By Status.net Editorial Team on November 23, 2023 — 14 minutes to read

Crafting a heartfelt thank you message for a teacher or mentor can make all the difference in acknowledging their hard work and the impact they’ve had on your life. Here are some tips to help you create a meaningful note that truly expresses your gratitude.

First, take a moment to think about the specific things that the teacher or mentor has done for you. This could include lessons they’ve taught, new skills they’ve introduced, or the time and effort they’ve dedicated to your success. Use these thoughts to draft a personalized message that highlights these unique aspects. For example:

Dear Mrs. Brown,

Thank you for your continuous support and guidance throughout the school year. Your patience and dedication in teaching me algebra have made a significant difference in my understanding and confidence. I am truly grateful.

Make sure to provide context in your message. Explain how their support has helped you both academically and personally. Providing concrete examples can strengthen your thank you message and make it more memorable. Here’s an example:

Dear Mr. Johnson,

I wanted to express my gratitude for all the invaluable advice and encouragement you’ve given me during our mentorship. Your insights on pursuing a career in engineering have clarified my path forward, and the time you spent reviewing my college applications boosted my chances immeasurably. Thank you for being such a dedicated and inspiring mentor.

A touch of emotion can go a long way in conveying your appreciation. Don’t be afraid to show your feelings and express how their help and guidance have positively influenced your life. Example:

Dear Miss Lee,

You’re not just a wonderful teacher; you’re also a caring and supportive friend. Your wisdom and kindness have helped me through some tough times, and I’m so grateful to have had you in my corner. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.

A well-written, heartfelt note will mean a great deal to your teacher or mentor. It is an excellent way to demonstrate your appreciation and respect, while also reminding them of the powerful impact they have on their students’ lives.

Why write a gratitude note to your teacher, how to write a thank you note to a teacher, sample thank you notes for teachers, teacher appreciation quotes.

Teachers, despite working about 53 hours per week on average, get very little credit for all their hard work. They’re the ones who spent extra time in and out of the classroom to try and make a difference in each student’s life. They lesson plan, craft decorations and projects, and even use their own money to buy supplies for their classroom that otherwise wasn’t allocated to them. It’s thanks to teachers that we learn, develop, and find specific interests and passions.

For all these reasons (and more) it’s important to take the time to let teachers know just how much they’re appreciated. Saying “thank you” may seem minor, but sometimes it can make a big difference. Whether you have a child in elementary school or middle school, or you’re in high school wanting to share your appreciation for a great teacher or role model at school, a thank you note is the best way to share how much you appreciate the special teacher in your life. By writing a heartfelt thank you card to your wonderful teacher you can let them know all their hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. So if you’re ready to start, follow our guidelines for writing thank you notes for teachers below:

When you’re ready to start writing your thank you, make sure to find appropriate personal stationary . Simple cards that say “Thank you” or school themed stationary are perfect for your handwritten note. Or, you can type out a thank you card customized with a favorite photo of you and your fantastic teacher. Once you have your card, start with the steps listed below:

  • Address the teacher by their proper name. Make sure you’re certain whether the teacher prefers to go by “Mr.” “Mrs.” “Miss” or “Ms.” Use this title on both the envelope and inside the card.
  • Start off with a greeting. Some appropriate greeting might include “Dear,” “To,” or just the teacher’s name followed by a comma.
  • Describe what they did that you are thankful for, and how it helped you. Maybe it was simply spending extra time after class to help your child work through a math problem. Or maybe it was something much bigger, like helping you through a difficult time of your life or providing extra support throughout the school year. Whatever it was, tell them why it mattered to you.
  • Don’t forget to say the words “Thank you!” These two simple words can easily be forgotten in the midst of writing a long letter, but it’s important to have them on the page.

All the best,

  • Warm Wishes,
  • Thank you again,

Thank-You Letters to Teachers

Student thanking teacher with note

Sometimes we forget the impact that we have as teachers. Schools are busy places, and teachers are busy people, so it’s not surprising that sometimes we miss out on chances to stop and reflect upon the influence that we wield over the young people in our care. Often, it’s the little conversations, the easily-forgotten asides, the friendly smile or brief compliment that mean the most to young people – and while we might forget them by the time it comes to write the next report or plan the next lesson, those words can remain with a young person for a very long time, shaping their personality and their thoughts.

So, thank you to all the teachers out there. To show you how powerful you are, as individuals and as a profession, here are a collection of ‘Thank-You’ letters written by students thanking the teacher who, in his or her inimitable way, changed their lives for the better.

I hated you when I first met you. I hated the fact that you made me stand up straight. I hated the way you made me wear my uniform right. I hated the way you made me speak correctly. Most of all, I hated the way that you wouldn’t accept my work unless it was the best I could do. And the best always seemed more effort than I was willing to put in.

