– I have celebrated many parties in my life. – But here I would like to talk about a birthday party, which I enjoyed a lot – It was the birthday of my younger brother. – It was his eighteenth birthday – I threw a surprise party for him. – My parents were also with me in this plan. – We invited a few of his close friends and some relatives. – After my brother left for college that morning, I decorated our home with buntings and balloons. – My mother baked and iced the cake. – Actually she has a gifted hand at cooking and baking. – I ordered some fritters, spring rolls, sandwiches and pastries for the guests. – I even organised some games such as musical chairs, treasure hunt and passing the parcel. – When my brother came home that day, we all were waiting for him. – We welcomed him by playing the birthday tune. – Everyone clapped and wished him happy birthday. – He was really surprised and very happy. I could tell it from his face. – The he cut the cake and we all enjoyed the cake and snacks – Then we played the games. – Everyone enjoyed a lot. – I gifted a cell phone to my brother. – He always wanted it but my parents wouldn’t let him buy one. – I always felt his desperation for the phone, so I had planned to gift him one on his birthday. – He received many other gifts also but my gift was the most special for him. – We all danced a lot that day. – I felt great happiness that day. – I realised that true happiness lies in giving happiness to others. – My brother is very dear to me – May God give him a long and happy life!
Part 3 – Follow Up Questions
1. Do children like to party?
Yes, they do. Party means fun and enjoyment to them. It means new clothes, lots to eat and a chance to dance and make merry.
2. Do adults like to party?
Yes, adults like to party. To adults, it means a time to get together with friends and family. It means having a break from the monotonous routine life. It is a time to recharge one’s batteries.
3. Do you like loud music in party?
No, personally I don’t. It gives me a headache. But most of my friends do. They think that any party is incomplete without loud music.
You should say:
- When it took place
- Where it was
- Whose party it was
- What you did there
- How you felt about the party
It’s my pleasure to share with you about my attendance at a recent party. It was a birthday party of my friend – Hung, who turned 22 that day. This was also his farewell party just before his departure to Canada to further his study .
The party just happened last month at his own house in the hometown. Hung invited almost all of his buddies and we attended the birthday celebration together. Apart from us, there were more than 30 other guests on this occasion. They seemed to be unfamiliar with me but my guess was that they would be mostly Hung’s relatives, neighbors and his father’s colleagues.
We congregated and bought a present for him. It was such astonishment of us when we saw his huge birthday cake. 22 candles of different colors were lit around the cake and the whole house was redecorated for the occasion. We sang the birthday song when Hung cut the cake. We congratulated him and wished him an excellent academic term ahead and a prosperous life afterwards. Then we tasted the cake and had a good feast , the foods were quite tasty.
To me, this birthday party brought its own meaning. It was a valuable chance for us to gather together, talk to each other our daily life and share about our childhood memories. This party left a lasting impression on me and honestly, it is still fresh in my mind until now.
1. What types of party do people have?
There are many different kinds of party that people can take part in such as birthday party, celebration party or farewell party. Each party brings its own meaning but most of participants always feel on the cloud nine .
2. Why are parties important?
People have parties to celebrate special occasions like birthdays, weddings, or the beginning of a new year. I think it’s important to celebrate these things because they are milestones in our lives. Parties are a good way to bring people together, and they’re an opportunity to let off some steam.
3. Do you think parties will become more popular in the future?
No, I don’t think anything will change. People have always had parties, and I’m sure they always will in the future. Humans need to socialise and enjoy themselves, and parties are one of the best ways to do that.
4. Do people spend a lot of money on these parties in your country?
I would say my answer is yes. People think they can splash out in some special cases such as
- What was it about?
- Where was it held?
- What did people do at the party?
- Explain what you enjoyed at this party?
Life has given me a lot of happiness and moments to celebrate with my near and dear ones. I have celebrated many happy moments by hosting parties for someone and attending other people’s parties as well.
