use the common IELTS essay topics to learn about the general topics and improve your English at the same time.

25% of your marks come from vocabulary and this is directly linked to IELTS essay topics. One of the main ways the examiner will judge your vocabulary is something called ‘topic-specific vocabulary’. The idea is that someone with a wide-ranging vocabulary should be able to talk about any of the common essay topics easily using words that are specific to that topic.

For example, if the question was the same as above, you would be expected to use words like ‘international aid’, ‘wealthy’, ‘developed’, ‘developing’, ‘earthquake’, ‘hurricane’, ‘relief fund’, ‘obligation’, ‘moral’ etc. These are words that you use specifically to talk about the essay topic. You don’t have to use these words, but they would help.

Therefore, the more familiar you are with the topic, the more ‘topic-specific’ vocabulary you will know and the higher your score will be. Knowing the most common IELTS essay topics allows you to focus on the most important vocabulary . Below I will show you the most common topics and some of the more important words you should know.

Are IELTS essay topics predictable?

Yes and no. You will obviously not be able to predict the exact topic that will come up. There are just too many to do this and it would be a very easy test if you knew what the exact topic was going to be.

However, there are between 10 common topics that come up more than others. You should focus on these first, especially if you don’t have much time before the test.

The most common IELTS essay topics are:

  • Environment
  • International Development
  • Globalisation
  • Public Transport
  • Criminal Justice
  • Youth Crime
  • Government Spending
  • Traditional Culture

I think that technology, health, education and the environment are the most important topics and will feature regularly in the future.

For more information on the most common topics, please visit my most common topics page .

How can I use the most common topics?

There are two main ways you can use the most common IELTS essay topics to your advantage. The first is to familiarise yourself with them while practising and improving your English and the second is to focus on topic-specific vocabulary.

Common Topic Familiarisation

If you are going to do well in the IELTS test you need to be using and exposing yourself to English every day. You should be reading, listening, writing and speaking in English as much as possible. You should make sure that if you are listening to or reading something in English you do it within the common topics. For example, you could listen to a podcast on technology one day and then read a newspaper report about education or health the next day. Most of the questions are on current topics, therefore staying up to date with what is happening in the world will really help you think of ideas.

For example, three of the biggest news stories of 2015 were the refugee crisis, terrorism and internet privacy issues. These topics have, unsurprisingly, already appeared on the IELTS writing paper this year.

Please check out my 25 online language learning tools for lots of ways you can study within the common topics at home for free.

If you really want to get advanced, you could also try making up your own questions based on the news of the day and then give these questions to a study partner. This is something that I do with my classes. They go to a popular news site like the BBC and write a Task 2 question based on one of the stories they were reading about and then they give it to a classmate who does the essay for homework.

Vocabulary – Notebook

There are two things you can do here: start a vocabulary notebook and focus on key topic-specific vocabulary.

As mentioned above, you should be listening to and reading English as much as possible before your test. This will not only improve your listening and reading skills but will, more importantly, expand your vocabulary.

When you are reading or listening you will always notice words that you don’t know. Most students simply look these up immediately in the dictionary and then forget about them. I think this is a total waste of time because the words do not stay in your head and you never use them again. A much better thing to do is to start a vocabulary notebook. This is the single most effective way to improve your vocabulary. Follow the steps below:

  • Buy a notebook that you will only use for vocabulary.
  • When you see or hear a new word try to guess the meaning from the context of the sentence or paragraph. This step is very important because it is an essential skill to develop and will help you remember the words.
  • Check the meaning after you have guessed it in the dictionary.
  • Note the new word and the definition in your vocabulary notebook.
  • Pronunciation
  • Review the list of words and test yourself on these words after one week, two weeks, one month and two months. Soon you will have expanded your vocabulary dramatically.

You can also do this by using apps like Memrise  to record and review vocabulary.

Vocabulary- Topic Specific Words

As mentioned above, one of the ways in which the examiner judges your vocabulary is how many topic-specific words you use. Learning these words before the exam for the most common essay topics should help you get a higher vocabulary score.

However, one of the worst things you could do is simply learn a list of words and insert them into your essay. This is not how good vocabulary works and the examiners are trained to spot this. Your focus should always be on accuracy i.e. using words correctly. Because of this I advise my students to use the 100% rule.

You should never use any word or phrase in IELTS essays if you are not 100% sure about it. By 100% I mean that you are sure about its:

  • Collocations

If you are not 100% sure about the things above, then do not use it. If you do, you will probably get it wrong and this will lower your band score.

Brainstorming Essay Topics for IELTS Writing Task 2

IELTS Task 2 Writing - image by Magoosh

One of the most common mistakes students make when approaching their IELTS Task 2 Writing test is to just start writing. If you start to write before you think about what you are going to say, your essay may be incoherent and irrelevant—and your band score will suffer. The best way to fix this? Brainstorm IELTS Writing Task 2 topics before you write! In this post, we’ll take a look at how you can come up with essay topics for a variety of IELTS Task 2 Question Types to create the most coherent and relevant opinion essays possible.

Getting Started with IELTS Task 2 Essay Topics

Remember: on IELTS Academic Task 2 and the IELTS General Training Task 2, you’ll be writing a formal essay about an important issue facing the modern world or affective people’s lives. You won’t have outside resources with which to research the topic, so you’ll be relying on your own opinion. Because of this, factual accuracy is less important than the overall main ideas, cohesion, vocabulary (complexity, synonyms), and grammatical range (complex sentences) you show in your essay.

The biggest problem when students don’t brainstorm in IELTS essay writing is that it can make their essay choppy and off-topic. Together, coherence and relevance make up 50% of your score on the essay ! (Vocabulary/lexical resource and grammar are the other 50%.) Therefore, it is 100% essential that you spend 3 to 5 minutes planning your IELTS Task 2 writing —before you begin writing.

As the bulk of your points will be picked up in your two body paragraphs, I recommend that you start your essay by first brainstorming what ideas you will write about and what relevant examples you will include to back up your own knowledge. Let’s look at how to do this in IELTS writing Task 2 . First, here’s the overall process that you’ll use.

  • Understand the type of question being asked.
  • Brainstorm ideas.
  • Choose an idea/ideas.
  • Take short notes about your ideas.
  • Start writing!

With that in mind, let’s look at each of these steps in greater detail.

Step-by-Step Guide to Brainstorming IELTS Writing Task 2

Step 1: understand the type of question being asked..

In another post, we examined the 5 main types of questions that you might see in the IELTS exam. Classifying IELTS questions into one of these categories according to common topics will help you make sure that you are answering the task response correctly. Look at the example Task 2 question below. How would you classify it?

Write at least 250 words.

This is a Problem + Solution question type, so keep that in mind as you start to brainstorm!

Step 2: Brainstorm ideas.

Let your mind wander for 30 to 60 seconds with all the possible ideas that instantly come to your mind. There is no need to make notes here, just mentally explore as many ideas as possible. These can be the negative effects or a negative impact of the problem, with a solution about how to avoid negative development of the situation—or they can be a positive suggestion, coming up with better ways to address the issue through a more positive development of the topic.

As you’ll see, these are the same types of ideas, just framed differently. The main point? Be sure you come up with examples in response to the direct questions the prompt is asking you.

Below, I have written out some of the thoughts and IELTS Writing Task 2 topics that initially came to my mind when I read the questions above.

Q2: Use unoccupied housing for other purposes; limit rent prices; government support for the poor; tax breaks for charging less rent; workers telecommute/live outside city

Step 3: Choose the idea.

Whilst brainstorming ideas, several ideas should come to your head. You need to choose one for each question you need to answer. However, before you decide to go with an idea, ask yourself these questions:

  • Does my idea relate exactly to the question?
  • Can I explain this idea with reasons and examples? (It is better to choose an idea that you can explain clearly over your best idea.)
  • Is it a simple idea? (You have limited time and words to explain your idea. If the idea is too complex you will not be able to develop it fully and this will cost you points! A simple idea can still impress the examiner as long as you develop it well and provide relevant reasons and examples.)

Step 4: Write down short notes around your chosen ideas.

