My Home Library, by Rachel Suntop

Programming Librarian Rachel Suntop shares her identity through her eclectic library. This post is part of 805's "My Home Library" blog that features essays by writers who are sheltering in place during the Covid-19 pandemic. 805 is proudly published by the Manatee County Public Library System. We hope this blog will help Manatee County residents show off their home libraries, find comfort in books, and feel a connection to the library during this difficult time.

Welcome to my library. As you can see, it is quite an eclectic collection including books (how shocking!), DVDs, CDs, magazines, and some self-published works. My library is distributed in several different places in my home. I have a wide variety of interests and have both fiction and non-fiction (although the majority of my books are actually non-fiction). My collection is constantly evolving as I love to acquire new stuff, but inevitably let go of other items because I don’t have a lot of storage room.

I have quite an extensive recipe book collection. Since a very young age, I have been passionate about baking, and to a lesser extent, cooking. Some of my cookbooks date back

to when I was a young girl, and some I keep more as sentimental reminders of my childhood years as a baker. Probably one of my favorite and most used books is the Betty Crocker Cookie Book. I remember one day in 3rd or 4th grade getting this book from school (each month, students would order from a printed catalog) and was so excited I couldn’t wait to go home and try a recipe. Cookies have been, and still are, my favorite treats to bake. Since getting diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2010, I have had to drastically alter my diet, but fortunately there are excellent gluten-free flour mixes that serve as great substitutes for regular flour so I can still make many of my old recipes. Additionally, I now have a great collection of gluten-free cookbooks. Other cookbooks are full of recipes from around the world, as I love global cuisine. Some of my “cookbooks” are actually collections of recipes that I’ve printed from the internet and put into 3 ring binders.

Also noteworthy are my collections of art and craft books. My art and craft books are a combination of how-tos, collections of inspiring artists and some very unique art books. For instance, I own a limited copy of the colorful prints and art of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, a visionary Austrian artist known for his distinctive utopian architecture. When I was in Vienna last spring, I visited one of his dreamy rainbow apartment homes and a museum. This book came from my dad. Both of my parents are avid collectors of art books, particularly those that are rare and antique. My mother is a photographer who has published many books in her decades as an artist and I own copies of most of those, too. A couple of them are available in our Eaton room at the library including Bea Nettles: Harvest of Memory.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love to travel. Of course, right now I’m not able to go very far but looking at these books puts me back in a virtual mindset. I have beautiful coffee table picture books of places that I’ve traveled to including Iceland, Finland and Lake Superior. I have the Rick Steves and Fodor’s travel guides to Europe, Chicago, Florida and other places, although some are several years of out-of-date (I have a soft spot for withdrawn library books, so I like to keep them for ideas and inspiration). I also have my own collection of books that I created using Snapfish, that document various trips I’ve taken to Europe and all around the state of Florida.

I love to read fiction and slip into alternate realities. Some of my favorite genres are historical fiction, fantasy, horror, mysteries, poetry and science fiction. The Scary Stories to tell in the Dark series has always been one of my favorites. It brings back memories of when we did sleepovers in the prairie with my summer camp (I grew up in Illinois). I especially like to read

these stories around Halloween time. Just recently, there has been a movie made that features some of these stories. Both the stories themselves and the movie are available at our library. Some more obscure but favorite fantasy books include Under Plum Lake by Lionel Davidson and some of the Patricia McKillip novels. They are colorful, creative and take me on distant journeys to visit fascinating lands.

I am also an avid film watcher and I enjoy both fiction and documentary films. One subject that I’m endlessly fascinated with is the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, held in the city of Chicago. I own a documentary about that fair that was narrated by Gene Wilder and it makes me wish I were alive back then to see it. Types of movies I like are drama, horror, fantasy, comedy, classics, foreign and independent. Another film I enjoy is Dreams (1990) by Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. In it are 8 different dreams, each with beautiful magical realism and stunning visual impact. Another three, which happen to be children’s films, are my favorite in the fantasy genre. These are the Dark Crystal (1982), the Neverending Story (1984), and Labyrinth (1986). Each is really artistic, imaginative and managed to do remarkable things with their visual effects and puppetry, back when technology was much more limited.

When speaking about my personal library, I can’t forget my large collection of music CDs. Although technology has been changing quickly and most of this music is available to download and listen to electronically, I still like to pop in a good album now and then in my car when I’m driving. Favorite artists include the Beatles, David Bowie, Bjork, Sigur Ros, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Massive Attack, Michael Jackson, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, U2, Tom Waits, Sufjan Stevens, Cocteau Twins, Elton John, Tori Amos and PJ Harvey to name a few. I also love to listen to classical music, especially Bach and Chopin, and to world music, ranging from Nordic to Javanese gamelan.

I see my home library as a reflection of my identity which represents my passions in life. It keeps me company, gives me inspiration, and helps me to get through these challenging times.

Rachel Suntop is Programming Librarian at the Manatee County Public Library System. A textile artist, she travels extensively and loves movies, music, and baking.

A Library is a place where students and people interested in reading books visit very often. It constitutes several collections of books of variable genres to please the reader. The library is an important place for the community. It includes books, newspapers, magazines, manuscripts, DVDs, and more such informational sources. It plays a significant role in the kid’s learning phase. Despite the advancement in technology , the library still plays a critical role in everyone’s life. One can borrow books from the library. There are two types of libraries one is a private library that is controlled by the school and college authorities, whereas the other is a public library that is open to all.

A library is a place where books belonging to different subjects and genres are stored. My school also has a very big library next to the computer lab. Our timetable is designed in such as format that we could visit the library twice a week and explore books apart from our syllabus. This practice of visiting and exploring books in the library induces a habit of reading in all the students.

My school library has autobiographies, picture books, comics, novels, fictional books, books on culture, art, and craft, and many other materials. Students can borrow the desirable book to read for one week and then, on a specific date we need to return that book to the school library.  Thus, the library teaches us the value and importance of books and inculcates the habit of reading and imparting knowledge.

The library is the place where people come together to learn and gain knowledge. Books are arranged on large bookshelves. Books belonging to similar genres are arranged on the same shelf by the librarian. The librarian is in charge of the library.

Some libraries have digital software to keep track of books issued and received to and from the library. Owing to technological advances, books are nowadays available on online platforms. Readers can read the book on apps like Kindle. But still, the library has its role, it is easily accessible plus it will provide a trustworthy source of information.

Good raiders prefer books to read in their physical form as they cherish the quality of pages, type of writing , and the authenticity of book covers. Thus, the library plays an important role in the student’s as well as adults’ life.

