South Korea- My Favourite Destination.

profile

“Wanderlust: A Strong Desire to Wander or Travel and Explore the World.” What makes a place or a country an ideal destination? Is it the scenery, the monuments, the people or the culture? Maybe all of it plays an important role in making a country or a place an ideal destination or even, a destination as a matter of fact. A destination is a place which is worth making a special journey for. Keeping the things said in mind, my ideal/favourite destination is South Korea.

South Korea, officially theRepublic of Korea(ROK), is a country in East Asia , constituting the southern part of the Korean Peninsula . Its capital, Seoul , is a major global city and half of South Korea's 51 million people live in the Seoul Capital Area , the fourth largest metropolitan economy in the world. South Korea is a highly developed country and the world's 11th largest economy by nominal GDP .Its citizens enjoy the world's fastest Internet connection speeds and the longest years of tertiary education in the world, along with the world's second most equal access to quality healthcare, resulting in the third highest health adjusted life expectancy in the world.South Korea is a global leader in many technology and innovation driven fields, being the world's 5th largest exporter and 8th largest importer . Since 2014, South Korea has been named the world's most innovative country by the Bloomberg Innovation Index for 6 consecutive years.

Apart from all this, the tourist places are the best part of this country. The dazzling capital city will impress you with its dizzying mix of modern architecture, party vibes, pop culture, beautiful parks & glittering promenades. Vibrant Seoul is not just a buzzing urban hub but also rich in history and culture. With gorgeous palaces, chic restaurants and stylish boutiques, Seoul is charming all the way. The National Museum and War Memorial take you through the history of the country, while the cool shopping district of Gangnam gives you a taste of the city’s ritzy side. The Jeju Island, The Korean Demilitarized Zone, the Dadohaehaesang National Park and the Andong Hahoe Folk Village are some of the major tourist attractions that the country has to offer. Foodies can relish the sea food spread at the numerous restaurants and enjoy local delicacies at the ubiquitous street food stalls spread across the whole country. South Korea is a perfectly balanced country with its new and the old elements of the world.

It is rich in the new technology and also preserves its past with respect and glory. South Korea is a country that works for a newer, better and a more hospitable destination for the people belonging to different parts of the globe.

In the end I would say that “South Korea has it all to make it to anyone’s ideal destination”.

There are so many reasons to love South Korea. There is just something about it that is so captivating, magical, and unlike anywhere else in the world.

Your curiosity and love for travel are what drive us, and we can’t wait to share our world with you. Here’s to countless adventures and unforgettable memories!

Stay curious, stay adventurous!

70% of the country is mountainous and as you venture beyond Seoul, you will find quaint little villages, tea fields, old Joseon houses, and mountaintop Buddhist temples where you can live with monks for a matter of days/weeks. You are hard-pushed to find travel destinations that are as rewarding as South Korea.

Embarking on a South Korea travel itinerary for a few weeks truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Let’s look at all the reasons to love South Korea.

Reasons to Love South Korea

South korea is still relatively off-the-beaten-path.

Why Love South Korea

South Korea is a relatively untapped travel destination. Little is known about it on an international scale.

Korean cities like Jeonju, Gyeongju , Sokcho, and Busan are wonderful travel destinations. They are popular among Koreans and ESL Teachers living in the country.

If you visit Korea, you should not miss the opportunity to spend a few days on Jeju island . This tropical paradise is often referred to as the ¨Hawaii of Korea¨.

But mention a weekend break in Jeonju to most people and they have no idea what you are talking about. While it’s a shame that Korea is often overlooked, in some ways this may be a good thing.

South Korea has definitely not experienced overtourism like many of its neighbour Asian countries. Travelling in South Korea ensures an authentic experience in a country where you will not be having to contend with masses of tourist crowds.

Korean food is delicious!

If you have travelled a fair bit, you have probably had an experience in the past where you have really gotten tired of the local food in a country you were travelling in. It happens to most of us at some point.

You may begin to crave familiar foods. Or you may have gotten to the point where you felt that you couldn’t bear to see another bowl of *insert name of relevant local dish here*.

Fortunately, Korean food is incredibly diverse. You could spend a month in Seoul and discover a new dish, new places like Sool gallery , and a new favourite Seoul restaurant every day.

A lot of people have a stereotypical perception of Asian food and assume that all the dishes are prepared with fish or strange animals that are not consumed in the west. However, many of Korea’s noodle dishes, jiggaes (soups), and marinated meat dishes are suitable for a western palate.

Korean food delivers just the right blend between eastern and western cuisines. If you want to sample some quintessentially Korean dishes, be sure to order kimchi jiggae.

Popular dishes to try

Koreans enjoy kimchi (fermented, pickled cabbage) as an accompaniment to virtually every meal. There are actually more than 100 types of kimchi in existence!

Kimchi jiggae, then, is a kimchi-based stew that is also prepared with pork, tofu, and a spicy broth made with soy sauce, gochujang, and chili flakes. If you find yourself in Seoul, head to Gwanghwamun Jip (12 Saemunan-ro 5-gil, Jongno-gu), a tiny hole-in-the-wall near Gwanghwamun square that only serves kimchi jiggae.

The lady that owns this restaurant has won awards for her recipe and has been recognised in international media publications. Locals widely regard this as being the very best place to eat the dish and that’s saying something considering the fact that they will typically eat it 2-3 times a week!

Another must-try local dish? Bibimbap! This beef hot pot dish originates from Jeonju and is made by serving rice with vegetables, beef, and spicy gochujang sauce.

Korean street food is unparalleled

Korean street food is a large part of Korean culture. This is a great way to eat out without breaking the bank – perfect if you are traveling on a budget.

You will find street food stalls on virtually every street corner of all Korean towns and cities. There are also several larger markets in Seoul, Busan, and beyond, dedicated to street food.

In Seoul, Gwangjang market , Ansan multicultural street , Noryangjin fish market , Tongin traditional market, and Namdaemun food market street are all spots to add to your radar. Gwangjang is a great place for more adventurous eaters. Meanwhile, Ansan is filled with vendors that hail from China and Southeast Asia.

Tteokbokki (chewy rice cakes served in spicy tomato sauce) is a popular street food dish that you will find virtually everywhere. If you have a sweet tooth, you will love hotteok 호떡. These are sweet pancakes that are typically made in the shape of a fish and filled with red bean paste.

Seoul is the beauty capital of the world!

my favourite place south korea essay

It is a widely-known fact that Seoul is the beauty capital of the world . There are cosmetic stores, beauty salons, and nail bars on virtually every street corner in Seoul districts like Insadong and Myeongdong.

Not to mention, Korean cosmetics and skin care products have received major international recognition in recent years. In 2018, the South Korean beauty industry was estimated to have a value of more than $13.1 billion.

The Korean cosmetic industry is more than 10 years ahead of its American, European, and Western counterparts. Korean beauty standards differ a lot from beauty standards in the west , with a lot of emphasis being placed on taking care of the skin.

While you are in Seoul, you may want to consider treating yourself to a facial. That way you will get to experience the secrets of that fresh, glowing skin that is uniquely Korean, for yourself.

Shangpree Spa in Cheongdam offers indulgent facials and is beloved by movie stars, K-Pop singers, and the Seoul elite. You may also want to consider getting a Korean body scrub at a jimjilbang (traditional Korean bathhouse).

Koreans are welcoming, fun-loving people

Why love South Korea

Korean people are very kind and friendly. For the most part, Korean locals have a genuine interest in meeting people from other backgrounds and cultures and learning about where they come from.

During my time living and travelling in Korea, I met many people who went out of their way to be kind to me with no expectation of anything in return. This is a rare quality to find in the world today.

You will find that there are a lot of language exchange groups scattered all over the country, where locals try to improve their English by hanging out with foreigners, in exchange for teaching the foreigners some Korean. These groups can be a great way to meet local friends.

Korea has a fascinating history and culture

Reasons to love South Korea

Korea is rich in history that dates back centuries. There are hundreds of ancient temples and historical sites dotted throughout the country. Rest assured, you will always have plenty to see and do.

Korea is relatively new to international tourism. In recent years, there have been a lot of initiatives by the Korean Tourism Board to encourage foreign travellers to visit the country.

A lot of attractions are free or very affordable to enter. Initiatives like the Korean Temple stay program give you a wonderful opportunity to learn about this vibrant country.

There are constant events and festivals

Every time you walk past Gwanghamun Square, Seoul there seems to be something going down. Whether that is old Korean ladies dancing around with tambourines, or North Korean food shows and live music.

Koreans have some pretty unique celebrations within their annual calendars. For example, Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) and Hangeul Day (Celebration of the Korean language).

There are also some peculiar and “only in Korea” type festivals also. The Kimchi festival and the Boryeong mud festival are two such examples.

Koreans have a huge passion for outdoor culture

10 Reasons I Love South Korea

Seoul is often depicted as a bustling megalopolis. However, that is far from reality.

As a matter of fact, 70% of South Korea is mountainous. Hiking is essentially the “national sport” of Korea. Many trails and mountain ascents can be found just a short distance away from central Seoul.

They make perfect day trips from the Korean capital .

Even if you are travelling Korea solo , there are numerous hiking groups across the country that organise regular hiking trips and excursions. Check Couchsurfing, Meetup.com, and WinK (When in Korea) for the latest events.

