His Early Life

These few lines about Jawaharlal Nehru just skim the surface of his early life and education. Born on 14 November 1889 in Allahabad,  Nehru was a member of the renowned Nehru family. His parents were Motilal Nehru and Swaroop Rani who belonged to the esteemed Kashmiri Pandit community. Nehru’s childhood was marked by comfort and privilege, thanks to his father’s prosperous law practice. His educational journey began at home, where he received guidance from a dedicated teacher. This early exposure to learning in a nurturing environment laid the groundwork for his future academic pursuits. At the age of fifteen in 1905, Nehru set out on a transformative adventure by travelling to England. He enrolled at Harrow School, a prestigious boarding institution, where he received a traditional British education. This experience not only expanded his knowledge but also introduced him to a different culture and educational system. In 1907, he took another significant step by joining Trinity College, Cambridge. There, he pursued an Honours degree in Natural Science, further honing his intellectual abilities and critical thinking.  In 1910, he joined the Inner Temple Inn and started studying law like his father. In 1912, he returned to India and tried to work as a barrister in the Allahabad High Court. He attended the annual session of the Indian National Congress in Patna and began to work for the liberation of India from British rule  as a freedom fighter.

His Political Career

Greatly disturbed by the way the Indians were treated by the ruling British, he resolved to join the freedom movement and fight for the independence of India from  British rule. Unable to turn a blind eye to what was happening in his country,  he joined the Indian independence movement with Mahatma Gandhi. The pivotal year of 1920 saw Nehru deeply involved in the Non-cooperation Movement, a commitment that led to his frequent brushes with arrest.  He worked hard to internationalise the Indian freedom struggle by getting foreign allies. He was successful in the year 1927 when the Congress Party was invited to the Congress of Oppressed Nationalities in Brussels. At the start of World War 2, under Nehru’s leadership, the Congress decided to help the British in the war, on the condition of complete independence of India after the war with a new constitution. The British didn’t agree but India did manage to get independence in 1947. Unfortunately, India was divided into two nations, Pakistan and India, with Nehru elected as the first Prime Minister of the nation. On 27th May  1962, he died due to a cardiac arrest.

He also wrote many letters to his daughter, Indira, inculcating in her a love for the rich cultural and social heritage of India and the importance of the Indian freedom struggle. His inaugural speech, ‘Tryst with Destiny’, as the first Prime Minister of independent India, is recited by people till date. He was also elected as the President of the Indian National Congress in 1929 and under his leadership, the Congress took the pledge of complete independence or Poorna Swaraj from British rule.

After India’s independence on 15 th August 1947, he became the first and longest serving Prime Minister of India till 1964. He took the responsibility of leading India to success just after the independence of the country. His leadership and vision helped India to achieve prosperity, progress and a place on the international stage. He laid the foundation of democracy in India and exemplified this belief at an international level by adopting the Non-Aligned Policy as an integral part of the country’s foreign policy and pioneered the Non-Aligned Movement in the world. His belief in peaceful co-existence propelled him to sign the Panchsheel Agreement between India and China in 1961. He also supported disarmament and put in a lot of effort to create an international order of peace and harmony, leading India to a position of respect in the world.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is known as ‘The Architect of Modern India’ due to the rich heritage of planning and development he left behind. He established many educational, medical and technical institutions like the Indian Institute of Management and the Indian Institute of Technology. He was the brainchild behind many large industrial, irrigation, agricultural and power projects like establishing steel plants, power plants and construction of dams which led to India’s technological and infrastructural development.

English Summary

Jawaharlal Nehru Essay: His Idea of Secularism & Religion

Introduction.

The concept of religion and secularism have played an important role in the history of our country. Some leaders made religion a tool to divide India while some used secularism to strengthen its unity and fraternity. Nehru was the one who left no stone unturned to strengthen secularism during the 1940s.

A number of Hindu militants skilfully tried to disrupt the idea of a secular state through careful propaganda. They condemned secularism as appeasement of the Muslim community.

They were of the opinion, “Why Hindus deny themselves a Hindu state and a preferred status for the sake of the Muslims who” according to them, “ were disloyal to the concept of a composite state.”

