How to File Your BOC-3 Form: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to File Your BOC-3 Form: A Step-by-Step Guide

Starting a new trucking company and doing all the administrative tasks that come with it can be stressful, overwhelming, and difficult to figure out on your own.

In this helpful guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about BOC-3 filing and how to do it so you can get your vehicle(s) out on the road.

What is a BOC-3 Form?

A BOC-3 form is a form you must fill in with the names and addresses of those authorized to receive legal documents on behalf of your business in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. While filling in a physical BOC-3 form is possible, most filing is now done online.

Who is required to file a BOC-3 Form?

Any new transportation company must file a BOC-3 before they can start operating within the United States, whether they plan to operate as a motor carrier, broker, or freight forwarder.

Can I file my own BOC-3 Form?

As with most DOT compliance requirements, it depends. If you are a motor carrier, only a BOC-3 designation of process agent can file for you, and it must be filed online.

But if you are a freight forwarder or broker that does not own and operate CMVs (commercial vehicles) you can file your BOC-3 yourself with a physical paper copy.

What is a BOC 3 Process Agent?

A BOC-3 process agent, also known as an FMCSA agent, is an individual or business appointed by you to receive legal documents on your behalf. This means that should you receive a summons, complaint, or another form of legal communication; they will receive that information first.

You need to have a BOC-3 designation of process agent in each state you operate in. That means that if you operate in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, you’ll need a BOC-3 agent in each state (so 4 BOC-3 agents in total).

Your BOC-3 process agents must also be available at that address during normal business hours (This is essentially the same as needing to have a registered agent in each state you operate in when you have an LLC).

Note that some organizations can cover you in multiple states, so your BOC-3 process agent may represent you in all the states you operate in. This is often the easiest way to file your BOC-3.

Do I Really Need FMCSA BOC 3 Process Agents?

In many cases, you are legally required to elect process agents to act on your behalf, so yes, you do. Even if you aren’t, working with FMCSA BOC-3 process agents is a good idea.

While their services range depending on who you work with, many provide a range of services that make your life easier and less stressful, such as legal counsel, communication with the FMCSA, and assistance in staying on top of your business’s administrative tasks, helping you avoid fines. They also file hundreds of BOC-3 forms , so they know exactly what is necessary.

How  much does it cost to file a BOC-3 Form?

BOC-3 filing cost varies from agent to agent, depending on what level of service you want them to provide you with. You may work with them only for your BOC-3 filing, or you may choose to purchase additional services from them to help make your life as a new business owner that much easier. With the complexity of FMCSA regulations, it’s a good idea to have the help of an expert – especially as you get your business started.

How long does it take to file a BOC-3 form?

Once you’ve selected your BOC-3 process agents and paid their fees, they’ll often file for you within a few business days. Once the FMCSA has received the document, they’ll mail your operating authority documents to you within 3-4 business days.

What documents are required for filing a BOC-3 Form?

If you’re a motor carrier, then your BOC-3 process agent(s) will need to fill out your form(s) for you. Whether you’re able to file it yourself or not, you’ll need the following information:

  • Name and address of the trucking company
  • The name and title of the person authorized to sign on behalf of the company
  • The name and address of the FMCSA BOC-3 process agent(s) for each state

How to File Your BOC-3 Form

To file your BOC-3 , you need to choose your BOC-3 processing agents. In most cases, it’s going to be easiest for you to do this with a “Blanket Legal Entity,” which is essentially a company that can represent you in all 50 states, leaving you free to operate your business as you wish. This is also the most cost-effective way to move forward, as you don’t have to waste time finding different BOC-3 agents and paying their various fees.

Do BOC-3 Forms Expire?

While BOC-3 forms do not expire, you must update yours when certain factors about your business change.

When to update your BOC-3 forms

You should refile your BOC-3 any time there is a name change, transfer of authority, or another change to the details you provided on your BOC-3.

What are the benefits of using a processing agent?

We provide a fast and easy filing process here at Foley, so if you want to simply enter your details and sit back and relax, we’re here to help. We’re happy to handle the entire process for you so you can focus on getting your new company up and running.

To work with us,  simply click here , provide us with the carrier’s legal name, MC number, and DOT number (as applicable), add your BOC-3 filing order to your cart, and check out.

In no more than 72 hours, we’ll file your BOC-3 agent processing form and you’ll soon receive your documentation.