Korea is a Coffee Addict’s Paradise

10 Reasons I Love South Korea

Coffee culture is huge in Korea. There is a coffee shop on virtually every street corner in Seoul. Many of these have been decorated with quirky, and often downright eccentric themes.

Many Seoul coffee shops were photogenic and ¨instagrammable¨ before being instagrammable was even a thing. Hell Cafe (238-43 Bogwang-dong, Yongsan-gu) is one place to add to your radar if you are a fan of quality coffee.

Many of the baristas working here have won awards and are recognised as being among the best in the country. Meanwhile, Stylenanda Pink Pool cafe (23 Wausan-ro 29da-gil, Mapo-gu) is a cute coffee shop and concept fashion/beauty store that is styled like a pink, feminine hotel.

There is a large international community

A combination of Ex-pats, ESL teachers, Travellers, and fun-loving Koreans make for a great community of people to socialise with in Korea. There are so many like-minded people living or passing through here with similar interests.

You can check apps like Couchsurfing or Meetup to find events taking place during your trip. Korean and English language exchanges are popular and are another great way to both make Korean friends and learn some hangul.

Koreans follow the mantra of work hard, play harder

Reasons to love South Korea

It is true that Koreans have some of the longest studying and working schedules in the world. However, they party just as hard.

Who cares if it’s a Tuesday and you have to be up tomorrow? Bars and clubs rarely have a closing hour and there’s no open bottle rule so it’s perfectly acceptable to swig your makgeolli on the subway on your way to the next party.

Korean lifestyle goes beyond the dull western working routine of working a 9-5 and living for the weekend. Koreans work hard but they certainly make use of every moment of free time they have available.

Korea is a safe country

Korea is a very safe country. Since the country has such a nighttime culture, even walking home late in the evening there will always be people around.

But it isn’t just that. Having respect for other people and their belongings is so deeply ingrained in Korean culture.

You could easily venture into a coffee place, leave your things unattended at your table for a while and wander off. When you got back, you would be sure to find that all of your things were where you left them.

What other countries in the world could you say that about? Even solo female travellers can feel very safe in Korea.

Public transport is cheap and efficient

Reasons to love South Korea

The subway is super efficient and cheap in Korea. The Seoul metro network extends out of Seoul central into neighbouring districts of Suwon and Bucheon.

Express trains exist to make longer journeys faster and more manageable. Rest assured, you won’t find it tricky to get around during your Seoul itinerary.

A city bus to any stop in Seoul will not set you back more than $2 at most. When travelling cross-country by bus or rail, you will rarely spend more than $30 on a ticket.

Parting Words

These are the 13 why reasons I love South Korea. Although when I sit and think about it there are many more reasons to love South Korea.

Have you ever visited? What do you love about the country? Conversely, were there any things that you didn’t like about Korea ? If you are interested in learning more about Korea, you may also enjoy reading this post on South Korean culture and traditions

You’ve talked me into going! I already love Korean food and Korean eyeliner, so I’m sure I’ll love the country itself.

Haha, I certainly recommend it! There are not enough words to express my love of Korean makeup! Ha

South Korea seems like such an amazing country! I would love to visit sometime soon but I need to save up some money first haha 😉

It looks like you had a fantastic time! I’ve always wanted to check out South Korea, and I’m definitely adding it to my list!

South Korea is up there on one of my places to visit. Awesome post!

Very nice things mentioned about Korea, I had two South Korean friends and reading this reminded me of them… the food and culture and the temples and their history are very alluring reasons for one to like Korea for sure(:

Looks like a place I should add to my ever growing #BucketList. Coffee Cocktails look great.

South Korea is on my list to do, I didn’t have time last time I was in Asia. It looks great and good to hear so many positive things about a place, can’t wait to go 🙂

I really wish I had had the opportunity to visit Korea as a tourist. I lived there for 2.5 years and I will say that experience made me dislike the country quite a bit. Its quite a stressful and mundane place after a few months. It’s so beige! I digress, though. I’m honestly super happy you enjoyed your time there as it is an incredible place to be for a short period of time. Long term – not so much. Regardless, I’d have to say my favorite aspect of Korea is that there are so many mountains. I have a lot of respect for the elders in that country – they’ve gone through and experienced so much. Thanks for sharing your insights!

I feel the same way about missing Korean food! I lived there for 4 years and would always cook like a quesadilla to self-soothe after a particularly tough day, but now that I’m in the states…. I do the opposite! I’m constantly looking to Korean food for comfort. I’d say my top 2 things I miss and love (other than my lovely little lovebugmonster students) would be Kimbap restaurants and the hiking. Would you ever consider moving there?

Haha I can understand that! I’ve lived abroad a few times, and always really missed peculiar food items that I take for granted in the UK, then in the UK miss all various stuff from my travels. I am moving there to teach in Suwon! My flight is tomorrow actually. Super exited! I know living somewhere is different to visiting but excited for the experience 🙂 whereabouts were you living in Korea?

Thanks so much for sharing about South Korea. I have to admit I’m one of “those” who does not know much about the country. Judging from your post and experience, it seems like a great place to visit. I am quite interested in exploring the food and landscapes. Definitively adding South Korea to my bucket list. Great write up!

I want to go so bad!!! These are all great reasons. I am sure my favorite would be the food, history & culture and the outdoor aspects. I would have never though of S. Korea being an outdoorsy place. I love it.

I haven’t been to South Korea but your post makes it sound even more interesting than I originally thought! I think I would love the history and culture, and the food of course… thanks for sharing your experiences.

Never been but I would love to visit. And I am not scared of the neighbour :)))

OK, now Korea is on my wish list – you had me at food!! Thanks for sharing your insight, I don’t know a huge amount about Korea, but now I want to!

I’ve never been to Korea but, I really, really want to go someday. In fact if I hadn’t been successful in getting my current job (cabin crew) I was going to take a TEFL course with the goal of moving out to teach English. Now I am just waiting to get trained on the Dreamliner so I can go with work haha! I also highly recommend CosRx skincare if you haven’t already tried it, the snail treatment and sleeping mask are fantastic 😀

I hope you get chance to visit! It is a wonderful country 🙂 Haha at least it worked out for you! Best of luck in your new job. CosRx is a brand that I haven’t tried yet so I will take a look. Korean beauty products are so good – definitely a highlight to being here! I am not sure if they are available internationally, but I really like Innis Free (all products with natural ingredients made in Jeju), Nature Republic (They also have a great snail range!) and Etude House (really cute packaging!) check them out if you are able! 😀

I got to know very much about south Korea because of this

Hey Chanchal, glad that you found the blog useful!

I love south Korea,, I pray that one day I will be there.

Thanks for sharing ur journey to South Korea. It helped me a lot with one of my school projects😊

My Dream Destination Is Seoul, South Korea!

Updated: Oct 21, 2023

Seoul, South Korea, is one of those cities across the world, which is famous for its vibrant culture, friendly people, late-night parties, and spicy Kimchi! Basically, this city is best for youngsters especially girls travelling solo to enjoy the thrill of their age.

Additionally, what draws me to Seoul is its language, dialect, dressing sense, modern and rural culture amalgamation, and the fantastic South Korean dramas that are filmed.

Those who are keen for travelling must already know that Seoul, South Korea, is a city never to miss. Here you experience the rundown of the busiest lives of South Korea.

You can even say it is New York, Mumbai, or Shanghai of South Korea. In short, the busiest, yet the liveliest city to live in South Korea.

The Features In Detail About Seoul:

The eating culture of Seoul is finger-licking good

There are more choices for side dishes than in the main course. People love it like the most amazing street food items to try whenever they step in Seoul. We can say, every street corner has an array of street food joints.

The way each side dish is cooked and served is another kind of experience. Many of these street food corners have little tents mounted. Then, others have some food vans at the corner.

People often sit in those tents after getting done with the work for the day. Be it a corporate person, or a wage worker, you can find anyone in those tented street food corners. That’s one of the fantastic experiences to observe and take home whenever you want to try a new dish, most likely to be spicy, tangy, and juicy.

Thus, such evenings always end up with Soju; the local beverage ordered most often by adults while consuming the spiciness blasted in the mouth by those unforgettable dishes.

Karaoke nights are the best to forget the stress

Seoul is full of Karaoke and live music restaurants and bars. Again, it is an addition to the party-culture embedded in its roots. Thus, for a young adult, who wants to enjoy life like it’s the best day to date, hopping from one Karaoke to another with Korean, and expat friends here is a must.

It is so compelling for an adult like me that I want to live those moments with full enjoyment and without any judgments.

Cheap study rooms to set your career right

Seoul is one of those cities that is home to a crazy amount of 24-hour operational study rooms. Most of the students in South Korea are focused on applying for government services at least once in their lifetime, which is similar to Indian students.

Thus, they are offering study rooms for an entire day at just Rs. 400-500 or $6 per day. This equates to be around 7000 South Korean Won per day. This is the cheapest way to study for your government exams for which you want to apply in the country while planning to become a permanent resident of South Korea.

There is a large scope for IT and E-commerce ventures

South Korea is one of the IT-friendly countries in the world. Whereas Seoul is more focused on creativity, IT, and start-ups related to E-commerce. Thus, it is one of the best dream destinations because I know there is a lot of scope for the IT sector here.

