Space Case  by Stuart Gibbs (SERIES) SCI-FI/MYSTERY review written by 11-year old JJ Thismurder mystery on the moon has it all! It took palace in 2040 after their second-in-command died. He added, “The egg was soft, but now it’s hard. The potato was hard, but now it’s soft. And the tea leaves, they changed the water.”

One scorching summer, the desert dried up, and there was no water left for the plants. The rose quickly began to wither. Its beautiful petals wither, lose their lush color.

One day, a fox became very hungry in search of something to eat. He searched high and low, but could not find anything that he could eat.

Finally, as his stomach rumbled, he hit a farmer’s wall. At the top of the wall, he saw the largest, succulent vineyards he had ever seen. They had a rich, purple color, telling the fox that they were ready to eat.

To reach the grapes, the fox had to jump high in the air. As soon as he jumped, he opened his mouth to catch the grapes, but he missed. The fox tried again but missed again.

He tried a few more times but failed.

In the end, the fox decided it was time to give up and go home. When he left, he muttered, “I bet the grapes were sour anyway.”

Moral – Never despise what we can’t have; nothing comes easy.

The Farmer and the Well

One day, a farmer was looking for a source of water for his field when he bought a well from his neighbor. However, the neighbor was clever. The next day when the farmer came to draw water from his well, the neighbor refused to take water from him.

When the farmer asked why, the neighbor replied, “I sold you the well, no water,” and left. Distraught, the farmer went to the emperor to plead for justice. He explained what had happened.

The emperor met Birbal, one of his nine and most intelligent, courtiers. Birbal asked the neighbor, “Why don’t you let the farmer draw water from the well? You sold the well to the farmer?”

The neighbor replied, “Birbal, I sold the well to the farmer, but there is no water inside it. He has no right to draw water from the well.”

Birbal said, “Look, since you have sold the well, you have no right to keep water in the farmer’s well. Either you pay rent to the farmer, or withdraw immediately. Realizing that his plan had failed, the neighbor apologized and went home.

Moral – Cheating will not get you anything. If you cheat, you’ll pay soon enough.

What the Data Says About Pandemic School Closures, Four Years Later

The more time students spent in remote instruction, the further they fell behind. And, experts say, extended closures did little to stop the spread of Covid.

Sarah Mervosh

By Sarah Mervosh ,  Claire Cain Miller and Francesca Paris

Four years ago this month, schools nationwide began to shut down, igniting one of the most polarizing and partisan debates of the pandemic.

Some schools, often in Republican-led states and rural areas, reopened by fall 2020. Others, typically in large cities and states led by Democrats, would not fully reopen for another year.

A variety of data — about children’s academic outcomes and about the spread of Covid-19 — has accumulated in the time since. Today, there is broad acknowledgment among many public health and education experts that extended school closures did not significantly stop the spread of Covid, while the academic harms for children have been large and long-lasting.

While poverty and other factors also played a role, remote learning was a key driver of academic declines during the pandemic, research shows — a finding that held true across income levels.

Source: Fahle, Kane, Patterson, Reardon, Staiger and Stuart, “ School District and Community Factors Associated With Learning Loss During the COVID-19 Pandemic .” Score changes are measured from 2019 to 2022. In-person means a district offered traditional in-person learning, even if not all students were in-person.

“There’s fairly good consensus that, in general, as a society, we probably kept kids out of school longer than we should have,” said Dr. Sean O’Leary, a pediatric infectious disease specialist who helped write guidance for the American Academy of Pediatrics, which recommended in June 2020 that schools reopen with safety measures in place.

There were no easy decisions at the time. Officials had to weigh the risks of an emerging virus against the academic and mental health consequences of closing schools. And even schools that reopened quickly, by the fall of 2020, have seen lasting effects.

But as experts plan for the next public health emergency, whatever it may be, a growing body of research shows that pandemic school closures came at a steep cost to students.

The longer schools were closed, the more students fell behind.

At the state level, more time spent in remote or hybrid instruction in the 2020-21 school year was associated with larger drops in test scores, according to a New York Times analysis of school closure data and results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress , an authoritative exam administered to a national sample of fourth- and eighth-grade students.

