Billing Questions

How much does it cost to live on campus.

On campus room and board is approximately $6340 per semester. The Expenses & Financial Aid webpage is a good resource for cost information.

I have financial aid. So, why do I have a balance?

You may have outstanding documents or requirements to complete. Please make sure to check your VT email or Hokie SPA for any requested documents as this can delay your aid. For example, to receive a student loan, you must complete the Master Promissory Note (MPN) and the Entrance Counseling module at  studentaid.gov .

How do I pay the bill after financial aid is applied?

Student account payments can be made via Hokie Wallet. You can visit the Pay Tuition & Fees page on the Bursar’s Office website for more information.

Is there a payment plan option?

Yes, the Bursar's Office offers a payment plan option. There is a $45 application fee per semester to use the plan. You can find more information on Paying in Monthly Installments on the Bursar’s Office website.

Loan Questions

What is the difference between unsubsidized and subsidized direct loans.

The Subsidized loan is only available to undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need. The Federal Government pays the interest while enrolled in school at least half-time, during the grace period, and during periods of authorized deferment.

  • Unsubsidized loans are available to undergraduate and graduate students. Eligibility is not based on financial need and the borrower is responsible for paying all interest. Interest accrues after the loan first disburses.  Both loans have a 6-month grace period after graduation or falling below half-time enrollment before repayment begins

How do I accept my offered student loan?

You can review and accept your student loans via Hokie SPA.  See our webpage View Your Financial Aid Package for more information.

Can Financial Aid cancel my loan if I decide I don’t need it?

Yes, we can. You must submit your request no later than 30 days after the disbursement. If the loan has already paid or you have received a refund, the loan amount will have to be paid back to the Bursar's office immediately.

Where do my parents apply for the Parent Plus loan?

The parent PLUS application is available at  studentloans.gov . The decision is based on past credit history and parents will know if they are approved or denied upon completion of the online application.

How long does it take for a Parent Plus to be processed?

Immediately following completion of the Parent PLUS loan application, you are informed of approval or denial. The next step is to complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN). Your PLUS loan will be processed in about two weeks.

What are the differences between federal and private student loans?

Private student loans are made by private lenders such as banks and credit unions while federal student loans are made by the government. There will also be different terms for loan fees, interest rates, and repayment options so be sure to compare different lenders before deciding. You can find information on the differences between federal and private student loans on the Federal Student Aid website here .

How can I borrow a private student loan?

Please review the information on private student loans on our Private/Alternative Loans webpage.

Scholarship Questions

I have an outside scholarship. do i need to notify you.

Yes. You will need to visit the Bursar's Office website page  Report Outside Scholarships so your scholarship can be reflected on your student bill.

I received a scholarship from VT, but I don’t see it on my bill?

Many scholarships require students to take action before the scholarship can be applied to the student’s account. First, check Scholarship Central to see if you need to complete a Thank You Letter, sign a FERPA release, or acknowledge that you have read information important to your scholarship. Next, if you received a scholarship from our office, check Self-Service to see if you have accepted your scholarship and acknowledged your Terms & Conditions.

Other Questions

If i am living off campus next year, can i get financial aid to pay for my rent.

Yes, financial aid will cover your off campus living expenses. Each year students are awarded based on Cost of Attendance (COA), which includes housing. Since you will be living off campus you will not be billed for on campus housing, but housing figures stay in your COA. You may get aid up to your COA. You will receive a financial aid credit balance refund for any remaining credit on your account after covering VT billable expenses. You use these funds to pay your off campus living expenses.

Where can I get help with questions about residency?

Check the Eligibility for Virginia In-State Tuition Privileges for more information. You can email the Domicile Specialist at [email protected] with questions.

Is financial aid available for study abroad?

Financial aid may be available for study abroad. Please visit our  Study Abroad page  for more in-depth information.

I am thinking of attending the Summer Session. Will I have financial aid?

Financial aid may be available for summer classes. Read more on our  Summer  webpage. Also, a Parent PLUS or alternative loan may fill the gap if you need additional funding.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, known as Virginia Tech, is a public research university with an acceptance rate of 70%. VT's main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia offers 150 undergraduate majors and degree programs. Popular majors include engineering, business, and biology.

Considering applying to Virginia Tech? Here are the admissions statistics you should know, including average SAT/ACT scores and GPAs of admitted students.

Why Virginia Tech?