Every school allots specific hours for students to visit and read books from the library so that they can induce reading habits from childhood itself. Students also refer to books from the library to complete their assignments or summer vacation homework.

There are set rules and regulations of the library. Generally, we are not allowed to talk so that readers won’t get distracted and lose their pace of reading. Besides that, if any book issued from the library gets misplaced, damaged, or lost from the borrower then, he/she has to pay a fine to the librarian.

Thus, the library is an excellent resource for books that spread knowledge and information along with entertainment .

The Importance of Home Libraries

my home library essay

by Katy Larson, Classroom Specialist at Mackin

Think back to your childhood home. Were there books lining your shelves and bedside tables, or were there few if any books around the home? At the time, you may not have realized how important the number of books in your home library was. When, in fact, the number of books that are in the home has a direct impact on literacy and education.

According to one study, “being raised in a bookless home compared to being raised in a home with a 500-book library has as great an effect on the level of education a child will attain as having parents who are barely literate (3 years of education) compared to having parents who have a university education (15 or 16 years of education).”  1 Growing up in a home with a library of any size has a positive, lasting effect on an individual’s educational career. Regardless of the parents’ level of education, growing up with a home library improves skills in adult literacy, numeracy and technological problem solving. 2 What this all boils down to is a career in education that lasts 3.2 years longer. 3

Now, a 500-book library can seem extreme for any home library; however, starting small can have an enormous impact on literacy. For example, a home library of even 20 books can help create a culture of reading and learning in the home. Looking at the data, having 80 books in the home can help students reach an average level of literacy. This level continues to increase with the more books that are in the home, but levels off at around 350 books. 4

A home library can also help curb the summer slide, which in turn can narrow the disparities between low- and high-income households. Having books in the home can help support  each s tudent, especially if the student is from a low-income family. A staggering 51% of public school students come from poor families; therefore, bringing books into the home can help families who are unable to help support learning outside of the school day. 5 The summer slide impacts all students to some extent, but it has a greater impact on low-income students. One reason low-income students experience a greater impact is due to the cessation of resources. During the school year, students have consistent access to books and reading instruction. During the summer months, these resources are no longer available to them to the same extent which causes them to lose forward momentum. 6 This equates to a “three- month achievement gap between more advantaged and less advantaged students.” 7

Let Mackin help build home libraries and curb the summer slide with our take-home reading backpacks. Our backpacks can include up to five curated titles, or you can design a custom take-home reading project with the help of our experts. These reading bags can be an important start to a student’s home library collection, or a continuation to their current home library. In addition to the books, the backpacks include reading guides in English and Spanish, so reading can become a part of the family routine, and develop a lasting culture of reading in the home.

The art and life of Mark di Suvero

my home library essay

The home library of William Randolph Hearst.

I would argue that public libraries, holding both virtual and material texts, are an essential instrument to counter loneliness. I would defend their place as society’s memory and experience. I would say that without public libraries, and without a conscious understanding of their role, a society of the written word is doomed to oblivion. I realize how petty, how egotistical it seems, this longing to own the books I borrow. I believe that theft is reprehensible, and yet countless times I’ve had to dredge up all the moral stamina I could find not to pocket a desired volume. Polonius echoed my thoughts precisely when he told his son, “Neither a borrower nor a lender be.” My own library carried this reminder clearly posted.

I love public libraries, and they are the first places I visit whenever I’m in a city I don’t know. But I can work happily only in my own private library, with my own books—or, rather, with the books I know to be mine. Maybe there’s a certain ancient fidelity in this, a sort of curmudgeonly domesticity, a more conservative trait in my nature than my anarchic youth would have ever admitted. My library was my tortoise shell.

Sometime in 1931, Walter Benjamin wrote a short and now famous essay about readers’ relationship to their books. He called it “Unpacking My Library: A Speech on Collecting,” and he used the occasion of pulling his almost two thousand books out of their boxes to muse on the privileges and responsibilities of a reader. Benjamin was moving from the house he had shared with his wife until their acrimonious divorce the previous year to a small furnished apartment in which he would live alone, he said, for the first time in his life, “like an adult.” Benjamin was then “at the threshold of forty and without property, position, home or assets.” It might not be entirely mistaken to see his meditation on books as a counterpoise to the breakup of his marriage.

Packing and unpacking are two sides of the same impulse, and both lend meaning to moments of chaos. “Thus is the existence of the collector,” Benjamin writes, “dialectically pulled between the poles of disorder and order.” He might have added: or packing and unpacking.

Unpacking, as Benjamin realized, is essentially an expansive and untidy activity. Freed from their bounds, the books spill onto the floor or pile up in unsteady columns, waiting for the places that will later be assigned to them. In this waiting period, before the new order has been established, they exist in a tangle of synchronicities and remembrances, forming sudden and unexpected alliances or parting from each other incongruously. Lifelong enemies Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa, for instance, will sit amicably on the same expectant shelf while the many members of the Bloomsbury group will find themselves each exiled to a different “negatively charged region” (as the physicists call it), waiting for the wishful reunion of their particles.

The unpacking of books, perhaps because it is essentially chaotic, is a creative act, and as in every creative act, the materials employed lose in the process their individual nature: they become part of something different, something that encompasses and at the same time transforms them. In the act of setting up a library, the books lifted out of their boxes and about to be placed on a shelf shed their original identities and acquire new ones through random associations, preconceived allotments, or authoritarian labels. Many times, I’ve found that a book I once held in my hands becomes another when assigned its position in my library. This is anarchy under the appearance of order. My copy of Journey to the Center of the Earth , read for the first time many decades ago, became in its alphabetically ordered section a stern companion of Vercors and Verlaine, ranking higher than Marguerite Yourcenar and Zola but lower than Stendhal and Nathalie Sarraute, all members of the conventional fraternity of French-language literature. No doubt Verne’s adventurous novel retained in its pages traces of my anxiety-ridden adolescence and of one long-vanished summer in which I promised myself a visit to the Sneffels volcano, but these became, once the book was placed on the shelf, secondary features, overruled by the category to which the language of its author and the initial of the surname have consigned it. My memory retains the order and classification of my remembered library and performs the rituals as if the physical place still existed. I still keep the key to a door that I will never open again.

