What fees you can expect to pay and how to avoid spending thousands..

In this guide

How much do college applications cost?

What other costs should i consider, how one application can cost as much as $4,688, 7 ways to save on your college application, i finished my application. are there other costs i need to consider, bottom line, frequently asked questions.

Need a student loan?

You graduated. Now what?

We compare the following providers

College application fees cost an average of $43, according to a 2017 survey by US News and World Report. However, the most common application fee was $50.

Generally, the more exclusive the school, the more it costs to apply. But that’s not always the case. Some schools completely forego the application fee. And most allow students with financial hardship to apply for a fee waiver.

Application fees for top US colleges

Here’s how much it costs to apply to an undergraduate degree program at popular colleges and universities around the US. Graduate applications are typically more expensive. And some schools also have a different fee for transfer or international students.

Even if you only apply to Ivy League school, the application fee might not be the most expensive part of the college admissions process. How much you fork over depends on how much you want to invest in your college application.

SAT and ACT fees

Most colleges require students to submit SAT or ACT scores when they apply. Some states allow students to take these tests for free the first time. Otherwise you have to pay, unless you qualify for a fee waiver.

In fact, the cost of registering for the SAT can be more expensive than some college application fees. If you take it more than once to try to increase your scores, you’ll end up paying even more.

International students might have to pay more to take the SAT, since other countries sometimes have additional processing fees. If you miss your test date, register late or want to change your test date, you also often have to pay more.

Other SAT fees

Other act fees, sat and act score report fees.

Registering for the SAT and ACT is only part of the cost. You also have to get your score report to your schools, which comes with a fee. You generally get a number of free score reports, though most students end up requesting more. Score report requests are eligible for a fee waiver, but other fees might not be.

AP exam fees

  • Regular AP exam: $94 per exam
  • AP Capstone: $142 per exam

Taking AP courses strengthens your college application and helps you save on tuition by allowing you to earn credits for the fraction of the cost of an actual class. But it does increase the upfront cost of applying to college. Like with the SAT and ACT, low-income students might be able to qualify for a fee waiver.

Test prep courses

Test prep courses could be worth the investment if they can boost your score enough to get you into your dream school. But they can easily top $1,000 when you sign up.

Many companies offer the choice between online and classroom tutoring. Princeton offers private tutors starting at $150 an hour, which includes access to its SAT and ACT self-paced courses.

While more personalized attention can help if you’re a student who struggles, take a diagnostic test first to find out how much studying you really need to do. If you’re close to your target score, you might not need to do more than buy a $20 test prep guide and work through it on your own.

College essay tutoring

  • Cost: $100 to $500 per hour

Depending on where you apply, your college essay could be even more important than your grades and test scores. A tutor can help you figure out what you want to say and navigate that tight word limit.

High school transcript fees

  • Cost: Varies by school

Some schools charge students a fee for sending your high school transcript to each college. If you can’t afford the fee, reach out to your guidance counselor to find out if there are fee waivers available.

Factor in test prep, taking the SAT and ACT multiple times, rushing score reports and tutoring and you can end up with a nearly $5,000 bill for that first college application. Here’s how it breaks down:

Want even more tutoring, AP exams and subject tests? Apply to more than one school? You might have to pay even more.

It’s possible to avoid some fees when you’re applying to college. Before you sign up for test prep or submit your application, consider these options for lowering the cost of applying.

1. Apply to no-fee schools

Not all schools charge an application fee — it’s possible one you’ve had your eye on doesn’t. Colleges don’t always advertise that they don’t have an application fee. If you can’t find one listed on their website, give their admissions office a call to make sure there’s no fee to apply.

Schools that rely on the Common App often don’t charge an application fee, though you might have to pay one if the school requires any supplementary forms.

2. Apply early decision to your top choice

Applying early decision can potentially cut down on costs in a few ways. If you get in, you can save on the following fees:

  • Application fees to additional colleges
  • Extra score report fees
  • Transcript fees

3. Be thoughtful about your choices

The more schools you apply to, the more application, score report and transcript fees you have to pay. Think about what you really want out of a school and where you can realistically get in.

Even if you’re at the top of your class, it might not be worth applying to every Ivy League school — you can only attend one, after all. Experts also recommend you apply to at least one safety school, a school of your choice that you have a chance of getting into.

4. Request a fee waiver

Low-income students can often apply for a test or application fee waiver. You can apply for an SAT and ACT fee waiver when you register for the test.

Each school has its own process for waiving application fees — if they even offer it. Some request that you apply through the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), the College Board or the Common App. Others might have an application you can complete on their admissions website.

5. Take the SAT or ACT on standby

Both the SAT and ACT charge slightly lower prices to students who sign up to take the test only if there’s room. While you might show up at the testing center only to be turned away, you won’t pay the fee unless you actually test. It’s also a good way to avoid paying late fees — you don’t have to register on time to be waitlisted.

6. Take advantage of free study resources and tutoring

Many high schools and communities offer free test-prep courses and college essay tutoring at little to no cost. Start by reaching out to your high school guidance counselor. Or look into resources offered at community and activist centers in your area.

7. Apply to a college that doesn’t require test scores

Another way to save on test-related costs is to avoid them altogether. Many top schools are test-optional, meaning they don’t require or even consider SAT or ACT scores.

Apply to only these schools and you could still get into a strong school without having to sit through hours of test prep and a long exam.

11 test-optional schools

  • Bowdoin College

Yes. Even before you sign up for school and start paying tuition and fees, there are a few expenses that might crop up.

  • Visiting colleges. Some colleges require an interview, which could mean you have to travel. Or you might want to visit some schools in person before making a decision. This could easily set you back over $1,000 in airfare, hotels and other travel expenses.
  • Orientation costs. Schools sometimes require incoming first-year students to participate in a bonding experience like a camping trip before the start of the first semester.
  • NCAA registration fees. Student athletes have to register with the NCAA before they start school. This costs $90, though fee waivers are available.
  • Deposits. Some schools require an admissions and housing deposit before you start the semester, which varies by college.
  • Financial aid applications. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) might be free, but some schools require you to also submit a CSS profile . This costs $25 for the first school and $16 for each additional college if you fill it out before getting your acceptance letters.

The cost of college doesn’t start with tuition and fees. It begins with SAT or ACT prep courses, tutoring and AP classes. But you don’t necessarily have to pay thousands of dollars, since there are a few ways around these fees.

You can find other ways to cut down on costs with our college savings hacks . Or learn more about paying for college by reading our student loans guide .

Are there any other costs international students should consider?

Yes. Applying to a US school as an international student is typically more expensive. SAT and ACT score reports might come with higher processing fees. You might have to take the TOEFL or IELTS if English isn’t your first language. Application fees might be higher, and many fee waivers aren’t available to nonresidents.

Research how to pay for school when you’re an international student to learn about your financial aid options.

How many schools should I apply to?

It depends, though generally you should have at least one safety school, one achievable option and one reach.

However, the number of schools you apply to depends on how much time you have to devote to each application and how much you want to spend. The more schools you apply to, the more it can cost. And you might not be able to spend the time you need making each application the best it can be.

Does the SAT fee waiver cover the cost of sending scores?

Yes, you can get a fee waiver to cover additional score reports on top of the registration costs.

How Much to Charge For Tutoring (2023 Rates Per Hour)

Tutoring is a great way to make some extra money, especially if you do it online as a way to work from home. But when you’re not going through a company that sets the tutoring rate per hour for you, you’ve probably asked yourself the obvious question: “How much should I charge for tutoring?”

While the answer can vary a bit depending on any qualifications and experience you have as well as what you’ll be teaching, there are some guidelines that can help you make sure you’re setting the right tutor rates.

I’ll even show you some of the best tutoring rate calculators out there to give you some idea of how much to charge for tutoring in your specific area!

Table of Contents

How much should I charge for tutoring?

You should charge around $25 an hour for tutoring. However, your exact tutoring rate will vary based on the age and background of your students, your own experience and the complexity of the subject. Rates can start at around $15 per hour and go all the way up to $125 per hour for private classes for older students.

That’s still a fairly large range though, as there are some specific points you should keep in mind when determining exactly how much to charge for your own tutoring services.

It’s also worth noting that, in some cases, it won’t be up to you to decide how much you should charge for tutoring. Many of these online tutoring jobs , for example, are done through online tutoring companies that will set your rate based on their perception of your experience, qualifications and subject matter you’re teaching.

This can be good for helping you to avoid having to figure out your own private tutor rates per hour. At the same time, it’s good to have a solid idea of how much you should be charging to make sure the company that hires you isn’t underpaying you for your work.