  • Location: Blacksburg, Virginia
  • Campus Features: Located on a 2,600-acre main campus, Virginia Tech is well known for its gray limestone buildings. The university is home to a corps of cadets, and the large oval Drillfield occupies the center of the campus.
  • Student/Faculty Ratio: 16:1
  • Athletics: The Virginia Tech Hokies compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference .
  • Highlights: Virginia Tech typically ranks among the top 10 public engineering schools in the country. Business and architecture are both strong, and with a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the school also has strengths in the liberal arts and sciences.

Acceptance Rate

During the 2018-19 admissions cycle, Virginia Tech had an acceptance rate of 70%. This means that for every 100 students who applied, 70 students were admitted, making Virginia Tech's admissions process somewhat competitive.

SAT Scores and Requirements

Virginia Tech requires that all applicants submit either SAT or ACT scores. During the 2018-19 admissions cycle, 87% of admitted students submitted SAT scores.

This admissions data tells us that most of Virginia Tech's admitted students fall within the top 35% nationally on the SAT. For the evidence-based reading and writing section, 50% of students admitted to Virginia Tech scored between 590 and 680, while 25% scored below 590 and 25% scored above 680. On the math section, 50% of admitted students scored between 590 and 710, while 25% scored below 590 and 25% scored above 710. Applicants with a composite SAT score of 1390 or higher will have particularly competitive chances at Virginia Tech.

Requirements

Virginia Tech does not require the SAT writing section. Note that VT participates in the scorechoice program, which means that the admissions office will consider your highest score from each individual section across all SAT test dates. At Virginia Tech, SAT Subject test scores are not required.

ACT Scores and Requirements

Virginia Tech requires that all applicants submit either SAT or ACT scores. During the 2018-19 admissions cycle, 31% of admitted students submitted ACT scores.

This admissions data tells us that most of Virginia Tech's admitted students fall within the top 22% nationally on the ACT. The middle 50% of students admitted to Virginia Tech received a composite ACT score between 25 and 31, while 25% scored above 31 and 25% scored below 25.

Virginia Tech does not require the ACT writing section. Unlike many universities, VT superscores ACT results; your highest subscores from multiple ACT sittings will be considered.

In 2019, the middle 50% of Virginia Tech's incoming class had high school GPAs between 3.83 and 4.26. 25% had a GPA above 4.26, and 25% had a GPA below 3.83. These results suggest that most successful applicants to Virginia Tech have primarily A grades.

Self-Reported GPA/SAT/ACT Graph

The admissions data in the graph is self-reported by applicants to Virginia Tech. GPAs are unweighted. Find out how you compare to accepted students, see the real-time graph, and calculate your chances of getting in with a free Cappex account.

Admissions Chances

Virginia Tech, which accepts more than two-thirds of applicants, has a somewhat selective admissions process. If your SAT/ACT scores and GPA fall within the school's average ranges, you have a strong chance of being accepted. Keep in mind that Virginia Tech has a  holistic admissions  process involving other factors beyond your grades and test scores. A  strong application essay  can strengthen your application, as can participation in  meaningful extracurricular activities  and a  rigorous course schedule . The university looks for applicants with a minimum of four years of English, three years math, two years of laboratory science, two years of social studies, and three years of additional academic subjects (foreign language is recommended). Applicants should note that there may be additional admissions requirements for some majors. Note that Virginia Tech does not consider letters of recommendation  in the admissions process.

Your application can be strengthened by thoughtful, well-written responses to the university's four "Ut Prosim Profile" short answer questions. Be sure to use these essays to reveal the strengths that you'll bring to the campus community. Virginia Tech also considers factors such as ethnicity, first-generation status, leadership and service, and legacy status in the application review process.

Virginia Tech Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

DS just got an email that he had a decision in his portal and found out he was accepted! We weren’t expecting decisions until mid-February. Anyone else get accepted to VT?

Yes! Same here! We were both totally shocked. I had thought given the November 15th deadline it would be one of the last ones he would hear from. Very exciting.

We got the email that only a few decisions were coming out but haven’t seen anything since.

What does an acceptance look like in the portal?? We don’t see anything

When you open the portal, screen goes red and it says “Congratulations”… After that you can view acceptance letter.

Well that makes it obvious!!! Wonder how many are in the small pool??