In the ‘Problem + Solution’ type question in IELTS Task 2 writing, there are usually two questions that need to be answered. You must first come up with an idea that answers the first question, and then provide an example that backs up that idea. Then you must come up with an idea for the second question and provide and example that backs up the second idea. Below are the ideas I went with and the examples I created on the above IELTS writing Task 2 question.

Q2: Limit rent prices, government support for poor Reason: Rent limits = more affordable hosing, support for poor = poor have more money for living/rent Example: Food subsidy = less money spent on food = more money for housing

Step 5: Start writing!

Now that you have the main ideas confirmed, your essay is practically written. The Q1 and Q2 notes can form two body paragraphs! And you can have a similar two body paragraph outline for other question types. For Advantage/disadvantage, for instance, you might have one body paragraph for advantages and one for disadvantages.

Just follow this simple formula for constructing your essay and you will complete Task 2 within 40 minutes. And to see how this formula worked for a full essay based on the outline above, check out a full sample response based on the question and notes above . I would also encourage you to look at similarly structured responses for common IELTS Writing Task 2 question types .

Again, brainstorming and prewriting a brief outline serve as the foundation for all of those model essays. Brainstorming may seem like a lot of work to start, but trust me, by brainstorming and planning your ideas first, you will save time and energy in the long run. By building this strong foundation, your essays will actually become easier to write, and you’ll be able to write them more quickly!

IELTS Essay Topics with Answers: Let’s Practice!

Practice makes perfect! Work with a variety of essay topics for IELTS to brainstorm the types of ideas that would best answer the questions. Here are just a few IELTS writing topics with answers (IELTS Academic) to get you started!

  • Advantage/Disadvantage Essay
  • Two-Part Question Essay
  • Discussion Essay
  • Agree/Disagree Essay
  • You may wish to write your own response for each topic before you read the sample essay/model answers.

A Final Word on IELTS Task 2 Topics

The more you practice English writing topics for the IELTS, the easier it will be to brainstorm and find essay topics for IELTS! This will take a lot of the pressure and stress off of you as you focus on IELTS essay questions.

As you practice, keep in mind that you should stick to one idea and one example per paragraph! On the IELTS test, too many ideas and examples complicate your essay. By separating your IELTS Writing Task 2 topics into a clear, efficient organizational structure, you’ll show the IELTS examiners exactly how great your ideas actually are!

How get eassly 6 band in ielts .when you have only one month time only.

Magoosh Expert

That depends a lot on what your current IELTS performance is. Your exact one-month study plan should focus on your weaknesses while building on your strengths.

It definitely is possible to get a good score on the IELTS in a month though, and many students have gotten a 6 or higher with just one month of study. Here on the blog, we have a few posts about one month IELTS study plans. See Kuangyan’s weekly IELTS study template , and her general advice for one month of IELTS study .

I’m afraid that we can’t provide any more advice than what we already wrote in this blog post. I recommend that you read it carefully and take a look at some of the earlier comments before you make any decisions 🙂

There’s no simple answer to that question, Seerat. After all, the best way to improve depends on your own strengths and weaknesses in IELTS Writing Task 2. Fortunately, Magoosh now offers a complete guide to IELTS Writing Task 2 . That guide should have some tips that will work for you personally as you boost your IELTS score by a half-band. 🙂

I’m wondering, if “one idea and one example per paragraph” is enough, and you could lose points for that?

I often see in most blogs or essay examples, they suggest to provide a few ideas and examples per paragraph.

Also, could I generally stick to this template ( https://magoosh.com/ielts/the-best-ielts-task-2-writing-template/ ) EVERY TIME and for ALL type of task 2 questions for a 8+ score?

By the way, I enjoyed reading this blog, very nice work!

I generally do recommend sticking to one idea and one supporting detail per paragraph, because it keeps the essay simple. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the essay will have fewer ideas and details. It can simply mean that the essay has more paragraphs, since each paragraph can only have one idea and one detail.

If you want to write more complex paragraphs, that’s certainly alright… provided you can do a good job writing them. Use more complicate paragraphs carefully, as they are– of course– a bit more difficult to write.

Hi Gwendolyn, thank you for helping out all those who are aspiring to take IELTS exam. I would appreciate if you could please give feedback on below attempt for writing task 2. Thank you in advance 🙂

“Prevention is better than cure”. Researching and treating diseases is too costly so it would be better to invest in preventative measures. To what extent do you agree?

“It is better to be safe than sorry”, treatment of diseases is not affordable in today’s world, rather being precautious and opting for spending on measures to stay healthy is ideal option. In my opinion, it is important to maintain good health than spending on expensive treatments later on. Though, we cannot ignore the importance of science and research to cure deadly diseases. For instance, tuberculosis, heart attack, kidney transplant etcetera. People suffering from above mentioned diseases can only be saved by the access of medical science, surely the treatment is expensive, but when it comes to life, nothing is too pricey. However, cost involved in taking preventative measures is much cheaper than curing the disease. To illustrate, diseases like malaria, dengue, typhoid are very easy to catch, especially, in rainy season. Curing such diseases is not affordable, it is therefore, best to invest in precautionate devices such as mosquito killing machines, maintaining hygiene in and around house, wearing clothes to cover body areas that are prone to mosquito bites. Furthermore, the pain of treatment and the side effects of medications is far more adverse. For instance, treating an ankle that got fractured in the gym is more painful than wearing personal protective equipment during exercise, which could avoid such injuries, so it makes more sense to invest in ppe than to pay for treating injuries, which occur due to failure of taking prevention. To conclude, I agree that being cautious about our health and well-being is very important but the progress made by science and research in treating serious illness is invaluable too. People should enforce safety, to keep healthy, or else, they have no option but to go for dearer treatments which don’t come without side effects.

How you can improve in IELTS Reading depends a lot on your current Reading challenges. Fortunately, Magoosh has a Complete Guide to IELTS Reading that should help you with any challenge you’re facing. 🙂

Thanks for this helpful content. I have a question and I’ll appreciate if you can make it clear for me.

Can I explain more than one idea for each question? For example and for this sample question I have 2 ideas around the questions (lack of exercising and eating junk food).

Is it possible to explain both ideas for each question or I have to choose only one of these ideas?

You can certainly have more than one idea for the question. You can write 2 different body paragraphs explaining your examples. 🙂 Having more support for your viewpoint on the Task 2 essay can make your essay stronger. With that said, you should make sure that both of your ideas address the prompt and are very clear for the reader/grader to understand.

I secured S 7, L 6, W 6, R 5.5, I need 6 in Reading. Should I fill rechecking form ?

Hi Shefali,

There are usually no changes to the reading score even after a re-score. So, it’d probably be a better use of your time to retake the exam than request a re-score of the Reading section.

How to Think of Ideas for IELTS Writing Task 2

Posted by David S. Wills | Oct 31, 2018 | IELTS Tips , Writing | 0

How to Think of Ideas for IELTS Writing Task 2

Recently, I have been asked by several TED-IELTS email subscribers for advice on how to think of ideas for IELTS writing task 2. Basically, they find it difficult to generate ideas to use in writing their essay. This is a topic I hadn’t previously covered (in depth) on this website, so I decided to write a special post today.

So if you are having trouble with IELTS writing task 2, and you need to come up with better ideas, keep reading.

What’s the problem?

For IELTS writing task 2, it’s tempting just to read the question and start writing. After all, you only have 40 minutes!

Unfortunately, this is not a good approach. You really should take a few minutes to:

  • analyze the question
  • generate ideas
  • plan your answer

This might seem like a waste of time, particularly if you are worried that your actual language skills are poor. However, the ability to form a few good sentences will not help you if you have misunderstood the question or produced an entirely incoherent essay .

Even a native speaker would find himself writing a weak essay if he simply read a question and immediately began writing. You need to take that time to go through step 1, 2, and 3 from above.

(And by the way, I have lots of material to help you with structuring your essay on this website. The video below should also be very helpful if you have time.)

Dealing with difficult questions

Sometimes the problem is that a question is particularly challenging. In this case, you may not be able to think of an answer because you feel it doesn’t relate to you, or you have no knowledge on the topic.

stressed out ielts student

Don’t get stressed while writing an essay.

This is often the case with questions on the topic of science. Of course, IELTS requires no specialist knowledge, but some people don’t know much general scientific knowledge.