At the school district level, that finding also holds, according to an analysis of test scores from third through eighth grade in thousands of U.S. districts, led by researchers at Stanford and Harvard. In districts where students spent most of the 2020-21 school year learning remotely, they fell more than half a grade behind in math on average, while in districts that spent most of the year in person they lost just over a third of a grade.

( A separate study of nearly 10,000 schools found similar results.)

Such losses can be hard to overcome, without significant interventions. The most recent test scores, from spring 2023, show that students, overall, are not caught up from their pandemic losses , with larger gaps remaining among students that lost the most ground to begin with. Students in districts that were remote or hybrid the longest — at least 90 percent of the 2020-21 school year — still had almost double the ground to make up compared with students in districts that allowed students back for most of the year.

Some time in person was better than no time.

As districts shifted toward in-person learning as the year went on, students that were offered a hybrid schedule (a few hours or days a week in person, with the rest online) did better, on average, than those in places where school was fully remote, but worse than those in places that had school fully in person.

Some schools return online, as Covid-19 cases surge. Vaccinations start for high-priority groups.

Teachers are eligible for the Covid vaccine in more than half of states.

Most districts end the year in-person or hybrid.

Source: Burbio audit of more than 1,200 school districts representing 47 percent of U.S. K-12 enrollment. Note: Learning mode was defined based on the most in-person option available to students.

Income and family background also made a big difference.

A second factor associated with academic declines during the pandemic was a community’s poverty level. Comparing districts with similar remote learning policies, poorer districts had steeper losses.

But in-person learning still mattered: Looking at districts with similar poverty levels, remote learning was associated with greater declines.

A community’s poverty rate and the length of school closures had a “roughly equal” effect on student outcomes, said Sean F. Reardon, a professor of poverty and inequality in education at Stanford, who led a district-level analysis with Thomas J. Kane, an economist at Harvard.

Score changes are measured from 2019 to 2022. Poorest and richest are the top and bottom 20% of districts by percent of students on free/reduced lunch. Mostly in-person and mostly remote are districts that offered traditional in-person learning for more than 90 percent or less than 10 percent of the 2020-21 year.

But the combination — poverty and remote learning — was particularly harmful. For each week spent remote, students in poor districts experienced steeper losses in math than peers in richer districts.

That is notable, because poor districts were also more likely to stay remote for longer .

Some of the country’s largest poor districts are in Democratic-leaning cities that took a more cautious approach to the virus. Poor areas, and Black and Hispanic communities , also suffered higher Covid death rates, making many families and teachers in those districts hesitant to return.

“We wanted to survive,” said Sarah Carpenter, the executive director of Memphis Lift, a parent advocacy group in Memphis, where schools were closed until spring 2021 .

“But I also think, man, looking back, I wish our kids could have gone back to school much quicker,” she added, citing the academic effects.

Other things were also associated with worse student outcomes, including increased anxiety and depression among adults in children’s lives, and the overall restriction of social activity in a community, according to the Stanford and Harvard research .

Even short closures had long-term consequences for children.

While being in school was on average better for academic outcomes, it wasn’t a guarantee. Some districts that opened early, like those in Cherokee County, Ga., a suburb of Atlanta, and Hanover County, Va., lost significant learning and remain behind.

At the same time, many schools are seeing more anxiety and behavioral outbursts among students. And chronic absenteeism from school has surged across demographic groups .

These are signs, experts say, that even short-term closures, and the pandemic more broadly, had lasting effects on the culture of education.

“There was almost, in the Covid era, a sense of, ‘We give up, we’re just trying to keep body and soul together,’ and I think that was corrosive to the higher expectations of schools,” said Margaret Spellings, an education secretary under President George W. Bush who is now chief executive of the Bipartisan Policy Center.

Closing schools did not appear to significantly slow Covid’s spread.

Perhaps the biggest question that hung over school reopenings: Was it safe?

That was largely unknown in the spring of 2020, when schools first shut down. But several experts said that had changed by the fall of 2020, when there were initial signs that children were less likely to become seriously ill, and growing evidence from Europe and parts of the United States that opening schools, with safety measures, did not lead to significantly more transmission.

“Infectious disease leaders have generally agreed that school closures were not an important strategy in stemming the spread of Covid,” said Dr. Jeanne Noble, who directed the Covid response at the U.C.S.F. Parnassus emergency department.

