Thoughtful and insightful quotes about the power of music as therapy and the ways in which it is good for all of us to open up about mental-health concerns.

National Stress Awareness Day Power Of Music featured image web optimised 1000

Musicians as prominent as Adele, Kendrick Lamar , Taylor Swift and Bruce Springsteen have spoken publicly about mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, and all can attest to the power of music to help with such problems.

Numerous scientific and psychological studies have shown that music can lift our moods, combat depression, improve blood flow in ways similar to statins, lower levels of stress-related hormones such as cortisol, and ease pain. Music can improve the outcomes for patients after surgery. A recent study reported in Nature Neuroscience even demonstrated that levels of the feel-good chemical dopamine in the brain rose by up to nine percent when people listened to music they enjoyed.

Though the idea of music as a balm is nothing new – more than 400 years ago, William Shakespeare said that “music can raze out the written troubles of the brain” – people are turning to music as a way to deal with the stresses of modern digital-driven life. Matt Haig, the author of the inspirational book Reasons To Stay Alive , recently set some of the words of his book to music on an album made with former Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows.

In his book, Haig says that the way to escape time is music, and that sentiment would echo with the acclaimed composer, pianist and producer Max Richter. The West German-born Brit guest-curated the Peaceful Music playlist, co-created between Universal Music Group and Apple Music, precisely to help people find “a useful place to rest” amid the frenzy of modern life.

Below are 15 inspirational and thoughtful quotes about the power of music as therapy and the ways in which it is good for all of us to open up about mental health concerns.

Listen to the Peaceful Music playlist exclusively on Apple Music .

“Music has healing power. It has the ability to take people out of themselves for a few hours.” Elton John , who says we should never be afraid of saying three simple words: “I need help.”

“The idea of music having a use goes back centuries. The beginnings of written-down music was the liturgy, and obviously that has a connection with the idea of a meditative state and all of that. So music can really be useful in that way.” Max Richter, guest curator of the Peaceful Music playlist

“Music doesn’t get in. Music is already in. Music simply uncovers what is there, makes you feel emotions that you didn’t necessarily know you had inside you, and runs around waking them all up. A rebirth of sorts.” Author Matt Haig, in How to Stop Time

“I think any time I’ve ever got down or ever felt low the one thing that picks me up from that is writing a song about it. At least you’ve got a positive experience out of a bad experience.” Singer Ed Sheeran

“Music should be an essential part of every analysis.” Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung (1875-1961)

“Analysis did me a lot of good. I think that self-confrontation is a good thing, whether you do it by yourself in solitude, or whether you do it in the presence of another person.” Joni Mitchell , from her autobiography In Her Own Words

“When music is needed, it’s really there and it serves a purpose.” Composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, whose music, including “Flight From The City,” is featured on the Peaceful Music playlist

“Music can lift us out of depression or move us to tears – it is a remedy, a tonic, orange juice for the ear. But for many of my neurological patients, music is even more – it can provide access, even when no medication can, to movement, to speech, to life. For them, music is not a luxury, but a necessity.” Oliver Sacks, best-selling author and professor of neurology at NYU School Of Medicine

“Music is life itself.” Louis Armstrong , jazz trumpeter (1901-1971)

“One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” Bob Marley (1945-1981)

“Each time you play music, it becomes new. This is one way I’ve been thinking about memory and the present, past and future times all fitting together. I called it an exquisite moment. It’s an exquisite moment because the audience and the situation of performing allows us, requires us, to think of that moment. Very often we go through life without thinking about that moment. We talk about mindfulness but we’re not very mindful, most of us.” Composer Philip Glass, whose composition “Echorus” is included in the Peaceful Music playlist

“Mental illness is not something that you have to live with for the rest of your life. It is not something that will stop you being part of the workforce. But you do have to talk to people about it and you do have to get help. And you can recover.” Adam Clayton, bassist with U2