Pasting this in here from the Tech website:

  • Who was included in the first round of offers? Because we want to review each application with care and because of the increasing number of applications Virginia Tech receives each year, our application review process will take some time. However, as they are reviewed, we will have a pool of offers ready to release. Given that, we decided to inform those whose applications we have reviewed with offers as soon as we were able to do so. Please note that all Early Action applicants can expect to receive a decision by late-February and all Regular Decision applicants can expect to receive a decision by mid-March. Our team is working hard to notify you even sooner and we will send another email when we plan to release additional decisions to keep you and your family members informed of what to expect as we move forward.
  • How many offers were released? About 25% of our first-year offers have been released with this round, leaving the majority of intended additional offers to be made in the spring.
  • How many rounds of decisions will be released and when will the next round be released? We do not have a set number of rounds of decisions that we anticipate to release at this time. We will send another email when we plan to release additional decisions to keep you and your family members informed of what to expect as we move forward.
  • When will I receive an offer packet in the mail? Offer packets to those admitted will not be sent by mail until late-February
  • When will I receive financial aid information? Due to changes made to the FAFSA, financial aid packages will not be available until later in the spring as institutions will not have access to data from the FAFSA until late-January at the earliest. For any applicants who are admitted, we will send an email when your financial aid package is available in your Applicant Portal.
  • Why didn’t I receive a decision? Given the attention we want to give your Ut Prosim Profile, it can take a great amount of time to review our volume of applications. We have not finalized all decisions at this time. We had a small pool of offers that were ready to be released so we decided to inform those applicants as soon as we were able to do so. Please note that all Early Action applicants can expect to receive a decision by late-February and all Regular Decision applicants can expect to receive a decision by mid-March.
  • If I didn’t receive a decision, does it mean I will not be offered admission? If you do not receive an offer of admission, it is not a reflection of your status in the applicant pool. There will be many more offers extended to applicants after this week’s round of offers.
  • I was offered admission. What are my next steps? You can find your next steps listed in your Applicant Portal.

According to the website, this is 25% of the total first year offers.

Is 25% of admissions a “small” pool?

No update for us. In state. 3.9 weighted gpa and test optional. Business.

Wow. Exhilarating to those that were accepted unexpectedly (timing wise) and demoralizing to those that were not.

ETA: For those that were not accepted, it actually seems like a deferral by another name. I could see students in that group being pretty disillusioned by that move.

Not sure how to interpret not being in the batch…

VT states “…we had a small pool of offers that were ready to be released so we decided to inform those applicants as soon as we were able to do so”. I think when they eliminated Early Decision they are concerned people will go elsewhere and enrollment will not be of the quality of past classes. I think they made a huge mistake but we will see. I think the offers went out to the group who were definite admits. We shall see. If you did not get an offer yet, try not to be discouraged by the admissions process. VT is a great school but they are not doing a great job with this process.

Are they all out? Right at 5pm?

Accepted! Just saw it in my email while at disneyland lol

I know it is frustrating. I think VT providing offers late February was a huge mistake. I think they panicked that people are accepting offers elsewhere and they really wanted to get offers out to definite admits now before they decided to go elsewhere. I could be completely wrong but other schools have provided offers and received acceptances. When a school offers you early, it makes you feel good and appreciated. I wish you only success in your admissions and decision!

Their email is very clear that this should not be interpreted as bad.

No one got rejected in this round though, so they are admitting the top applicants right now.

GRE Test Scores

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) or GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is not a requirement of the Graduate School, but may be required by the program to which you are applying. ETS provides a  GRE Fee Reduction Program  for individuals with demonstrated financial need and for national programs supporting underrepresented groups. Those who receive a fee voucher also receive free access to some test preparation materials.

International Students

International students make up nearly 40% of our graduate population in Blacksburg and over 30% of the graduate population across all campuses. International students seeking F-1 or J-1 status may apply only to the Blacksburg and Greater Washington DC area campuses and may not enroll in executive master's and virtual programs.  For assistance with immigration questions, contact the  Cranwell International Center  if applying to the Blacksburg Campus,  our our  immigration advisors in the Northern Virginia Graduate Center  if applying to the Greater Washington DC area campus.  Submit financial and immigration documents  after you receive admission into a graduate program.

Holistic Admissions

At Virginia Tech, we approach admission from an inclusive, rather than exclusive, perspective.  Using a holistic admissions process, we look at many aspects of each student, including such things as work experience, community involvement and service, leadership, personal and professional ethics, research and scholarship, and the barriers you have dealt with while pursuing your goals.