Places that seem essential to us resist even material destruction. When in 587 B.C. Nebuchadnezzar set fire to the First Temple in Jerusalem, the priests gathered with the keys to the sanctuary, climbed to the burning roof, and cried out, “Master of the world, since we have not merited to be trustworthy custodians, let the keys be given back to you!” They then threw the keys toward heaven. It is told that a hand came out and caught them, after which the priests threw themselves into the all-consuming flames. After the destruction of the Second Temple by Titus in 70 A.D. , the Jews continued to perform the holy rites as if the ancient walls still rose around them, and they kept on reciting the prescribed prayers at the times that their corresponding offerings had been performed in the vanished sanctuary. And ever since the destruction, a prayer for the building of a third temple has been a formal part of the thrice-daily Jewish service. Loss entails hope as well as remembrance.

Because a library is a place of memory, as Benjamin notes, the unpacking of one’s books quickly becomes a mnemonic ritual. “Not thoughts,” Benjamin writes, “but images, memories” are conjured in the process. Memories of the cities in which he found his treasures, memories of the auction rooms in which he bought several of them, memories of the past rooms in which his books were kept. The book I take out of the box to which it was consigned, in the brief moment before I give it its rightful place, turns suddenly in my hands into a token, a keepsake, a relic, a piece of DNA from which an entire body can be rebuilt.

Recollecting My Library ... and My Self

William Cronon | Nov 1, 2012

For all of us who love books, which I assume includes most of my fellow historians, Benjamin describes an essential truth about the scholarly life. In our efforts to understand the past, we trace a serendipitous journey from document to document, moment to moment, place to place, in which the books we read (like those we write) become milestones in our emerging sense not just of our subjects, but of our selves. Every major research project involves the careful collecting of sources and interpretations—the threads we hope to weave into tapestries—which we assemble into the stories we ourselves tell. Having searched and found the sources that become our raw materials, we make them our own by forging new connections among them in our notes and in our minds, just as the books emerging from Benjamin's crates found new order and meaning on his shelves. Possessing things in this way involves much more than just physical property, which is why Benjamin can say of the book collector that "ownership is the most intimate relationship that one can have to objects. Not that they come alive in him; it is he who lives in them. So I have erected one of his dwellings, with books as the building stones."

I linger on these volumes from Walter Benjamin's library because they can serve as symbols of the relationships between books and readers that we have not yet fully succeeded in reproducing in the digital world. Indeed, I would go further: it is precisely this collecting of carefully curated, intricately structured, lovingly tended personal libraries—so crucial to the practice of history—that is becoming more challenging as texts that once lived on physical pages bound between the covers of physical books are transformed into virtual e-texts floating ethereally among the virtual shelves of virtual libraries. Again, I am not mainly talking about physical ownership here, though it is no accident that Benjamin's memories were so powerfully triggered by his books as physical objects. I'm concerned instead about metaphorical book collections, the libraries we assemble in our minds in something akin to the rooms of a memory palace—the Roman method of loci —in which texts and ideas gain meaning in relationship to each other by virtue of the mental architecture we create to hold them. It is these mnemonic relationships in our mental libraries that enable us to keep Benjamin's "chaos of memories" at bay. More to the point, it is these relationships we use to write history. At some very deep level, they are stuff of which history is made.

Two features of the digital revolution put this project of building personal libraries—whether physical or mental—at risk. One is the extraordinary new power of search , which makes it possible to rummage the Web for the most arcane information and generally expect to find it with a speed and facility that were inconceivable just two decades ago. This ease in finding information means that even novices can now confidently locate bits of knowledge which only the most skilled scholars would have known how to find in the past, and then only after many years of study.

These new capabilities are in many ways miraculous, and we have all benefited from what Google and other search engines now make possible. But like all innovations, they come at a price. Information so gained is ripped from its original contexts. The very speed with which we find it tempts us not to recognize the work required truly to understand those contexts with all their meanings and ramifications. Furthermore, the power of search means we no longer need nearly so much of the mental architecture without which we couldn't even have found such information in the past, let alone made sense of it. We simply type a few words into the search box, extract the fragment we think we need, and hurry on to the next scrap. Just as the printed book diminished the need for memory palaces, so Google diminishes the need to remember anything but the simplest search strategies. What this means for a discipline like history that is all about context it is too soon to tell.

But there is another feature of the digital realm that poses still subtler challenges. The Roman invention of the multi-paged codex as a replacement for the far more ancient scroll represented an informational revolution that few of us now appreciate. As anyone who has watched the ritual turning of the Torah will understand, finding a single Biblical verse on a scroll is remarkably time-consuming. Finding it in a codex, on the other hand, is as simple as ruffling pages with one's thumb to find in few seconds what would take minutes on a scroll. Although no Roman would have said it this way, the codex remains one of the most powerful random-access devices humanity has yet devised.

Can physical books come close to competing with computers when it comes to search? Of course not. But when one wants to relocate a piece of information in a particular context, and when one remembers that context better than the information itself, then it can be surprisingly difficult for search alone to recover what one wants. What few of us recognize is that computer interfaces have for the most part retreated from the codex back toward the scroll. When we avail ourselves of the astonishing powers of Google, our "search result" comes back to us in the form of a list through which we must slowly— scroll . This is equally true of word processor texts and e-books. When we highlight or make notes in an e-reader and need to find our own annotations again, we do so via a laborious process of search which generates a long list through which we must scroll (often with the most woefully inadequate snippets as our only context) in the hope of relocating what we ourselves wrote. The same annotation or underlining that often took seconds to find in a physical codex can take minutes to relocate using the slow, context-stripping tools thus far available on e-book readers.

This problem of the scroll as a universal metaphor for accessing information is only compounded as we move from the individual text to the virtual library which any scholar must create when working on a large project—or when constructing the metaphorical library of a lifetime. As I sit writing this essay at my home desk, I am surrounded by wooden shelves that contain perhaps a thousand books. The iPad sitting beside me contains at least three times that number in my digital library. But whereas I can reach any of the physical books in my study in less than five seconds, and can generally get to the parts of them that loom largest in my mental library in well under a minute, it can take that long even to locate a single e-book on my iPad, let alone to find a particular passage. Powerful though the iPad may be—and it is the best e-book reader I know—its heavy dependence on search and scroll still makes it a poor replacement for the library Walter Benjamin unpacked from his crates or the one that surrounds me now.

