250 Words Essay on Halloween Festival

Origins of halloween.

The Halloween festival, celebrated on October 31st, traces its roots back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, symbolizing the end of harvest season and the onset of winter. This day was believed to blur the boundaries between the living and the dead, allowing spirits to roam the earth.

Evolution of Traditions

As Christianity spread, Samhain was morphed into All Hallows’ Eve, the night before All Saints’ Day. The transformation included the adoption of new customs such as soul-caking, where the poor would receive food in return for prayers for the dead. Over time, this practice evolved into trick-or-treating, a popular Halloween tradition today.

Halloween in Contemporary Society

Modern Halloween celebrations are a blend of these ancient rituals and commercial influences. Costumes, once worn to ward off evil spirits, now serve as a medium for self-expression and entertainment. Jack-o’-lanterns, originally carved from turnips in Ireland, are a popular symbol, with pumpkins now commonly used in North America.

Cultural Significance

Halloween provides a unique cultural lens, reflecting societal changes and influences over centuries. It serves as a testament to the power of tradition and the enduring human fascination with the supernatural. Moreover, it underscores the importance of community and shared experiences, as seen in communal activities such as trick-or-treating and costume parties.

In conclusion, Halloween is more than just a night of costumes and candy. It’s a historical and cultural phenomenon that continues to evolve, offering insights into our past and present, and perhaps, our future.

500 Words Essay on Halloween Festival

Introduction to halloween.

Halloween, also known as All Hallows’ Eve, is a festival celebrated annually on the 31st of October. Its roots are traced back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the onset of winter. The Celts believed that on this night, the boundary between the living and the dead was blurred, allowing spirits to roam the earth. Today, Halloween has evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o’-lanterns, festive gatherings, and wearing costumes.

Cultural Significance and Evolution

The cultural significance of Halloween is manifold. In its earliest form, it was a pagan practice intended to ward off harmful spirits. With the spread of Christianity, it was integrated into Christian traditions as a day to honor saints (All Saints’ Day). Over time, Halloween has shifted from a solemn religious ritual to a more community-centric celebration.

The evolution of Halloween is also a testament to cultural exchange and adaptation. Immigrants, particularly those from Ireland and Scotland, brought Halloween to North America in the 19th century. It gradually gained popularity and morphed into a community-centered holiday, characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating. By the 20th century, Halloween had become commercialized and secular, with traditions like costume parties and themed decorations becoming commonplace.

Symbolism and Iconography

Halloween’s iconography is rich and varied, drawing from its historical roots and contemporary practices. The jack-o’-lantern, a carved pumpkin with a lit candle inside, is one of the most recognizable symbols of Halloween. It originates from an Irish myth about a man named Stingy Jack who tricked the devil and was denied entry to both heaven and hell, forced to wander the earth with only a carved turnip to light his way.

Costumes, another integral part of Halloween, offer a form of self-expression and escapism. They range from traditional horror figures like witches, ghosts, and vampires, to pop culture characters, reflecting societal changes and trends. The act of dressing up is a form of performative play, allowing individuals to explore different identities and roles.

Halloween in Modern Society

In modern society, Halloween serves as a conduit for community bonding and entertainment. It provides a socially sanctioned space for people to engage in playful behavior, often breaking away from their routine lives. It also offers an opportunity for creativity and imagination, as seen in the elaborate costumes, house decorations, and themed foods.

However, Halloween is not without controversy. Some criticize its commercialization, arguing that it detracts from the festival’s historical and cultural roots. Others express concern about safety issues related to trick-or-treating and the consumption of excessive amounts of candy.

In essence, Halloween is a complex festival that has evolved significantly over time. It encapsulates a fascinating blend of history, culture, and tradition, offering a unique lens through which to view societal changes. Despite its controversies, Halloween remains a cherished celebration, bringing communities together in a spirit of fun and creativity. As we move forward, it will be interesting to see how this dynamic festival continues to evolve and adapt.

Halloween is a religious holiday. It offers an opportunity for religious people to honor their dead and celebrate the fact that they live on in heaven. It is a pagan festival that originated from Celtic tradition of leaving food or treats on Samhain so that wandering evil spirits could eat them instead of doing harm to people’s homes.