“I suffer from a mental illness. I suffer from PTSD. I’ve never told anyone that before, so here we are. But the kindness that’s shown to me by doctors as well as my family, and my friends, it’s really saved my life.” Lady Gaga , talking in 2016 about the mental effects of a sexual assault she suffered as a teenager

“We are the generation that’s watched several other generations of musicians turn to drugs and turn to excess and coping mechanisms that have destroyed them. And there are so many high-profile people recently who’ve taken their own lives. We have a responsibility to talk about mental health and to remove the stigma.” Singer James Blake, talking in July 2018

“Music does a lot of things for a lot of people. It’s transporting, for sure. It can take you right back, years back, to the very moment certain things happened in your life. It’s uplifting, it’s encouraging, it’s strengthening.” The late, great singer Aretha Franklin

47 Music Quotes That Celebrate the Magic of Sound and Rhythm

Without music everything would be dull and pointless. Here are 30 music quotes that capture the magic of sound and rhythm.

No matter what genre you prefer, music is part of our lives. Without it, everything would be dull and pointless. Songs convey emotion; they tell stories. Time stops when we’re listening to good music, our hearts open and we let ourselves get carried away. The following music quotes go a long way to capture that sentiment.

Music is an old-time healer, and a friend that never lets us down. It brings us together, and lifts us up. If we want to vent our feelings , music is often the best therapy.

Music Revolution | 100+ Famous Quotes About Music

Yiannis Kalliantas Quotes artists , musicians

Out of all the art that the human kind has devised, music is the most direct and the closest one to our life’s pace. Even today, the sound of music unites, makes thousands of people hum a tune sung live at a concert, and is one of the principal types of art used for actual healing. Nietzsche said that ‘without music, life would be a mistake’ and Leonard Bernstein pointed out that ‘music can name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable’ . As a medium, music can be considered as vital as the air we breathe. No wonder why so many famous people emphasized the importance that this type of artistic expression has for the entire mankind. Karen Danao

Hi, I’m Karen , a content curator and writer for Quote Ambition; I’m also a marketing and advertising professional. Beyond the keyboard and the screen, I’m someone who’s out to enjoy every bit that life has to offer!

Poetry, philosophy, history, and movies are all topics I love writing about! However, my true passion is in traveling, photography, and finding common ground to which everyone from different cultures can relate.

With the many places I’ve been to, I found that love, inspiration, and happiness are some things that bring people together. No matter how different we are on the outside, I’m a true believer that our emotions don’t lie; if you dig deep into our psyche, we’re all the same inside.

This belief was further amplified when I joined Quote Ambition. Through the quotes I’ve read, collected, organized, and written about, I found that humans are resilient, creative, and compassionate.

We take from each others’ hearts and courage, and it’s through our individual experiences that we learn how to rise above our challenges and pain. In so many ways, Quote Ambition is a platform that allows people from all over the world to gain the inspiration they need anytime, anywhere!

162 Inspiring Quotes About Music to Make Your Heart Sing

There’s nothing quite like music to give you the feels! Music unites cultures, creating social cohesion. It transcends language, geography, religion, and cultural barriers. No matter where you go in the world, music is understood.

I remember when I was traveling through Europe a few years ago – it was when the Spanish song Despacito was at the height of its popularity. Although I didn’t understand the words, the song captured my heart, with its beautiful rhythm and melody. Interestingly enough, I heard the song played in every European country that I visited, although Spanish wasn’t spoken in any of those countries. In Venice, an old busker played Despacito on the violin, in the Piazza San Marco. Music is, indeed, powerful!

But music does more than this. Studies have shown that it can improve your well-being, by reducing stress and possibly even lowering blood pressure. In an instant, music can take you back to times past, bringing back memories and evoking nostalgia. Isn’t that why we have songs that are the soundtrack to certain chapters in our lives?

If you love music as much as we do, then this collection of quotes will bring out your love of music even more! These quotes highlight just how wonderful, powerful, and empowering, music can be.

Black History Month 2024: African Americans and the Arts

A woman reads a book

The national theme for Black History Month 2024 is “ African Americans and the Arts .”