I had intended to write in this essay about the technical challenges that desperately need resolving if scholars are to migrate toward digital libraries without sacrificing what has been most precious about the memory palaces in which we still store our richest and subtlest understandings of the past. I was going to complain about the breathtaking sloppiness with which Amazon maintains bibliographic control of its e-books, so comically awful that one never knows whether a book will sort by its author's first or last name. I was going to narrate the story of my 20-year effort to build digital libraries on handheld devices, and how frequently I've had to reformat public-domain e-books from .txt to .lit to .html to .doc to .pdf to .mobi to .epub, with no hope of retaining my own annotations in the process. I was going to describe how many times I've had to purchase additional versions of the same beloved book in order to access it on a new device. But I must save that conversation for a longer draft of this essay that will ultimately appear—where else?—in a book where I can give the argument the space it deserves.

For now I will simply repeat what I said at the end of my October column. Those of us who love books inevitably gather a library around ourselves that embodies not just our knowledge but our selves. From this metaphorical library emerge the ever more deeply informed intuitions that enable us to filter the chaos of mere "search results" by exercising human judgment to yield genuine insights and even wisdom. This lifelong process of creating a scholarly self by means of an intellectual and emotional journey whose way-stations are marked by passionately remembered texts—many of them so dear that we keep them close to us for our entire lives—is being transformed in the fragmented world of search and scroll that has become our dominant metaphor for knowledge itself. There is no escaping this transformation. But if we are to preserve the virtues of the scholarly life while enjoying the fruits of these new riches, we must join Walter Benjamin in unpacking the old physical crates that once held our books so we can continue to recollect them in the well-stocked libraries of our minds.

I have long dreamed of having my own home library. Something with wall-to-wall built-in shelving. A blue velvet chaise lounge. Shabby chic end tables and vibrantly colored accent pieces and a card catalog cabinet for — I don’t know. Reasons .

Instead, I have my cluttered home office. Instead of built-ins, my bookcase is a china cabinet I snagged on the cheap from HomeGoods. Instead of a chaise lounge, I have the POÄNG armchair from IKEA. The vibe is more rustic industrial than shabby chic, and there’s nary a card catalog cabinet in sight.

Still, it’s mine and I love it.

No matter what you’re working with — dedicated library space or home office or that one corner of your bedroom — you can still create a home library that feels you .

My own aesthetic is sex-positive, embroidery-obsessed cat lady. What’s yours?

I love to look to Instagram for home library inspiration, and I still occasionally update my space with new knick-knacks and pieces of art. So if you’re looking for ideas, here are some recommendations for achieving various bookish home library aesthetics.

Victorian-Era Mystery

This isn’t my usual decorative vibe, but I don’t hate how it’s giving me those Sherlock feels:

I could totally see myself hiding out in this home library, tucked into that leather, wingback chair, running my hands over the leather-bound books as I daydream of being swept into a passionate embrace by Andrew Scott’s Moriarty.

My god, do I need to rewatch the series now?? ::starts fanning herself::

You can gussy up your own Victorian-era home library with accent pieces like this pretty porcelain tea set ($195+):

…or this antique oil lamp ($73):

World Traveler

I am also not a world traveler. In fact, I am a full-on, indoorsy, reclusive homebody. But that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate a look that makes people envy your obviously adventurous life:

Or, I don’t know. Maybe it’s the cat.

Either way, all you need to recreate this look are some antique travel trunks. These hand-painted trunks are $292 and up, which is a bit rich for my blood, but aren’t they pretty?

But there are less pricey options to be found, like this vintage suitcase (on sale for $68):

And what about a retro-looking globe for good measure ($40)?

Top it all off with a curated selection of travel memoirs and you’re set!

A library is a location where numerous collections of books are kept. The extensive library at my school is next to the auditorium. Once a week, our class goes to the library. Our library has a variety of picture books, novels, comics, and other materials.

Due to my passion for reading books and magazines, I look forward to my time in the library. 200 Words Essay On School Library

My school has a large library with a wide selection of books on many topics. Twice a week, we have designated time for the library. Each class has a library period during the weekly schedule. My greatest reason to go to the library is that I can read my favourite books there. My school's library is tastefully decorated. It is a sizable hall that is well illuminated and ventilated. There is a huge section in the middle intended for seating children. We sit in rows most of the time. The books are arranged all around the seating area.

Our library is staffed by a librarian and a caretaker. Our Librarian is a sympathetic person. When we request one of the books, she always beams and gives us the book. The library also provides a selection of newspapers, journals, and current events in both English and Hindi. With the exception of those marked "could not be issued," the majority of the books in our library can be signed out. If the book is lost, harmed, or delivered too late, we are charged with a fine. There are many different types of books in the library and I love spending time there.

In my school, the library is always open, so when there is no class, I go to the library and study some novels by different authors. I love to be in the library because there is always pin-drop silence, and one can read in silence without being interrupted.

Each student has easy access to the necessary tools and reading material in the library, facilitating a successful educational experience. It is essential to a student's life. Winter Haven Housing Authority Persistent Logo

My Home Library Project

WHHA staff standing next to bookshelf of materials used in Home Library project

In 2014, the Winter Haven Housing Authority created the "My Home Library" Family Literacy Project, as a way to address declining reading outcomes of its after-school youth, and to promote healthier reading habits between parent and child.

Bookshelves, fully stocked with reading materials for the entire household, were donated by local businesses to deserving families who through essay competitions explained why having a home library was important to their family.

Background: The WHHA operates an after-school tutorial program, and annually in assessing student progress, volunteer tutors noticed a common concern of reading deficiencies among some youth tutored. Meanwhile, through the FSS Program, coordinators noticed that during monthly Book club meetings, that some parents faced literacy challenges. FSS Participants hosts a book club, whereby they select reading materials. Some of these parents also have children participating in the after-school tutoring program.

Through these observances, the "My Home Library" Family Literacy Project was born. Local businesses and service providers have joined the WHHA, to donate needed bookshelves and reading materials to families who qualify, as a result of their winning essay entries. Essays are juried, for now, twice a year for bookshelf distribution.

Agency Role:   As the sole creator of this project, the WHHA's development of the literacy project and its organization required minimal funding to implement. Making the pit to local social service providers and businesses for books and furniture was met with success, as the WHHA has worked hard to cultivate good collaborations with community providers.

Results/Program Success:   The primary object of this project (was/is) to address impacts of reduced family interaction in the home, when television and other forms of media (video games and tapes) are prevalent. National studies by the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Medical Association, have revealed that excessive time spent with various media overtime will displace more active and meaningful pursuits, such as reading and family fun time. Public Housing families sampled disclosed they rarely enjoyed activity with their children without some form of media being used. This admittance seemed to validate studies that suggest that children spend an average 6 hours per day in front of the TV, which has caused some youth over time to demonstrate poorer school performance, aggressiveness and even obesity.