I have attended many parties on different occasions in my life but the most enjoyable one was a party that I held to mark my elder sisters twenty-fifth birthday. It was a surprise party that I planned with the help of my mother. It was on the twenty-fifth of September last year, and I had started to plan it two days before. After my sister left for work in the morning I started decorating our garden and installing the setup including the tables and chairs. My mother started baking her favorite chocolate cake while I called all her friends and our relatives to the party in the evening. I then proceeded to order snacks and appetizers along with the beverages for the evening. The celebrations finally commenced and all the guests had arrived before she came. We welcomed her with the birthday song and hugs from everyone.
We all had an amazing time at the party. Everybody socialized, we played party games, danced and had a lot of fun throughout the evening. The best part was the fact that everyone was happy with the celebration and there were smiles all around me. My sister got gifts from everyone and was all smiles when I gifted her a necklace. She was spellbound and thanked me profusely for organizing such an amazing party.

Describe a birthday party or celebration that you attended recently.
You should say:
- Whose birthday it was?
- Who attended the party?
- Where did it take place?
- And describe the party.
Sample Answer 1
Here is the sample for the “Describe a birthday party or celebration that you attended recently” topic
It has become strenuous to relish family and social life in this hard-pressed life, despite investing best efforts. Still, whatever time I can spare, I ensure that I make the most out of it by connecting with people. So, lately, I attended a school friend’s birthday party.
It was more of a reunion than merely a birthday party if I put it realistically. In fact, I had received a little note from the birthday boy, describing how everybody in our group decided upon meeting on his birthday. So, accordingly, there had to be ten people. However, the number changed to 15 as some of the acquaintances also joined.
So, this birthday party was organized at the residence of another friend who lives in a colossal house with his family. The atmosphere at the party was friendly, warm, and emotional. A lot of snacks and drinks were arranged according to everybody’s choices and preferences. One of the best things about this party was that the birthday boy had a surprise for us. He had picked out pictures from our school days, created a slideshow out of it, and played it on a large screen. And then, he gave a full 30-minute-long speech, reminiscing all the good old days. All in all, the party was a blast, and we ended it on a good note with a scrumptious dinner.
Sample Answer 2
I have attended so many birthday parties, but the one I remember the best is my grandfather’s birthday when he turned 80 . That celebration is one of the best memories I can keep about him.
To people in our country, 80 years old is a special milestone in everyone’s life as the old people are respected for their experience and wisdom . Thus, in the 80 th birthday celebration, people often hold a big and extremely memorable party, inviting a lot of people to attend. Among the invitees , there were a lot of our relatives, neighbors, friends, and local authorities.
My grandfather’s 80 th birthday celebration took place at a convention near his house. It was such a quality time for my whole family and all our beloved relatives and friends to sit together. Everyone tried to choose a special gift for my grandpa. I was a little bit astonished when I saw the number of gifts my grandpa received, which meant how much my grandpa was loved. People also sent greetings to him, which are mostly about health. Then, people enjoyed the party with delicious and well-prepared food.
However, the most lovely part of the celebration was the time after the party. When all of the invitees had left, our family gathered together and took a trip down memory lane . It reminded me of the good old days when I was knee-high to a grasshopper and still a little stubborn girl who always got into trouble . No matter how big a problem I got into, I could always ask my grandpa for helps or advice as he would never turn his back on me.
Time flies so fast, but the memory still lasts. Grandpa and his 80 th birthday celebration would definitely be one of my sweetest memories.

By talking with the fun-having folks around you!
It is time you learned to start a casual conversation at a party and to keep it going.
This guide will give you ideas about safe and familiar topics for small talk as well as example phrases that you can use at your next party.
1. Start the Conversation by Breaking the Ice
Introduce yourself, introduce your companion, ask context-based questions, give a compliment, 2. discuss a topic that everyone can relate to, movies or tv shows, popular games, 3. ask personal questions to get to know the person better, how your day has been, work or studies, hobbies and interests, 4. end the conversation, exchange pleasantries, say goodbye, tips for smooth party conversations in english, know your conversational english, keep it light, balance between sharing and asking, and one more thing....

