In recent years bullying has received greater attention in America’s schools, though the issue of bullying is hardly a new one. While many people might consider bullying to be a matter involving physical intimidation and even physical violence, the range of behaviors that comprise bullying are much broader, and include psychological as well as physical intimidation and actions. According to Long and Alexander (2010), bullying “has been defined as hostile actions, recurring over time that is deliberately destructive and occurs without provocation.” Long and Alexander go on to describe bullying as “a subtype of violent behavior,” driving home the point that the emotional impact of bullying is a form of violence even if no actual physical contact is involved. Bullying behaviors are not restricted to schools; they’re also found ion homes and other social settings, and even in the workplace among adults. From a statistical standpoint, however, bullying is especially pervasive among students of middle-school age (Long & Alexander), and as such it is of significant concern to administrators, teachers, and parents. The following paper examines some of the issues and problems associated with school bullying, as well as several possible solutions.

While bullying is associated with a number of problems for victims and those whose role it is to protect them, perhaps the most significant problem involving bullying is simply recognizing it. There are a number of reasons why bullying often goes unnoticed; among these is that many of the behaviors that constitute bullying often take place less overtly than some of the most blatant acts of physical intimidation or violence. Another related problem is that even when some teachers or administrators are aware of bullying, they choose not to intervene. According to one study, 71% of teachers simply ignore most instances of bullying (Schroeder, 1999). Before any effective solutions can be found to bullying it is first necessary for teachers, administrators and parents to know how to identify it and to take it seriously.

Another set of problems associated with bullying are the risk factors that correlate to becoming a potential victim of bullying.Being the victim of bullying is known to be associated with a number of serious risk factors. Studies have determined that there are some cognitive and emotional factors that are commonly seen in victims, which seems to indicate a causal relationship between the two (Brank et al.) These include such conditions as Asperger’s syndrome, a condition on the autism spectrum that undermines an individual’s capacity to understand social norms and respond with socially appropriate behaviors. Children with stronger peer and friend relationships are less likely to be targeted for bullying, though there may be an inverse relationship at work, with victims of bullying retreating from social relationships, thereby affirming the conditions of victim status (Brank et al.). External factors such as socioeconomic background and race are also correlated with bullying, especially when these factors place victims in a social minority at school.

The most serious problems associated with bullying are, of course, the effects on victims. Bullying victims suffer from a range of problems, including higher rates of emotional disturbances such as depression and anxiety (Long & Alexander). Victims of bullying are at a greater risk of committing suicide, using drugs and alcohol, and becoming detached from social settings such as school and family (Brank et al). Victims may develop overt physical symptoms predicated by the stress of victimization, and often report headaches, stomachaches, and other ailments (Collier, 2013). Bullying has clear and often serious effects on victims.

Solving the problem of bullying has no one-size-fits-all solution, and typically requires a multi-pronged approach. The first step towards addressing the issue of bullying is simply raising awareness among responsible adults about the seriousness of the problem. Teachers, administrators, and parents must be given the tools and information to identify bullying behaviors and to understand their negative consequences in order to be able to intervene appropriately. This requires more than just informal conversations, and must include appropriate programs that are provided in an adequate and complete fashion. Settings fort this might include seminars and forums for school officials and teachers, as well as parent-teacher conferences and other settings where parents can be given educational materials and information about available resources.

This can include providing “insulating or protective factors” (Brank et al) to help the victim avoid contact with the bully and to provide positive emotional support. For victims who do not have strong social bonds, parents can help by involving their children in activities of interest or, in some cases, switching schools or finding alternatives to typical education. Victims of bullying may be helped by counseling, and schools should help provide information about the resources available to victims and their families.

While bullying is clearly a serious problem for many victims, it is also clear that bullying behaviors often go unnoticed or ignored by those who are in a position to intervene. Teachers and school officials must learn to identify the range of bullying behaviors and to take these behaviors seriously, while school officials must provide appropriate information for teachers and establish guidelines and policies for students related to anti-bullying measures. Parents must learn to spot the signs that indicate their child is being bullied, and take advantage of the resources and information available to protect and help their children. There is no single solution to stopping bullying, but by working together, parents and schools can help to reduce the problem.