Essay on Halloween | Purpose, Importance, Halloween Celebration

Halloween is a holiday celebrated on October 31. Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would extinguish their hearth fires and settle in for the night, dedicating the dark hours to feasting and revelry with their ancestors who had passed into the other world.

On All Hallows Eve people trick-or-treated, wearing costumes and masks to ward off roaming ghosts. Today many people dress up in costume for Halloween parties.

Halloween falls on the last day of October every year. On this night it is believed that all evil spirits have full sway over earth. There are various stories about how Halloween started but the most popular story is about All Hallows Eve.

It is believed that the Scottish Celts celebrated the New Year on November1. The day was dedicated to Samain, Lord of Death who visited his kingdom once a year with one hand behind his back. He searched every house for food and if any was found, he would put it in his cloak. The people put out food for him hoping that the next year would be plentiful. The place where Samain gathered his food supply is called Cnoc-an-Aingeal, the Hill of Angels. It is believed that on this hill fairies gather every Halloween night.

The next day known as All Hallows Day was celebrated by the Christians who wanted to thank God for preventing the Devil from plundering their food. They also prayed so that the dead would not return to earth on the holy day of All Saints.

The story of Christianity is interwoven with Halloween because it is believed that in 312 A.D., Constantine, after his victory over Maxentius, came to Rome and saw a vision of the Cross in the sky with the words, “In hoc signo vinces” (By this sign you will conquer). The next day he saw an Angel who told him to use this cross as his banner. Constantine ordered that all soldiers paint on their shields this symbol before they went into battle. He led his troops to victory against his enemy, so he kept the day sacred. This day is now known as St. George’s Day and it has been celebrated by Christians ever since.

Halloween was first introduced to America by Irish immigrants in the nineteenth century who called it “Samhain”. As time passed, people started to dress up like ghosts, goblins and witches. In the late nineteenth century, Americans started to decorate their houses with skeletons and face masks to ward off evil spirits.

They also carved turnips into lanterns called Jack-O-Lanterns that had a candle inside them. Today pumpkins are used as jack-o-lanterns instead of turnips. People also started to wear costumes and masks and it became a night for tricks and pranks as well as scares.

Halloween is now celebrated all over the world by both children and adults. It is usually celebrated on October 31st every year although some people celebrate it on November 1st or even on the last day of August. It is seen as a night of magic.

Children dress up in costume, go house to house trick-or-treating for candy and money. Trick-or-treating originated from the Celtic tradition of leaving food or treats on Samhain so that wandering evil spirits could eat them instead of doing harm to people’s homes.

Some people dress up as ghosts or goblins and go singing door-to-door. These people are called “guisers”. On All Hallows Eve, bonfires are lit to ward off evil spirits. Fireworks are also set off on that night, to scare the spirits away.

The Samhain festival is dedicated to the dead and welcome the new spirits who have come to spend the winter with their families. This is a night of light and darkness, for on that night it is believed that the boundary between this world and the other world becomes blurred. Souls from the other side are allowed to visit their loved ones again.

In parts of England people celebrate Halloween by going from house to house singing songs about Jack-O-Lanterns and asking for food in return. If they are given nothing they would put a curse on the householder.

Stories are told of witches, ghosts, demons and goblins who come out at Halloween to cause mischief or play evil tricks on humans. These spirits have various names but they are all known to be evil. Samhain is a national holiday in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and a civic holiday in Canada.

It is celebrated by most countries that were part of British Isles. In Scotland Samhain is not celebrated as it has its own Harvest festival called Hallowe’en (The Eve of All Hallows). The United States has come to celebrate Halloween more than Samhain.

In the United States, children dress up like ghosts or goblins and go door-to-door singing songs for candy. Some people tell scary stories about ghosts and goblins while others tell stories of horror. Some people play jokes on their neighbors on Halloween night.

Halloween falls on October 31st every year. It is seen as a night of magic with ghosts and witches flying around the streets with trick-or-treaters trying to get candy from their neighbors. Halloween has been celebrated for over 1,000 years. It was originally a Druid holiday called Samhain which marked the end of the harvest season and honored the dead.