That moment when you arrive at a party and don’t recognize anyone is terrifying, but try not to worry. Think about the opportunities to make new friends, find out new things and, of course, practice your English.
Thus, take this chance to meet new people and break the ice (get the conversation started).
Be proactive and friendly. Come to the nearest person and say something like:
- Hi, I’m Sarah, nice to meet you.
- Hello, I don’t think we’ve met. My name is Sarah.
- Hey, I’m Sarah. I’m [name]’s friend.
- It’s great to finally meet you! I’m Sarah.
- Hey, my name is Sarah. What’s your name?
- Hey, I saw you over here and just wanted to introduce myself. I’m Sarah, Tom’s friend from English class.
See someone you have already met? In that case, you can remind the other person of when and where you two last met, as a way to start the conversation. Here is an example for you:
- Hi, we met here the last time but I don’t think we’ve spoken. I’m Sarah.
- Hey, I think we’ve met before. I’m Sarah.
- I remember meeting you sometime last year! How are you?
- You’re Tom’s friend, Jack, right? I remember you from English class!
- I don’t think I introduced myself last time. I’m Sarah. What’s your name?
If you go to the party with a friend, you can also introduce him or her, saying something like this:
- Hi, this is my classmate/colleague/friend/boyfriend Tom.
- I’d like you to meet my classmate/colleague/friend/boyfriend.
- I’d like to introduce you to my classmate/colleague/friend/boyfriend.
- Do you remember Jack?
- Have you met my best friend, Will? It’s his first time in the U.S.
- Meet Tom! I thought I’d bring him along to the party to meet you all!
After introducing yourself, you can start with some basic questions to establish common ground for the conversation to develop. The easiest way is to start with things you are most likely to have in common: knowing the host of the party and living in the same city.
Here are some questions you can use:
- How do you know [the host]?
- How long have you known [the host] for?
- Do you live/study/work here in [the city]?
- How long have you been here?
- What do you think of the city?
- Do you also know [name of another friend]?
If something stands out in the person you are talking with, like if he or she arrived with a companion, it could be appropriate to ask, “How do you know each other?” Similarly, if they have a name you don’t recognize, you could ask something like, “This is the first time I’ve met someone named [their name]. Where is that name originally from?”
People like compliments, especially if they are genuine. A positive comment followed by a question is a good way to break the ice.
Here are some examples to give you ideas:
- The food is delicious. Did you make it?
- That’s a lovely bracelet. Can I ask where you got it?
- I love your jacket! Where did you get it from?
- That painting over there looks incredible! Did you paint it?
- Could you share the playlist with me? You’ve got a great taste in music!
Once you get to know the other person a little bit, you can discuss a topic in more detail. It is best to start with something universal (something that almost anyone can relate to) and uncontroversial. Here is some safe ground.
You might find talking about the weather a bit boring. After all, we all know what the weather is like today, right? But the weather is one thing we can all relate to. Therefore, you can ask more questions and your new friend might have things to share.
If you decide it is a good enough starter, here are some sample sentences you can use:
- How do you find the weather here?
- Do you prefer hot or cold weather?
- It’s a lovely day today. Have you been doing anything outside?
- It’s freezing today, isn’t it?
- The snow is amazing! Do you like snow?
- Does it get this cold back in your hometown?
- What’s your favorite season? I’ve always loved the weather during the summer. Winter is too cold for me!
Here is an in-depth guide to vocabulary and phrases for talking about the weather in English .
Did you hear some exciting news today? Share it and ask for others’ opinions.
Of course, if you want to avoid arguments, it is best to stay away from political news. Try topics like technology, health, the environment, etc.
Here are examples of how you can bring up the news:
- Did you hear about the latest test of self-driving cars? When do you think we will see one in our city?
- I heard on the news today about the plastic-free pledge from some supermarkets. Do you think it will make a difference?
