To eat or not to eat turkey? That is the question these student essays address

If you've ever felt conflicted about whether to eat turkey on Thanksgiving, these "persuasive letter" essays by fourth-graders at Centerville Elementary School will offer some humorous food for thought (no pun intended).

Dear Turkey,

How in the world are you going to make me not eat you? I think I should cook you because I want to keep the tradition going or else my family will be disappointed because they’ve been doing this tradition since any of them were born. By the way, turkey is very healthy for us humans. Also, you have had a long life and you're getting old so I think I should eat you.

I think I should eat you because it’s a tradition on every Thanksgiving that my family does. I have great memories of having turkey at my grandparents house every year, and I want my kids to have those same memories. Every year, we get together and prepare the turkey. Without you, we will be missing that.

Turkey is very healthy, and I need to get more healthy, trust me! You are packed full of lean protein that helps me stay strong to get my work done on the farm. Not many other things have that kind of lean protein.

So, as you can see, I have some really good reasons that you should be eaten. I hope you understand. Maybe if you give me really good reasons not to eat you, I may change my mind, but for now my mind is made up.

Sincerely, Farmer Grace

(by Grace Curts)

Dear Farmer Gobble,

Did you know there are about 466.8 million turkeys in the world? I’m (gobble) a turkey, you’re a farmer, we’re both living things. Let’s just call (gobble) it a day, and you can get a turkey from another place because it is very immoral to eat a turkey from your farm.

Trust me, I do not taste very good. I know you tried to raise me to taste good, but to be honest, you spent more time on the chickens than you did on me! There are many other great tasting and bigger turkeys than me. I think you would enjoy those more.

I am also a mother of 3 beautiful baby turkeys. If you eat me, they will be on their own and will not be raised right. Children need their mother!

Here’s a thought; you should (gobble) think about your family (gobble). How would you like it if someone ate one of your (gobble) sisters or brothers or anyone you love?

I really think you should think about this some more. Do you really want a turkey that doesn’t taste good? Will you be ok if you take my children’s mother away from them? Can you live with that? I trust you will do the right thing.

Sincerely, Turkey Izzy

(by Izzy Butler)

Dear Farmers,

Did you know that 46 million people eat turkey each year? Because I’m a turkey, I believe that farmers should maybe have ham instead of turkey for Thanksgiving dinner.

One reason you should not have turkey for Thanksgiving is that turkey is not very healthy. The reason turkey is unhealthy is because it has a lot of fat and chicken does not. Turkeys are unhealthy.

How much does turkey cost? Turkeys cost $1 a pound. Turkeys don’t have a lot of meat on them. Only 40% of a turkey is edible, which is about 10 pounds. There isn’t as much meat on a turkey as there is on a cow.

I understand that people like turkey for Thanksgiving, but there are only 17 eggs (on average) in a turkey's nest. Forty-six million turkeys die each year. I don’t want to die, so why don’t you eat something other than turkey this year for Thanksgiving.

I believe for Thanksgiving farmers should not eat turkey. Turkey is a bad choice because it is very unhealthy, there isn’t a lot of meat on a turkey, and although people like turkey for Thanksgiving, too many turkeys die each year. That is why you shouldn’t eat turkey on Thanksgiving day.

Sincerely, Reese Marshall, a Turkey

More: Will Black Friday this year look anything like it used to?

Dear Farmer,

Did you know that there are more than 466 million turkeys in the world? The farmer is going to eat me, a turkey, tomorrow for Thanksgiving and I'm trying to convince the famer not to eat me!

Forty-six million turkeys get eaten every year! YIKES! I think people should not eat turkey on Thanksgiving because turkeys carry disease like avian pox. You could eat a chicken instead! It is way better than for your health. You could choke on a bone!!

There is lots of waste on Thanksgiving! A lot of people don't even like turkey. Nineteen percent of people in the world don’t like turkey. You and your family probably don't even like turkey!

You shouldn’t eat turkey on Thanksgiving! It can be bad for you or you can even catch a disease. Plus, I bet you don’t even like turkey!

Sincerely, Josie the Turkey

(by Josie Saylor)

Dear Farmer Bob,

Hello! I’m a turkey. My name is BOB. Yeah, you heard that right. My farmer’s name is also Bob. This is why you should eat chicken instead of turkey for Thanksgiving.

First, did you know that chicken is better for you than turkey? Also, turkeys are WAY more intelligent than chickens. We live in groups unlike chickens (they just look like they do). Heck, they can’t even talk!

Second, last time I saw a wild turkey was when I escaped and the turkey was me! There aren't that many wild turkeys anymore, although there are some in Glenn Miller Park. When the first Thanksgiving happened, there were lots of wild turkeys. Chickens won’t go extinct if you eat one.

Third, you can buy turkey any time of the year. Just go to the store and buy some. Yeah, it might not taste the same, but it’s the same bird. I just think you shouldn’t put in ALL that work, like raising me and feeding me for something that you can go buy at the store.

Ok, in case you already forgot, I think you should eat chickens instead of turkeys. They are better for you, turkeys are smarter, and there are way chickens than turkeys.

Sincerely, BOB, the Turkey Thing

(by Hyland Dickerson)

One day I was eating my favorite food then my friend came over and said I will be eaten on  Thanksgiving .I'm a turkey. I think that the farmer can have a different meal like chicken on thanksgiving.

I think that chicken is healthier than turkey. Chicken is healthier than turkey because turkey has a lot of meat and fat. Chicken is healthier than turkey.