Another possible issue relates to society. The world contains so many different cultures, and the IELTS exam is written mostly from a British perspective. Some of the ideas in the exam are alien to people from Asian cultures, for example. My students in China often have difficulties relating to some IELTS topics.

Do you need lots of ideas?

The simple answer is: no.

An IELTS writing task 2 essay should be comprised of 4 or 5 paragraphs . You are not writing a university thesis! This is just 250 words.

The key here is being able to develop ideas . So in a 4 paragraph essay, you might just have two ideas – one for each body paragraph. Those will be developed into details and explanations and examples.

So… How do you think of ideas for your essay?

While there is no guaranteed path to success, there are definitely some important things you can do to help think of ideas for your IELTS essay. I will explore them below:

1. Study IELTS topics in advance

It is impossible to predict the questions that will appear in the IELTS exam, but you can certainly prepare for them by looking at common topics . <— This link should really help you understand what topics are often repeated. Here are a few more examples:

  • environment

Many IELTS textbooks break down their chapters into topic themes, and this can help you to think of ideas by showing you lots of possible answers or related themes.

bbc news logo

Read and watch the news to get IELTS ideas.

You can also try to expand your knowledge on these topics prior to the exam by using the internet or reading books. For example, you can read the BBC News each day to learn more about the world from an international perspective. Here you will encounter articles on all sorts of ideas. Some of them might be new to you.

If there is a particularly difficult topic, like science, you can spend extra time studying it. Remember that you don’t need specialized knowledge. In other words, you don’t need to be the next Stephen Hawking to get a band 7!

2. Practice answering questions

Every student knows that it is essential to do practice before their IELTS exam. “Practice makes perfect,” as we often say.

For writing, you need to practice frequently and seek feedback in order to improve your language skills. However, you also can use this as an opportunity to improve your thinking skills .

Here’s a situation:

Imagine you are doing some IELTS writing task 2 practice one evening. You read a question that is very difficult. What do you do?

You might want to go online and research the topic in depth. This may not seem productive, but actually you are helping yourself learn more about the topic. Therefore, if a similar topic appears in your actual IELTS exam, you will be better prepared.

Similarly…

3. Read sample answers

Reading sample answers online can be quite helpful for your writing skills. These can show you good language points and teach you basic essay structures. Moreover, they can also introduce an IELTS student to new ideas.

When you read these sample essays, you are looking at someone else’s ideas. This is important because it can help you to view the question from a different perspective.

reading online for ielts

Read other people’s writing to get ideas.

Consider point 2, from above: You have a difficult question and don’t know how to answer. You can look the question up online and see what other people thought! This can help you to generate your own ideas by showing you new ways of thinking about the issue.

Just be careful not to rely upon this, or to copy other people’s ideas or words. Only use these materials as inspiration.

4. Brainstorming ideas

Points 1-3 were all intended for pre-exam preparations. The next ideas are designed for use during the exam.

Brainstorming means thinking of lots of ideas and writing them down. The central notion here is:

THERE ARE NO BAD IDEAS

You can take maybe 30-60 seconds to write down as many ideas on the topic as possible, and then cull them. Culling means getting rid of the weaker ideas, and only keeping the very best.

If you wanted to write an essay that says you really agree with something, maybe you should come up with 2 reasons why you agree. Each reason can make up one body paragraph. You should then:

  • Write down 10 reasons why you agree
  • Delete the 8 weakest reasons
  • Check that your 2 remaining reasons directly relate to the question
  • Make brief notes on the 2 remaining reasons

From there, you can simply rearrange your notes into a basic paragraph structure, and then begin to write.

5. Mind-mapping

This is in some ways quite similar to the above method (brainstorming), but it appeals more to those who are highly visual.

ideas for ielts essay topics vk

Mind-mapping means putting ideas on a piece of paper with the main idea at the centre, and other ideas on the outside. You might, for example, put the main topic in the middle and your micro-keywords on the outside.

If you are a visual sort of person, this will be ideal for you; however, for other people it might not be at all helpful. It can also take a long time to do it.

Some people really love mind-mapping , and it is certainly useful for them. You might want to look into it before your exam, and do some practice to see if it helps.

Is honesty the best policy?

IELTS is a test of your language skills; not your honesty or knowledge. If a question asks to what extent you agree or disagree, you will not have to sit a lie detector test!

Sometimes, the best thing is to write what pops into your head, and makes for a solid essay plan. Here’s why:

Last year I had an Indian student whom I was helping with his writing skills. He wrote this pretty wonderful essay and gave it to me. I asked if he had gotten help on it, or copied it from the internet. It just didn’t sound like him. He looked embarrassed and said, “I didn’t really know how to explain my point of view, and to be honest I didn’t feel that strongly about it. So I just wrote what was easiest.” He had disagreed with a statement about traffic, but could generate more ideas from the opposite perspective.

The fact is, the IELTS exam is important and you only have 40 minutes to write a good essay. If you feel that it is easier to write an essay that disagrees with something, even if your heart says you agree, then write the better essay! Sometimes our hearts tell us things that are hard to put into words.

Sometimes it is hard to write a really great IELTS writing task 2 essay because we just can’t think of good ideas. However, there are some things you can do to generate better ideas. You need to be familiar with the most common IELTS topics, and look at how other people tackle tricky questions. Then you need to set aside some time at the beginning of your IELTS writing exam to generate ideas – either through brainstorming, mind-mapping, or any other method that is useful for you. Just remember: too many ideas will ruin your structure, so pare it down to just one idea per paragraph.

Generating Ideas for IELTS essays

One of the main problems that students face when they start IELTS Writing is generating ideas for IELTS essays. Today, Nick and I look at one way that you should definitely NOT use to find ideas, and then look at two simple approaches that you should. I also have a great blog post that discusses idea generation that you might want to read first before you listen.

This is a Patron Only Episode: Click here to support the show and gain access to the audio or continue reading about ideas generation in the summary of the episode below

Podcast  Summary : Generating Ideas for IELTS essays

I ntroduction (do nick and i need to get a lawyer), why you should not use the “makkar” books to prepare for ielts..

In general, I don’t like to talk about other teachers or their preparation materials. However, I was recently sent a copy of the Makkar book, which contains reported questions from previous test and supposed “model” answers. What I saw, quite honestly, shocked and saddened me.

In these essays, I recognised mistakes that I have been correcting in my students’ essays for years. There was a focus on using “strange” lexis,  no cohesion between any of the sentences at all, and, in most essays, the ideas were also off-topic.

Any student who uses these “model essays” as the basis of their preparation will struggle to get a score that is higher than a 6.0. However, these books are popular, which leads to the question, why are people relying on them? I think that it is probably more for “ideas” than language. However, as we have already said, the ideas in this book are often not relevant, so what can students do find ones that are?

The top-down approach: All IELTS essays are based on topics that you should be able to discuss using your own general knowledge. Too often though, student tend to look for outside sources to answer questions rather than using their own ideas. This is a mistake – more often than not the answers come from within! This is particularly true for questions in the General Training exam. Take this recent question for example:

In may countries, paying for things using mobile phone apps is becoming increasingly common. Does this development have more advantages than disadvantages?

I am sure that many of your have these apps on your phone, so to answer this you simply have to reflect on your own experience and ask “What do I find good about these apps?”. Once you do that, you can keep digging deeper by asking more and more questions to focus your ideas further:

Why are payment apps good? They are convenient. Why are they convenient? They store my information Why is that convenient? I don’t have to carry my card separately at a shop or waste time entering my details online.

I find that students usually stop at question one while brainstorming for ideas rather than continuing to ask successive questions. This is a mistake. The more questions you ask, the better and more extended your final idea will be.

Asking questions to “reveal” answers can also be used to answer questions that you may not have real word experience of. Take this Academic prompt for example:

Some people think that schools should give prizes for academic successes. Others argue that it is more important for schools to give prizes for other achievements (for example, for sports, music and behaviour). Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

I think the first view is relatively easy to come up with answers for, but what about the second? Why would be want to reward other behaviours as well? Well, we should ask ourselves questions to find out:

Why should we reward other talents like sport and music? Not everybody is academically talented. We should recognise other talents Why should we recognise them? It will make sure that all pupils in a class feel motivated in some aspect of their schooling Anything else? A few students may be able to use these other talents in their future careers Why should we reward good behaviour? School is not just a place to get knowledge, it is a place to learn how to socialise Why? Because we want adults who can interact and communicate with one another Why? It will ensure that even students with a pro score are able to function well in society when they leave school

Do you see? The more questions you ask, the deeper you can go into your idea.