Nehru rejected this radical idea, calling it narrow and intolerant and said, “As long as I am at the helm of Affairs, India will not become a Hindu State.”

Similarly in a Constituent Assembly, when a Muslim Leaguer demanded separate electorates, Nehru retorted, “Do you want a real national secular state or a theocratic state? If the latter, then in this union of India a theocratic state can only be a Hindu state…Will anything be more dangerous than that?”

Nehru was quite well aware of the importance of secularism in India. He knew well that India could develop only if all communal pulls and fanatic revivalism were exempted from the secular polity.

Nehru’s Idea of Religion and Secularism

There are three main features of the Nehruvian concept of Indian Secularism.

  • Indian secularism is not liberal i.e. it ensures maintaining religious neutrality, equality, and liberty to all the minorities living in our country while combating communalism and radicalism.
  • Indian secularism is not absolute. Though it gives religious freedom to all the communities, yet these liberties can be taken away by the judiciary in order to maintain public order, morality, and welfare of citizens.
  • The Nehruvian concept of secularism allows religion to play a part in social welfare.

The religion was an important dimension to Jawaharlal Nehru’s concept of secularism. He was essentially a religious man but not in the sense in which religion was understood in India. He was once asked, “Are you religious?” He answered, “Yes, but not of the temple going type.”

He believed that some form of religious belief is important for mankind, however, it prevents scientific growth and development in society. He wanted religion to develop the inner-self of a man and hated it as a tool to create violence in the country.

Hence it could be said that the political propaganda in the name of religion could harm India at that time but it was because of Nehru and the like-minded leaders that India became a secular state.

Jawaharlal Nehru Essay In English | Free Sample

Jawaharlal Nehru (14 November 1889 – 27 May 1964) was an Indian politician who became the first Prime Minister of India and a central figure in Indian politics before and after independence. He emerged as an eminent leader of the Indian independence movement under the tutelage of Mahatma Gandhi and ruled India from its establishment as an independent nation in 1947 until he died in 1964.

He is considered to be the architect of the modern Indian nation-state: a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. He was also known as Pandit Nehru due to his roots in a high caste brahmin family.

He completed his higher education at Trinity College, Cambridge, and the Inner Temple, where he trained to be a barrister. Upon his return to India, he enrolled at the Allahabad High Court and took an interest in national politics which eventually replaced his legal practice. A committed nationalist since his teenage years, he became a rising figure in Indian politics during the upheavals of the 1910s.

He became the prominent leader of the left-wing factions of the Indian National Congress during the 1920s, and eventually of the entire Congress, with the tacit approval of his mentor Gandhi. As Congress President in 1929, Nehru called for complete independence from Britain’s rule. Nehru and the Congress dominated Indian politics during the 1930s as the country moved towards independence.

Nehru was elected by Congress to assume office as independent India’s first Prime Minister in 1947. As prime minister, he set out to realize his vision of India. The Constitution of India was enacted in 1950, after which he embarked on an ambitious program of economic, social, and political reforms. Chiefly, he oversaw India’s transition from a colony to a republic, while nurturing a pluralistic society. In foreign policy,

Nehru took a leading role in Non-Alignment while projecting India as a regional hegemon in South Asia. Under Nehru’s leadership, the Congress emerged as a catch-all party, dominating national and state-level politics and winning consecutive elections in 1951, 1957, and 1962.

He remained popular with the people of India despite political troubles in his final years and failure of leadership during the 1962 Sino-Indian War. In India, his birthday is celebrated as Children’s day .

Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14 November 1889 in Allahabad in British India. His father, Motilal Nehru (1861–1931), a self-made wealthy barrister who belonged to the Kashmiri Pandit community, served twice as President of the Indian National Congress , in 1919 and 1928.

His mother, Swaruprani Thussu (1868–1938), who came from a well-known Kashmiri Brahmin family settled in Lahore, was Motilal’s second wife, the first having died in child birth. Jawaharlal was the eldest of three children, two of whom were girls. The elder sister, Vijaya Lakshmi, later became the first female president of the United Nations General Assembly.