We had lots of arguments, at the start. I remember being kept in at lunch a lot. And despite my yelling and threats – even tears once or twice – I remember you never lost your temper. You were always patient with me. You always took the time to listen to me, whenever I wanted to be heard.

I look back upon that time as so important in the development of the person that I am today. You taught me discipline. You taught me dignity. Much more than English, which was what you were supposedly teaching me, you taught me that I could achieve more than what I or other people thought that I was capable of. I could be a success, instead of a clown.

For that lesson, I owe you so much.

Thank you. A student (Year 11). ---

To my teacher:

If I had not had you as my teacher in Year 7, my life would be incredibly different. I’m not saying it would be bad – but you opened my eyes to what I could be, what I could do, in a way that I’ve never thought possible. You took a kid from Penrith and made him want to see the world and beyond.

I still remember one lesson where you told us about your hopes for your future when you were our age. I think you were meant to be talking about science, but it changed, and kind of became a life study. You told us about your regrets, and your successes, and for some reason, it all resonated with me, and I started to realize that anything really is possible.

You have changed my whole aspect on my learning, I wouldn't be where I am today without you. Your encouragement and persistence in my junior years has taught me that I am who I am, and to get to the top, it’s all down to me. I am capable, but it will take hard work and lots of dedication.

Thank you, Nick (Graduated). ---

Dear Friend:

An Inspirer. An Empower. An Engager. These three characteristics are just a short sample of the many you demonstrate with all of your students, including me, every single day.

Too often we progress through the ‘ropes of life,’ and do not invest the time to express our gratitude and authentic value for the support you so eagerly share for our growth, as not only students, but also as global citizens of society.

You make me feel authentically supported when you say, “Please let me know how I can be helpful” and genuinely mean it. Also, the excitement you express to co-learn with me rather than teach me, makes me feel like a partner in my learning experience, when it is so easy to feel like ‘a sponge that can only absorb.’ I know you have so much to share, but I love how you also openly articulate how much I have to share as well and how much you learn by engaging with me!

As an educator, your title can ensure a role of heightening my knowledge in academics. However, you see me not as one of the many students you have, but instead you value me for my uniqueness and strengths. You promote an environment where I feel like I am able to not only share my contribution, but also know it is actually considered and appreciated.

Thank you for being genuine. Thank you for seeing me as a partner in learning and sharing. Thank you for being you. Thank you for being one of the few great teachers out there. May you inspire others to achieve the greatness you have.

With gratitude, Clement Coulston (Graduated) ---

Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your time. Thank you for helping me with my homework. Thank you for setting me homework. Thank you for staying behind to help me, even when I know there are lots of other places you’d rather be. Thank you for keeping me company on camp when no one else was there. Thank you for not embarrassing me in front of my friends. Thank you for explaining things until I understand. Thank you for making me do my best. Thank you for being my teacher.

Sarah (Year 8)

Sample Appreciation Notes from Parents to Teacher (Daycare, Kindergarten or Preschool)

Thanks in advance to my child's teacher for undoing all the mistakes I've made this summer. (funny thanks to teacher message.)

Dear Beatrice,

Thank you for helping to make kindergarten such a positive experience for Billy. With all of your patience, creativity, and love, Billy has achieved a lot this year. He has started off on the right foot by having you as his teacher.

Thank you, Beatrice. You have made a great difference for all of our children. Because you care so much about them, you have directed them to trust themselves in all that they do and to become all that they dream.

With sincerest appreciation,

Let’s Hear it for the Coach: Appreciating Your Child’s Coach or Sports Mentor with a Note

Dear Coach Jackson,

We want to express our thanks for making our son, Tim Findley, feel a part of the volleyball team this year. If you recall, Tim transferred into the district in late October just after you had officially ended try-outs. You agreed to make an exception and let him try-out for the team the following week, and fortunately, you selected him for the starting line-up. That exception, in itself, could have created jealousies among other students.

We, as well as Tim, feared that might be the case. But as the season began, you planned some very important team-building, “bonding” experiences for the boys as you traveled to various tournaments to scout the opposition. Those trips especially gave the team members a chance to get to know Tim quickly one on one off the court. Those opportunities made the transition much easier for him in the new school.

And by the way, I might add that his grades have reflected a comfortable adjustment as well.

As you may have guessed, changing schools in the middle of the year is never a good situation for any student, but for an athlete, it can be disastrous. Such was not the case for Tim this year, thanks to you . We do appreciate your constant encouragement, your competent coaching, and your efforts to see that the college scouts take a look at your athletes. What more could parents ask?

Tutor Time: Give a Thank You Note to a Child’s Private Instructor or Tutor

Dear Michael,

Bruce has been taking swim lessons for three years, but it wasn’t until he enrolled in your class that he finally conquered his fear of water. I really appreciate your being so patient with him and working so hard to boost his confidence. The additional instruction you gave him after class really made a difference. Bruce is already looking forward to taking your Level 4 class next summer.