Bullying is a big problem for children and young people that go through it. It knocks their self-esteem and makes them lose their confidence, and can make them dread going to school each day. In extreme cases, young people can become suicidal as a result of bullying, while in other very serious cases, it can get out of hand and lead to the bully murdering their victim. It’s also a huge problem for parents and teachers, because stopping bullying is a hard task and they often don’t know the best ways to go about it. There are three key elements to stopping bullying: educating the bullies, imposing greater sanctions for the bullies, and protecting the victim.

The reason that bullies must be educated is that many of them are not aware of exactly how much they are hurting their victim. In serious cases, it is probably wholly deliberate, but even then, most bullies wouldn’t want their victim to become as suicidal as they have made them. Bullying can come in all sorts of forms and one that affects girls in particular is a group of so-called friends excluding them from everything. In cases like these, if the bullies understood that they had become bullies picking on a victim, they may think twice.

The second way to deal with the bullies is to punish them. This could be the only thing that works for incredibly nasty people, because they will only care when it begins to affect them. Bullying often isn’t taken seriously enough; for example, if you punched a person in the middle of the street you would probably be arrested, but if it happens in a case of bullying, the perpetrator might get a detention. It is important not to allow things to happen in school that they would never get away with out in the real world, and children and young people who don’t have boundaries and sanctions imposed as they grow up may not obey the law as adults.

The final main way to deal with bullying involves working with the victim. Victims of bullying need to know their self-worth so that they don’t just accept what’s happening to them, and need to be taught to be assertive without just being aggressive. They should also be taught that self-defence is allowed when necessary, and should not be punished for it, while it is very important that adults always listen to them and take their concerns very seriously.

All in all, there is no one single solution for bullying, but it’s not good enough to ignore it just because it’s hard to deal with. By using a combination of these three tactics, teachers should be able to stop bullying at school long before it gets out of hand.

Such cooperation between different organizations helps to identify bullying cases and reduce their occurrence. Hence, the school administration needs to start cooperating with local transportation providers and shopping malls.

Furthermore, teachers are the most critical stakeholders, as they have enough power and knowledge to successfully deal with the problem. According to Nassem, “Bullying often happens because of a desire to be popular and to relieve boredom.” The author offers teachers to endeavor to help students to find alternative ways to fulfill their desires. For instance, involving children in exciting activities giving everyone a particular role is a useful technique. Numerous activities promote collaboration and engage students, and teachers have to use them. Thus, the school administration should arrange training sessions for teachers.

Millions of children face bullying every day worldwide, and it adversely affects their academic success, relationships, confidence, self-esteem, and prospects in general. Even though much attention is paid to the problem, the progress in alleviating it is not satisfactory. Governmental policies may be ineffective, and the influence of social activists may be weak. Therefore, everyone has to accept one’s responsibility and adopt practical solutions. For example, employing progressive discipline, creating a positive school climate, spreading posters with slogans, and involving everyone are the steps needed to be taken in every community.

Parents, school staff, and other caring adults have a role to play in preventing bullying. They can: 

  • Help kids understand bullying. Talk about what bullying is and how to stand up to it safely. Tell kids bullying is unacceptable. Make sure kids know how to get help.
  • Keep the lines of communication open . Check in with kids often. Listen to them. Know their friends, ask about school, and understand their concerns.
  • Encourage kids to do what they love. Special activities, interests, and hobbies can boost confidence, help kids make friends, and protect them from bullying behavior.
  • Model how to treat others with kindness and respect.

Help Kids Understand Bullying

Kids who know  what bullying is can better identify it. They can talk about bullying if it happens to them or others. Kids need to know ways to safely stand up to bullying and how to get help.

  • Encourage kids to speak to a trusted adult if they are bullied or see others being bullied. The adult can give comfort, support, and advice, even if they can’t solve the problem directly. Encourage the child to  report bullying  if it happens.
  • Talk about  how to stand up to kids who bully . Give tips, like using humor and saying “stop” directly and confidently. Talk about what to do if those actions don’t work, like walking away
  • Talk about strategies for staying safe, such as staying near adults or groups of other kids.
  • Urge them to help kids who are bullied  by showing kindness or getting help.