How to price tutoring services

The price of tutoring services can range from $15 per hour to up to $125 per hour, with around $25 to $55 an hour being the average. The exact price will depend on your qualifications, the age of the students, the subject you’re teaching and whether these are private sessions or in a group.

That is, it’s unfortunately not as simple as being handed a tutoring rate per hour. Instead, there are some considerations to keep in mind when determining how much should a tutor charge per hour, namely:

  • Your qualifications – You don’t need formal qualifications to be an online tutor. But if you have an English degree and you’re offering to teach English to high school or college students, you can charge higher tutoring prices accordingly
  • The age of your students – As a general rule, the older your students are, the more you can charge. This is because older students are generally going to need to learn about more complex topics, which you should be paid more to teach
  • The subject you’re teaching – Any subject that requires more specialized knowledge is going to command a higher rate. For example, teaching 12th grade Chemistry is probably going to get you a higher rate than 12th grade English – depending, of course, on exactly what you’re teaching
  • When you’re tutoring – If you tutor during business hours or even just after school, your tutor rates per hour will usually be less than someone working as a tutor later at night or as a weekend job . Some flexibility is needed as a tutor to work around your students’ schedule, but it’s also expected that you’ll charge for this flexibility
  • Private vs group sessions – Like most things, your private tutor rates per hour are clearly going to be higher than if you tutor in a group
  • Timing – If you’re focusing on tutoring students in preparation for exams, you may find that you’re able to charge more in the weeks and months just before these exams. This is largely because there’ll probably be more demand for your services, allowing you to increase your rates accordingly
  • Your location – Different cities have different average rates you should consider when wondering how much you should charge for tutoring. For example, if there’s a major university in your area, you may be able to charge more for tutoring college students – or the average rate could be less as a lot of these students may also be tutoring younger students, meaning there’s a higher supply of tutors.
  • The amount of preparation required – Ask any teacher: lesson prep takes up a massive chunk of your time. This means that if you’re expected to do a lot of preparation before any tutoring session, you’re more than able to factor this into your rate as well.

Is there a tutoring rate calculator?

While there isn’t one tutoring rate calculator that will consider every factor needed to determine how much to charge for tutoring, you can use websites that show average salaries in your area as a tutoring pricing calculator. While these won’t consider every aspect, they’re a good starting point when considering how much you should charge for tutoring.

For example, when looking for how much to charge for tutoring on Reddit, all of the answers talk about how the answer is very much location dependent. Just check out some of the responses here , here and here for an idea on how much this matters.

How much to charge for online tutoring

For online tutoring, your rates will usually be between $18 and $30 per hour. However, the exact rates will generally be set by the online tutoring company you work with and will depend on factors like your experience, the age of the students, the complexity of the subject and how highly rated you are on their platform.

Much like the points you need to consider for determining how much should a tutor charge per hour for in-person lessons, the more specialized your knowledge and the content you’re teaching, the higher your rates will be able to be. In some cases, this can very easily make tutoring one of the highest paying online jobs out there.

It’s also very much going to depend on the individual company. When looking at the Tutor.com pay rate on Glassdoor , for example, their average tutor rate per hour is $12, which is pretty low.

On the other hand, most of the tutoring companies in this list of online tutoring jobs start well above this. Chegg Tutors, for example, starts at $20 per hour and MagicEars, where you teach English to students in China, is upfront that their hourly rates range between $18 and $26.

Similar rates are also on offer for teaching English online to Japanese students .

This means that while it may not be up to you to set your own rate within this range, at least you have an idea of what your fee will be when starting what can be a great work from home job .

Can you make a living as a tutor?

You can definitely make a living as a tutor, with many tutors generating a full time salary from their work in this field. This is particularly the case for private tutors of older students who can often charge higher hourly rates than the average.

This won’t be possible for everyone and will very much depend on your availability and the amount you’ve decided to charge for tutoring. After all, it’s pretty obvious that if you’re only free for a few hours per week, you’re going to earn less by working part time than someone who has the time to make themselves available whenever their students ask.

But that said, it’s certainly more than possible to live off a tutor’s salary. While you won’t be crazy rich, you can be comfortable, especially knowing that you’re able to make money in an hour doing this.

How can I make money tutoring?

To make money tutoring, there are a few things you can do to make sure you’re making as much money as possible:

  • Tutor in line with your experience or qualifications – It may sound obvious, but if you have any formal training or qualifications in a certain subject, it’s a good idea to offer your tutoring services in that same field. This is because people will pay more if you’re qualified on the understanding that you’re bringing specialized knowledge to the table.
  • Try to make yourself available when your students are – Most students, whether in school or college, are much more likely to want to schedule tutoring sessions in the afternoon or on weekends (although you can also tutor during vacation periods, which is actually a great way for teachers to make extra money in the summer given how good teacher tutoring rates can be). This means that only making yourself available during business hours could mean you’re limiting your money making opportunities
  • Focus on private tutoring sessions – Your private tutor rate per hour is going to be higher during one-to-one sessions so if you’re short on time, focusing on these can ensure you’re maximizing your earnings.
  • Do both online and in-person tutoring – There’s no reason to limit yourself to just one of these. While, as a very general rule, you can often charge more for in-person tutoring, your potential student base online is massive. This means that offering both can be a good way to make sure you have as many clients as possible to earn as much as you can.

Subject-specific examples of how much money a tutor makes an hour

As mentioned, you’re going to be able to charge higher average tutoring rates for teaching certain subjects.

This isn’t going to be the only factor to consider when wondering how much you should charge for tutoring – especially when you consider how much it can vary depending on where you’re located.

For example, the age of your students will matter too, given that this will likely impact the complexity of what you’re teaching them. For example, the tutoring rates per hour for high school will almost certainly be more than tutoring rates for elementary students

But it can definitely help to see how much do tutors charge per hour already in your relevant subject, at least as a base point to see if you should align yourself with them too.

SAT tutors can charge up to $125 per hour depending on your area and your qualifications. However, in some areas, in-demand SAT tutors charge up to $1,000 per hour for SAT prep, although this is less common.

As seen in the previous example, this is an advertised rate for tutors in specific subjects helping with test prep. At the same time, it’s going to be very location dependent.

But I’m not kidding about those crazy SAT tutoring rates per hour. Just take a look at this article from someone who charged up to $1,000 per hour for SAT prep.

How much do private tutors charge as Biology tutor rates?

Biology tutor rates can be anywhere from $40 to $100 per hour, with the higher rates being possible if you have a science-based degree. That’s because most science subjects need the tutor to have some sort of specialized knowledge to teach this well, especially to high school and college students.

This means that if you have or are studying for a science-based degree, you should definitely use this to your advantage to set your tutoring rates per hour higher.

How much are high school Chemistry tutor rates?

High school Chemistry tutors should charge between $30 and $70 per hour, depending on the complexity of the material they’re teaching. This reflects the fact that Chemistry tutors generally need experience in this field or specialized knowledge from their own studies that allows them to teach this well.

People, in turn, are generally willing to pay for this experience, allowing you to set your rates at the higher end of the scale.

How much should I charge for tutoring reading?

If tutoring students in reading, you should charge between $15 and $50 per hour. This, however, will very much depend on how old the student is. If they’re younger, like in elementary school, and their parents are looking for help in improving their reading skills, your rates may be lower.

That said, this isn’t always the case, especially if a child has special needs and the parents want a specialist to help them catch up. If you have training with special needs students, you can certainly increase your rate in those cases.

Similarly, as your students get older and the material presumably gets more complex, you can raise your tutor rate per hour accordingly.

What are the tutoring rates per hour for middle school students?

You should charge $15 to $25 an hour for tutoring middle school students on average. This may increase up to $35 an hour for advanced courses, depending on the area and your own experience in the subject.

While it’s probably not surprising that your average tutoring rates per hour for middle school students will be slightly less than for older students, don’t undercharge yourself.

In particular, good tutors in AP subjects are in high demand, which you can definitely use to your advantage when figuring our how much to charge for tutoring these students.

In terms of how much do tutors charge if you yourself are a middle school student looking to tutor other kids at your school, that’s definitely a great way for you to make some extra money. Just perhaps don’t expect to charge quite as much as an adult tutor would, as parents may not be willing to pay it – at least not until you prove yourself.

What are the tutoring rates per hour for elementary school students?

Tutoring rates per hour for elementary school students are in the range of $15 to $25. However, this can go up depending on your location, the subject matter and your level of expertise, especially if you’re tutoring in a specialized area.

The best way to figure out the right rate for how much tutors charge for elementary students near you is to scope out the local market. Ask local tutors, check online or even call up schools in your area to make sure you’re not under- (or over-) charging.

