Band 9 essay about the importance of job satisfaction

by Manjusha Nambiar · December 6, 2016

As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important element of individual well-being.

What factors contribute to job satisfaction? How realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction for all workers?

Here is a sample response.

Most of us now spend a great deal of our time at the workplace. If we love our work, we will get to spend much of our lives doing things that we enjoy doing. Because of this reason job satisfaction plays an important role in ensuring our wellbeing. In fact, people who are satisfied with their jobs are healthier and happier.

Job satisfaction means different things to different people. For some, it means earning a six figure salary or occupying a higher level position in an organization. A lot of people equate wealth and social status with happiness and wellness. They don’t mind spending their entire lives at the workplace provided that they receive handsome salaries.

Some people may have well-paying jobs but they are still unhappy because they don’t like what they are doing. There are also people who find satisfaction in helping others. Money does not motivate them. They are driven by their passion to change the world. Most of them will readily work for an NGO or some other charity.

While it is true that everyone seeks job satisfaction, few people actually manage to find it. The rest are simply spending their time at the workplace with the sole objective of earning a livelihood. They don’t like their job, but they can’t quite it either because they need money to support their family. The vast majority of workers, unfortunately, belong to this category. This dissatisfaction with their work and the lack of motivation to do it eventually lead to various health problems in these people. Several studies have shown that work related stress is a major cause of health problems in adults.

To conclude, everyone seeks job satisfaction, but very few people manage to find it. While job satisfaction can mean money or social status for some people, others find happiness in doing things that they enjoy.

IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer :

Since most people spend their adult life working, it is vital that they have a fulfilling career. This essay will first discuss which elements lead to job satisfaction and it will then address the question of how likely it is that everyone can be happy with their job.

There are several factors that contribute to job satisfaction. Firstly, a good remuneration package is on the top of the list. The main reason for believing this is that a good income will enable one to live comfortably and securely. It is also possible to say that proper on-job training is necessary to help workers develop their intellectual and professional abilities.

Furthermore, there are social reasons interwoven with job satisfaction such as proximity of work location to one’s home and suitable leave policy. One good illustration of this is the fierce competition exhibited by candidates applying to jobs in companies that are known to provide numerous benefits and development opportunities for its potential employees.

However, every person has a different motivation for doing a job hence it is not realistic for everyone to feel satisfied with their jobs . This is because people’s expectations from their employers are usually much higher. Employees and workers almost always, complain that the benefits they are receiving are not sufficient to quite meet all their needs. A particularly good example here is a study conducted in an automotive factory in Thailand, and although the factory provided a very competitive package, 40% of the workers were still unhappy.

To sum up, the aspects of job satisfaction are very diverse, from income, to on-job training, to work location and leave policies. Finally, it may not be possible for every employee to be satisfied with their job as everyone's priorities and expectations are different.

Employees spend their time at their offices for long hours especially if the company where they work offers them incentives. In this passage, I am going to illustrate the elements that lead to job fulfillment. Staying at the office after the scheduled working hours can be attributed to plethora of factors such as the captivating office decoration, the affectionate behavior of superiors, incentives and the job nature as well. For example, if the employee is given sufficient remuneration, then he will be encouraged and loyal. While performing tasks for extended hours can be tiresome for some employees as they directly affect the eyes and the back, companies started to provide their workers with protected screens that may reduce the sharpness of the light as well as medical chairs which help their backs to relax. Not only the laborers will be a workaholic and devote their time at the company premises for longer periods, but also they can be productive in a well-equipped office environment. Conversely, employees tend to escape earlier if they feel that they are not given privileges. According to some research which had been conducted at the first half of 2019 by the Institute of Human Resources, it was proved that employees reluctantly performed tasks if they had not been given enough wages. Therefore, the highest level of benefits they get, the more hours they spend in performing their duties. For instance, the moment I got promoted with 20% salary increment, my loyalty and performance were positively affected. In conclusion, taking care of employees and treating them as a great asset for the company by meeting their demands in terms of incentives and remunerations would encourage them to work for longer hours, hence, became more productive.

IELTS Writing task 2 | Job satisfaction

dream job, application, location

WRITING TASK 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important element of individual wellbeing.

What factors contribute to job satisfaction?

How realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction for all workers?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

There is no doubt that job satisfaction plays a significant role in a person’s health and wellbeing. If a person spends a large amount of time doing a job that they do not enjoy it can have a detrimental effect on their health both physically and mentally. However, I believe there are some common factors that lead to job satisfaction, but I do not think is achievable for everyone.

Firstly, a supportive employer can be a major factor for employees. If people feel appreciated at work with incentive schemes based on performance or career development opportunities, they will find their job more rewarding Colleagues also contribute to job satisfaction as a negative working environment can lead to anxiety and poor performance which could ultimately create more problems in the workplace. Although many people would consider money as the main factor for a satisfying job, I believe interest is the most significant. If a person really enjoys what they do, then they will be satisfied at work regardless of the salary.

Unfortunately, job satisfaction is not possible for all workers. In developing countries, the education level is often poor so that limits what kind of job people can get, often the only jobs available are  blue collar manufacturing jobs. In these countries, poverty is a serious issue and people need to take any job they can just to provide for their family. In addition, due to the recent global pandemic, many people have lost their jobs, so it is not unusual to find someone with a university degree delivering packages for Amazon. In these circumstances, job satisfaction is likely to be low as working is just a means of making money.

In conclusion, although there are some common factors that lead to job satisfaction these will vary from person to person. However, in many situations people have no choice but to take any job they can get to survive, job satisfaction is not even a consideration.

Essay analysis

The introduction is clear and the writer has clearly outlined what ideas are going to follow in the essay.

For some topics you may have a lot of ideas and it will not be possible to include them all.  In this essay the writer has chosen to include some ‘common factors’ in the first paragraph that most people would probably agree would provide job satisfaction, however, there could be other factors more relevant for you.  The second paragraph deals with the second part of the question in more global terms using developing countries and the recent global pandemic as examples to show that in these circumstances job satisfaction is unlikely. Both paragraphs have clear ideas and transitional phrases have been used effectively. The conclusion summarises the main ideas of the essay and gives a final comment on the topic.

All aspects of grammar and lexis are controlled with precision throughout the response and there is good use of collocations both general and specific. To become a better writer and achieve a higher band score it is important to use collocations. Have a look at our article on the importance of collocations here  https://www.paramountielts.com/collocations-blog/  and the academic collocation list here  https://paramountielts.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/AcademicCollocationList.pdf