Keep the Lines of Communication Open

Research tells us that children really do look to parents and caregivers for advice and help on tough decisions. Sometimes spending 15 minutes a day talking can reassure kids that they can talk to their parents if they have a problem. Start conversations about daily life and feelings with questions like these:

  • What was one good thing that happened today? Any bad things?
  • What is lunch time like at your school? Who do you sit with? What do you talk about?
  • What is it like to ride the school bus?
  • What are you good at? What would do you like best about yourself?

Talking about bullyin g directly is an important step in understanding how the issue might be affecting kids. There are no right or wrong answers to these questions, but it is important to encourage kids to answer them honestly. Assure kids that they are not alone in addressing any problems that arise. Start conversations about bullying with questions like these:

  • What does “bullying” mean to you?
  • Describe what kids who bully are like. Why do you think people bully?
  • Who are the adults you trust most when it comes to things like bullying?
  • Have you ever felt scared to go to school because you were afraid of bullying? What ways have you tried to change it?
  • What do you think parents can do to help stop bullying?
  • Have you or your friends left other kids out on purpose? Do you think that was bullying? Why or why not?
  • What do you usually do when you see bullying going on?
  • Do you ever see kids at your school being bullied by other kids? How does it make you feel?
  • Have you ever tried to help someone who is being bullied? What happened? What would you do if it happens again?

These activities give kids a chance to have fun and meet others with the same interests. They can build confidence and friendships that help protect kids from bullying.

Model How to Treat Others with Kindness and Respect

Kids learn from adults’ actions. By treating others with kindness and respect, adults show the kids in their lives that there is no place for bullying. Even if it seems like they are not paying attention, kids are watching how adults manage stress and conflict, as well as how they treat their friends, colleagues, and families.

Bullying in schools is growing concern in the United States. Bullying causes many problems, not only for the victim, but also for the bully. Students desire a safe haven at home and school and problems with bullies lead to insecurity in the victim. Bullying should be taken seriously and teachers, administrators and parents should work together to find solutions.

Problems for Victims

Bullying can cause life-long negative psychological effects on a victim of a bully. A victim will often suffer through the abuse because he is ashamed or he doesn't believe that change will happen if he tells. He also may fear retaliation. A victim of a bully can end up fearful of others and may be unable to cope socially. A victim may become withdrawn and his school work may begin to suffer. A victim may turn around and bully someone he determines to be weaker, thus perpetuating the problem.

Problems for Bullies

A bully may also have life-long issues related to bullying. The Center for Problem Oriented Policing gives some examples for why a bully turns to picking on someone weaker such as abusive influence in the home and peer group influence. If the peers of the bully agree that someone is socially different, they may encourage the bully's behavior. According to a study by the Fight Crime Organization, nearly 60 percent of boys who researchers classified as bullies in grades six through nine were convicted of at least one crime by the age of 24. The bully may be experiencing abuse at home or have problems adjusting at school so he lashes out at someone weaker.

School Solutions

Schools can set up programs to educate all students from a young age about the dangers and effects of bullying. Try to stop the problem before it starts by setting up parameters for students when faced with bullying. Offer a safe environment for students to discuss problems they may have with another student. Set a policy related to bullying, such as required counseling for the bully and victim and a scale of disciplinary actions, such as required community service, depending on the severity of the case. Educate all teachers on how to deal with bullying in the classroom effectively through one-on-one interaction with the student, setting up meetings with parents of bullies and victims, or when and how to remove a violent bully from the classroom. Monitor areas where students have less supervision to prevent bullies from easy opportunities to bully. Encourage all students to report incidents of bullying, whether they are victims or witnesses.