Black History Month 2024 is a time to recognize and highlight the achievements of Black artists and creators, and the role they played in U.S. history and in shaping our country today.

To commemorate this year’s theme, we’ve gathered powerful quotes about learning, culture and equality from five historic Black American authors, teachers and artists who made a significant impact in the Arts, education ― and the nation.

  Making history

“Real education means to inspire people to live more abundantly, to learn to begin with life as they find it and make it better.” – Carter G. Woodson, Author, Journalist, Historian and Educator, 1875-1950

Known as the “Father of Black History,” Carter G. Woodson was primarily self-taught in most subjects. In 1912, he became the second Black person to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard.

He is the author of more than 30 books, including “T he Mis-Education of the Negro. ”

Carter G. Woodson dedicated his life to teaching Black History and incorporating the subject of Black History in schools. He co-founded what is now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, Inc. (ASALH) . In February 1926, Woodson launched the first Negro History Week , which has since been expanded into Black History Month.

Providing a platform

“I have created nothing really beautiful, really lasting, but if I can inspire one of these youngsters to develop the talent.” – Augusta Savage, Sculptor, 1892-1962

An acclaimed and influential sculptor of the Harlem Renaissance, Augusta Savage was a teacher and an activist who fought for African American rights in the Arts. She was one out of only four women, and the only Black woman, commissioned for the 1939 New York World’s Fair. She exhibited one of her most famous works, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which she named after the hymn by James Weldon Johnson, sometimes referred to as the Black National Anthem. Her sculpture is also known as “ The Harp, ” renamed by the fair’s organizers.

Raising a voice

“My mother said to me ‘My child listen, whatever you do in this world no matter how good it is you will never be able to please everybody. But what one should strive for is to do the very best humanly possible.’” – Marian Anderson, American Contralto, 1897-1993

Marian Anderson broke barriers in the opera world. In 1939, she performed at the Lincoln Memorial in front of a crowd of 75,000 after the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) denied her access to the DAR Constitution Hall because of her race. And in 1955, Marian Anderson became the first African American to perform at the Metropolitan Opera. She sang the leading role as Ulrica in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera.

Influencing the world

“The artist’s role is to challenge convention, to push boundaries, and to open new doors of perception.” – Henry Ossawa Tanner, Painter, 1859-1937

In 1877, he enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts , where he was the only Black student. In 1891, Tanner moved to Paris to escape the racism he was confronted with in America. Here, he painted two of his most recognized works, “ The Banjo Lesson” and “ The Thankful Poor of 1894. ”

In 1923, Henry O. Tanner was awarded the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government, France’s highest honor.

At about seven years old, Phillis Wheatley was kidnapped from her home in West Africa and sold into slavery in Boston. She started writing poetry around the age of 12 and published her first poem, “ Messrs. Hussey and Coffin ,” in Rhode Island’s Newport Mercury newspaper in 1767.

While her poetry spread in popularity ― so did the skepticism. Some did not believe an enslaved woman could have authored the poems. She defended her work to a panel of town leaders and became the first African American woman to publish a book of poetry. The panel’s attestation was included in the preface of her book.

Phillis Wheatley corresponded with many artists, writers and activists, including a well-known 1 774 letter to Reverand Samson Occom about freedom and equality.

Ai can now master your music—and it does shockingly well, suddenly, everyone can master their own music..

Nate Anderson - Feb 6, 2024 12:00 pm UTC

AI can now master your music—and it does shockingly well

It was just a stray remark at the end of a guitar lesson last fall.

My teacher is a veteran musician whose band has had both major label and indie record deals, and he loves the analog, the human, the vintage, the imperfect. So it didn't surprise me to learn that he still likes to mix tracks with an old analog board or that he has a long-time "mastering guy" who finalizes the band's albums.

What did surprise me was the comment that he had for some time been testing LANDR, the online music service that offers AI-powered mastering. Pay a monthly fee, upload a well-mixed track, and in a minute, the system spits back a song that hits modern loudness standards and is punched up with additional clarity, EQ, stereo width, and dynamics processing.