How much should I charge for tutoring as a high school student?

A high school student should charge between $15 and $30 per hour on average for tutoring services, with the exact amount to depend on where you are located, the complexity of the subject and your background in the relevant topic.

Tutoring is a great job for teenagers as their availability is often the same as their clients. They’ve also often just learned the same subjects that they’re teaching, meaning they’re extremely up to date in the current school curriculum on that topic.

teen tutoring another teen

Of course, a teenage tutor who’s still in school isn’t going to be able to charge as much for tutoring as a college student or someone who already has their degree.

But for, say, middle and elementary school students, hiring a teenager as their tutor can still produce excellent results – while allowing teens who want to make money the chance to earn a solid hourly rate.

You could even find yourself teaching other high school students, which may feel weird at first, but parents could be willing to pay for this, especially if you have been really successful in the subject yourself in the previous year.

How much to charge for group tutoring?

As a general rule, your per student rate for group tutoring should be around 75% of your rate for private students. This means that if your private tutoring rate is $40 an hour, you should charge $30 per student in a one-hour group tutoring session.

This can, of course, mean that you can actually earn more per hour by having several students in a group compared how much you would charge as a private tutor. At the same time, this is going to mean much more work for you, both during the tutoring session to make sure everyone is keeping up and when preparing for the lesson.

This means that it’s up to you whether you prefer to stick with one-to-one lessons or branch out into group sessions. Of course, you can always try both to see what you prefer.

Related: 41 Ways to Make $100 a Day That Actually Work

How much should I pay a teenage tutor?

You should pay a teenage tutor the applicable standard rate based on the subject matter and the age of their student. Just because they are teenagers doesn’t mean you should pay less, especially if they were recommended to you as a good tutor in that subject.

Clearly, you won’t be paying a teenager as much as, say, someone with a college degree in that field or who’s a qualified teacher. But you also shouldn’t set out to undercut them as plenty of teenagers are excellent tutors who are worth their hourly rate.

In fact, they can be an asset when you consider that they probably learned the relevant information not that long ago. This means that they remember what worked for them to learn this – and they can then share that same strategy with their students.

Final thoughts on how much you should charge for tutoring

The question of how much to charge for tutoring is going to depend on a bunch of factors. While having a tutoring pricing calculator may help, it’s easy to be concerned that you’re setting your rate too low – or too high and that no one will hire you.

However, the best way to figure this out is to just start. You’ll probably be able to have a ballpark figure once you’ve done some research into the points mentioned above. From there, it’s simply a question of throwing yourself out there and seeing the response.

If you’re booked out or aren’t quite getting the kinds of clients you had in mind, perhaps you’ve set your tutoring prices too low.

Alternatively, if you’re barely building your client list at all, your rate could be too high and may be worth dropping a bit.

Don’t be worried though if you’re not sure whether you have the qualifications or background to back up the fact that you’re charging more than you initially expected. There’s almost always going to be someone out there willing to pay for a quality service.

And the fact that, in this case, your service can have a direct impact on their or their child’s academic future means that you may be able to earn more than you first realized.

If you grow up to be a professional writer, everything you write will first go through an editor before being published. This is because the process of writing is really a process of re-writing —of rethinking and reexamining your work, usually with the help of someone else. So what does this mean for your student writing? And in particular, what does it mean for very important, but nonprofessional writing like your college essay? Should you ask your parents to look at your essay? Pay for an essay service?

If you are wondering what kind of help you can, and should, get with your personal statement, you've come to the right place! In this article, I'll talk about what kind of writing help is useful, ethical, and even expected for your college admission essay . I'll also point out who would make a good editor, what the differences between editing and proofreading are, what to expect from a good editor, and how to spot and stay away from a bad one.

Who Can/Should Help You?

Advice for editors.

Should You Pay Money For Essay Editing?

The Bottom Line

What's next, what kind of help with your essay can you get.

Rather than talking in general terms about "help," let's first clarify the two different ways that someone else can improve your writing . There is editing, which is the more intensive kind of assistance that you can use throughout the whole process. And then there's proofreading, which is the last step of really polishing your final product.

Let me go into some more detail about editing and proofreading, and then explain how good editors and proofreaders can help you."

Editing is helping the author (in this case, you) go from a rough draft to a finished work . Editing is the process of asking questions about what you're saying, how you're saying it, and how you're organizing your ideas. But not all editing is good editing . In fact, it's very easy for an editor to cross the line from supportive to overbearing and over-involved.

Ability to clarify assignments. A good editor is usually a good writer, and certainly has to be a good reader. For example, in this case, a good editor should make sure you understand the actual essay prompt you're supposed to be answering.

Open-endedness. Good editing is all about asking questions about your ideas and work, but without providing answers. It's about letting you stick to your story and message, and doesn't alter your point of view.

body_landscape.jpg

Think of an editor as a great travel guide. It can show you the many different places your trip could take you. It should explain any parts of the trip that could derail your trip or confuse the traveler. But it never dictates your path, never forces you to go somewhere you don't want to go, and never ignores your interests so that the trip no longer seems like it's your own. So what should good editors do?

Help Brainstorm Topics

Sometimes it's easier to bounce thoughts off of someone else. This doesn't mean that your editor gets to come up with ideas, but they can certainly respond to the various topic options you've come up with. This way, you're less likely to write about the most boring of your ideas, or to write about something that isn't actually important to you.

If you're wondering how to come up with options for your editor to consider, check out our guide to brainstorming topics for your college essay .

Help Revise Your Drafts

Here, your editor can't upset the delicate balance of not intervening too much or too little. It's tricky, but a great way to think about it is to remember: editing is about asking questions, not giving answers .

Revision questions should point out:

  • Places where more detail or more description would help the reader connect with your essay
  • Places where structure and logic don't flow, losing the reader's attention
  • Places where there aren't transitions between paragraphs, confusing the reader
  • Moments where your narrative or the arguments you're making are unclear

But pointing to potential problems is not the same as actually rewriting—editors let authors fix the problems themselves.

Craft Your Perfect College Essay

Bad editing is usually very heavy-handed editing. Instead of helping you find your best voice and ideas, a bad editor changes your writing into their own vision.

You may be dealing with a bad editor if they:

  • Add material (examples, descriptions) that doesn't come from you
  • Use a thesaurus to make your college essay sound "more mature"
  • Add meaning or insight to the essay that doesn't come from you
  • Tell you what to say and how to say it
  • Write sentences, phrases, and paragraphs for you
  • Change your voice in the essay so it no longer sounds like it was written by a teenager

Colleges can tell the difference between a 17-year-old's writing and a 50-year-old's writing. Not only that, they have access to your SAT or ACT Writing section, so they can compare your essay to something else you wrote. Writing that's a little more polished is great and expected. But a totally different voice and style will raise questions.

Where's the Line Between Helpful Editing and Unethical Over-Editing?

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether your college essay editor is doing the right thing. Here are some guidelines for staying on the ethical side of the line.

  • An editor should say that the opening paragraph is kind of boring, and explain what exactly is making it drag. But it's overstepping for an editor to tell you exactly how to change it.
  • An editor should point out where your prose is unclear or vague. But it's completely inappropriate for the editor to rewrite that section of your essay.
  • An editor should let you know that a section is light on detail or description. But giving you similes and metaphors to beef up that description is a no-go.

body_ideas.jpg

Proofreading (also called copy-editing) is checking for errors in the last draft of a written work. It happens at the end of the process and is meant as the final polishing touch. Proofreading is meticulous and detail-oriented, focusing on small corrections. It sands off all the surface rough spots that could alienate the reader.

Because proofreading is usually concerned with making fixes on the word or sentence level, this is the only process where someone else can actually add to or take away things from your essay . This is because what they are adding or taking away tends to be one or two misplaced letters.

Laser focus. Proofreading is all about the tiny details, so the ability to really concentrate on finding small slip-ups is a must.

Excellent grammar and spelling skills. Proofreaders need to dot every "i" and cross every "t." Good proofreaders should correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. They should put foreign words in italics and surround quotations with quotation marks. They should check that you used the correct college's name, and that you adhered to any formatting requirements (name and date at the top of the page, uniform font and size, uniform spacing).

Limited interference. A proofreader needs to make sure that you followed any word limits. But if cuts need to be made to shorten the essay, that's your job and not the proofreader's.

body_detective-2.jpg

A bad proofreader either tries to turn into an editor, or just lacks the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job.