The W-3 Form: Preparation and How to File

Filing Form W-3 with Form W-2 For Paper Filing

The W-2 Form and W-3 Form

  • When a W-3 Form Must Be Filed
  • Where You Can Get W-3 Forms
  • Completing Form W-3

When and How to File Form W-3

If you file w-2 forms online, if you make a mistake.

Form W-3 is a transmittal form with totals for all parts of Form W-2. The W-3 , along with the W-2, is sent to Social Security Administration each year to show the total earnings for all W-2 forms. The official title of the form is "Transmittal of Wage and Tax Statements."

The W-3 form is only used when you are sending paper copies of the W-2 form to the Social Security Administration. If you decide to file employee W-2 forms with the Social Security Administration online, you don't have to submit a W-3 transmittal form.

The W-2 form is an annual wage and tax form sent to two different places:

  • It's given to each employee, showing their total wages and taxes paid during the year, so they can use it for their income tax reporting, and
  • It's filed with the Social Security Administration (NOT the IRS!) to verify the information given to the employee.

You must add up wages for all your employees, using the information on all employee  W-2 form s to complete the W-3 form.

When a W-3 Form Must Be Filed

The deadline for giving W-2 forms to employees and sending W-2 and W-3 forms to the Social Security Administration is the same date: January 31 of the year following the tax year.

Because the date you give W-2 forms to employees and the date for filing W-2 and W-3 forms with the Social Security Administration is the same, you might want to give W-2 forms to employees earlier in January, to give more time to find errors.

If you don't think you'll be able to submit the W-2 and W-3 forms on time, you may request one 30-day extension by filing Form 8809 - Application for Extension of Time to File Information Returns . You must submit the application no later than the due date of the form. The extension isn't automatic, the IRS only grants extensions for "extraordinary circumstances or catastrophe."

Where You Can Get W-3 Forms

You can't just copy a W-3 form or print it off the Internet because the form is printed with a special red ink. You must buy the required type of W-3 forms from the same place you buy your W-2 forms, or you can have your payroll processor or tax preparer complete them for you. You can order them from the IRS by visiting their online ordering page for information returns. You may also be able to find these forms on business tax software programs .

Completing Form W-3—Boxes A Through H

Before you start working on the form, make sure you have the correct year's version. You want the version for the tax year, not the year you are preparing the form. For example, use the 2020 version for reporting 2020 taxes, even though you may be working on the form in 2021.

Information about the employer is entered in boxes A through H

Box a. Optional control number you can use for your own business purposes.

Box b. Kind of Payer. Most businesses check the box labeled "941" for "Kind of Payer". The 941 form  is the quarterly wage and tax report form completed by most employers. Other options include a household employer and others.

Kind of employer . Most for-profit businesses check the "none apply" box for "Kind of Employer". The other boxes are for non-profit organizations and federal government employers.

Box c Total number of Forms W-2. Add up the number of W-2 forms you are submitting.

Box d Establishment number helps employers identify different areas of their businesses either by location, subsidiary , or division. For example, you might want to separate out the W-2 forms for different states where employees work.

You must separate out W-2 and W-3 forms for each establishment if you identify establishment numbers in this section, or you can combine all your establishments and submit all W-2 forms together along with one W-3 form.

The amounts on other employment tax reports, including Form 941 and Form 944, must agree with amounts reported on Form W-3. If the amounts differ, you may be contacted by the IRS or SSA.

Boxes 1 Through 19—Wage and Tax Information

The items in the second section (boxes 1 through 19) are the same for both the W-2 and W-3. In the W-3 form, you must give totals for all boxes for all employees.

The General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 document includes reference guides for Box 12 Codes and Box 13 Retirement Plan Checkbox Decision Chart.

The final part of the form requires that you provide your contact information, including an email address.

See the detailed instructions for completing the W-3 form in this IRS publication: IRS General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3.

Form W-3 form must be sent to the SSA along with Copy A of the W-2 forms for each employee.

The filing address for paper forms W-2 and W-3 is:

Social Security Administration Direct Operations Center Wilkes-Barre, PA 18769-0001.

The totals for each item on the W-3 must equal the totals for all these items on all employee W-2 forms. The W-2 and W-3 also include total state wages and withholding for all employees.