There is a dominance of smart homes

The majority of the upscale provinces of Seoul have smart homes. They are controlled by central keypads or your average smartphone – even from a far distance. Thus, chances of theft, burglary, fire, and other uncertainties your house might be vulnerable to, are cut down by a large number.

That is because the house owners can continuously be in touch with the happenings of their houses even when they are not in the house ! That’s an amazing relief to those who work for late hours outside, those who love to travel to other places, and those who live alone.

You can become a really responsible citizen, despite all the partying across the town while you are living in Seoul.

There is a crazy scope for bargaining!

Those who want to live out in Seoul at a very affordable cost can do so. That’s possible because South Korea is the land of the electronics industry globally, being the home to Samsung and LG.

Thus, Seoul, the country capital, has a lot of shops and vendors selling upbeat electronics products at a very low rate.

But, if you get to those provinces where there are multiple electronic shops lined together, you can always try your luck at haggling to buy the best products at the lowest prices in Seoul.

The inheritance of living a quality life

Most Korean in Seoul love to live a quality life. Thus, I want to learn how they work, what they eat, and how they are so happy about living with the stressful work culture. It is a very rare trait that is missing in most countries across the world.

Once we learn to live by that stress with a happy smile that comes straight from the heart, life will be more beautiful and happier like it never was.

Learn the art of passive income here

Most Seoulites love side-hustle. That means they are masters of part-time jobs that can equate to your monthly income easily. In fact, I would say the part-time or the gig economy has been strongly initiated by South Koreans.

This can also be one of the reasons why these Seoulites are so happy in their life. They know how to make their income work and multiply itself in the coming years. Apart from that, people living here do not hesitate to try out new experiences in life.

Because of such beliefs and mindset, I am incredibly drawn to Seoul. I want to know how to save, invest, and earn money in the most organic and smart way possible.

Thus, I find Seoul to be the best learning source and a dream destination for me at this moment.

Narrative Essay: My Trip to South Korea

I had always wanted to visit South Korea and I recently had the chance to spend a week in this amazing country. Unlike its northern neighbor which is pretty much closed to visitors, South Korea is a welcoming and hospitable country. It is an interesting place with a unique culture and a highly developing economy.

I flew into the capital Seoul. On arrival in the city, it was the marked contrast between modern skyscrapers and high design shopping malls and shanty towns that was immediately striking. Wide streets lined by fancy boutiques lead to a labyrinth of narrow alleyways with tiny traditional shops and eateries and there is a clutch of great tourist attractions.

My tour itinerary began on Seoul’s main boulevard, Sejongro, because I wanted to see the Royal Palace (Gyeongbok), the President’s residence, known as Cheongwadae or the Blue House, and the American Embassy. From here it’s a fairly short walk to Bukchon where there is the city’s largest collection of privately owned traditional wooden houses. It’s a charm with beautiful architecture and small courtyards, with the houses interspersed with quaint cafes and art galleries.

Taking the same route the next day, I took a trip into the mountains that peak behind the President’s House, and climbed the one known as Bugaksan. This affords the opportunity to pass through the Sukjeongmun Gate and through the city’s ancient fortress wall. From here the Seoul Fortress is easily accessible and there are also amazing views of Seoul.

Shopping in the Orient is an amazing experience so I made sure to pay a visit to the Shinsegae downtown department store. This huge emporium sells probably everything you can imagine and is a complete charm in the way the bottom floors sell all the basic staples of daily life – including the ubiquitous kimchee (fermented cabbage) and are frequented by Korean housewives while the upper floors cater to the well-heeled and brand conscious. As fascinating as it is, the new rooftop garden is a welcome respite. But, if you are going to shop in Seoul, it’s a must to visit the street stalls and hawkers of the Namdaemum Market where the wares seem to be spread out in a blanket of never-ending stalls. Be prepared to be seriously jostled by the crowds, but it’s also the chance to feast on the best street food.

One of the most surprising sights and a rue delight is the Cheonggyecheon Stream. Running for just under 4 miles through the city, the stream is remarkably quiet given its location, because it is 15 foot below street level. The serene setting, accentuated by waterfalls and bridge is a favorite strolling spot for romantic couples.

With a flying visit to Itaewon, the popular ex-pat neighborhood near to the main US army base, my time in Seoul came to an end. I was enthralled and captivated and hope I get to return one day.

While South Korea might not yet be the number one travel destination for many around the world, there are plentiful reasons why you should visit the country of the morning calm on your next vacation. Sing karaoke in Seoul, go hiking in Seoraksan National Park and eat bibimbap in Jeonju on our 10-day small-group trip to South Korea .

Pulsating culture

Due to their long history, South Koreans have a variety of traditions they have kept alive throughout centuries. Still today, you can watch traditional Korean dance and music performances, while people love to dress in traditional clothes ( hanbok ) – you can rent it to wear around Seoul and Jeonju, for example. Even in modern Seoul, you can still find traditional hanok house neighborhoods with lovely teahouses that have been in existence for decades. This mix of old and new is truly fun to explore when traveling in South Korea.

Rich History

The history of South Korea is long and dating back over a thousand years. Due to the natural isolation of the Korean Peninsula, the country’s culture hasn’t changed as much as in other regions. Still today, you can stand in awe of some of the most significant cultural heritage sites of the country, such as Gyeongbokgung Palace, the main palace situated in Seoul. The city of Gyeongju is also a place of historic value and is often called a ‘museum without walls’. Gyeongju was the capital of Korea during the Silla Dynasty from 57 BC – 935 AD and is home to countless royal tombs, palaces, and temples that are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Year-round Festivals

When you are for the first time in South Korea, make sure you visit a festival. Every year, there are more festivals in South Korea than one could attend, with a couple of main festivities everyone likes to join in with. When the snow melts and the weather gets warmer, pink and white cherry blossoms transform South Korea into a magical wonderland for a short period at the beginning of spring, and thousands of people come to see the blossoms from all over the country. Buddha’s Birthday is another major holiday celebrated in May with lantern parades and performances at local temples, while in fall, Koreans celebrate their own version of Thanksgiving during Chuseok and honor their ancestors during proudly conducted ceremonies. In fact, there are festivals in every month of the year for every taste.

Futuristic Modernity

The modern face of South Korea I

In contrast to its historic landmarks, South Korea is a pioneer in creating new and innovative structures. Looking at Seoul, for example, you are surrounded by futuristic buildings in one part of the city, such as the Dongdaemun Design Plaza by Zaha Hadid, while traditional hanok neighborhoods lie just around the corner. Earlier this year, Seoul proudly opened the world’s fifth largest skyscraper piercing majestically out of the ground overlooking the Han River. It comes with little surprise that some of the world’s leading companies are also located here, including Samsung, Hyundai and Kia.

Exciting Food

Koreans are very proud of their unique cuisine. This is another result of the country’s natural isolation and climate leading to particular food preparation methods. Take kimchi , for example, the country’s number one side dish made from salted and fermented vegetables that are kept in jars for months, one of many practices used to protect food during harsh winters. Over the centuries, Koreans have created a fascinating and rich food culture made up of meat dishes, stews, soups, noodle dishes, seafood and many vegetable side dishes. Visit South Korea and you should spend an entire day roaming street markets sampling your way through this concert of flavors.

Quiet Countryside

As South Korea is not yet a worldwide popular vacation destination like its neighbors China and Japan, you will find untouched rural areas giving insight into traditional Korean lifestyle. While around 20% of all South Koreans live in and near Seoul, it’s especially the small rural villages where you can find peace and quiet. The well-connected railway and express bus systems make it easy to also explore the less visited areas of the country. You’ll be surprised that you can find lush rice terraces and hidden temples right here in South Korea.

Buddhist Nun Performing Tea Ceremony

You can find even more tranquility and inner peace when joining a one- or two-day templestay program, which allows you to spend some time living like Buddhist monks in temples across Korea. While the Korean templestay program might not be as heard of around the world, it’s a well-established organization offering English-speaking programs to anyone around the country. Whether you want to experience a templestay in downtown Seoul or in rural South Korea on top of a mountain, the options are endless and the results are incredibly rewarding.

Vibrant cities

While Seoul is arguably the most thrilling city in South Korea, it’s not the only large city that’s worth a visit. Despite its small size, South Korea has plenty of exciting cities from north to south. Busan in the very south, for example, is the country’s second largest city and located on a beautiful coastline with sandy beaches and clear ocean water. Jeonju in the west of the country is one of the last places featuring a traditional old town with Korean hanok houses and a beautiful destination in spring and fall. Each of Korea’s nine provinces has its own local cuisine and attractions that are worth exploring.

K-pop Culture

BTS

South Korea is world-famous for its exciting music culture. K-pop is not only a music genre, it’s part of Korean culture that captures people all over Asia and the world. Walking down main pedestrian streets in South Korea, you will hear the latest hits of the industry. K-pop fans visit South Korea in waves and visit their favorite group’s or singer’s music label, get a K-pop makeover or visit K-pop-themed cafés. If you’re not yet into Korean music, we guarantee you that after you visit South Korea, you will be.

Korean Trendsetters

Shoppers in Korea

K-pop and Korean fashion go almost hand in hand. However, in recent years, South Korea has not only become known for coming up with quirky outfits for their boy and girl groups but also setting global trends in regular fashion. Seoul Fashion Week, for example, is becoming more and more visited by international designers and fashion labels who visit fashion shows to import Korean fashion lines to their home countries in Europe, America, Africa and all over Asia. Visiting Seoul, visitors will also notice that South Koreans, in general, are very fashionable and love to experiment and show off their hot streetwear on the streets of Seoul. Visit Dongdaemun, Gangnam or Myeongdong to get your own sets of Korean outfits to take home with you.