Some signs that you're working with a bad proofreader are:

  • If they suggest making major changes to the final draft of your essay. Proofreading happens when editing is already finished.
  • If they aren't particularly good at spelling, or don't know grammar, or aren't detail-oriented enough to find someone else's small mistakes.
  • If they start swapping out your words for fancier-sounding synonyms, or changing the voice and sound of your essay in other ways. A proofreader is there to check for errors, not to take the 17-year-old out of your writing.

body_spill-1.jpg

What Do Colleges Think of Your Getting Help With Your Essay?

Admissions officers agree: light editing and proofreading are good—even required ! But they also want to make sure you're the one doing the work on your essay. They want essays with stories, voice, and themes that come from you. They want to see work that reflects your actual writing ability, and that focuses on what you find important.

On the Importance of Editing

Get feedback. Have a fresh pair of eyes give you some feedback. Don't allow someone else to rewrite your essay, but do take advantage of others' edits and opinions when they seem helpful. ( Bates College )

Read your essay aloud to someone. Reading the essay out loud offers a chance to hear how your essay sounds outside your head. This exercise reveals flaws in the essay's flow, highlights grammatical errors and helps you ensure that you are communicating the exact message you intended. ( Dickinson College )

On the Value of Proofreading

Share your essays with at least one or two people who know you well—such as a parent, teacher, counselor, or friend—and ask for feedback. Remember that you ultimately have control over your essays, and your essays should retain your own voice, but others may be able to catch mistakes that you missed and help suggest areas to cut if you are over the word limit. ( Yale University )

Proofread and then ask someone else to proofread for you. Although we want substance, we also want to be able to see that you can write a paper for our professors and avoid careless mistakes that would drive them crazy. ( Oberlin College )

On Watching Out for Too Much Outside Influence

Limit the number of people who review your essay. Too much input usually means your voice is lost in the writing style. ( Carleton College )

Ask for input (but not too much). Your parents, friends, guidance counselors, coaches, and teachers are great people to bounce ideas off of for your essay. They know how unique and spectacular you are, and they can help you decide how to articulate it. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, we're probably going to notice. ( Vanderbilt University )

body_thumbsup-3.jpg

Now let's talk about some potential people to approach for your college essay editing and proofreading needs. It's best to start close to home and slowly expand outward. Not only are your family and friends more invested in your success than strangers, but they also have a better handle on your interests and personality. This knowledge is key for judging whether your essay is expressing your true self.

Parents or Close Relatives

Your family may be full of potentially excellent editors! Parents are deeply committed to your well-being, and family members know you and your life well enough to offer details or incidents that can be included in your essay. On the other hand, the rewriting process necessarily involves criticism, which is sometimes hard to hear from someone very close to you.

A parent or close family member is a great choice for an editor if you can answer "yes" to the following questions. Is your parent or close relative a good writer or reader? Do you have a relationship where editing your essay won't create conflict? Are you able to constructively listen to criticism and suggestion from the parent?

One suggestion for defusing face-to-face discussions is to try working on the essay over email. Send your parent a draft, have them write you back some comments, and then you can pick which of their suggestions you want to use and which to discard.

Teachers or Tutors

A humanities teacher that you have a good relationship with is a great choice. I am purposefully saying humanities, and not just English, because teachers of Philosophy, History, Anthropology, and any other classes where you do a lot of writing, are all used to reviewing student work.

Moreover, any teacher or tutor that has been working with you for some time, knows you very well and can vet the essay to make sure it "sounds like you."

If your teacher or tutor has some experience with what college essays are supposed to be like, ask them to be your editor. If not, then ask whether they have time to proofread your final draft.

Guidance or College Counselor at Your School

The best thing about asking your counselor to edit your work is that this is their job. This means that they have a very good sense of what colleges are looking for in an application essay.

At the same time, school counselors tend to have relationships with admissions officers in many colleges, which again gives them insight into what works and which college is focused on what aspect of the application.

Unfortunately, in many schools the guidance counselor tends to be way overextended. If your ratio is 300 students to 1 college counselor, you're unlikely to get that person's undivided attention and focus. It is still useful to ask them for general advice about your potential topics, but don't expect them to be able to stay with your essay from first draft to final version.

Friends, Siblings, or Classmates

Although they most likely don't have much experience with what colleges are hoping to see, your peers are excellent sources for checking that your essay is you .

Friends and siblings are perfect for the read-aloud edit. Read your essay to them so they can listen for words and phrases that are stilted, pompous, or phrases that just don't sound like you.

You can even trade essays and give helpful advice on each other's work.

If your editor hasn't worked with college admissions essays very much, no worries! Any astute and attentive reader can still greatly help with your process. But, as in all things, beginners do better with some preparation.

First, your editor should read our advice about how to write a college essay introduction , how to spot and fix a bad college essay , and get a sense of what other students have written by going through some admissions essays that worked .

Then, as they read your essay, they can work through the following series of questions that will help them to guide you.

Introduction Questions

  • Is the first sentence a killer opening line? Why or why not?
  • Does the introduction hook the reader? Does it have a colorful, detailed, and interesting narrative? Or does it propose a compelling or surprising idea?
  • Can you feel the author's voice in the introduction, or is the tone dry, dull, or overly formal? Show the places where the voice comes through.

Essay Body Questions

  • Does the essay have a through-line? Is it built around a central argument, thought, idea, or focus? Can you put this idea into your own words?
  • How is the essay organized? By logical progression? Chronologically? Do you feel order when you read it, or are there moments where you are confused or lose the thread of the essay?
  • Does the essay have both narratives about the author's life and explanations and insight into what these stories reveal about the author's character, personality, goals, or dreams? If not, which is missing?
  • Does the essay flow? Are there smooth transitions/clever links between paragraphs? Between the narrative and moments of insight?

Reader Response Questions

  • Does the writer's personality come through? Do we know what the speaker cares about? Do we get a sense of "who he or she is"?
  • Where did you feel most connected to the essay? Which parts of the essay gave you a "you are there" sensation by invoking your senses? What moments could you picture in your head well?
  • Where are the details and examples vague and not specific enough?
  • Did you get an "a-ha!" feeling anywhere in the essay? Is there a moment of insight that connected all the dots for you? Is there a good reveal or "twist" anywhere in the essay?
  • What are the strengths of this essay? What needs the most improvement?

Should You Pay Money for Essay Editing?

One alternative to asking someone you know to help you with your college essay is the paid editor route. There are two different ways to pay for essay help: a private essay coach or a less personal editing service , like the many proliferating on the internet.

My advice is to think of these options as a last resort rather than your go-to first choice. I'll first go through the reasons why. Then, if you do decide to go with a paid editor, I'll help you decide between a coach and a service.

When to Consider a Paid Editor

In general, I think hiring someone to work on your essay makes a lot of sense if none of the people I discussed above are a possibility for you.

If you can't ask your parents. For example, if your parents aren't good writers, or if English isn't their first language. Or if you think getting your parents to help is going create unnecessary extra conflict in your relationship with them (applying to college is stressful as it is!)

If you can't ask your teacher or tutor. Maybe you don't have a trusted teacher or tutor that has time to look over your essay with focus. Or, for instance, your favorite humanities teacher has very limited experience with college essays and so won't know what admissions officers want to see.

If you can't ask your guidance counselor. This could be because your guidance counselor is way overwhelmed with other students.

If you can't share your essay with those who know you. It might be that your essay is on a very personal topic that you're unwilling to share with parents, teachers, or peers. Just make sure it doesn't fall into one of the bad-idea topics in our article on bad college essays .

If the cost isn't a consideration. Many of these services are quite expensive, and private coaches even more so. If you have finite resources, I'd say that hiring an SAT or ACT tutor (whether it's PrepScholar or someone else) is better way to spend your money . This is because there's no guarantee that a slightly better essay will sufficiently elevate the rest of your application, but a significantly higher SAT score will definitely raise your applicant profile much more.

Should You Hire an Essay Coach?

On the plus side, essay coaches have read dozens or even hundreds of college essays, so they have experience with the format. Also, because you'll be working closely with a specific person, it's more personal than sending your essay to a service, which will know even less about you.

But, on the minus side, you'll still be bouncing ideas off of someone who doesn't know that much about you . In general, if you can adequately get the help from someone you know, there is no advantage to paying someone to help you.

If you do decide to hire a coach, ask your school counselor, or older students that have used the service for recommendations. If you can't afford the coach's fees, ask whether they can work on a sliding scale —many do. And finally, beware those who guarantee admission to your school of choice—essay coaches don't have any special magic that can back up those promises.

Should You Send Your Essay to a Service?

On the plus side, essay editing services provide a similar product to essay coaches, and they cost significantly less . If you have some assurance that you'll be working with a good editor, the lack of face-to-face interaction won't prevent great results.