His father had him educated at home by private governesses and tutors and thus he grew up an only child till the age of 9. During his stay in England between 1906 and 1907, his mother Swaruprani taught him about women’s empowerment and inspired him to believe that they too could be strong despite social customs preaching otherwise at that time.

Jawaharlal Nehru was a shy and reserved child who spoke English rather than Hindi, which was his mother tongue. He grew up with an acute awareness of his ugliness. His peculiar looks also made him stand out among his peers; he had a large nose that he inherited from his father, thin lips, and protruding ears.

He went to Trinity College, Cambridge in October 1907 and graduated with an honors degree in natural science tripos in 1910. During this period, he also studied politics, economics, history, and Sanskrit for a year. In addition to these academic pursuits, Nehru was a voracious reader and also wrote poetry – which is available. He was enchanted by the natural beauty of England and dreamed of returning to India as “a romantic figure like Byron.

Nehru returned to India in 1910 and passed his Indian Civil Service examination the following year. On 8 July 1912, he sailed back for England to take his exam as a barrister at law from Lincoln’s Inn. During this time, M K Gandhi became his mentor in London. However, it took him 27 attempts before he could pass his bar examinations. This failure frustrated Nehru who then called off an intended engagement that had been arranged by his family.

He was declared the winner of the 1917 Nehrus and Pandits award for literature which was set up by Annie Besant for young Indians studying in England. Meanwhile, he had been given a post as an honorary official of the Khetri State. During this time, he met Lady Dorothy Hope, later on marrying her. The couple had two sons-

Jawaharlal Nehru’s marriage with Lady Dorthy nee petit, daughter of the Wiltshire Baronet Harold Petit – who was the same age as Nehru. Their marriages were performed under Arya Samaj rituals which were approved of by their parents.

During this time he had become enamored of Annie Besant, president of the Theosophical Society, and became a member of the society. This association was eventually abandoned by him to follow Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence. It is around that time that Nehru became an admirer like Mahatma Gandhi   Nehru and pandits and slowly came to be known as “obliging loyalists” to Gandhi. He also founded Aurobindo Study Circle in England.

Nehru had political ambitions of his own and was in constant touch with Indian nationalist leaders. He stood for the post of secretary of the All India Congress Committee but lost to Lala Lajpat Rai by one vote.

During World War I, Nehru volunteered for the St John Ambulance while Kamala supported the war efforts. She worked on knitting clothes and rolling bandages. She also helped to run a small hospital in Delhi during the war. During this time she also gave birth to their daughter, Indira Gandhi on 19 November 1917- who later became Prime Minister of India.

Nehru was again unsuccessful in winning an election for the post of Congress President. Thereafter in 1920, he visited British officials to press his demands for a fully responsible government and later went on a tour of Europe and Russia.

In 1922, Nehru was arrested seasonably again while leading a non-cooperation movement in violation of laws that prohibited meetings and processions without prior permission from the authorities. However, this did not hamper the rise of Nehru’s popularity among Indians.

In April 1923, he won an election to be elected as the president of the All India Trade Union Congress. In 1924, he was re-elected to the central Legislative Council from the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh

Nehru had been appointed as a member of the seven-member delegation for the Nehru Report, which called for dominion status within the British Empire with an elected majority in the Legislative Council. The report was rejected by most Indian politicians and Congress party moderates like Madan Mohan Malviya.

Nehru soon became close to Motilal Nehru and through him got introduced to Swaraj Party leader C R Das, whose policies were more left-wing than those of Gandhi. During this time he also met several foreign delegates such as Harold Laski, Lord Lytton, Hector Munro, etc.

In 1927, he became a member of the working committee of the Indian National Congress and later became its President. During this time Nehru helped to organize relief work in Punjab and the United Province where 70,000 people lost their lives as a result of floods.

He also visited Bengal to ease the suffering caused by famines. In January 1928 he was elected as an official Congress candidate from U P Legislative Council and served as the secretary of Dr. Ansari and then Jawaharlal Nehru himself. The same year his wife Kamala died after a long illness that plunged him into the gloom.

Nehru was imprisoned many times for his active participation in the freedom movement. He was in jail from 1930-1933, 1937-1940, and 1942-1945. During the last term, he could not take an active part in politics for many years owing to his poor health which deteriorated further because of tuberculosis. Nehru spent much time reading books and talking to friends.