The SSA encourages you to e-file W-2 forms. Remember, you don't need to include a W-3 form if you're filing online. You can use the SSA's Business Services Online (BSO) website. The BSO generates Form W-3 automatically based on your W-2 forms.

You MUST file online if you have a high number of W-2 forms.

  • For years including 2019, before you must electronically file if you have 250 or more W-2 forms.

The SSA has two options for electronic filing through its Business Services Online section:

  • W-2 Online:  You can use a fill-in W-3 form to submit up to 50 W-2 forms at a time.
  • File Upload:  You can use specific payroll tax software that formats files to SSA specifications for Filing Forms W-2 Electronically (EFW2).

If you make an error on a W-3 as a result of calculations or if one or more W-2s is incorrect, you must file a W-2c and a W-3c form with the Social Security Administration.

What is IRS Form 1040 Schedule 3?

help 3 form

Form 1040 isn't as long as it used to be, thanks to a few new schedules. This article provides guidance for filling out Schedule 3 and explains which taxpayers may need to use it.

Schedule 3, Form 1040

Part i: nonrefundable credits, part ii: other payments and refundable credits, who needs to file form 1040 schedule 3.

A brunette woman seated at a desk smiles as she fills out paperwork.

Form 1040 may be the first form you think about when it's time to file a tax return, but depending on your specific tax situation, it's likely that you may have to attach one or more additional forms and schedules to your return. One of these forms may be Form 1040 Schedule 3, which lists additional credits you might be able to claim as well as some payments that will get applied to your tax bill. Let's take a closer look at what this form is and what it entails.

In 2018, the IRS and the Treasury Department redesigned Form 1040 with simplification as the goal. For example, instead of choosing between three different versions of Form 1040 — the original and two pared-down versions, Form 1040A and Form 1040-EZ — every taxpayer will use Form 1040. Then, taxpayers with more involved returns attach extra schedules as needed.

The redesign didn't reduce the information taxpayers need to report to the IRS — it simply moved some less common lines off of the main Form 1040 and onto a new set of schedules.

Initially, there were six new schedules, but the IRS has since consolidated these down to three:

  • Schedule 1 for additional income and "above the line" deductions
  • Schedule 2 for additional taxes
  • Schedule 3 for additional credits and payments

Schedule 3 includes two main sections: nonrefundable credits, and other payments and refundable credits.

TurboTax Tip: Part II of Schedule 3 includes space for reporting taxes you might have paid in addition to withholding and estimated tax payments.

The previous version of Form 1040 had a handful of lines for reporting various tax credits. Now, only a few tax credits have their own lines on Form 1040, including:

  • Child Tax Credit
  • Earned Income Tax Credit
  • Additional Child Tax Credit
  • American Opportunity Tax Credit

The remaining credits go on Schedule 3, and Part I is for nonrefundable credits specifically.

Nonrefundable credits can reduce your tax bill to zero, but they can't get you a refund beyond the amount you paid in through withholding or estimated tax payments. The nonrefundable credits on Schedule 3 include:

  • Foreign Tax Credit
  • Child and Dependent Care Credit
  • Education credits
  • Retirement Savings Contribution Credit
  • Residential energy credits

Line 6 of the 2023 Schedule 3 is a catchall for other less common nonrefundable credits, including:

  • A credit for people who paid the alternative minimum tax on a prior tax return
  • Credit for the Elderly or Disabled
  • Adoption tax credit

Looking down the lines of Schedule 3, you may notice that some of these credits also require an additional form or schedule. For example, if you claim the Foreign Tax Credit, you may also need to attach Form 1116 to your return. If you claim any education credits, you'll also need Form 8863. You report the amounts from those forms and schedules on Schedule 3 and then report the total of these on Form 1040.

Part II of Schedule 3 is for reporting other taxes you might have paid in addition to withholding and estimated tax payments. These include:

  • Amounts paid with your extension request
  • Excess Social Security tax withheld (which typically impacts people who have more than one job during the year)

Part II is also where you report other refundable credits that don't have their own lines on Form 1040. Refundable credits are very similar to tax payments you made since they can get you a refund even if you don't owe any tax. The refundable credits on Schedule 3 include the:

  • Net premium tax credit
  • Amount paid with your extension request
  • Excess Social Security withholding

There's also a catchall line for other credits and tax payments that don't fit anywhere else.

Not everyone needs to file Schedule 3 with their federal income tax return. You only need to file Schedule 3 if you're claiming any of the tax credits or made any of the tax payments mentioned above.