Kindest Regards,

Special Circumstances: A Thank You Note to a Child’s Teacher, From the Parents

Dear Ms. Philly,

We so much appreciate the special attention you have given to Kelly while he has been hospitalized off and on throughout the year. As you know, such extended absences can play havoc with a child’s relationships with other students, and you have been particularly sensitive to making Kelly feel a part of the group when he was able to be in class.

Specifically, I want to thank you for the several occasions when you gave the other children time to make cards and write notes to Kelly. Not only were you teaching your fourth-graders writing skills, you were teaching them to care about other people. That, I’m sure, is a direct reflection of your own personal commitment to your students.

And what a wonderful idea to record their class parties and special days to send home for Kelly. Although he sometimes watched through tears of disappointment that he could not be part of the festivities, those tapes kept him in touch with his friends during a very difficult time.

I’m sure teachers hear complaints from time to time, but I wanted you to know that we in our household and neighbourhood are certainly singing your praises. Thank you so much for your dedication.

  • “Mr Biggs — Thank you for challenging me to think further, work harder and dream bigger. I surprised us both by reading your entire recommended reading list. Without you as my teacher, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve what I have thus far. I don’t think people say thank you to teachers often enough. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you, for the doors you have opened for me, and thank-you for imparting the ability to find and open more doors by myself.”
  • “Well, you managed to do the impossible — make me excited to come to an 8am class! You are a great prof.”

You’re a good teacher because you explain things so well, and you always include everyone in discussions, so no one feels incompetent or self-conscious. Thank you for showing me I have self-confidence, and inspiring me to act like it.”
  • “Dear Teacher, after reading reviews for your class before enrolling, I never would have guessed I would have such a great time in your classroom. • “Dear Ms. Shroot, Guess what? Until now, math has never been my favorite subject; I always found it a bit boring. But your calculus class somehow broke through my self-imposed resistance, and I am compelled to combine my love of literature and my understanding of math by becoming a science writer. I never saw that coming! Thank you!”
  • “Dear Miss Hamilton, This year I struggled with taking class seriously because of the problems I was having at home. You never gave up on me once, and I want to thank you for that. I will always remember your kindness and willingness to go the extra mile just for me.”

Longer Thank-You Note from a Student to Teacher

appreciation essay for teacher

Dear Mr. Thompson,

When I first saw you walk into our classroom, I saw the kind of person I was proud to call my teacher.

Every day you came to school with a smile on your face and a kind word for all of your students. That means a lot.

Your love of learning ignited our own curiosity and made learning much more fun! You taught us all to appreciate clarity of mind through proper writing form and how to pay attention to the bigger picture.

You will never know how much your guidance has helped me, but I wanted you to know that you have made a big difference in my life.

My thanks always,

Give your teacher something practical and thoughtful — a simple lined journal with a funny cover on the front [affiliate amazon link] will bring a smile to your fav teacher’s face. Write a special note on the inside cover, perhaps.

If you have a few teachers on your list, a more frugal option is to buy a stack of blank thank-you notes [affiliate amazon link] and write each teacher a personalized message. Also appreciated.

Make the thankless work of teaching a little less thankless.

Why Send A Thank-You Note to Your Teacher?

A hand-written thank-you note to your teacher at the end of the term is the best time for parents and children to extend their appreciation for what invaluable service the teacher has provided over the school year.

Teachers and teaching assistants spend a substantial amount of time with their class and have a profound influence on students, not only imparting curriculum knowledge, but teaching civility and morality as well.

Do Teachers Actually Like Notes from Students?

That’s an Affirmative, folks. Despite Teacher wish-lists reflecting ever-shrinking district budgets and resources, asking for all kinds of classroom supplies and things for extra-curricular activities, your teacher wants to be appreciated, and to hear about it. From you.

So yes, still, in this century even, teachers continue to extol the virtues of a good old-fashioned thank-you note . [ source : How to Thank a Teacher., George Lucas Educational Foundation ]

So give your teacher what they want. Or, if a teacher has gone the extra mile for you and others, nominate them for an award .

Don’t Stress, Keep it Simple and Write From the Heart

When writing a thank-you note to a teacher, don’t stress — keep the note short and sweet, but express your gratitude with sincerity. A heartfelt note means a lot to a teacher, and validates their efforts in class to effect positive change or to beneficially influence the lives of their students.

It’s so easy to get stuck trying to compose the perfect thank-you note for your teacher, but it’s more important to simply get something written down. Yes, words are necessary and important, but your gratitude shines through in the act of handing the note over, too. A poll asking teachers what gifts they appreciate most reveals that many teachers continue to extol the virtues of a good old-fashioned thank-you note.

Many days, that’s all we need — to connect .