The bottom-up approach:

There are some questions, though, that are best approached in the opposite way. These are questions where you may instantly have one specific idea, which is not broad enough to form a whole argument. For example, for this question, the first idea the people usually have for the first view is “schools”.

Some people think it is good for children to be brought up in a city . Others argue that it is better for children to grow up in the countryside. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

However, I don’t think that you can talk about just schools in your essay (that would just be one sentence), so you need to step back and look at the wider picture. Why are schools in cities better? Probably because they have better teachers, more facilities, and a larger number of students from a range of backgrounds. Why is this good? It offers children a better educational opportunities. Moving back from a specific example to a general argument is a great way of exploring your ideas.

Social Trends:

There are some questions though that you might find difficult to answer and these are usually always those connected to social trends. I think that sometimes the writers in Cambridge forget that trends that are clearly seen in the UK and Europe may not be evident in other parts of the world. I remember a recent question in the Academic Test, which looked like this:

Today, many adult children choose to stay in their family homes instead of moving to their own apartment or house. Why is this? Is it a positive or negative developmen t?

If you live in the UK, you would have instant ideas or this question (i.e. the cost of housing is so expensive that people are forced to stay at home) but in many countries this is not the case. Plus, in many cultures, it is common for people to live with their extended family throughout their lives, so the whole concept of the question is simply alien,

What can you do to make sure you have ideas then for every question? Well, my answer is PRACTICE. It is a good idea to work through the common topics, so you have some time to think about your views BEFORE you sit (and there is no shame in using Google to find out what they are!).

Working through my 100 essay questions can really help with this: http://blog.myieltsclassroom.com/100-ielts-essay-topics/.  If you do, you will find generating ideas for IELTS essays becomes easier and easier!

IELTS Sample Essays

Here you will find IELTS Sample Essays for a variety of common topics that appear in the writing exam.

The model answers all have tips and strategies for how you may approach the question and comments on the sample answer.

You can also view sample essays with band scores on this page.

Looking at IELTS essay topics with answers is a great way to help you to prepare for the test.

These IELTS sample essays have been categorised in a way that makes it easy for you to see how certain essay question types require you to provide certain responses to ensure the question is fully answered.

Specifically these are:

  • Agree / Disagree
  • Discuss Two Opinions
  • Problems and Solutions
  • Advantages and Disadvantages
  • Other Types

Agree / Disagree Type Questions

In these types of question you are given one opinion and you then have to state the extent to which you agree or disagree with that opinion:

  • Advertising
  • Alternative Medicine
  • Spending on the Arts
  • Human Cloning
  • Social Interaction & the Internet
  • Airline Tax
  • Free University Education
  • Scientific Research
  • Banning Smoking
  • Employing Older People
  • Vegetarianism
  • Paying Taxes
  • Examinations or Formal Assessment
  • Multinational Organisations and Culture
  • Internet vs Newspapers
  • Technology Development
  • Dying of Languages
  • Animal Extinction
  • Truth in Relationships
  • Role of Schools
  • Return of Historical Artefacts

Discuss Two Opinions Type Questions

In this essay question type you are given two opinions, and you have to discuss both of these and then give your own view:

  • University Education
  • Reducing Crime
  • Animal Rights
  • Child Development
  • Diet & Health
  • Donating Money to Charity
  • Closing Zoos
  • Becoming Independent
  • Formal and Informal Education
  • Influence of Scientists and Politicians
  • Sources for Stories
  • Searching for Extraterrestrial Life

Cause Type Questions

There are a variety of 'cause type' essay questions. In these you first have to give the reasons why something has happened, in other words the causes, but then discuss a different aspect of it, such as the effects, solutions or the extent to whether it is a positive or negative development:

Causes & Effects:

  • Child Obesity
  • Skin Whitening Creams
  • Family Size
  • Having Children Later in Life
  • Time Away from Family

Causes and Solutions:

  • Youth Crime
  • Global Warming
  • Paying Attention in Class
  • International Travel & Prejudice
  • Museums & Historical Places
  • Disappearance of Traditions
  • Communication Between Generations

Causes, Pros & Cons:

  • Family Closeness
  • Living Alone
  • Rural to Urban Migration

Problems & Solutions Type Questions

In these type of questions, instead of discussing the causes of a problem, you need to discuss the problems related to a particular issue in society, and then suggest what can be to solve these problems:

  • Overpopulation
  • Competing for Jobs
  • Professionals Immigrating

Advantage & Disadvantages Type Questions

In these type of questions you are asked to discuss the positive and negative sides of a particular topic. You will usually be asked this in the context of giving an opinion ( e.g. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? Is it a positive or negative development? ):

  • Traffic Problems
  • Food Additives
  • Computer Games
  • Age Discrimination at Work
  • Children using Tablets and Computers
  • Cell Phones, Internet, & Communication
  • Working from Home
  • Eating Locally grown  Produce
  • Oil and Gas Essay
  • Peer Pressure on Young People
  • Online Fraud

'Hybrid' Types of Essay Question

There are sometimes questions that don't fit easily into a particular category as above. I've called these 'hybrid', as they are of mixed character, are composed of different elements from other types of essay, or are perhaps just worded differently.

  • Protecting Old Buildings
  • Animal Testing
  • Fear of Crime
  • Communication Technology
  • Influence of Children's Friends

Four step plan for getting ideas

  • Write a possible answer to the question
  • Mind gone blank? Put the topic of the question into Google or Youtube
  • Summarise different opinions on the topics
  • Attempt more questions and you will find you now have more ideas

1. Write a possible answer to the question

Attempt to write some ideas or opinions of the question.

Write down what you know, try and develop your answers.

One technique for getting ideas is to work through an entire list of past and recent IELTS task 2 questions .

2. Mind gone blank? Put the topic of the question into Google or Youtube

Try and identify the topic of the question, is it climate change or pollution?

Read around the subject, search for different opinions.

For example, we may have this question:

Some people think that it is important to use leisure time for activities that improve the mind, such as reading and doing word puzzles. Other people feel that it is important to rest the mind during leisure time. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

What is the topic here?

Should we use leisure time for activities to improve the mind?

Now we can start researching this topic online and start building an opinion.

You can add BBC, CNN, Guardian, to the search term to find recent coverage on the issues.

Our online IELTS course has an entire module about this, and we offer feedback on your answers so you improve much faster.

3. Summarise different opinions on the topics

After finding the different opinions, summarise them.

This will help you remember them, build your IELTS vocabulary which is essential for a high lexical resource score.

Also, write down entire sentences you find in your research, you can use these later in your essay.

4. Attempt more questions and you will find you now have more ideas.

Working through an entire list of questions is a very fast way to improve.

Here is a list of IELTS topics and sample answers , however, you will benefit more by researching the topics yourself.

Another tip is to become opinionated.

While researching these topics you can ask yourself: How do I feel about cyberbullying ?

This will help you when you are using phrases such as:

I strongly agree that cyberbullying is an issue of great importance in modern society…

Although you might be neutral on issues such as cyberbullying it is easier to get ideas if you have an opinion.

Final words

Do not stress over how good the ideas are or how basic they may be.

IELTS is a test of your English capabilities not your knowledge of the ideas you present.

Your ideas are secondary.

If you can present basic ideas in perfect English you’ll score well.

Though the quality of the idea may be secondary, they must be realistic.

Pay attention to the IELTS exam scoring criteria rather than getting too caught up in the formulation of ideas.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks, Abla

Excited to know that you are releasing the Essay ideas book on 6,7th May.I was waiting for the book.My last attempt scores were(L-7.5,R-6.5,W-7,S-7.5).My desired score is (L-8,8,7.5,7.5).I am solving mocks test but tend to score between 35-36 in L and R.Just need those extra 2-3 answers right. I am planning to take the test on 23rd May or 1st June.In the exam i tend to make mistakes in maps and mcq.Although I have gone through all your tips for maps and mcq, I find it confusing sometimes to solve the map questions .The mcq options are big sentences in the recent tests.