Parental Solutions

Parents need to have a clear understanding of what constitutes bullying and the schools bullying policies so that they can recognize the signs and take all incidents of peer abuse seriously. A parent of a bully needs to take steps to work with the child by finding out why the child is bullying and determining if the child needs professional counseling. Parents can also encourage empathy by explaining to the child what empathy is and showing the child by example. Parents can encourage their child to stand up for herself and teach her effective ways of managing anger or feelings of helplessness. Constant communication, through phone calls, notes and meetings between parents and school is necessary to prevent bullying.

Bullying is a shockingly prevalent occurrence in many schools. Oftentimes it is a result of the psychological issues that children face and bullies are more likely to be those kids who receive neither love nor care at home. Encouraging children to share their problems with their parents and teachers and offering them counselling will prevent bullying to a great extent.

Studies have shown that bullies almost always come from dysfunctional homes where they are not taken good care of. Children who are neglected or abused by their parents or caregivers bottle up too many negative emotions inside. At school, when they find another student who appears physically weaker or different, they give vent to that suppressed anger and frustration by bullying them. Intimidating weaker peers is a way for them to hide their insecurities and feel powerful. Sometimes, bullies are past victims of bullying. They cannot get over the humiliation they suffered at the hands of their tormentors and now want to subject their weaker peers to the same humiliation. Bullying can also be a result of economic, social and cultural differences. For example, coloured children could be the victims of bullying in schools where white children are in the majority. Children can also be bullied for their physical appearance, accent or poor financial situation.

Whatever be the reason, bullying is a traumatic experience for the victim. There are students who drop out of school or move to another school just to escape the trauma. It is also possible for many of the victims to suffer from lifelong anxiety and depression. Parents and teachers can improve the situation to a great extent by building better rapport with the children. At home, parents should create an atmosphere where children can share anything with them. At school, teachers should monitor the conduct of each student and intervene when they suspect that something is amiss. Both the victims and the aggressors should receive counselling. Aggressors should be taught how important it is to exhibit human qualities like love, compassion and empathy. At the same time, victims should be convinced that being on the receiving end it is not their fault at all.

In conclusion, bullying is almost always an outward demonstration of the feelings of anger and fear that children experience as a result of being neglected or abused at home. Differences in appearance or financial or social background may also trigger bullying. By building better rapports with children, listening to them and offering them help whenever they need it, parents and teachers can protect children from bullying to a great extent.

Bullying is a big problem in many schools – Band 8 IELTS essay sample

It is true that the problem of bullying is getting worse in many schools. There are some reasons behind it and steps can be taken to tackle this problem.

There are three factors to be blamed for school bullies. Firstly, many parents of those bullies care little about their children and therefore their kids tend to misbehave. It is their way of getting attention because of the lack of family support and caring. Secondly, it is possible that students don’t receive enough education regarding problems caused by bullying, leading to a situation that students are not aware of the seriousness of such misbehavior and the victims fail to seek help from teachers or parents. Thirdly, schools are also responsible for their mild punishments for bullies. Punishments like detention or suspension seem to be ineffective and do not act as a deterrent, especially for those serious offenders.

I believe that this problem can be solved as followed. Changes can start with parents who should be persuaded to spend more quality time with their child because a healthy, kind and caring kid definitely comes from a warm and supportive family. Moreover, teachers should design curriculums about bullying and give lectures to students about it. Such courses play a vital role in eliminating bullying in schools because teachers can raise students’ awareness of these issues and equip them with coping techniques. Last but not least, schools should shoulder the responsibility to come up with harsher punishments to discipline those serious bullies. By doing so, schools can send a message that misconducts come with consequences, which can deter some of the potential offenders from bullying others.

In conclusion, bullies are almost always children coming from families where they do not receive love or support. It can be prevented if parents, teachers and schools work together to offer love, guidance and correction when necessary.

Bullying is quite common among school children. Bullying can be merciless, cruel as well as violent, which can have life-long implications for the victims. Such an unjustifiable attitude may be caused by the fact that the aggressors themselves were subjected to bullying at home. Consequently, they demonstrate the same behaviour in their interactions with others. I believe that instilling in them both love and compassion for other people and boosting the confidence levels of both the aggressor and the victim can prevent bullying to a great extent.