After mastering, the end result should sound "more like a record," but this stage of the music-making process has always required subtle value judgments, as every change operates on the entire stereo track. And well-trained humans excel at subtle value judgments.

So I was expecting some line about the slight edge that ears and hands still held over our machine overlords. Instead, I heard: "In the last year, LANDR has improved so much that it now sounds as good as, or in some cases better than, things we've had mastered professionally."

AI-powered mastering systems allow endless tweaking (mastering engineers generally offer a specific number of revisions). They return results within a minute (mastering engineers might need up to a week). They are comparatively cheap (mastering engineers might charge anywhere from $30 up to a few hundred bucks a track, depending on their experience). And now they can sound better than humans? This statement, coming from a guy who won't buy a guitar made after 1975, was high praise indeed.

I flagged the remark as something to investigate later.

A few weeks after our conversation, Apple released version 10.8 of Logic Pro, its flagship digital audio workstation (DAW) and the big sibling to GarageBand. Stuffed inside the update was Mastering Assistant , Apple's own take on AI-powered mastering. If you were a Logic user, you suddenly got this capability for free—and you could run it right inside your laptop, desktop, or iPad.

So between my guitar teacher and Apple, the consensus seemed to be that AI-powered mastering was in fact A Thing That Could Now Be Done Well. Which meant I had to try it.

See, in 2023, I built a small home music studio for under a thousand bucks—gear is ridiculously cheap and high quality compared to the old analog era—and taught myself tracking and mix engineering. This was a surprisingly technical process. It took months before I knew my 1176 from my LA-2A or my large condenser from my dynamic mic or my dBFS from my LUFS. Mic placement alone, especially for complex analog instruments like acoustic guitars, took considerable trial and error to get right.

Alongside this engineering boot camp, I began writing songs as part of my long-sublimated desire to don the tight leather pants and bring real rock'n'roll back from the dead. I liked some of my compositions, too—not always a given in this sort of creative endeavor. The lyrics felt clever, the melodies hummable. I began to record.

But something stood in my way. Even as I learned proper technique and my recordings went from "meh" to "now we're talking," they never quite possessed that pro-level radio sheen. How to get it? Many people mumbled "mastering" like it was a dark art, as though some hidden final alchemy would "glue" your track together and lacquer it in a high-gloss finish, and they said this alchemy could only be performed by grizzled mastering engineers working with special mastering compressors and EQs of almost unfathomable complexity.

Great article for the home studio enthusiast. I own Ozone and just used it on a country pop track. I have mixed feelings about Mastering. I work my ass off mixing a track for balance and dynamics and then it goes through Mastering where software or a human will EQ, limit, play with the phase, etc. It's almost insulting, but there's no way around it. The history of mastering is tied to vinyl record production. There are technical limitations to the energy and frequencies that can be pressing into a hot piece of plastic. THAT has been the traditional role of the Mastering Engineer - to tweak an already good mix for the limitations of vinyl. Today, Mastering has just become a race to get it loud and bright at -14 lufs. Don't mind me, I'm just a grumpy old man.

Conspiracy theories swirl around Taylor Swift. These Republican voters say they don’t care

The budding love story featuring music superstar Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce took an unexpected turn into the world of political conspiracy theories as the team heads to the Super Bowl. AP’s Amira Borders has more.

WASHINGTON (AP) — To hear some conservatives on cable news or on social media tell it, Taylor Swift is part of an elaborate plot to help Democrats win the November election.

“I wonder who’s going to win the Super Bowl next month,” wrote former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy in January after the Kansas City Chiefs made the game with a strong performance from tight end Travis Kelce , Swift’s partner. “And I wonder if there’s a major presidential endorsement coming from an artificially culturally propped-up couple this fall.”

Many voters just see that talk as noise to tune out.

Ryan Allstun was wearing a Green Bay Packers hoodie at a recent rally in Lancaster, South Carolina, for GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley. Allstun said he supports former President Donald Trump and wants famous people to keep their politics private. But Allstun doesn’t look to celebrities such as Swift and Kelce for endorsements.