In 1946, after being released from prison, Jawaharlal Nehru became free India’s first Prime Minister and succeeded Lord Louis Mountbatten as the viceregal representative on 15 August 1947. After independence, he set out to frame an independent Indian Constitution that embodied socialistic ideas espoused by Gandhi and the Congress party.

In 1949, Nehru signed a treaty with Liaqat Ali Khan of Pakistan making Kashmir an independent state. In the same year, India’s constitution became official.

Nehru as prime minister was responsible for modernizing and industrializing rural India by providing free education to millions of children and offering free healthcare. He set out on a massive project to build large hydroelectric power plants, steel factories, roads, ports, and communications networks across the country. He made primary education compulsory in all states and promoted adult education as well as introduced schemes that led to universal literacy in 1971.

As prime minister, Nehru advocated socialist economic policies for an industry being owned by the state. This he believed would eliminate poverty alleviating the condition of India’s exploited masses. Nehru had no time for western-style parliamentary democracy saying it was “too clumsy and slow… not accurate or quick enough to meet the demands of rapid social progress.”

He also advocated abolishing big land holdings, nationalizing coal and other minerals, taxes on wealth and income, protectionism for industry, and a total state monopoly on foreign trade. Criticism came from all sides, including socialists like Ram Manohar Lohia who accused him of preaching Marxism through the backdoor. By 1959, India’s economy began showing signs of stagnation as Nehru pursued Keynesian policies that called for increased government spending which resulted in budget deficits and inflation.

Nehru soon became unpopular with his socialist economic reforms giving rise to a right-wing faction in the Congress party led by Morarji Desai which became Nehru’s most vocal critics. Tension grew so high that in 1964, Gandhi advised Nehru to hand over power to his younger colleagues. He died on 27th May 1964 of a heart attack leaving his daughter Indira Gandhi as Prime Minister.

Between 1921 and 1945, Jawaharlal Nehru was imprisoned many times for ‘crimes’ related to India’s struggle for independence. Cumulatively, he spent many years in prison. Whilst in prison for the second or third time, Nehru began to write a series of letters to his then ten year old daughter, Indira. This chapter takes those letters as a point of departure for reflecting on the political work of history-telling in international law, and on the ways in which the ‘people’ in the Third World may be called by their leaders into relation, with each other, and with the world. In consideration of these questions, this essay is speculative rather than biographical, reflective rather than historical. What I seek to do here is to tease out a juridical-political imaginary of a certain moment, which the reader may juxtapose with what is imagined to be possible now for international law for, in and of the Global South. Forthcoming in Eslava, Fakhri and Nesiah (eds.), Bandung, Global History and International Law: Critical Pasts and Pending Futures (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2016).

Modern Asian Studies

Douglas Ober

In the first decade after Indian independence in 1947, the secular Indian state projected a vision of itself as being guided by universal ethics rooted in the nation’s ancient Buddhist past. From the circulation of Buddhist relics in distant lands to the reinvention of Buddhist symbols in contemporary state regalia, the government sponsored a wide variety of programmes in the name of world peace, Pan-Asian unity and enlightened democratic values by promoting Buddhism both within India and across Asia. This more than decades long effort was entirely conducive to the political and social visions of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and key members of his Cabinet. In its most concise formulation, this Nehruvian-style Buddhism consisted of a two-pronged approach, one concerning the uses of Buddhism in the domestic sphere—that is for domestic consumption by citizens of the new nation—and one concerning the uses of Buddhism as an instrument of foreign policy. At the heart of these projects was the dual effort to integrate a diverse South Asian populace into a wider national consciousness and yield influence among the postcolonial order in Asia. This article details the strategies and ideologies that Nehru and his Cabinet employed vis-à-vis Buddhism from the mid 1940s to late 1950s when their Buddhist statecraft began to unravel due to geopolitical crises and the mass conversions of Ambedkarite Dalits. After tracing these developments, the article briefly considers the continued relevance of the Nehruvian engagement with Buddhism as it relates to twenty-first century Indian affairs.