Inclusion and Diversity

We are committed to supporting an inclusive, diverse community of students, faculty, and administrators, one in which students can thrive during their education journey, rather than just survive the process.  Through our many programs and resources, we address the importance of nurturing communities across our university filled with a wide range of perspectives.  Visit our Inclusion and Diversity pages to learn more.

Tuition and Funding

Tuition varies by program and campus location, with different rates for Virginia residents and out-of-state students. Visit our tuition and costs page to learn about the cost of graduate education, and our  funding page to explore various funding sources available to support graduate students.  Over 70% of our full-time degree-seeking students receive graduate assistantships that cover most or all of their cost of education.

How to apply to the Master of Architecture, Master of Science in Architecture, and Ph.D. in Architecture and Design Research degree programs

All graduate applications to the School of Architecture must be completed through the Virginia Tech Graduate School.

Admission to Graduate Programs

Students are admitted to the Graduate Architecture Program on a competitive basis. Applicants are reviewed by an admissions group comprised of faculty members from the Architecture program and are evaluated on the basis of their previous background, including academic performance and relevant work experience. It is essential that applicants demonstrate qualities necessary for successful study at the graduate level through their previous academic work, and that they have shown responsibility, judgment, motivation, imagination and receptivity to new ideas.

Although submission of a paper application is possible, applicants are strongly encouraged to use the on-line application to the Virginia Tech Graduate School . It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the completed application and required supporting materials are received by the University Graduate School and the Graduate Architecture Program, including the portfolio (required for M.Arch.2 candidates), no later than February 15th for admission for the following fall semester to the M.Arch., MS.Arch., or Ph.D. ADR programs. (NOTE: The application deadline for the MLA program is also February 15th.) If all materials are not received by the deadline, the application may not be considered for admission.

Every effort will be made to notify applicants by email of the admission decision by the first week of April. However, some applications will be held for further review pending available space.

Applicants who are accepted and cannot attend the Fall Semester, may request that their admission date be deferred; however, this deferral is not automatic and requires the approval of the Graduate Architecture Program Chair and the Dean of the Graduate School.

For information on admission to the Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) program, please visit the following link:   https://design.vt.edu/landscape-architecture/degrees/master-of-landscape-architecture.html

Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center

Applicants to the M.Arch.2, MS.Arch.-Urban Design Concentration, and Ph.D. programs who plan to begin their studies at the  Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center  (National Capital Region – NCR) should so indicate in their application. However, ALL APPLICANTS for graduate study in architecture should send required application materials to the Graduate Architecture Program office in the School of Architecture on the  Virginia Tech Main Campus in Blacksburg, VA .

Admission Prerequisites

Admission to the graduate programs at Virginia Tech is normally contingent upon holding an appropriate undergraduate baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and presentation of evidence of potential to successfully pursue graduate level work in architecture. Completion of the Bachelor’s degree with a high academic standing is expected.

Beyond the University academic requirements described in the application package, applicants to the graduate program in architecture must have the following preparation:

M.Arch.2 – Admission prerequisites: pre-professional degree (4-year), Bachelor of Arts/Design/Science, etc., in Architecture from a school offering an NAAB-accredited professional degree (B.Arch. or M.Arch.) or the equivalent, including courses in Architectural History, Structures, Environmental Systems, and Building Technology.

M.Arch.3 – Admission prerequisites: Bachelor’s Degree, no limitations on a particular discipline and there is no prerequisite coursework required. The following non-mandatory coursework is recommended in preparation for graduate study in the M.Arch.3 program: mathematics through college algebra, trigonometry and analytic geometry, one term of general physics, and a survey course in architectural history. Students with degrees in design disciplines other than architecture would need to apply to this program.

MS.Arch. and Ph.D. – While a degree in architecture or a related field is not absolutely required, applicants must demonstrate relevant background and experience, as well as capabilities for undertaking advanced academic study.

Note: Applicants should make certain to note on the application the specific program option (M.Arch.2 or M.Arch.3) or specific research concentration (for M.S.Arch. or PhD) in which you intend to study. Changes from one program or program option to another are generally not possible without approval of a written request prior to admission. M.S.Arch. and PhD applicants are encouraged to contact members of the faculty whose interests align with their own.

Graduate study in the M.Arch.3 program typically begins in August, during the Fall semester each year. It is normally not possible to begin M.Arch. studies during the Spring semester. Students in the M.Arch.2 program may start in the Spring semester with approval from the Graduate Program chair.