On the minus side, however, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of the service before working with them . If they are churning through many application essays without getting to know the students they are helping, you could end up with an over-edited essay that sounds just like everyone else's. In the worst case scenario, an unscrupulous service could send you back a plagiarized essay.

Getting recommendations from friends or a school counselor for reputable services is key to avoiding heavy-handed editing that writes essays for you or does too much to change your essay. Including a badly-edited essay like this in your application could cause problems if there are inconsistencies. For example, in interviews it might be clear you didn't write the essay, or the skill of the essay might not be reflected in your schoolwork and test scores.

Should You Buy an Essay Written by Someone Else?

Let me elaborate. There are super sketchy places on the internet where you can simply buy a pre-written essay. Don't do this!

For one thing, you'll be lying on an official, signed document. All college applications make you sign a statement saying something like this:

I certify that all information submitted in the admission process—including the application, the personal essay, any supplements, and any other supporting materials—is my own work, factually true, and honestly presented... I understand that I may be subject to a range of possible disciplinary actions, including admission revocation, expulsion, or revocation of course credit, grades, and degree, should the information I have certified be false. (From the Common Application )

For another thing, if your academic record doesn't match the essay's quality, the admissions officer will start thinking your whole application is riddled with lies.

Admission officers have full access to your writing portion of the SAT or ACT so that they can compare work that was done in proctored conditions with that done at home. They can tell if these were written by different people. Not only that, but there are now a number of search engines that faculty and admission officers can use to see if an essay contains strings of words that have appeared in other essays—you have no guarantee that the essay you bought wasn't also bought by 50 other students.

body_monalisa.jpg

  • You should get college essay help with both editing and proofreading
  • A good editor will ask questions about your idea, logic, and structure, and will point out places where clarity is needed
  • A good editor will absolutely not answer these questions, give you their own ideas, or write the essay or parts of the essay for you
  • A good proofreader will find typos and check your formatting
  • All of them agree that getting light editing and proofreading is necessary
  • Parents, teachers, guidance or college counselor, and peers or siblings
  • If you can't ask any of those, you can pay for college essay help, but watch out for services or coaches who over-edit you work
  • Don't buy a pre-written essay! Colleges can tell, and it'll make your whole application sound false.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do college application essays still matter.

When reviewing college applications, admissions officers see a lot of statistics—test scores, GPA, class rank, etc. Admissions officers can infer a lot of things about you from these items, but these stats don’t effectively show who you are as a person. For this reason, essays are an important component of your application. Compelling essays showcase your writing skills, creativity, and reveal things about you that may show admissions staff that you’re a good fit for a specific college.

Who can help me with writing my essay?

A college essay tutor or editor can help students build a compelling essay that aligns with their college admissions goals. At KD, our college counseling team helps in a variety of ways: brainstorming topics, finding their voice, shaping a story, correcting grammar and spelling mistakes, rewriting for other colleges, and much more.

How many words does my essay need to be?

Word count for personal statements and supplemental essays can vary from college to college. However, several U.S. colleges will accept the Common App®, which recommends 400-600 words for the personal statement (sometimes called the general college application essay). Supplemental essays are typically shorter but can vary by college. When applying, follow directions as closely as possible for each application to maximize your admissions odds.

What format do college application essays use?

Your college application essays will not follow the same formal structure that is expected with high school research papers or persuasive essays. In other words, you won’t need to come up with a thesis and support it with evidence. Instead, personal statements typically tell a story in a creative way. Students don’t often encounter this type of creative writing with their high school assignments, which is why many students find it quite challenging.

KD’s college counseling team is well-versed in teaching students how to craft compelling college admissions essays, and we’ve helped hundreds of students use the essays to strengthen their applications.

What do I write in a personal statement?

A student’s personal statement should tell a story that only he or she can tell. In other words, it needs to reveal something unique about the student’s experience that connects to the chosen essay prompt. With that being said, it’s typically a challenge to do this in a unique way, and there are certain topics that students should avoid.

Read more about choosing a college essay topic , and if you need additional help, consider signing up for a college counseling program .

How do I make my essay stand out?

Our advice is don’t play it safe. Be real. Be yourself. Finding your own unique voice and using that to tell a story about yourself is typically the best move when it comes to writing a good personal statement. Of course, that is easier said than done. Working with a college essay tutor can help guide you in the right direction. Most admissions essays sound like thousands of other admissions essays, and our experienced college counseling team staff can tell you which topics are generic and which align best with your application.

For more advice, read about these steps for how to write a powerful college essay .

How much do college essay consultants charge?

The cost of working with a college essay consultant or editor varies depending on a student’s needs. Families can choose to pay by the hour for one-on-one help or purchase a program that guides students through the entire college application process. For a more accurate description of pricing, explore KD’s college counseling program options or sign up for a free consultation to discuss specific needs with a member of our college counseling team.

When should I start writing my college essays?

Many students start working on their application essays during summer or fall of senior year, but some students begin as early as spring semester of 11th grade. However, there are many factors that may prevent a student from starting at that time, such as extracurricular involvement, a challenging course load, admissions testing, etc. But remember, college applications are time-consuming, and it takes a lot of work to build one that stands out.

To find out when is the best time to start, families can schedule a free consultation to discuss individual admissions goals with our team.

Best SAT Online Tutoring in 2022

#1 – prepmaven.

Our Verdict — Best SAT Tutoring Overall Price: $79–349/hour It’s hard to beat PrepMaven for SAT tutoring! PrepMaven has assembled an impressive team of Ivy-League tutors to provide one-on-one SAT tutoring. Most tutors are Princeton graduates with extensive teaching experience. Founded by two brothers, both Princeton graduates passionate about education, PrepMaven offers more individualized learning experiences than bigger test prep companies. Tutors undergo a thorough training process that allows them to effectively teach students how to take advantage of the standardized nature of the test. With a range of price points depending on tutor qualifications, families are able to find the right fit for their budget. Starting at $79/hour, families can work with current students at the most elite universities in the country. PrepMaven’s Master level provides one-on-one tutoring with Ivy-League graduates who have extensive teaching and test prep experience at just $149/hour — a lower price than other tutoring services, for more elite instructors. It’s also possible to work one-on-one with the very best tutors at $349/hr, and there is the opportunity to work directly with the founders of the company. Recommended by US News , PrepMaven also provides free resources for the SAT and regularly shares insights garnered from connections with former admissions officers.

What we like:

  • Experienced Ivy-League tutors , selected for their passion for education and working with students
  • Competitive pricing — rates are lower than other options for highly qualified tutors
  • Impressive client reviews — hundreds of 5-star reviews on Google and other independent review platforms
  • More individualized learning experience compared to large companies

Northwestern University

#2 – Princeton Review

Our Verdict — Best of the Big Test Prep Companies Price: $167–190/hour The Princeton Review actually has no connection to Princeton University. However, they’re still well-known in their own right as a large educational company, as well as the publishers of many test prep and college admissions guides. Tutors with the Princeton Review receive extensive training. They are not required to be Ivy-League graduates or have scored highly themselves on standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, or GRE.

  • Princeton Review is a good option for families who want to work with one of the largest test prep companies.
  • Cost: $167–190/hour
  • Tutor qualifications: trained instructors; no specific requirements for high SAT scores or top school
  • Large, established test prep company

What we don’t like:

  • No specific qualification requirements for tutors —although tutors have more extensive training than some other companies

Duke University

#3 – Wyzant

Our Verdict — Alternative for Families on a Budget Price: $20–600/hour There are plenty of large platforms with large stables of part-time tutors and coaches available to work with students. Wyzant is one of the largest such platforms, with more than 65,000 tutors providing services through their website. Students and families can pick individual tutors to work with from their roster and arrange tutoring services directly. One benefit of this model is that tutors can set their own rates, which vary hugely. Families on a budget can find online SAT tutors as low as $20 per hour. However, these tutors might not have any experience or training, and they may not have scored highly on the SAT themselves or graduated from a top school. Tutors with more qualifications may have much higher rates, as high as $600 per hour!