Politically, though, there remains some disagreement about when, exactly, it was safe to reopen school.

Republican governors who pushed to open schools sooner have claimed credit for their approach, while Democrats and teachers’ unions have emphasized their commitment to safety and their investment in helping students recover.

“I do believe it was the right decision,” said Jerry T. Jordan, president of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, which resisted returning to school in person over concerns about the availability of vaccines and poor ventilation in school buildings. Philadelphia schools waited to partially reopen until the spring of 2021 , a decision Mr. Jordan believes saved lives.

“It doesn’t matter what is going on in the building and how much people are learning if people are getting the virus and running the potential of dying,” he said.

Pandemic school closures offer lessons for the future.

Though the next health crisis may have different particulars, with different risk calculations, the consequences of closing schools are now well established, experts say.

In the future, infectious disease experts said, they hoped decisions would be guided more by epidemiological data as it emerged, taking into account the trade-offs.

“Could we have used data to better guide our decision making? Yes,” said Dr. Uzma N. Hasan, division chief of pediatric infectious diseases at RWJBarnabas Health in Livingston, N.J. “Fear should not guide our decision making.”

Source: Fahle, Kane, Patterson, Reardon, Staiger and Stuart, “ School District and Community Factors Associated With Learning Loss During the Covid-19 Pandemic. ”

The study used estimates of learning loss from the Stanford Education Data Archive . For closure lengths, the study averaged district-level estimates of time spent in remote and hybrid learning compiled by the Covid-19 School Data Hub (C.S.D.H.) and American Enterprise Institute (A.E.I.) . The A.E.I. data defines remote status by whether there was an in-person or hybrid option, even if some students chose to remain virtual. In the C.S.D.H. data set, districts are defined as remote if “all or most” students were virtual.

An earlier version of this article misstated a job description of Dr. Jeanne Noble. She directed the Covid response at the U.C.S.F. Parnassus emergency department. She did not direct the Covid response for the University of California, San Francisco health system.

2024 Houston Open: Stephan Jaeger earns first victory, Scottie Scheffler just short of third straight win

A missed putt on the 18th to force a playoff allowed jaeger to enter the winner's circle in houston.

jaeger-2024-houston-open-final-round-g.jpg

One of the winningest players in Korn Ferry Tour history finally claimed his first victory on the PGA Tour. Stephan Jaeger emerged from a crowded leaderboard at the 2024 Houston Open to pick up a one-stroke victory over Scottie Scheffler, Tony Finau, Taylor Moore and others at 12 under.

With his breakthrough win, Jaeger will earn an invitation to the Masters for the first time in his career. He will also receive invitations into the PGA Championship, The Sentry and access the rest of the signature events in 2024 -- all while securing his playing privileges on the PGA Tour through the 2026 season. Jaeger jumps inside the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings as well.

"[Scottie's] been playing some unbelievable golf," Jaeger said. "... He's such a great dude as well. It was such a blast the last couple days to kind of fight with him, and you just know he's going to have some good stuff. I just kind of tried to stay within myself, try to make some putts, try to make some birdies. The birdies kind of eluded me on the back nine, but this golf course plays a little difficult. Especially if you are right around the lead, there's just so much trouble. I'm super happy obviously with today."

One of the five 54-hole leaders entering Sunday, Jaeger found himself in the final group alongside the world No. 1. Four birdies including back-to-back conversions on Nos. 8-9 against just one bogey on his front nine gave Jaeger a slight lead over Scheffler and a litany of others heading into the pivotal back nine at Memorial Park.

While the birdies were flying on the outward half, they were grounded on the back side. Par after par from Jaeger saw players make their moves on him including Alejandro Tosti who got to 12 under with a birdie on the par-5 16th. The 34-year-old kept his cool, however, and kept on with a heavy diet of pars.

Scheffler was unable to break into a share of the lead after dropping two behind with a bogey on the par-3 15th. Needing two putts from 20 feet for birdie on the 16th before failing to convert an 11-foot effort to tie Jaeger and Tosti on the 17th, Scheffler went to the final hole needing a birdie to force a playoff.