This holiday is celebrated all over the world especially in countries that were once part of British Isles like Ireland, England, Canada and Australia among others. It is also celebrated by people who practice Voodoo or Santeria.

Halloween essay.

Every year, Halloween is celebrated on October 31. There are a variety of traditions associated with celebration of Halloween, but one of the most recognizable is trick-or-treating. On Halloween night, children dress up in costume and walk around their neighborhoods, knocking on doors and asking for candy. Many adults dress up as well, and some people even celebrate Halloween by dressing up their pets. In 2016, the most popular costumes for children were action hero and superhero costumes, while the most popular adult costume was a witch.1 An estimated 10 percent of Americans dressed up their pet as a pumpkin. Candy is the dominant food tradition associated with Halloween, but many of the most popular Halloween candies are available year-round. According to a 2017 survey, the top 5 most popular Halloween candies were Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Snickers, Twix, Kit Kats, and M&Ms.2 Even though candy corn is one of the few candies that is uniquely associated with Halloween, it was ranked second among the least-liked Halloween candies in the same survey.2

There are also other traditions associated with the celebration of Halloween, including haunted houses and community carnivals. In the days leading up to Halloween, many people decorate their houses with common symbols of Halloween, including spider webs, witches, skeletons, and – most prominently – jack-o’-lanterns. To make a jack-o’-lantern, people buy a large pumpkin, cut a hole in the top to remove the seeds and inner flesh of the pumpkin, and then use various sharp tools to carve an image on the front of the pumpkin. Then, they place a small candle or light inside the pumpkin to light up the image. Although it is traditional to carve a face on the front of a jack-o’-lantern, artistic pumpkin-carvers now carve elaborate images on the front of their pumpkins. People can also purchase templates to help them create jack-o’-lanterns that will truly impress their neighbors and any trick-or-treaters who visit their house.

These traditions have provided ample opportunity for retailers in the United States to capitalize on Halloween. In 2017, an estimated $9.1 billion was spent on Halloween festivities, which was an increase from $8.4 billion in 2016.1 This came out to an estimated $86.13 per household.1 Of the total spending, costumes accounted for the greatest proportion, at about $3.4 billion, while candy and decorations were the next two highest areas of spending, with each accounting for an estimated $2.7 billion.1 In total, about 7 out of 10 Americans said they planned to celebrate Halloween, and 95% of them said they would buy candy.1

Clearly, Halloween is a major commercial holiday in the United States, but it is important to recognize that the holiday is rooted in spiritual and religious traditions. Historians believe that the original precursor to Halloween was a Celtic festival known as Samhain, which can be traced back about two thousand years.3 Samhain was celebrated on November 1, and the pagans believed that on the night before, October 31, people returned from the dead as ghosts.3 They wore masks to disguise themselves from ghosts and set out food and wine on their doorsteps to prevent ghosts from coming inside in search of food.3 In later years, the Christian Church co-opted the Pagan traditions by naming November 1 as All Saints Day and the night of October 31 as All Hallows Eve.

Despite these roots, it is clear that Halloween has now developed into a largely secular holiday. Christians celebrate All Saints Day and All Souls Day on November 1 and November 2, but for the majority of Americans, the night of October 31, Halloween is merely an opportunity to dress up, eat candy, and have fun with spooky symbols and decorations.

Essay on Halloween / What is Helloween festival?

Introduction to halloween.

An essay on Halloween: Halloween is a fantastic opportunity to get together with friends and family for some spooky fun ! Halloween is celebrated in a variety of ways, but one of the most popular is trick-or-treating. Trick-or-treating is a Halloween tradition in which children, and occasionally adults, dress up in costumes and go door to door in their neighborhood asking for candy.

Many individuals also use Halloween decorations such as ghosts, goblins, and witches to decorate their homes. Halloween is a great time for everyone to have a good time!

Origin of Halloween

The 31st of October is Halloween. All Hallows’ Eve is also known as All Saints’ Eve. This is because some believe the holiday has its origins in a Christian celebration commemorating the deceased.