  • Wyzant is a good option for families on a budget who are willing to find their own tutor and take a gamble on quality
  • Cost: $20–600/hour
  • Tutor qualifications: varies
  • Marketplace platform means that some tutors list low rates for tutoring, which can make tutoring more affordable
  • Families can choose their own tutor directly
  • No training for tutors —which leads to uneven quality of instruction
  • Families are hiring individual tutors, which means tutor qualifications vary enormously , and there are no guarantees

#4 – Khan Academy

Our Verdict — Honorable Mention for Free Self-Guided SAT Prep Price: $0 Khan Academy technically doesn’t belong on this list, since they don’t offer any live SAT tutoring. However, it’s such a fantastic resource that we’d be remiss not to mention it. It’s hard to beat completely free, officially-approved SAT prep! For motivated and organized students ready to work independently, Khan Academy has amazing content. A non-profit educational organization, Khan Academy has partnered with the College Board (the makers of the SAT) to provide free test prep that’s accessible to everyone. That means that apart from the official practice tests, Khan Academy’s materials are the only other materials officially approved by the College Board. (Many companies will produce their own “practice tests” that mimic the test but are not official tests. All of the official tests are available for free online from the College Board or in the College Board SAT book.) Students create a profile with a SAT Dashboard that guides them through video lessons, quizzes, practice questions with detailed explanations, and full-length practice tests. Of course, this resource is quite limited as there’s no tutor or instructor to guide students, craft learning plans, and answer questions.

  • Khan Academy’s SAT prep platform is the best option for anyone who wants to prep independently with just the test content, no strategy tips.
  • Tutor qualifications: no instructor, but the materials are approved by the College Board
  • Partnership with the College Board (makers of the SAT) means that materials are officially approved
  • Individual math concepts have particularly strong content , great for reviewing with short videos and then doing practice with instant feedback
  • Covers only test content, no strategy —and learning the test format and key strategies is an important component of test prep
  • Content is weaker for Reading and Writing sections , especially compared to their content for the Math sections
  • Self-guided platform means that students have to craft their own study plan and decide which areas to practice—and there’s no one to hold them accountable

SAT Tutoring Alternatives (that Didn’t Make the Cut)

#5 – kaplan.

Our Verdict — Big Test Prep with High Minimum Prices Price: $115–200/hour, $1999 minimum package Along with Princeton Review, Kaplan is one of the other large companies in the test prep space. Because of their size, their tutoring sessions have more of a corporate vibe. They offer four tutoring packages of different sizes. Their minimum purchase is a package of 10 tutoring hours at $1999. This comes out to $200/hour for tutoring, which is a very steep price—especially considering that their tutors have no required qualifications like high scores themselves or degrees from top schools! Their hourly rate does decrease if one purchases a large tutoring package, but their tutor qualifications remain less rigorous than other options.

  • Cost: $1999 for 10 tutoring hours, $2899 for 20 tutoring hours, $3799 for 30 tutoring hours, or $4599 for 40 tutoring hours
  • Tutor qualifications: no specific qualifications
  • Tutors have no required qualifications
  • You don’t know who the tutor will be
  • High minimum purchase of $1999 for 10 hours of tutoring

#6 – Prep Expert

Our Verdict — Budget Rates with Inexperienced Tutors Price: $69–89/hour Better known for their SAT prep group courses, Prep Expert also offers individual tutoring. Their tutors are all top 1% scorers on the SAT themselves, which is a good background. However, the tutors may be inexperienced at tutoring and don’t benefit from training, so the quality of teaching may be uneven.

  • Cost: $69–89/hour; $356 for 4 hours ($89/hour), $632 for 8 hours ($79/hour), or $1104for 16 hours ($69/hour)
  • Tutor qualifications: top 1% scorers
  • SAT tutors are top 1% scorers
  • Refund process is difficult and families have reported that the score increase guarantee may not be honored
  • Tutors don’t have training

#7 – PrepScholar

Our Verdict: Overpriced Tutoring with Limited Guarantee Price: $130–249/hour, minimum $995 package PrepScholar is another larger tutoring company that offers tutoring with top scorers. A major promise that they make is their score increase guarantee of 160 points on the SAT after finishing their program. However, we found this promise a bit misleading—students who don’t manage to achieve the advertised score increase can claim a refund for only the value of their pre-recorded prep videos, which is $397. They can also request continued tutoring for the same number of hours that they originally purchased without additional cost. They can’t request a refund for the majoring of the tutoring cost! We also noted that PrepScholar’s advertised hourly rate (of $50 per hour) is a bit disingenuous, since it relies on including the independent homework done by the student. Of course, any tutoring service can tutor for four hours at $250/hour, assign the student to practice and watch videos for 16 hours, and then claim that the hourly rate is $50/hour…but that hardly seems fair to clients.

  • Cost: $130–249/hour; $995 for “monitored prep” with 4 hours of tutoring ($249/hr), $1995 for 12 hours of tutoring ($166/hr), $2995 for 20 hours ($150/hr), or $6995 for 54 hours ($130/hr)
  • Tutors are top 1% scorers
  • Tutoring includes their “Automated Prep program”
  • More expensive than other options for comparable quality
  • No tutor bios or information about qualifications beyond high SAT scores
  • Disingenuous advertising that includes homework hours to calculate the hourly rate

#8 – Tutoring Service of New York

Our Verdict — New Service with Higher Minimum Package Price: $112–160/hour ($1200 5-session minimum) Founded by a former tutor with the now-defunct Ivy Global tutoring service, the Tutoring Service of New York offers test prep and subject-area tutoring online. Most of their tutors are current graduate students, particularly at Columbia University and NYU. At $1200, their minimum package for SAT tutoring is on the higher side.

  • Cost: $1200 for five 90-minute sessions; $2000 for 10 sessions; $2700 for 16 sessions
  • Tutor qualifications: college graduates, mostly current graduate students at Columbia or NYU
  • Qualified tutors , some with Ivy-League backgrounds
  • New service , so client reviews are still limited
  • Higher minimum tutoring packages

#9 – StudyPoint

Our Verdict — Corporate Vibe with High Minimum Purchase Price: $??/hour StudyPoint is an older company with more of a corporate feel. They do not have any specific qualifications for their tutors, like scoring highly on the SAT themselves or graduating from an elite university. Their main claim is their “guarantee.” This is only available for students who complete at least 30 tutoring hours with their program, which is a lot of tutoring! If students don’t improve their SAT scores after completing their Comprehensive Program, they offer 18 additional tutoring hours ( not your money back).

  • Cost:  $??/hour; Intensive Program with 60 tutoring hours, Comprehensive Program with 30 tutoring hours, Review Program with 18 tutoring hours (no score increase guarantee)
  • Additional 18 hours of tutoring if students complete at least 30 tutoring hours and don’t improve by 140 points on the SAT (guarantee raises to 220 points if students complete 60 tutoring hours)
  • High minimum purchase
  • No specific tutor qualifications
  • Limited score increase guarantee
  • Secretive about pricing — clients need to call to receive pricing information, which is not available online or via email

#10 – SoFlo Tutors

Our Verdict — Young Service Featuring Memes Price: $60–90/hour Founded by a 24-year-old in Southern Florida (hence their name), SoFlo is a newer company with a young team. Their tutors are top 1% scorers themselves and are current college students or recent graduates. We would have loved to see the bios of more of their tutors — they only provide six tutor bios on their website, and a few more in their brochure. Their website has a younger feel, with a section devoted to SAT memes.

  • Cost: $60–90/hour; $90/hour for pay-as-you-go, $1500 for 20 hours ($75/hour), or $2400 for 40 hours ($60/hour)
  • Tutor qualifications:  top 1% scorers from top schools
  • SAT tutors are top 1% scorers and from top schools
  • Reasonable pricing
  • New company with young leadership , with less experience
  • No specific option to work with more experienced tutors who have graduated college

#11 – Parker Academics

Our Verdict — Higher Rates for Outdated SAT Tutoring  Price: $ 200/hour Based in New York City, Parker Academics is a high-end tutoring service offering online SAT test prep. Like PrepMaven and Elite Ivy Tutors , their tutors are graduates of Ivy-League institutions, but their fees are higher. We noted that their materials online for the SAT are outdated, and appear as if they were created shortly after the last significant change to the SAT in 2016. However, the SAT no longer includes an Essay, and the test is about to undergo a major change in 2024, so it’s especially important to work with a SAT tutoring service that’s aware of the latest updates to the test.

  • Cost: $200/hour
  • Tutor qualifications:  Ivy-League graduates
  • SAT tutors are Ivy grads
  • Website is not up-to-date

#12 – LA Tutors

Our Verdict — Higher Rates for Less-Qualified Tutors Price: $160–220/hour Based in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City, LA Tutors is a larger tutoring company. They offer limited “guaranteed results” for students who complete all tutoring sessions and homework, and take the SAT within a certain specified timeframe. Their prices are on the higher side, but their tutors are not necessarily top scorers on the SAT themselves or graduates of elite universities.