Essay on Jawaharlal Nehru in English 500 words

Introduction

Nehru was from a family of Kashmiri Brahmins, a caste that was well-known for its intelligence and ability to manage difficult situations. His father, Moti Lal Nehru, was an important figure in the fight for India’s freedom from British rule and a lawyer. In later years, Nehru became one of Gandhi’s most important friends. He explains in his book how deeply concerned he is about the political situation in India.

Jawaharlal Nehru was selected to be the subsequent leader.

In the year 1912, Jawaharlal Nehru attended the session of the Congress. As the situation weakened and appeared to be hopeless, he became a member of the Home Rule League, a political organization. At a meeting of the National Congress held in Lucknow in 1916, Jawaharlal Nehru was introduced to Gandhiji. He was quite shocked by Gandhiji’s kind nature. In 1924, Jawaharlal Nehru was promoted to the position of head of the Department of the Allahabad Municipal Corporation. In 1926, he quit his job after holding it for a total of two years.

Following that, Nehru was appointed to the position of General Secretary of the Congress Committee, a position he held from 1926 to 1928. Lahore was chosen to act as President of the Nehru Party during the annual Congress meeting that took place in December 1929. In the same year, he made a request for a full swaraj. First Prime Minister of India was Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Jawaharlal Nehru was selected by Mahatma Gandhi to serve as the President of the Congress session that was held in Lahore. As a result, it was decided that Nehru would act as Prime Minister. Nehru was elected as India’s first Prime Minister despite the fact that his vote total was lower. After this, his opposition was quite angry at him, but while he was in government, he used his authority effectively and made a great number of decisions that were good for the country.

The important function that Nehru played in his role as Prime Minister

In 1947, the British administration was responsible for the independence of about 500 different princely nations, both small and large. It was challenging for Nehru to merge all of these princely states under a single flag for the first time, but he was able to do so with the assistance of some other great men. Nehru was a significant player in India, becoming the nation it is today. You may observe how the strategies they’ve made have helped to grow in agriculture and industry by looking at their Five Year Plan.

It is safe to say that Nehru earned the position of the first Prime Minister of an independent India by the strength of the political highs and lows he experienced throughout his career, as well as the choices he made in the best interests of the nation in mind.

Mahatma Gandhi thought he was a great freedom fighter and one of the most trustworthy leaders of the time. He did a lot to help the Indians get their freedom. He is known as the “architect of modern India” because he brought democracy to India and stopped civil wars from happening there.

Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru was born in the city of Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, on November 14, 1889. His father was Motilal Nehru, and his mother was Swarup Rani Nehru. He usually comes from a family that has a lot of money. His father gives him everything he needs, like a luxury home that was taken from Anand Bhawan. His father also taught him at home and sent him to private school.

Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru’s father was a well-known lawyer and a member of the Indian National Party. His father is in touch with both the Indian government and the British government. He also used to give money to people like Chandrasekhar Azad, who were fighting for freedom in their country.

Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru went to school in England. When he finished, he became a lawyer and then went back to India. He was also a member of the Allahabad High Court, where he used to work. But over time, he became more and more interested in politics. So, he chose to become a member of the Indian National Congress. In 1946, Nehru became India’s Prime Minister until a new leader could be chosen. On August 15, 1947, India’s Independence Day, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru raised the flag at the Red Fort in Delhi. After that, on January 26, 1948, India’s Republic Day, he became the country’s first Prime Minister.

Social, economic, and political reforms:

Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru has made a lot of changes in the social, economic, and political fields. He took steps to get rid of our country’s caste system. He changed the laws, which helped to make India a better place. He also made the rules so that discrimination based on caste would be against the law and could be punished. He knew that developing the country’s systems was important for its growth, and he knew how to do it because he had studied about it in England. So, he played a big role in making our country’s government better.

Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru also wanted the government to have full control over the country’s economy. He focused on and pushed for changes that would help the country’s economy grow, such as land ownership, economic plans, trade policy, international trade, etc., so that our country could move forward.

How does the government pay tribute to Pt Jawaharlal Nehru?