Liz,Any special tips to solve these types of questions apart from practice. Also how much time would it take to prepare for writing from the ideas book.

Regards, Parag

Both MCQ and maps are difficult – there is no easy way to tackle them. The key with maps is knowing the language and be familiar with maps. You could even try looking at various maps online and describing locations and directions to yourself. Any museum or gallery often has a guide – use them to practise. Also get used to the location of the numbers – start thinking what words you expect to come that would help you identify them. The more practice you do – the more preparation – the easier it will be in your test. You must get to know maps. For MCQ it is all about being able to spot keywords and also differences in the options. They are not easy questions to answer – even for native speakers. Go back through transcripts and check if there were keywords you spotted in the transcript that you didn’t pay attention to in the recording. the more you analyse listening transcripts, keywords, techniques etc, the easier it gets. Doing practice is not enough, you must analyse each and every answer. Write lists of vocabulary, paraphrases, keywords, traps etc. Start thinking more analytically. My e-book is about 150 pages in length and each page is full of exercises to learn ideas. You need to think how long it would take you to learn those ideas. It is a lot of ideas and a lot of vocabulary. Take a look at the sample chapter above and then imagine 150 pages like that 🙂

Hi, our respected teacher Liz. I have already purchased you videos about task 2 Essays. please notify me when your e.book (Ideas for IELTS Essays) is ready.

I will post a notice when it’s ready. I hope it will be this month.

' src=

Thanks Liz for the update, waiting for this !

' src=

Hi Liz, Can you please tell me when will you publish your ideas book?

I’m still formatting the pages. If I am lucky, it will be released at the beginning of April. I can’t promise that though.

' src=

Will this book free…? Or it will be payment book..?

The e-book of Ideas for IELTS Essay Topics will be sold. However, I will frequently offer large discounts for people on a low income.

Thanks dear liz… I wish i could meet u mam… If anytime i get chance to travel in UK..then i must want to meet u liz mam.. Lots of love nd respect 4 u💞

' src=

Will this book publish soon?

I hope to have it ready in the next three weeks – fingers crossed 🙂

' src=

Well done Liz , I’m waiting for it.

Could you please let me know when your book for “Ideas for IELTS Essay” will be available? I am eagerly waiting for this book. I have registered for IELTS exam which will be held on 23rd March, 2019. Is there any possibility to get this one before my exam date.

I am looking forward for your feedback.

Best Regards Mahmud

Sorry, there is a delay due to formatting. I hope to have it ready for the beginning of March. I will try my best anyway. I’ll let you know at the end of Feb when I hope to put it up for sale

' src=

Hi there. Can you please update us regarding your ideas book availability? I am desperately waiting for your ebook. Unfortunately, I have failed 11 times and I believe, I might get 7 in writing with your ebook help.

It is not enough just to have ideas. You need to be able to present them clearly, logically, in a connected manner with good extending points. If you have taken the test 11 times and still not got 7, you will need to review your whole approach, not just build ideas. Did you get my Advanced Writing Task 2 lessons?

' src=

please what exactly the time for posting your book for public?

There is no fixed date yet. The book is written, but each page needs formatting. It will take me time to do that because it’s a long book.

' src=

Hi Liz good day, may I ask where can I order your e-book? How much is it and is it already available?

Thank you very much and happy holidays 🙂

Not ready yet. I hope to know when it will be released by the end of this month. I’m hoping to release it in January, but it will depend on a number of factors I need to check.

Thank you so much for your reply. May I also ask how much should we pay for that?🙂

God bless Liz. You are our angel💓😭

Not sure yet. It will probably be a bit expensive because it is a very long book – with great exercises for vocabulary as well as ideas. However, I will always offer discounts every couple of months for people who can’t afford it.

Thank you very much for replying. We utterly appreciate it. We do hope we can afford to have one😊🙏

Sorry I think I replied twice to your message. Not sure if I was able to send it. Happy holidays and have a lovely day as well💓💗

The book price will not be low – it is a very large book full of very useful vocabulary and ideas exercises. However, from time to time, I will offer discounts so everyone can afford it.

' src=

I am eagerly waiting for e book with all 30 topics. Could you please let us know when will it ready?

Hopefully in January. I’ll post a notice when it’s ready 🙂

' src=

Thank you Liz. This is really great and looks completely useful especially vocabulary section. But could you please add an audio part to your e-book. In which Someone has gathered different audio file about different topics and that is really beneficial for people like me who have more time for listening rather than reading.

Thanks for the idea. However, my book will be very large. It will cover around 180 essay questions – it would be very hard for me to record all of them on my own.

' src=

Very helpful in writing task 2 Preparation, Please share more.

' src=

When is this book ready. I really need it.

In a couple of months.

' src=

HI Liz you work is always perfect as usual. I hope and suggest to make a comprehensive IELTS book which includes all the 4 skills.

hello mam pleasure to see this e-book on family mam can you make more e books on all topics like art money space etc

The e-book will cover 30 main topics with ideas for over 150 essays.

' src=

As the title indicates, the ideas are very helpful! Thanks for sharing many good things to help others in taking IELTS Test.

' src=

Thanks so much for organizing essay ideas in one book and I found that it is extremely useful and I am looking forward to it. When would it be about to publish?

Best regards, Khaing

In a couple of months hopefully. I’ll post a notice when it’s ready.

' src=

Really your ideas are unique and helpful. Thanks

' src=

its very helpful for everyone …thanks mam…

' src=

Hello Liz, this is very nice. l think it will be useful to IELTS students. Keep it up and best of luck.

' src=

Hi LIZ it’s really good and easy to understand I can’t find any error Thank you for this helpful book , i’m waiting for your next book

' src=

I hope your health is good.

Appreciate your efforts for this hardwork. My Suggession on behalf of all Ielts student is that you should make one complete PDF book of all contents written in your website , so that students can easily learn things from all stuff presented at one area ,rather they become confuse from the content written haphazardly(every where) on your website.

Please take your time , i know it will take some time . Do some exercise daily to remain fit and healthy as we love your presence for our preparation. Ask some students to help you for the preparation of this complete E-book and sold it on lower prices , which can result huge profitability to you as the number ielts are too much who follows you.

About 85% of all my work on this website is accessed through the main pages which are shown on the RED BAR at the top of the website. All other pages are accessed in the right hand column or home page. It’s all readily accessible for online learning. I will continue to post a lesson or content once a week for free on this website. This e-book will not be sold at a low price, but I will be offer regular discounts so that people on a lower income can afford it – the same as I do with my Advanced Writing Task 2 lessons.

' src=

Happy to write you and I am one of the constant followers of your content from India. I am preparing for my ielts exam and when I practice writing task 1 letter writing I got a doubt. Based on the letter topics, I found that I am using lot of “I” in my letters such as I purchased, I am a, I used to. Anyway I can reduce this? If you didn’t make a content of this before, kindly do one.

There is no way to reduce it if the letter is about you. One thing you should do is look at how many sentences start with “I” because this means you aren’t varying your sentence structures. So, the issue isn’t about avoiding the word “I”, it’s about sentence structures.

' src=

Hi Liz, Thank you so much, that is exactly what I am looking for. It’s organized so nice and contains many useful vocabulary. I really liked it and can’t wait to have a print. please keep going😊

' src=

good initiative liz it will help students that how to create ideas about any topic and you should cover all the topics uploaded in your websites. it is my advice that you should make a proper video on writing task 2 (essay writing) too as there is not any video.

Thanks for your feedback. This e-book will cover about 30 main topics which amounts to around 180 subtopics. There are three Advanced Videos for Writing Task 2 which you can purchase on this page: https://elizabethferguson.podia.com/

' src=

Very nice mam please send more ideas for different topics

' src=

Dear Liz, I apreciate ur effort towards our sucess. Please, how much is the 3 advaced videos. Thanks!