For adults in the household, the trend was even more concerning, as researchers found that for every 2 hours a parent spent watching TV during their day, their risk of developing type 2 diabetes increased by 20% and their risk of heart disease increased by 15%. From reviewing studies, listening to families and the evaluation of youth in our after-school tutoring program, the WHHA saw a need for the literacy initiative. Reaction from families has yielded several impactful essay competitions among parents seeking to strengthen the family bond and boost their children's school performance.

Total Costs/Financing :  Development of this program cost the WHHA as little as $100, which was used for printing literature presented to sponsors and for miscellaneous shelf décor. This is what makes the "My Home Library" such an effective and easy initiative to implement. It's also a non-intrusive way to jumpstart positive interaction among parent and child. The costs of bookshelves and reading materials were all absorbed by the donors.

A library is a good place for reading, and my school has a huge library with a vast collection of books. We read different stories, colourful fairy tales, poems, and novels in our library. It is a peaceful place where we have to maintain silence and decorum. My school library allows us to issue books for a week, which helps us develop a reading interest. We learn so many new words by reading and also understand their meanings. Reading has improved my language and my thinking power. I love going to my school library and look forward to attending library hour!

Essay writing is very beneficial for kids to expand their knowledge and skills. Here is a long essay on ‘My School Library’ for class 3 students:

A library is a wonderful place to explore books on different subjects. My school library has many books arranged in alphabetical order. The library also has large shelves filled with thousands of books to read. We have a weekly library class at school that has helped me develop a reading interest. Reading stories and novels has helped me add new words to my vocabulary and improved my reading skills.

Books are our most reliable friends. They are the river of knowledge that makes you a better person. There are many books in our library, with different authors narrating different stories. I love reading fictional stories because they are fascinating and have beautiful endings. Reading is a good habit that both my teacher and my parents appreciate. It develops our thinking power and gives wings to our imagination.

Reading is essential for self-education and gaining knowledge. Not all geniuses come out of a classroom. Some creative minds need inspiration and information that a book can provide. Maintaining silence in our school library is important, especially in the reading section. The reading section of my school library has long tables and chairs arranged on both sides. I sit with my friend, and sometimes we read each other’s books. Our librarian has a great knowledge of books and helps us pick our favourite magazine, novel, or newspaper. She maintains all the data very carefully too. We can issue books on our school library card. The issued book must be returned after a week in the same condition as it was issued.

A library is an indispensable part of a school and plays an important role in students’ lives. We hope this will help your child get inspired and write an essay in their own words. Remember to follow the key points, take cues from the above three formats, and help your kid develop amazing skills!

What is Presidents Day and how is it celebrated? What to know about the federal holiday

Many will have a day off on monday in honor of presidents day. consumers may take advantage of retail sales that proliferate on the federal holiday, but here's what to know about the history of it..

my home library essay

Presidents Day is fast approaching, which may signal to many a relaxing three-day weekend and plenty of holiday sales and bargains .

But next to Independence Day, there may not exist another American holiday that is quite so patriotic.

While Presidents Day has come to be a commemoration of all the nation's 46 chief executives, both past and present, it wasn't always so broad . When it first came into existence – long before it was even federally recognized – the holiday was meant to celebrate just one man: George Washington.

How has the day grown from a simple celebration of the birthday of the first president of the United States? And why are we seeing all these ads for car and furniture sales on TV?

Here's what to know about Presidents Day and how it came to be:

When is Presidents Day 2024?

This year, Presidents Day is on Monday, Feb. 19.

The holiday is celebrated on the third Monday of every February because of a bill signed into law in 1968 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Taking effect three years later, the Uniform Holiday Bill mandated that three holidays – Memorial Day, Presidents Day and Veterans Day – occur on Mondays to prevent midweek shutdowns and add long weekends to the federal calendar, according to Britannica .

Other holidays, including Labor Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day , were also established to be celebrated on Mondays when they were first observed.

However, Veterans Day was returned to Nov. 11 in 1978 and the holiday continues to be commemorated on that day.

What does Presidents Day commemorate?

Presidents Day was initially established in 1879 to celebrate the birthday of the nation's first president, George Washington. In fact, the holiday was even simply called "Washington's Birthday," which is still how the federal government refers to it, the Department of State explains .

Following the death of the venerated American Revolution leader in 1799, Feb. 22, widely believed to be Washington's date of birth , became a perennial day of remembrance, according to History.com .

The day remained an unofficial observance for much of the 1800s until Senator Stephen Wallace Dorsey of Arkansas first proposed that it become a federal holiday. In 1879, President Rutherford B. Hayes signed it into law, according to History.com.

While initially being recognized only in Washington D.C., Washington's Birthday became a nationwide holiday in 1885. The first to celebrate the life of an individual American, Washington's Birthday was at the time one of only five federally-recognized holidays – the others being Christmas, New Year's, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July.

However, most Americans today likely don't view the federal holiday as a commemoration of just one specific president. Presidents Day has since come to represent a day to recognize and celebrate all of the United States' commanders-in-chief, according to the U.S. Department of State .

When the Uniform Holiday Bill took effect in 1971, a provision was included to combine the celebration of Washington’s birthday with Abraham Lincoln's on Feb. 12, according to History.com. Because the new annual date always fell between Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays, Americans believed the day was intended to honor both presidents.

Interestingly, advertisers may have played a part in the shift to "Presidents Day."

Many businesses jumped at the opportunity to use the three-day weekend as a means to draw customers with Presidents Day sales and bargain at stores across the country, according to History.com.

How is the holiday celebrated?

Because Presidents Day is a federal holiday , most federal workers will have the day off .

Part of the reason President Johnson made the day a uniform holiday was so Americans had a long weekend "to travel farther and see more of this beautiful land of ours," he wrote. As such, places like the Washington Monument in D.C. and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, which bears the likenesses of four presidents – Washington, Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt – are bound to attract plenty of tourists.

Similar to Independence Day, the holiday is also viewed as a patriotic celebration . As opposed to July, February might not be the best time for backyard barbecues and fireworks, but reenactments, parades and other ceremonies are sure to take place in cities across the U.S.

Presidential places abound across the U.S.

Opinions on current and recent presidents may leave Americans divided, but we apparently love our leaders of old enough to name a lot of places after them.

In 2023, the U.S. Census Bureau pulled information from its databases showcasing interesting presidential geographic facts about the nation's cities and states.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the census data shows that as of 2020 , the U.S. is home to plenty of cities, counties and towns bearing presidential names. Specifically:

  • 94 places are named "Washington."
  • 72 places are named "Lincoln."
  • 67 places are named for Andrew Jackson, a controversial figure who owned slaves and forced thousands of Native Americans to march along the infamous Trail of Tears.