  • Cost: $145–185/hour
  • Tutor qualifications: college graduates
  • Good insights on their blog about college admissions and testing
  • Tutors are mostly not from Ivy-Plus schools — tutors are primarily college graduates but not from the most elite institutions
  • Fees are high given the credentials of the tutors

#13 – Elite Ivy Tutors

Our Verdict — Pricey Service with Long Sessions Price: $200–300/hour Elite Ivy Tutors (EIT) is a small team offering tutoring from Ivy-League graduates. However, they do not publish crucial information about pricing and tutoring logistics, and we found them to be slow to respond to client emails. Unique among the tutoring services we researched, EIT schedules sessions that are two or three hours long, rather than sixty or ninety minutes long. This length of time can be challenging for students.

  • Cost: $200/hour, or $300/hour to work directly with the company founder
  • Tutor qualifications: Ivy-League graduates
  • Website is confusing and lacks information
  • Long tutoring sessions of two or three hours at a time can be challenging for students
  • Higher prices than other tutoring services also offering the chance to work with Ivy-League grads

#14 – Summit Prep

Our Verdict — Less-qualified Tutors Price: $ 130–155/hour Summit Prep is a tutoring and admissions counseling company located in New Jersey. The majority of their tutors are not graduates of elite institutions, yet their fees are higher than services with comparable instructors.

  • Cost: $155/hour (reduced to $130/hour with 50-hour package)
  • Tutor qualifications:  mostly college graduates
  • SAT tutors are full-time instructors with more extensive training
  • Majority of tutors are not from Ivy-Plus schools — tutors are primarily college graduates but the majority of them are not from elite institutions

#15 – Varsity Tutors

Our Verdict — Uneven Quality Without Budget Pricing  Price: $75–95/hour A bit like Uber for tutoring, Varsity Tutors is an enormous tutoring platform offering online instruction in all academic subjects and test prep, including SAT prep. However, its size has many downsides — most notably, very uneven quality of teaching. Tutors can be very quickly approved and are paid lower rates than nearly any other tutoring company (just $15 for sessions that cost families $95), so it’s difficult for them to attract and retain good talent. Varsity Tutors also does not provide any tutor materials, curriculum, or training, so it’s up to individual tutors to create everything from scratch, contributing further to the unevenness of quality. For families on a budget, we’d suggest the Standard Tutor option at PrepMaven (Ivy-League students starting at $79/hour), Prep Expert ($59–89/hour), or SoFlo Tutors (current students at $60–90/hour). If those options still don’t fit the budget, we’d recommend looking for an independent tutor on Wyzant (quality varies but you might find a decent tutor under $40/hour).

  • Cost: $75–95/hour
  • Tutor qualifications:  high school graduates
  • Large number of tutors , so certain to find a tutor to fit your schedule
  • Uneven teaching quality due to lack of resources for instruction
  • No education or training requirements for tutors , along with low pay rates for instructors, means tutors are less-qualified than alternative SAT tutoring services

What is the SAT?

Each year, roughly 2 million high school students take the SAT.*

Along with the ACT , the SAT is a key component of college admissions. Colleges use test scores to gauge a student’s college readiness.

(Many schools have instituted a temporary test-optional policy as a response to Covid. However, based on the available data, students at competitive schools are still submitting test scores.)

In addition to college admission, test scores can be used to earn scholarships or placement in special programs. Many schools that are test-optional are still using test scores for scholarships, so good scores can be an important way of avoiding student debt.

Younger students can also use test scores for admission to gifted and talented programs .

For students whose grades may have slipped during high school, test scores can also be used to show admissions officers your potential.

Finally, test scores are a handy tool for students to figure out where they might be a competitive applicant. Wondering if you have a chance at getting into Harvard? Not sure if University of Illinois is a reach school or a safety school for you? Test scores can help you there .

Check out our other posts for more information about how the SAT is scored, when to take the SAT, and how the SAT is different from the SAT. We also have many free test prep resources . For more test prep guidance, schedule a call with Jessica or one of our founders today!

* 2.2 million students of the class of 2020 took the SAT, a record high. Due to Covid, this number dipped to 1.5 million for the class of 2021. (source: College Board )

Why work with a private SAT tutor?

You may want to consider working with an SAT tutor if:

  • You have no idea where to start in order to prepare for the SAT
  • You feel overwhelmed by all of the different SAT prep books and materials and don’t know which to choose
  • You have a hard time keeping yourself on track and want an external structure to hold you accountable
  • You’re not sure how to track your progress
  • You’ve been practicing on your own but your gains have plateaued
  • You have a limited amount of time and need to be efficient in your studying
  • You want to learn techniques for managing test anxiety
  • You want insider tips about test strategies
  • You want more individualized attention than you’d get in a prep class with other students
  • You want to learn efficiently, with each lesson tailored to your exact needs
  • You’re a high scorer who would be bored in a general prep class
  • You’re a lower scorer who would benefit from more focused help
  • You have specific gaps in your knowledge (e.g. missed a few months of geometry due to Covid, an injury, a family move, etc.) and need a tutor to teach this material

With our SAT students , we typically see students increase their scores by about 100–300 points after working with a tutor. This can have a significant impact on college admissions.

What makes a good SAT tutor?

Like with any other test, it’s possible to improve your performance on the SAT with the right practice and preparation.

However, specific preparation for the SAT is usually not taught in schools , so students and families are on their own preparing for it.

Guidance with SAT prep comes in two main forms: group classes or individual tutoring . Many students combine the two, following an SAT group class with some one-on-one tutoring to focus on a tailored approach for that student’s strengths and weaknesses.

In this post, though, we focused on SAT individual tutoring .

These days, many tutoring sessions are online . This allows students to seek out the best tutor regardless of their physical location, which is great!

The most important aspect of a good SAT tutoring experience is the teacher. Tutoring sessions should be taught by experienced instructors who know the test inside and out and have helped many other students. The instructors should be people who scored highly on the test themselves, ideally in the top 1% .

Classes should begin with a diagnostic test and a detailed score report to analyze a student’s starting point.

An SAT tutor can introduce the test format and de-mystify the test for students and families. A good tutor will make sure that students are using the best available resources for studying and practice.

Especially since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic , many students have had interruptions in their education, resulting in knowledge gaps that can cause difficulties on the SAT and for years to come.

A perceptive tutor will find these gaps and help to fill them by teaching whatever material a student needs. Working one-on-one is unparalleled in its efficacy for remedying these interruptions in a student’s learning, since a tutor can notice these gaps much more easily than a teacher with a classroom full of students.

Whatever students are struggling with, a good tutor will spot those skill gaps and teach that material in an encouraging way.

Princeton University

Managing test preparation and studying can also be stressful for family dynamics . Working with a tutor means that parents don’t have to be involved directly — the tutor can be the one to assign homework , establish holistic studying schedules , and track progress .

A good SAT tutor takes a lot of the stress out of the SAT process and makes sure students are practicing effectively . Tutors can provide students with study materials and guide students in using them correctly .

Thorough SAT tutors can also help students to make a holistic study plan and keep them on track , so that parents don’t have to be involved directly.

Effective SAT tutors will assign structured homework so that students can practice constructively with official test questions . There are a very limited number of official practice tests, so it’s important to make the most of them!

Good SAT tutors will help students work through missed problems and answer students’ questions .

In addition, there are many strategies and tricks that can make the test easier. Unlike some self-directed courses and books, a good SAT tutor can share these tricks with students and guide them through implementing test strategies.

Finally, a great SAT tutor will be a cheerleader for the student. An experienced SAT tutor can help students to learn ways to manage test anxiety and learn key study strategies — both of which will be super valuable for the rest of their academic careers and beyond.

A great SAT tutor will encourage their students and leave them feeling confident and ready for the SAT !

Yale University

Best overall: PrepMaven’s one-on-one SAT tutoring is the best out there both in terms of tutor quality and price. Starting at just $79/hour, students can work with current undergraduates at Princeton, Harvard, and other Ivy-League universities to prepare for the SAT. Families can also work with experienced, professional educators and Ivy-League graduates at $149/hour. As a boutique tutoring service, PrepMaven offers careful attention to each student and boasts amazing customer reviews.

Best of the big companies: The Princeton Review (no connection to Princeton University) is one of the biggest and most well-known companies. Their tutoring is pricey, but a solid option. Instructors go through a more extensive training process than at many other competitors, but there’s no requirement for instructors to be graduates of top schools or high scorers themselves.

Best on a budget: For families on a tighter budget, we’d suggest looking for an independent tutor on Wyzant . It’s a tutoring marketplace platform, so the quality varies hugely and there’s no oversight or qualification requirements, but you might find a decent tutor under $40/hour.