You can find them on this page: https://elizabethferguson.podia.com/

' src=

Even though there are a lot of sources online, this is by far the most complete structure of exercises I have encountered for myself. Exercises like matching word and phrases, words and nouns and especially finding the “one extra word” are the most beneficial for me.

These exercises combined with topic ideas present a complete package for preparing writing task 2. I wish there was more material in our disposal right now since my exam is in couple of weeks. Nevertheless a lot of people will benefit highly from it in the future, undoubtedly.

Thank you for all your help! Pranvera

Thanks for your feedback. Good luck with your test. You can find lots of ideas for essay on my website – see this page: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-writing-task-2/

' src=

we paid a huge sum to institutes to learn but never get stuff like which you provide us. thanks to you for your support mam

' src=

Hi Liz….. You are so helpful and doing a great job by providing information that is quite useful for a English language learner. I am appreciating your services and a bit excited about your e book. Thanks is a very small word of your dedication and hard work on this site however i can only say thanks a lot to you. You work helped me in many ways.

Here i would like to suggest you a bit about e book. I think so its your first experience and you do not much about a book writing. Here are my suggestions….. The title of IELTS Liz is a bit prominent it distract while reading the content. I think so (+) ,(-) arguments are not much effective add some other thing if possible. Other work is good. Best wishes for your e book.

Thanks for your feedback. This is an ideas book which is all about ideas for and against certain issues – surely those exercises help you remember the for and against ideas. The aim of this book is not to complete exercises, but to remember the ideas. Does that help? When you say the title of IELTS Liz – do you mean the watermark? I can make it both smaller and also more transparent if that would help??

' src=

Extraordinary!I must say. Vocabulary excercise are awesome. N yes, they are great help for people like me.☺ waiting for its complete version!!

' src=

It’s brilliant. Thank you for your endless support.

' src=

Thank you for the job well done. The ideas are greate

' src=

This is going to help many candidates to achieve their goal. Its really nice.

' src=

Hi Liz, I have purchased all your advanced lessons for writing task 2 and found they are extremely helpful!! Thanks. I am here to ask just one question, for the one-sided approach in opinion essays, it is sometimes impossible for me to think of 3 ideas. I usually can just come with 2 ideas and give supporting points. So, will I lose any marks if I write two body paragraphs only instead of 3 body paragraphs? My exam is coming soon, your earliest response is appreciated!

Thanks for your time.

It is completely fine. You have seen in my Advanced lessons that sometimes there are 3 body paragraphs and sometimes 2. You choose how many paragraphs depending on the number of ideas you have. If you have 3, then it’s about 65 words per paragraph. If you have only 2, it’s about 95 words per paragraph.

' src=

This is such a great idea and it will be absolutely beneficial for IELTS students and others. An example of how each vocab will be used is extremely useful too, as remembering the word itself does not help. In addition, the example, of one or two ideas of paragraphs for each topic would be great too.

Best wishes,

' src=

Hi Liz, Thanks for book. I think in the CHILDLESS MARRIAGES, The words in the box should be spaced out. Like “burdendevoted” and “responsibilitesrevole, it might cause confusion. also I would like to ask this CHILDLESS COUPLES CAN SPEND MORE TIME DEVOTED TO EACH OTHER. I don’t understand why it is “devoted” and not devoting” Is it lie …. which is devoted to each other” and we can drop “which is” out thanks

Sorry – I’ve just noticed the problem with the word spacing. That must have happened when I converted it to PDF – I’ll have to check how it converts. The sentence “CHILDLESS COUPLES CAN SPEND MORE TIME DEVOTED TO EACH OTHER.” is correct. It is the same as saying “Couples can spent more time dedicated to each other without the presence of another person in the relationship”.

' src=

Congratulations on this wonderful work. It’s really helpful and I appreciate your blogs and all the help you give to the students. Good Luck for your future endeavors. 🙂

' src=

I tot agree

' src=

It is really great work. Tkiu so much for your ideas which are so well organized and easy to follow.

' src=

Thank you Liz it is wonderful, very practical. good job.

' src=

Hi, Liz..sharing is caring really. Thanks for sharing this, its quite educative and informative. I want to find out however if you would be including tips to help on Speaking in the book, because I consider that very important. Many students do have phobia when it comes to speaking .Sharing common errors or ways to overcome the phobia won’t be a bad idea

This is an e-book for ideas for writing task 2 essays. The ideas can also be used in speaking part 3 which covers broader world issues. I plan to make Advanced lessons for Speaking at some point next year hopefully – I’ll post a notice when they are ready.

' src=

I HAVE READ THE SAMPLE ESSAYS .TO SPEAK THE TRUTH, IT WAS A COMPLETE SOLUTION FOR TASK 2. I APPRECIATE YOUR WORKS AND CONTINUATION OF LENDING HELPING HANDS. WE ARE EAGERLY WAITING FOR THE COMPLETE BOOK.MAY GOD BLESS YOU.

' src=

This will go a long way in helping candidates preparing for IELTS. We are looking forward for its production.

' src=

Its really helpful. Its a masterpiece of work . Good work done. Keep it up.

' src=

Hello! As a non- native English teacher, I say I really appreciate the excerpt and your lessons, but as sometimes it is difficult to find texts related to specific topics, the inclusion. Of such texts would be indispensable.

' src=

It is a wonderful job. It would be great if you can add one essay to each chapter by showing how to use the ideas and vocabularies in the essay format.

Thanks and have a great time.

I won’t be adding one for each chapter, but I will add one model essay to show you how you can use the ideas. Other model essays can be found for free on my website. I’ll put a link in the book to remind you. See this page: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-writing-task-2/

' src=

' src=

Hello Ma’am, I have some honest feedback, please do not take it negatively. 1. The ideas were fine, but they seemed to be very closely linked and repetative in nature, just like same thing presented or said in just a different way by lil tweaking it. Ideas were so closedly link that it seemed one main point and other two can be just supporting view. Sorry but expected higher level of ideas or some through points that can be used to write better topic sentences in essays, like the points that you have in all your 3 advanced lessons.. A level 9 band main topic idea. ( though i know we are not tested on ideas). 2. Vocabulary wasn’t that great and exercise were confusing, though i got all most 98% of them correct. Exercises are fine for advanced and intermediate, but not for elementary level. Exercise could be curated in more better way then the present ones from IELTS exams point of view. More of sentence completion, vocab exercises, add one word etc.. will help. Vocabulary was of elementary level, it could be upgraded. Adding more collocations w.r.t varied subjects would be of much help to us. 3. In Smaller families nowadays, the first point misses “to” word – Can move to city more easily. Honestly i had a bit higher expectation post learning from your paid 3 advanced lessons because they fully deserve to be made a paid subscription. Full justice to the price paid and I just love them! But if this e-book is going to be of paid value, you must consider it revamping a bit atleast.

Yours Sincere follower, Pooja

Thanks for your feedback. My Advanced lessons are specifically aimed at technique. This book is not. The ideas are just a collection of usable ideas for essays. The level of your ideas is not marked in IELTS, only the relevancy. Some topics have very advanced level vocab – not all topics are like that. Not because of writing style, but because some topics such as Environment or Crime & Punishment have specific vocab.

About the sentence “Can move city easily” this is correct. It is not about moving to a city from a town, village or the countryside, it is about “moving city” which means from one city to another city. This is the same as writing “move house” which means to move from one house to another house. We would say “Next week I will move house”. We can also say “I’m going to move city”.

All said, I’m going to carefully go through all my chapters to up the level of the vocabulary and ideas. I’ve also decided to have a section at the end of the book that reviews vocabulary for each topic. That section will focus on the higher level vocabulary and check your spelling as well. I’m sure by the time this e-book is ready to be launched it will meet all my usual standards 🙂 As you know, my aim is always to provide the best 🙂

' src=

Hi Liz i would like to know when this book will be available

' src=

Really stunning, can you please upload more chapters of the book, this really can help a lot .

I’ll publish all chapters when the e-book is finished 🙂

' src=

I have purchased the three video clips (discussion essays, opinion essays and adv/disadvantage essays). They are excellent. Are you releasing the training clips on cause/solution essay and direct question essay so that i can buy them?

Not until next year.