With Tosti carding a bogey on the 72nd hole and dropping out the lead, Jaeger and Scheffler stood in the fairway behind with only one stroke separating the two. Scheffler stepped to his first and lasered a mid iron to 6 feet just below the hole, while Jaeger followed with a sound shot to 20 feet.

Jaeger's birdie bid slid by and set the stage for what many assumed to be a playoff in the waiting. However, as he did most of the back nine, Scheffler was unable to convert his birdie chance. Instead of Scheffler winning his third PGA Tour title in a row, it was Jaeger who grabbed his first. Grade: A+

To force a playoff ... A narrow miss by Scottie Scheffler whose bid to win three straight falls one shot short pic.twitter.com/RMgjfQB7u3 — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) March 31, 2024

Here are the grades for the rest of the notables on the leaderboard at the 2024 Houston Open.

T2. Scottie Scheffler (-11): The world No. 1 probably should have won this golf tournament. Scheffler carded a pair of double bogeys, hit three golf balls in the water and struggled with his long game for most of the week. Despite all this, he still had a birdie chance from inside 6 feet on the final hole to force a playoff. It just goes to show how high his floor stands at the moment. Scheffler's putter has been better ever since transitioning to the mallet, but it was volatile this week. He alternated gaining two strokes on the greens and losing two strokes on the greens each round; unfortunately for him, it was enough to see him miss out on his third straight win. Grade: B+

One final push. Just one back, Scottie Scheffler gives himself a birdie look on No. 18 @TCHouOpen . pic.twitter.com/A4KyYkLWgw — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) March 31, 2024

T2. Tony Finau (-11): He entered the weekend in possession of a two-stroke lead and saw it quickly disappear on Saturday. Carding a third-round 72, Finau lost more than three strokes on approach, three more on the greens and went in the wrong direction on Moving Day. The putter has been improved ever since the Mexico Open, but the consistency is still lacking and has caused some up-and-down play that was on full display at Memorial Park.  Grade: A-

T28. Sahith Theegala (-5): There was a lot of good but not great golf from Theegala this week. He neither signed for a single over-par round nor did any better than a 67 across the four days. He continues to make significant improvements off the tee, where he ranked inside the top five, and this allowed for his iron play to shine. Typically a reliable putter, Theegala fell short on the greens losing just about two strokes and getting up-and-down at a measly 50% clip. He should love where his game is at heading into the Masters where he finished T9 in his debut last year. Grade: B-

T31. Wyndham Clark (-4):  Clark began the week disclosing he had tweaked his back in the gym and contemplated withdrawing before receiving some treatment. His ball speed was at normal levels throughout the tournament, but a few too many mistakes in his middle round ultimately made him a non-factor Sunday. The reigning U.S. Open champion raced inside the top half of the field thanks to a final-round 66, and he now sets his sights on Augusta National for his Masters debut.  Grade: C

T73. Will Zalatoris (+4): After losing nearly five strokes with the broom stick on Thursday, Zalatoris battled to make the cut, but the damage was already done. Despite making his way to the weekend to avoid back-to-back early exits, the wiry right hander never got anything going. After strong showings at the Genesis Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Zalatoris has fallen off ever so slightly, especially on the greens. With his ball striking in tow, Zalatoris' prospects for the Masters remain super intriguing given his finishes of second and T6 in two prior appearances. Grade: D

Williston Middle School, The Film Dudes producing new short film

WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) - Cameras are rolling once again in Williston.

This time, students at Williston Middle School Central Campus are looking to solve puzzles and discover “The Lost Trophy,” the title of this year’s short film produced in collaboration with The Film Dudes, a group of filmmakers from Minot.

“I just think it’s really cool to give people and kids the opportunity to be on screen like that,” said Graycie Mock, a seventh-grade actress.

A blend of mystery and comedy, the script is supposed to be the dudes’ best film yet. It was penned by five middle school students.

“It made it more real to see the actors saying the lines and stuff. I’m very excited to see it in theaters,” said Lilian Boyer, 8th grader script writer.

“Actually, seeing people say the lines you wrote is pretty cool,” said Katherine Winkler, 8th grade script writer.

The main cast spent weeks memorizing their scripts, with nearly five days dedicated to filming.