Make-up and Skincare

Ever wonder why Korean women (and men!) have flawless and stunningly beautiful skin? Koreans see taking care of their skin as an essential part of their daily lives and they spend more money on skincare and beauty than anywhere else in the world. Many Koreans even have a ten-step morning and night routine they strictly follow day after day to maintain their beautiful skin. It’s therefore no wonder that South Korea is home to countless skincare and make-up brands offering the most innovative and futuristic products on the global market. If that’s not a great reason to come to Korea, then we don’t know what is!

Quirky Entertainment Options

Entertainment is very important to South Koreans and they come up with new ways to keep themselves amused almost every month. We have all heard of the quirky themed cafés all over Seoul that offer visitors the chance to pet cats or dogs, play with racoons, cuddle with meerkats and engage with all kinds of other animals. There are also themed cafés that allow you to dress up as a princess and take pictures or eat food shaped like poop. Karaoke rooms have also been part of Korean entertainment for decades and are popular among all age groups. PC rooms are also well-visited, usually by a younger crowd, who compete in a variety of online games with people from all over the world – so much so that South Korea has become a leading force in global e-sports.

Stunning Coastline and Beaches

Due to South Korea being a peninsula, the country offers miles and miles of beautiful coast and stunning beaches. Korea also has a lot of beautiful islands, the most popular and largest one being Jeju Island. Jeju Island is one of Korea’s most visited destinations thanks to its exceptional natural wonders and breathtaking beaches. Another beautiful beach and coastal region is Jeollado in the west of the country. Moreover, the eastern coast is famous for beautiful sunrises, the earliest in the country.

Picturesque Mountain Ranges

South Korean attractions include beautiful national parks. Despite its small size, South Korea is home to 22 national parks with countless mountains. The island of Jeju has the highest peak in South Korea, the shield volcano Hallasan. Another popular hiking area is Seoraksan, the third tallest mountain in the country at 1,708 meters (5,603 feet). You can hike around this national park on Culture Trip’s 10-day adventure around South Korea . It’s exactly this combination of mountains and coast that make South Korea such a thrilling destination.

Four Amazing Seasons

Due to South Korea’s location in East Asia, the country is blessed with changing seasons. This makes Korea an exciting place to travel and live. No matter when you travel to Korea, you’ll be surprised with breathtaking seasonal changes in nature, such as cherry blossoms in the spring, flower fields in the summer, colorful foliage in the fall and a white wonderland in the winter. Besides the changing weather, each season also has special festivals and also dishes, such as the Taebaeksan Snow Festival in winter and cold noodles in summer.

3 Things I love about Seoul, My Favourite City

At no time in history, have more people lived in cities than right now. As our world becomes increasingly global – humans – rather than spreading out and taking advantage of the millions of acres of space available to us, choose to reside in densely concentrated pockets instead. Kind of ironic, isn’t it?

In this day and age, you could argue that the idea of city is more important than that of country. When you think of China, it’s Shanghai or Beijing, that has an impact. You don’t think about the minorities of Yunnan Province or the Muslim Quarter of Xi’an, which are just as much China, as these huge metropolises are. Our impression of a “country” is mostly comprised of what’s going on in the biggest cities.

I’d even go so far as to argue that it’s not countries competing with each other to attract the best and the brightest these days…it’s cities. People don’t pick up and go to UAE. They go to Dubai. Sure, a beach break is totally restorative, but it’s cities that have the power to move, excite and exhilarate us. It’s cities that have the energy, creativity and pure human capital necessary for innovation. Cities incubate the seeds of our future.

What makes a city great? How do you decide which of all of the thousands of cities in the world, is your favourite? The choice is as unique as a snowflake in a Canadian blizzard, because every city has a character, habit and culture that’s all it’s own.

Personally, I like big cities. For me, the bigger, the better. And Seoul, my current home, and city of birth (but not citizenship) is the 2nd largest metropolitan area in the world. Sure, there are frustrations. Living next to 25 million others isn’t always easy, but it’s also the reason why the city is as efficient, modern and adaptable as it is. It’s the reason why Seoul has 19 super clean and affordable subway lines criss-crossing it’s huge area. Necessity is, after all, the mother of all invention.

Of course, a world-class public transport system isn’t enough to make Seoul my favourite city out of the hundreds I’ve visited all over the world. There’s many more reasons, and here are just 3 of them.

Food, glorious food.

Ask any expat who’s left Seoul what they miss the most, and invariably, it’s the food. And no wonder, because Korean food is absolutely delightful. Flavourful, healthy and wholly under-appreciated on a global scale, as far as I’m concerned, I simply can’t get enough of Korea’s bibimbaps and samgyeopsals.

Korean side dishes, photo by Sarah Mak

Fortunately, in Seoul, that’s not an issue, because quality restaurants, cafes and food trucks fill the streets. It’s easy to get a fix of whatever I’m craving at pretty much any time of the day.

Best of all, there’s no tipping! 🙂

The Ancient and the Modern.

In Seoul, it’s possible to travel between the ancient and the modern, simply by crossing the street. It’s a place where graceful Confucian palaces and ancient walls reside next to towering skyscrapers and ultra modern architecture.

One of the best places to encounter this mix of old and new is at Bongeunsa, where you can experience profound silence and listen to chanting monks, before entering the noise and cacophony of commercial paradise at Coex Mall, a 5 minute walk away.

It’s still at war, but that doesn’t stop it from being one of the safest places in the world.

Until recently, if you asked a foreigner about Korea, their first thought was of North Korea. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been asked if I live in North or South Korea (as if it’s easy to just leave North Korea and travel around).

Yes, Korea is divided and technically still at war, and if you believed the news media, you’d think Seoulites were cowering under some fearful reign of terror. But it’s simply not the case. The reality is that you’re more likely to get run over by an impatient driver, than get robbed or assaulted. In fact, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that Seoul itself, is actually one of the safest cities in the world.

coffee@works, in Gangnam, Seoul. Yes, you can leave your bag on the table.

It’s common practice to leave laptops, smartphones and designer purses unattended in restaurants and cafes without fear of theft, and my super-smart hubby has left the keys in his scooter countless times without consequence. Everyday, I see 5 year olds walking down the street alone, smartphone in hand (no joke), without parents worrying after them. I walk down the streets myself, day or night, and have never felt an ounce of fear. The sheer safety of the city is something I’ve gotten used to, but it’s something that should never be taken for granted.

Panmunjeom joint security area dmz korea

Incidently, the fact that Korea is technically still at war, lends itself to one of the most unique travel experiences you can have in this world. A visit to the DMZ or demilitarized zone, 1 hour north of Seoul, can give insight into the tension that still exists between the 2 countries.

Of course, now we have Psy to thank for equating Korea with Gangnam Style, which might be better, but only marginally… 😉

Do you have a favourite city? What do you think makes a city great?

Thank you for reminding me again why I absolutely love seoul as well! From all the places that I have travelled to, this city was definitely the one that left a big impression as there are just so many wonderful aspects about it especially the food and their brilliant transportation system. When you live in a city with horrible transportation system that frustrates you everyday, you just really can’t compare.

I’m definitely hoping soon, I am able to go back 🙂

When were you here? Another thing I love about Seoul is how quickly it changes… it really never gets boring! 🙂 I’m especially amazed by how quickly subway lines and stations are built – it feels like they literally appear overnight!!

I went two years ago and would definitely go again in a heart beat! I agree, I just love how efficient and convenient their subway system is especially the T-money technology – just absolutely glorious!!!! As well, there just so many places to discover and experience even within a few miles away.

It’s changed a lot, even in the last few years. I hope you get to visit again soon. 😀

Thanks for sharing your great writing. I agree, between global corporations and mega-cities the “need” for counties is becoming endangered (which seems like a natural evolution. “Imagine there’s no countries. It’s easy if you try” – perhaps enough generations have now been able to practice John Lennon’s teaching. ) I appreciate your demystifing Seoul for me, and making me add it to my list of wonder-full places to see on our beautiful spinning planet

I’m glad you enjoyed the article! Yes, I do think it’s a natural evolution…most peaceful people would prefer to “imagine there’s no countries” for sure. 😀 Seoul is often overlooked, but I think it’s definitely worth visiting. Tourists are usually pleasantly surprised when they do visit.

Beautiful article! One of the best things I ever did was give Seoul a shot. 😉

Thanks!! I’m so happy I moved to Seoul too…I so love living here, I still make new discoveries after 5 years of being here. 🙂

Hmmm.. a favourite city is very hard. We like them all for different reasons. But what makes a great city? It’s the culture, how people-friendly it is, how easy it is to get around, the variety of things to see and do….. Probably the key points in our eyes! Some of these, we can look past if another is outstanding 😉

PS – We would so love to visit Seoul (and Korea) one day. Food looks soooooo yummy!

Lol… is there anywhere in the world you DON’T want to go? 😉 Let us know when you make it here…we’ll take you out for yummy food. 🙂

Nope!! We want to go everywhere…. eventually 🙂 Oooh…. that’s a deal, now we will have to find time in our schedule to get there then 😉 And we will return the favour when you come to Sydney!