The Indian government put pictures of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru on the country’s coins and stamps. His picture was also printed on tickets used to buy train rides. People in India celebrate Children’s Day every year on Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru’s birthday, which is November 14. After he died, this day was moved from November 20 to November 14, which was the date set by the United Nations. All of this is done by the Indian government to honor our country’s beloved first prime minister.

As a Writer:

He started creating his own material after discovering a passion for Buddhist and Hindu texts, which led to him doing so. He used the time he spent in jail to write a number of works, several of which went on to achieve widespread fame.

Books such as An Autobiography, Letters from a Father to His Daughter, The Discovery of India, and many others like this. Therefore, he was an accomplished writer and author, and he had a keen interest in the craft of writing.

He was India’s Prime Minister for 16 years and 286 days, which is longer than anyone else. As External Affairs Minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru was very important. He also did a lot to shape the modern Indian government and political culture, as well as the country’s sound foreign policy.

In the last days of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru’s life, his health starts to get worse. He suffers some strokes. Then, between 23 and 26 days after arriving in New Delhi, he woke up the next morning with severe back pain, asked for help, had a stroke, fell down, and didn’t wake up again. He died at 1:44 p.m. on May 27, 1964.

The achievements that have been achieved under Nehru’s direction during the course of his leadership continue to set a fantastic example for both the present and upcoming generations of India’s political class. His ideas and values have been very significant in making the country strong and stable, and they continue to be so in making the country stronger and more stable.

Nehru was challenged with a large number of challenges, yet he was able to win over all of them and emerge as an effective chief executive of the newly formed nation. His thoughts and beliefs have had a significant impact on the way society is organized and functions. He was always of the opinion that people should progress while taking into account the various cultures and religions that exist among them.

Restoring the Past Won’t Liberate Palestine

An illustration of two faces atop the ground. A small white person stands on top of one of the faces.

Amid the graphic images, fierce polemics and endless media criticism that have dominated my social media feeds since the war in Gaza began late last year, I noticed a seemingly bizarre subplot emerge: skin cancer in Israel.

“You are not Indigenous if your body cannot tolerate the area’s climate,” one such post read, highlighting outdated news coverage claiming that Israelis had unusually high rates of skin cancer. (They do not .) Skin cancer, these posts claimed, was proof that Israeli Jews were not native to the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea but are in fact white Europeans with no ancestral connection to the region, enactors of one of the worst crimes of the modern age: settler colonialism.

On one level, the claims about skin cancer — like similar ones about Israeli cuisine and surnames — are silly social media talking points from keyboard warriors slinging hashtags, hyped up on theories of liberation based on memes of Frantz Fanon quotes taken out of context. In the context of the ongoing slaughter in Gaza — more than 28,000 people dead, mostly women and children — such posturing may seem trivial. But even, or maybe especially, at this moment, when things are so grim, the way we talk about liberation matters. And I find this kind of talk revealing of a larger trend on the left these days, emanating from important and complex theories in the academy but reflected in crude and reductive forms in the memes and slogans at pro-Palestine protests — an increasingly rigid set of ideas about the interloping colonizer and the Indigenous colonized. In this analysis, there are two kinds of people: those who are native to a land and those who settle it, displacing the original inhabitants. Those identities are fixed, essential, eternal.

I have spent much of my life and career living and working among formerly colonized peoples attempting to forge a path for themselves in the aftermath of empire. The rapacious carving up of much of the globe and the genocide and enslavement of millions of people by a handful of European powers for their own enrichment was the great crime of early modernity. The icons who threw off the yoke of colonial oppression — including Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah, India’s Jawaharlal Nehru and Fanon — were my childhood heroes, and they remain my intellectual lodestars. But I sometimes struggle to recognize their spirit and ideas in the way we talk about decolonization today, with its emphasis on determining who is and who is not an Indigenous inhabitant of the lands known as Israel and Palestine.

A good deal of the antipathy toward Israeli Jews today is undergirded and enabled, I believe, by something that to some ears sounds progressive: the idea that people and lands that have been colonized must be returned to their indigenous peoples and original state. But that belief, when taken literally, is at best a kind of left-wing originalism, a utopian politics that believes the past answers all the questions of the present. At worst it is a left-wing echo to the ancestral fantasies of the far right, in which who is allowed to live in which places is a question of the connection of one’s blood to a particular patch of soil.