I think you should eat chicken rather than turkey because turkey has bone you can choke on. Turkey has a bigger bone than chicken and turkey are easier to choke on. Turkey has bone you can choke on.

I know you think that turkey is a tradition for thanksgiving. They think that they had deer, not turkey but they are not sure. I think you shouldn't have turkey on thanksgiving.

I believe that farmers should have different meals like chicken. Turkey is not a good choice because chicken is healthier then turkey and turkey has bigger bones than chicken so it is easier to choke on a turkey bone

(by Madison Ridge)

Did you know that 200 million pounds of turkey is wasted each year? Hello, my name is Bob. I am a turkey. The farmer wants to eat me on Thanksgiving! I think ham should be eaten on Thanksgiving instead.

One reason you shouldn’t eat turkey for Thanksgiving is it is not easy raising a healthy turkey. Turkeys eat berries, fruit, seeds, insects and acorns. On average, it costs $44.19 to raise a turkey. Raising a healthy turkey before Thanksgiving is hard; eat ham instead!

Turkey is bad for you because it can cause food poisoning. One hundred sixty-four people get food poisoning each year from bad turkey. As a result, don't eat turkey.

“I love turkey!” Says Farmer Brown, but I think you can buy turkey at the store all year round. You should not eat me, the turkey, for Thanksgiving!

In conclusion, turkey should not be eaten on Thanksgiving. You should not eat turkey because raising a healthy turkey is difficult, bad turkey can cause food poisoning, and you can buy turkey at the store all year. I don’t want to be eaten!

Turkey Writing Brainstorm

Then we set to work on our first persuasive writings and tried to convince our readers to have something other than turkey on Thanksgiving. As a class, we brainstormed other things people could eat on thanksgiving other than Turkey. As students shared, I made a list on my teaching whiteboard.

Please, Mrs. Suckoo, don’t eat that turkey!

Here are a few samples of our turkey persuasive writing. Everyone had to persuade me not to eat a turkey for Thanksgiving. If you know me at all, you’ll know that I LOVE FOOD, especially a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, so Grade 4 had quite a challenge on their hands. I must also mention that they did a fantastic job, researching facts and finding turkey alternatives for me to eat. But, I must confess, that I did guiltily dine on some delicious turkey on Thanksgiving Day. 🙂 Hopefully you all also had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day.

Don't Touch That Turkey

Thanksgiving idea: persuasive writing.

persuasive writing don't eat the turkey

Description

If you're hunting for an activity to strengthen persuasive-writing skills, set your sights on this one! First, spin a far-fetched tale about a live talking turkey. Explain that each year, the turkey gets fattened up for Thanksgiving dinner. Yet, each year, the bird talks its way out of getting eaten! Help students brainstorm strategies the turkey might be using. Then have each child pretend to be this clever turkey and, on a seven-inch circle of writing paper, describe how it talks its way out of becoming Thanksgiving dinner! To transform his writing into a turkey look-alike, the student colors a copy of the patterns, cuts out the patterns, and glues them to his writing as shown. Mount the fine-feathered tales with the title "Stayin' Alive!"

This is from an exercise teachers do with their students at Thanksgiving time. The kids have to write a letter to a farmer from the point of view of a turkey. They have to convince the farmer not to choose them as the main dish (turkey) for Thanksgiving. This is called "Dear Farmer MackNugget" by Lila, my 4th grader.  Funny!

image

Dear Farmer MackNugget, I am writing you this letter because I don’t think you should eat me. Here are some of the reasons. One, my family will get mad at you. They will make loud noises and try to bite you. They will also call other turkeys and get them to attack you. Two, I get rained on a lot. Because of that, I am so muddy, I’m soaked and I’ve never taken a bath! You don’t want to eat a wet and dirty turkey! Three, I am so sick. I have a cold going through my family and a disease called Turkeyitis. If you eat a turkey with Turkeyitis, you can get it too! That’s all I know about it, but it can give you turkey legs! Four, when did I ever hurt you and I help you! Once, I found your jacket. Remember the time I saved your life?! You did something bad and the police asked me where you lived and I said I have no clue. Five, I’m not ready to be eaten yet. I’m too young. I have a family (alive) and there are so many things I wanted to do as a turkey. I’m also so cute. So please don’t eat me or else! From, One of your skinny turkeys P. S. Don’t eat anyone in my family. (I mean it!)

Note by Mama Lisa: I’m very curious about what the farmer did that was so bad! lol

Happy Thanksgiving!

Essay writing was never my forte as English isn’t my first language but because I was good at math so they put me into Honors English. I really couldn’t be assed with reading King Lear and then writing a 5,000 word paper on it so I looked up essay services and HelpWriting.net was the first link to come up. I was kind of shocked with the quality of the paper they gave me. I received a very articulate and well-written piece of writing for like $20. Recommended it to a bunch of my foreign friends and now they use it too.

Lol, I like this thanksgiving themed persuasive letters. Anyway, I am thinking what would my persuasive letter be about? Hmm, I guess it would be addressed to my professor asking him to provide me with some Master Dissertation Proposal Help so that I can get it approved and start working on my dissertation.

Hi Angela! I tie the activity to the book, Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog. I read the book the day before and make a bit of a fuss over how much the Pigeon loves hot dogs. When it’s time to disguise our turkeys I and tell my class that Tom Turkey has a great idea! He’s going to disguise himself as the Pigeon and convince families to eat hot dogs instead of turkey on Thanksgiving! We talk about how it’s the perfect plan and everyone knows that Pigeon loves hot dogs. Students are reminded of the connection and think it’s so funny! I hope this helps, and thanks so much for asking!