Awesome tribute to your city. I’ll admit Seoul has never been high on my list of places to visit. 25 million people, aaaah! But you edged it up a little higher.

I’m quite introverted and the sheer number of people here is the one thing I have difficulty with. What I’ve realized though is that most of the people in the city run on the same general schedule, so if you can live your life (or travel) off peak, it’s like having a giant city with all it’s resources, basically to yourself. Coffee shops, parks etc…are pretty deserted in the mornings. (Koreans are not morning people) It’s actually kinda amazing. Does that edge Seoul a bit higher? 😉

I’ll have to make a point to see the city at those times. Cheers. 😀

I was fascinated by Tokyo, but it sounds like I would love Seoul even more. I hate driving, and cities that have efficient public transportation really appeal to me. I’ve been wanting to visit South Korea – hopefully I’ll get to see it soon.

The cities are quite similar, but I think Seoul has a livelier feel than Tokyo… and I find the people are more open and curious about connecting with visitors. There are a lot of programs and things set up specifically for non-Korean speaking tourists, so it can be a very good experience. Plus overall I think Korean food is better. More variety, and there’s a real social element to all the DIY cooking in restaurants here. 🙂 I hope you get to visit soon too. Fall is the best season. 😀

This is one of the best posts ever. And whoa, it’s all about Korea. You excuted this post so well starting with your big city introduction. It’s all so true. It’s the city, and not the country, that resonates more. Most essentially too that a city is simply in itself and cannot define a nation as a whole. Korean food definitely have a distinct taste, flavor all on its own. Shelley, I might have to stay away from your blog. All the bibimbap talk is killing me! ? i love the juxtapositions that you shared here. You really have convinced us to go Korea. 🙂 And it being a safe place. Pardon me, I also didn’t know how very safe it is. All those things remind me of Okinawa, Japan. This post is an excellent eye-opener. You did a very outstanding ambassador job. 😉

Wow! Thanks for the compliment Rommel. 🙂 Yes, I think Korea often gets overlooked, and people go to Japan instead, but I think they’re missing out. Well, Asians aren’t, because Seoul has been the top tourist destination for Asians for many years in a row due to the hallyu wave, but westerners usually choose Japan instead. It’s changing though – have def noticed a big increase over the last few years (sadly, since Gangnam Style became so popular).

Lol, I love to tease you with the bibimbaps. Maybe I’ll go eat one today in your honour. 😉

' src=

I love this post! I really hope to visit Korea/Seoul someday. So many of the things you wrote about reminded me completely of Tokyo, where I lived for many years. I’m very impressed that you said that you think Seoul has the best public transport system in the world – that is saying a lot! Anyway, it’s a shame I never made it to Korea all those years I was in Japan!!

Hey Cecilia! 🙂 Yes, there are definitely huge similarities between Seoul and Tokyo, but also huge differences. The food is very different for sure, but also, overall I’d say that Seoul is a lot rowdier than Tokyo. Koreans don’t really follow the “rules” as much as Japanese, so it can be chaotic and noisy sometimes. I think Seoul’s public transport is better because it’s much cheaper ($1 per ride), feels newer, and seems more integrated than Tokyo’s. When I visited there, I felt a bit confused by all the different companies and having to exit one station, walk above ground, and then enter another station. Here, everything is totally connected, and you can even use the same transit card all over the country.

I’m the same with Japan – I haven’t even been to Kyoto yet, and it’s only a $150 RT flight. I have no excuse, except laziness. 🙁 This is the year I’m correcting it though…I’m really feeling drawn to Japan lately…plus I’ve got it in my mind to taste Kobe beef!!! 😉

Except for the drivers, I agree with safety. The only times I have felt unsafe is when I am crossing a street and oncoming traffic chooses not to stop though they have a red light and I have a green crossing signal. Yesterday, saw a guy apparently assume we had the next green light and decided to drive across a very large intersection, each street had 6 lanes of traffic. He did NOT have the green light, oncoming traffic had a green left turn signal. He just kept driving. Could not believe my eyes.

Oh, the drivers are something else here, eh? Agri has some stories to tell, that’s for sure. I’m convinced he only survives driving the streets of Seoul, because he learned how to drive in Rome…which has to be at least as bad.

I’m sure it also doesn’t help that there are TVs and all kinds of other distractions in the cars. I mean, shouldn’t that be illegal or something?

TVs are illegal now if they are in the front where the driver can see them. Just so ya know.

Home sweet home. It’s been six years since I lived anywhere else but here and although I miss home, Seoul has been a second home to me and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. You will hit the nail on the head about safety. This is one of the few places in the world I feel safe walking around at night. The food is pretty good here too 🙂

Hey, we’ve been here almost the same amount of time!! 😀 and I agree, I’m pretty sure there’s nowhere else I want to live, at least right now. In fact, when we were on our 2012 RTW, we were scouting other places to live, and there was nowhere else that gave us the same combo of factors that Seoul did. One day, I hope to live in multiple cities of the world, all at once. Maybe Rome, Seoul and someplace in Canada…oh, and a beach somewhere of course. 😉

Shelley you literally just laid out our life plan! Gotta have that beach!

Jill and I’s dream is to work in Europe for at least 5 years and then retire to Malaysia.

Great minds think alike! 😉 Malaysia, eh? We’re thinking Bali… but get torn when we think about the Greek Islands. Definitely want to be spending multiple summers hanging out there in the future.

Mani (A New Life Wandering)

You really make sound Seoul like an amazing place. A lot of it reminds me of how my mom described Shanghai when she visited. She was impressed by how safe she felt and the part about leaving your bag unattended, she was also impressed by the cleanliness and the transportation. They sound like similar places, big cities with a mix of the old and the new. I haven’t visited either of them yet.

I think a lot of East Asian cities have a similar thing going on. Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul – all similar with the old and new, but definitely with unique characters and very unique food! I think Seoul has the best public transport system in the world – and I’ve been on the ones in Paris, NYC, London, Tokyo – it’s cheap ($1 per ride), efficient, clean, safe and goes basically everywhere. I even let my driver’s license expire because of it… 😮

Seoul is still a bit under the travel radar – which makes it even better as far as I’m concerned. I hope you’ll get a chance to come visit one day. 🙂

I’m a sucker for good public transportation. You made it sound even better. 🙂

OK. Craving bibimbap now! Fortunately I brought some sauce with me to Brazil! I might have to make some this week. Will have to ad-lib a bit. I adored walking through Bukchon several times each week. Those hills are great exercise when you are pushing a pram. As for safety, there are very few places in the world that I would comfortably ride public transport alone at night, but it was easily done in Seoul. So on one hand, I felt very safe – but on the other hand, as a foreigner in Seoul and therefore not yet desensitised to the regular “threats” from North Korea, I must say that I had some anxious times too… Good luck with your entry!

Ohhh bibimbap. I think it’s probably the one Korean dish I have to have regularly…especially the stone bowl version. I’m curious to see how your Brazilian version turns out! 🙂 Bukchon is also one of my favourite parts of Seoul (it’s just so far from us – we’re down by Jamsil), but if I lived close to there, I’d get out and walk around in the mornings for sure. It must be amazingly peaceful and beautiful before all the tourists arrive.

It’s funny, every time I travel to other cities or countries, I have to remind myself to zip up my purse properly and watch my belongings, because I’m so used to not having to worry here. It’s really one of the most amazing things I think… BTW how was your trip to Peru????

Peru blew me away! I posted about it yesterday. Will try to send you a link via email.

South Korea Tourist Places Essay

My favourite tourist places in South Korea – Siddhant sharma class 11-sdj modern school Surat Gujarat (395007). The island-nation of South Korea has captivated me ever since I was in the eighth grade. As a matter of fact, the first portrayals of this country came to me in the form of kimchi (a fermented spicy dish) and a distinguished Korean horror movie; the tale of two sisters. South Korea is a country that mesmerizes everyone due to its modern and technical approach. Today, it is being recognized as an industrialized, developed economy and is home to some of the world 's leading technology corporations like Samsung, Lg, and Hyundai etc. Not only does this heavenly little land have a striking and glorious heritage since the times of Joseon, …show more content…

This country has an awe-inspiring heritage and a plethora of traditions that are distinctive and cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Being a person interested in history, I am naturally attracted towards this country which promises an amazing array of archaeological sites and museums, besides amazing modern phenomena like modern shopping complexes, trade-exchange centers and more. Being able to experience this entire up close would help me be a better, more informed citizen of the world. Since we possibly cannot discuss or review all the tourist destinations in the country, let’s look at a few of tourist places which capture my attention: Gyeongbokgung palace, the National Museum of Korea and the Coex aquarium. The Joseon dynasty built the "five grand palaces" in Seoul and the Gyeongbokgung palace is one of them. It is by far the most splendid and largest of them all and boasts a prolific and expressive architecture. Identical to a phoenix, the palace has risen several times from the ashes of destruction. It was destroyed and rebuilt numerous times but this had not spoilt its beauty. Located in the heart of the capital, this palace in its prime state consisted of 330 buildings and had up to 3000 staff (including soldiers, officials

Palace of Versailles mainly made of marbles and stones which is different than the material that used in building Forbidden City. The Forbidden City is mainly made of different types of wood and overall view of is a square because chinese believe the shape of square is stable and represents royal majesty. It displays an extraordinarily harmonious balance between buildings and open space within a symmetrical layout. The function of the inner part is the same as Versailles. Royal family live in inner palace and exterior palace is only for ceremony during special events.