Implicit in the emphasis on indigeneity is a promised restoration, albeit one of a very different sort from the imperial fantasies of Vladimir Putin or the gender obsessions of Ron DeSantis. Decolonization “is not converting Indigenous politics to a Western doctrine of liberation; it is not a philanthropic process of ‘helping’ the at-risk and alleviating suffering; it is not a generic term for struggle against oppressive conditions and outcomes,” as the scholars Eve Tuck and K. Wayne Yang write in an influential academic paper published in 2012, “ Decolonization Is Not a Metaphor .”

“The broad umbrella of social justice may have room underneath for all of these efforts,” Tuck and Yang write. “By contrast, decolonization specifically requires the repatriation of Indigenous land and life.”

There is perhaps no more vexed question in the world than how this might play out in Israel and Palestine. There is no doubt that Palestinians long lived in the land that became Israel. Jews have deep historical roots in that land, but the vast majority of the people who established the state of Israel came from elsewhere, fleeing genocide and persecution in Europe and forced into exile by Middle Eastern and North African nations. It is impossible to separate Israel’s birth from the dying gasps of the old colonial order. It was, in the indelible phrase of Arthur Koestler, “one nation solemnly promised to a second nation the country of a third.”

In theory, decolonization includes the disestablishment of the very idea of land as property, of modern notions like nationhood and citizenship. In theory, it is a chance to do it all over and replay history with the benefit of indigenous ideas and traditions to guide us.

But history doesn’t work that way. People do bad things. Other people resist those bad things. Humans invent and discover; they create and destroy. There is no going backward to some mythic state. There is no restoration. The events that unfold over time shape the land and the people who live on it, and those people shape one another in manifold ways, some brutal and destructive, some generative and loving. But time and experience ensure that nothing can ever be the same as it was before the last thing that happened.

A s I was thinking through these issues, I came across a series of social media posts about settler colonialism by Iyad el-Baghdadi, a Palestinian writer and activist whose work has been an indispensable guide for me in the present crisis. I sent him an email, and he agreed to speak with me to expand on his ideas. I explained my unease at the reliance on concepts like indigeneity to decide who has a just claim to live in a place.

“Don’t take these people seriously,” he told me, though he made clear that he has some sympathy for those who espouse such views. “They’re not really motivated by some kind of ideology. They’re really motivated by emotion and they kind of slap together an ideology to satisfy their emotion, but then emotions by their very nature cannot be satisfied that way.” He told me that sometimes when he hears people talk about Palestinian liberation it is almost like they are expecting a literal reversal of 1948, what Palestinians call the “nakba,” or catastrophe, of their expulsion upon the founding of the state of Israel.

“It is as if there will be this magical moment and all our villages are going to appear out of the earth. And then 75 years of settler colonialism is going to disappear,” he said. “But this romantic idea is really unmourned trauma.”

Questions of indigeneity are simply a distraction, he said, from the real challenge of building Palestinian political power. “I don’t care if they’re settlers or not,” he said. “The solution is not to constantly try to moralize. The solution is to fix the power imbalance. The future needs to be rooted in the truth that all human beings are equal, and that Jewish life is equivalent to Palestinian life, and that we can together work on a future in which nobody is oppressed and we can address the inequities of the past.”

Eventually our conversation came around to Fanon, whose writings on political violence are now once again in vogue, taken up with alacrity by the activists focused on undoing settler colonialism — even, or perhaps especially, if it requires bloodshed.

“People are really using him to lend some kind of intellectual legitimacy for political violence,” he said. “And I find that really, really obscene. When I read Fanon, I think he’s talking about power. He’s not really talking about violence. Violence is a weak person’s idea of what power is.”

Fanon, a psychiatrist turned anticolonial political figure, had a lot to say about violence. In his book “The Wretched of the Earth” he wrote that “violence is a cleansing force. It frees the native from his inferiority complex and from his despair and inaction; it makes him fearless and restores his self-respect.”

There is no question that Fanon, who devoted much of his short life to the often violent struggle to liberate Algeria from French rule, believed that violence was a legitimate tool to fight oppression. But what did he actually mean, and did he write these words as a physician’s description or a revolutionary’s prescription?