Bootstrap 3 Forms

  • Bootstrap Tables
  • Bootstrap Buttons

Beautify your forms with Bootstrap's form classes.

Bootstrap provides a number of classes for styling forms, and specific form controls recieve some global styling. Many of the form classes can help with keeping a consistent look across your forms. They can also help with alignment so you shouldn't need to play around with alignments, padding, margins, etc just to get the form looking right.

Use Bootstrap's .form-control class against textual <input> , <textarea> , and <select> elements to apply width: 100% by default.

Wrap labels and controls inside a <div> with the Bootstrap .form-group class applied for optimum spacing.

Inline Form

Use Bootstrap's .form-inline class to make the form elements render as inline-block and left-aligned.

Note that this only applies when the viewport is at least 768 pixels wide. If the following form is not displaying inline, open the preview in a new window . If it still isn't displaying inline, you might need to view the example on a bigger screen.

Hidden Labels

Labels should always be provided on input fields, otherwise screenreaders will have trouble. You can hide the label if required, by using Bootstrap's .sr-only class.

Here, we use .sr-only to hide the labels. We also add a placeholder attribute to provide a hint to the user as to what to enter. Using the placeholder attribute in this manner is not recommended, as it can cause usability issues.

Horizontal Form

You can use Bootstrap's .form-horizontal to align labels and form controls horizontally.

When doing this, you need to use Bootstrap's grid classes to specify how many columns each element should span.

We also add Bootstrap's control-label class to the <label> element.

Form Control Size

You can use Bootstrap's .input-lg and .input-sm to increase or decrease the size of an input control.

Horizontal Form Group Size

You can use Bootstrap's .form-group-lg and .form-group-sm on form groups within a horizontal form (forms assigned the .form-horizontal class).

You may need to open the preview in a new window to see the full effect (and/or view it on a large screen).

Column Size

You can use Bootstrap's grid system to constrain input controls to a desired width.

You can use Bootstrap's .help-block class to indicate a block of help text for a given form control.

You should also use the .aria-describedby attribute to associate the help text with the form control. This will ensure that screen readers can announce the help text when the user focuses on the form control.

Bootstrap includes validation styles for form controls. These can be used to convey one of three validation states (success, error, or warning) to the user.

The three classes are .has-success , .has-warning , and .has-error . These should be applied to the parent element, so that any .control-label , .form-control , and .help-block element nested within that element will inherit the validation styles.

Also, textual input controls can make use of feedback icons. To do this, add the .has-feedback class to the same parent element as the validation styles. Also add the applicable glyphicon to the control.

As with previous examples, if you want text to only be used on screen readers, you can use Bootstrap's .sr-only class.

Static Control

You can use Bootstrap's .form-control-static on a <p> element to present plain text next to a label (eg. instead of using an input field).

‘Now Where Was I?’ Jon Stewart Is Back in His Old ‘Daily Show’ Seat

On Monday night, the longtime host of the Comedy Central news satire kicked off his new tenure in classic form.

By Jeremy Egner

Jon Stewart returned on Monday night as host of “ The Daily Show ,” the Comedy Central news satire he turned into a cultural force before leaving in August 2015. It was the beginning of a plan, announced in January , that will bring Stewart back to the show on Mondays through the presidential election. He will also serve as an executive producer.

“Why am I back?” he said. “I have committed a lot of crimes. From what I understand, talk show hosts are granted immunity — it doesn’t make a lot of sense, but take it up with the founders.”

Stewart’s first night back found him grayer — at one point he used his own wizened face as a prop in a joke about the presidential candidates’ ages. But he was otherwise in classic form.

Opening with “Now where was I,” Stewart mixed silliness and absurd, often self-deprecating, jokes with righteous indignation as he kicked off the 2024 edition of one of the show’s signature franchises, its “Indecision” election coverage. Proposed titles, he said, included “Indecision 2024: American Demockracy”; “Indecision 2024: Electile Dysfunction”; and “Indecision 2024: Antiques Roadshow.” He riffed, from his familiar left-leaning perspective, on the Super Bowl and the Taylor Swift conspiracy theories that surrounded it.

“It’s almost like the right’s ridiculous obsession with politicizing every aspect of American life ruins everything,” he said.