Baroque Style Of The Palace Of Versailles's Hall Of Mirrors

Annually, millions of people travel to northern France to view the grand and pompous Baroque style of the Palace of Versailles’s Hall of Mirrors. Built in 1698 during the reign of Louis XIV, the Palace of Versailles stood for over 100 years as “the primary residence of the kings of France and the seat of the government,” and in 1979, the Palace of Versailles and its gardens were decreed a World Heritage site by the UNESCO. An examination of the Palace’s Hall of Mirrors will reveal a dramatic use of light, symmetry, large-scale frescoes, a shell for painting, sculpture, and stucco, and an opulent use of rich color and accessories common to a French Baroque-style interior. Louis XII (r. 1610 - 1643) used the initial residence as a hunting lodge and retreat for his family, and in 1624, he commissioned Jacques Lemercier to build a chateau on the site, which remains as “the exterior façade overlooking the Marble Court.” From 1661 to 1710, Louis XIV oversaw the residential transformation of the majestic complex surrounded by gardens.

Deaf Like Me Essay

I see how their culture has changed and evolved into what it is today. There is so much more support for Deaf education and culture than there was 100 years ago. I have learned that firsthand.

Escape From Camp 14 Analysis

Escape from Camp 14 is a bibliography about the main character Shin and how he managed to be one of the first civilians to successfully escape from a Political Camp. As Shin was growing up, he had to face terrible living conditions in Camp 14. Food was always hard to come by, so Shin often survived by eating insects and rats. North Korea is known for their many abominations to humanity. The country is also known for their communist political make up that has abused all of the North Korean people since World War 2.

Barbara Demick Nothing To Envy Analysis

In Nothing to Envy written by Barbara Demick, the author describes North Korea as "a country that has fallen out of the developed world" (Demick 4). Through diction, Demick is attempting to demonstrate the notion that North Korea is surviving solely without interruption from the outside world. This is done by ruling the country by a totalitarian dictatorship, such as an absolute monarchy controlled by generations of the same family in pursuit of the same goal. In North Korea, each individual person is denied basic human rights in attempt to control the incoming knowledge about the world around them. They are taught to solemnly worship and abide by the rules of their supreme leader and are denied any uncontrolled access to electronics, such as movies, television, and internet.

There is stability in politics and it is undergoing slow political reforms. For the first time in 2005, the local ruling body was held and more such reforms are being expected in the near future. Essay about South Korea

South Korea is best known for their green hilly mountains, the vast countryside, and even the beautiful cherry trees that grow all over the place but there is a lot more to South Korea that meets the eye.

South Korea is located 35.9078° N, 127.7669° E on the globe, it is part of Asia. Some of the characteristics of the land of South Korea is they have mountains running along the eastern coastline that goes to North Korea, these mountains are called the T’aebaek Mountains. They also have the Sobaek Mountains which is in the center of the country. There is a famous river called the Han river which played a big part in South Korea’s history. The Han river was used as a trade route to China. South Korea’s climate is hot and humid in the summers, and dry and cold in the winters. The rainfall for the mainland of the country is 35-60 inches annually and for the island of Cheju (Jeju) is 60-70 inches annually. Cheju Island is a volcanic Island that is right underneath South Korea close to Japan. South Korea and Japan live across the Japan Sea from each other. But sharing the same sea causes issues on either side.

Right now in South Korea they are protesting Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant because they want to dump their nuclear waste into the water. According to Al Jazeera News “South Korean President Moon Jae-in has ordered officials to explore petitioning an international court”, even the president wants to try to petition Japan out of dumping nuclear waste into the water. Japan said they are going to release more than 1 million tons of cantainmented water into the sea. “South Korea protested strongly against the decision, summoning Koichi Aiboshi, Tokyo’s ambassador in Seoul, and convening an intra-agency emergency meeting to craft its response.” (Chan Lee, 1). South Korea is protesting very hard to not have Japan dump the water because they are sharing the same water across the sea.

A chain of protest against Japan's nuclear water dump happened on April 14th by politicians, fisherman, environmental activists and even local officials joined in the protest. They protested in front of the Japanese embassy in Seoul, port city of Busan, and Cheju Island. One of the ways people protested in front of the Japanese embassy was when a group of South Korean University students decided to shave their heads right on the sidewalk. Several anti-nuclear and environmental groups sent a petition signed by more than 64,000 people to the Japanese embassy.

If Japan decides to go through with dumping the nuclear waste into the sea it can do a lot of damage not just for South Korea but other countries neighboring the sea. It could potentially ruin the ecosystem by these regions. Especially South Korea because it can have an effect on the city of Busan which is a big fishing town. With dumpin the nuclear waste it can ruin the fish in the water and make it so people can't catch or sell fish. Busan has the biggest and the most famous fish market in the world (Jagalchi Market). If the 1 million tons of muscular waste ends up getting dumped into the sea it will cause tons of business to suffer, just one is the Jagalchi Market. Tons of vendors sell fish there lots of people won't be able to fish anymore and it will ruin what South Korea built in Busan.

South Korea is a big tourist attraction not just with one of the biggest fish markets in the world but its scenery and culture strike an attraction to most people. With the problems this region is facing now it could be devastating for its economy. South Korea doesn't want to damage its reputation by the hands of Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant. It would not only harm South Korea but it would also harm Russia, China, and even Japan itself.  Hopefully realizing what they are doing can cause a lot of damage.

The capital of South Korea, Seoul: My favorite place paper

is1215z 1 / -   Feb 4, 2010   #1 I have to write about my favorite place for my english class. I think my professor focuses on how well each paragraph follows its topic sentence, and I am not good at writing thoroughly and consistently. Thank you. The capital of South Korea, Seoul, despite the incessant attempts of the government to grow the city out of the sullen and gloomy images of rapid industrialization and economic growth to recover from the relentless devastation from the Korean War, was on the list of 'Your least favorite cities' by one of the promising traveling guide websites, Lonely Plane. The article, which introduced Seoul as the third most hated city in the world, ruffled many South Koreans who vigorously promoted to reverse many opposing views on South Korea. I cannot give my undivided consent to the pungent comment given as the description of Seoul: "It's an appallingly repetitive sprawl of freeways and Soviet-style concrete apartment buildings, horribly polluted, with no heart or spirit to it. So oppressively bland that the populace is driven to alcoholism"(Wagle) . Certainly it is a harsh criticism for what I have seen from the place that I am about to write about. Hangang penetrates the most complex and largest city in South Korea, dividing it into two parts above and below. As it is located in the heart of Korea, it is the economic, political and cultural center of South Korea. Therefore, one can say that we have originated from Hangang. Around it we have built nest, economy, culture, transportation, entertainment and more. Hangang, however, has never been incongruous with what has been around it. Whether Hangang fits us or we fit into Hangang, our lifestyle always matched well with Hangang. In the old days Hangang was a versatile place, which benefited us. It was a trade route and the military strategic spot. In addition, people did the wash, obtained drinking water and played in water. Accordingly, Hangang grew up with us and represents the history of Korea. Nowadays, Hangang has been transformed to provide familiar features of comfort, convenience and intimacy, which meet the changes that the passage of time and the development of technology have brought to us. As it is the nest of Koreans, Hangang is the place I am fond of whether I was younger or older. I used to come to the park around Hangang with my family when I was young. From what I remember, on Children's day my family used to come to a park around Hangang. Before we even got to the park, we could figure out how many people were already in the park from innumerable cars in the parking lot, which looked like a marching of a number of ants. The park was crowded, as expected, but being with family overwhelmed any annoyance and inconvenience. Singers were performing somewhere, making the atmosphere more like a cheerful holiday. Before doing anything else, we got on a ferry that goes around Hangang for sightseeing. I smiled at some lovers who imitated the romantic scene in the movie Titanic, where Rose and Jack stand on the front deck and feel the wind with Rose's arms straightened out. Then in the ferry I saw the different vision of Seoul, more delicate and peaceful. After returning to the park, I played soccer with my father and brothers. When I got hungry from playing and running around, we sat in a mat, where my grandmother and mother were having a chat. Looking at the serenity of Hangang flowing, contrary to the noise made by delightful people, I ate the palatable dish, made by my mother. A puff of breeze from Hangang cooled down the sweat on my skin. Maybe, that tranquility drags me back. Then, it is when I was old enough to drive that I opened my eyes to the serendipity of the night view of Seoul. It may not be as legendarily majestic as Niagara Falls or the Grand Canyon, but it certainly fascinates one in some other ways. In summer a breeze of air of Hangang captivates the sleepless people who are fatigued by the sweltering nights, but there are performances in bridges, using iridescent lights with spouts of water. They dispel the fiery weather. On the other hand, the sight of Hangang in winter is somewhat different from that in summer, because the beauty of Hangang reaches the summit in winter. The will of people to stay inside pervades the mind of all. Coming out to Hangang by myself fascinates me as much as it does in summer. The coldness cannot overcome my determination, because I am aware of how preciousness. I halt my car in the parking lot in which there are barely five cars within the range of vision. I turn off the engine and light, which are so loud and bright in the darkness of night that I wonder if they might wake up the creatures that may be sleeping somewhere. I come out of the car and sit on a bench without stopping looking at the scenery. I stare at it as if I am mesmerized. I assume what I see as a picture of a renowned artist in an exhibition. It is a live picture with no frame. The picture is majorly painted in white, pointed by some bright orange and white colors. Snow clothes the frozen river while trees are covered by snow, creating wonderful scenery of nature, where everything is monochrome in white. It calms me down. Looking at the view, I remain speechless and cannot acknowledge the passage of time and the transient flow of Hangang. Time seems to stop there, and all the objects look still. Only few cars running on highways make it believable that I am breathing. Unlike what would be expected to be seen as said by the critic, the gloomy concrete buildings of endless heights blocking everything from everyone, the width of Hangang being about 2 km shows the one side of Seoul to the other side and broad vacant sky as well. The harmony of nature and artificial civilization, which never looks incongruous and discordant, astonishes many who did not expect the accord of concrete buildings and river. In front of the extraordinary scenery shown, I feel as if all the substantial or trivial matters are resolved or forgotten, or in the first place their existence may be questioned. So my anguish and concerns should not matter. I ruminate upon my concerns, recall problems and reflect on myself, but never do I evoke sorrow or worries. No thoughts really come to my mind, because in front of me the scene in which all different people somewhere on the other side of this river, trying to gain something out of their circumstances, bad or good, live along. The fact that while they struggle, I am sitting here, worried about some trifling concerns makes me think I am still immature, stuck in a small box that I could not still have gotten out. Hangang ripens me. For the rest of my life Hangang will be the refuge where I can rest with quietness. Whether the happiness or sadness is with me, I will come here. When I am troubled with my life, I will be found nowhere else but in this place that soothes me. If I am content and delightful, I will be found here as well to share the joy with others who may be struggling with their lives on the other side of Hangang somewhere. As Hangang has been, it will flow with us. It is the evidence and history of our civilization.