There are various reasons for bullying, and there is no difference between boys and girls. All of them can be both aggressors and victims because of disparities in social, cultural and economic status. According to the surveys, some students bully others because of they are physically abused by their parents. Therefore, they copy their behaviors that they experience at home. Another reason can be linked to their low self-esteem because they were neglected by their guardians and did not receive their love and/or care. Those students feel depressed and lonely, so, they intimidate their peers, in order to hide their insecurities and feel more important).

Furthermore, children who are bullies often lack a sense of empathy and caring while the victims feel ashamed about being the target of a bully. Hence, creating a supportive school climate, making students aware of the importance of human qualities like empathy, compassion and love for the people around them, can change children’s attitudes towards one another. In addition, both bullies and their victims should receive counselling to get over the trauma.  

In conclusion, it is regrettable that bullying is pervasive in many schools. However, organizing therapies and other helpful programs at school can mitigate the problem and prevent future bullying.

N.Y. County Order Targets Transgender Women and Girls in Sports

A new ban in Long Island’s Nassau County prohibits girls’ and women’s teams with transgender athletes from competing at public facilities, the latest effort in a nationwide push to limit participation in women’s sports.

A county on Long Island, N.Y., is making more than 100 facilities off limits to athletic organizations that allow transgender girls and women to compete on teams that match their gender identity, staking out a position in the nationwide debate over how and when transgender athletes can participate in women’s sports.

Bruce Blakeman, the Nassau County executive and a Republican, signed an executive order on Thursday requiring any sports league or organization that wants to use a county parks department facility to “expressly designate” its teams as male, female or coed based on members’ assigned sex at birth.

The policy takes effect immediately and does not require legislative approval. The governor, the New York attorney general and the New York chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union said the ban was illegal and suggested legal action could be imminent.

The move was the latest in a series of efforts by officials across the country to bar transgender athletes from competing on teams that match their gender identity, particularly in girls’ and women’s sports. In the past several years, more than 20 states have passed laws restricting transgender athletes from playing school sports on teams that do not match the sex they were assigned at birth, according to ESPN .

And last year, the U.S. House of Representatives, which is controlled by Republicans, approved a bill that would bar transgender women and girls from competing in women’s sports . The bill has no chance of passing the Senate, which is controlled by Democrats, or of being signed by President Biden.

According to Mr. Blakeman’s office, the executive action signed on Thursday, which does not restrict transgender boys and men from competing on boys’ and men’s teams, will affect thousands of teams across all levels that compete at Nassau County facilities.

Last year, the Big East Conference, home to 11 college athletics programs, held its swimming championship in the county. A spokesperson for the Big East said the championship would be in Indianapolis this year and that no decision had been made about future events.

Robert Zayas, the executive director of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, told his colleagues in an email on Thursday that the association “continues to advise its member schools to place students on teams that most appropriately aligns with the student’s gender identity.” Dr. Zayas added that he was working with state officials to figure out how to address the new ban and to determine what effect it would have on student athletes.

Backlash to the order was swift.

“This discriminatory move not only undermines the principles of inclusivity and fairness but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes and exclusion,” said David Kilmnick, the president of the L.G.B.T. Network, a nonprofit group based on Long Island and in Queens.

“New York State law explicitly protects the rights of transgender individuals, ensuring their equal participation in all aspects of life, including sports,” he added. “Attempting to enforce such a ban would be futile and legally untenable.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul, in a statement to The New York Times on Thursday, accused Mr. Blakeman of “bullying trans kids.”

“There is nothing lower than trying to score cheap political points by putting a target on the backs of some of our state’s most vulnerable children,” she said. “We’re proud New York has some of the nation’s strongest protections for the L.G.B.T.Q.+ community, and my Administration is committed to enforcing these laws.”

Letitia James, the New York attorney general, called the order “transphobic” and “deeply dangerous.” Bobby Hodgson, the director of L.G.B.T.Q. Rights Litigation at the New York chapter of the A.C.L.U., said in a statement that the organization would “consider all options to stop it.”