Others claim that the celebration has its origins in Ireland’s old harvest season rituals. However, in the United States, the focus is less on remembrances of the fallen and more on agriculture. It involves children dressing up in frightening costumes and going door to door begging for candy. Trick-or-treating is the term for this.

Customs associated with Halloween

Halloween is a worldwide holiday that is observed by many individuals. People celebrate Halloween for a variety of reasons, but one of the most common is that it is a time to dress up in costumes and have a good time. Many people think that ghosts and other supernatural entities come out to haunt the living on Halloween. For these reasons, Halloween is an exciting and enjoyable holiday for both children and adults.

Children commonly say “Trick or Treat” when knocking on a door or ringing the doorbell. The “trick” component is a ruse, implying that if the youngsters aren’t provided something tasty, they will conduct a prank. The children are subsequently given candies, raisins, or some other food treat by the homeowners.

halloween essay 100 words

Many homeowners adorn their homes in anticipation of the occasion, letting children know that they are welcome to ring the bell for candy. Jack-o’-lanterns, which are pumpkins with faces carved into them and candles inside, are common decorations.

When Halloween was first celebrated among the ancient Christians, Jack-o’-lanterns were supposed to ward off evil spirits. Originally, turnips were used instead of pumpkins. Black is a color that is frequently used in decorating.

Why Should We Not Celebrate Halloween? Essay

Halloween has been celebrated for many years as a day when people can dress up in ways that are not common every day. Apart from the costumes, candy gathering, and decorations – Halloween has a significant economic value to companies worldwide. Special offers for holiday and Halloween discounts have become an unassailable part of the annual celebration. However, the holiday itself has lost its notional value and meaning, along with being an unsafe holiday that only favors pockets of big corporations. Furthermore, due to the mentioned reasons, Halloween should not be celebrated.

Halloween has lost its notional value of the holiday, which is why it is not worth celebrating. The original name of the holiday was ‘All Hallow’s Eve, where hallow stood for holy or saint, translated from Old English (Amin 4). In other words, Halloween used to be a celebration of all saints and a cultural phenomenon equal to the Day of the Dead in other parts of the world. Moreover, since it is celebrated by the end of autumn and the beginning o winter, Halloween represents the harvest season celebration.

However, all the religious meanings put into Halloween have lost their value with time. Harvest no longer needs to be celebrated since people live in cities with all the conveniences of buying fruits and vegetables throughout the year. No one needs to work in the field to get bread; thus, everyone cannot celebrate the harvest. Having multiculturalism in the US, it might be inappropriate to celebrate Halloween as a day of the dead. This holiday was brought to America by immigrants and could have lost its value of traditions for the original culture when it was transferred to people outside that culture (Amin 4). In addition, religious groups might be offended by the celebration, and thus it is better to cancel the holiday.

Halloween is an unsafe celebration, and thus it should be canceled. One of the recent tragedies in Seoul, South Korea, became a worldwide spread of news over one night (Slow). In one of the famous areas for celebrating Halloween, called Itaewon, over a hundred thousand citizens marched through the streets celebrating Halloween. The horror of the holiday began at around ten the night when some people started falling on the ground, but the crowd never stopped. Over 150 people died in the crash, and over a couple hundred people were injured (Slow). One of the primary reasons the celebrations were out of control was the lack of police workers and ambulances in the area. Governmental authorities lacked action before the celebration; for instance, narrow streets that serve as the place for many deaths should have been closed (Slow). However, this year no measures were taken in advance, and thus police and fire authorities were experiencing struggles passing through the crowd. As one of the witnesses reported to BBC, he “had been to Halloween parties in Itaewon before, but says things were very different this year” (Slow 1). This example is only the most recent one, showing how dangerous a celebration can be.

Unfortunately, this case is only one of many cases when the government has no power to control the celebration. There is no guarantee that people dressed up and wearing masks will not attempt to attack innocent citizens, especially children. It is more dangerous during Halloween in places of mass gatherings because nobody can seem suspicious due to costumes. Therefore, governmental authorities should either establish specific regulations for Halloween celebrations or cancel the holiday in all states.