South Korea’s charm lies in its remarkable blend of tradition and modernity, a juxtaposition that fascinates and intrigues me. The Joseon Dynasty’s legacy of art and Confucian values forms the cornerstone of this rich culture.

The allure of South Korea is a multifaceted gem. It’s not just about the historical heritage; it’s about how history intertwines with the vibrancy of modern life. Sharing meals with locals is another way to become a part of the vibrant South Korean culture. An Essay on My Favorite South Korean Person [With PDF]

Hello Readers, Today we came with a very demanding essay named My Favorite South Korean Person. So let’s dive into the essay!

My Favorite South Korean Person feature image

This is a very difficult topic to write about. Out of the 60 million, give or take a few million, South Koreans currently alive today, it is very hard to select just one South Korean as my favorite.

Then when I factor in all the Koreans who have done so much for their country throughout its history that just makes this task even harder to do. There are just too many people to select for.

For example, there is Hyeokgeose the founder of the Silla kingdom that had Gyeongju as its capital for 1000 years. Then there was Janggeum who was the only Royal female doctor in Korean history.

Or Empress Myeongsong who led the Korean nation through her husband the king to modernization. She also worked hard to stop the Japanese from invading Korea and annexing it. Unfortunately, her efforts failed as she was assassinated in her palace in Seoul in the early 20th century.

Finally, there is King Sejong who was the 4th King of the Joseon dynasty. He was credited with a number of inventions as well as updating the Korean language making it simpler to learn, read and write. He did this by creating the Hangeul alphabet.

With so many top people to choose from it was not easy in deciding who my favorite Korean was. But in the end, I found I needed to find someone closer to modern times who most people had heard of and who also did a lot more than be a singer or actor.

I finally settled on Kim Dae-Jung the former president of South Korea. He was born in 1924 on a small Korean island in South Cholla province. During his life, he was able to achieve and complete many accomplishments that previous Korean leaders did not receive.

He grew up in a Japanese controlled Korea and graduated from Mokpo High School in 1943. He started working in a Japanese owned company that same year and in 2 years was able to take it over, turning himself and the company into very wealthy entities.

The Korean War was not kind to him as he was captured by the communists and sentenced to die. Yet that was not his destiny. He was able to escape and his experiences helped him become a supporter of democracy.

He did not like some of the policies early Korean presidents held to and that may have been the reason that it took him 5 tries before being elected to a seat in the National Assembly in 1961.

Unfortunately, he lost that seat when Gen. Park Chung-Hee successfully led a coup against the president of the country. His career is marked more by losing than winning. After democracy was restored Kim Dae-Jung became president of the National Democratic Party, he ran for president of Korea against Gen. Park but lost again.

His struggle did not end there as his pro-democracy fight had him arrested twice in the 70s and once in the 80s. A short exile kept him out of South Korea for 5 years but when he was allowed to return he continued to fight for proper democracy.

After his return, he ran for the national presidency twice more but lost both times. It wasn’t till his third attempt in 1997 that he finally won the president’s office. The best is yet to come.

During his term in office, he was able to bring his country out of the financial crisis that had struck it before he became President, He did this through restructuring the banking, business, and labor industries removing the corruption that permeated those sectors.

After that, he created his sunshine policy which strived to reunite North and South Korea and bringing to back to one nation again. Because of his persistence, hard work, and solid policies, Kim Dae-Jung won the Nobel Peace Prize. The only Korean to win a Nobel award.

His life and character are what make him stand out from all the Koreans that have lived or are living today. He never gave up and worked hard for his country even when it cost him dearly.

So I hope you like this essay on my favorite south Korean personality. Feel free to share your thoughts regarding this essay in the comment section, I would love to hear from you guys.

Can we draw any similarities between India and Korea? What can Indians learn from South Korea? How will I introduce South Korea to my friends?

How South Korea Inspires me Essay1

South Korea is a new star shining in the sky of the wealthiest countries of the world. I came to know about this wonderful country when our Prime Minister Narender Modi visited Seoul, the capital of South Korea to receive the prestigious Seoul Peace Prize 2019.

Unlike India, South Korea is not blessed with natural resources. Still, it is the 5 th largest exporter in the world. I admire South Korea for developing into a fully liberal democracy even after experiencing a series of military dictatorships from the 1960s until the 1980s.

It is very inspiring to know how South Korea managed to board this fast-paced train of development taking along its culture and values. My country India has a diverse culture, but that is holding India back in the race of progress. I want to learn from Korea how they maintain a balance between the two.

Besides South Korea’s economic progress its beauty and fashion industry is a source of inspiration for thousands of teenagers like me. The shiny and scarless faces of the fashion icons attract me to explore their world-famed cosmetic industry.

The traditional food and preparation techniques of Korean food are the main driving force behind their healthy body and energetic mind. Kimchi is served at almost every meal. These fermented vegetables save them from falling ill and allow them to concentrate their energy on constructive projects. I wish to visit Korea and relish their traditional as well as street food.

K.Dramas and K.Pop proved once again that ‘music knows no bounds’. The reason behind the number one position of BTS in 91 countries (including India) is that it covers subjects like bullying, elitism and mental health. It depicts the broad spectrum of their mind.

It was thrilling to watch BTS as the first K-Pop group addressing the United Nations. South Korean children enjoy the highest speed of the internet in their country. UN Child Flourishing Index 2020 declared South Korea as the second-best country in the world to raise kids due to good healthcare and education.

The recently built Dongdaemun Design Plaza is a major architectural development landmark in Seoul. Technological innovations of South Korea are world-famous under the big names- Samsung, LG, Hyundai, and Kia. I feel a country becomes self-reliant only with the support of proper infrastructure which is the prime focus of the Korean government.

South Korea inspires me in many interesting ways and I want to experience it firsthand whenever I can. We can learn a lot together by organising cultural exchange programmes at the school and college levels. India can proudly boast a lot of achievements which Koreans will certainly love to talk about.

How South Korea Inspires me Essay2

South Korea – the name brings up a variety of images and connections in my daily life. Likewise, there are many diverse ways in which this amazing country inspires me.

One of my biggest inspirations is that a nation that got independence after India is now producing so many products being used daily by Indians. Be it mobile phones, household electronic products or cars, South Korean products are omnipresent.

Starting as a war-torn and poor nation, South Korea decided to focus on exports and transformed itself into a developed nation at a fast pace. The per capita GDP of South Korea is almost 16.5 times that of India and it is the world’s 6th largest exporter. The technological prowess of South Korea can be gauged by the fact that it remained the world’s most innovative country in the Bloomberg Innovation Index for the sixth consecutive year in 2019.

What inspires me next is the quality of South Koreans to keep their culture and traditions alive while embracing the latest technology, fast economic growth and modern lifestyle. Koreans continue to give due importance to their customs and language. An inspiring example of this is the stellar international performance of the Korean movie, Parasite.

South Koreans are among the best in the world in terms of presenting and exporting their cultural products like K-Dramas and K-Pop. Korean stars from both these fields have now adored the world over. The number of fans of these stars is in hundreds of thousands. Some of them are strong advocates of the Sustainable Development Goals and Universal Human Rights endorsed by the United Nations.  BTS has appeared in Time’s 100 most influential people in the world.