You’ll find great pleasure in being the one to reach out and thank someone first, and know that years later, your teacher will find your note in an old dusty box of keepsakes, and know that it was all worth it.

Gratitude for Educators: Teacher Appreciation Ideas that Mean the Most

Teacher appreciation quote

Any time of year is a good time to be thinking about teacher appreciation. But before we begin, take a moment to think of a teacher who’s made a difference in your life. One who went above and beyond. One who truly cared at a time when you needed it. One who believed. One who helped you learn something important about yourself. One who made you laugh. One who inspired you to new heights in your academic journey…

Did you think of someone? Bet you did. Good teachers have the kind of positive and enduring impact that we carry with us always. And for parents, it’s heartwarming to see that kind of connection happening between our kids and their teachers, too.

So, what’s the best way to express our gratitude for those caring and hardworking teachers? We’ve quizzed teachers from preschool to college about the expressions of gratitude and appreciation that have meant the most to them over the years. Turns out, it’s often the littlest things that stand out in the biggest ways.

This post is part of our Caring and Creating during Tough Times series.

Written notes, cards, and letters really do mean a lot to teachers.

One after another, teachers mention written notes, cards, and letters as the type of appreciation they especially like to receive.

“I really enjoy receiving letters or emails from students and families. The fact that they have taken the time to write me a note of appreciation really makes me feel special.” —Jenni L., middle school

“The forms of appreciation I enjoy most are the written notes from students and parents. Knowing that I am making a difference is encouraging.” —Tim B., middle school

“I enjoy cards, letters, pictures, the ones that are personal and show the child knows who I am.” —Terrie M., 4th grade

If you’re not sure what to write in a thank-you note to a teacher, here are some teacher appreciation message ideas and message-starters to get your pen rolling.

The more specific the message of gratitude, the more it means to a teacher.

The appreciation notes teachers cherish and remember most are the ones thanking them for something specific they said or did.

“One note that particularly stood out is a page-long letter from my yearbook editor articulating her many thanks for everything from my inspiring her interest in journalism to allowing my classroom as a safe place to speak honestly and candidly about basically anything. Talk about tears!” —Taylor A., high school

“The thank-you notes I enjoy most are the ones that go beyond ‘thanks for all you do’ to say something specific like, ‘We really appreciate the extra time and attention you’ve given before school and during planning time to help Jack with math.’” —Jason C., 4th grade

“The notes that stand out to me are the ones that let me know that something small was really so much more.” —Terrie M., 4th grade

Also remember educators beyond just classroom teachers when expressing gratitude. Counselors, paras, tutors, therapists, aides, “specials” teachers, administrators, and others enjoy hearing how much they matter, too.

Teachers often keep the thank-you messages they receive.

The nice thing about a written message of appreciation is that it can encourage a teacher in that moment when they receive it…and for years to come.

“There is a special box in my classroom that holds a few, not a bunch, of very special notes written by parents. These are notes of appreciation but more importantly, they contain words of specific ways they have seen growth in their child. When the parent attributes these areas of growth to something I have had a part in, I am humbled and moved.” —Sally D., kindergarten

“I keep all handwritten notes from families in a teacher tub at home. Words of appreciation are something I never forget. It’s particularly meaningful when families get to know you as a person as well as a teacher.” —Alison B., 1st grade

“I keep a folder of the most meaningful notes I’ve received from students and parents over the past 43 years of teaching. Not everything comes up roses and I go back to those notes when times are rough and remind myself why I teach. I love that I am still connected to so many of them and their parents through Facebook, or Christmas cards, or chance meetings, or email. Teachers are blessed by their students and parents.” —Maureen D., high school

Written thank-you messages affirm teachers and remind them why they do what they do.

Just as a certain teacher sometimes finds their way into a student’s life at the right moment, a heartfelt message of gratitude can reach a teacher at the exact moment when they need to hear it.

“Teaching is one of those jobs that you never feel ‘good enough’ at what you are doing. There is always something more that you could be doing. Whenever you receive a form of appreciation—any form—it makes you realize that you ARE doing enough and you are making a difference.” —Erica R., 5th grade

“I immensely enjoy receiving handwritten notes from students, even if it’s a short ‘You Rock’ or ‘I <3 You Ms. A’ on a piece of paper or on my whiteboard. Knowing your students took a minute out of their day to write something to their teacher is inspiring.” —Taylor A., high school

“I keep all the notes I’ve received from kids and parents. When I’m stressed about whether I’m doing my job well or if I’m feeling down/overwhelmed, I can go back and read those again.” —Shannon D., preschool

Messages of gratitude from students can be especially meaningful for teachers.

Appreciation from parents is great, but expressions of gratitude from students really go straight to a teacher’s heart.