Democrats Have a Better Option Than Biden

It requires them to embrace an old-fashioned approach to winning a campaign..

A full transcript of this audio essay is available here:

Ezra Klein: My heart breaks a bit for Joe Biden. This is a man who has been running for president since he was young. He wins the presidency, finally, unexpectedly, when he’s old. And that age brought him wisdom. It brought an openness that hadn’t always been there in him. He’s governed as a throwback to a time before “I alone can fix it,” a time when presidents were party leaders, coalition builders.

Biden has held together a Democratic Party that could easily have splintered. Think back to the 2020 campaign, when he beat Bernie Sanders, when he beat Elizabeth Warren, when his victory was seen as, was in reality, the moderate wing triumphing over the progressive wing, the establishment over the insurgents.

But instead of making them bend the knee, instead of acting as a victor, Biden acted as a leader. He partnered with Bernie Sanders. He built the unity task forces. He integrated Warren’s and Sanders’s ideas and staff into not just his campaign but also his administration.

I had a conversation recently with Pramila Jayapal, the chair of the House progressive caucus, and I asked her why the Democratic Party hadn’t ruptured the way Republicans did. She pointed me back to that moment. Biden, she said, made this “huge attempt to pull the Democratic Party back together before the 2020 election in a way I’ve really never seen before.”

And it worked. Democrats had 50 votes in the Senate. Fifty votes that stretched from Bernie Sanders on the left all the way to Joe Manchin on the right. Biden and Chuck Schumer, they often could not lose even one of those votes, and at crucial moments, they didn’t.

With that almost-impossible-to-hold-together coalition, the Biden administration and congressional Democrats passed a series of bills — the bipartisan infrastructure deal, the Inflation Reduction Act, the CHIPS and Science Act — that will make this a decade of infrastructure and invention. A decade of building, of decarbonizing, of researching. They expanded the Affordable Care Act, and it worked — more than 21 million people signed up for the A.C.A. last year, a record. They did what Democrats have promised to do forever and took at least the first steps toward letting Medicare negotiate drug prices.

And the Biden team, they said they were going to run the economy hot, that at long last, they were going to prioritize full employment, and they did. And then inflation shot up. Not just here but in Europe, in Canada, pretty much everywhere. The pandemic had twisted global supply chains and then the economy had reopened, and people desperate to live again took their pandemic savings and spent. And the Biden team, in partnership with Jerome Powell and the Federal Reserve, got the rate of inflation back down, and we are still beneath 4 percent unemployment.

And I don’t want to just skip over that accomplishment. Most economists said that could not be done. The overwhelming consensus was we were headed for a recession, that the so-called soft landing was a fantasy. It got mocked as “immaculate disinflation.” But that is what happened. We didn’t have a recession. We are still seeing strong wage gains for the poorest Americans. Inequality is down. Growth is quick. America is far stronger economically right now than Europe, than Canada, than China. You want to be us.

And yet Biden’s poll numbers are dismal. His approval rating lingers in the high 30s. Most polls show him losing to Donald Trump in 2024. Then comes the special counsel report, which finds no criminal wrongdoing in his treatment of classified information, which is — remember — the question the special counsel was appointed to investigate. But the counsel takes a drive-by on Biden’s cognitive fitness. Says a jury would think him a “well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory.” Says Biden doesn’t remember when his son Beau died.

And Biden, enraged, does what people have been asking him to do this whole time. He takes the age issue head on. And he gives a news conference full of fury.

And then, when he is about to leave, he comes back to take one more question — this one on Israel and Gaza, where he says that America is no longer lock step behind Benjamin Netanyahu’s invasion, and then describing the effort he put in getting President Sisi to open the Egyptian border for aid, he slips. He calls Sisi the president of Mexico. Makes the kind of slip anyone can make, but a kind of slip he is making too often now, a kind of slip that means more when he makes it than when someone else does.

Since the beginning of Biden’s administration, I have been asking people who work with him: How does he seem? How read in is he? What’s he like in the meetings? Maybe it’s not a great sign that I felt the need to do that, that a lot of reporters have been doing that, but still. And I am convinced, watching him, listening to the testimony of those who meet with him — not all people who like him — I am convinced he is able to do the job of the presidency. He is sharp in meetings; he makes sound judgments. I cannot point you to a moment where Biden faltered in his presidency because his age had slowed him.

But here’s the thing. I can now point you to moments when he is faltering in his campaign for the presidency because his age is slowing him. This distinction between the job of the presidency and the job of running for the presidency keeps getting muddied, including by Biden himself.

This is the question Democrats keep wanting to answer, the question the Biden administration keeps pretending only to hear: Can Biden do the job of president? But that is not the question of the 2024 campaign. The insistence that Biden is capable of being president is being used to shut down discussion of whether he’s capable of running for president.

I’ve had my own journey on this. I’ve written a number of columns about how Biden keeps proving pundits wrong, about how he’s proved me wrong. He won in 2020 despite plenty of naysayers. The Democrats won in 2022, defying predictions. I had, in 2022, been planning to write a column after the midterms saying there should be a primary because Democrats need to see how strong of a campaigner Biden still was. The test needed to be run. But when they overperformed, that drained all interest among the major possible candidates in running. That test wasn’t going to happen. But still, I thought, Biden might surprise again. I’d grown wary of underestimating him.

We had to wait till this year — till now, really — to see Biden even begin to show what he’d be like on the campaign trail. And what I think we’re seeing is that he is not up for this. He is not the campaigner he was, even five years ago. That’s not insider reporting on my part. Go watch a speech he gave in Pennsylvania, kicking off his campaign in 2019. And then go watch the speech he gave last month, in Valley Forge, kicking off his election campaign. No comparison here. Both speeches are on YouTube, and you can see it. The way he moves, the energy in his voice. The Democrats denying decline are only fooling themselves.

But even given that, I was stunned when his team declined a Super Bowl interview. Biden is not up by 12 points. He can’t coast to victory here. He is losing. He is behind in most polls. He is behind, despite everything people already know about Donald Trump. He needs to make up ground. If he does not make up ground, Trump wins.

The Super Bowl is one of the biggest audiences you will ever have. And you just skip it? You just say no?

The Biden team’s argument, to be fair, is this: Who wants to see the president during the Super Bowl, anyway? And even if they did the interview, CBS would just choose three or four minutes of a 15-minute interview to air. What if CBS chooses a clip that makes Biden look bad?