Another reason why Halloween should not be celebrated is that the holiday is populated by large corporations with the aim of profit and thus bears no social value. Companies actively use Halloween symbols such as pumpkins, witches, and ghosts in advertisements and promotions of their products. Some companies even produce unique products designed as Halloween symbols to attract more customers and increase sales. Such a strategy works every year, which can be seen from the graph of how much money citizens plan on spending during Halloween – numbers increase year by year (Wertz). For instance, in 2018, people bought pumpkins for 575.26 US dollars only during Halloween (Wertz 1). National Retail Foundation found that men plan to spend 98 US dollars on average for Halloween, and women plan to spend approximately 76 USDs (Wertz 1). The expenditure includes candies, costumes, and festivities for family and friendly gatherings, which primarily benefit businesses. Overall sales in 2019 were projected to be 8.8 billion US dollars, representing the businesses’ intention to make massive sales during Halloween and keep the holiday (Wertz 1). Marketing strategies of the brands influence people and result in celebrating the holiday, which has no conceptual, social, or traditional value compared to others. Moreover, thus, Halloween should not be celebrated in any of the United States.

To conclude, Halloween should not be celebrated due to three primary reasons. The first one is the absence of cultural value of the holiday for American citizens since the origins of the holiday remain with the original culture. Furthermore, Halloween was brought by immigrants, which means that traditions followed by Halloween cannot be celebrated by other nations correctly and with the same cultural value. The following reason is the unsafety of the celebration, which was demonstrated in the recent example of South Korea. The same tragedy can happen in any country; thus, the celebration is not worth the danger. Lastly, Halloween is only profitable to corporations and brands who promote it yearly and cause people to continue celebrating, hence spending money. These reasons validate the non-celebration of Halloween in any country.

Tiny Love Stories: ‘His Wife Invited Me Over’

Modern Love in miniature, featuring reader-submitted stories of no more than 100 words.

A banner of six green and black illustrations of people in various scenes: a man waving to a little boy through a window; a woman reading a book while a man peers over her shoulder; a woman and man holding hands as a man plays a violin on the street; two little children having a tantrum; a woman peeking out of the shower as a man approaches; two alien figures standing next to one another.

Our First Day as a Family

At the Hanoi orphanage, 4-month-old Leo would not meet my eye. Good! Leo’s withdrawal suggested he was attached to his current caregivers. If, after being separated from his birth mother, he attached once, he would likely attach again. Our first night, Leo cried inconsolably as I held him. His 12-pound body had already absorbed so much disruption. After hours of pacing, I opened our balcony door. The sun was rising onto our first full day as a family. I looked down at Leo’s face and saw the beginning of a smile. “We’re going to be OK,” I promised. — Anna Monardo

His Unwavering Belief

After connecting online, Shawn suggested we meet at a boxing class. Nervously, I told him I walk with braces and crutches, expecting hesitation. “Let’s meet anyway,” he said. When I committed to the New York City triathlon without knowing how to swim, he gave me swim gear for my birthday. Five years after meeting, we married; that same year, his support propelled me to become an Ironman World Champion triathlete. Shawn transported my gear, biked alongside me for safety and drove hours for me to do open-water swims and training. His unwavering belief in me defines our extraordinary journey. — Minda Dentler

Passing the Message On

In those early months of isolation and despair, when Covid hit and my wife left, I made a set of tiny cards with affirmations, placing them strategically throughout my apartment. Encountering them always felt like a surprise attack. LOVE YOURSELF. They refused to disappear into the décor. YOU ARE LOVEABLE. Grief crashed over me like a wave, but healing was like tide receding, imperceptible, until eventually the fear of drowning passed. YOU ARE ENOUGH. It felt right to release these paper notes-to-self at the beach, depositing them between rocks, in driftwood crevices and in the sand for others to find. — Emet Davis

A Wife’s Generosity

His wife invited me over. “He’d love to see you,” she said. She greeted me at the door, led me to where he sat in his wheelchair and left, giving us privacy. For five years my college sweetheart and I had danced, made love, spent weekends camping. Twenty years later A.L.S. had stolen his ability to walk. When he talked, I struggled to understand, but I recognized his laugh. By next summer’s visit, he was robbed of his voice. The following summer he was a sweet memory. I’ll always be grateful to his wife for giving us that time together. — Frances Scott