Later he anchored a bit that found the show’s correspondents Ronny Chieng, Desi Lydic, Michael Kosta and Dulce Sloan reporting from the same diner, a goof on the campaign coverage trope. They and Jordan Klepper, who did a desk bit, will take turns hosting the show Tuesdays through Thursdays. The guest was Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor in chief of The Economist.

“The Daily Show” posted his opening segment on its YouTube feed just before it aired on Comedy Central.

In one sense, Stewart is the latest in a line of celebrity fill-ins who have hosted “The Daily Show” since Trevor Noah left in December 2022. Of course, Stewart is the person who, over 16 years as host, transformed “The Daily Show” into late-night’s most vital and influential program.

A pop culture snark-fest under its original host, Craig Kilborn, “The Daily Show” evolved into a topical satire after Stewart took over in 1999, and it became a news source for portions of its audience, even as Stewart maintained that his primary goal was to entertain, not inform. It was also a prolific talent incubator: Alumni including Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, Samantha Bee and Hasan Minhaj went on to host their own shows. Others, like Steve Carell, Ed Helms and Jessica Williams, found success in Hollywood.

It was another former “Daily Show” correspondent, Noah, who succeeded Stewart as host. But the show’s ratings and profile declined, part of a general downturn in the cultural relevance of late-night shows in the streaming age. At the same time, Stewart’s own post-“Daily Show” professional efforts have been lackluster. A deal to develop a topical animated show for HBO went nowhere, and his talk show for Apple TV+, “ The Problem With Jon Stewart ,” ended last year after 20 episodes when Stewart and Apple executives disagreed over the show’s creative direction.

There was perhaps a subtle reference to Stewart’s previous job on “The Daily Show” on Monday night. “We’re going to have so much we’re going to talk about this year,” he said. “Obviously, the elections, maybe we’ll talk about China, maybe we’ll talk about A.I., maybe something a little lighter, Israel-Palestine.” Artificial intelligence and China were two of the subjects that created friction at “The Problem.”

“The Problem” never got much traction, aside from generating a few viral interview clips and receiving an Emmy nomination last year for outstanding variety talk series. In a twist, that award went instead to “The Daily Show,” the only time the Noah version won. Stewart’s “Daily Show” won the award for outstanding variety series award 10 times in a row, from 2003 to 2012.

In an interview on “CBS Mornings” on Monday, Stewart said he is returning to “The Daily Show” because he wants a platform during the election.

“I very much wanted to have some kind of place to unload thoughts as we get into this election season, and I thought I was going to do it over at, they call it, Apple TV+,” he said. However, he added, “they felt that they didn’t want me to say things that might get me in trouble.”

He went on: “I just thought, who better to comment on this election than someone who truly understands two aging men past their prime?”

Form W-4: How to fill out a W-4 in 2023

Filling out a W-4 form is a big decision-making moment. Why? Because W-4 directly affects the amount withheld on your paycheck and your potential tax refund. That said, it’s a lot more than adding your name and checking a few boxes.

You’ll need to account for all jobs you have and for your spouse if applicable and desired. Plus, you should factor in any additional income, credits, and tax deductions available to you.

This article will address the main steps in how to fill out a W-4 form and how you might fill it out for specific situations. To learn more about the form itself, read our post: “ What is a W-4 Tax Form ?”

Want to make it easy? Skip the manual process and use our W-4 paycheck tax calculator to get a completed W-4 tax form. You don’t need to know how to fill out a W-4, because we do it for you with the details you provide.

w-4 worksheet

What is a W-4?

Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form W-4, Employee’s Withholding Certificate, is generally completed at the start of any new job. This form tells your employer how much federal income tax withholding to keep from each paycheck. This form is crucial in determining your balance due or refund each tax season.

How to fill out Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form W-4 for a job

There are a few nuances when it comes to filling out IRS Form W-4 for a new job. For instance, if you withhold too much, you can end up with a large refund. If you withhold too little, you can create a balance due and potentially an underpayment penalty. Check out our step-by-step process below, which will walk you through how to fill out a W-4 form.

How to fill out W-4s: Step-by-step

Ready to dive into how to fill out your W-4? We’ve got the steps here; plus, important considerations for each step.

Step 1: Enter your personal information

First, you’ll fill out your personal information including your name, address, social security number, and tax filing status. You can choose from Single, Married Filing Separately, Married Filing Jointly, Qualifying Surviving Spouse, or Head of Household.