I am also inspired by the historical similarities between India and Korea. Korea also has had an illustrious history which is well preserved through various magnificent monuments like the Palaces (Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace), Hanok Villages, Fortresses, Gates and Temples (Bongeunsa Temple, Jogyesa temple). Koreans also had to struggle against the rule of imperial power and fight for independence. Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore was impressed by their freedom struggle and wrote a poem in their honour. More than 2000 years ago a princess from Ayodhya went to Korea and married the King of Gaya. Now almost 11% of the Korean population are her descendants. This is such an inspiring connection between us and the Koreans.

I am also inspired by the achievements of South Korea in world sports. It has consistently been among the top ten medal winners in many past Olympics. Taekwondo, the famous martial art was born in Korea and is its national sport.

To win so many medals, Koreans stay fit and to stay fit, they rely on their cuisine. Korean cuisine is quite interesting and getting more popular in India and the world. Almost all foodies have eaten Kimchi the most common Korean dish.

In conclusion, South Korea inspires me in many interesting ways and I want to experience it firsthand whenever I can.

100 Words Essay On My Favourite Place

Each of us has a favourite location where we can find fulfilment and happiness. I also have a favourite place where I enjoy spending the majority of my time. My house is where I like to be. I enjoy spending my time there. It has a lovely and tranquil environment. My house is in the centre of a city. I live with my mother, father, two brothers, and two sisters. We each have our room. There isn't a place more significant than my house, in my opinion. I enjoy being at home. It energises me and lifts my spirits. Whenever I'm at home, I enjoy myself.

My Favourite Place Essay

200 Words Essay On My Favourite Place

Everybody has a favourite location, such as a garden, a house, a playground, etc. My hometown, though, is my favourite place, and I love being in my home.

My Hometown

My town is my entire world. I was raised there. I have a lot of lovely and endearing memories of it. I used to play there with my friends and cousins during my early years. In my community, everyone is cordial. My town has many trees. I can only think of one spot where I enjoy spending time - my town. My visits home provide me with much delight and satisfaction. In my town, practically every amenity is available, and the roads and bridges are macadamized.

Additionally, the community has access to medical facilities. The local government also provides excellent maintenance for the public transportation system. In my community, emphasis is placed primarily on education. Everyone wants access to high-quality education, regardless of gender. The neighbourhood helps out with the needs of poor kids. I hold this place- My Town, in high regard.

Everyone has a distinct favourite location. It is in keeping with their preferences and interests. Similarly, my favourite location reflects my interests, and I love being at my favourite place.

500 Words Essay On My Favourite Place

My grandmother's house in my village has often been one of my favourite places to be. Everyone has always held a special place in their hearts for their grandmother's home. We spent numerous summers with our granny when we were younger. Her home appeared to stand out from the rest in some way that made it special.

Enjoyment time

I enjoy playing outside while picking fresh fruits from the trees and eating freshly prepared vegetables. Frequently, I help my grandmother sow seeds in the garden. There are several reasons why I value this place so highly. There is something incredibly unique about the house. I feel at ease and relaxed here.

Why I Love My Grandmother’s House

First of all, the atmosphere at my grandmother’s house is distinctly different. I am at peace here. There is no noise or pollution because it is in a village. Additionally, there are no traffic jams here. I always wake early so that I can go for a walk and take in some fresh air. My body and mind are both revitalised by the fresh air. My grandmother makes me a delicious breakfast. In the evening, my whole family gathers to share our life stories as our grandfather makes tea.

My grandparents' home also has a small garden with grass that is a vibrant green colour. In the garden, there are swings as well. There, we also like playing entertaining games with our relatives, including water fights. We frequently spend the evenings sitting on the roof, looking up at the stars.

Holidays At Grandmother’s House

Over the holidays, there is always a lot of laughing and playing games at grandma’s house. Uncle's loud, recognisable giggle may be heard for miles. My aunt never misses an opportunity to comment on his laughter. The living room of our grandmother's home is where she regularly can be seen sitting and gazing out the window, close to the front entrance. She sits at this location to read the newspaper daily and sip on her old-fashioned steaming black coffee.

She can lose hours watching the birds fly to the feeder next to the window in her living room. Most birds have names that our grandmother is familiar with and recognises. She never skips a chance to observe the squirrels. Everything blossoms, and there are fresh flowers everywhere throughout the summer. In our town, the natural beauty is at an all-time high, and it's impossible to keep your eyes off the stunning surroundings. A pond is located behind the house. My cousins and I go fishing in the pond.

The village's residents lead simple, healthy lives. People care for one another and are always available. They make a lot of effort to maintain the facility's cleanliness because they care about it. We always look forward to our summer vacation so we may visit Grandma and Grandpa. Anyone who has met them will attest to their humility. All of this adds up to why I love my grandparents house and why it is my favourite place.

I made over $225,000 in a year as a 27-year-old government contractor overseas — and got paid to travel in my free time

  • Symoné Berry made over $225k working as an overseas US government tech contractor .
  • While in Taiwan, she took a week off every month and received "rest and relaxation" pay to travel.
  • Berry sometimes worked 90+ hour weeks — the benefits were worth it to her but it's not for everyone.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Symoné Berry, a 31-year-old government contractor living in Atlanta. Her jobs and income have been verified by BI. It's been edited for length and clarity.

I always knew I wanted a government contracting job .

My mom was a mortgage underwriter and we lived in the DC area. She would always tell me about these overseas government contractors who lived in Iraq and Afghanistan, and they would buy $500,000 houses in all cash.

I didn't know how I was going to do it and I didn't know anything about it — but I knew that's what I wanted to do.

At 16, I started to build my career in government tech and went to vocational school. From there, I went to Christopher Newport University on a basketball scholarship and eventually transferred to Virginia Commonwealth University. I graduated with my bachelor's degree in computer science with a minor in math.

I had seven job offers by the time I graduated

I graduated in the fall of 2014 with seven job offers, a mix of federal and government contract roles.

I accepted an offer as a level one embedded engineer for $72,500 a year at Raytheon, a defense contractor. I started on the first Monday of January 2015 in their Fort Meade office.

Over the next two years, I wrote code for Raytheon's radars and started looking at internal positions abroad. I figured out that I needed to get a CompTIA Security Plus authorization to work in many of the overseas positions. It took me about a month to get the certification and then another three months of interviewing and training before I started my first job overseas.

I lived in the snowiest city in the world, making $140,000 a year

As a radar systems engineer in Japan, I made just over $140,000 a year and had all of my living expenses and food paid for. I lived in a spacious one-bedroom apartment that was provided for me in Aomori Prefecture, a few minutes away from the site.

My job was to make sure that the radar system was up and running 24/7. At the time, North Korea was shooting missiles over Japan and our job was to monitor them. Most of the time, we were sitting ducks. But there were times when something did go wrong and I had to go to site at four in the morning.

In Aomori, I worked 12-hour days about four days a week and then I had off from Thursday night until Monday morning.

On the weekends, I would usually travel with my coworkers. You make a lot of friends on the job because you're all living in the same place. I went to Tokyo almost every weekend.

Aomori is the snowiest place in the world. It gets 26 feet of snow every year.

I would walk to work in a blizzard with ski goggles and a face mask on. I don't like the cold and after that first winter, I didn't ever want to go through another winter there again.

I worked 90+ hour weeks in Taiwan, but the money and time off made it worth it

After a year and a half in Japan, I started a new job in Taiwan as a senior testing engineer. At this point, I was 27 making about $225,000 a year.

My housing was paid for and there was an on-site chef to cook staff meals — but the hours were crazy.

When I started, I only had two days off every 10 days and I worked about 92 hours a week. After a few months, I negotiated my contract so that I worked three weeks straight and then got a full week off every month. During that week, I would usually visit my girlfriend in California.

I also received a quarterly pay of $2,500 for "rest and relaxation" pay, referred to as R&R. This is money that compensates for the long hours so that staff can travel during their time off. It varies in each job. In Japan, I only received $1,500 annually for R&R.

South Korea was hands down the best overseas role I had

After Taiwan, I deployed to South Korea as a senior system administrator for about $220,000 a year.

That was hands down the best living situation I had. I had a really nice three-bedroom apartment and a car rental. Plus, the surrounding area was great.

We were close to Osan Air Force Base and there were a ton of Americans in the area. I worked 50 hours a week in that role and was able to work from home sometimes there because if we weren't flying we really didn't need to be there.

During my weekends in South Korea, I didn't travel much because of Covid but I went to Seoul a few times.

This career path isn't for everyone

This lifestyle is all I know and I have no regrets.

But it's not for everyone.

Doing years of long-distance took a toll on my relationship and for people who have a family or struggle to be alone, this job would be very difficult.

Also, most of the places I worked were remote and in isolated areas. If that's a problem for you, this job path isn't the right one.

If you don't like to work long hours, I also don't suggest entering this field. Overseas government contract work requires at least 50 hours a week. It also often comes with a long commute to site — in Taiwan, it took us an hour to get down the mountain every day. While this is covered by the contractor, it still takes time out of your already long day.

But I love traveling and experiencing different cultures. Plus, this career path allowed me to save money and get into investing since I had no living expenses for years. I've saved up enough money now that I can take time off for myself and start my own business.

Over the last year, I stopped working and started building my online presence and a nonprofit called GovTech Foundation, which provides career guidance for government jobs. I might do a short-term contract to make quick money, but right now, I'm 31 and enjoying the time off to travel and focus on personal projects.

Do you work in a government job? We'd like to hear from you. Email the reporter from a non-work email at [email protected] .