“There is one letter that will always stand out, and it was from a student that I had in my first year teaching. I taught this student in 2nd grade and now they were in 5th grade. They had been given an assignment in class to write a letter to a teacher who impacted them. It meant so much to me that after 3 years this student still thought about me and how I impacted their educational journey!” —Erica R., 5th grade

“My first year teaching middle school choir was definitely a stressful year. I followed after a teacher who was very loved, and I felt like it was hard to make connections with some of the students. At the end of the year, an 8th grade student wrote me a handwritten letter telling me how much she had enjoyed class and how much she appreciated all she had learned. It made all the first-year jitters so worth it, and I knew I was on the right path.” —Jenni L., middle school

“I like it when my students write random hilarious things in notes because they are so young. My favorite note says, ‘I like you more than Christmas.’” —Jackie L., elementary school

It’s never too late to thank an educator.

It’s great to appreciate teachers in the moment, but sometimes we need the benefit of time and hindsight to recognize the difference they’ve made. Teachers love hearing from former students, even years down the road.

“My most memorable note of appreciation was from a former student who sent me a Facebook message about five years after he was in my class. What impressed me was that he pointed out very specific things about his work as a student (that he did poorly on), and how as a more experienced professional he then understood why I cared. This made me tear up because it was a sign I was doing the right thing.” —Rebecca T., college

“I recently received a message from a former student asking me the name of a book we read when she was in second grade. As we talked, it meant so much to me to know how much she loved it! (Bonding happens during read aloud time.)” —Carolyn G., Head of School

“I received a note of appreciation from a parent of a child that I had had early in my teaching career. It was 20-25 years after I had her son in class. The fact that his mom was still thinking about me and my influence was certainly surprising. Her letter described many things that she felt had helped influence his future. I still have it. I usually tried to read that letter every year to always remind me of how I touch others.” —Debbie B., 1st grade

Teachers also appreciate gifts of gratitude—especially when it’s something that shows you know them.

Teachers particularly enjoy gifts that are thoughtfully timed, based on what’s going on in their life at the moment, or specifically chosen, based on what they like best.

“The thought behind the gift makes it really special—for instance, a gift card to a favorite restaurant right after conferences so I wouldn’t have to cook.” —Bonnie S., 2nd grade

“I received a journal a couple of years ago from a parent who noticed I used a journal every week in church to write down prayer requests. The fact that the parent noticed something about me, rather than just the fact that I was a teacher made it a special gift.” —LuAnn L., 1st grade

Gifts are also meaningful for teachers when they involve some kind of shared experience or personal touch.

These include team gifts from the class, handmade gifts, or gifts that capture a student at a particular point in time.

“I collect rubber ducks, and I had a student make me a duck painting that said, ‘I’m one lucky duck to have a teacher like you.’ It stood out to me because she had made it herself, and I knew she made it with love.” —Katelyn P., 4th grade

“A bookshelf from my first class really stands out. It was my end-of-the-year gift and it has each student’s handprint and name on it. I’m still using it today.” —Alison B., 1st grade

Teachers understand that parents are busy and stressed.

They definitely don’t expect formal expressions of gratitude, especially during challenging times. But they still enjoy quick texts, notes, or emails to check in or say thanks.

“I’ve mostly received quick emails or texts lately. But I know parents are feeling equally stressed and out of sorts, as we are as co-educators more than ever now, so I don’t feel unappreciated.” —Jason C., 4th grade

“In recent weeks, I have received one letter in the mail from a student and some handwritten cards delivered in learning packets back to the school. It has helped me as a teacher, and parents seem to understand in a new and better way that we are a team in working with their kids. I think we are both learning a new level of respect for each other.” —LuAnn L., 1st grade

“Something that did have a huge impact on me was during a FaceTime call with a student. The parent stepped in at the end of the call and I could tell she was completely overwhelmed and so stressed out. I asked her if I could pray for her right then. Afterwards, with tears in her eyes, she told me ‘thank you.’ I was humbled and moved. I was grateful for being able to do what I do.” —Sally D., kindergarten

In conclusion

Educators do what they do because they’re passionate about it, and they consider the experience of seeing students learn and grow a reward in itself. Still, they do enjoy a little heartfelt appreciation whenever it comes their way. Hopefully, it’s inspiring to you to see how much even a small gesture of gratitude can mean to a teacher. So, thank one whenever you get a chance. They’ll feel great. And you’ll be glad you did!

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, 8 essays from educators who raised their voices this year

Teachers are often on the front lines of national conversations, kickstarting discussions that their students or communities need to have.

They also add their own voices to debates that would be less meaningful without them.

This year, as we mark Teacher Appreciation Week, we’re sharing some of the educator perspectives that we’ve published in our First Person section over the last year. Many thanks to the teachers who raised their voices in these essays. Want to help us elevate the voices of even more educators? Make a donation in support of our nonprofit journalism and you’ll have the option to honor an important educator in your life.