While you can stop here and allow your employer to simply withhold at default levels, the easiest path may not be the best. To get the right balance between paycheck and your refund, you might need to complete one or more additional steps – especially if you want to avoid additional withholding or surprises when you file.

Step 2: Account for all jobs you and your spouse have

Unlike when you filled out W-4 forms in the past, you’ll have to fill out your W-4 with your combined income in mind, including self-employment. Otherwise, you may set up your withholding at too low a rate.

To fill out this part correctly, you have three choices. You can:

  • Use an online estimator to determine a specific amount to have your employer withhold each pay period. This method works the best if you have income from self-employment, because it helps allow for self-employment taxes in addition to income taxes.
  • Use a worksheet attached to the W-4 form if there are multiple jobs in your household (either you have multiple jobs or you and your spouse each work). Both the online estimator method and worksheet method work well if you’d prefer not to give your employer information about other income you might have. Or,
  • Check a box and have your employer withhold at a default rate. Checking the box works best if all the jobs have a similar amount of pay.

Checking the box for the default method may seem like the easiest choice. But this will sometimes result in a refund check and much smaller paychecks throughout the year. If you are in a good enough financial situation, this may not seem like a big deal. But for some taxpayers, they’d like to maximize their paycheck amount while making sure their tax liability is covered for the year.

Step 3: Claim your children and other dependents

You want to make sure only one of you allows for child-related tax credits through withholding. Generally, it’s best to allow for child-related tax credits on the Form W-4 of the highest paying job. If you and your spouse each allow for child-related tax credits on your W-4, it will likely result in not enough withholding, and having to pay an additional amount to the IRS at the end of the year.

Step 3 of the W-4 form will ask you how many qualifying children you have under age 17, and how many other dependents you have. After you complete Step 3, your employer will know exactly how much to decrease withholding to allow for your children.

This is also where you can reflect any other tax credits as well if you want the amount withheld from your paycheck. See the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) W-4 Form instructions for details.

Step 4: Make other adjustments

Here you can account for other income you receive, deductions you might qualify for and any extra withholding amounts you’d like your employer to take.

  • Other income – Amounts added here will increase your withholding
  • Deductions – Amounts added here will decrease your withholding
  • Extra withholding – Amounts added here will increase your withholding

Just like it’s important for only one spouse to allow for child-related tax credits on their W-4, it’s important that you only allow for other income or deductions on one W-4.

If you expect to itemize deductions instead of claiming the standard deduction, you can also use a deductions worksheet attached to the W-4 form to ask your employer to decrease withholding by a specific amount each pay period.

If you need to claim an exemption from withholding, you can still do that on the new W-4 form. You are exempt from withholding if you owed no federal tax the prior year and you expect to owe no federal tax for the current year. To claim you are exempt, you write “Exempt” on the new W-4 form in the space below Step 4(c).

Step 5: Sign and date your form

The hard part is now done. All that’s left to do is sign and date your form and hand it off to your employer.

How to fill out your W-4 to get more money

As mentioned at the top of this post, your W-4 withholdings affect what’s taken out of your paycheck each period and your potential refund. In fact, they are related in that taking more taxes out of your pay can mean a larger refund—and the inverse can be true.

If you’d like to know how to fill out your W-4 form to get more money, you’ll want to pay close attention to Steps 3 and 4. This can work two ways.

  • How to fill out your W-4 to get more money in your paycheck: The easiest way to do this is to add an amount to Step 4c.
  • How to fill out your W-4 to get more money back as a refund (or reduce what you might owe): You could reduce the amounts on 4a (other income) or 4c, or increase the number on line 4b (deductions).

When to fill out a new W-4

Additionally, any time you have a major life event you should consider updating your W-4. A marriage, divorce, a new baby, or a child turning 17 will have an effect on your taxes and should be taken into consideration in filling out your W-4.

Let’s take a look at a few real-life situations to outline considerations regarding how to fill out W-4 if those situations apply.

How to fill out a W-4 if you’re married and you both work

As mentioned in the steps above, couples should account for all jobs in their household when they fill out their W-4s. In fact, we recommend that married couples do this at the same time if they are both employed.

Coordination is the key when considering how to fill out your W-4 if you’re married and both of you work. This is because certain factors should only be accounted for on one spouse’s W-4, such as deductions and dependents.