The writer Adam Shatz argues in “The Rebel’s Clinic,” his terrific new biography of Fanon , that “cleansing” is actually a misleading translation: “The English translation of ‘la violence désintoxique’ as ‘violence is a cleansing force’ is somewhat misleading, suggesting an almost redemptive elimination of impurities,” Shatz writes. “Fanon’s more clinical word choice indicates the overcoming of a state of drunkenness, the stupor induced by colonial subjugation.”

Indeed, what violence restored to the colonial subject was agency, the ability to shake off the role imposed by the colonizer and begin to act of his or her own volition. Colonized people may harbor fantasies of returning to a long-lost past, before their land was stolen. But it is equally likely that they, like Fanon, want to build a new and different future.

Fanon had a lot to say about history. Shatz’s book details Fanon’s early infatuation with the romantic ideas of thinkers like Léopold Sédar Senghor, the poet and anticolonial leader who would become Senegal’s first president. Senghor and some of his generation of Black colonial intellectuals posited an idealized and mystical pre-colonial African past that needed to be unearthed and revived.

Eventually, Fanon rejected these backward-looking ideas: “In no way do I have to dedicate myself to reviving a Black civilization unjustly ignored,” he wrote in his book “Black Skin, White Masks.” “I will not make myself the man of any past.”

A nd yet. How can we not look to the past to try to find a path through the present, just as we look to the future as the repository of some long-awaited justice that never quite arrives? This human propensity leaves us stuck between memory and dreams, neither of which tell us all that much about our present difficulties.

We think understanding the past with hindsight will somehow save us. But what is that hindsight? A perfect knowledge of the past that was not accessible or visible to those experiencing it. Somehow, we believe, the future will be untainted by the passions of the present, and able to see what unfolded more clearly. In practice, it actually works the other way — we see the past through the prism of the present, and often in the blinding light of our hopes for the future, eliding and emphasizing the role of the past as suits our present purpose.

A theory of decolonization that seeks to move backward will inevitably run up against this human tendency. But it also, perhaps unwittingly, strips the formerly colonized of the very self-determination they seek.

Olúfémi Táíwò, a Nigerian philosopher at Cornell University, argued in his book “Against Decolonisation: Taking African Agency Seriously” that the Manichaean divide between the colonized and the colonizer and the rejection of everything emanating from the latter stripped the colonized of agency by denying them the creative freedom to make something new out of the experience of being oppressed. “It must and does foreclose the possibility that the colonized could find anything of worth in the life and thought of the colonizer which they could repurpose for their own societies, both during and after colonialism,” he wrote.

Africans, Táíwò argues, should be able to take what they want from modernity and use it, like any free people, to invent their own future, not look backward to a past that in any case can never be recovered.

The agonizing months since Oct. 7 have made it seem all but impossible for any of us to imagine what kind of hopeful future might be invented out of the present nightmare. We have reached a terrifying new stage of the war with the looming assault on Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of civilians have fled Israeli bullets and bombs only to find themselves once again in the cross hairs with nowhere left to run. But generations of Palestinian activists and intellectuals, people who have perhaps the greatest reason to find sustenance in fantasies of a mythic past free of Israel and its people, do not dream of rolling back time.

“Successful liberation movements were successful precisely because they employed creative ideas, original ideas, imaginative ideas, whereas less successful movements (like ours, alas) had a pronounced tendency to formulas and an uninspired repetition of past slogans and past patterns of behavior,” wrote the Palestinian American scholar Edward Said. “The future, like the past, is built by human beings. They, and not some distant mediator or savior, provide the agency for change.”

Said was perhaps the most influential intellectual heir to Fanon, and in a tragic twist, he too died of leukemia, the same cancer that killed Fanon at the age of 36. Both of them died without seeing their lifelong struggles won. But both went to their graves as modern, cosmopolitan men, engaged with the world not as they wished it was but as they found it, chronicled it and shaped it toward their unshakable vision of self-determination and freedom for the colonized peoples of the world. Liberation requires invention, not restoration. If history tells us anything it is this: Time moves in one direction, forward.