That’s all true. But that’s all true in the context of a team that does not believe that the more people see Biden, the more they will like him. There’s a reason other presidents do the Super Bowl interview. There’s a reason Biden himself did it in 2021 and 2022, that Trump said he’d gladly take Biden’s place this year.

I was talking to James Carville, who’s one of the chief strategists behind Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign, and he put this really well to me. He said to me that a campaign has certain assets, but the most desirable asset is the candidate. And the Biden campaign does not deploy Biden like he is a desirable asset.

Biden has done fewer interviews than any recent president, and it’s not close. By this point in their presidencies, Barack Obama had given more than 400 interviews and Trump had given more than 300. Biden has given fewer than 100. And a bunch of them are softball interviews — he’ll go on Conan O’Brien’s podcast, or Jay Shetty’s mindfulness podcast. The Biden team says this is a strategy, that they need apolitical voters, the ones who are not listening to political media. But one, this strategy isn’t working — Biden is down, not up. And two, no one really buys this argument. I don’t buy this argument. This isn’t a strategy chosen from a full universe of options. This is a strategic adaptation to Biden’s perceived limits as a candidate. And what’s worse, it may be a wise one.

I want to say this clearly: I like Biden. I think he’s been a good president. I think he is a good president. I don’t like having this conversation. And I know a lot of liberals, a lot of Democrats are going to be furious at me for this show.

But to say this is a media invention, that people are worried about Biden’s age because the media keeps telling them to be worried about Biden’s age? If you have really convinced yourself of that, in your heart of hearts, I almost don’t know what to tell you. In poll after poll, 70 percent to 80 percent of voters are worried about his age. This is not a thing people need the media to see. It is right in front of them, and it is also shaping how Biden and his campaign are acting.

Democrats keep telling themselves, when they look at the polls, that voters will come back to Biden when the campaign starts in earnest and they begin seeing more of Trump, when they have to take what he is and what it would mean for him to return seriously.

But that is going to go both ways. When the campaign begins in earnest, they will also see much more of Joe Biden. People who barely pay attention to him now, they will be watching his speeches. They will see him on the news constantly. Will they actually like what they see? Will it comfort them?

That was why that news conference mattered. That news conference had a point. It had a purpose. The purpose was to reassure voters of Biden’s cognitive fitness, particularly his memory. And Biden couldn’t do that, not for one night, not for fewer than 15 minutes. And these kinds of gaffes have become commonplace for him. He recently said he’d been speaking to the former French president Francois Mitterrand when he meant Emmanuel Macron. He said he’d been talking to the former German chancellor Helmut Kohl when he meant Angela Merkel.

None of these matter much on their own. The human mind just does this. But it does it more as you get older. And they do matter collectively. Voters believe Biden is too old for the job he seeks. He needs to persuade them otherwise, and he is failing at that task — arguably the central task of his re-election campaign.

And that can become a self-fulfilling cycle. His staff knows that news conference was a disaster. So how will they respond? What will they do now? They will hold him back from aggressive campaigning even more, from unscripted situations. They will try to make doubly sure that it doesn’t happen again. But they need a candidate — Democrats need a candidate — who can aggressively campaign, because again — and I cannot emphasize this enough — they are currently losing.

Part of my job is talking to the kinds of Democrats who run and win campaigns constantly. All of them are worried about this. None of them say that this is an invention or not a real issue. And this is key: It’s not the age itself they are worried about. The age of 81 doesn’t mean anything. It’s the impression Biden is giving of age. Of slowness. Of frailty.

The presidency is a performance. You are not just making decisions, you are also acting out the things people want to believe about their president — that the president is in command, strong, energetic, compassionate, thoughtful, that they don’t need to worry about all that is happening in the world, because the president has it all under control.

Whether it is true that Biden has it all under control, it is not true that he seems like he does. Some political strategists I know think that’s why his poll numbers are low. That even when good things happen, people don’t really think he did them. One was telling me that what worries him most about Biden is how stable his approval rating is — it doesn’t really go up or down. Inflation has gone down a lot in recent months. People feel a lot better about the economy. You can see that in consumer sentiment data. But Biden’s approval rating, it has not gone up. His performance on Ukraine did not make it go up. The passage of the Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPS Act did not make it go up. To this strategist, it looked like a lot of Americans just don’t give Biden credit for things even when he deserves them. And Biden isn’t now a capable or aggressive enough campaigner to win that credit for himself.

The arguments I see even some smart Democrats making so they don’t have to look at this directly are self-defeating. The one I hear most often is that Trump is also old. He’s 77. He also mixes up names — he recently called Nancy Pelosi Nikki Haley. He sometimes speaks in gibberish. And it’s all true. But that is a reason to nominate a candidate who can exploit the fact that Trump is old and confused. The point is not to give Trump an even match. The point is to beat Trump.

Another argument I see is that this is ageism. This is an unfair thing to point out about Biden. It is age discrimination and, I have actually seen people make this argument, age discrimination is illegal in the workplace. But it is not illegal in the electorate. If the voters are ageist and Biden loses because of it, there is no recourse. You cannot sue the voters for age discrimination.

And then there’s the argument you’ve heard on my podcast. An argument I’ve made before. Biden doesn’t look like a strong candidate, but Democrats keep on winning. Biden won in 2020. Democrats won in 2022. They’ve been winning special elections in 2023. They just won George Santos’s seat in New York. There’s an anti-MAGA majority in this country and they will come out to stop Trump. And I think that might be true. I still think Biden might win against Trump, even with all I’ve said. It’s just that there’s a very good chance he might lose. Maybe even better than even odds. And Trump is dangerous. I want better odds than that.

I think one reason Democrats react so defensively to critiques of Biden is they’ve come to a kind of fatalism. They believe it is too late to do anything else. And if it is too late to do anything else, then to talk about Biden’s age is to contribute to Donald Trump’s victory.

But that’s absurd.

It is February. Fatalism this far before the election is ridiculous. Yeah, it’s too late to throw this to primaries. But it’s not too late to do something.

So then what? Step one, unfortunately, is convincing Biden that he should not run again. That he does not want to risk being Ruth Bader Ginsburg — a heroic, brilliant public servant who caused the outcome she feared most because she didn’t retire early enough. That in stepping aside he would be able to finish out his term as a strong and focused president, and people would see the honor in what he did, in putting his country over his ambitions.