If you try to account for them on both spouse’s forms, you’ll end up withholding too little and could face a hefty tax bill if not penalties at tax time.

What if you’re married, filing jointly and completing your W-4 form? If you file as Married Filing Jointly — and you both earn around the same amount, there’s a box you can check to indicate that (it’s part of line 2c). This can help you not withhold too much in taxes.

How to fill out a W-4 form if you’re a student

Students may wonder how to fill out their W-4, especially if they’re eligible to be claimed by their parents. In general, this comes down to your age and whether you earn enough to file a tax return in the first place. In many cases, you can just fill out step 1 and sign on step 5. Check out our post on summer jobs and withholding , which covers some of these concepts.

How to claim 1 on W-4; How to fill out W-4 claiming 0

Although the Tax Cuts and Jobs Acts of 2017 is a few years behind us, we often still hear clients ask about how to claim 1 on a W-4 or how to fill out their W-4 claiming 0. These concepts have to do with allowances, which no longer apply to W-4s after tax reform.

Starting with the 2020 Form W-4, you can no longer request an adjustment to your withholding by increasing or decreasing allowances. Instead of using allowances, you will use other parts of the W-4 to tell your employer how much to withhold from your paycheck (as described above).

How to fill out a W-4 form: Getting help

Filling out W-4 Forms can be tricky for some. That’s why we’re here. H&R Block tax professionals can be a great help in this area. In fact, you can get your return reviewed and determine if you over-withheld or under-withheld during the year.

If you determine that a change should be made, you can provide a new W-4 to your employer. You should be able to make these changes at any point during the year; and the sooner the better if a change needs to be made!

How to make sure you get your $800 TABOR refund now that Colorado is accepting tax returns

help 3 form

Itching to get your $800 TABOR refund (or $1,600, if you're married)?

You're closer than ever now that the Colorado Department of Revenue has begun processing tax forms for the 2023 tax year (due in 2024).

The department announced Monday it is now processing returns, a couple of weeks after the federal government began accepting returns.

Colorado law requires the state to refund revenues that exceed certain caps. This is due to the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights, known as TABOR. Some of this money is refunded through the income tax filing process.

For the 2023 tax year, the Colorado legislature opted to make all refunds equal. Single filers will receive $800, and married couples filing jointly will receive $1,600.

In past years, refund amounts were dependent on your income. And in late 2022, refunds were given in the form of a check and branded as Colorado Cash Back.

Don't miss out: You must file a Colorado tax return to get your TABOR refund

If you aren't required to file a federal tax form and don't have tax liability in Colorado, you'll still want to file in Colorado this year so you can get the refund.

Here's help on how to do that:

How to file for free

Coloradans can e-file their state income taxes for free through the state's  Revenue Online  service.

The  IRS Free File program  lists several services that allow people who make under $79,000 adjusted gross income to file their federal — and sometimes their state — income taxes online for free.

Also, Colorado has a list of tax help resources at tax.colorado.gov/community-tax-help .

There's a Taxpayer Helpline at 303-238-7378, open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. You can also make an appointment to visit a Service Center in person at tax.colorado.gov/visit-a-service-center.

Check the status of your Colorado tax refund

After your state return has been filed, you can check the status of your refund at https://www.colorado.gov/revenueonline/ by clicking on "Where's My Refund for Individuals" in the box labeled "Refund Resources." Just be sure to have your Social Security number and the amount of your expected refund handy (or alternatively, your PIN/letter ID).

You can get more information on tracking your tax refund at tax.colorado.gov.

Do I have to count my last TABOR refund as income this year?

Officials in Gov. Jared Polis' and Sen. Michael Bennet's offices said the IRS told them the TABOR refunds will not be taxable for the 2023 tax year .

That means you don't have to report any Colorado Cash Back refund received in 2023 as income on your federal taxes this filing season.

Tax season 2023: Here's what you need to know before filing income taxes this year

Coloradoan reporter Sady Swanson contributed to this report.

The <label> tag defines a label for many form elements.

The <label> element is useful for screen-reader users, because the screen-reader will read out loud the label when the user focuses on the input element.

The <label> element also helps users who have difficulty clicking on very small regions (such as radio buttons or checkboxes) - because when the user clicks the text within the <label> element, it toggles the radio button/checkbox.

The for attribute of the <label> tag should be equal to the id attribute of the <input> element to bind them together.

Radio Buttons