- Did you see the news report on … ?
- Do you prefer to read or watch the news?
- On the news this morning, they said that the snow and ice might cause long delays at the airport and some flights might even be canceled.
If you spent the last few evenings watching a new TV show, don’t hesitate to share it. Questions about the latest movies and shows are an easy win. It is likely that you will find something you both enjoy and can talk about it. So keep this topic in your pocket and practice questions like these:
- Have you seen “Stranger Things?”
- I watched the latest episode of “Black Mirror” last night. Did you see it?
- I heard Ryan Gosling was terrific in “La La Land.” What do you think?
- My friend recommended that I watch “Avatar: The Way of Water” this weekend. Have you seen it?
- Tom told me that you’ve watched it, too. Did you like it?
- I finally watched the final of “The Great British Bake Off.” What did you think of the ending?
- I love watching movies at the weekend! Can you recommend any movies?
Just like TV and movies, games can be a great topic to find common ground. Besides asking pointed questions, you can share your experiences with a game to see if the other person relates to it.
Here are some examples:
- Have you ever played Dungeons & Dragons?
- I love Monopoly. We used to play it on the weekend when I was a kid. Do you know the game?
- Do you like card games? Tom’s so good at them. He always wins!
- Do you have a favorite board game?
- Do you want to play Jenga with us later?
- What game do you usually play at parties?
Polite and safe conversations about universal topics can only take you so far. As the party goes on, and when you have talked to one person for a while, it is appropriate to ask more personal questions and share your own stories.
Here are some topics you can touch on.
This is a somewhat personal topic, but it is still safe because it is so general. The person you are talking to can choose to tell you whatever they want about their day. Plus, it can make good conversation because your day is still fresh in your memory.
Here are a few ways you can approach this topic:
- How was your day?
- Did you have a good day at work?
- What did you learn today at school/class? Anything exciting?
- I had a hard time at work today. Do you have a problem with Mondays as well?
- Did you decide to go out for lunch today or stay in the office? I went to the new café with my colleagues!
- What was the traffic like during your commute home this afternoon?
Notice how you can choose to just ask questions, or share your experience and see if it resonates.
You are likely to find out about the other person’s job or school within the first few minutes. However, you can move along by asking more questions about how they find it.
- How do you find your work/studies?
- What made you choose to study [subject]?
- Have you always wanted to be a/an [job]?
- What is a typical day like at your work/school?
- How are things going with your work/studies?
- What do you want to do after you graduate?
- How did you find your current job?
- I am looking for a job in marketing and I heard you work in marketing. Do you have any advice?
If you don’t find common ground in work and study topics, you can always ask about hobbies.
You have the option to ask directly:
- What do you like to do on the weekend?
- What do you do for fun?
- Would you ever try skydiving or another extreme sport?
- Do you have any plans for the holiday?
- Do you play any instruments?
- Do you like traveling?
- If you had more free time during the week, would you start a new hobby?
Alternatively, you can make it more appealing by giving it the context of your own experience, then ask about their opinion. Here are some examples:
- I saw this documentary about South Africa yesterday. It was amazing. I would love to go there. Have you been?
- My husband bought me this vegetarian cookbook for my birthday and I cannot wait to try it out. Do you like cooking?
- My friend wants me to go bungee jumping with him next year for his birthday but it terrifies me! Have you ever done a bungee jump?
- I want to learn how to play the guitar but I don’t know where to start. Do you know any guitar teachers around here?
- I really wanted to learn Spanish, so I moved to Barcelona. Have you ever lived abroad?
- Tom and I went to the new Italian restaurant last night. The food was incredible! You should check it out!
Every party has to come to an end no matter how much fun you have. When it is time to leave, there are a few rules of politeness that you should follow.
Americans are very polite and enthusiastic. You will find that people thank one another a lot and always want to leave one another on a pleasant note. Therefore, you should learn to do the same.
Here are a few things you can say when you are about to leave the party:
- It’s been nice talking to you.