A Queens teacher on Charlottesville: ‘It can’t just be teachers of color’ offering lessons on race

After racial violence erupted in Virginia last year, New York City teacher Vivett Dukes called on teachers to engage students in honest conversations about racism.

“We do our children and ourselves a disservice when we don’t have these difficult conversations as a part of our collective curriculums. However, many teachers from various walks of life are neither well-versed nor fully comfortable discussing race on any level with their students. Not talking about racism won’t make it go away.”

Why the phrase ‘with fidelity’ is an affront to good teaching

Too often teachers are blamed for bad curriculum, writes Tom Rademacher, Minnesota’s Teacher of the Year in 2014. And that needs to stop.

“It keeps happening because admitting that schools are messy and students are human, and teaching is both creative and artistic, would also mean you have to trust teachers and let them have some power.”

I’m a Bronx teacher, and I see up close what we all lose when undocumented students live with uncertainty

Two of Ilona Nanay’s best students started high school as English learners and were diagnosed with learning disabilities. But their educational careers came to an end after graduation because both were undocumented and couldn’t afford out-of-state tuition.

“By not passing the DREAM Act, it feels like lawmakers have decided that some of the young people that graduate from my school do not deserve the opportunity to achieve their dreams.”

I’m a Florida teacher in the era of school shootings. This is the terrifying reality of my classroom during a lockdown drill.

K.T. Katzmann is a teacher in Broward County, Florida. In this essay she shares what it’s like knowing that you could be the only thing between a mass shooter and a group of students.

“The experience of being isolated, uninformed, and responsible for the lives of dozens of children is now universal to our profession, whether because of actual emergencies or planned drills.”

I’m a Houston geography teacher. This is my plan for our first day back — as soon as it arrives.

Alex McNaughton teaches a human geography course in Houston. After Hurricane Harvey, he decided to move up a lesson about how urbanization can exacerbate flooding.

“Teachers have a unique power — the power to shape the minds of future generations to solve the problems that we face. Houston’s location means that it will always be susceptible to flooding. But by teaching about the flood I hope I can play a small role in helping our city avoid repeating some of the tragic scenes I witnessed this week.”

How one Harlem teacher gave his student — the ‘Chris Rock of third grade’ — a chance to shine

Ruben Brosbe, a New York City teacher, has a soft spot for troublemakers. In this story, he shares how he got one of his favorite pranksters, Chris, to go through a day without interrupting class.

“Dealing with him taught me a valuable lesson, a lesson I’ve had to learn again and again: At the end of the day, everything that we want to accomplish as teachers is built on our relationships. It’s built on me saying to you, ‘I see you,’ ‘I care about you,’ ‘I care about what you care about and I’m going to make that a part of our class.’”

Cut from the same cloth: Why it matters that black male teachers like me aren’t alone in our schools

Being a black educator can be isolating, writes William Anderson, a Denver teacher. He argues that a more supportive environment for black educators could help cities like Denver improve the lives of black students.

“Without colleagues of the same gender and cultural and ethnic background, having supportive and fulfilling professional relationships is much harder.”

I went viral for walking my students home from school in Memphis. Here’s what got lost in the shuffle.

For years, Memphis teacher Carl Schneider walked his students home to a nearby apartment complex. Then a photograph of him performing this daily ritual caught the attention of the national media. In this essay, Schneider reminds readers that he shouldn’t be the focus — the challenges his students face should. His call to action:

“Educate yourself about the ways systemic racism creates vastly different Americas.”

THE IMPACT OF A TEACHER ON A STUDENT'S LIFE

Teachers consistently put in a lot of hard work with little acknowledgment of their commitment. They go beyond what is needed to create lesson plans and even pay out-of-pocket costs to provide all the necessary supplies; these educators are an irreplaceable source of knowledge that helps students explore their passions and grow.

Some instructors have specific teaching approaches that cater best to individual student needs, significantly impacting them. Hence why, expressing gratitude, no matter how big or small, should be demonstrated towards teachers and parents alike and friends who share similar values by sending letters/notes highlighting teacher appreciation week.

APPRECIATING YOUR AMAZING TEACHER

How do you thank teachers this Teacher Appreciation Week for facing all the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic?

Five former State Teachers of the Year raised that topic last week in an Education Week opinion essay that drew a flood of responses. In online comments, on Twitter, and Facebook, teachers shared on-the-ground advice on how best to appreciate the teachers who helped students navigate remote learning and other forms of improvised instruction during a pandemic this school year.

“Teachers have spent the year proving they can adapt and even excel under terrible conditions,” said Nancy Flanagan, who spent 30 years in a K-12 music classroom in Hartland, Michigan, commenting on the Education Week website. “Honor that.”

Make it personal

The most meaningful gift to teachers would be a personal note recognizing their efforts, Denver elementary school teacher Lori Laliberte commented on Facebook.