For all graduate programs in architecture, a complete application should be received by Virginia Tech by February 15th (also Feb. 15th for MLA program) for admission for the following fall semester.

In order for an application to be considered, the following items must be submitted:

A completed graduate application (on-line strongly recommended), including payment of a nonrefundable application fee.

Up-to-date official transcripts of undergraduate and graduate records. Copies of your official transcripts should be uploaded into the on-line application. Please do not mail your official transcripts to us until you have received an offer of admission from Virginia Tech. Please note that non-legible scans will not be accepted. Make sure your scanned documents are legible before uploading, as non-legible documents will result in processing delays. Make sure your scanned copy is of your official transcript. A grade point average of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale) for the last 60 semester credit hours, or equivalent, is required. An applicant whose previous academic performance is deemed slightly deficient (grade point average of 2.75 to 2.99) or whose transcripts are not current may be admitted as a “Provisional” student, as described in the University Graduate Catalog.

Three letters of recommendation from teachers, professionals or other people knowledgeable about the applicant’s work. Letters of recommendation that are not submitted on-line should be sent directly to the Graduate Architecture Program office.

A Résumé and a Statement of Intent briefly describing the applicant’s background, personal interests, motivation for the study of architecture, and, if applicable, proposed area of research focus. In lieu of the brief Statement of Intent, PhD applicants must submit a 2,500-word statement of research focus.

The Graduate School requires official test scores from the TOEFL for all International applicants. The minimum TOEFL score for the Graduate Architecture Program is 233 computer based, 577 paper based and 93 for Internet based. We will also accept the IELTS score of 7.0.

International Students

All international applicants should refer to the  Virginia Tech Graduate School website  concerning additional admission requirements.

Candidates for admission to the M.Arch. 2 program must demonstrate their competence in design beyond the academic transcript. A portfolio of studio work in architectural design and related visual studies is required of these applicants. For candidates for admission to the M.Arch.3 and MS.Arch. programs, submittal of a portfolio is not mandatory due to the variety of academic backgrounds of applicants. However, if an applicant has educational or professional experience in architecture, design, construction, or visual arts (drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, etc.), submittal of a portfolio is recommended.

Portfolios should be submitted digitally, in the online application under Section four, “other documents.”

Applicants should present a limited set of work, representative of their best efforts and most expressive of their interests and abilities. Portfolios should be NO MORE than 20 pages (including cover). Your full name should be clearly visible on the cover page. The page size format should be 8½” × 11” (North American standard) or A4 (International standard).

Schedule an Interview

Faculty and students at Virginia Tech are available to talk with prospective applicants, provide tours of the architecture facilities, and answer questions about the graduate architecture program, so that applicants may determine whether study at Virginia Tech is appropriate to their educational goals. It is desirable for prospective applicants to visit the campus and talk with an advisor if at all possible; however, since travel is an obvious financial burden to many applicants, an interview is not required for admission to the graduate program, and lack of an interview will not reduce one’s chances of admission. If you wish to schedule an interview or a visit to the campus, please contact the Graduate Architecture Program via e-mail at [email protected] or via telephone at (540) 231-5683 for an appointment. Applicants are asked to consult the Virginia Tech academic calendar to avoid requesting an interview during the first and last weeks of each semester.

Computer Requirement

All incoming students in the Master of Architecture program are required to have a personal computer. Recommended specifications are identical to those for undergraduate architecture students. Please see the School of Architecture and School of Design computer requirement web page . Graduate students are required to purchase the subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud through Virginia Tech.

A more complete software package, the Graduate Architecture and Design Bundle , is available for graduate students, but is not required.

No student will be denied admission to Virginia Tech based on an inability to purchase a computer.

Financial Assistance

Several forms of financial assistance are available to graduate students, including grants by federal agencies, fellowships, and scholarships awarded by corporations, foundations, and professional organizations, as well as low and moderate-interest, federally-insured loans, including subsidized loan programs. Interested students can obtain detailed and updated information directly from the University Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid and The Graduate School . The Graduate Architecture Program awards a limited number of graduate assistantships each year. Assistantships are service positions and normally involve providing support to faculty for research or teaching; typical duties include providing tutorial assistance in the various workshops, providing teaching assistance in design studios or for required courses, research project assistance, and photographic assistance in project documentation and presentation. Stipends depend on the student’s academic achievement and experience. Students seeking a Master’s degree are usually not awarded an assistantship position for more than two academic years; assistantships are not normally available to first year students in the M.Arch.3 program.