“Couldn’t care less,” he said. “To each their own.”

Many people at recent Republican political events were far more ambivalent about the pop star than some personalities who suggest the media coverage of Swift and Kelce’s relationship is a pretext to boost a potential future endorsement of Democratic President Joe Biden. Some have gone so far as to suggest — some tongue in cheek, others perhaps not — that the U.S. government is running a covert operation involving Swift.

Some Republican strategists think the focus on Swift could hurt the party.

“People just want to like Taylor Swift. They want to be able to watch football and listen to her music and not consider the political implications,” said Matt Gorman, vice president at Targeted Victory, a Republican political consulting firm. “I beg people who care about this to go outside and touch grass. Most everyday people don’t have the time or energy to care.”

Susan Cummins, a Haley supporter who moved to the Charleston, South Carolina, area from New Jersey about two years ago, said her social media feeds have been flooded with coverage of the couple. She considers Swift a “good performer,” but Cummins isn’t a huge fan. She follows the Philadelphia Eagles but doesn’t watch much football.

Cummins is familiar with the conspiracy theory and finds it “really far-fetched” that everything would be “rigged.”

“It just seems over the top to me that there would be all these forces that would do something like this,” Cummins said.

Conspiracy theories gain the widest attention when they target the most well-known figures and institutions. The latest right-wing conspiracy theories blend Swift with claims about the most watched sporting event in the U.S. and a pivotal presidential election, making any intersection of the events ripe for conspiracy theories.

“The good news is people don’t believe in conspiracy theories more than they have in the past. The bad news is that they believe them more than we paid attention to or cared about,” said Joseph Uscinski, a political science professor at the University of Miami who studies conspiracy theories.

“If the right Pied Piper comes along then folks can be mobilized, sometimes with very devastating consequences,” Uscinski said.

Mellissa Best, a Trump supporter from Florence, South Carolina, wasn’t aware of the theories about Swift. But Best said she wouldn’t be surprised if powerful people tried to leverage Swift’s influence to improve Biden’s popularity among young people. Best said that if she had young children, she wouldn’t want them attending Swift’s concerts.

“I believe these leftists will do anything to stay in power,” she said. “It wouldn’t surprise me.”

While Republicans and Democrats believe in conspiracy theories about equally, said Uscinski, Trump “flipped the game on its head” in 2016 and brought conspiratorial thinking to the forefront of conservative politics, making cases such as those against Swift more common because of new incentives in politics.

Swift endorsed Biden in 2020. She also backed former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, a Democrat, in his 2018 run for Senate, which he lost to Sen. Marsha Blackburn, a Republican.

While many of the same political rules apply to a Swift endorsement, one new challenge for Republicans in dismissing the drama is the reality that celebrity culture is now considered a mainstay of American politics.

“Since 2016, for obvious reasons, it’s become difficult for Republicans to credibly make a case that celebrities should stay out of politics,” said David Jackson, a political scientist at Bowling Green State University who studies political endorsements. Jackson said Trump “created a new pathway to the presidency, from celebrity culture right to the Oval Office.”

The conspiracy theories have become an issue in the campaign as well, with Republican lawmakers dismissing the claims about Swift but also the significance of any potential endorsement for the 2024 election.

“Taylor Swift has made a career off of writing songs about picking the wrong man, so I don’t think we should take advice from her now,” said Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump’s 2024 campaign, in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity. Leavitt added that Democrats’ eagerness for a Swift endorsement shows they are “panicking about the prospect of Biden being evicted from the White House.”

Haley told a recent audience that she didn’t understand “what the obsession is.”

“Taylor Swift is allowed to have a boyfriend. Taylor Swift is a good artist. I’ve taken my daughter to Taylor Swift concerts before. To have a conspiracy theory of all of this is bizarre,” she said.

Pollard reported from Columbia, South Carolina.