English-as-a-second-language teacher Judi Moy said she keeps the notes she receives in a special photo album, which she still cherishes many years later.

Like Moy, Florida teacher Susie Smith Philpot said she still loves getting heartfelt notes after 37 years of teaching.

Similarly, New Jersey educator Suzanne Woolslayer said she would love a letter to be sent to her principal about her achievements as a teacher.

Let teachers in on decision-making

Texas teacher Jessica Jones said she wanted more leeway from the administration to be able to teach.

“Just let me do my job without a million silly little tick-box chores, and then social shaming for not having done them,” she said.

New York teacher Kelly Lambert echoed Jones’s remarks asking for administrators to “leave us alone in peace to do our work for the rest of the year.”

Several teachers, like English teacher Sherri Friedrich, highlighted the need for teachers to have a seat at the table when decisions are being made for the school year.

Jessica Hall said teachers should have a “mega horn” when it comes to making decisions.

“It’s long overdue that those saying what education should be are those actually in education in the classrooms,” Hall said.

New Jersey educator Barbara Smith agreed, saying “people who have never done this job need to keep their opinions, if uninformed, to themselves.”

Many said they wanted improvements to teaching conditions at higher levels, like higher pay, smaller class sizes and cancelling standardized testing.

One Maryland early-childhood teacher tweeted that being paid enough would show that teachers are “treated like the highly educated and experienced professionals we are.”

An 8th grade reading teacher in Connecticut, Doris Murphy, tweeted that standardized tests “take weeks, produce useless, unreliable data during a pandemic, and only add stress and anxiety to an already stressed and anxious population.”

“Pay attention to actions not words,” commented Julie Beans on Facebook. “The same politicians and people calling us heroes raise our health insurance premiums, stagnate pay and eliminate our pensions, weasel around class-size amendments, and penalize us for test scores while holding students blameless.”

Give them a much-needed break

“It is the hardest year for any teacher, veterans or newbies,” said St. Louis English teacher Tricia Frank. “Give me a break.”

Some, like educators Judith Turgeon and Michaela Bell, suggested giving teachers like them a spa day to unwind.

While some teachers joked that they wanted “lots and lots of chocolate” or their “sanity back,” many, like Idaho teacher Tracie Thompson Detrick and Las Vegas teacher Kelly Tyndal, said a simple “thank you” would suffice.

Respect and encouragement for a job well-done are enough to appreciate teachers, educator Linda Plakke commented on Facebook.

“I don’t want gifts…I don’t want stuff…but kindness in general would go a long way,” said Massachusetts teacher Kathryn Dufour on Facebook.

Teacher Terri Jo Harding said all she wants is to know someone thinks she is doing a good job.

Most importantly, Nevada teacher Megan Campbell tweeted, appreciate teachers every day, not just during Teacher Appreciation Week.

Thank You Teacher (Essay Sample)

Thank you teacher.

My life has been an experience of going through valleys and mountains. I have seen good times, along with bad ones too. I have died thousands of times from discouragement yet I am still alive. No amount of pages can fill what I need to write to narrate my experiences. In my journey of life, various groups have contributed directly and otherwise, to the course of my life. One of the most important, influential individuals in my life to this point is my teacher.

When I began school, I knew little, if anything. Kindergarten and elementary school to me proved to be the eye opener. As I proceeded to higher levels of education, beside me all along was my teacher and my parent, of course. There are times when my parent was away from my side, particularly when I was in school. At such times, I relied on no other individual but my teacher whose steadfast presence enabled me to face life at school confidently. The teacher took charge when instances of bullying arose. He became an authority in my life. In this regard, the teacher played the role of a protector and to some extent a parent as he saw me through a lot of difficult times. A young boy lacks the ability to defend himself from much older, violent youths. It is at such times that I recognized the role of a teacher in my school life. I can only say thank you teacher!

One of the key roles that my teacher played in my life was the enhancement of my social life. Apart from teaching me on academic matters, my teacher encouraged me to speak out in class and outside of class thus he enhanced my social skills. Presently, I interact well with family members, my colleagues as well as other members of the society largely due to my teachers’ and parents’ determination to see me prosper in all aspects of life. One of the common problems pointed out by employers in the current world is the un-employability of some fresh graduates due to professional inadequacies, one of which is as a result of poor social skills. For me, that is not a problem because my teacher worked hand in hand with my parents to see that I got the best in as far as professional growth was concerned.

Teachers make an indescribable role in terms of the sacrifice that they make. I spend as much time with my teachers as my parents and family members. The teacher spent much time at school, caring for my academic, psychological, spiritual as well as social wellbeing. In the process, he made much sacrifice. He spent the time he could be with his family with me in school. I cannot determine the exact amount of remuneration he received in exchange for his sacrifice but I do understand that few individuals can make the extent of sacrifice my teacher made. Furthermore, the teacher provided invaluable advice on what was best and worst in as far as the betterment of my life was concerned. Such advice entailed rewards and punishment both of which were delivered effectively, thus collectively made me a better person. Thank you teacher!