“There’s lots of good moments, funny moments, and we have to be serious sometimes. It’s been pretty fun,” said Dustin Pittsley, 8th grade actor.

This is the seventh collaboration between Williston students and the Film Dudes since 2017. For the first time, it’s at the middle school, allowing for more cast members.

“It’s really exciting because it’s at a new facility with new students. We have really great talent here,” said Tabitha Carlson, Middle School Media Arts teacher.

There are some concerns it could be the last short film as Middle School Principal Steve Guglich, the man leading the partnership, is set to move to an elementary school next year.

“He and I have been working on this program since its inception. It makes me nervous. We’re still working on some of the paperwork and got to figure out who my admins are going to be. It’s going to be hard without Mr. Guglich for sure,” said Carlson.

For now, everyone from the cast to crew is excited to see the final product, set to be released in May. The Media Arts class will hold a red-carpet premiere at the Grand Theater to show off to their friends, family and peers.

DJT had a good first day: Trump's Truth Social media stock price saw rapid rise

Buoyed by legions of avid supporters, Donald Trump made a bubbly debut on the Nasdaq stock exchange Tuesday.

Shares of Trump Media & Technology Group soared like helium from the opening bell and maintained most of those gains until late in the trading day when a selloff brought Trump's namesake social media company closer to earth with a closing market value of nearly $8 billion, on par with ride-hailing company Lyft and online marketplace Etsy.

It was also an epic trading day for Trump , the presumptive GOP presidential nominee and Trump Media's largest shareholder. Shares rose as high as $79.38 before flagging at the end of trade to close at $57.99, close to their low of the day.

His 60% stake in Truth Social’s parent company, which now trades under the ticker DJT, is worth about $4.5 billion on paper. And, if the stock price stays above $17.50 per share for an extended period, tens of millions of additional shares would be issued, most of them to Trump.

High-flying DJT stock hits turbulence: More volatility ahead for Trump's Truth Social

Enthusiasm in the MAGA ranks was undercut by the more sober assessment of stock market observers. They say Trump Media’s valuation is divorced from the business realities it faces.

Its flagship product Truth Social, Trump’s bullhorn of choice, is a minor player in a social media landscape dominated by megacorporations like Facebook owner Meta. Trump Media, on the other hand, has racked up tens of millions of dollars in losses and generated sparse sales. And it has struggled to attract advertisers and users since its launch in 2021.

It owes its success to Trump, who is one of Truth Social's most prolific users and has among the most followers on the platform with nearly 6.8 million. Trump has 34 million followers on Facebook, 24 million on Instagram and more than 87 million on X.

"It's hard to come up with any reasonable metrics that would get you to this valuation," Derek Horstmeyer, a finance professor at George Mason University in Virginia, told USA TODAY.

The one-day pop was typical of so-called meme stocks in recent years, like video-game retailer GameStop.Trump supporters banded together on social media to lift the stock even before it completed the merger with Digital World Acquisition Corp., a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC , that was already listed on the Nasdaq.

The difference here may be that the former president's fans may continue to lift − rather than dump − the stock.

Trading was exceptionally heavy, according to University of Florida finance professor Jay Ritter. The number of shares available to trade – called the public float – is about 28 million. But more than 52 million shares traded Tuesday. In fact, trading was so intense that Nasdaq temporarily halted it following the opening bell. Typically, trading in most stocks is less than 1% a day.

“Clearly a lot of the buyers and holders are people who are buying it for ideological reasons and plan on holding it for a while,” Ritter said.

That’s not so different from the online traders, mom-and-pop investors, small brokers and others who organized on social media platform Reddit to drive up the price of GameStop and face down hedge funds that were betting against the company and shorting the stock.

“In that regard, GameStop investors were doing it for ideological reasons, too,” Ritter said. “But after the stock price went up, they then sold and the stock price collapsed.”

Nobody knows when the Trump Media bubble will burst, he said. Just because you are a Trump supporter doesn’t mean you will hold it forever, Ritter said.

“In the short run, anything can happen,” he said. “But in the long run, I am highly confident there is going to be a huge percentage decline.”

How much is Truth Social worth?

Those Trump Media shares have handed Trump a crucial lifeline in posting bond as he appeals the civil fraud judgment against him.