LE SSERAFIM members talk 'EASY' album, Coachella performance: 'A dream moment'

music topic quotes

No word encapsulates LE SSERAFIM quite like "fearless." After all, the K-pop girl group's name is an anagram for " I'm fearless ."

This message has been a foundation for the quintet. In all that they do, members Kim Chaewon, Sakura, Huh Yunjin, Kazuha and Hong Eunchae (who was absent from this interview) break the visage of fear, paving the way to a distinct, bold brand of confidence.

In the less than two years since their debut, LE SSERAFIM's reach continues to stretch across the globe. " UNFORGIVEN ", their first studio album, marked the group's highest entry on the Billboard 200 chart, peaking in the Top 10. It was also featured among the Best Albums of 2023 by the New York Times. Their last single and first English-language track " Perfect Night " became the LE SSERAFIM's fastest to hit 100 million streams on Spotify. And this year, LE SSERAFIM is set to perform at Coachella , being the only K-pop girl group on the lineup.

While the members may "make it look easy," as their song says, there's more to success behind scenes. LE SSERAFIM's third mini album " EASY ", out now, delves deeper into the members' vulnerabilities and journeys toward self-certainty.

"Up until now, I think we've pushed forward the message that 'I'm fearless.' I think with this album, we get to be a little more transparent about the process of getting to that stage," said Yunjin, 22.

'EASY' explores confidence through vulnerability

LE SSERAFIM's discography has always reflected where they stand at a point in time. Their debut mini album " FEARLESS " introduced the group's identity of unwavering strength, while "UNFORGIVEN" reinforced their courage to push forward.

"We're always trying to be as honest as we can and reflect back on how we feel in the moment and what kind of emotional growth we've gone through since the last album," said Yunjin.

This sentiment follows for "EASY", which serves as combination of LE SSERAFIM's previous albums, she added. "EASY" builds on what the group has done in the past, following the through-line of fearlessness, while adding a sense of depth.

The album's title track reinforces this artistic evolution as LE SSERAFIM sets out to overcome challenges and rise above their anxieties and doubts.

The other tracks also play an integral role in painting the larger image of LE SSERAFIM's current state. " Smart " highlights the group's ambition to grow further, and " Swan Song " unveils their inner struggles and concerns, explained the group's leader, Chaewon, 23.

Artistic expansion through the creative process

Each album has brought new challenges for the members, said Kazuha, 20. But this has allowed them to grow as performers and refine individual skills.

"We're usually known for our synchronized movements in choreography, but this time around, we have a more relaxed version where the members can each show their own style and vibes," she said. "I think it helps expand the possibilities and potential."

Similarly, "EASY" boasts LE SSERAFIM's sonic progression through the variety of genres in its five tracks.

As the members were recording, Sakura, 25, said she noticed "new findings" about their voices. "I think it really helped expand the genre spectrum of LE SSERAFIM," she said.

The members hope to keep evolving, and their upcoming performance at Coachella serves as a chance to do so.

Kazuha said performing at Coachella is "a dream moment" for her.

"It's going to be a big challenge for us, but we want to really grasp this opportunity and grow further as artists. We're going to put our everything into creating an amazing performance there," she said.

Finding strength through challenges

LE SSERAFIM is rooted in its strength. The members may come from varying backgrounds, but they share the same dreams, goals and beliefs in themselves, said Yunjin.

At its core, LE SSERAFIM embodies the duality of fearlessness and its multifaceted nature.

"We all have our doubts and insecurities but I think by accepting those things, and also talking about those things, it elevates and strengthens and empowers our message as being fearless," said Yunjin.

The group doesn't set out to only show the good of being confident. They want to touch on the introspection that comes along with it.

"We don't just want to shed light on the positivity," said Sakura. "(We want to) tell people that there are challenges, there are difficult times but we try to overcome that."

"By telling our FEARNOT and the listeners that we also are not always strong, I hope our fans can believe that they can also do it, whether it's difficult and whether it takes a lot of effort," said Chaewon. "I hope they can be more courageous and then they can be empowered by our songs."