In conclusion, my teacher is a special person in my life. The time plus commitment that teachers made, in collaboration with my parents have molded me into a better individual. I have grown from an academic, social, spiritual and psychological viewpoint, and this has not just brought out a competent but also socially viable, useful member of the society. A teacher is a parent to me too, and just as I would say to my parent, I say to every teacher who has impacted my life: THANK YOU TEACHER!

What is Presidents Day and how is it celebrated? What to know about the federal holiday

Many will have a day off on monday in honor of presidents day. consumers may take advantage of retail sales that proliferate on the federal holiday, but here's what to know about the history of it..

appreciation essay for teacher

Presidents Day is fast approaching, which may signal to many a relaxing three-day weekend and plenty of holiday sales and bargains .

But next to Independence Day, there may not exist another American holiday that is quite so patriotic.

While Presidents Day has come to be a commemoration of all the nation's 46 chief executives, both past and present, it wasn't always so broad . When it first came into existence – long before it was even federally recognized – the holiday was meant to celebrate just one man: George Washington.

How has the day grown from a simple celebration of the birthday of the first president of the United States? And why are we seeing all these ads for car and furniture sales on TV?

Here's what to know about Presidents Day and how it came to be:

When is Presidents Day 2024?

This year, Presidents Day is on Monday, Feb. 19.

The holiday is celebrated on the third Monday of every February because of a bill signed into law in 1968 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Taking effect three years later, the Uniform Holiday Bill mandated that three holidays – Memorial Day, Presidents Day and Veterans Day – occur on Mondays to prevent midweek shutdowns and add long weekends to the federal calendar, according to Britannica .

Other holidays, including Labor Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day , were also established to be celebrated on Mondays when they were first observed.

However, Veterans Day was returned to Nov. 11 in 1978 and continues to be commemorated on that day.

What does Presidents Day commemorate?

Presidents Day was initially established in 1879 to celebrate the birthday of the nation's first president, George Washington. In fact, the holiday was simply called Washington's Birthday, which is still how the federal government refers to it, the Department of State explains .

Following the death of the venerated American Revolution leader in 1799, Feb. 22, widely believed to be Washington's date of birth , became a perennial day of remembrance, according to History.com .

The day remained an unofficial observance for much of the 1800s until Sen. Stephen Wallace Dorsey of Arkansas proposed that it become a federal holiday. In 1879, President Rutherford B. Hayes signed it into law, according to History.com.

While initially being recognized only in Washington D.C., Washington's Birthday became a nationwide holiday in 1885. The first to celebrate the life of an individual American, Washington's Birthday was at the time one of only five federally-recognized holidays – the others being Christmas, New Year's, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July.

However, most Americans today likely don't view the federal holiday as a commemoration of just one specific president. Presidents Day has since come to represent a day to recognize and celebrate all of the United States' commanders-in-chief, according to the U.S. Department of State .

When the Uniform Holiday Bill took effect in 1971, a provision was included to combine the celebration of Washington’s birthday with Abraham Lincoln's on Feb. 12, according to History.com. Because the new annual date always fell between Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays, Americans believed the day was intended to honor both presidents.

Interestingly, advertisers may have played a part in the shift to "Presidents Day."

Many businesses jumped at the opportunity to use the three-day weekend as a means to draw customers with Presidents Day sales and bargain at stores across the country, according to History.com.

How is the holiday celebrated?

Because Presidents Day is a federal holiday , most federal workers will have the day off .

Part of the reason Johnson made the day a uniform holiday was so Americans had a long weekend "to travel farther and see more of this beautiful land of ours," he wrote. As such, places like the Washington Monument in D.C. and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota – which bears the likenesses of Presidents Washington, Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt – are bound to attract plenty of tourists.

Similar to Independence Day, the holiday is also viewed as a patriotic celebration . As opposed to July, February might not be the best time for backyard barbecues and fireworks, but reenactments, parades and other ceremonies are sure to take place in cities across the U.S.

Presidential places abound across the U.S.

Opinions on current and recent presidents may leave Americans divided, but we apparently love our leaders of old enough to name a lot of places after them.

In 2023, the U.S. Census Bureau pulled information from its databases showcasing presidential geographic facts about the nation's cities and states.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the census data shows that as of 2020 , the U.S. is home to plenty of cities, counties and towns bearing presidential names. Specifically:

  • 94 places are named "Washington."
  • 72 places are named "Lincoln."
  • 67 places are named for Andrew Jackson, a controversial figure who owned slaves and forced thousands of Native Americans to march along the infamous Trail of Tears.