- Thanks for telling me about your studies. It was fascinating.
- You have some real travel stories there. I cannot wait to hear more.
- I’ve had a great time tonight!
- What an amazing party! Thank you so much for inviting me!
Promising to speak again is a nice way to indicate that you enjoyed talking to someone. Even if you don’t know whether you will see them again, there are polite expressions that people use and you should too.
- It was great to finally meet you!
- Bye for now. See you next time/next week/soon.
- Have a safe trip home. I hope to see you again.
- Goodnight. Take care. We will talk more next time.
Conversations at a party tend to be different from ones in formal settings. Here are the three tips to help you fit in and thrive when conversing with English-speaking partygoers.
When you’re at a party, you’ll be surrounded by fast, slang-filled English speech everywhere you turn. This can definitely make talking seem a little scary. But with a little preparation, you can be more confident in your skills.
There are many resources to learn common conversational English and slang . You can learn a lot from authentic English content like English books, TV shows , movies , videos and more.
FluentU takes authentic videos—like music videos, movie trailers, news and inspiring talks—and turns them into personalized language learning lessons.
You can try FluentU for free for 2 weeks. Check out the website or download the iOS app or Android app.

As you build up your knowledge of conversational English and learn about the culture, you’ll be more ready to mingle at English parties!
Parties are the time to relax, unwind and let your hair down (be free and have fun). You don’t want to be that person who drags a party down with depressing conversation topics. Stay upbeat and stick with topics like your plans for the weekend or the weather.
As a party goes on and you get into more in-depth conversations, it is probably alright to discuss serious matters in a lighthearted manner. A joke always works better than a confrontational argument.
Don’t just talk about yourself for the whole evening. Make sure that you have a two-way conversation. Not only will this make you a better party guest, but it will also help you improve both your English speaking and listening skills .
Ask others about themselves . If you show that you genuinely care about the other person, they will be more likely to keep talking to you rather than moving to the next person.
Party conversations can be challenging, but they can also be a lot of fun!
With these topics and phrases, you don’t have to worry about what to say, but can focus on practicing your English.
If you like learning English through movies and online media, you should also check out FluentU. FluentU lets you learn English from popular talk shows, catchy music videos and funny commercials , as you can see here:

Graduation Invitation Wording Guide and Examples
- Graduation Invitation Wording: What to Include?
Graduation Invitation Wording Style
High school graduation invitation wording, college graduation invitation wording.
- Audience : Who To Invite To Graduation Ceremony
What’s the Normal Invitation Length?
Wording for graduation ceremony invitation or party invite, sample graduation invitation templates, graduation invitation wording: what to include.
- Name of high school/college/university
- Degree and honors, if applicable
- Graduation year
- Time, date, location of ceremony or grad party
- RSVP date and instructions

Be Conversational
- Recognize that the graduation invite should be half of a conversation, rather than a formal declaration. Be sure to include yourself in the wording as well and avoid using the passive voice instead, rely on the active voice. For example, replace The party is being held at ____ with We’re having the party at ____.
- Keep the wording simple and brief by cutting longer sentences in half. Don’t be afraid to start your sentences with conjunctions such as and, but, because, etc., or to use contractions such as we’re, she’s, you’ll, etc.
- Above all, be sure that while you’re limiting your formality, you’re retaining clarity—you want your guests to be able to actually understand what your invitation is trying to say.
- A quick introductory sentence, such as “Celebrate with us,” followed by the party logistics including the event, date, time, location, RSVP contact number, etc should do the trick.
- Consider including future plans.
- Close with a friendly farewell.
- When it comes to visuals, you can use senior pictures , images of the grad through different stages of his or her life, or photographs of the grad with friends or family, etc.
Be Specific About Accomplishments
- Let recipients know what those accomplishments are, by briefly mentioning them in the invitation.
Be Ceremonial
- Use formal titles, the graduate’s and hosts’ full names.
- Avoid contractions.
- Spell out common abbreviations and all numbers.