A New York appeals court gave Trump 10 more days to post his bond and slashed the amount to $175 million. Trump has been struggling under the weight of not just the $454 million civil fraud judgment, but also an $83.3 million defamation trial loss to advice columnist E. Jean Carroll.

Trump's gains are all on paper for the time being. He would need Trump Media’s seven-person board to lift a restriction that prevents Trump and other insiders from selling shares or using them as collateral for a bond for the next six months.

The board, which is stacked with allies including his son, Donald Trump Jr., and three former members of his administration, could also hold a secondary offering that would allow Trump to cash out some of his stake in coming months.

What is Trump’s net worth?

Truth Social going public means a massive boost to Trump’s net worth, at least on paper.

His shares in Trump Media and the reduction in the bond that Trump must post in a New York civil fraud lawsuit increased his net worth by more than $4 billion Monday, catapulting him into the world’s wealthiest 500 people on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index for the first time.

Why is Truth Social’s ticker DJT?

Research shows that familiar names, such as a former president’s initials, can help a company’s stock performance.

One 2006 study by Princeton University psychologists found that stocks with tickers that are easier to pronounce tend to perform better in the first few days of trading. Another study from Pomona College in 2019 verified earlier research that found clever tickers tend to perform better, partly because they are more memorable to investors.

What is Digital World Acquisition?

Digital World is a SPAC, also known as a blank check company . These publicly traded shell companies exist to acquire or merge with private companies and take them public.

Truth Social’s merger with Digital World was first announced in 2021 when the number of companies going public via SPACs surged. The investment vehicles have since faced criticism for being bad deals for retail investors.

Why did Trump launch Truth Social?

Truth Social was founded after Trump was booted from major social media platforms following the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.

Clemson can't get crucial stops vs. Alabama as Tigers' bid for first Final Four falls short

LOS ANGELES — Clemson reached its second-ever Elite Eight with a staunch defense that took away opponents’ perimeter game.

On Saturday night, the Tigers couldn’t get the stops they needed.

Alabama was 16 of 23 from the field in the final 20 minutes — including 10 of 15 on 3-pointers — as the Tigers’ bid for their first Final Four fell short, 89-82 in the West Region final .

“I mean, they hit big shots, man. They really spread us out,” said forward PJ Hall, who scored 14 points before he fouled out with 3:25 remaining. “We couldn’t quite get the misses we needed them to make.”

In its three previous NCAA Tournament games, Clemson held opponents to 65 of 185 from the field (35.1%) and 14 of 75 on 3-pointers (18.6%).

Alabama shot 46.8% from the field (29 of 62). The Tigers won all 17 games when they held opponents under 40%, but went 7-12 when they didn’t.

Clemson played at its pace during the first 12 minutes. It built a 26-13 lead and held Alabama to 1 of 13 on 3-pointers. Then the Crimson Tide’s Jarin Stevenson connected from the corner. Including that shot, Alabama closed the game by going 15 of 23 beyond the arc.

“We knew going into the game that’s what they like to do. And they shoot them fast, especially when they’re making them. When they’re making them and the momentum is going and they’re rolling, they get those 3s up fast and it seems like they’ll never miss,” said Joseph Girard III, who led the Tigers with 19 points.

Tigers coach Brad Brownell said Alabama was quicker in transition in the second half, which thwarted a couple of Clemson runs.

One of those came early in the second half. Girard made a pullup jumper to get the Tigers within 52-49, but the Tide quickly pushed the ball down the court and Stevenson hit another 3.

“We’re big. We’re physical. We’re tough. We’re smart. But we’re not very fast. In the second half it was a problem for us,” Brownell said. “We couldn’t keep them in front of us. When they start making 3s, you start inching out in space. And even them shooting before we could get down and get our zone set a couple times, there’s not many teams that play that way.”

The Tigers finished 24-12 and will lose four starters. Hall and Chase Hunter were part of a group that made the NCAA Tournament twice and got the program to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1980.

“It’s stacked up a quiet resume that has helped build the program up,” Hall said. “We can attribute that to the coaching staff and the culture they’ve built. We came into a situation where it was a doubted culture, even though they had such a great thing building up. And to come in here, validate what they’ve done, validate the work they do, is special. And it’s amazing.”