' src=

Hi Liz, Congrats and I wish you all the best with publishing your new e-book. Generally, the overall chapter is coherent, good format, clear and straightforward. The chapter reflects the originality of your work and is well presented in a textbook style. Here are some thoughts at different angles which I would like to share with you and hopefully these could be helpful to improve quality of the book.

In terms of format the chapter is well presented however, it still could be improved to achieve the consistency for the whole e-book or each chapter. For example, all the pages should be numbered to make it easy for the reader to follow. The header is quite close to the main text which makes it hard for me to catch the idea of each page; I also have to adjust my eyes sight looking for the information. I would also like to see all titles and subtitles are right aligned rather than center aligned. Line and paragraph spacing should be checked again to be consistent, for example it is single spaced in pages 6 but formatted differently in pages 7 and 8. In page 3, there are mistyping mistakes, these should be burden – [space] – devoted, and responsibilities revolve…; also needs to look at format of the vocabulary exercise in pages 6 and 7. However, these minor mistakes are in a acceptable level.

Turning to the contents, I would like to suggest putting the question before the text in the way you presented in topic 1, page 1; or should be presented like the way for vocabulary questions but not for sentence completion questions. I assumed there are many chapters in your e-book, so the first two sentences under each topic should clearly introduce what the chapter is about and should be repeatable for every chapters. I would suggest to change to “Each of the sections below contains ideas and vocabularies….. for the topic of family”. I think it is not necessary to mention “the sections are based on…” as this is applied for other chapters as well. Also, “Do not memorise sentences…” can be put separately as an instruction at the beginning of the book, or italic/bold formatted as a repeatable important note for each chapter. In page 2, i think it is a good idea to use Causes and Effects as these are more commonly used than Reasons and Effects. I would also suggest to put questions in a consistent way for the whole book, for instance, in page 2 you said “match the words and phrases from the sentences with their definitions” and “match the verbs 1-5 with the nouns a) – e) to make common collocations” could be rewrite in a same style. Overall, the sampled chapter is very good material and I am very interested to see the whole e-book in a near future. All the best luck, Blessed you, Emma.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments. Here are some points to answer your suggestions: 1. The information at the start of the chapter is only there because it’s a “stand alone” chapter which I have released. That particular information would normally be found in the instructions for using the book and the contents page. But I had to include the info in these pages today so people could learn directly and avoid errors. 2. The page numbers won’t be added until all chapters have been written – they will be the last thing to be added before publication. 3. Yes, the headings should be left aligned. That’s my error. All alter it in my e-book. 4. I’ll go over line spacing more carefully. 5. I’m going to have a video that goes with this e-book that explains how to use it – it will also explain the layout of exercises. Thanks again for being so thorough 🙂

' src=

Fantastic, informative and unique in its style I am looking forward to purchase the book .

' src=

' src=

Its really helpful..Thanks LIZ you are great.

' src=

I am following your lectures and I must say , all are very helpful for my IELTS preparation. These ideas made it so easy to write essay on any of the topic related to family. You are doing a commendable job. Thanks a lot.

' src=

Hey Liz, I have read your blog. And the information you give is always helpful to me. I am improving myself day by day only because of info you provide. Thanks for the same

' src=

It is really so informative ..i think i ielts candidate should read these lesson…could you tell me when will whole ebook will be avialable ??

Thanks. Hopefully in a couple of months.

' src=

I really like the way you have put the different topic ideas around family; This would definitely help the people like me who face difficulty in generating ideas. I really appreciate the vocabulary and usage of it as sometimes despite we know the word but still we face difficulty in using them I would also like to know how can we expand our ideas , by this I mean to say how to write expand our main idea. This may not be related to this e-book

Thanks for your feedback. Often when you expand your idea, it is about explaining it more fully. Just imagine that someone didn’t fully understand your meaning – then explain with an example or more detail. You don’t really need to have more ideas, just explain them more clearly than in only one sentence.

' src=

Thanks for spending your valuable time to help the students. It’s Valuable e-book containing different sections of task 2 ideas. I’m struggling with writing part. Mam, could you suggest some tips and important resources like this e-book.

See this page for model essays and free lessons: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-writing-task-2/ . Or see this page: https://elizabethferguson.podia.com/ to purchase my Advanced Writing Task 2 Lessons.

' src=

Hello Liz, Thank you for sharing the topic and also for the suggestion. First of all I would like to congratulate you for this effort. As you are the expert in this area, there’s no need for any suggestion as it has written very well. I liked the way you stated the positive and negative both points, so that we can get an idea how to explain the topic more precisely in different ways however you can add few things at the end of the topic – 1. The new vocabulary learnt in this topic. 2. Question types related to the topic. Rest all is perfect. Really hoping to see more from your side. I wish you all the best for your future endeavour…👍

You can find question types and essay questions on this page for free: https://ieltsliz.com/100-ielts-essay-questions/ . I’ll put a link to that page in the e-book. To learn the vocabulary for each topic it is best for you to write your own lists – specific words that you wish to learn. I’ll put a message at the start of the e-book about making notes as you go along.

' src=

Hello Liz, Thank you for this attempt and this book will definitely be an added advantage. I would like to share a few thoughts.

Most of those who are non-native English speakers tend to write or speak in the form of their own language. This result in multiple grammar mistakes and less formal approach. It will be helpful if this book addresses such instances. – Eg; Informal approach ‘ Something must be done about it”. Formal approach ‘Action is required to tackle this problem’ – Examples could be provided for the topics which are frequently used. – Further to note, the same point / sentence could be written in band 6, 7, 8 levels, there by it will be helpful to understand how to improve the writing. Those who are good with ideas and essay structures but less likely to score in complex sentences could benefit from such information.

Thank You and appreciate your commitment and great effort in this subject. Regards Rajitha

Thanks for your feedback. I think you are mistaking the aim of the e-book. This isn’t to improve your grammar or sentence structures or language. It is only ideas for topics. I am currently organising a Grammar List E-book for writing task 2 and I will put your ideas forward for that book, particularly changing informal to formal. Thanks

When will whole book is avialable and where ? Its really informative

In a couple of months, hopefully.

' src=

Hi Liz , The samples is very helpful and yest it’s give range of variety of vocabulary as well as ideas also it helps us to organize our thoughts. Thank you very much and go on

' src=

this is really helpful. there are lots of ideas in this chapter. thank you! 🙂

' src=

Hi Liz.. Congrats for the new step! I had a quick read through and here’s what i thought. You’ve listed out pros and cons as well as effects of different situations, but how about also adding in a section for balanced ideas too? Such as in, for example, the elderly people theme, a middle ground view where, the grandparents live close by and the family can drop in and check in on them. This way everyone gets to keep their freedom and at tge same time receive the family’s attention. The reason I suggest this is because I’ve seen many of my own students attempting a balanced opinion but seem lost for good ideas which are practical and practiced actually in reality. I feel including this too would make up for the student’s lack of reading and experience of the real world. All the best!

Thanks for your feedback. I like your idea and I know it would be very helpful. I’ll see what I can do – it’s not always possible to add that view – it depends on the topic. Let me see… Thanks 🙂

' src=

I felt your e-book very helpful. Everything is very precise and explained well. Thanks Liz for your help

' src=

  • Summarize the essay and state the final view on the topic

Sample Answer

The 21st century is marked by the technological, social, and economic advancement of human civilization. However, around most countries, especially third-world nations, the problem of vagrants is still a concerning issue. There are many suggestions when it comes to the upliftment of the homeless, and one of the most popular of these is financial assistance. Although monetary aid can help the destitute in several ways, it does not improve their condition substantially. In the following paragraphs, I will explore the topic in-depth and justify my views on the same.

The predicament faced by the homeless is much more complex than meets the eye. Most of the people who cannot afford the basic necessities of life are facing such hardships due to generational poverty or lack of proper education and thereby limited employment prospects. Thus, mere financial assistance in the form of cash is insufficient in ameliorating the situation of the underprivileged and unsettled.

Furthermore, due to the transient nature of vagrants, the safety of a lump sum amount is questionable in the hands of such people. There have been many instances where individuals have faced threats and mishaps due to the possession of valuables. Also, in many cases, homeless people end up spending assistance money on harmful and illegal items. Therefore, providing such people with monetary assistance can often put their lives in danger.

Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that even the slightest degree of assistance can significantly ease the difficulties of the needful. That being said, it is important to find a long-term solution rather than providing short-term support.

In conclusion, the plight of the homeless has been a complication for ages. Thus, to overcome this problem, more sophisticated measures should be taken than giving monetary aid.

2. Discussion Essay

In a discussion essay, you’ll have to discuss for and against the given topic. Following are some latest IELTS writing task 2 topics for  discussion essay   with answers.

  • Aging population
  • Dangerous Sports
  • International Car-free days
  • Education and Career
  • People and community
  • Economic growth

Essay Type –  Discussion Essay

  • Elaborate on the topic and mention the contents of the following paragraphs.
  • The benefits of online education and their impact on the future of education.
  • The values of face to face learning and how it leads to better mental development.
  • Summarize the essay and mention the final opinion on the topic.

Technological advancement is one of the highlights of the modern era. Today, online education has become so common that nearly all kinds of courses are available online. Preparation resources for every examination, along with video tutorials, are also provided via online platforms. It is believed by many that e-learning will replace the traditional ways of education. However, there is also a sizable chunk of the population that believes conventional methods of teaching will always be superior. In this essay, I will elaborate on the topic from both perspectives and justify why I think online education will be the preferred method of learning in the future.

There is no doubt that learning through online platforms has become a common approach for countless students. The degree of comfort and convenience enjoyed by students while studying on their personal computers is unmatched. Additionally, with the availability of numerous tools and facilities online, students can now learn in a more sophisticated and substantial manner. Also, students can access their reference material at any point in time without any hindrance when online education is concerned.

Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that classroom learning has its own advantages. The level of retention is remarkably higher when an individual learns a concept or a subject directly from a teacher in a physical environment. Since students are able to see and hear the lectures by the professor, they are able to understand and analyze the material relatively better.

Finally, the better approach to learning is greatly influenced by personal choice. That being said, with the pace at which technology is progressing, it is safe to say that online learning will be the primary mode of education in the future.

3. Advantage or Disadvantage Essay

For this type of essay, you have to write about the positive and negative aspects of the given topic.

Here are some recent ielts writing task 2 essay topics for  advantage/disadvantage essay   with answers.

  • Living in big cities
  • Youth and Community
  • Traffic and Accommodation
  • Remote Environment

Essay Type –  Advantages and Disadvantages Essay

  • Paraphrase the topic and state the view.
  • Mention the contents of the following paragraphs.
  • List the advantages of rote learning and how it is more convenient than other methods.
  • Mention the disadvantages of rote learning and its negative effects.
  • Summarize the topic and state the final opinion.

There have been many approaches to learning as education has evolved over the years. For the past few years, rote learning has become an inherent part of education systems and learning in general. Many students follow this method religiously for exam preparations as it is a very convenient method of learning. However, like any other approach or method, rote learning also has pros and cons. In the following paragraphs, I will elaborate on the advantages and disadvantages of memorization by repetition.

Firstly, rote memorization is one of the simplest ways of committing information to memory. This is a prime reason for this technique being so popular. Since this method allows students to learn a particular topic without understanding the meaning of the concepts, it enables them to prepare for examinations in a time-efficient manner as it takes significantly less time to cover the entire syllabus using this technique.

Au contraire, this method of memorization can have problematic consequences in the future if used far too often. If an individual learns an important topic or subject with the aid of rote learning, they might be unable to apply the knowledge from that subject in real life. As memorization by repetition indirectly obstructs mental development and growth of aptitude, people might find themselves in a plight when a situation arrives where conceptual knowledge is mandatory. Additionally, this method of learning tends to become habitual and thereby hard to change.

In conclusion, I would like to say that rote learning has become a very typical part of the present education system. Nevertheless, we must understand that such an approach does not facilitate proper learning.

4. Problem and Solution Essay

In solution essays, the topic will be a problem and you’ll have to give a solution to the particular issue. Sometimes the question may also be posed as to why this particular issue happened, and you’ll have to present your opinions based on the issue.

Essay Type –  Cause/Solution Essay

  • Paraphrase the topic using synonyms.
  • Mention the contents of the subsequent paragraphs.
  • List the major issues caused by overpopulation.
  • Suggest possible solutions to overcome the mentioned problems.
  • Summarize the essay and mention the solutions in brief.

The world population has reached tremendous heights over the last few decades, and today the current estimate on the number of inhabitants globally stands at 7.8 billion. The global population is rising at an alarming rate, and concurrently, this has led to numerous hardships to the entire human civilization. The adverse effects of overpopulation have not only been seen by third-world countries, but developed nations have also faced the issues caused by excessive population growth. In the following paragraphs, I will explore some pressing complications caused by excess population and possible solutions that can be implemented.

To begin with, one of the most consequential problems caused by overpopulation is the depletion of natural resources. Fossil fuels are on the verge of being completely exhausted with the rate at which they are being used by human beings. At the same time, water bodies are becoming contaminated, and the natural flora and fauna of the earth are also being destroyed for capitalist gains. Also, the overall surge in population puts an enormous strain on the government resources, availability of food and proper sheltering, etc.

In order to tackle the problem of overpopulation, people have to be educated on various aspects and topics that are typically stigmatized in various societies. Indeed, the growth in population cannot be curbed immediately. Thus, to ease the dependence of mankind on fossil fuels, alternative sources of energy must be discovered. If global superpowers and wealthy nations work in unison against the issue of excessive population growth, only then will this predicament be ameliorated.

Finally, the issues caused by overpopulation and excessive population growth cannot be improved straight away. However, we all must work towards improving this situation in order to create a better future for coming generations.

Visiting a foreign nation for leisure or work has become a regular affair for a majority of people in this day and age. Today, not going for a vacation at least once in a calendar year is considered outlandish and atypical. The global tourism industry has developed to quite an extent over the last few years. In this essay, I am going to explore the reasons behind this trend of traveling and mention what travelers gain from their journeys.

People in the present era travel for a variety of reasons. Some of the chief reasons for traveling are better educational services, lucrative employment opportunities and also higher standards of living. With the advancement of technology and accessibility of information by the internet, people can make their travel plans with accuracy with the help of reliable information from travel websites and blogs. Additionally, countries across the globe have recognized the importance of tourism as a contributor to the economy of a nation and therefore have relaxed the travel laws making international travel significantly straightforward.

Traveling can lead to a plethora of benefits both physically and mentally in the life of a human being. People are often engaged in full-time job roles where they dedicate most of their time and energy. Amidst such a tedious routine, travel can help people take a break from the monotony of work and recharge their energy. Travelling also presents an individual with better opportunities in terms of education, employment, and living standards which might not be available in their native country.

In conclusion, I would like to say that the rise in travel and tourism of people is a direct consequence of the development of human civilization. As we progress further into the future, such ventures are becoming more simple and convenient.

[PDF] Ideas for IELTS – 24 Topics

Ideas for ielts topics.

Who is this book for?

Many students have no ideas or opinions about IETLS writing topics. Even if your grammar is perfect, you will not get a high IELTS score if you do not know what to write. This book is for students who want to go into the writing exam feeling confident that they have excellent ideas, opinions and vocabulary for as many topics as possible How do you get an IELTS score of 7 or higher?

The key to a high score is not grammar, it is not your use of words like “moreover” or “in addition”, and it is not your use of phrases like “this is controversial issue nowadays”.

To get a high score you need to use good “topic language” (words and phrases that are related to the question topic). You need good ideas in order to answer the question well.

How should you prepare for IELTS writing task 2?

There is an enormous amount of advice on my website ielts-simon.com. Here is a summary of what I suggest:

  • Spend more time preparing than testing

When you test yourself, you find out what your level is, but you do not learn anything new. You will not improve if you only write test essays. Before writing an essay, study the topic and prepare your ideas, opinions and vocabulary.

  • Steal my ideas

If you only use the vocabulary that you already know, you will not learn anything new, and you will not improve. Practise linking my topic ideas together to write “perfect essays”. See the website for examples of how to do this.

  • Use this book together with the website

The website ielts-simon.com contains lessons and videos that show you how to use the ideas from this book. You can speak to me there if you have any questions.