However, in our experience a good tutor can accomplish more with a student in one hour than an average tutor can do in five hours . With that in mind, it might be more effective to combine free resources like Khan Academy and the free practice materials available from the College Board with a few hours of high-quality tutoring.

Best self-guided: For self-guided online SAT practice, it doesn’t get much better than Khan Academy . This online educational platform is completely free and is the only service to partner directly with the College Board, the makers of the SAT. For students with enough self-discipline to stick to a study schedule, Khan Academy can be a powerful tool. We don’t recommend paying for self-guided courses unless students have already exhausted the resources available for free from Khan Academy and the College Board .

It’s always best to start early and not wait until the last minute to prepare for the SAT! Remember that test scores can be used to earn scholarships as well as college admission, so a few months of study now can pay off with up to $300,000 in tuition saved later.

Students who achieve their goal score earlier on in high school can relax and not worry about testing at the end of their junior year (the most important year for grades, and when many students are focused on AP tests) or in the beginning of their senior year, when most students are working on college essays.

High-achieving students will also want to take the PSAT seriously, as it offers another opportunity to win big scholarship money through the National Merit program.

How much to charge tutoring - ivy league grad?

Hi parents. I have been asked to online tutor a high school upperclassman in college level writing/essay editing. I graduated from a HYP undergrad this year, and am wondering what would be a reasonable price to charge. What would you pay as a parent?

I have a lot of tutoring experience, but they are usually through volunteering or family so the prices are extremely variable and not set. Thanks - looking forward to your help!

(cross posted in careers/employment because I thought the question would be valid in both forums)

It’s largely a question of geography.

I’m on Long Island. I’ve been teaching for 30+ years. I charge between $75 and $100 per hours. In many other parts of the country I would get far less.

And, as a PS-- in your shoes, I would choose ONE-- Harvard OR Yale OR Princeton as the school from which I said I graduated.

Is this tutoring for the essays for college applications or just normal writing ability?

My D19(HS) is charging $25 per hour for ACT/SAT tutoring this Summer.

D19 also does private swim lessons at people’s homes. One client is paying $20 per half hour lesson. The client has two kids. We have been amazed at what people will pay for things like this. As I say it somewhat depends on the size of the house. The bigger the house the more you can charge. That is an old contractor saying.

Aside from geography, it would also depends on experience. Have you done this before, and have you had success? If it’s the first time, you would need to start on the lower end of the range. In all honesty, if I were hiring a tutor for my kid, I wouldn’t care much whether you graduated from Harvard or from Rutgers, or from a small comprehensive four year college in the Midwest. I would care A, what your major is, B, whether you can write, and C, whether you can teach.

Well, if you graduated from a top creative writing program, it would matter.

my son is currently at an ivy school and tutors students for 60$ an hour.

$50 an hour sounds about right.

I hope you are aware beforehand of ethical dilemmas that might arise. Years ago I was trained in “non-directive” tutoring in a university writing program. And with a college essay, if that is part of what you are working on, beware of interfering with the authenticity of what, for a lack of a better term, I will call the student’s “voice.”

My kid was charging $75 as a high school senior/college student for few years. The local certified teachers were charging $100+. She was tutoring on all subjects, and most of the time was just time management with those students. She started with one student because the mom really liked D1, and it worked out so well the mom recommended D1 to many of her friends.

Location, location, location. Even in my state of MA, the further away from Boston and the clusters of rich communities, the price goes diown. A tutor can get $60-70 an hour tutoring in Wayland, Weston. one would be lucky getting paid $30 an hour tutoring in Worcester.

Personally, I would start low and use this as practice once you do that see what the area will pay. There are many sites to hire tutors. Look at those in the zip code where you will be and see what the going rates are.

Don’t undercharge and don’t undervalue yourself. You are not a HS student or even a college student, you have a degree, you have tutoring experience, and an hour of tutoring takes more than an hour of your time and energy. My guess is $75.

I agree with sorghum. When my kid was tutoring. She would spend time to prep for one hour of tutoring. She was tutoring students from her high school, so she would even meet with teachers sometimes to go over the curriculum.

Around here $65/hour for an experienced tutor is fairly common, especially for high school level math or math SAT prep. Reading tutors at the elementary level, get about half that, however.

It’s all about location. Even the best tutors aren’t getting $75/hr where we live.

Don’t forget to build in your prep costs. You’re only getting paid for the hours you are tutoring, but there is a lot of prep that goes with it. My daughter is a French tutor/teacher, and she spends a lot of time creating and correcting assignments to prepare for her Skype sessions with her students. Her fees vary depending on yes, location, but also on how good her students are. When she was tutoring English, history and the SAT, she would occasionally jack up her fees if the student was unmotivated and the parents were just pushing the kid. It was a misery tax. She decided to focus solely on French because the clients tend to be more motivated, since it is an elective.

I think you need to look at costs in your area to set your price.

My opinion…that you graduated from an Ivy League school is terrific…congratulations. But that alone won’t be something most folks will pay more for. Your track record as a tutor is what will get you any additional pay over others doing this job well.

I think by stating he/she is a HYP graduate should mean something to a lot of paying parents, after that it will be OP’s track record. It’s a pretty good calling card.

@oldfort agree, it’s a foot in the door statement. But her track record will be what matters especially if she is charging top dollar.

Wonder if this poster has received some messages via his inbox.

OP, this question can’t be answered here. You need to find local rates for your area. Or contact some of the many companies that offer Skype tutoring.

Agree that experience trumps the name of the institution you graduated from.

Initially, i would charge less per hour but raise your hourly rate as you get more experience and a larger book of business. Word of mouth referrals are the best way to get more clients.

How Much Do English Tutors Cost?

how much do college essay tutors charge

Could you or your child benefit from having an English tutor ? A lot of people learn better when they have one-on-one attention and a personalized study schedule.

So, this is where an English tutor is going to come in. They can help to improve a student’s knowledge, as well as their confidence and self-esteem.

Personal tutoring sessions can be the difference between failing an examination and passing with flying colors .

But, one concern for a lot of parents and students is the cost of tutoring. Indeed, there are a lot of rumors going around that it is incredibly expensive and not affordable for everyone.

However, this is not always true. Let’s take a closer look at how much you can expect an English tutor to cost.

How Much are English Lessons with a Tutor?

Most English tutors are going to set their own lesson rates. This is going to be based on a variety of factors, such as their experience, the length of the lesson, and the level of English you want to study.

For instance, you may find that a highly qualified English tutor that offers 60-minute lessons is going to cost more than someone with no prior English qualifications and allows you to book 30-minute lessons.

We are going to give you a general idea of what you can expect when it comes to price. It can vary anywhere between £20 and £120. You will need to do your research to find an English tutor you trust.

Look for education platforms that provide verified and trusted English tutors at different levels.

Since a tutor is fully vetted beforehand, this can give you peace of mind. What’s more, it is going to allow you to select a price if you are on a budget.

Does this mean that the most expensive English tutors are going to help you the most with your grades?

No, this is not necessarily going to be true. There are a variety of elements that will affect your experience.

For instance, this includes the person’s teaching style and how they interact with you. It will also depend on how committed you are to learning and if you are able to understand the concepts you are studying.

So, the price of an English tutor is not always going to indicate their quality.

Therefore, be careful when you are looking at the price of an English tutor. Yes, this is going to be important when it comes to your budget.

But, if you have some flexibility, you want to choose your tutor based on more information.

Namely, their qualifications, teaching experience, and availability should come first. Then, you can take a look at their costs to make sure it is compatible with your budget.

Are There Ways to Keep the Cost of Tutoring Down?

If you are on a budget when it comes to finding an English tutor, do not worry. There are some ways that you can keep the price down and make it more affordable for your situation. You just have to be smart about it.

For example, one way you can lower the price of English tuition is to think about the lesson location. It often costs more for a tutor to come to your home. They have to travel there and they take a higher fee to filter this aspect into their schedule.

But, if that same person offers tuition online , it can be cheaper. After all, you are both interacting online. So, consider whether you are able to learn over the internet and this could save you money.

Another option you have is to consider the lesson length. If you feel like you only need a short lesson, it will be cheaper to see if that tutor offers 30-minute study sessions.

But, something to note is that if you need more time with your tutor, it can work out more cost-efficient to take longer lessons. For instance, some tutors will charge you less for a two-hour lesson than they would for two one-hour lessons on different days.

Therefore, the cost of an English tutor is going to be important. It can sometimes be an indication of someone’s experience, but it should be taken with a pinch of salt.

As long as you do your research, you are going to be able to find a good English tutor that you like and be able to keep the costs at a comfortable price.