Consider The Theme
- If, for example, the party has a Luau theme, then use the Shutterfly graduation invite personalization options to select a bright color scheme, as well as an appropriate font (such as ‘Zalderdash’ or ‘Felt Tip Roman’).
Additional College Graduation Announcement Wording Tips
Audience: who to invite to graduation ceremony, consider your relationship.
- For invitations being sent to family members, or even close friends, consider including a separate, personal newsletter-style note detailing what the graduate has been up to, and what his or her plans are for the future. This note can either be placed directly in the envelope with the graduation invite, or sent separately. Including a short newsletter will allow you to make the invitations more personal for specific recipients, without needing to change the wording or the design of the invitation itself.
Consider The Personal Family Situation
- Instead of tailoring your invitations only towards the classically defined family (husband, wife, kids), make it more open, and less specific.

How's it going?
Sorry I haven't been in touch for such a long time but I've had exams so I've been studying every free minute. Anyway, I'd love to hear all your news and I'm hoping we can get together soon to catch up. We just moved to a bigger flat so maybe you can come and visit one weekend?
How's the new job?
Looking forward to hearing from you!
I've been meaning to write to you for ages now so don't worry! How did your exams go? When will you know your results? I'm sure you did brilliantly as always!
As for me, I'll have been in the new job three months by the end of next week so I'm feeling more settled in. At first I felt like I had no idea what I was doing but now I realise it's normal to feel like that. There was a lot to learn – there still is actually – and I soon had to get used to the idea that I can't know everything. I used to work late a lot and at weekends but I'm slowly getting into a normal routine.
Which means I'd love to come and visit! We really need a good catch up! I can't believe we haven't seen each other since Carl's wedding. How does next month sound?
Anyway, I'd better get back to work.
Congratulations on the new flat! Can't wait to see you!

What's the best way to stay in touch with friends you don't see often?
Language level
Well, I think the best way to stay in touch with my friends is call them or write them e-mails. Another way is by visiting their social networks, comments their publications or putting Likes on their photos. They love that.

The best way to keep in touch is to go and see them!
I was pulling your leg! It was the best way before the internet was invented.
After the advent of the Internet, nobody can complain about not being aware of your friends and family. There are a lot of ways we can choose according to our situation.
In my view, video and voice calls make a more tangible connection. I usually reach out to them on special occasions like their birthday. But at other times, send a text and voice message.
If I would like to catch my friend on the hop, on her birthday, I will write a letter. This sounds old-fashioned but, in this era, receiving a letter is an unusual and exciting way to hear from someone.
I prefer to stay in touch with my friends by using instant messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.
I agree, but i think THE BEST WAY IS TO see one anotHer . I know i'm old school
the best way to stay in touch with my friends i don't see often is texting them since we are occupied with our study and we also don't have much free time to meet in person.
I use Facebook and other social media to see what my friends are doing on daily basis. But if I want to know what is really happen I have to call them. The best way to know what's going on and how someone is feeling is to meet him and talk
I think so in all things that you right Sanja.
I think the most important is offline meetings. The best way is go to interesting place and after all speak about most interesting events in life. For example, I can go to cinema and then walk in park with guitar and ice cream and speak about everything!
What's your assement about this email ? thank you for advance.
Dear Bob I Hope this letter will find you and your entire family in good health. It's been a while! I'm writing to tell you about my recent relocation to a new house. As I told you the last time we spoke on the phone that I've got a new job, so it saves money, avoids traffic and it requires less effort to get to my office. My new house is close to Victoria métro station and it's located in the town's center. It's a second floor apartement with two bedrooms, a leavingroom, a small dining room, a bathroom and of corse a kitchen, it's rather roomy for that reason why I'm grateful for it. Besides the neighborhood is serene and beautiful as well. Would you like to visit us for a few days during the next holiday, I'm sure you'll enjoy the area, so we are waiting for you. I look forward to seeing you in my new home Take care Warm wishes Adil.