Jami Taylor, a political science professor at the University of Toledo and an expert on L.G.B.T. politics, said in an interview that in signing the order, Mr. Blakeman had ignored both state law and a precedent set by the state Supreme Court.

According to New York human rights law, gender identity and expression is a protected class in “ all areas of jurisdiction, including employment, places of public accommodation, public and private housing, educational institutions and credit. ” Ms. Taylor said county sports facilities would be considered places of public accommodation.

“What this is, is an attempt broadly by Republicans nationally to focus on the transgender rights issue in an election season,” Ms. Taylor said. “It’s really just a culture war issue that they feel is advantageous.”

The New York Supreme Court ruled in Richards v. United States Tennis Association in 1977 that RenĂ©e Richards, one of the first openly transgender professional athletes, could compete in the women’s draw at the U.S. Open, rejecting the tennis association’s requirement for Ms. Richards to pass a sex chromatin test.

“As early as 1977, it was recognized by a New York court that sex discrimination claims under the Human Rights Law may be brought by individuals alleging discrimination because of their gender identity,” the New York state guidance on gender identity protections reads.

Assemblywoman Gina Sillitti, a Democrat representing parts of Nassau County, said that Mr. Blakeman had signed the order to score political points.

“He is issuing an unnecessary executive order to grab headlines that I fear could lead to a culture of hate towards transgender children,” Ms. Sillitti said. “Words matter. Far too often, hateful rhetoric leads to hateful action.”

The executive order was announced at a time of increasing threats and harassment against transgender and nonbinary people, especially children, with bans on athletic activities and bathroom usage continuing to gain traction.

Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old who used they/them pronouns, died this week in a small Oklahoma town outside Tulsa after a confrontation in their high school’s girls bathroom .

Earlier this month, in Utah, a school district had to enlist police protection for a player on a high school girls’ basketball team whom a member of the state school board had suggested was transgender .

Mr. Blakeman, a longtime fixture in Long Island politics, won the county executive’s office in 2021 with a campaign heavily opposed to mask mandates , requirements that had angered some suburban parents and businesses, as well as a focus on crime and bail reform.

His win, part of a wave of G.O.P. victories in Nassau County that fall , catapulted Mr. Blakeman to hero status in state Republican circles, with defiant appearances on Fox News only burnishing that reputation.

But Nassau County, with a population of about 1.4 million people , is far from a monolithic G.O.P. stronghold, with more registered Democrats than registered Republicans and nearly 300,000 nonaffiliated voters.

That moderate disposition was proved last week with a win by Tom Suozzi , a Democrat, in a special election in the Third Congressional District, the majority of which is in Nassau County.

Mr. Blakeman was joined at a news conference on Thursday by Kim Russell, a former women’s lacrosse coach at Oberlin College in Ohio who was removed from her position after publicly criticizing the inclusion of transgender women in women’s sports .

The speakers stood at a lectern flanked by school-age girls holding signs that read “Protect Women’s Sports.”

“I’m here, first and foremost, to support all of these young girls here,” said Ms. Russell, who does not live in Nassau County. “Without having the ability to have single-sex competition, these young girls could lose opportunities.”

When Mr. Blakeman was asked at the news conference how many transgender athletes competed in Nassau County, he said he did not know. He said that fewer than 1 percent of the county’s residents identified as transgender, without citing a source, and that he was not sure how many, if any, competed at county facilities.

Instead, he referred to transgender girls who competed on women’s teams outside New York in his remarks, saying that he wanted to “get ahead of the curve here in Nassau County.”

As Mr. Blakeman signed the order, a small group of protesters gathered outside the county executive and legislative building where the news conference was taking place, chanting, “Trans kids are our kids.”

Juli Grey-Owens, the executive director of Gender Equality New York, a group that took part in the protest, said that in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, which have a combined population of around 2.9 million, there were about 17,000 transgender people.

The bigger question, Ms. Grey-Owens said, was how many transgender athletes were even involved in local women’s and girls’ sports.

“Every time that question is asked, they come back with no answer,” she said. “Because they have a solution looking for a problem.”