The people whom Biden listens to — Barack Obama, Chuck Schumer, Mike Donilon, Ron Klain, Nancy Pelosi, Anita Dunn — they need to get him to see this. Biden may come to see it himself.

I take nothing away from how hard that is, how much Biden wants to finish the job he has started, keep doing the good he believes he can do. Retirement can be, often is, a trauma. But losing to Donald Trump would be far worse.

Let’s say that happens: Biden steps aside. Then what? Well, then Democrats do something that used to be common in politics but hasn’t been in decades. They pick their nominee at the convention. This is how parties chose their nominees for most of American history. From roughly 1831 to 1968, this is how it worked. In a way, this is still how it works.

I’m going to do a whole episode on how an open convention works, so this is going to be a quick version. The way we pick nominees now is still built around conventions. When someone wins a primary or a caucus, what he actually wins is delegate slots. How that works is different in different states. Then they go to the convention to choose the actual nominee.

The whole convention structure is still there. We still use it. It is still the delegates voting at the convention. What’s different now than in the past is that most delegates arrive at the convention committed to a candidate. But without getting too into the weeds of state delegate rules here, if their candidate drops out, if Biden drops out, they can be released to vote for who they want.

The last open convention Democrats had was 1968, a disaster of a convention where the Democratic Party split between pro- and anti-Vietnam War factions, where there was violence in the streets, where Democrats lost the election.

But that’s not how most conventions have gone. It was a convention that picked Abraham Lincoln over William Seward. It was a convention that chose F.D.R. over Al Smith. I’ve been reading Ed Achorn’s book “The Lincoln Miracle: Inside the Republican Convention That Changed History.” My favorite line in it comes from Senator Charles Sumner, who sends a welcome note to the delegates, “whose duty it will be to organize victory.”

Whose duty it will be to organize victory — I love that. That’s what a convention is supposed to do. It’s what a political party is supposed to do: organize victory. Because victory doesn’t just happen. It has to be organized.

Everybody I have talked about this, literally everybody, has brought up the same fear. Call it the Kamala Harris problem. In theory, she should be the favorite. But she polls slightly worse than Biden. Democrats don’t trust that she would be a stronger candidate. But they worry that if she wasn’t chosen it would rip the party apart. I think this is wrong on two levels.

First, I think Harris is underrated now. I’ve thought this for a while. I’ve said this before, that I think she’s going to have a good 2024. Is she a political juggernaut, a generational political talent? Probably not. But she’s a capable politician, which is one reason Biden chose her as his running mate in the first place. She has not thrived as vice president. The D.C. narrative on her has turned extremely negative. But when Kamala Harris ran campaigns as Kamala Harris, this wasn’t how she was seen. And Harris, in private settings — she’s enormously magnetic and compelling.

Her challenge would be translating that into a public persona, which is — and let’s be blunt about this — a hard thing to do when you’ve grown up in a world that has always been quick to find your faults. A world that is afraid of women being angry, of Black people being angry. A world where, for most of your life, it was demanded of you that you be cautious and careful and measured and never make a mistake. And then you get on the public stage and people say, oh, you’re too cautious and too careful and too measured. It’s a very, very, very hard bind to get out of. But maybe she can do it.

Still, it is the party’s job to organize victory. If Harris cannot convince delegates that she has the best shot at victory, she should not and probably would not be chosen. And I don’t think that would rip the party apart. There is a ton of talent in the Democratic Party right now: Gretchen Whitmer, Wes Moore, Jared Polis, Gavin Newsom, Raphael Warnock, Josh Shapiro, Cory Booker, Ro Khanna, Pete Buttigieg, Gina Raimondo, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Chris Murphy, Andy Beshear, J.B. Pritzker — the list goes on.

Some of them would make a run at the nomination. They would give speeches at the convention, and people would actually pay attention. The whole country would be watching the Democratic convention, and probably quite a bit happening in the run-up to it, and seeing what this murderer’s row of political talent could actually do. And then some ticket would be chosen based on how those people did.

Could it go badly? Sure. But that doesn’t mean it will go badly. It could make the Democrats into the most exciting political show on earth. And over there on the other side will be Trump getting nominated and a who’s who of MAGA types slavering over his leadership. The best of the Democratic Party against the worst of the Republican Party. A party that actually listened to the voters against a party that denies the outcome of the elections. A party that did something different over a party that has again nominated a threat to democracy who has never — not once — won the popular vote in a general election.

That seems like an OK contrast to me.

Yes, the Democratic Party has been winning elections recently. But it is winning those elections in part because it takes candidate recruitment seriously. That was true in 2020. Biden wasn’t the candidate that set the base’s heart aflutter, but he seemed like the candidate with the best shot at winning. So Democrats did the strategic thing and picked him. And they won. In 2022, Democrats carefully chose candidates who fit their districts, who fit their states while Republicans chose MAGA-soaked extremists. And that is why those Democrats won.

The lesson here is not that Democrats don’t need to think hard about who they run in elections. It’s that they do need to think hard about who they run in elections. And they have been. They need to be strategic, not sentimental. And they have been. Because the alternative is Donald Trump. And Donald Trump is dangerous. And right now, Donald Trump is ahead.

I have this nightmare that Trump wins in 2024. And then in 2025 and 2026, out come the campaign tell-all books, and they’re full of emails and WhatsApp messages between Biden staffers and Democratic leaders, where they’re all saying to each other, this is a disaster, he’s not going to win this, I can’t bear to watch this speech, we’re going to lose. But they didn’t say any of it publicly, they didn’t do anything, because it was too dangerous for their careers, or too uncomfortable given their loyalty to Biden.

I’ve said on the show before that we live in a strange era with the parties. We’ve gone from the cliché being that Democrats fall in love and Republicans fall in line, to the reality being that Democrats fall in line and Republicans fall apart. I’ve mostly meant that as a critique of Republican chaos, but too much order can be its own kind of pathology. A party that is too quick to fall in line, that cannot break line, is a party that will be too slow, maybe unable, to solve hard problems.

So yes, I think Biden, as painful as this is, should find his way to stepping down as a hero. That the party should help him find his way to that, to being the thing he said he would be in 2020, the bridge to the next generation of Democrats. And then I think Democrats should meet in August at the convention to do what political parties have done there before: organize victory.

I recognize there’s going to be a lot of questions and comments and pushback to this piece. So we’re going to do an “Ask Me Anything” episode next week — on this, on 2024 broadly. We’ve set up a voice mail box, if you want to leave a message that could get played on the show. Please keep them under a minute. We’re not going to use ones that are very long.
